GVM GAMES LIFE
BY RANDY MOORE
am not a fan of cold weather. I tend to chase the forecast when I can, and find sanctuary in the warmth of the sun. Yet, I am keenly aware of how damn happy this time of year makes me. There is a reason why “it’s the most wonderful time of year.” It is not the presents; I’ve outgrown that years ago, and the thrill of writing a Christmas list left me quite a while ago too. It is not the time off; though, but I guess being in school and getting a whole week off is pretty sweet. It is not that everyone is a little bit kinder this time of year — they aren’t. Black Friday is turning more and more into “The Walking Dead.” Still, I get excited the first time I walk through a store and see Christmas decorations and trees on display (though, it happens in October now). Every year, I find myself counting down the days until my local radio station begins to play non-stop Christmas music which gets earlier each year it seems. I drive around neighborhoods just to admire Christmas lights. Even when I am experiencing “bad days” during the other 11 months of the year, I find myself putting Christmas music on to lift my mood, and nine times out of 10, it works.
GVM | 9
So, while I sit here and sip my iced tea from Bojangles, which on a regular basis literally tastes like Christmas, I ponder one question: Why has this feeling not been lost on me yet? I am an adult; I do not have any children; I hate the cold, and yet, I am downright excited for this time of year. Why am I not jaded? I believe it is the little things and the traditions about this season that keep me excited this time of year. I believe while unpacking all of that mistletoe, holly and tangled Christmas lights, I also unpack the feelings of years gone by. Nostalgia and the smell of pine fill the house I grew up in as my mother sets up mostly the same Christmas decorations she has set up my entire life. I remember the year the tree fell down in the middle of the night. I remember my mom decorating, secretly hoping we wouldn’t help because “every ornament has its place.” I still find myself impatiently waiting for my aunt to show up at the house at 6am yelling “Merry Christmas, everyone get up!” Christmas morning, as health conscious as we have grown to be, I still manage to eat three cinnamon buns for breakfast with my family because that is what we
have always done. Then we sit around and open presents that most of us knew what we were getting beforehand but acted like it was the first time our eyes had ever seen it. Then stuff ourselves several times throughout the rest of the day and think we can work it off the next few days, right! The holiday season, to me, is a true and honest escapism back into my childhood when life was simpler, sweeter and more innocent. I didn’t just believe in the magic of Santa, I was positive it was all very real. A line from one of my favorite holiday songs goes, “Through the years, we all will be together, if the fates allow.” As an adult, I know how truly lucky we are if we are all here this time next year together. Life is fleeting, and nothing is guaranteed. I am eternally grateful for another year with family and friends. Though the magic and anticipation I felt as a child have transformed into what I feel today, it is still magic, nonetheless. And, to every single one of you out there who still believes, I hope you all “have yourself a merry little Christmas.”
HOLIDAY ALL THE WAY.

Reefer Madness at E.C.U.
BY TOMHA MCMILLAN
I was pleased to make it last to the photo call for the musical “Reefer Madness” performed at McGinnis Theatre on the Campus of East Carolina University. by The School of Theatre and Dance. There were communication challenges that made it tough to make it to the live performance but we were certainly glad to make the photo call. They call it “Reefer Madness.” In the musical adaptation of the 1930s cult movie, cannibalism, leather-dom play, kitten abuse, barking like a dog, and -- gasp! -- homosexuality are the horrific effects of toking what the show’s narrator deems the “leafy-green assassin.” The musical’s source material -- a fire-breathing, made-for-PTAs flick warning parents about the dangers of pot -- was flush with such earth-scorching propaganda it still makes Donald Trump’s tweets look positively subliminal. Even reviewers who’ve called the campy classic one of the worst films ever made nevertheless consider it entertaining as a two-day buzz. The costumes and lightening and set design were brilliant, It was amazing to see how they would adapt the scenes from this blank and while film form 1936. the images they used were very live, vibrant, and provocative; wardrobe, makeup, props and sets. were a lot of allusion to social, religious, and political themes and symbols. The skillful use of these themes and symbols add straight to the commercial and comedic edge to the satire. I most certainly am looking forward to future presentations and performances from the East Carolina University School of Theater and Dance. I have been able to navigate through the communication challenges with Mr. Jeffery Woodruff (Managing Director, ECU/Loessin Playhouse, Associate Director, School of Theater and Dance) and will be covering future events so mark your calendars for: “1776” - February 21st 2017, “Dance 2017”- March 21st, and “Lend Me a Tenor” - April 18th 2017. I am extremely excited to share what the university staff and future professionals are creating and putting on display for our community. Keep your eyes and ears open for an inside look at future theater and dance performances. I will be highlighting different events and performances for the remainder of this year and the first quarter of 2017. MUSIC
FIND YOUR BLISS OUT WEST! BY CHRIS WAGNER
If you’re an avid concert, festival, and music lover like myself you should make your way out to Los Angeles. With so many shows and venues to choose from, I’m able to catch a show once or twice a week depending on who is playing. Every venue has a different dynamic, so you’re able to get a unique experience with every show. Los Angeles offers every genre to music lovers on any given night. If you ever get a chance, make your way out west to experience some of the best venues in America. I use the app Bandsintown to keep me up to date when my favorite artists are playing around the city. You can also follow people that track the same artists. It’s a great way to connect with people that enjoy the same kind of music as you. Most recently I was able to attend two incredible shows at two different venues. The first one was Mat Zo at Create located in the heart of Hollywood. Mat Zo has been in the electronic music scene for some time now, working with artists such as Porter Robinson & The M Machine. His style of music has changed over the years, but he still finds a way to continuously impress. I was fortunate enough to get a ticket to his sold out show at Create. He’s currently on his Mad Tour promoting his new EP called MAD. As I waited in line with anticipation and I wasn’t sure if it was the bass coming from inside or my heartbeat making vibrations course through my body. As I entered the packed venue I made my way to the dance floor to finally see Mat Zo for the first time. As soon as he came on the stage the crowd went in to a frenzy, dancing like they were possessed. He mixed up his set with some old tunes from his albums back when he was signed to Ajunadeep’s label, he also mixed in some of his Drum & Bass tracks like “Ruffneckbad Boy”. His new stuff GVM | 23
was great too; I really liked “Troglodyte” & “Take it Back” from his new EP MAD. All in all it was an awesome show, the crowd was pleased, and I added another great experience from Create Nightclub from Matt Zo’s powerful set. Another pretty amazing show that I attended recently was at Union Nightclub. This was my first time attending Union. I’ve heard great things about it, so I got the chance to see Dubfire b2b Hot Since 82 (DJ Set). This venue really stood out to me with its diverse crowd and three different floors playing music. The first floor was playing downtempo house music, the second a more upbeat deep house, and the third was the main act. I prepared myself for a long night of dancing since their set was 5 hours from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. Dubfire produces house & techno, his set that night was all techno based mixing old music with songs he has remixed like “Leave Me” by Hot Since 82 & Habishmann. He also played one of my all-time favorite tunes, “Agua”. I am patently waiting for him to put out some new music that I can vibe to. Hot Since 82 did a stellar job with playing alongside Dubfire. They meshed well together the whole night and kept the crowd alive. I hope to see Hot Since 82 do a set of his own soon, I love his span across genres producing House, Deep House and Tech House. His latest release is a single titled “Yourself”. He is currently in the process of releasing a new album sometime this next spring. Coming up shows I’ll be attending is Boogie 2 year anniversary at Sound Nightclub featuring CRNKN and special guests. Pardon My French Tour with Malaa, Mercer, Tchami and DJ Snake. Check back next month for brand new music and music experiences here in LA.

10 HOLIDAY PARTY GAME IDEAS Whether you are having a Christmas party with family and friends or an office party with co-workers, here’s a list of games that will add some fun to your celebration. 1. Fill the Christmas stocking. Divide into teams and have the participants race to fill their team’s hanging stocking with a spoonful of wrapped candy. 2. Christmas gift wrap relay. Set up assembly lines of gifts, boxes, scissors, wrapping paper, ribbon, and tape for each team. Either have each player wrap one gift or make an assembly line of workers. Then race to wrap! 3. Word Find. Using Christmas words—Christmas, Poinsettia, Candy cane, etc.—have each person make as many smaller words from it as possible before the timer runs out. 4. Christmas Carol Charades. Get dramatic! You can’t beat this crowd pleaser, as it is sure to bring the laughs. 5. Photo booth. Provide silly props and backdrops for guests to use
GVM | 25
to get silly in front of a photographer (keep in mind it doesn’t have to be a professional). 6. Two truths and a lie. This is a great ice breaker! Each person tells two stories about themselves, two of which are true and one that is not. A great Christmas twist is to name their three worst Christmas gifts; two would be true and one would be false. 7. Snowman building contest. Judge on speed or originality. 8. Snowman wrapping contest. Wrap a person as a snowman in toilet paper and decorate. First or best one wins. 9. Snowball throwing contest. Make a large bulls-eye in the snow with food coloring from spray bottles. Indicate points for each circle of the target, like in darts or shuffleboard. Everyone makes the same amount of snowballs and throws for points. 10. Decorate a person as a Christmas tree. Using green crepe paper, ornaments, tinsel—whatever you can find—decorate your “tree”. First or best one wins.$
