SCHOOLS and colleges across Europe are by now well aware of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and its imminent arrival on 25th May. The legislation has received significant media coverage over the past twelve months. It poses a challenge for the sector. Education providers store large volumes of personal data – on students, parents, graduates, staff and former employees. In some instances, this can include sensitive data as defined under GDPR, such as information on a person’s ethnicity and religion. It is all too easy in our day-to-day working lives to put off implementing the changes required to comply with the new law. A recent study by McCann Fitzgerald and Mazars found that three quarters of Irish businesses are unprepared for the introduction of GDPR. To simplify the process, I outline some of the core principles to be aware of and list some steps you can take to ensure you and your team are compliant. Understand the seven core principles for processing personal data. There are seven fundamental principles that apply when processing personal data. This is the place to start your compliance journey as it forms the core of GDPR. 1. Lawful, fair and transparent. Institutions are required to process data in a lawful, fair and

transparent manner. When collecting personal data, you must advise what processing will be done, and in clear and straightforward language. 2. Purpose limitation. Personal data should only be obtained and used for specific, explicit and legitimate purposes. 3. Data minimisation. Think clearly about the data you actually need. Make sure it is relevant and necessary only for the purposes for which it is being processed. 4. Accuracy. Your school or college must put policies in place to ensure any data held is both accurate and up-to-date. 5. Storage limitation. Do not keep data for longer than necessary. If you do not have clear retention policies, now is the time to put these in place. 6. Integrity and confidentiality. Make sure your data is confidential and secure. For example, put in place clear user rights and controls on who can access what data. 7. Accountability. Your institution is responsible for compliance with GDPR and must be able to demonstrate this. Know the legal basis for processing personal data. There are six legitimate bases for processing someone’s personal data. 1. Consent - this must be freely

given, specific, unambiguous and informed. 2. You can process data if the processing is required to enter into or perform a contract. 3. Legal obligation – if an obligation exists under EU or member state law. 4. If it is in the vital interests of the data subject. 5. If it is in the public interest. 6. If it is in the legitimate interests of the controller or processor, but this must be balanced against the rights of the data subject. Know your data The next step is to gain a thorough understanding of your current data. This is achieved through a data audit, which looks at aspects such as: - What data does your school or college currently store? - Why did you obtain it? - What purpose was it obtained for? - What security and retention policies are in place? - Is there a policy and procedure in place to respond to data access requests? - Are contracts in place with third party suppliers who process your data? Depending on the size of your organisation, it may require hours, days or a number of months to establish a detailed inventory of all the data you are currently storing and utilising. t you need to know process is to put together a diagram or visual representation of the data. Train your team It is too easy to presume that knowledge of data protection is someone else’s job, be it the data protection officer (DPO) or legal counsel. You and your team must ensure you have adequate training on GDPR and best practice. Anyone who interacts with personal data should have at least a grounding in the basics of GDPR, particularly the legal bases for processing. There are plenty of courses and seminars available, which will enable you to quickly upskill. Start re-permissioning Many of us will have databases of contacts stretching back years. GDPR requires your institution can provide tangible proof they provided consent to have their data processed. Businesses are now undertaking re-permissioning of their databases for this purpose and developing centralised systems where this proof of consent can be quickly and easily accessed. It is also a useful time to review or develop clear retention policies. The era of keeping data on file ‘just in case’ has clearly passed. Prepare for data access requests GDPR removes the previous cost of €6.35 to make a data access request, while the response time is

shortened to 30 days. If a parent or student submits a request for their data, how will your school or college manage this? Work with your in-house or external advisors to put in place a procedure. Who will follow up on the request once it is received? Have you a clear understanding of where the data is held? Are there multiple owners that need to input? Putting in the effort in advance will save you time, hassle and stress in the long run. The European Court of Justice (ECJ) recently ruled that exam transcripts constitute personal data. A student can now potentially access not only their written answers in the exam, but also the examiner’s comments relating to those answers. It is worth considering how your institution will respond in such a scenario. Be aware of specific rules to protect children’s personal data The GDPR contains specific rules to protect children’s personal data. This is of particular importance to the education sector. The recently published Data Protection Bill 2018 sets the age of digital consent at 13 years. In the case of children below this age, the parental authority or guardian must provide consent. There are also additional requirements on the language used when seeking consent.

Put processor agreements in place Many of us use third party suppliers to process data. This could be a CRM provider or a web agency that manages your college’s website. Under GDPR you are obliged to put in place formal contracts with these providers. This can take time, so if you haven’t begun already, look to start as soon as possible. Undertake Data Protection Impact Assessments Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) will be mandatory for any new activities that involve the systematic processing of large amounts of personal data. For example, a new HR system or international transfers of data. A DPIA must be undertaken prior to any processing activity taking place. Take the time to build this into the timelines and procurement practices for upcoming projects you may be working on that fit this category. Don’t Panic The GDPR will be upon us in less than three months. The good news is you still have time to commence your journey towards compliance. Use the compound effect. Take clear steps each day. By getting to know the legislation and core principles, you and your institution will be well placed to prosper under the new data regime. Education 5

Skills for careers STILLORGAN College of Further Education has been a specialist centre for Further Education/Post Leaving Cert courses since 1986. During this time it has developed an enviable reputation for its delivery of Further Education programmes. The college offers a range of practical courses that develop the necessary skills for the workplace or to progress to further study in the Institutes of Technology or Universities. The college is innovative in providing courses that meet the current needs of industry. A recent addition to the courses offered is a Level 5 course in Illustration & Design. This exciting course introduces students to the wide-ranging discipline of Illustration and helps them gain an improved understanding of the possibilities of image-making. Through a series of studio-based projects, lectures and excursions students gain the confidence to explore their work on a practical level and the skills to construct appropriate work to form a strong portfolio for admission to higher level education. High standards Another new course is their Level 6 course in Photography. This course builds on the long-established and successful Level 5 course in Photography. A testament to the high standards in this department is that a recent graduate from the Level 5 course, Joanna Gnasiuk, won the News Photographer Of The Year at the 2017 Student Media Awards. Since its introduction a few years ago, the Level 5 course in Animation has gone from strength to strength. This introductory course prepares students with little or no experience for a third level course in animation production. The course, taught by professionals, blends the practical and the creative. With a dual focus on drawing and computer skills, the course covers all the fundamental areas required for a successful portfolio submission. Students learn to visually develop and communicate their ideas through life drawing, storyboarding, character design, background design and planning. Creativity The success of the Animation course builds on a particular strength of the college in the creative areas of Art and Photography. One of the longest established courses in the college is the Art Foundation course. This course provides tuition in areas such as Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics and Combined Materials. Graduates of this course leave with a very extensive portfolio that can be used to progress to Degree courses in colleges such as the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) and IADT, DĂşn Laoghaire. Indeed, the course has an exceptionally high success rate of graduates progressing to their chosen degree

courses in these and other Art colleges. The wellestablished Photography course also has an excellent track record for students progressing into industry or further study. The college also offers Level 5 and Level 6 course in Multimedia and Web Development. A unique strength of the Multimedia courses taught in the college is the emphasis they place on incorporating Digital Video into multimedia content. This is a skill that is rarely taught on other similar courses and offers graduates of this course a particular advantage when it comes to the jobs market. Practical skills Also on offer is a Travel and Tourism course with Airline Studies. This course prepares students for work in all areas of the travel industry. Not only do students cover the theory behind this dynamic industry, but they gain practical skills in First Aid and Computerised Reservation Systems (Amadeus), as well as spending 4 days in the Academy of Aviationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simulated aircraft cabin environment near Dublin Airport. Students on the Event Management course also gain practical experience in organising a number of events during the course of their studies. Courses in Media Production, Journalism and Level 5 and 6 courses in Computer Skills for Business round off the extensive offering of courses in the college. Industry experience The staff of the college have extensive industry experience in their respective fields and are dedicated to ensuring that, whether aiming to move to Higher Education or entering the employment market, students leave the college with every skill necessary for the future. Indeed, the college takes particular pride in the excellent success rate of students progressing to Degree courses in Higher Education. Sited close to Stillorgan Shopping Centre, the college is serviced by many bus routes and is also accessible via Dart and Luas networks. Car parking is available on the college grounds. Extra teacher training Technological Universities Bill course places announced becomes law THE Technological Universities Bill has been signed into law with the first application to be submitted in the coming months with a view to the establishment of the first Technological University in the current year. Many of the Institutes of Technology are hoping to transit to the new designation in regional groupings. 10 out of the 14 IoTs are part of these groupings who will now go through the application process outlined in the new legislation. The four groupings are based in Connacht-Ulster, Munster, the SouthEast and in Dublin. The proposed Dublin TU will be comprised of the DIT along with Blanchardstown and Tallaght Institutes of Technology and is likely to be the first approved and largest with over 30,000 students spread across three campuses.

MINISTER for Education and Skills Richard Bruton has announced an expansion of the number of places on post primary teacher education courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. There will be additional places provided in the priority areas of STEM, Irish and Foreign Languages. While the numbers graduating from post primary teacher education courses – both at undergraduate and postgraduate level, have remained broadly constant over the past number of years, the number of students entering post primary is increasing and will continue to do so until 2025. The Government is responding to this growth by increasing the number of places on post primary teacher education programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The state has set out new strategies in STEM, foreign languages and digital. Each of these strategies is committed to taking action to address the supply of teachers in these areas. The new measures are:

The Universities will increase the capacity on undergraduate initial teacher education programmes by an estimated 280 places in 2018. This includes an increase in the priority areas of STEM, Irish and foreign languages of more than 100 places, an increase of over 40% on 2017 in these areas. At postgraduate level, the Universities will increase the capacity on PME programmes by more than 100 places in the priority areas of STEM, Irish and foreign languages. The universities and Postgraduate Applications Centre (PAC) have extended the closing date to Friday 13 April for applications for entry to PME programmes for Irish and the targeted STEM and foreign language subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, French, German, Spanish and Italian). Minister Bruton said this year’s provisional CAO figures show an 8% increase in those applying to study primary education and 4% increase to secondary education.

An Foras Pátrúnachta plans multilingual future THE largest patron of Irish medium schools in the country, An Foras Pátrúnachta (AFP), has launched a new initiative to advance multilingualism across its nationwide school network, with a view that pupils will leave primary school proficient in three languages. AFP is promoting Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), which is an approach to language learning where the target language, such as German, French or Spanish, is used to teach both content and language, for example teaching maths through Spanish. A series of pilot projects to test the new method will begin shortly and will be open to all 65 of AFP’s primary schools. The first of these will involve Gaelscoil Eiscir Riada in Lucan, which began teaching through

German last November. AFP already employs a similar immersive method of language learning in its teaching through Irish across its school network, such as in Gaelscoil an Chuilinn in Tyrrelstown. With over 170 pupils from Ireland, China, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, France and Spain, many pupils in Gaelscoil an Chuilinn already speak a third language at home. Gaelscoil an Chuilinn will participate in the pilot programme from September 2018. General Secretary of An Foras Pátrúnachta, Caoimhín Ó hEaghra, said: “In a changing Ireland and international situation, it will be vital to expand our range of languages spoken fluently. Brexit is likely to have a significant linguistic effect over time, and Ireland needs to respond imaginatively to these new challenges.”

100,000 children to take part in Tech Week 2018 TECH Week 2018, Ireland’s national festival of technology aimed at sparking an interest in technology and related study and careers among students, parents and the public takes place all over Ireland this year from 22nd - 28th April. Organised by the ICS Foundation, the social enterprise arm of the Irish Computer Society, and supported by Science Foundation Ireland and Amazon Web Services this exciting week of events will see more than 100,000 students take part in a range of fun activities, including the finals of several national Tech Week events. The week will be jam-packed with events taking place all over the country. School students will be challenged on their computational thinking skills at the National Bebras final in NUI Maynooth on Saturday, 21st April, and coding projects will be showcased by school children in the Scratch Programming Final in UL on Wednesday 25th April. Jim Friars, CEO of the Irish Computer Society said: “Tech Week helps engage young people with STEM by introducing them to it in a new way, which is hands-on, puts them in the driver seat and focuses on building their confidence. "We hope that Tech Week will inspire thousands of young people across Ireland to make, create and invent with confidence and curiosity, and increase engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.”

BA in Digital Marketing Degree launched at the Institute of Technology Tallaght MINISTER for Children and Yo u t h A f f a i r s K a t h e r i n e Zappone launched the Bachelor of Arts in Digital Marketing (TA 117), a brand new, careerfocussed Level 7 degree beginning full-time in September 2018 at the Institute of Technology Tallaght. Developed in conjunction with representatives of Dublin’s vibrant digital community, this new degree boasts Ireland's newest digital marketing qualification and a host of subjects that are sure to attract the Instagram and Snapchat generation, as well as their future employers. Employment-focussed degree Following extensive research throughout Dublin’s Silicon Docklands and the wider busin e s s c o m m u n i t y, I T T ’ s Department of Marketing and Business Computing developed this brand new, employmentfocussed degree, which is particularly relevant to the needs of Ireland’s fast-expanding technology sector, where ICT employers are growing their business operations at an exponential rate, with growing salaries to match. It is now offered via the CAO for fulltime students starting in September 2018. At the same time, the part-time class will expand, as will the new special purpose awards: the Certificate in Social Media, Certificate in Digital Marketing, and Minor Award Certificate in Applied Digital Marketing. These short special purpose awards are primarily aimed at local industry and those looking for practical, industry-specific training in this field. The new degree is a hybrid of digital and IT skills with international marketing and communications. “There are several key pillars or learning pathways of continuous core themes throughout the degree”, explains Glenn Mehta, Head of Department and IT Tallaght Marketing graduate. Digital Pathway The Digital Pathway runs throughout the degree, and develops key Digital Marketing, Marketing Technology, Social Media and Applied Global Digital Skills. Complementing this is the IT Pathway, focused on developing core IT, Database Systems, Data Analytics and Visualisation Skills, as well as Web and App development. The BA in Digital Marketing is now open for application on the CAO (TA117) and for parttime applications, both starting in September 2018.

New Computing Horizons AT IT Sligo, we’ve learned a lot about teaching computing over the decades. One of those things is the way many students have a preconceived notion of what computing is and what their possible careers might be. Truth is, computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes. For example, more than half the jobs in computing are not with computing companies. Think of Uber, think of AirBnB - they dominate their field renting the time or service of others - and yet, without computing their business model is non-existent. Study, train, te volunteer abroad THIS month marks 31 years of one of the most successful EU programmes ever, Erasmus. Over 90,000 Irish students and teachers have had a chance to study and train in other EU countries with the support of the Erasmus networks and grants from the European Commission. These days, Erasmus Plus (as it's now known) is not only for university students but has expanded its reach to vocational training, apprentices and youth workers. Statistics show that more than twice as many EU students come into Ireland for Erasmus, as Irish students go to other Member States. Most recent figures show that about 4,000 Irish students a year go through Erasmus to other EU countries to study, while about 8,000 EU students a year come here to Ireland. More successful than ever The top receiving Irish colleges are UCD, followed by the University of Limerick and UCC. The EU countries sending the most students to Ireland for their Erasmus placements are France, Germany and Spain. The European Commission has published new figures showing that the EU's education and training programme, celebrating its 31st anniversary this year, is more suc-

cessful and open than ever. In 2015, Erasmus+ enabled 678,000 Europeans to study, train, work and volunteer abroad, more than ever before. In the same year, the EU invested â&#x201A;Ź2.1 billion in over 19,600 projects involving 69,000 organisations. These are the main findings of the Erasmus+ Annual Report for 2015 published by the European Commission. Results also show that the programme is well on track to meet its target of supporting 4 million people between 2014 and 2020. Mobility broadens horizons Jyrki Katainen, Vice-President responsible for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness, and former Erasmus student at the University of Leicester (UK) said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Education is vital in equipping people with the knowledge, competences, skills and ability to make the most of their potential and of the opportunities open to them. "Mobility broadens our horizons and strengthens us further. Erasmus can offer both. As a former Erasmus student, I have experienced this first hand. "I encourage other students and in particular teachers, trainers, youth workers and vocational education and training students to also make

Opening up opportunities Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, said: "Erasmus has been opening up opportunities to young people for over three decades now, enabling them to develop vital skills, including social and intercultural skills, and promoting active citizenship. "By connecting people and supporting them in working together, the programme plays a key role in empowering our youth to build a better society. This is the solidarity Europe needs, now more than ever. I want to ensure that Erasmus+ can support even more people from a wider range of backgrounds in the future". Still expanding In 2015, Erasmus+ expanded even further by enabling, for the first time, higher education institutions to send and receive more than 28,000 students and staff to and from countries beyond Europe. France, Germany and Spain remain three top sending countries, while Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom receive most of the Erasmus+ participants. Feedback from participants con-

teach, work or ad with Erasmus+ firms that time spent abroad with Erasmus+ is time well spent: 94% say their skills have improved and 80% feel that it has boosted their career opportunities. One in three students who do traineeships abroad through Erasmus+ is offered a position by their host company. Societal challenges The report also gives an overview of steps taken by the Commission to adapt Erasmus+ to help the EU and Member States tackle societal challenges, such as the integration of refugees and migrants. For instance, the programme's Online Linguistic Support system has been extended to benefit 100,000 refugees over the next three years; â&#x201A;Ź4 million have been made available for this. The aim is to enable especially young people to enter the host countries' education systems and develop their skills. Campaign launch The publication of the report coincides with the launch of the campaign marking the 30th anniversary of the Erasmus programme (called Erasmus+ since 2014 because it benefits more people through a wider range of opportunities). Events took place throughout 2017 at European, national and local

levels to highlight the positive impact of Erasmus both on individuals and society as a whole, and to give all those involved the opportunity to debate how the programme should evolve in the future. Over the past 31 years, Erasmus+ and its predecessors have supported not only more than 5 million students, apprentices and volunteers, but also staff and youth exchanges, some 9 million people in total.

Background Erasmus is one of the most successful programmes of the European Union. For over three decades, it has been offering in particular young people opportunities to gain new experiences and broaden their horizons by going abroad. What started as a modest mobility scheme for higher education students back in 1987, with only 3,200 students in its first year, has developed over the last 31 years into a flagship programme benefiting almost 300,000 higher education students per year. At the same time, the programme has become much broader, providing opportunities for study periods and traineeships/apprenticeships for both higher education and vocational education and training students, youth exchanges, volunteering and

Transnational partnerships The current Erasmus+ programme, running from 2014 to 2020, has a budget of â&#x201A;Ź14.7 billion and will provide opportunities for over 4 million people to study, train, gain work experience and volunteer abroad. The programme also supports transnational partnerships between education, training and youth institutions as well as actions in the area of sport to contribute to developing its European dimension and tackle major cross-border threats. Moreover, the programme promotes teaching and research activities on European integration through Jean Monnet actions. Achill Archaeological Field School 2018 IRELAND’S oldest and best-known Archaeology Field School with over 26 years of experience of training archaeology and anthropology students in the techniques of fieldwork and archaeological excavation. Redefining the concept of ‘Hire Education’

ICT Associate Professional is the new National Apprenticeship Programme for all tech enthusiasts wishing to pursue a career in Ireland’s buoyant technology sector. Over 12,000 jobs are currently available in tech – as highlighted by the recent FIT ICT Skills Audit. 75% of these roles can be facilitated through tech apprenticeship programmes, providing immediate employment opportunities for job seekers and students.

Who is the programme for? Age: Programme is aimed at 1825 year olds but all adults (18+) can apply. Qualifications: A minimum of Leaving Cert (or equivalent). All candidates have to meet Aptitudes Assessments administered by FIT. Attitude: All candidates should be energetic tech enthusiasts with a determination to work in the ICT sector. The first six months of the programme involve intensive off-the-job training in a dedicated technology training centre. The remaining 18 months are a combination of on-thejob experience supplemented with training centre instruction. All training costs of the apprentices are covered by the State. FIT manages all aspects of the programme and co-ordinates employer input. Participating companies employ the apprentice throughout their apprentice-

ship and facilitate the on-the-job application of learning. Apprentices hone their skills while contributing to product development, technological advancement and talent development. Apprentices employed under contract receive payment to the value of €260 - €290 p.w. in the first year and €340 - €385 p.w. in year two. On successful completion of the programme, qualified apprentices typically progress into full-time positions within their sponsoring companies. This enhances the talent portfolio while increasing productivity and competitiveness in those enterprises. What is the ICT Associate Professional Apprenticeship programme? This new programme adopts a learning-by-doing format of ICT skills development, giving new meaning to the concept of 'hire education'. Over a two year period the programme combines off-the-job skills training with on-the-job application, and culminates in the

attainment of the ICT Associate Professional Apprenticeship Award. Participating companies are keen to recruit smart people with smart skills and this new programme will enable participants to 'earn while they learn'. In September 2017, FIT was appointed by the Apprenticeship Council to deliver two technology apprenticeships at Level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFO). A pilot programme was 'road-tested' by over 150 leading technology companies who sponsored 249 candidates over a two year period. The feedback from these tech companies on the calibre of talent they attained was exemplary. The developer will need to be able to interpret design documentation and specifications. Examples of work include information databases, programs that control robotic systems, and cloud and mobile applications. With experience, you could become a senior developer with responsibility for project management, planning and research, or move into areas, such as systems design, IT architecture and business systems analysis. Partnership Approach P e t e r D a v i t t , C E O o f F I T, explained that the new tech apprenticeships were as a result of a strong partnership approach between government, the tech sector and the national education & training system. He praised the role of the Department of Education, the Apprenticeship Council, SOLAS and QQI for providing the policy and implementation structures necessary to enable new apprenticeships to flourish. In particular he acknowledged the key role of Education and Training Boards who are partnering with FIT throughout the country in the delivery of the training elements of the tech apprenticeships. FIT Associate Professional Systems & Networks The primary role of a network engineer is to design, install, maintain and support communication networks within an organisation or between organisations. Network engineers need to maintain high levels of operation of communication networks to provide maximum performance and availability for their users, such as staff, clients, customers and suppliers. They understand and work in areas such as network configuration, cloud, network administration, security and performance management, and are able to give technical advice and guidance. Professional Recognition Award: Portfolio of evidence (e.g. logbook, work-related project report) of professional development and applied learning in the workplace mapped to award standards. Internationally recognised industry certification selected to match the workplace technology environment e.g. A p p l e , C i s c o , C I W, CompTIA, HP, IBM, Linux, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, VMware etc.

ESB Networks a programme open “IF YOU like a change and a challenge, in a job where no two days are the same and not a day goes by that you don’t learn something new – then it really is the job for you.” This is the advice of Liam Holt, a current ESB Networks apprentice. The ESB Networks apprenticeship programme is currently open and seeking applications to it’s next phase of recruitment for apprentices. In 2015, ESB Networks announced a five-year plan to recruit 300 new apprentices as part of a large-scale recruitment and development programme. To date over 200 apprentices have been recruited, this year ESB Networks are seeking to further recruit up to 70 new apprentices. Classroom and on-the-job training As an Apprentice Network Technician, recruits receive on the job training, working as part of front-line teams, as well as classroom-based learning. Apprentices benefit from varied work experience, working indoors and outdoors, and learning about technology, customer service, and delivering results under pressure. They learn a variety of electrical and practical skills and, upon completion of the programme obtain a QQI Advanced Level 6 Electrical Trade Certificate. The ESB Networks Electrical Apprenticeship is SOLAS standards-based, consisting of 208 weeks over four years. During this time, there are seven SOLAS phases and ESB Networks off job training, including phases 1, 3, 5 and 7 are on the job, working closely with a qualified Network Technician on varied sites across ESB Networks. The SOLAS phases 2, 4 and 6 consist of off the job training modules, with phases in a SOLAS Training Centre and one of the IT Colleges around the country. Ireland’s premier design college DUBLIN Institute of Design is a specialised private design college located in the heart of Dublin city. Most of our introductory courses are a progression route to further study, with a corresponding fee reduction. Competition Winners Our students have performed very strongly in

international design competitions over the last few years. Graphic Design student Alessandra Ravida won last year’s IDI’s (Institute of Designers in Ireland) Grand Prix Graduate Award. This is the most prestigious student / graduate award in Ireland in the Design sector, with the winner chosen by both academic and industry judges. This was the first time that a student from a private college won this award. Several of our students have been shortlisted at the IDI Graduate Awards over the last few years. As a Year 3 student, Alessandra was awarded membership of one of the world’s most prestigious graphic design organisations, the International Society of Typographic Designers, based on her competition entry Parallax, a critical reflection on the role of science in society. The previous year, Graphic Design student Laurie Concannon was selected as overall winner of the prestigious International Yamaha Graphic Design Award. Laurie’s design was chosen out of over 1000 entries, from 90 different countries, by a panel of renowned international designers. As part of her prize, Laurie received $10,000; one of the world’s biggest prize funds for any student competition. Fashion Design student Ágota Pfening was awarded first prize in her category at the 2017 Frankfurt Style Awards student fashion competition. Many of our students have been shortlisted in this prestigious international competition over the past 3 years, so we were delighted with Ágota’s success. Recent Developments Responding to changing industry demands, we provide an intense 8-week course in Revit and Level 2 BIM. Led by architects from some of Ireland’s prominent architectural firms, the course delivers multiple skill sets that have become industry-standard in Ireland’s construction industry over the past few years. Once again, we offer this course is a parttime basis. Applications We are now accepting applications for the 2018 /2019 academic year. Horticulture as a career path THE Teagasc College of Amenity Horticulture is located in the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin’s northside suburb of Glasnevin. At this location we teach full time courses in Horticulture at Level 5 (Certificate, 1 year), Level 6 (Advanced Certificate, 1 year) and Level 7 (Ordinary Degree, 3 years). We have approximately 200 students from all over the Dublin, the greater Leinster area and beyond. Fantastic outdoor classroom Students who enter the courses have the ability to learn in the fantastic outdoor classroom which is the plant collection of the National Botanic Gardens complimented by the new state of the art college teaching facilities which were completed in 2014. The Real Student's Review HI, my name is Aaron, and I’m going to tell you all the reality of being a student. I'll start from the very start. I went to secondary school and I completed my Leaving Cert. I got a pretty good result of just over 400 points. In the months leading up to the Leaving Cert my school began to schedule regular college talks and guidance counsellor meetings to ‘help’ me and my classmates choose what we would like to do after secondary. If anything, these talks and meetings did nothing other than confuse me and make it harder for me to decide what I wanted to do. My school would constantly remind us that it was our choice. However, at the same time they would always remind us that '90 per cent of last years' Leaving Cert students are curre n t l y s t u d y i n g i n t h i rd l e v e l education doing a level 8 degree'. Choice or no choice? So, yea, it was our choice of what to do after the Leaving, but there was a huge amount of pressure placed on students. We were told to do a Level 8 by the school, our friends and even our family, because that's what everyone else was doing. But was it really? The truth about it is that at the time when I was told 90 per cent of the lads in the year before me were in university doing a Level 8, they were. But what about a year or even two years later? Were 90 per cent of them still doing Level 8’s? Well nobody really tells you the honest answer to that. So here I am, and I am going to give everyone a chance to learn from my experience. So I did all the steps everyone else was doing, I applied for courses through the CAO. I applied for both Level 8 and Level 6/7. Then came the end of August and the first round of CAO offers. All of a sudden, it was decision time. Most of my friends had already chosen to do an Arts degree at Level 8 in a university, but I was still unsure. I wasn't ready to throw myself into a huge big campus and huge big lecture halls, trying to study a subject that I wasn't really that convinced I was interested in. This was the point I started to

panic and thought: “well I better pick something or I'll be left behind”. All I needed was more time to decide what I wanted to do, and then my mind was made up. I deferred my Level 8 for the year and chose to go to a college of further education to give myself a chance to find out what my real interests were. My parents were quite supportive. They were glad that I was taking a year to figure out what I wanted to do. I think they were pleased as well because after the expenses of getting me through sixth year, they weren't in too much of a hurry to start forking out large sums of money for fees and accommodation etc. Left behind... So everyone else I knew was packing up their bags and heading off to university, including my best mate Glenn, while I stayed at home and attended my local college of further education. I'm not going to lie, it felt pretty rubbish at the time, as if I was being left behind. Glenn chose to study medicine in university, a 5 year degree course. He was now part of that ‘90 per cent’ , while I was not. The year began and things got very busy, very fast. I began to lose contact with Glenn but promised each other we'd meet up again before the end of the year. Turns out, I didn't really mind not being part of that ‘90 per cent’. The college I went to was absolutely brilliant. I was shown how to use computers properly, Microsoft Word, taught about plagiarism and everything else I needed to know to prepare myself for the big campus I was planning on going to next year. the classroom gave the tutor more time to work with each person indiv i d u a l l y. T h i s w a s e x t r e m e l y beneficial to me, because I don't always get everything the first time. Over the course of the year I began to realise that my favourite class to attend was business and marketing, so I knew that I had made the right choice to come to this college because I was finally coming to an understanding of my interests. The following year I went on to university and I am now in my second year in a Level 8 Business Marketing degree. Over my first year in university, I noticed how many students dropped out due to lack of interest or not having the proper tools to deal with university life. However, I did not drop out and I would like to say that is thanks to the study skills and other tools that my tutors back in my local college gave me. I never met up with my mate Glenn at the end of that previous year, not for any main reason or anything, it just didn't happen. It's been over two years since I seen him now so I decided to drive out to his house and drag him out for a catch up. Dropped out Glenn isn't part of that '90 per cent' anymore. In fact he dropped out of university after his first year and didn't even complete his final exams. He explained to me that he actually had no interest in Medicine at all and he was far from able for the course at the time, having just completed his Leaving Cert the year before, it was all just too much stress for him. He's been working for the past year packing meat in the local meat factory on minimum wage and currently has no plans of returning to college. So take my advice, don't just do what everyone else is doing or fall under the pressure that your school may put you under, but instead make up your own mind. Everyone doesn't have to take the same path to university, everyone isn't the same and that year in my local college of further education taught me that. Education 31

Take your creative technology skills to a new level at Cavan Institute THE recently published review of the Further Education section in Ireland highlighted the need for FE colleges to produce graduates with industry relevant skills. Courses in Sound Production and IT Support are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs of industry. Gaming Cavan Institute offers a suite of courses in Gaming: Games Design and Games Programming at QQI Level 5 and Games Development at QQI Level 6. New skills and confidence IN September Dunboyne College of Further Education will commence its 16th year of offering a quality education product to Meath, west Dublin, north Kildare and surrounding areas. We have grown to over 670 students doing QQI level 5 and 6 courses at our campus in Dunboyne Business Park. As well as being the only dedicated PLC further education college in County Meath, west Dublin, Kildare and the surrounding areas, over 90% of the students who have achieved a full QQI level 5 award with Dunboyne College in recent years have received third level offers and countless others have proceeded directly to employment. The feedback on the courses from students has been excellent in terms of the new skills and confidence; students felt they received the confidence to go on to future learning, to build up their skills, and to access job opportunities. Courses are increasing in popularity with this year over 1960 students applying for 600 places. An ideal route One year QQI level 5 Programmes like the majority run in Dunboyne are an ideal way to pursue a course in an area of interest and to access a third level course. By having a day a week in work experience students can also put into practice their skills and assess their competency. The flexible options in Dunboyne allow students to sample various modules in September to make sure they are pursuing the correct course choice. Students often do far better at further education level as they are

now studying in an area of their passion and aptitude like nursing, sports or cookery rather than in the Leaving Cert where Irish English Mathâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s etc were compulsory. As students also learn referencing, research and self-directed learning they tend to stay the full third level course afterwards unlike many who go straight from leaving cert not very sure of their options. Dropout rates of less than 5% at higher education for those who do a further education course like those in Dunboyne College first, can be compared to an average of 8 to 10% drop out rate in the universities and 20% in the IT colleges. Range of places There are now a whole range of places available to Dunboyne College graduates in certificate and degree courses in Maynooth University, DCU, DIT, UCD, IT Blanchardstown, TCD; and with many other institutions around the country through the QQI Links Scheme. This year over 270 of students received offers including 80 to Maynooth University, 126 to IT Blanchardstown and 70 to DIT and 19 to DCU among others. Also this year the college introduces Psychology, Sports Injury Prevention, Liberal Arts and Human Resource Management to add to the courses in Equine Business, Airline Studies, Hairdressing, Pharmacy Assistant, Beauty Therapy, Office Administration, Retail Studies, Employability Skills, Computer Systems and Networks, and Creative Media which were introduced over

Skills to progress both in Further Education and the Workplace ST LOUIS Community School in East Mayo has been offering PLC courses for over a decade now and continue to respond to learner and employer need. A fantastic illustration of this commitment is the introduction of the QQI Level 5 Award in Education & Training. This new course will provide the opportunity for vocational specialists to get the skills and qualifications needed to deliver training in their area of vocational expertise. According to FE Coordinator Suzi Ottewell. “The perception of PLC courses has changed dramatically over recent years with many people – including recent school leavers and adults returning to education after a time away – choosing to use them as an alternative route into higher and further education.” Today’s PLC courses are very much focused on delivering the skills and knowledge needed to progress both in further education and the workplace. Great emphasis is put on honing practical skills, applying theories, encouraging self-motivation, developing personal skills such as communications, and gaining real insights

from work experience. “It’s important to remember that 8 distinctions in a level 5 or level 6 QQI course is equivalent to 384 points in the leaving cert, too” adds Suzi. Over the last decade this change in perception about PLCs has led to a great increase in what St Louis CS offers. Today there are courses in sport, childcare, busin e s s / I T, n u r s i n g , c o m m u n i t y c a re , hairdressing and beauty therapy. The facilities on offer have expanded, too, and now include dedicated beauty and hairdressing salons, exercise and cardio vascular rooms, IT rooms, and internet access with networked printing for research and project work. Off-site access to course resources and information is also available. “Another area of expansion is that St Louis CS is now an approved centre for three awarding bodies: QQI, City & Guilds and ITEC. This means that industry leading qualifications in hairdressing, beauty therapy and fitness instructing are all available at one location in East Mayo. St Louis CS is the only approved ITEC centre for Sports & City & Guilds centre for hairdressing in

Mayo ,” added Suzi. All the further education courses at St Louis are open to people with a leaving cert or equivalent qualification, although it’s important to check individual course entry requirements. The Dublin Climbing Centre is a state of the art indoor rock climbing wall located 200m from the Square Shopping Centre in Tallaght. What is the difference between Leaving Certificate Physical Education and Senior Cycle Physical Education Framework? Physical education in senior cycle is provided for in two ways: LCPE is an optional subject that learners study and are examined in, as part of the Leaving Certificate, with CAO points allocated accordingly. The SCPE Framework provides a planning tool for physical education for all students in senior cycle and will not be assessed as part of the Leaving Certificate examination. Can students who are taking LCPE also participate in SCPE? Schools will decide whether students who are studying LCPE can also participate in SCPE.

New policy prioritises teaching foreign languages THE Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton has launched the government’s Strategy for Foreign Languages in Education 2017-2026. The plan sets out a roadmap to put Ireland in the top ten countries in Europe for the teaching and learning of foreign languages, through a number of measures targeted at improving proficiency, diversity and immersion. In the context of Brexit and the increasing importance globally of non-English speaking countries, the minister said that the government is taking action to ensure Ireland is well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Once the UK leaves the EU, Ireland will be one of only two English speaking countries in the Union. The teaching of the Irish language from an early age, mean that children are exposed to bilingualism from a young age. Ireland's position as a small, open economy at the centre of

the world, also puts the country in a unique position. This strategy aims to maximise the state's assets, by ensuring our education and training service is well equipped to respond to a changing global environment. Something for everyone in the class at GoQuest GoQuest is an indoor multi challenge themed arena for older children, teenagers and adults. The arena has 28 unique challenge rooms for groups of up to 100 to try and complete during a fun filled session. Education and fieldwork opportunities at the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark

GEOPARK is an area with really special rocks and landscapes. These may be special because they are good for education, or because they are of great scientific value. They may also be special because the rocks and landscapes are very rare, or simply because they are exceptionally beautiful. Geoparks aren’t just about rocks and landscapes though, they also include places that have important history and archaeology, fascinating plants and wildlife, and often intriguing folklore. After all, many of these are intimately linked with the ground beneath our feet. About the Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) endorsed Geopark status was first awarded to the Marble Arch Caves and adjoining Cuilcagh Mountain Park in 2001 and since this time the Geopark has expanded rapidly from these two original sites. In 2007 and 2008, the Geopark underwent two phases of expansion first into public access lands in west Fermanagh and secondly into west Cavan making the Geopark not only one of the largest in the

world but, also the first cross-border Geopark in the world. In 2015 UNESCO officially recognised the Global Geoparks Programme, Creating Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark. The Geopark now stretches from the northern shores of Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh to Lough Oughter in County Cavan. The Geopark is jointly managed by Fermanagh & Omagh District Council and Cavan County Council.

The Marble Arch Caves' natural underworld MARBLE Arch Caves are one of Europe’s finest showcaves allowing visitors to explore a fascinating, natural underworld of rivers, winding passages and lofty chambers. Lively and informative guides conduct tours past a bewildering variety of cave formations. Stalactites glisten above streamways and chambers, while fragile mineral veils and cascades of creamy calcite coat walls and create shimmering terraces. Spectacular walkways allow easy access while powerful lighting reveals the stunning beauty and grandeur of the caves. Electrically powered boats glide through huge caverns carrying visitors along a subterranean river. Tours last for 75 minutes and are suitable for people of any age and of average fitness. Comfortable walking shoes and a warm sweater are recommended. Opening times: March 13th – June: 10am – 4.30pm every day; July – August: 10am – 5pm every day; September: 10am – 4.30pm every day; October: 10:30am – 3:00pm every day;

November – February: CLOSED. It's advisable to phone to ensure that you can be accommodated and to check the availability of tours as the caves can be affected by heavy rain. Marble Arch Caves are located in a National Nature Reserve in the shadows of Cuilcagh Mountain and have coach and car parking, toilets and baby changing facilities, souvenir shop, restaurant, exhibition area, free audio-visual presentation and free WiFi. Education packages are available for school children and for those interested in lifelong learning. An events programme is delivered throughout the year.

Cuilcagh Mountain Park CUILCAGH Mountain and the Marlbank area provides some of the most spectacular scenery in Fermanagh. At 665m, Cuilcagh is the highest point in Fermanagh, and the only true mountain. Its distinctive table-top profile is easily identified across the region and forms the focus of an area rich in geology, archaeology, folklore, flora and fauna. The mountain itself is topped by gritstone, exposed in places as dramatic cliffs sweeping down to the lower sandstone and shale slopes. The middle slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain are covered with a thick layer of peat and form one of the best examples of a blanket bog ecosystem in the north of Ireland. The lower slopes of Cuilcagh Mountain are formed of limestone with its associated (karst) landforms and complex cave systems.

Franciscans Missionaries of Mary

A community with other sisters and in the wider community of the church MY name is Neide, I am a psychologist, I am 30 years old and I want to be a nun! Yes, nuns still exist and yes, there are still people that want to become religious sisters! – Weird? no! So, here is the answer to two of the most common questions asked by my friends and people I meet when I reveal this “IN-sane” plan for my life: “What exactly is a nun?" "What is it that you want to do?” …followed by… “How did you know you wanted to do that?” I am a pre-novice with the Franciscans Missionary of Mary - so much of the answer is in the name! I want to belong to the Franciscan Family, meaning I want to live the Gospel values of Love for God and others in a very simple and detached way. St Francis tells us that the best way to be able to Love God freely and totally is by freeing ourselves from the “things” that distract us. He speaks about lady poverty (one of the vows that hopefully I will make!). So I look forward to living a life that is rooted in God and in the beauty of all things created, and I want to be able to share this unique, all fulfilling Love with everyone. Out in the world with the people This brings me to the next word: Missionary! I have too much energy to be able to endure a life in an enclosed convent. I am called to live this amazing Love by being out in the world with the people! I want to be a missionary which means I get to share with everyone I encounter this Jesus with whom I fell in Love, and I can do that working in the nearest parish, or I can be sent to any part of the world, where I am needed. By making the vow of obedience, I am saying that I am free to go wherever, and to do whatever, to live out the Gospel!

No reservations And F.M. of Mary… well our foundress calls Mary the “way within the way”. She is the role model…simple, humble. Mary said yes to God’s Love without reserve, even when faced with a very irrational and hard request “will you carry Jesus, my Son to the world?". Out of Love Mary says yes, and she completely surrenders herself and all her plans to God. And as Mary, I too am in-Love with this wonderful God, Jesus, my best friend! And I too want to surrender my All to him, because this is what we do when we are in-love, right? We surrender with no reservations! Here enters the vow of chastity…I surrender my Love to God entirely! And vow to Love Him in poverty and wealth, sickness and health for the rest of my life! – it is just like a wedd i n g v o w, a n d w i t h t h e m o s t amazing Man/God ever! This, in religious life, is lived in community – in the community with other sisters, and in the wider community of the church, and in a wider community that is all of creation. We are all a big family!

An idea was planted How did I end up here? In a nutshell, I used to be a rebel kid, I grew up in an amazing family, committed and very active in the church and understood from an early age that faith was something great that kept my parents and grandparents going no matter what happened! Faith was the fuel! I was certainly not that holy! I was a terrible teenager! Cutting a long story short, something in me changed when I was about 15, I suddenly realized how empty the things I was trying to achieve were. …I felt “there has to be more to life than this, which makes me miserable”… at this point I was studying in a school with sisters, and it was the first time at the age of 15 that the idea was planted in my brain! And I fought against it, big time!!! So, I am 30 right…and have been running away from God since then until now…but the signs were ALWAYS there: - great party life (empty) – being involved with youth in the parish (happy); - being in a relationship (incomplete) – praying and meeting Jesus in the Eucharist (fulfilled and overflowing with Love); - Having many things (pointless) – sharing what I have with others (Joy); and so on… It took me 15 years to finally have the courage to tread the path that clearly gives me peace and joy…my vocation! If any of this rings a bell, maybe… just maybe…look into it! Christ might be telling you that he also has something a bit 'out of the box' for you, and if I can do it, believe me, everyone can!

What is central in my vocation is the surprise of God. I was brought up without any clear understanding of God or belief in a god. Subsequently the discovery of God in the world was a surprise to me: it was something amazing, and something which has led me on an unexpected journey. As an engineer to see the complexity of God’s creation made me realise we live in a world which is made to be discovered and which points us in the direction of the creator. The scientific discoveries of the last few decades have shown that the Big Bang cannot be just a coincidence, that life has a clear purpose; that there is a clear plan and design to everything. Apart from the initial discovery of a creator, the most surprising discovery for me was the fact that God cares. That He is a God who is looking out for me, a God who wants to know me. A God who wants to be part of each and everyone’s life, in whatever way our lives go. Whatever vocation you are called to, God is waiting to become part of it, each and every day.

This discovery made me decide to be baptised when I was 22 years old. During the following four years my spiritual journey brought me closer and closer to God and ultimately led me to respond to His call by leaving everything behind and following Him. To follow God as a Dominican and as a priest means to make God the absolute centre of one’s life. A life grounded in prayer and contemplation, in study and in preaching. The religious vocation is a call to give everything to God, everything that I am, and all of who I am. It is a call to trust in Him to guide me and an invitation to use whatever gifts He has given me. We are asked to step forward in trust and put out into the deep waters, not knowing what will happen. For me, the call to be a Dominican is a call to share with others the truth about God’s love for us. To share with them the great discovery I have made, in the hope that they too will experience the amazing reality of knowing God as a friend. As Dominicans, we are dedicated to the search for Truth, to the contemplation of the Truth and to the proclamation of this Truth, so that those we meet too may come to know the joy of knowing the Truth.
