HYBRIDDUAL DIPLOMA Explore & STANDOUT
Students combine their exchange year with online studies to get a US diploma!
J1/F1 Program + 4 Online Courses + Local High School Completion → USA High School Dual Diploma
Students study abroad in the U.S. and take 4 more credits online while completing high school at home to earn a diploma from Washington Academy, a reputable U.S. boarding school.
In the J1/F1 program, students get the experience of full immersion in the academic environment and extracurriculars at an American high school. They live with a host family (or at a boarding school) and gain English fluency and a deeper understanding of the culture.
The Hybrid Diploma program lets J1/F1 students cap off their study abroad with a USA diploma! How It works • By combining credits from abroad, online courses, and local high school classes, students are eligible for a U.S high school diploma. • Credits needed to earn the USA Diploma: J1/F1 + 4 • 6 Total credits required • J1/F1 students can use 2 credits from their year abroad • + 4 online courses • Washington Academy graduation course requirements: • 1 U.S. History Course • 1 English Course – either English 11 or 12 • + 4 electives • *up to 2 of these courses can be taken on the J1/F1 program • 1 credit = 1 course • AP courses are available as an option for elective choice • Online courses are asynchronous with live lectures twice a month in the core courses. Live lectures are optional, not required and recorded. There is no cumulative exam at the end.
When can students study? • Students can study online before or after their exchange program, or both. • Asynchronous courses allow students to start anytime and study at their own pace. • About 2 – 2.5 hours per week of study are needed for each course if students study for 40 weeks. • Asynchronous live Summer Cram courses are available.
These can be combined with synchronous courses or taken on their own.
Summer Cram Courses • The summer courses are taught on the platform, but are more condensed. • Synchronous sessions take place every day (M-F) with the intention of hitting 36 total synch hours. • Courses run 4 weeks. with 20 total sessions, so they run between 1.5 - 2 hours each session. • Students are expected to attend all sessions, but accommodations can be made. • Approximately .5 hours per day is expected outside of class time. • Students are allowed 4 weeks after the synchronous sessions ends to submit any outstanding work. • In the past, 2 courses were offered during the summer and classes were back-to-back every day with about a half hour in between. • Since summer cram courses are taught “live”, courses may include group projects, presentations, breakout group sessions, etc.
