What is RideHailing?
Part 1
What is Ride-Hailing?
Learning Facts
Ride-hailing involves using a special app to request a ride from a driver who has their own car
Examples:
UBER GRAB DIDI
How You Order A Ride:
The Driver downloads the app and creates an account so they can see ride requests. You download an app, add your payment information, and tell the app where you want to go.
The app sends out an alert to nearby drivers, showing that there is a job available. The first nearby driver to accept the notification gets the job
The driver gives you a ride, and the app automatically takes payment for the cost of the ride.
The app keeps some of the money for themselves, and pays the driver a portion
Other App Features:
Dynamic pricing: the app can make car rides more expensive when lots of people want to travel, like after a concert.
Regulations: some countries require drivers to get a special licence to be a ride-hailing driver, but others let anyone who has a licence do it
Ratings: most apps give you the chance to rate your driver/pas seger out of 5 after your trip, or leave your driver a cash tip. Your average rating is publicly displayed on your profile.

PART 1: WHAT IS RIDE-HAILING?
How Has Ride-Hailing Changed the Way We Travel?
Analysis
Convenience (how easy something is)
For the Passenger
Really fast to order, don’t have to go to a bus stop or find somewhere to park your car
For the Driver
Can choose which hours you want to work, and the app finds the customers for you
Cost
Cheaper than taxis because there is more competition More expensive than public transport because you’re travelling by yourself
Less money than working for a taxi, but more money during busy times (surge pricing)You have to buy your own car
Safety
Track the information of your driver BUTLess regulation means that some drivers might not be good at their job
Track the information of your passengers and give them a bad rating if they misbehave
How Does Competition Work?
e want to purchase called demand. people want the demand increases g.
Sally wants an apple e does, there is low ples. If all of her n apple too, there is or apples.
nd for something is ers can afford to y stomers and only to those who are willing to y the most money.
example, Sally might be only ng to pay $3 for an apple If two er friends would be willing to pay or an apple, the seller will make e money if he raises his price to
ncreases, so does price.
Ride hailing is different to other forms of transport because it is private and updated in real time to reflect competition. The app works as a ‘go-between’ to match passengers with drivers

PART 1: WHAT IS RIDE-HAILING?
A New Way to Work: The Gig-Economy
Learning Facts
The ‘gig-economy’ refers to jobs that people can do, kind of like small "gigs" or tasks, instead of working a regular 9-to-5 job. This means you don’t have a boss, so you also don’t get entitlements like paid leave or minimum wage.
PART 1: WHAT IS RIDE-HAILING?
Risks of the Gig-Economy
Uber drivers have to pay for expenses like their car and petrol. Once these costs have been paid, the average uber driver earns less than minimum wage per hour.
Because uber drivers are ‘contracted’ by Uber, not ‘employed’, they don’t get any paid leave to support them if they get sick or injured.
Uber drivers don’t have any bargaining power with Uber. This is because Uber can easily replace them with another driver. This means they can’t negotiate with Uber for better pay or protections.
Because you have to own a nice enough car to work for a ride hailing company, drivers can get trapped into predatory lending schemes.
Drivers don’t get any paid leave even when injured.

Ride-hailing: Ride hailing involves using a special app to request a ride from a driver who has their own car.
Ride hailing is different to other forms of transport because it is private and updated in real time to reflect competition. The app works as a ‘go-between’ to match passengers with drivers.
This affects:
Cost Convenience Safety
Ride-hailling is part of the gig-economy, which is different from a normal job because you don’t have a boss or fixed hours.
While this gives you freedom and flexibility, there are trade-offs:
Inconsistent pay
Lack of safety or regulation
No worker’s rights
Limited bargaining power
Skills We Learned:
Learning facts: learning what ride hailing and the gig-economy are
Analysis: ride hailing can be good for some people and bad for others in different situations
Speech building blocks: learning to give an introduction, reasoning and a conclusion.
