PART 1: LEARNING ABOUT IMMIGRATION
WHAT DOES CURRENT IMMIGRATION LOOK LIKE?
UN Migration released a 2022 report with an update on immigration in recent years
In 2020, 281 million people immigrated to a different countrythat’s 1 in 30 people in the world. The COVID-19 pandemic caused travel restrictions that led to much less immigration, but recently numbers have started to increase again.
Europe and Asia hosted the greatest number of immigrants in 2020, 87 and 86 million people respectively.
These are the countries that host the largest population of immigrants:
MODULE BY Number of Immigrants Percentage of Population United States 15.3% Germany 18.8% 38.6%
50.6 Million 15.8 Million Country Saudi Arabia 13.5 Million
These are the countries that the largest numbers of people immigrate from:
WHAT DON'T WE HAVE NUMBERS ON?
This data is based on legal migration, where people who moved to a new country got approval from that country’s government. There are also illegal immigrants - people who have moved to a different country without approval (we’ll discuss why people might do this later on) There are estimated to be tens of millions of illegal immigrants worldwide
Key takeaway
Millions of people immigrate around the world each year. The most popular countries to immigrate to are the United States, Germany, and Saudi Arabia.

WHY DO PEOPLE MIGRATE?
There are lots of reasons why people might choose to move to another country.
ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES
Many people choose to immigrate to other countries in search of better job prospects and economic opportunities They may seek higher wages, better working conditions, or a more stable economy to support themselves and their families. They may also immigrate alone and send money back to their families where the cost of living is cheaper.
EDUCATION
Some individuals immigrate to access higher-quality education and expand their knowledge and skills for themselves or their children. They may pursue university degrees, specialised training, or research opportunities in a country known for its educational excellence.
People may choose to immigrate for lots of reasons, including their career, education, family, or quality of life.

SPEECH BUILDING BLOCKS
Every speech should have three things: an introduction, reasoning, and a conclusion. Usually, debating speeches have more than one reason why something is good or bad. As such, we want to structure our speeches like this:
Introduction: briefly saying what viewpoint you are arguing for and why
Reason 1: Provide your first argument for your case
Reason 2: Provide your second argument for your case
Conclusion: Summarise what you have proven in your speech

WHAT CHALLENGES CAN IMMIGRANTS FACE?
While international immigration can provide exciting opportunities, immigrants can also face obstacles when they have moved to a new country.
Key takeaway
Despite the benefits of moving to a different country, immigration can also be challenging. Obstacles like discrimination, language barriers, and inaccessibility of public services can make it harder for immigrants to make the most of their new lives.
MODULE BY
PART 2: IMMIGRATION OBSTACLES
Language Barrier
One of the primary obstacles is the language barrier. Immigrants may face difficulties communicating effectively in the new language, which can impact their ability to find jobs, access services, and fully become a part of society.
Discrimination
Immigrants may face discrimination based on their ethnicity, nationality, or immigrant status. This can happen through unfair treatment, stereotypes, or exclusion from certain opportunities.
A NEW LIFE
PART 2: IMMIGRATION OBSTACLES
Job Challenges
When people move to a new country, they might have a hard time finding a job because they may not speak the same language, and their qualifications might not be recognized there. They might not know many people, or they might not understand how the job market works in the new place. This can make it tough for them to find a stable job that suits them and pays them well. As a result, immigrants may have a hard time earning enough money to live a good life in their new country.
MODULE BY
Access to Services and Benefits
Immigrants may have a hard time getting important things like healthcare, education, housing, and help from the government when they need it. They might not understand how things work in the new country, or they might have trouble speaking the language. This can make it challenging for them to access important services.
Stereotype -This is when some people think all members of a race or country are the same. But it's important to know that all people are unique and it's not fair to judge someone based on their race or where they came from
A NEW LIFE
Dictionary
ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS
These challenges are even greater for those who immigrate without permission from the host country. Any interaction with the government can risk getting caught, which could result in deportment - being sent back to your home country.
This means that illegal immigrants don’t have access to healthcare, can’t call the police, and can’t report when they are being taken advantage of.
Key takeaway
Illegal (or undocumented) immigrants go to different countries without the permission of that country. Because they can’t access services like the police, they can be vulnerable to exploitation.
MODULE BY PART 2:
IMMIGRATION OBSTACLES
CASE STUDY: JANITORS IN THE UNITED STATES
In recent years, several lawsuits and articles have emerged accusing large chain stores like Target of hiring undocumented migrant workers from Mexico and taking advantage of the fact that they had no way to complain to authorities about exploitation. Reports include locking janitors in the stores until the cleaning was complete, making them work long hours without overtime, and being paid less than minimum wage.
