PART 1: BUSINESS BASICS
Making a profit Increasing your revenue This can be done by increasing your prices, or by selling a larger number of your goods or services. Theresa is great at making cakes, so she decides to sell them for $10 each. She sells 5 cakes in one week, meaning she makes $50. The next week, Theresa raised her prices so the cakes are $15 each. She still sells five cakes, so her revenue increases to $75! The next week, Theresa decides to drop her prices back down to $10. She puts flyers up around her neighbourhood showing how affordable her cakes are. Knew people learned about her business, so she sold 10 cakes. That week she makes $100! Be careful though - sometimes if you make your product more expensive, fewer people will be willing to pay for it! If Theresa sold her cakes for $100 each, no one would want to buy them

MONEY MAGNETS I HOW TO ATTRACT BUSINESS SUCCESS
Decreasing your expenses There are lots of different things that contribute to the costs of running a business: Labour: if you have employees, you have to pay them wages or a salary Materials: if you make a good, you need to first purchase the ingredients required to make it Equipment: tools or technology you use while selling your product or service, Rent and utilities: if you have an office, you also need to pay for that office and its expenses like water and electricity.
Theo has a factory that he uses to make and sell tennis balls. Each ball costs $5 to make, and he sells them for $10. That means his profit per ball sold is $5. Theo’s factory is very large, and there’s a lot of space. He decides to move to a smaller building to reduce the cost of his rent. This decreases the cost of making his balls to $4, meaning that he now makes a $6 profit per ball sold. Theo also hires a team to trim the fuzz off the balls at the end of the production line. He hires three people for this job. He decides to buy a machine that will make it much faster to trim the balls, meaning he only needs one person to do the job that previously required three workers. This reduced the cost of the balls to $3 each, meaning he makes a $7 profit if he sells them for $10.

PART 2: MARKETING MADNESS
Types of Rhetoric Examples and storytelling Giving an example from the real world, or making up a story to use as an example, gives the audience something they can picture in their head. This helps your analysis feel more real. Trying to do schoolwork without the internet is difficult. Imagine you lived back in the 1970s and had to do a school project on an unfamiliar topic. You’d have to go to the library and spend hours looking through books to find all of the information you need!
Speaking with confidence If you sound like an expert on the topic, the audience is more likely to think that you know what you’re talking about. Speaking loudly, clearly, and with certainty makes a big difference. Take these two examples: A) “When you own a business, you need to be all over the numbers. The most important thing is making a profit!” B) “I’ve never owned a business at all, but I guess... uhhh... if I did, one of the things that might be important is profit?
MODULE BY

DEBATE & PUBLIC SPEAKING
PART 2: MARKETING MADNESS
Rhetorical questions A rhetorical question is one that you don‘t actually expect the audience to shout an answer to! You ask the question when there‘s an obvious answer. In debating, it‘s good to answer your rhetorical questions yourself after you answer them. If you don‘t, the other team might answer it for you in a way that is bad for your argument! Example: “How would you feel being bullied by other students at school? You’d feel scared in frightened, that’s how.”
MODULE BY
MONEY MAGNETS I HOW TO ATTRACT BUSINESS SUCCESS
Humour People love to laugh! Being funny during your speech can make you sound more interesting and make your audience eager to hear more. When using humour in your speech, make sure to use it appropriately. We don’t want to make jokes about sensitive topics or make fun of the other team. It’s also important to keep your humour on topic, or else people might get distracted from the point you’re trying to prove!
Rhetorical tools can be used to make your speech more persuasive. They can include examples, storytelling, confidence, rhetorical questions, and humour DEBATE & PUBLIC SPEAKING

When you’re riding a horse, you don’t even have to stay on the road! Horses can travel over all sorts of surfaces, meaning you won’t get stuck in traffic jams. They’re hardly smelly at all if you stay at the right end of them!
Using rhetorical language makes your points sound more persuasive.

Ethics
Thinking about what’s right and what’s wrong
When you run a business, you have to make sure you do so responsibly. Some people do bad business, and this can harm others. Let’s take a look at some of the ethical concerns about running a business:
DEBATE & PUBLIC SPEAKING
PART 3: MARKETING AND ETHICS
The Ethics of Business Truthful marketing When you sell a product, you can’t lie about its quality or what it can be used for. If people spend money on a good or service and are promised it will help them, they’re wasting their money and could even get hurt in the process. Example: Jess buys a ‘Super-Strong Table’ that promises to hold over 100kg of weight, but actually only holds 20. When she stands on the table to hang up a picture, it collapses and she hurts her leg.
MODULE BY
MONEY MAGNETS I HOW TO ATTRACT BUSINESS SUCCESS
Environmental impact Some companies cut corners to reduce costs, and in doing so hurt the environment. When you’re producing large quantities, you can also produce lots of waste or toxic materials that harm the planet. Example: Super-Strong decides to use a cheap glue to assemble their tables. This glue releases toxic fumes into the atmosphere, adding to air pollution.
DEBATE & PUBLIC SPEAKING
PART 3: MARKETING AND ETHICS
The Ethics of Business Taking advantage Some businesses can make their prices extremely expensive if they know that the customer has no other choice, even if that price will take away money that the customer needs for other necessities. Example: Biomed-Tech is the only company that has invented a cure for Orange Measles. Even though the medication only costs $2 to make, they sell it for $5000 because customers can’t buy it anywhere else.
