COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS Social media platforms, messaging apps, and video chats enable children to connect and interact with friends, family, and people with similar interests.
Screen time can be good for kids because it can allow us to develop our thinking and social skills, as well as allow us to express ourselves.
PIXELS & PLAYGROUNDS
PART 1: LEARNING ABOUT SCREEN TIME
What are the Risks Associated with Screen Time? Even though technology can be great for learning new skills, it can also have effects on kids’ development! Let’s take a closer look at some of these
LESS PHYSICAL ACTIVITY Kids must be physically active during the day to use up energy, learn things like coordination, and develop strength. If you’re sitting down looking at a screen, this means that you’re not on your feet doing exercise! Impacts: increased chance of childhood obesity, heart problems
MODULE BY
PIXELS & PLAYGROUNDS
POOR SLEEP Our brains are trained to stay on during the day and switch off at night - they use sunlight to help us know when we should go to sleep. Technology emits blue light, which can trick our brains into thinking it is daytime, which stops us from wanting to go to sleep. Impacts: can’t focus during school, feeling tired and cranky
PIXELS & PLAYGROUNDS
PART 1: LEARNING ABOUT SCREEN TIME
EYE STRAIN The screens are bright and have lots of moving images. When screens are really close to our faces, it tires our eyes out - this is called eye strain. Staring at a screen too long isn’t good for your eyes. Impacts: sore eyes, nearsightedness
Screen time also can create risks to our physical health, sleep and also safety.
MODULE BY
PIXELS & PLAYGROUNDS
SAFETY The internet can sometimes be dangerous because it is harder to monitor than in real life. Kids going on social media may be exposed to unhealthy influences, bullying, or adults who want to cause harm. Impacts: increased risk to safety and selfesteem.

“Screen time can be really scary if parents don’t keep an eye on what kids are doing. Sometimes, people are not who they claim to be online, so your child could be talking to a dangerous stranger.”
“The future contains so many possibilities for technology and learning. Through computers, we can take online classes and play educational games to help us learn.”
“You know, you don’t have to sit down when you have screen time. There are lots of games involving physical activity, like dancing games where you copy the characters on the screen.”
“Something should be done about parents who let children sit on their tablets all day, They’re not putting their kids’ health and wellbeing first.”

PART 2: FEELING ABOUT SCREEN TIME
Supervised screen time This involves parents having complete knowledge and access to what you do when using your screen. This could be parents having the ability to read your messages on social media, or only being able to play games when your parents are in the room Pros: Parents can make sure that their kids only engage in screen time that is good for them, like interactive puzzles or talking to their classmates Cons: Kids should have some degree of privacy for example, telling their best friend about a crush! Having your parents read everything could prevent you from gaining important life experience on your own.

Can you think of any different ways we could make sure that kids aren’t getting too much screen time, or that the screen time they are having is useful and safe?
There are lots of different ways we can try to reduce screen time and make it as beneficial as possible for kids, including time limits, supervision, and child-safe modes.
