WHAT IS A STEREOTYPE?
A stereotype is a fixed, oversimplified, and often unfair belief or idea that people have about a particular group of individuals.
It's a generalization that may not be true for every person in that group.
Stereotypes can be about things like how people look, what they like, how they behave, or what they're capable of.
It's important to remember that stereotypes can be hurtful and misleading, as they don't consider the uniqueness of each person.
YOU GO GIRL! YOU GO GIRL!
Where do stereotypes come from?
Stereotypes can come from a variety of sources, and they often develop due to a combination of factors:
Sources of Stereotyping
Education - Not Knowing Enough:
If we don't know much about a group, we might guess and end up with the wrong ideas.
If we don't know much about a country, we might think everyone there only knows how to speak one language.
Family and Friends - Copying Others:
If we don't know much about a group, we might guess and end up with the wrong ideas.
If we don't know much about a country, we might think everyone there only knows how to speak one language.

MODULE BY
GIRLS
In cartoons for example, they might show that old people are always angry, especially when kids are playing near their house. This might lead you to start avoiding your old neighbours or being afraid of your grandparents.
Society - Old Ideas:
Media Messages: Think about this: for the longest time, many viewed poor people as lazy, saying it’s their fault they are poor. Even though we know now that there are many reasons people are poor, like the lack of job openings and the government not providing their city with enough education, some people still believe that poor people can only blame themselves for their situation.
Can you think of any stereotypes that you hear in your everyday life?
Why do you think the stereotype is wrong?
YOU GO GIRL! YOU GO GIRL!
PART 1: BECAUSE YOU’RE A GIRL: STEREOTYPES ABOUT GIRLS
STEREOTYPES ABOUT GIRLS
Now let’s look at the common stereotypes society has about girls.
GIRLS ONLY CARE ABOUT PRETTY THINGS
Only interested in dolls and sparkly toys
Only care about how they look and what they weak
GIRLS AREN’T AS GOOD AS BOYS AT SCHOOL AND WORK
Not as good at subjects like science and math
Should only be in jobs like nursing or teaching
Bad at business and more “manly” jobs
GIRLS ARE MORE EMOTIONAL THAN BOYS
Too sensitive–they will get angry or cry over small things
Can be blinded by love, not logical
More caring–because they are sensitive, they are better at taking care of children
MODULE BY
GIRLS ARE WEAK AND BAD AT SPORTS
Not interested in sports or athletic activities
Unable to go through the training and pain needed to be good at a sport
Weaker and slower than boys
DID YOU KNOW?
The phrase “hit/fight/run like a girl” is used as an insult. It means that you are weak or you are doing something poorly.
GIRLS CAN’T BE BOSSES
Not assertive enough to be strong leaders
Don’t understand politics enough to lead the country
Have to stay at home to cook, clean, and care for the kids
Remember that these stereotypes don't define what all girls can do or be. Each person is unique and should be able to follow their interests, pursue their goals, and challenge these limiting beliefs.
YOU GO GIRL! YOU GO GIRL!
Case Study
Classic Disney Princesses like Snow White, Cinderella, and the Little Mermaid Embody Stereotypes
These characters were often made to look helpless, needing a prince to rescue them from their troubles Snow White, for example, relied on the prince's kiss to awaken her from a deep sleep. This creates the idea that girls are incapable of solving their problems and need help from a man.
Unable to help herself
Snow White relied on the prince's kiss to awaken her from a deep sleep. This creates the idea that girls are incapable of solving their problems and need help from a man.
Caring about how they look
In Cinderella, the women were shown as primarily focused on finding a prince, which can only happen when they attend the ball looking beautiful, complete with a glamorous dress and sparkly shoes.
Being too emotional
Ariel gave up everything from her family under the sea to her beautiful voice, simply because she was in love with a boy.
Can you think of other movies that do the same thing?

Rules
Discuss and decide as a class if the scenario below is an example of stereotyping or not.
SCENARIO:
Aisha is the captain of the school's robotics team. She's skilled at programming and troubleshooting, often leading her team to victory in competitions. Some students say, "Aisha must have had a lot of help from her brother, who's good at tech stuff."
Sam has crashed her car thrice since she got her driver’s license last month So when she volunteered to drive for a road trip, her friend Abdul said, “Someone else should do it, Sam is a bad driver.”

Nuri is very sick, so she hardly plays outside. After she fainted while trying to play basketball at school, the P.E. teacher said, “Don’t let Nuri join my class, she can’t play sports.”
During recess, Catalina and Kurt are playing soccer. Catalina scores a goal, and some kids comment, "Kurt, you're supposed to be the best player. Catalina is a girl and she's winning."
Stereotyping a girl is when we think she can’t do something simply because she is a girl, rather than because of her unique characteristics.

PART TWO
This is the basic structure of a rebuttal
Pinpoint: quickly refer to the other person’s argument. This is so the judge knows what part of their speech you are talking about. You want to keep this short because you want to save time for actually responding!
Reasoning: explain why their point isn’t true. The best rebuttal has multiple reasons that attack the point in different ways
Summarise: explain to the judge what it means for the debate, now that their point doesn’t stand.
Example:
“The second speaker said kids shouldn't have homework because they already learn enough in school. But think about it, homework helps us learn and practice what we're taught in school. Without homework, we might not remember things as well. When we realize this, it means homework is important for our learning."
0 PART 2: CONSTRUCTING REBUTTALS MODULE BY
1.
2. 3.
Today, we will follow similar steps as we learn how to rebut ideas that contradict each other.
First, what is a contradiction?
A contradiction happens when someone says two opposite things that can't both be true.
This usually happens when people are “trying to have their cake and eat it too” or have it both ways. So when an argument seems too good to be true, it probably is!
Imagine if someone says "I love dogs, they're the best pets," and then later says, "Dogs are too noisy and I don't like them."
It doesn't match! In a debate, if someone uses a contradiction, it's like they're mixing up their ideas We need to use ideas that make sense together, like puzzle pieces that fit to complete a bigger picture

Now, how do you rebut a contradiction?
Similar to rebutting an argument, we must follow a clear structure when explaining that a contradiction has been made.
After successfully rebutting the contradiction, the judge will disregard the second statement. So you must go on to rebut the first statement made by your opponent
Steps
PINPOINT
Quickly refer to the other person’s contradiction and the statement it contradicted. This is so the judge knows which statements in their speech you will claim are contradictory. You want to keep this short because you want to save time for actually responding!
EXPLAIN 1
Explain why their points are contradictory Show why the two ideas cannot both be true at the same time

PINPOINT
The previous speaker argued that we need to create special schools for immigrant children because they are heavily discriminated against, but also said that they can easily make friends with the local kids outside of school.
EXPLAIN
1. 2.
If immigrant kids are heavily discriminated against by locals, then the local kids discriminate against them. There’s no way they will be friends outside of school. But if local kids befriend immigrant kids, then the discrimination that the opponent talks about isn’t so bad. This means we don’t need special schools to protect them.
SUMMARISE
In conclusion, my opponent’s argument is contradictory. Judge, you should only credit the statement about heavy discrimination, which I will now rebut.

Case Study: #LikeAGirl campaign
Back in 2014, a big company called Procter & Gamble (P&G) noticed something important. As girls get older, they often start feeling less sure of themselves.
So, they asked people what it means to do things "like a girl." Sadly, the grown-ups showed it as not very good, like saying girls are not strong
But then, they asked younger girls to run "like a girl," and guess what? They ran strong and fast, just like anyone else! P&G wanted to change this and make "like a girl" mean something awesome.
So, they started a campaign called #LikeAGirl. They used lots of pictures and videos to show that being a girl is amazing and powerful. Many people watched these videos and it helped. Girls started feeling more confident about themselves because of this campaign.
Doing something “like a girl” doesn’t have to mean something bad. Everyone can help make the world a better place for girls by changing how we view them.
