Say ‘Hello’ to Pinocchio

EDWARDSVILLE — Anticipation grows to see the classic fable’s Pinocchio come face-to-face with an operatic villain in “Pinocchio: An Opera for Kids.” In this operatic adaptation of “Pinocchio,” presented to promote arts education, by Opera Edwardsville (OE), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and SIUE’s Meridian Society, the naive and trusting Pinocchio — a wooden puppet brought to life when Geppetto wishes upon a star — comes face to face with a villain, Dr. Dulcamara, and his traveling puppet show. When Pinocchio falls in love with the singing mechanical toy, Olympia, Dr. Dulcamara threatens to tear them apart — literally! Pinocchio finds a way to save the day, and learns the valuable lesson of telling the truth. As part of Opera Edwardsville’s focus on arts education, “Pinocchio: An Opera for Kids” will tour elementary schools in Edwardsville District 7, providing exposure not only to operatic performance, but to vocal performance and musical theater, in general. “Arts education is a primary goal for Opera Edwardsville,” said Opera Edwardsville founder Chase Hopkins, OE’s artistic director and “Pinocchio: An Opera for Kids’” stage director. “I’m thrilled to be working directly with students from SIUE’s vocal department, and
beyond excited that ‘Pinocchio’is touring eight elementary schools. “Plus, we’re able to provide a performance for the community, which will be completely free, on November 16th, at the Wildey Theatre, previously scheduled at the Edwardsville Public Library, but due to overwhelming interest, the library arranged for the venue change to the Wildey through Al Canal,” Hopkins noted. Opera Edwardsville and the SIUE Department of Music intentionally teamed up to provide this performance for the enjoyment of young audiences. The project is generously funded by the Meridian Society as a way to support arts education in schools. “There’s a lot of layers to this project, and I’m so grateful to SIUE Professor of Voice Marc Schapman for being our partner in this project, and the Meridian Society for their generous grant, which has funded this project,” Hopkins said. The Edwardsville Public Library Director, Jill Schardt, confirmed 95 registrations last week, in one morning, for the free-to-all-ages public performance of “Pinocchio: An Opera for Kids,” originally planned as an in-house library event. The opera is performed in English and only 45 minutes long. “We are moving this event to the Wildey because there has been so much interest,” Schardt explained to The Edge. “We anticipate more interest as it’s not even

‘Zombieland: Double Tap’ best three minutes in credits

In the grand scheme of things, 10 years isn’t that long, but, in Hollywood, it’s an eternity. Since “Zombieland” was released in October 2009, we’ve experienced almost the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe; the major of Disney acquisitions of Fox, Lucasfilm and Marvel; the downfall of Harvey Weinstein; and, the glut of sequels that leads us today to “Zombieland: Double Tap.” Movie franchises have proven time and time again that a long gap between installments leads to nothing but creative wheel-spinning and general disinterest from audiences. “Double Tap” squarely tips the balance to the latter. The re-tread plot of the new film is embarrassing. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) have spent that past decade surviving the zombie apocalypse by banding their little family together and playing it safe. The movie opens with them using the White House as a defensible refuge. The scant 90 minutes that follow show a rebellious Little Rock fleeing with a stranger (Avan Jogia) closer to her own age in a bid to “find herself” on a trip to Graceland. This nonsensical move gives an opportunity for a few new additions to the cast, like, Rosario Dawson as Reno and the amazing Zoey Deutch as Madison, an airhead who falls hard for Columbus. Thomas Middleditch and Luke Wilson have inflated cameos mid-film, as well. If you want to see graphic, cartoonish violence, more fourth-wall-breaking callouts than an episode of “The Family Guy” and clever ways a screenwriter can make a nothing idea flesh itself out to feature length, “Double Tap” is the movie for you. In the previous decade, the
four principle stars of “Zombieland” have run rough-shod over the entertainment industry. Harrelson was already a star when he started blowing off zombie heads, thanks to his long run on “Cheers.” Since 2009, though, he’s anchored two additional franchises (“The Hunger Games” and “Now You See Me,” also with Eisenberg), turned in a critically-praised performance in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and slayed television again with the only good season of “True Detective.”
Former child star Breslin has 17 credits, including an entire season of Fox’s “Scream Queens,” since her first run as Little Rock at age 13. Eisenberg was all over the stage and screen map, notably being Oscar-nominated for playing Mark Zuckerberg in “The Social Network” and giving an appropriately terrible performance as Lex Luthor in two “Justice League” films. Perhaps none of “Double Tap’s” cast has had a bigger decade than Stone. She parlayed her big breakthroughs in
“Superbad” and “Zombieland” to become a three-time Academy Award nominee (including winning Best Actress for “La La Land”), feminist icon and box office darling. Director Ruben Fleischer has continued to work steadily on big projects in the ensuing years, but he’s also the executive producer of ABC’s “Stumptown,” the most interesting new series on broadcast television this season. It’s an action detective show with a serialized story and biting snark. It also refuses to be
pigeonholed by any one genre. Check it out. Well, if you do go see “Double Tap,” I advise staying for the post-credits scene, in which Columbus narrates an apology for killing Bill Murray and shows the comedy hero at the outset of the epidemic. It was the best three minutes of the picture. “Zombieland: Double Tap” runs 99 minutes and is rated R for bloody violence, language throughout, some drug and sexual content. I give this film one star out of four.

NY ballet crowd fetes Herman Cornejo on 20th ABT anniversary
NEW YORK (AP) — On a night full of balletic leaps, the most joyous came during curtain calls, when iconic American choreographer Twyla Tharp bounded into the arms of dancer Herman Cornejo to celebrate his 20th anniversary on the New York stage. Cornejo, a dashing figure with a mop of dark hair and a breathtaking leap himself, has been a favorite of New York ballet audiences ever since he set foot on the American Ballet Theatre stage as a teenager from Argentina two decades ago. On Saturday night at Lincoln Center's David H. Koch Theater, the company honored his milestone with showers of confetti, garlands of flowers and a special ballet choreographed by Tharp, "A Gathering of Ghosts." The evening began with Cornejo, all in white, performing the title role in George Balanchine's "Apollo," debuting in the classic role at the seasoned age of 38.
It proved a perfect match for his dramatic sensibilities and his physical gifts of a feather-light jump and superb control. Dancing opposite him as Terpsichore was ballerina Misty Copeland, a longtime and frequent partner. Next came a short film in which Cornejo, as narrator, introduced himself. "Dance has given me a beautiful way of living," he said, noting how he first became enamored with ballet as an 8-year-old boy in Buenos Aires, when he saw a production of "Spartacus." He spoke of the influence of his sister, Erica Cornejo, a former ABT dancer who recently retired from Boston Ballet. Then Erica Cornejo herself came onstage for "El Chamuyo," a tango-inspired duet with her brother, a brief but crowd-pleasing piece to music by Francisco Canaro and choreography by Ana Maria Steckelman. The evening ended with Tharp's new work, a
whimsical piece in which Cornejo, in a matador-like jumpsuit in black and shiny silver, played "host" to ghosts including Louis XIV, Marie Antoinette, Proust and a character called "Greased Lightning." Then came the curtain calls, the ovations, the confetti descending from the rafters, and Tharp, extremely limber at 78, leaping into Cornejo's arms and wrapping her legs around him. Cornejo joined ABT in 1999 and swiftly moved through the ranks, becoming a soloist in 2000 and a principal in 2003. Though he captured the hearts of audiences with his superb technique, his relatively short height — he is 5-foot-6 — prevented him at first from getting the romantic leads in traditional story ballets. But that gradually changed, and he now dances roles like Romeo, Siegfried in "Swan Lake," and the prince in "The Sleeping Beauty," among many others.

“I think it’s really cool. When I was in elementary school we never had anything like this,” said Mossinghof, who played Hansel at Truman State in her first pants role. “I was not exposed to opera, not until college, so it’s a great idea to bring this to young kids.” Other cast members said similar lack of exposure when younger inspired their dedication to performing on OE’s “Pinocchio.” “This is my first big role in opera,” said SIUE sophomore Kristy Saddler, who performs as the Cat. “This is a lot of fun to be bringing to young people. Like Stephanie said, I had none of this in elementary school.” In elementary school, SIUE sophomore, Mile Wadlington, saw his first jazz band concert. “I thought it was so cool,” he recalled. “I thought they were rock stars.” This adorable piece is perfectly constructed for children to enjoy with dialogue and singing in English. As an introduction to opera and classical music, this adaptation re-purposes famous arias and excerpts from opera’s greatest hits, with new words to fit the story. Pinocchio comes face to face with several characters from opera, including Dr. Dulcamara from Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” and “Olympia,” a mechanical doll from the “Tales of Hoffman.” “’Pinocchio’ is fun, dramatic and silly,” Hopkins said, “while showcasing the drama and theatricality of opera. I can’t wait for our young audiences to see this show!” Schapman, who recently performed at the Touhill Center, has been a SIUE professor of vocal performance for 13 years. Schapman approached Opera Edwardsville to apply for the grant from the Meridian Society and has been instrumental in the project.

“I want to continue the grant for this project,” he said. “It opens accessibility to these kinds of programs and it’s a link to Opera Edwardsville, a professional company. “I’m making sure everything is going in a timely fashion and, in time, I hope to be an ambassador for this program.” Hopkin’s vision for Opera Edwardsville’s arts education outreach program is on track. “When I started Opera Edwardsville, I outlined a possible timeline for making proposals to collaborate with SIUE down the road,” Hopkins recalled. “I’m beyond thrilled that we’ve managed to collaborate (years) ahead of what I imagined. ”I’m grateful to Marc’s enthusiasm to get this project going. I’m also incredibly impressed with the work Marc and others at SIUE are doing — the students are incredibly talented and have been a joy to work with for this project. It’s also been great to work with set design-
er Roger Speide and costume designer Nathan Beilsmith.” As part of the collabortation, Opera Edwardsville has given the students involved in “Pinocchio” an opportunity to work with national and globally recognized vocal teacher Karen Brunssen. Brunssen teaches on the vocal faculty at Chicago’s Northwestern University and serves as the president of the National Association for Teachers of Singing. Brunssen can be found in masterclass and lecture around the world. Opera Edwardsville provided a masterclass with Brunssen this past September. Brunssen returns to Edwardsville this December to work with more students at SIUE. The Meridian Society awarded SIUE and Opera Edwardsville a joint grant to fund this arts education outreach project. SIUE Meridian Society, which awards annual grants to community based projects, generously funded the OE/ SIUE project. The first Merid-
ian Awards were presented in spring 2004. Since then, the Meridian Society annually provides financial awards to fund outstanding community outreach programs and projects, which are supported through SIUE departments and services. A committee, comprised of Meridian Society members, reviews award applications and presents recommendations to the larger membership. Annual membership dues make the awards possible. As an auxiliary organization of the SIUE Foundation, the Meridian Society promotes women’s leadership and invests in SIUE community-based projects. The Meridian Society gifts annual awards each spring to fund SIUE projects that provide direct services in the community. Since 2003, the Meridian Society has distributed more than $290,000 in awards to more than 100 projects. “Growing up in Edwardsville, I can remember the many school field trips I took

operatic experience for elementary school ages, which very well may be their first interaction with classical music. “The arts are crucial tools for building team work, establishing a vocabulary through which to express oneself, and for teaching the ever-important skill of empathy,” Hopkins said. “Opening the door to creativity enables students to consider the human condition through the stories told

EDWARDSVILLE — The city’s restaurant options are many — making the choice of where to go to dinner hard. But, that’s a good thing. It could be the other way around. One tried-and-true place that has never disappointed is 54th Street. It bills itself as a casual, neighborhood grill and bar, and it does have that kind of vibe to a certain extent, though it’s

a little more upscale. But, it’s definitely comfortable and relaxed, and a place you could take your family — young and old. I stopped by with a couple of my family members one Sunday, about mid-afternoon. We hadn’t had lunch. We were eating so late, we probably wouldn’t really have dinner, so this was one of those “eat up, because this may be your only meal of the day” kind of things. The menu is large — almost overwhelming because there are so many choices. Our wait-

ress was kind enough to spend quite a bit of time pointing out various items and telling us what she knew about them, and what her own experience had been with various dishes, which we really appreciated. She even sat down beside me. To start, I ordered the guacamole and chips, which were really good. The guac was creamy and obviously fresh-made. The chips were fresh and crisp. Other starters or “munchies” as 54th calls them, include chicken quesadilla, fried chicken fingers basket, fried pickles, tater kegs (jumbo, stuffed tater tots) and Bavarian pretzels. There’s also the made-from-scratch Gringo dip and chips that the restaurant is kind of known for, ‘shrooms (fresh, battered mushroom caps filled with herb and garlic cream cheese), tequila wrappers, sha-bang shrimp and calamari. I thought about getting one of 54th’s “chopped and tossed” salads — buffalo chicken salad, California bleu chicken salad (without the bleu) or summer chicken salad. But, I was really hungry. Though later, I saw a couple of these salads being served to others and they were big! I’m sure they would have filled me up. Instead, I chose the prime rib French dip for my main course. It was a little unreal because it was so good. I’m craving it as I write this down. The ultra-premium sandwich started with Angus beef ribeye, shaved paper thin, cooked medium and placed on a toasted French baguette. It was served with au jus and horseradish sauce. The bread was great — very flaky and soft — which provided the frame for the tasty, cooked-just-right prime rib inside. This was one of the best sandwiches I’ve eaten in a really long time. I had the vegetable medley on the side, and that was filled with my kind of vegetables. No broccoli! Asparagus, red peppers, mushroom and squash — all my favorites — grilled and lightly seasoned. That was perfection. My daughter tried the all-American burger with thick-cut applewood-smoked bacon and garlic aioli. She said it was perfectly cooked, and the flavor of the hamburger was very good. So then, my husband went out on a limb and tried the Havana club, with smoked turkey and pulled pork with Swiss cheese, dill pickles, garlic aioli and Cuban mustard on a French baguette. They prepared the meal for 26 people, and had it set up buffet style so you could pick and choose said “Cuban” ingredients as you saw fit (with their guidance and recommendations). It was a big hit, and it must have stuck with my husband. He ordered it. He tried it. He liked it. There are many other choices on the menu if none of these are appealing. The Mexican kitchen has several choices on its own, like a sizzling fajita skillet and Pacific fish taco platter. Along with our sandwich choices, there are a dozen more selections, including several versions of Philly cheesesteaks, wraps and clubs — even a gyro. There are several styles
of burgers, seafood, soups, pasta dishes and Southern favorites, like fried chicken, biscuits and baby back ribs. Now, think steaks! Ribeye, blackened ribeye, filet mignon! A special lunch menu, several desserts and a “street kids” section ensures there is something to make everyone happy. There’s even a gluten-awareness and vegetarian menu with many choices. And, I think the atmosphere is kind of fun. Not “bar-ish,” but not stuffy restaurant-ish, either, though the food tasted as good as many a stuffier establishment I’ve been to.
