Artist Wendy DeBrock’s dedication runs deep not only to her work, but also to her new hometown, where she moved this summer, bringing her aesthetic with her. “I specialize in hand painting whatever I can get my hands on,” said DeBrock, who worked with 90 artists in her former art gallery in Geneseo, near the Quad Cities in Henry County, Illinois. DeBrock studied business administration in college but her heart is in art. She started making her own clothes at age 9 and painting as a teenager. Growing up in Arizona, DeBrock’s colorful, fluid, detailed art reflects the Southwest, but now she creates Elsah-influenced art, as well. DeBrock’s body of work includes custom pieces and several completed commis-

sioned works. “Creating is my true joy in life, that’s what keeps me doing this,” she said. DeBrock’s artwork for sale includes hand-painted stemwear, wine glasses, Cuppa Joe mugs, Elsah-inspired coffee mugs, textile designs of repurposed clothing for truly one-of-a-kind handbags and small furniture accent pieces. “I work with a lot of upcycled and repurposed materials,” she noted. Lately, she’s particularly inspired by her new home. She painted a singular piece from a six-pane window out of one of Elsah’s oldest houses. DeBrock, who, along with her husband, Ron, relocated to Elsah last June, when he accepted the managing editor position for The Telegraph, in Alton. They live in the Mill Street district, one of three distinct historic districts, where Sisters of Elsah Art Studio and Gallery also is located next door to the couple’s residential house, in the village that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Wendy DeBrock named her studio for the pair of structures. “When we first looked at the two houses
together, we thought they were ‘twins,” she explained. “But, not quite, so we called them ‘sisters.’” The village’s sense of peace and its calming effect that it had on her, instantly drew her in, she recalled. The whole of the Elsah Historic District is made up of 350 acres and includes 48 contributing buildings, which reflect the village’s period of growth in the 1850s, according to the National Registry. Founded in 1853, the town’s 1861 appearance is well-preserved, and three distinct districts of the whole — including Mill Street — have gone almost entirely unchanged since then. The historic commercial district on LaSalle Street, which extends three blocks inward from the Mississippi River, consists mainly of stone buildings; all but one of its pre-1861 buildings, including those of all four of the village’s historic taverns, still stand. DeBrock donated work to the village of Elsah for its two map kiosks on either side of the Elsah Historic District. The hand-painted easy-to-follow maps notate highlights throughout the town, including some of the historic sites mentioned in the

As before, in her former hometown, DeBrock networks with several other artistic, entrepreneurial sorts in Elsah, to form a tight-knit group working together for the greater good of the village. Their efforts are especially dedicated to showing what the village has to offer visitors, beyond its bucolic beauty. Within six months of moving to the village, DeBrock created the Facebook page Elsah - A Step Back in Time - Village in Illinois, making it easy to discover different artisans, events and development. ‘The Current War: Director’s Cut’ a tidy drama of complicated history

“The Current War: Director’s Cut” is essentially a tidy drama about corporate competition, but comes alive, thanks to its talented ensemble cast, who each chew the scenery well in their period-appropriate costuming. The story behind why only the director’s cut version of the film is now in theaters is even more interesting. The movie’s director, Alfonso GomezRejon, discovered that executive producer Martin Scorsese’s approval of the film’s final cut, allowed a release of the Weinstein Co. production, though it was shelved in 2017, following fallout from sex abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein. By cutting 10 minutes and tagging “The Current War” as a director’s cut, the movie saw the light of day. “The Current War: Director’s Cut” might also be the first “gateway” movie of this year’s “prestige picture” season as the Hollywood blockbuster season falls off. This film examines the late 1880s - early 1890s’ “war of the currents,” between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, as a series of events surrounding the introduction of competing electric power transmission sys-
tems. Already well known, Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) leads the charge with his current concept of direct current and the invention of an efficient incandescent lamp, both conceived at his West Orange laboratory in Lower Manhattan. Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), one of 14 rivals and a focused entrepreneur who prefers the opposite — alternating current (AC), which he begins modeling from his Massachusetts-based home in Buffalo, New York. The inventors match wits, as well as marketing ploys, as the duo brings their ideas to the masses, installing dynamos and power hubs in as many towns as they can. Yet, covertly, Edison became associated with the electric chair because of secretly financing it for use in New York prisons, to prove AC current was deadly. The same model that Edison was associated with was used to execute William Kemmler (Conor MacNeill) in 1890. But, Kemmler’s lawyers filed a lawsuit appealing his sentence by execution, citing cruel and unusual punishment. His lawyers lost and Kemmler’s execution took two attempts before he was declared dead, causing fallout for Edison. In the meantime, Westinghouse and Edison go at it in the press and at the drawing board, while their engineers maniacally work to meet a collective goal — to illuminate the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, a world’s fair in Chicago.
Throughout, both employ maverick inventor Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), whose presence in the narrative is both fun and pesky. He’s really tacked on in most cases. So, who won the current war? AC survives to this day. Edison got the contract at the World’s Fair, but J.P. Morgan bought him out and used the company as the basis for form-
ing General Electric. The Wizard of Menlo Park went on to his next ambition — thankfully — patenting kinetoscope, which enabled motion picture. “The Current War: Director’s Cut” runs 102 minutes and is rated PG-13 for some disturbing/ violent images, and thematic elements. I give this film two and a half stars out of four.

‘Finding Chika’ is bittersweet memoir about family By Rasha Madkour Associated Press The author of “Tuesdays with Morrie” has a new memoir in which he again shares lessons learned from someone dear to him who dies. This time, though, instead of an old professor, his teacher is a young girl from the orphanage he runs in Haiti. It is not a spoiler to reveal that Chika dies. In a rawness that pervades “Finding Chika,” Mitch Albom breaks the heartrending news on the very first page. “Her absence left us without breath, or sleep, or appetite, and my wife and I stared straight ahead for long stretches until someone spoke to snap us out of it,” Albom writes. His reflections on Chika’s life and how she came to live with them in America as they sought treatment for her brain tumor are punctuated by accounts of Chika’s post-mortem “visits” to him as he writes this book in his home office.
“Chika never stays for long. She first appeared eight months after she died, the morning of my father’s funeral,” Albom explains. “I said her name in disbelief — ‘Chika?’ — and she turned, so I knew she could hear me. I spoke quickly, believing this was a dream and she would vanish at any moment. That was then. Lately, when she appears, I say, ‘Good morning, beautiful girl,’ and she says, ‘Good morning, Mr. Mitch’ ... You can get used to everything in life, I suppose. Even this.” Albom and his wife had no children of their own, a circumstance for which he blames himself. “I thought starting a family was like a new carpet I could store in a closet and unroll when I was ready,” he tells Chika during one of her appearances. By the time they tried, years of attempts failed and ultimately the couple settled into the roles of aunt and uncle. “It is all right not to have children if you don’t want them, Chika, but if you do, their absence can be aching.” It was both fortuitous and tragic, then,
that Albom and his wife became de facto parents to Chika the final years of her life, experiencing parenthood for the first time in late middle age. “I remember times you and I were walking and, without prompting, you reached out and took my hand, your little fingers sliding into mine. I would like to tell you how that felt, but it is too big for words,” Albom writes. “You put me on the other end of a magnifying glass or a toy telescope, and through those lenses, I could marvel at the world the way you did. You were an unfailing antidote to adult preoccupation.” Their desperate attempts to find a cure for a notoriously incurable condition, and the many interventions Chika endures, can be difficult to read at times. Despite knowing how it ends, a reader can’t help but hope the story turns out differently. Ultimately, “Finding Chika” is a touching rumination on the magic of children, the extraordinary lengths parents will go for them and the unlikely family that came together across continents.

Zac Posen, red carpet favorite, shuts down fashion label NEW YORK (AP) — Designer Zac Posen is shutting down his namesake label. Posen has been a red carpet favorite for close to two decades, known for glamorous, body-hugging gowns, often with long trains or big, flamboyant ruffles, for stars like Katie Holmes and Rihanna. An announcement from the label's owners, House of Z and Z Spoke, noted late Friday that the company could no longer continue operations. It had been in a sale process. Posen, 39, was considered a wunderkind of New York fashion when he launched his label in 2001. He also serves as creative director for the Brooks Brothers women's collection. "The management team ... worked extremely hard to navigate the increasingly challenging fashion and retail landscape," he said in a statement Friday. "We are disappointed that these efforts have not been successful and deeply saddened that the journey of nearly 20 years has come to an end. I am grateful to the team who lent their incomparable talent and commitment along the way. I remain incredibly proud of what we created and hopeful for the future." Among Posen's many prominent designs was a mermaid-like gown for Gwyneth Paltrow at the Oscars in 2007, an off-the-shoulder gown with brightly sequined skirt for Oprah Winfrey at the Oscars in 2011, and a fitted pink satin gown for Rihanna at the Diamond Ball in 2014. He swathed actress Claire Danes in pastel blue organza at the 2016 Met Gala, with a twist: her Cinderella-inspired dress was made with fiber optics, and it lit up in the dark. We all Scream for Ice Cream! By Vicki Bennington For The Edge
EDWARDSVILLE — A while back, I wrote about Edwardsville’s Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, which is co-branded and housed in the same building as Cold Stone Creamery. After sampling the Rocky Mountain chocolates, of course, we couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that the same place offered ice cream that sounded yummy, and we kept it on our list until we could make it back to have a cold kind of dessert. Contrary to what some believe, ice cream is not only for hot summer months. Ice cream tastes just as good when it’s “fall-ish” or, even, Vicki when it gets “winter-ish,” Bennington
and goes down to the single digits. So, off to the ice cream place we went. That’s what we always called it when I was a kid — “the ice cream place.” It didn’t matter what the true name of the establishment was, my siblings and I would ask our parents if we could go to the ice cream place. For whatever reason (I’m sure it was a good one), we were always supposed to choose a cone, small drink or small dish of something, not the large selections, like, banana splits or sundaes. Those were reserved for special occasions. I think that was a good lesson because now that I could choose the more extravagant, if I want to, I tend to go for a medium bowl of some scrumptious flavor offering. As I did at Cold Stone Creamery. I picked the “Founder’s Favorite,” which, as the name implies, is a favorite of company

founders Donald and Susan Sutherland. Sweet cream ice cream with pecans, brownie, fudge and caramel. OK, so how could it get any better than that? Or, if you‘re “allowed” to, order one of the “big ones” — or maybe it’s a special occasion — there are the “Banana Split Decision” and “Who You Callin’ Shortcake?” The secret of the great-tasting ice cream is that it is churned daily in each store and prepared with the mix-ins on a frozen granite stone. The result is delicious! The 25-year-old company has 1,500 locations around the world — so they must be doing something right! Cold Stone also has cakes, cakes and more cakes — birthday cakes, custom cakes, themed cakes, petite cakes, ice cream cupcakes topped
with fluffy white frosting or fudge ganache — and signature pies. I like the sound of the “There’s Chocolate on My Peanut Butter Pie.” Maybe you want to try something lighter. There are frozen yogurts with probiotics, and fresh and fruity sorbets. Mix-ins include fresh fruit and nuts, which makes for a healthy alternative. Fruit smoothies are another way to get your share of vitamins in something that tastes great. Try the pineapple blueberry or the strawberry mango! Oh, yeah, and the employees sing.
