“I opened the boutique as a way to start traveling

I take pride in pairing someone with an unlikely dress, coat or necklace, and hearing about the many compliments they received or watching their face light

up as they realize they have to have it!

“My prices are low because I want every woman to feel amazing, regardless of her financial status or means. Most dresses cost $20 or less,” she said. “The point of being here is to help make people feel better about themselves and I want that to be attainable for all people.”

Cassandra’s Closet carries designer brands, such as Coach, Tori Burch and Joe’s Jeans, but also resale boutique clothing and inexpensive national brands.

Celuch asks clients and customers for requests when buying in different cities for the boutique.

“I want to bring back what clients and customers want,” she said.

and sunglasses are all items, replenished often, priced from $5 to $25.

Cassandra’s Closet is open to the public from 10 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and exclusively to One Chair Hair clients the remainder of the week.

“Items are fashion forward and just plain different,” noted Celuch, who will be visiting West Hollywood, California, to do some more buying for the boutique at the beginning of December.

Celuch also is starting an apparel line for Cassandra’s Closet that’s not only a fashion project, but also a passion project.

The campaign hopes to spread an anti-bullying, ‘kindness is cool’ message with a unique vintage-style design, all having to do with anti-bullying and kindness,” Celuch explained.

“I have curated quite a collection of unique clothing and accessories in my travels over the years,” said Celuch, a 1998 Edwardsville High School graduate who grew up both in Holiday Shores, where her parents still live, and abroad when her parents helped start an English language school and church.

“I found a fantastic amount of beautiful items while visiting Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago, shopping at vintage stores and flea markets,” Celuch said.

“Although, I’ve always been attracted to the laid back style of the West Coast.”

When she was 7 years old, her parents, Terry and Jan Miller, relocated the family, including her two brothers and sister, to Saipan, in the Northern Mariana Islands, where her parents did their outreach work. During the few years she lived there,

“My family, that experience and others, such as living in diverse communities when I lived in L.A., has really given me my perspective and the concept for how I live my life,” she said.

This perspective informed her concept for One Chair Hair Salon and Boutique, a business model that was 10 years in the making.

“I wanted to be very deliberate,” said Celuch, who started the salon with a few more than 20 clients, but has grown exponentially since it opened less than two years ago in the same historic Main Street building as her husband Adam Celuch’s 40-year-old family owned marketing business, Inlandesign.

Celuch is in the process of adding two more One Chair Hair stylists, who will rent their own boutique salon space, com-

plete with a wash bowl, under their own entity.

Like Celuch’s space, One Chair Hair By Cassandra, theirs will be by the stylist’s own name.

“Everyone will be under the umbrella of One Chair Hair, but will run their own schedules and books,” she explained. “I would love to start an apprenticeship program or mentor program for new stylists, as well. I am looking for extremely motivated and inspired hairstylists to join One Chair Hair. A great fit would be entrepreneur-minded and talented individuals who would aspire to one day expand the brand of One Chair Hair and possibly own their own and operate their own branch.

“It’s amazing for me, too, to be able to be a working mom and still be able to do activities with my kids and spend time with them,” she said. “I am at such a great place in my life. It seems as though things are moving along in ways I never thought possible, dreams I’ve had for a very long time are coming to fruition. Big dreams for a small town girl!

“I am at a place where I can look back on all of the hard work and see the immeasurable growth my family has sustained over the last five years.”

With the trust Celuch has built with each client, she can authentically talk to them about their vision for themselves and

how they want to present themselves publicly.

Next month, while in Los Angeles for Cassandra’s Closet, Celuch will become certified in Buti yoga, which she plans to teach next year in Edwardsville. Buti is a dynamic form of yoga, she explained, fusing plyometrics (exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals) and tribal dance. In Indian Marathi, “Buti” literally means to cure something that is hidden;

by American definition, yoga is, in fact, “a system of exercises for mental and physical health,” Celuch explained.

All the while, the fulltime working mother of three daughters — Londyn, 12, Aspyn, 6, and Phoenyx, 4 — continues to donate her time and

talents to a slew of nonprofits and causes, both community-based and regional, such as the Friends of The Wildey’s annual The Art of Fashion fundraiser and, most recently, the second annual RE/MAX Alliance’s Night of Rock Stars. Bring the whole gang!

EDWARDSVILLE — Wang Gang Asian Eats will fool you from the outside storefront entrance. It looks like a nice establishment, albeit small, in the back corner of the University Pointe II mall on Edwardsville’s Century Drive.

But, once inside, you’ll find that the Asian fusion restaurant is not small at all. In fact, I was very surprised to see multiple dining rooms and a large wraparound bar. There’s even a small area out front Vicki Bennington with a couple of tables where patrons can sit when the weather is nice.

The casual, contemporary upscale Wang Gang offers a blend of Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese cuisine — thus, the Asian fusion.

It was an appetizer-kind of afternoon for me and my gang, so we stopped by to see what Pan-Asian is all about.

The signature crab rangoon is hand rolled, in house, with real lump crab meat, bell peppers, scallions and ginger, served with a house-made soy mustard sauce. This is one of my favorites.

rice noodles, mint, Thai basil, cilantro and lettuce, all wrapped up in rice paper and served with a Vietnamese dipping sauce.

Our third choice was potstickers, made with succulent pork, seared hibachi style.

These are good, but I like the crunch of the two other apps better.

And, if you aren’t feeling really hungry, but want to whet your appetite, you can start with a salad, like, the salmon salad — four ounces of salmon, lettuce, cilantro, carrots, bell peppers, red onions and sesame seeds, dressed with honey oil sesame vinaigrette (Wow!) or try one of the soups, such as signature Wang Gang laksa, with subtle textures of basil, cilantro and mint among rice noodles, chicken, lemon and toasted chili pods (Sounds comforting!).

Fried rice offerings look delicious and generous, with three or four different choices to make it your own. Noodle dishes, like, lo mein, bestselling drunken noodles and pad thai are some of the house favorites.

There are stir fries aplenty: sweet and sour, Mongolian beef, asparagus stir fry (this one’s different), kung pao, moo goo gai pan, sesame and Wang Gang curry — green or red.

Burgers, with choices, like, Burmese or Korean chicken, are different, which I’ve personally never seen on a menu, but the guy next to me was enjoying his Burmese.

The Thai tacos, served with a side salad, are sure to offer the true Pan-Asian experience. Poke bowls, egg foo young, sirloin steaks, crab-topped salmon and several dessert selections are also hot commodities.

“Pick-three” lunch combos include a drink and two food choices. Brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday, offering items such as breakfast burrito, Freddy Jo sandwich, biscuits and sausage gravy, omelets, pancakes, breakfast pad thai, smoked salmon eggs benedict and “Bloody Mary-Land,” garnished with a jumbo Alaskan crab claw!

The Wang Gang happy hour from 3 - 5 p.m. involves half-price alcohol and many food items seven days a week!

AP source: CBS to air Champions League in US starting in ‘21

Champions League broadcasts in the U.S. will move from Turner to CBS beginning with the 2021-22 season, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Friday because the agreement for U.S. English-language rights had not been announced by UEFA, European soccer’s governing body. The three-year deal will begin in August 2021.

Turner is in its second season airing the Champions League on TNT, but most of the matches through the round of 16 are on Bleacher Report’s streaming package.

Univision will retain the U.S. rights for Spanish-language broadcasts. CBS and Univision will pay $140 million a season, an increase from the $100 million in the current Turner/Univision deal.

This is the first major soccer property that

CBS has landed. The Premier League is on NBC while Fox has rights to FIFA events, including the men’s and women’s World Cups. Fox and ESPN share rights to Major League Soccer and the U.S. national teams.

Sunday’s MLS Cup final between Toronto and Seattle will air on ABC for the first time since 2008.

CBS will also air games on its cable sports channel and its CBS All Access streaming service.

The Champions League final will return to network television under the deal. Fox held the U.S. English-language rights from 2010-18 before losing them to Turner. ESPN was the first to bring Champions League matches to the U.S., airing them from 1995-2009.

Last season’s final between Liverpool and Tottenham averaged 1,508,000 viewers on TNT, down from 2,004,000 that watched the 2018 final on Fox. Sports Business Journal was the first to report on CBS acquiring the rights.

‘Motherless Brooklyn’ film noir elements heavily sanitized

The road to the multiplex for “Motherless Brooklyn” took 20 years. It was Edward Norton’s passion project, based on Jonathan Lethem’s 1999 novel of the same name that Norton optioned following his Oscar-nominated breakthrough in “American History X.” When a journey is that long, you can imagine how it begins to meander down side streets. I have selective criticism toward “Motherless Brooklyn.” There are many things about this movie to love, like, its costumes, photography and musical score. But, there’s also the monotonous pacing of its mid-point and the overly-complicated plot that hearkens to films such as “The Untouchables” and “Chinatown,” but with three times as many characters.

The famously touchy Norton is a true quadruple threat in this movie as lead star, writer, director and producer. His greatest role was in casting many fine supporting stars that pepper the 1957

New York City-set film noir storyline.

Norton’s Lionel Essrog is a private detective who works for Frank Minna (Bruce Willis), a chiding father figure who rescued Essrog and his three fellow detectives (Dallas Roberts, Bobby Cannavale and Ethan Suplee) from a terrible orphanage situation years before the plot of the movie actually begins and after Minna served on the Guadalcanal campaign. Essrog also suffers from Tourette syndrome and his sleuthing is hampered by a series of violent tics that include streams of profanity and gibberish, which he tries to cough away into his sleeve, and numerous obsessive-compulsive tendencies that manifest by tapping and touching people on their right shoulders. But, he also has a photographic memory.

“Motherless Brooklyn” centers on the trail that Essrog follows while investigating Minna’s murder, which stems from a secret case he’d last worked.

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, November 14, 2019 • 13 (Cherry Jones) fighting gentrification and a plan pushed by crooked city commissioner Moses Randolph (Alec Baldwin) to turn a bunch of working-class neighborhoods into a route for a major highway and urban development corridor. During Essrog’s investigation, he keeps running into Paul Randolph (Willem Dafoe), an enigmatic fellow who turns out to be Moses’ brother and seems alternately helpful and thwarting.

I have to be honest with you that this movie’s film noir elements, while something I cherish and

applaud, are heavily sanitized. I was alternately confused by the twisty narrative and some of the time-sucking asides, like, every scene with Minna’s hardly-grieving widow (Leslie Mann).

Though, for every eye roll I had during the drudgery, there are some moments, such as a slow dance between Rose and Essrog that had me swooning. Their romance is so secondary to the action that it barely registers until you realize how deep they are into it.

To be blunt, this movie is not very good, but I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t

worth seeing. Beyond Rose and Essrog’s eyes for each other, Baldwin nails the role of a remorseless thug — it’s a typical Baldwin role. “Motherless Brooklyn” is Norton’s film all across the board, but a final verbal sparring between Essrog and Moses Randolph, at the end, is pretty solid acting by two professionals.

“Motherless Brooklyn” runs 144 minutes and is rated R for language throughout including some sexual references, brief drug use, and violence. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Winfrey picks ‘Olive, Again’ for her next book club read

NEW YORK — Author Elizabeth Strout, whose “Olive, Again” is Oprah Winfrey’s latest book club pick, has a pretty good idea about how the plainspoken Olive Kitteridge would have responded.

“Olive would say, ‘Godfrey Mighty!’” Strout told The Associated Press in a recent email. “But even Olive would be impressed with Oprah onboard with her story.

Olive — who would not admit to it publicly — would be really pleased that Oprah finds her life so worthy of respect.”

“Ah, Olive. She teaches us so much about loneliness, judgment, aging, and loss. And empathy, too,” Winfrey said in a statement Thursday. “I’m in awe of Strout’s ability to convey so much in so few words.”

“Olive Kitteridge” is a series of connected stories based in Crosby, Maine. The book sold more than 1 million copies and was adapted into an Emmy-winning HBO miniseries starring Frances McDormand as the title character. “Olive, Again” is also a book of stories, following Kitteridge through her courtship with fellow widower

Jack Kennison and her tense relationship with her son, Christopher.

“I think people care about Olive because she is enormously complicated,” Strout told the AP. “And frankly, most of us are. We try and keep these different aspects of ourselves damped down, but Olive is so out there — there are many pieces of her that people can relate to.”

Dray Wimberly, of Granite City Dray has loved the St. Louis Blues since she was a kid in the early 1990s.

“I watched with my dad,” Wimberly recalled.

“We didn’t have a lot of money, but my dad would always take me to a Blues game for my birthday and I got to be in the Kids Blue Note Club.

“I got super nostalgic during the Stanley Cup finals,” she said.

“We are looking forward to flying out to Las Vegas in January to watch a Blues road game,” Tiffany Perry told The Edge.

She fell hard and fast when she met Matt Perry in 2016. Perry, originally from the Chicagoland area, moved to Carlinville in 2005.

“He started going to Blues games for fun and ended up falling in love with the team,” Tiffany Perry recalled. “As a native St. Louisan, I have always liked our home teams — I’m a huge Cardinals fan since birth — but had never been to a Blues game!

“Matt took me as one of our first dates and I fell in love!” she exclaimed. “Now, we are happily married with a 16-year-old son, Logan, and we share a 1-year old son, Levi. They both love going to games. Levi attended his first at just 3 weeks old and he got to meet Louie!

“We are now season ticket holders and a lot of our free time is devoted to the St. Louis Blues.”
