Everyone loves a parade — especially Edwardsville’s Halloween Parade

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — Music, always a big part of the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon Chamber of Commerce’s annual Halloween Parade, takes on even greater

significance this year with the theme of “Wonderful World of Music.” “We’re so excited about this year’s theme,” said Ed/Glen chamber’s Katie Haas, membership director. “The Wonderful World of Music lends itself for people to get creative. It can go so many

different directions. “We’ve used music in the past, but being the overall theme this year is an extra level of celebration that people can experience.” Use of theme is a criteria in float judging, which will take place at the Chamber

Grandstand, outside of Mojo’s Music, 144 N. Main St. As the parade processes, judges will determine first, second and third place in five categories; a grand prize winner will be chosen by the judges from see PARADE, Page 4

the first-prize winners of those categories, for a total of 15 awards of either a plaque or cash. Then, via the Ed/Glen Chamber’s Facebook page, beginning within days of the parade, there will be a fan-favorite prize awarded to one of the 15 winning entries

that were chosen by the judges. “The public gets to vote from the top fifteen entries, and that business or organization wins the Fan Favorite recognition,” Haas explained. “This happens in the days after the parade, and it gives viewers a way to relive the parade. It’s kind of fun seeing the photos not only to appreciate the workmanship that goes into the floats, but also because some people have said, ‘I missed that one dur-

ing the parade.’” Adults and children also are encouraged and welcome to wear costumes to the parade. “That would be fantastic!” Haas exclaimed. Partnering with the city of Edwardsville, the Ed/Glen chamber takes the lead in registering parade entries, organizing bands, coordinating volunteers, etc., for the nearly 100-year-old Halloween parade. The city leads the community safety aspect of the event. The event has developed into a community wide tradition, in conjunction with trick-or-treating on Downtown’s Main Street, sponsored by the Edwardsville Parks and Recreation Department. “Businesses lining both sides of Main Street get really involved,” Haas noted. “Other sports or school groups get involved with selling pizza and chicken

sandwiches, getting there at 4 p.m. and staying until the parade crowds disperse.” Vendors get involved by obtaining permits through the city. The annual parade is a celebration of the businesses, nonprofit organizations and youth groups that serve and shape the community. A huge volunteer force, including the city, police department and local Rotarians, help make the parade possible, keep it moving to prevent lulls in its procession and activities, and work out the logistics. Halloween parade Oct. 31, kick off at 6:30 pm and start processing down the parade route. Bring the family and enjoy this Edwardsville tradition. CHILDREN’S HALLOWEEN COSTUME CONTEST, DOWNTOWN TRICK OR TREATING The Children’s Halloween Costume Contest and Downtown Trick or Treating takes place from 11 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at City Park, 101 S. Buchanan St., in Edwardsville. The Edwardsville Lions Club will begin costume judging at 12 p.m., with each child taking a turn on the City Park Bandstand stage. Participants will be grouped in categories by age: babies-3 years old, 4-6 years old, 7-9 years old and 10-12 years old. There will be a special category for group costumes. Costume contest entry is free but entries must be registered by a parent or guardian from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 26, at City Park Bandstand. The Edwardsville Parks Department, in cooperation with the Edwardsville Lions Club, is hosting the children’s costume contest. Prizes, donated by GCS Credit Union, will be awarded after each age category has been presented. Trick-or-treating on Main Street will immediately follow the costume contest. Participating Main Street merchants will be at their door offering candy to costumed children. This event is free of charge but parents must arrive at City Park no later than 11:30 a.m. to register for this event.

ORLANDO, Fla. — There are plenty of sunny days to sweep the clouds away where SeaWorld is opening its next theme park. O f f i c i a l s w i t h S e a Wo r l d Entertainment and Sesame Workshop announced Monday that they are opening the country's second Sesame Place park in San Diego in spring 2021. The first Sesame Place theme park opened almost 40 years ago outside Philadelphia. The announcement continues a pivot by Orlando-based SeaWorld away from live animal shows. The new 17-acre (6.5-hectare) Sesame Place will be located south of SeaWorld San Diego. The space is currently occupied by the water park, Aquatica San Diego, which will have its final season next year.

Monday's announcement is part of an expanding partnership between SeaWorld and Sesame Street, which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year. SeaWorld's Orlando park opened a Sesame Street section earlier this year. Officials wouldn't disclose the cost of the park. S t e v e Yo u n g w o o d , p re s i d e n t of media and education and chief operating officer of Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street, said the two brands have common objectives. "We want to engage and educate families. We mutually respect each side's expertise and we collaborate together to make it work," Youngwood said. SeaWorld announced the end of its breeding program in March 2016, after years of pressure from animal rights advocates and shifting public opinion about orcas being held in captivity. The protests intensified after the release of the 2013 documentary "Blackfish," which focused on the life of Tilikum, a killer whale responsible for killing a trainer when he dragged her into a pool in front of shocked visitors in 2010. The company in the past year, though, has seen a reversal of fortune. Attendance was up 8.6% during the 2018 fiscal year, as was revenue. For the first half of this year, attendance was up 1.7%. In the past year, SeaWorld also has been offering specialized services at its parks for visitors with autism, and Sesame Place San Diego will also offer those services. The San Diego park will be slightly larger than the Sesame Street park outside Philadelphia. Construction will start in Aquatica's offseason and resume after Aquatica closes for the season next year. The park's opening in San Diego will open the Sesame Street experience to the western U.S., as well as to visitors from south of the border, said Marilyn Hannes, president of SeaWorld San Diego. "I think we will pull a more international audience," Hannes said. Back to those sunny days sweeping the clouds away, per Sesame Street's theme song, it is sunny in San Diego more than two-thirds of the time, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Mark’s Appliance helps with ways to store wine, more By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com

EDWARDSVILLE — Barring a residential wine cellar, the addition of a wine cooler — with easier access at much less expense — gives a home bar, or even a kitchen, a design that makes for entertaining. For wine drinkers who want optimal taste from their vino, experts recommend serving wine varietals at optimal temperatures, which is where a wine cooler versus a beverage center makes a difference. Mark’s Appliance owner, Mark Bradley, admits he’s no wine expert but he does know the nuance between a wine cooler and a beverage center, also called beverage cooler, both of which he carries at Mark’s Appliance’s Edwardsville and Jerseyville showrooms. “When people go out and buy a beverage center, they need to be aware of the temperature range,” Bradley explained to Metro East House Hunters. “The most common seller is the beverage center because customers want versatility.” Yet, a wine cooler is set to a higher temperature range than a refrigerator or beverage cooler because wine should not be stored as cold as other beverages, he explained. On average a wine cooler will not offer temperatures below 46 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Wine Spectator, light dry

white wines, rosés and sparkling wines are best served at 40 degrees Fahrenheit to 50 degrees Fahrenheit; full-bodied white wines and light, fruity reds are best at 50 degrees Fahrenheit to 60 degrees Fahrenheit;

and, full-bodied red wines and ports are best at 60 degrees Fahrenheit to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Short exposure to extreme temperatures and to direct light can cause wine to age poorly.

Keep in mind that all types of under-counter refrigeration fall in one of three categories — under-counter beverage centers, wine coolers or refrigerators. All are built for different purposes. A wine cooler

and a beverage center are built similarly with temperature controls that, while they are accurate, do not have to be exact because these appliances are about the temperature in the bottle or can instead of

Keep safety in mind when decorating for the holidays

For The Edge

Decorations help make the holiday season a magical time of year. Stores are awash in color and twinkling lights, and similar imagery is on display in private homes. Designing holiday displays can be a great way for families to spend time together and kick off the celebration. In fact, according to Electrical Safety Foundation International, around 90 percent of Americans decorate their homes for the holidays. W h e n t r i m m i n g t h e t re e a n d decorating this holiday season, families must keep safety in mind. A little planning and some precautionary measures can ensure displays are enjoyed all season long. Travelers Insurance offers the following holiday decorating safety tips. • Do not overload outlets. Plan displays according to the number and location of available outlets.

interior temperature never changing. This keeps wine, soda and beer stable. It’s about the liquid temperature inside the container. Thus it’s not uncommon to have that temperature variance. A wine/beverage cooler has a wide temperature range and may be used for either wine or soft drinks, bottled water, etc., but if you want to store both in the same cooler, at the same time, typically the wine will be too cold and the other beverages too warm. But, some beverage coolers have dual temperature settings, which can be thermostatically controlled. Consider the following when purchasing a wine cooler: • How much wine do you plan to store? • Where do you plan to put a wine

• Never exceed the maximum number of light strands that can be attached together. • Use lights and products that have been tested for safety. Certification marks like UL, ETL and CSA are from nationally recognized laboratories. • LED lights should be used whenever possible. Such lights consume less energy and run cooler than other bulbs. • The ESFI says candles start almost 50 percent of all decoration fires. Minimize the risk by using candles only when they can be monitored. Artificial candles can be used in place of real candles. • Check for freshness in live trees. A fresh tree will last longer and is less of a fire hazard than an old tree. • Place Christmas trees at least three feet away from all heat sources, including fireplaces and heaters. • Use decorations that are noncombustible or made from flameresistant materials. • Pay attention to the age

recommendations of decorations to see if they can be used in homes with young children. Some items, however common, are choking or strangulation hazards. • Avoid putting small, “mouth-sized” decorations near the ground or on lower limbs of trees, where young children can easily reach them. • Exercise caution when hanging decorations at high heights. Make sure the ladder is secured and have a spotter who can hold the ladder and pass items up safely.

• Outdoor electric lights and decorations should be plugged into circuits protected by ground fault circuit interrupters, or GFCIs. • Exercise caution when decorating near power lines that extend to the house. • Keep hung stockings far away from open flames so they do not catch any errant embers. These are just a few suggestions for decorating a safely for the holiday season.

Mark’s Appliance Edwardsville Showroom, 6698 Center Grove Road, will hold a tent sale the same day. “Our mantra is ‘D.A.R.E to Compare, We’ll Beat Your Best Deal,’” Bradley said. “We don’t want price to be an objection from buying at Mark’s. The only way we stay in business is by having good people buy from us, so we must provide

great pricing with great service. “If someone calls or comes into our store and gives us the opportunity for their business, we must give them the best deal. We tell people if they’re out shopping and see something we are unaware of, to please let us know, we want their business and will do what it takes to earn it.” Bradley, of Edwardsville, worked for Maytag when he got out of college, which is how he got into the appliance business. Mark’s Appliance carries Maytag; Amana; Whirlpool; KitchenAid; Hotpoint; Haier; GE; GE Profile; GE Café; and, Beko, among others. “If they make it, and it’s not exclusive to a big box or other independent retailer, we can get it,” said Edwardsville store manager/sales specialist Abe Harper, who grew up in Troy, Illinois, and lives in Fairview Heights; Mark’s Appliance Edwardsville Showroom sales support also includes Brent Huskie, of Collinsville, and Jacob Faulkner, of Glen

Carbon. “Sometimes we have access to items the big box stores do not have,” Harper explained. “We do custom packages — customers can create a package, entire kitchens, piecemeal, and we can give better prices and discount the installation. We offer better value. Customers have one phone number to call, not an 800 number. If a dishwasher goes out, call us. You don’t have to go through a voicemail menu. Overall, the value customers get at Mark’s is better, you get more for your money.” Mark’s Appliance Service Center also is conveniently located in Edwardsville, at 218 First Ave. Mark’s Appliance Jerseyville Showroom is located at 1600 S. Things to consider before warming up next to your first fire this winter For The Edge

A warm fire can make even the coldest winter day more enjoyable. Fireplaces may not get much use in spring or summer, but come late fall and throughout the winter, the fireplace can be a great place for families to gather. Before fireplace season hits full swing, homeowners might want to brush up on a few fireplace facts so they can safely enjoy nights spent sitting by the crackling flames. The Chimney Safety Institute of America advises homeowners with

fireplaces to hire a CSIA-certified chimney sweep to clean their fireplaces. After a lengthly period of non-use, various issues could be affecting the chimney, many of which might not be noticeable to an untrained eye. Professional, certified chimney sweeps have extensive knowledge of fireplaces, making them valuable resources who can let homeowners know if any safety issues developed since fireplaces were last used. The National Protection Agency recommends that chimneys be swept at least once per year. A full inspection of the chimney might be in order as well. Chimney

service technicians will conduct thorough examinations of readily accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior and accessible portions of the appliance and the chimney connection. The CSIA recommends that homeowners who plan to use their chimneys as they have in the past request a Level 1 inspection, which will examine the soundness of the chimney structure and flue as well as the basic appliance installation and connections. Technicians also will verify if the chimney is free of obstruction and combustible deposits. Homeowners also should inspect their chimney dampers before lighting their first fires of the season. Dampers should open and close smoothly. If not, a service technician can help fix or replace the damper. Firewood is another thing homeowners must consider before lighting their first fires of the season. The CSIA says that well-seasoned firewood works best, noting that wood that is not well-seasoned will produce

more smoke than heat. In addition, the home improvement resource This Old House recommends using dense wood that’s been split and stored in a high and dry place for at least six months. Oak is an example of dense wood that, when stored properly, can make for an enjoyable fireplace experience. Avoid softwoods like pine. Pine can produce a lot of creosote, which is a byproduct of wood combustion. Creosote is highly flammable, and as it builds up in a chimney, the risk for a chimney fire increases. Choosing the right wood, making sure it’s well-seasoned and having a chimney professionally cleaned can reduce the risk of a creosote-related chimney fire. A Level 1 inspection should determine if there are potentially dangerous levels of creosote deposits in the chimney. Before nestling up to a fireplace this winter, homeowners should consider a host of factors and safety measures to ensure their fireplaces are safe and ready for the season ahead.

7 ways to make guests more comfortable when entertaining For The Edge Many people enjoy opening their homes to friends and family. Entertaining can include everything from backyard barbecues to hosting formal dinner parties to providing overnight accommodations. While each of those things is different, hosts always want to ensure their

guests are as comfortable as possible, regardless of which style of gathering they’re hosting. Hosts can use these seven strategies to help guests feel at home. 1. Consider the details. Does your guest like chocolate covered almonds? Does he or she prefer a certain genre of music? Take note of the specific details that make the guest tick, and then incorporate

them into your entertaining plans. 2. Ready the space. Not everyone has a full-fledged guest room, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a welcoming and private retreat for guests. Turn a home office into an overnight area with a pull-out couch or even a dressed-up air mattress with high-quality linens. 3. Anticipate guests’ needs. Think like a concierge when hosting at

home. Have extra toothbrushes, antiperspirant, mouthwash, and a phone charger at the ready. Is your guest a reader? Keep a few selections nearby or a book of puzzles so they can stay busy during their downtime. 4. Keep dietary needs in mind. Guests have different palates and preferences, but some may have serious food allergies as well. Ask in advance if any guests have food allergies so you can ensure that any meals served are not just delicious, but also safe and healthy. 5. Keep pets at bay. Guests may not be as enamored with pets as their hosts. If you know a guest has an allergy or an aversion to pets,

keep the animals away as much as possible. 6. Freshen the home. Take inventory of your home in its current state and make some minor improvements. Add some interior lighting, clean the bathrooms, create some extra seating, and freshen up with some flowers to make for a welcoming environment. 7. Prepare a special meal. Give guests a sensational meal they’re not likely to forget. This can mean indulging a little with sourced ingredients, home cooking and a good bottle of wine. Comfort should always be a priority when readying a home for guests.

New HBO series ‘Watchmen’ hopes to match original’s ambition

By MARK KENNEDY AP Entertainment Writer

NEW YORK — Damon Lindelof didn’t take lightly the challenge of adapting the most acclaimed graphic novel of all time. The “Lost” and “The Leftovers” co-creator was a fan of the revered “Watchmen” book ever since his father handed him the first few issues when he was 13 in the mid-1980s. So agreeing to spearhead HBO’s new adaptation didn’t come without a bout or two of nerves. “There was immense trepidation and it was never overcome,” he told The Associated Press. “Trepidation is actually our greatest asset.” Lindelof will see how he’s done when the first of his nine-episode “Watchmen” follow-up debuts Sunday and the fanboys and fangirls weigh in. They will find many things created in their honor. “The end result is something that is hopefully accessible to people who don’t have an intimate familiarity with ‘Watchmen,’ but there’s constant love letters and acknowledgments that we are building upon the

foundation of this masterpiece,” said Lindelof. The creators have managed to lure an eclectic list of actors, including Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Louis Gossett Jr., Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson and Don Johnson. It proved a formidable task to build on writer Alan Moore’s and illustrator Dave Gibbons’ dark superhero tale, which follows a group of masked vigilantes who uncover a vast conspiracy after one of their own is killed in an alternate-history America. Superheroes are banned and have gone underground.

Before they wrote a line of script for the new series, Lindelof and his team of 12 writers carefully plotted over 10 weeks what happened to that alternate world in the decades until 2019. “It’s a history that’s just adjacent to our own with some significant major aberrations,” he said. In the original series, America won the Vietnam War and turned that country into a state. President John F. Kennedy is still assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963, but Richard Nixon remained president until 1988 after successfully abolishing term limits.

Actor Robert Redford was running for president against Nixon. Lindelof and his writers took all that and expanded it to a new universe. The series begins with Redford as president, and adds Henry Louis Gates Jr. as Treasury secretary and John Grisham serving on the Supreme Court. The main plot is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where it’s hard to tell the bad guys from the good guys because police also wear masks. Some of the original characters have made the leap 30 years and some are brand-new. The internet isn’t a thing in this ver-

sion of 2019 — newspapers and radio are the main means of mass communication. “We treated the original 12 issues as canon, as an Old Testament, as it were,” Lindelof said. “The Old Testament has given us some clues as to what direction to head in but we also want to land in a place that’s a direct commentary on our time.” The original “Watchmen” was built around the dread of the Cold War and so the creators of the HBO series also looked for

Ali Wong’s Raunchy Humor Charms in ‘Dear Girls’

By MOLLY SPRAYGEN Associated Press

In comedian Ali Wong’s “Dear Girls,” Wong opens by declaring that she was nervous to write a book because she didn’t feel smart enough. She found her groove, she says, when she realized that she could embrace her vulgar and silly self and release any pressure to sound particularly intellectual or wise. And yet Wong proves herself to be as brilliant as ever, showcasing her unique ability to use jokes about things like poop and other bodily excretions to communicate relatable and important truths about everything from parenthood to marriage to marginalization. “Dear Girls” gives readers a glimpse into Wong’s life before and since her Netflix special, “Baby Cobra,” made her a household name. The book is structured as a series of letters to Wong’s two daughters, with whom she was famously pregnant in each of her first two Netflix specials. Wong dispenses advice to Mari and Nikki through exceedingly honest stories about her life (which she forbids them from reading until they are at least 21 years old). The book is laugh-out-

WATCHMEN continued from Page 24

a unifying theme. While they worked, the culture was wracked by images of white nationalists rallying in Charlottesville, Virginia, and black men being shot by police. “When we started talking about moving the story into 2019, we wanted to say, ‘What is the cultural anxiety that we are now facing?’ Obviously, there is danger out there in the world, but all around us was this idea of a reckoning with race in America,” Lindelof said. As a result, the new series paints a bleak portrait of race relations in America, with well-intentioned good guys fighting an endless wave of white supremacy. Its carefully crafted scripts explore vigilantism, torture and even eugenics. “It had to be bold and it had to take risks and it had to be surprising and it had to be a little bit unsafe,” Lindelof said. “And so if we were feeling unsafe writing it, that was sort of an essential emotional component of the storytelling.” The look of the show matches the mood, with a sense of dread punctuated by action sequences. Nicole Kassell, who directed the pilot and episodes two and eight, was led by Gibbons’ original vertical comic panes. “It was absolutely inspiring to look at the framing of the comic and knowing that if I could pay homage to that as often as possible, it would really delight the fans,” she said. There are so-called Easter eggs

throughout. In one scene, King’s character is in a kitchen and the script calls for her to crack several eggs in a bowl and, for a millisecond, make a smile from the yolks. That’s a nod to an iconic image from the comic — the yellow smiley face. But Kassell took it further, choosing clear bowls so she could film above and below, adding a whisk between two bowls to create an owl face (also a key motif of the books) and then adding a dash of red — recreating the blood-splattered smiley face image that graced the cover of the first issue. The original comics also were bursting with social and historical references, with plenty of varied musical allusions. Lindelof and his team have matched that ambition, with references to everything from Greek tragedies to Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals. The soundtrack includes the Bee Gees, Beastie Boys, Eartha Kitt, Devo and Tchaikovsky. It’s a challenging work and complex to watch. No wonder adapting “Watchmen” well has long eluded Hollywood. But Lindelof and his team have avoided one pitfall of director Zack Snyder’s “Watchmen” movie of a decade ago — being too reverential to the source material. This new series isn’t scared by its legacy. “There is something almost freeing about saying, ‘This is supposed to be impossible. If we attempt this dive and we end up breaking our neck or, halfway down, we realize there’s no water in the pool, that’s sort of what everybody expected from us anyway,’” he said. “That became liberating.”

loud funny, each chapter filled with that signature Ali Wong charm. Wong is self-assured and raunchy, yet at the same time vulnerable and sentimental. There is so much love in these pages between Wong and her family. She writes beautifully about her parents, siblings,

daughters and husband. She also writes about bombing at tiny comedy clubs, being broke in New York City, dating the wrong men and ultimately, “trapping” her husband. “Dear Girls” is a fun, easy read and will surely charm fans of Wong’s comedy.

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Mom Would Be Proud of Me!

used them as an ingredient in my mom’s recipe for what she always called “chili sauce.” To me, it is actually a sweet salsa, but a sweet concoction by any other name is still a sweet concoction, so you can call it whatever you want. For years, my mom would make it every August, and family members would scramble to get their designated number of jars. After my mom died in 2017, I had a stack of her recipes and found the recipe that we all craved, but none had ventured to make. We always had our horded jars, and when we went to mom’s house, she would serve it — primarily, spooned over cream cheese with crackers for dipping. Mm-hmm. I’ve also seen her use it as a sort of chutney with meats. It would be good on top of a nice piece of salmon. This year, I had lots of tomatoes. When I decided to give canning a try, I visited the Alton Farmers’ & Artisans’ Market and purchased fresh onions and green peppers for my recipe. The peeling and chopping was the brutal part. I enlisted my husband to help me, who kindly peeled the tomatoes. People have told me I should have blanched them in the oven, but my mom never did, and we were trying to emulate her method. She always said that

A fresh tomato out of the garden — preferably never refrigerated — is, perhaps, my favorite food. But, alas, in the Midwest, we wait and wait for that first tomato to ripen (my mom used to say you were lucky if you had tomatoes by the Fourth of July), then have an overabundance, when you can’t eat them fast enough before they spoil, especially if you don’t like the texture change that occurs with refrigeration. But, hark! If you are courageous and ambitious enough, you can put them to another use. You could try simply canning tomatoes, but of course, that’s not the same as a nice sliced, room-temperVicki ature tomato, which has just Bennington the right crispness. Instead, I

On the Edge of the Weekend • Thursday, October 24, 2019 • 27 peeling and chopping the vegetables made her tired, and she was definitely right. But, turn on some music, talk with your “helper,” and it becomes a little more tolerable. Now, when you read this recipe, don’t write to me and ask how I figured out how much “a peck” of tomatoes was, because I don’t know. We asked people at the farmers’ market, we googled it and got several (non-definitive) answers, and, in the end, we kind of guessed with 10 medium-sized tomatoes. Please DO write to me if you have an exact way of knowing what one peck translates to in tomatoes. Preparing Canning Jars Place a canning rack in the bottom of a large pot (tall enough that you can totally submerge your jars when the lids are on). Place jars on the rack allowing water to fill the jars until covered by one inch. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Keep them in the water until ready to fill to prevent jar breakage due to temperature change. Wash lids and bands and set aside. Now, it’s time to make our salsa. Mom’s Chili (sweet salsa) Sauce 1 peck of tomatoes, chopped 6 onions, medium, chopped 4 green peppers, chopped 1 cup white vinegar 3 cups sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 teaspoon salt Put first three ingredients in pot and cook

for one hour (bring to boil, then simmer). Add vinegar, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Cover and cook for 1 hour until it thickens. Now you need to fill the jars, then boil and seal them. That seemed so scary to me. What if it didn’t work? Was there a way of checking the seal afterward besides pulling so hard that I would break the seal, if there was one? In the end, I simply followed the directions, and it worked. I could actually tell that they were sealed because there was a slight depression in the center of the lid. And since then, as I’ve opened new jars, I have to pry the lids off, which is a good thing. Filling and Processing Pick up each jar with a jar lifter. Pour the hot water out of jar and back into pan. Set on a towel on the counter. Use a ladle and funnel to fill the jar with the salsa, leaving about 1/4-inch of empty space (headspace). Wipe the rim to remove any splashes. Center the lid and twist on band until fingertip tight. Don’t leave it too loose or it can pop off during processing (it happened with one of mine), but not too tight either. After filling all of the jars that will fit into your pan, add more water if needed, so that water is still about one inch above the jar. I boiled mine with the lid on the pot for 20 minutes. Turn off heat, remove pot lid and let stand for about five minutes. Remove jars from pot with jar lifter and sit on towel or cutting

board. Don’t sit them too close together. Let cool. Then wipe down with a damp cloth and dry. Then store in cabinet or distribute to friends and neighbors. Technically, the sealed jars would be good for up to 18 months, but this salsa won’t last that long — trust me. Once you pop the seal, store in refrigerator. The most important thing is that everyone who has tried the salsa, and had also tried my

mom’s previously, said they taste the same. I did good! I think my mom would definitely be proud of me, and I was actually kind of proud of myself. Well … I was really proud of myself. I’m going to can more things now. Next, I think I will go with jelly. I don’t think I’m quite brave enough to try mom’s pickles yet. Maybe someday.

Sweet salsa over cream cheese and served with Ritz crackers or Wheat Thins makes for a perfect appetizer. (Vicki Bennington | For The Edge)

Review: Neil Young back in his ragged glory with ‘Colorado’

By SCOTT BAUER Associated Press Neil Young is back with his old band Crazy Horse in all their ragged glory with “Colorado,” a beautiful, rambling, chaotic howl against climate change, division and hate. It’s one of Young’s best record in years, reminiscent of 1989’s triumphant “Ragged Glory,” and his first with Crazy Horse since 2012. Young, an old man showing no signs of slowing down at 73, cranks up both his rage and tenderness as only he can with the latest incarnation of Crazy Horse behind him. The band members have spent 50 years recording on and off with Young. The latest version features longtime Bruce Springsteen guitarist Nils Lofgren, who replaces retired 70-year-old Frank “Poncho” Sampedro. But just like Young, Crazy Horse seems to defy the passing of time with the energy and emotion they bring to “Colorado.” That passion is on full display on “Mountaintop,” a companion documentary that captured the recording session high in the Rockies as Young and Crazy Horse suck on oxygen and work out the new songs. The sweetly melodic threeminute opening track “Think of Me” could easily fit on Young’s 1992 “Harvest Moon.” But in a sharp left turn, Young follows it up with a shambolic 13-minute jam — “She Showed Me Love” — with echoes of earlier Crazy Horse adventures like 1969’s “Down by the River.” As he has for much of the past decade, Young focuses his rage on climate change, railing about “old white guys trying to kill Mother Nature.” On the standout “Rainbow of Colors,” Young offers some hope amid the despair. “There’s a rainbow of colors/In the old USA,” Young croons. “No one’s gonna whitewash those colors away.” Yo u n g ’ s n e v e r o n e t o whitewash anything, as he proves magnificently once again on “Colorado.”

‘Judy’ hammy, but musical numbers steal show

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist For The Edge

I’d really hoped that the two weeks I waited to see “Judy,” a dramatic biopic about the life of singer and actress Judy Garland, were going to be worth it. They weren’t. “Judy” is dry and disappointing and wastes a solid performance by Renée Zellweger in the title role. It’s a little hammy in the way a Lifetime Network movie is. The trappings look like a Hollywood affair, but the varnish is barely skin deep if you look too closely. There wasn’t nearly enough singing in a movie about this particular diva, but the few numbers steal the show and save it from being a total waste. I didn’t realize how telling this previous sentence was about the life of the singer herself until I’d written it. For all the good things we remember, “Judy” goes out of its way to show the downfall of the consummate entertainer. “Judy” is bookended by snippets from the set of “The Wizard of Oz,” in which a young Garland (Darci Shaw) is being chastised by Louis B. Mayer (Richard Cordery) for daring to want to do the things girls her age should be doing, like, swimming, eating hamburgers, and not working 18-hour days and doing press junkets

with Mickey Rooney. There are periodic flashbacks to these same cajoling, almost tyrannical scenes as the action in the main part of the story wavers. What these flashbacks serve to tell us is that Garland had a hard life in showbiz, even if it was painted with a pretty set of brushstrokes and legendary status afterward. Her lifetime use of diet pills to control her weight and sleeping pills to get her off the high in time to sleep at night, left Garland a wreck for most of her adult life. She was also a heavy smoker and drinker and these vices are all prominently displayed in the movie, which is based on the five-week string of engagements she gave at London’s Talk of the Town, a supper club and stage show venue, that was sold out every night. It was her last major career undertaking. With no resources left to stave off her ex-husband’s fight to gain custody of their children (including “Game of Thrones’” Bella Ramsey as Lorna Luft), Garland takes the gig in Great Britain. By this point, early 1969, her career is in the toilet, her health is failing, and she’s down to trading on the only thing that’s gotten her this far: showmanship. Talk of the Town is a long shot and her only one. She’s helped along by booker Bernard Delfont (Michael Gambon) and personal assistant

This Sept. 10, 2019 file photo shows actress Renee Zellweger at the premiere of "Judy" during the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto. Zellweger stars as Judy Garland in the biopic in theaters this Friday. (Tijana Martin/The Canadian Press via AP)

Rosalyn Wilder (Jessie Buckley), but they’re both in for more than which they bargained. Wilder literally carries Garland through some of the times when barbiturates, grief and vodka allow her self-recriminations to cripple her chances at taking the stage. Zellweger is tremendous in the role, particularly in the showy parts as Garland, when she ranges between rage on the bathroom floor to belting out “The Trolley Song” on stage. The stodgy, dramatic filler is where the whole thing fails to come together. “Judy” ends with Garland’s fifth husband (Finn Wittrock) abandoning her after revealing several failed business ventures he tried to capitalize

on with her fame. She died roughly six months after the booking at Talk of the Town ended and gave only one additional performance after that before a drug overdose killed her at age 47. Further, “The Wizard of Oz” continues to be one of the touchstone and indelible American family films of all time. I took my oldest niece to see it on the big screen last year, doing my part to preserve that very same idea. Somewhere over the rainbow a lady is smiling at that idea. “Judy” runs 118 minutes and is rated PG-13 for substance abuse, thematic content, some strong language, and smoking. I give this film one and a half stars out of four.

Genre-bending bio of Thomas Edison is highly illuminating By LEE MITGANG Associated Press The late Edmund Morris, a Pulitzer Prizewinning biographer known for his willingness to brush aside the norms of his genre if it suited his narrative ends, does it again in his final book: a fresh look at Thomas Alva Edison, perhaps America’s most prolific and consequential inventor. Morris, who died in May at age 78, opens “Edison” conventionally enough with a prologue highlighting the inventor’s worldchanging accomplishments. Starting in his teens as a precocious telegraph operator, the man known as “the Wizard of Menlo Park” invented and patented nearly 1,100 machines, systems and electrical devices until his death in 1931 at the age of 84. Beginning with lower Manhattan in 1882, Edison lit up entire cities using long-burning incandescent lightbulbs and electrical dynamos. He invented the phonograph and a host of other sound devices that brought recorded voices and music into living rooms and cinemas. Besides those signature accomplishments, Edison was responsible for, among many other things, the first universal stock ticker, movie camera, alkaline reversible battery, the first industrial research and

development laboratory (at Menlo Park, New Jersey), even the world’s biggest rock crusher, invented while spending years on one of his least successful ventures trying to mine iron ore from a western New Jersey mountain. He did all this on a lifelong diet consisting mainly of plain milk and a brutal work regimen of 18 hours a day, often at the expense of his personal life with his two wives and six children. Nearly deaf since age 12, Edison found a blessing in the silence as a way to shut out distractions. And while he relished and promoted his worldwide fame, he never cared for labels like “genius” or “wizard.” “I never had an idea in my life,” he once told a reporter. “I’ve got no imagination. ... My so-called inventions already existed in the environment — I took them out. ... The industrious one coaxes it from the environment; the drone lets it lie there while he goes off to the baseball game. The ‘genius’ hangs around his laboratory day and night.” After this introductory section, Morris’ narrative takes a highly unorthodox turn by describing the inventor’s later years in the opening chapters. He then proceeds backward, decade by decade, culminating with Edison’s younger years when many of his

most familiar and consequential inventions in electricity and sound replication occurred. Morris’ willingness to breach the organizational norms of biography may not surprise readers familiar with his even bolder previous work, “Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan,” in which Morris included himself as a made-up Zelig-like character who “knew” the former president back to his youthful days. He claimed this device gave him a way to share insights he had gained about the hard-to-penetrate former president. But the resulting blend of fact and fiction in such a high- profile biography caused a ruckus among many critics and historians. Morris never directly addresses why he presents Edison’s life in reverse chronological order. But he drops a possible clue in his endnotes by asserting that previous Edison biographies offered only scant details about his later life. Whatever the reason, Morris’ decision to begin his book with lesser known details about the aging Edison’s inventions and exploits makes for a rousing start. Edison tried during the 1920s to help free America from its dependency on foreign rubber in the early auto age by trying to identify plants capable of producing enough com mercially viable rubber that would thrive in American soil (he never did). We also learn

Disturbed got down with the sickness

For The Edge

ST. LOUIS — Disturbed rocked the Chaifetz Arena recently, touring in support of the band’s most recent album “Evolution.” Disturbed brought along metalcore band In This Moment to round out their heavy metal set for a crunch-filled evening for fans. In This Moment opened with a spooky rendition of the Steve Miller Band classic “Fly Like an Eagle,” which paired wonderfully with their stage setup, featuring a pagan-centered theme in a Salem, Massachusetts stylized environ-

ment. It had everything — including velvety black lighting, giving heavy smog that creepy edge, to go along with sizzling red bursts and blinding flashes. Vocalist Maria Brink’s haunting vocals shone brightest on “River of Fire,” “Whore,” and a new tune, ““Legacy.” The latter is a powerful, poignant song dedicated to her grandfather. He raised Brink, like a daughter, and the other

band members’ fathers served in the military. The crowd appreciated the ode to military families. Disturbed nailed the followup with a strong set of their own. Out of the gate they came with “Are You Ready,” “Prayer” and “The Vengeful One.” The visually stunning pyrotechnic backdrop added to the performance. There was no bad seat in the house. Lead singer David Draiman showed his superb vocal prowess with the omniscient cover “The Sound of Silence,” by Simon & Garfunkel, featuring a dramatic effect in a piano engulfed in flames. Super tight solos came, respectively, from bassist John Moyer, drummer Mike Wengren and guitarist Dan Donegan — something you don’t see every day in today’s shows. For nearly two hours Disturbed showed why they are a don’t miss.

‘The Casagrandes’ extols Mexican American life via animation

By RUSSELL CONTRERAS Associated Press

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — “The Casagrandes,” Nickelodeon’s new original animated series that centers around an 11-yearold girl trying to survive a big city, is one of the first cartoons in the U.S. to feature a multigenerational Mexican American family. The long-awaited spin-off from the network’s popular animation series, “The Loud House,” premiered Monday and comes as more networks are taking chances on Latinothemed shows. In this series, Ronnie Anne and her family — an older brother and single mother — leave the suburbs to move in with their large family in the fictional Great Lake City. The

apartment is located above The Casagrandes bodega, owned by Ronnie Anne’s grandpa, and in front of a subway track. The skateboarding Ronnie Anne works to adjust to her new surroundings while shunning a female cousin’s attempt to dress up with urban style and making new friends in a multicultural city. Unlike previous cartoons with Latinos like Fox’s 2016 “Bordertown” series, “The Casagrandes” seeks to tackle family-oriented themes like love, friendship, and jealousy. Family members, including Ronnie Anne’s nurse mom, work to navigate limited space in a crowded apartment amid uncertainty and humor. Miguel Puga, the show’s supervising director, said the idea for the series came

after Ronnie Anne’s character was introduced on “The Loud House” and writers started thinking about a spin-off with a new family. “I said, “let’s make them Mexican American’,” Puga said. “They started to listen, and we went from there.” Puga, a first-generation Mexican American, lived among a large family in a house as a child. To make the cartoon feel authentic, he shared his experience growing up in East Los Angeles and how his home was always crowded with family and parties. Nickelodeon executives bought in. “I just pitched them on how it was going on and they loved it,” Puga said. Yet, Puga wanted to get more Latino artists involved. So, he reached out to syndicated

cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, who was a consulting producer on the Oscar-winning 2017 animated Disney/Pixar feature “Coco.” Alcaraz agreed to join the series as a consulting producer and a writer. He wrote an episode focusing on the “Day of the Dead” and how different cultures tackle the death of loved ones. Still, not all episodes deal with serious topics. Sometimes the family’s talking parrot gets into trouble and runs up bills. Other times, an uncle disappears into the night and relives his previous life as a skateboarder. But most of the time, Ronnie Anne is working to solve a problem and learn a lesson. “We make sure this is a lot of love in these episodes,” Puga said.
