JUAN

SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENT AND ARCHITECTURE, Eksar road, Borivali west, Mumbai, In dia SEMESTER-2,(400091)2019

This is Farida Khwaja who has been living in this village for over five decades. Farida is an inspiring woman who dedicated her life for her family. She didn’t get married, to take care of her mother and sister after her father’s death. In the next pages, you’ll see Farida’s time in this village and how she witnessed the village changing over the time period.

Farida’s POV:

“Juanwadi (land between two water bodies) was one of the 14 settlements made for the workers by ‘Khwaja Ismail Chisty’ in his regime. Some of these workers belong to the same ‘Chisty silsila.’ I too am a descendant of the same.”

“My father was a lawyer in Goa and his mother lived here. He had to migrate back here because dadi wanted him to look after the fields. She even hid his degree to force him into coming back here.”

“I’ve been working tirelessly in the fields since I was 10-12 years olds. I didn’t have a “fun childhood.” I was always busy helping water the coconut and supari trees or sow the paddy fields.”

“I live tillsickdaughteraloneoftennow,

alone now. Nasiba lives next door. It’s only the two of us now. Her daughter married in Mumbai and our brother settled in Goa. Nasiba gets often but Allah knows I’m not ready to live alone. He took care of me now, he’ll do it when she’s gone.”

“When I was young, travelling for any purpose from here was labourious task. We had to travel via boats to go to the market which was overall costly. This road along the river has made connectivity a lot better and easier. We even have electricity for 28 years and water for 7 years now!”

“Earlier, there even used to be a boat to help cross the river for a minimal fare. But the man stopped his service because it was getting hard to break even.”

“Today, I don’t have paddy fields because it was getting hard both financially and in terms of labour. I still own 100 or so coconut, 100 or so supari trees on which I work tirelessly throughout the year and take paid help in the harvesting seasons.”

Our POV:

“After this long chat, we enjoyed a sumptuous meal prepared by them, thanked them and bid farewell.” “KHUDA HAAFIZ”

As the empire of the Nizam of Bijapur crumbles, the Pathans of Bijapur set off in search of a new home, a new dawn.

With the death of the grandfather and the increase of the demand for supari plantation in the region, the elder brothers demand for their share in their father’s property leading to the land being divided into 3 equal parts.

As a family of 5, a couple and their 3 boys, the Pathans seek a community that would accept them. The Pathans buy a piece of land of an auction for Rs.900/-, a land by the bank of the Terekhol river, ‘Juan’.Time takes the two elder brothers to the city of dreams while the youngest serves as a cook in the Navy and his family, his wife and his 2 young boys take care of their grandfather’s land.

The youngest of the 3 is soon forced to retire due to health issues. His youngest son Junaid a graduate of Mumbai university aspires to work in Dubai with his brother.

Presently the Naiks own most of the land in the settlement. Abdul Khadr Hasan Naik is the secretary of the village and takes care of the masjid in the village.

With the beginning of British Raj in Sawant wadi (1765) , the foot soldiers in the battalion of the king of Sawant wadi lost their livelihood. Among the many foot soldiers were the Naiks, who decided to migrate in search for a better life. As their search progresses, the Naiks come across the 14 settlements of Khawaja Ismail Chishti, a saint who preached Islam. The Naiks settle in one of the 14 settlements of Chishti, Juan wadi. Influenced by the community and Khawaja Christi’s successors, the Naiks accept Islam.
