Boardwalk to the mole is now open!

The moles of Pärnu are among the main symbols of the city. This year, we celebrate 150 years from the construction of the moles and the year has been proclaimed in Pärnu as the Year of the Moles. According to a beautiful legend, young lovers should walk to the end of the mole and seal their love with a kiss. Supposedly, this will guarantee them eternal love...

To make the path from central beach of Pärnu and Rannapark to the mole easier to navigate, we built a new 463 metre sidewalk to the beach next to the mole. Starting on asphalt and continuing on piles, the track begins near the memorial to the victims of the MS Estonia disaster behind the Tervis Spa and ends at the lighthouse. A romantic way to spend time would be to watch the sunset from the benches alongside the sidewalk; and the track provides new opportunities to discover the section of the beach next to the mole.

It is a rule of thumb that every Estonian should visit Pärnu at least once every summer! It would be even better if they had the chance to enjoy the summer in Pärnu on several weekends. In addition to excellent beaches, restaurants and parks, Pärnu also features a packed calendar of summer events. While there will be no more Weekend Festival, every end is also a chance for a new beginning –many other event organisers will give their best to make this summer special. For example, my recommendation for a visit would be the WALK Street Artists’ Festival on the 12th and 13th of July, which will fill the streets of Pärnu with many

artists, musicians, (fire) dancers, live sculptures, circus performers, bards and other entertainers. No less exciting will be the Sensation Enjoyment Festival a.k.a. Tunne, organised by local young people, on the 26th and 27th of July in Rannapark. They did not complain about having nothing to do in Pärnu but decided to take advantage of the opportunities offered by their home city.

In fact, Pärnu is a city with many layers. While the first layer consists of the beach, the Tervise Paradiis Spa, the Steffani Pizza Restaurant and other well-known locations, more experienced visitors also know how to find, for instance, the CCCP Escape Rooms, the Mary Magdalene Guild, the MiniZoo, or the Pernova Nature House. The latter is currently upgrading the only planetarium in the city, which will be converted into a 4K cinema experience with a 360-degree projection system. The summer capital of Estonia can offer interesting experiences for people with a wide range of interests. Some believe that the indoor skatepark in the Youth Centre at Raba 5 is the coolest place in the city, while others prefer the Pärnu Film Festival or the Pärnu Music Festival. The band Sibyl Vane even produced an alternative city map, presenting Pärnu through the eyes and experiences of young people. Even the beginning of the summer is dissimilar for different people. Motorcyclists will open the moto season on Supeluse street as early as the 4th of May, while the Grillfest on the 7th and 8th of June at Vallikäär meadow will once again be one of the events that kickstarts the Pärnu summer. Pärnu Visitor Centre (4 Uus street) is located in the centre of Pärnu in the historical Town Hall building, which was once the site of Pärnu city government, but is now the home of the tourist information office and Pärnu City Gallery. The Town Hall is a classical-style building initially constructed as the house of a merchant by the name of Harder.

Pärnu Visitor Centre provides maps for navigating the area and other introductory materials, recommendations on accommodation and dining as well as ideas for spending free days or putting together travel routes. The staff always know what is happening in Pärnu and Pärnu County – all year round.

In cooperation with the other tourist information offices in Estonia, they can tell you about the most beautiful and exciting locations of the country, so if your exploration of Estonia starts Pärnu, the Visitor Centre is the place to look for ideas on where to go next.

PÄRNUN VIERAILUKESKUS

Pärnun vierailukeskus sijaitsee Pärnun keskustassa (Uus 4), historiallisessa raatihuoneessa, jossa toimi aikoinaan Pärnun kaupunginhallitus, mutta nykyisin matkailuneuvonta ja Pärnun kaupungingalleria. Raatihuone rakennettiin alun perin kauppias Harderin asunnoksi, ja se edustaa klassista tyyliä.

Pärnun vierailukeskuksesta saa karttoja ja esitteitä, neuvoja majoitus- ja ruokailupaikkojen valintaan, ideoita lomapäivien viettoon ja matkareittien laatimiseen. Keskuksen työntekijät tietävät vuoden ympäri, mitä jännittävää Pärnussa ja koko ympäröivässä maakunnassa tapahtuu.

Yhteistyössä Viron matkailuinfokeskusten verkoston kanssa levitetään tietoa Viron kauneimmista ja jännittävimmistä matkakohteista. Jos aloitat Viron-kierroksesi Pärnusta, löydät juuri vierailukeskuksesta tietoja siitä, mihin matkaa kannattaa jatkaa.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Pärnu is not a very big city and therefore it is more enjoyable to walk or bike around, especially in the centre of the city and the beach area. During the summer you can find bicycle rentals in the old town and at spas and hotels. There are many cycle paths in Pärnu and cycling on them is enjoyable.

However, if you prefer to limit your walking and see a little more of the city, public transport is also a good option.

Buying an electronic transport card from RKiosk is the most convenient way, and this can then be charged with additional travel value. An electronic transport card purchased in Pärnu can also be used in Tallinn.

When entering a bus, you simply need to validate (“beep”) your card. After validating the card, it is valid for one hour and costs 2 euros. If you do not have an electronic bus card you can buy a ticket from the bus driver. In that case the ticket costs 3 euros and is only valid on that bus.

PARKING

Parking is free in Pärnu in the centre of the city area on weekdays after 18.00 and before 8.00 and on Sundays and Saturdays; in the Marketplace area on weekdays after 14.00 and before 8.00 and on the weekends; in the beach area during the summer every day after 18.00 and before 10.00. Parking areas are also free on Tammsaare puiestee, near the bridge in the centre of the city and on Lai Street. If the starting time is fixed using a parking clock or on a written notice displayed in the front windscreen then parking is free of

charge: for 1 hour in the central town area; for 3 hours parking in front of Endla theatre and for 30 minutes in the beach area and in a discount parking area. A written note or a parking clock must be placed on the windscreen or on the dashboard and must be easily visible.

Paid parking areas are marked accordingly. There are public and private parking areas in Pärnu. Parking tickets can be purchased at parking machines or using your mobile phone. Parking tickets can also be purchased at RKiosk.

EXPERIENCES IN THE HEART OF PÄRNU

An entirely different world is hiding in the heart of the summer capital of Estonia. A world with everything for those who know what they are looking for.

Port Artur Centre is like a junction point in Pärnu. It is located on the border of the old town, near the bus station and the concert hall and is easily accessible by all modes of transport. The Centre has Pärnu’s first and only open parking house. This allows those who come by car to leave their vehicle in a safe place and later conveniently pack their shopping in the car to perhaps walk around some more. There is no direct need to go anywhere far though – the 20,000 square metres of Port Artur contains everything that could be needed, starting from food and commodities and ending with experiences – a total of more than 80 stores and services.

What makes the Centre special is the fact that it has been erected on the ruins of a historic building and the architects have skilfully combined the old and the new. The old building has given the Centre its name –at the beginning of the 20th century, Estonian men were recruited here to be sent to the Russian-Japanese war. The building of Port Artur 2 is entirely new and modern, erected on the grounds of a former railway depot.

VIVID EXPERIENCE

Experiences and possibilities for spending a nice day with your family await you at every step. On floor 0 of the parking house, you can find the CityKart go-kart centre. The indoor go-kart track is open all year round. Both children and adults can try an eight-minute drive on the 250 metre track. That is more than enough to give a boost to your adrenaline level and emotions! Families with children should definitely visit the Virtual Reality Game Centre on the 1st floor of Port Artur 1 where they can experience exciting virtual adventures, try out the Playstation VR+rally chair and play on an Xbox. Both the go-kart track and the Virtual Reality Game Centre can be booked for special events.

SUSTAINABLE TRADITIONS

Nature product stores have an important place in Port Artur. Therefore you can find valuable eco-products here from the well-known store chain Biomarket and the new packaging-free store It’s Bio the mission of which is to emphasise the importance of sustainable packaing and thereby the improvement of our living environment. The Coop grocery store also has a separate corner for eco-products. Skin-friendly cosmetics can be found in The Body Shop cosmetics store which is against the animal-testing of products.

Attention is also paid to shaping environmentally friendly consumption habits. Several local clothes manufacturers are represented in Port Artur. The Centre also has two big second-hand clothes stores: Kilomax and Humana. These shops may have the most exciting items!

WORLD FULL OF FLAVOURS

Port Artur also offers plenty of gourmet experiences. Diner Portaal has filling and quick lunch offers for those who value homely meals. The abundant soup buffet there will invigorate both body and the soul.

The cosy atmosphere of Café Piano skilfully combines a book store and a café. A grand piano creates a romantic air – visitors can play the piano so others can enjoy the beautiful music played by skilful hands. Live music with a coffee and a cake –never before have concert experiences been so spontaneous and accessible!

Restaurant Umberto offers gourmet experiences from the Italian cuisine. It is run by chef Evari Tshetsin, who is in addition to his love for good food also known in Pärnu as an exemplary winter swimmer. Umberto places great value on the Estonian hunters’ catch and the Estonian farmers’ produce in order to ensure that the food is fresh and to support local producers. Therefore, Evari makes sure that raw material is brought to the table straight from the market. He also hikes a lot in local forests for raw material and inspiration.

Authentic tastes are achieved thanks to a real wood-burning pizza oven which is mandatory in a proper Italian restaurant. In the 300 to 400 degree heat, authentic pizzas are cooked in just a few minutes. The open-planned pizza and paste kitchen allow visitors to follow the cooking process and feel the smells of cooking.

Those who wish to spend a romantic Italian-style evening and celebrate an event with superb food, can book a private room at Umberto, which seats up to 20 guests. In summer, a sunny terrace with an idyllic view to the city and Pärnu River is like a cherry on top of the cake.

Pärnu ei ole kovin suuri kaupunki, ja siksi siellä on syytä turvautua kävelyyn tai pyöräilyyn, varsinkin keskustassa ja rannalla.

Pyörävuokraamoita löytyy Pärnusta kesäisin sekä vanhasta kaupungista että kylpylöistä ja hotelleista. Pärnussa on paljon polkupyöräteitä ja pyöräileminen siellä on silkkaa nautintoa.

Jos kuitenkin haluaa vähentää jalkojen rasitusta ja nähdä kaupunkia hiukan enemmän, on kätevää valita kaupunkibussi. Kätevintä on ostaa sanomalehtikioskista sähköinen bussikortti, jolle voi ladata rahaa ja käyttää sitä busseissa matkalippuna.

Pärnusta ostettu sähköinen bussikortti on voimassa myös Tallinnassa. Kun astuu linja-autoon, sähköinen bussikortti on validoitava ja linja-automatkan arvo vähennetään kortin saldosta. Matkalippu maksaa 2 € ja validoinnin jälkeen lippu on voimassa yhden tunnin. Jos sähköistä bussikorttia ei ole mukana, matkalipun voi ostaa kuljettajalta. Siinä tapauksessa lippu maksaa 3 € ja on voimassa ainoastaan kyseisen matkan ajan.

Ilmaisia pysäköintialueita löytyy myös Tammsaaren bulevardilla, keskustasillan luona ja Laikadulla.

Jos pysäköinnin alkamisaika on ilmoitettu pysäköintikiekolla tai kirjallisella ilmoituksella, niin pysäköinti on ilmainen seuraavan tunnin ajan keskusta-alueella; seuraavat 3 tuntia Endlateatterin edessä ja 30 min ranta-alueella ja ns. edullisen pysäköinnin alueella.

Kirjallinen ilmoitus tai pysäköintikiekko on asennettava moottoriajoneuvon tuulilasiin tai kojelautaan siten, että ko. ilmoituksen sisältö tai pysäköintikiekon osoitin on selkeästi luettavissa moottoriajoneuvon ulkopuolelta.

Outdoor restaurants, cafés and even a pet restaurant. There is a Good Food Fair, national fishing and cooking championships, and a large and exciting play area is available for children. The festival has performances by excellent artists of various music styles. Both festival days end with fabulous fireworks. Grill after-parties are held at the Festival clubs. You’re welcome to the first bubble festival MULLFEST in the summer capital Pärnu from 7 to 9 June to celebrate the arrival of summer right in the heart of the summer capital. At this two-day fair you can discover everything about sparkling wines and other bubbly drinks from different sides of the world and from local vendors. There are bubbles in liquids from the simple water to the exquisite champagne!

Enjoyable presentations and impressive workshops. Many restaurants from all over the city offer special events for Mullfest. Good music and dancing. On Sunday we can relax at the family picnic in Koidula park to give

Besides displaying the old and the good, we are always also trying to act as a platform for new talent that has not yet been discovered. Our collection includes several thousand pieces of visual art: paintings, photographs, films, graphic art and sculptures from around the world.

THE 26TH INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION OF NUDES: MAN, WOMAN, AND FREEDOM

10 June to 1 September 2019

The first century of the Republic of Estonia is behind us. However, the question of what to do with freedom is still in the air. The same concerns can also be observed elsewhere in Europe. The 26th exhibition of nudes – MAN, WOMAN, AND FREEDOM –is seeking answers to namely this question, starting its search quite far away – on a Caribbean island between the two world wars. That is where Ernest Hemingway loved to go fishing. And he sometimes liked to do it in the nude. We have received captivating shots of a nude Hemingway thanks to his friend, wellknown American portrait painter Waldo Peirce, who took the photographs. Dutch painter Peter Diem obtained these blackand-white negatives thanks to his father who in turn was a friend of Peirce. And thus the first hall of the 26th exhibition of nudes shall include 12 black and white photographs and 12 colourful paintings of the nude Hemingway in the middle of the open sea. What is displayed in the other halls of the exhibition, every art lover will have to come and find out for themselves.

Diverse Universe

Pärnu International Documentary and Anthropology Film Festival. The festival born from Lennart Meri’s idea in 1987 is the oldest film festival in the Baltic Countries. One of the main themes of the festival has always been the survival of indigenous people and their cultures. But the screening programme also includes social interpretations of contemporary society, portraits of interesting people and human relations as well as films on music and art. HISTORY

The Pärnu County history over 11,000 years is presented in an experiential format through the modern interactive permanent exhibition 11,000 Years of History – Experiences from Times Long Past at Pärnu Museum, which moved into its new granary building in 2012.

Pärnu County became populated after the Ice Age (c. 116,000–11,600 years ago) by the inhabitants of a summer settlement in Pulli Village, whose rare bone and antler tools and hunting and fishing instruments are on display in the Stone Age room at Pärnu Museum. A star attraction from that era is the oldest sculpture of a human figure in the Baltics, made of an elk antler over 8,000 years ago.

The Middle Ages exhibit portrays the era of the Crusades and the origins of Pärnu city. The town of Perona, together with the Cathedral and Dome School, was established in 1251 by Heinrich, the Bishop of Ösel Wiek. When the Samogitians looted the seat of the Bishop in 1263, the residents moved the town to the opposite bank of the river. In 1265, the new town was given its first privileges. The Teutonic Order, which governed Pärnu, joined the Hansaetic League in 1282, and already back then Pärnu was probably the only major sea port in Livonia. A wreck of a cog, a

merchant ship, dating back to the 14th century is a prized item in the collection, along with an authentic 14 century river gate that negotiated the entire Hansaetic trade of Pärnu.

The Russian Livonian War broke out in 1558, and being a strategically important stronghold, Pärnu kept changing hands between the warring sides. Pärnu surrendered to Swedish troops in August 1617 and soon became a fortress town. These developments are depicted in detail by Pärnu Museum’s Baroque exhibit, made up of rare artefacts originating from the Pärnu fortress town garrison, former city lords, trade and Pärnu’s university life (1699–1710).

Following a decision from 1834 to delete Pärnu from the list of Russian Imperial fortress towns, Pärnu changed gears towards becoming a resort town that offered medical services. In 1838, the Bathing House was launched (later the Mud Baths and the current Hedon Spa), which provided warm seawater baths in the summer and functioned as a sauna in the winter. Bathing huts and carriages were introduced at the beach in the 1840s.

Koidula Museum, is the national awakening and the birth of an independent Estonian state. Estonians assumed a more active role in cultural and social life in the second half of the 19th century. The need to provide education in the Estonian language was emphasised and the first issue of Perno Postimees, a newspaper edited by Johann Voldemar Jannsen, was published in 1857. Koidula Museum, located at 37 Jannseni Street, tells us the story of Jannsen’s editorial office and the life of Jannsen’s poet daughter Lydia Koidula, and also displays the interior of a mid 19th century schoolhouse.

On 23 February 1918, the Manifesto to the Peoples of Estonia was read out loud in Pärnu, declaring Estonia an independent republic. Visitors to Pärnu Museum are offered a virtual experience of that historic February day.

The final section of the permanent exhibition is dedicated to the second half of the 20th century and features an experiential recollection of the beginning of the Soviet occupation and an exhibit dealing with deportations and the partisan Forest Brothers of Pärnu. The exhibit culminates with a symbol of the restoration of Estonian independence – a track cycling gold medal won by Erika Salumäe at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, which also con-

Pärnumaan 11 000 vuotta pitkästä historiasta tekee elämyksellisen yhteenvedon vuonna 2012 uuteen aittarakennukseen muuttanut Pärnun museon nykyaikainen ja interaktiivinen perusnäyttely ”11 000 vuotta historiaa – elämyksiä vanhoilta ajoilta”.

Kun liettualainen samogitialaisten heimo tuli vuonna 1263 ryöstöretkelle piispankaupunkiin, sen asukkaat siirsivät kaupungin toiselle puolelle jokea. Vuonna 1265 uusi kaupunki sai ensimmäiset oikeutensa. Vuodesta 1282 lähtien Pärnua hallinnut saksalainen ritarikunta kuului Hansaliittoon ja todennäköisesti Pärnu oli jo tuolloin ainoa varteenotettava merisatama Liivinmaalla. Museossa on kunniapaikalla 1300-luvulta peräisin olevan koggilaivan hylky. Näh-

Elokuussa 1617 Pärnu antautui Ruotsin armeijalle ja Pärnusta tehtiin linnoituskaupunki. Tuon ajan kehityksestä antaa perusteellisen katsauksen Pärnun museon barokkiajan näyttely, jonka muodostavat harvinaiset esineet Pärnun linnoituskaupun gin varuskunnasta, entisiltä raatiherroilta, kau pankäynnistä ja Pärnun yliopistoelämästä (1699–1710).

Kun vuonna 1834 tehtiin päätös poistaa Pär nu Venäjän keisarikunnan linnoituskaupunki en luettelosta, alkoi Pärnun kehittäminen eri laisia hoitoja tarjoavaksi kylpyläkaupungiksi. Vuonna 1838 avattiin kesäisin lämpimiä meri vesikylpyjä tarjoava ja talvisin saunana käytet ty Supelasutus eli kylpylaitos (myöhemmin Mudaravila eli kylpylä-mutahoitola ja nykyisin Hedon Spa). 1840-luvulla rannassa otettiin käyttöön kylpymajat ja kylpyvaunut.

Olennainen aikakausi, johon on kiinnitetty eni ten huomiota myös Pärnun museon perus näyttelyssä ja sen alaisuudessa toimivassa Koidulan museossa, on virolaisten kansalli nen herääminen ja oman valtion synty. 1800-luvun jälkipuolella virolaiset alkoivat osallistua aktiivisemmin kulttuuri- ja seuratoi mintaan. Pärnun kaupunki ja Pärnun maakunta ovat hyvin lapsiystävällisiä. Lapsille on varmasti suuri ilo yksinkertaisesti leikkiä rannalla, uida ja ottaa aurinkoa. Pärnun kaupunkipuistot tarjoavat mahdollisuuden juosta nurmikoilla, niissä on paljon pyöräteitä, joilla voi turvallisesti pyöräillä.

Yksi Pärnun kaupungin suosituimmista viihdepaikoista on pieni kukkula keskellä kaupunkia Ringi-kadun ja Lõuna-kadun välissä. Se on osa entistä kaupungin linnoitusvallia, jolla on ylpeä nimi Munamägi. Munamäen

ympäristössä on extreme-lajien urheilukenttä, hiekkalaatikoita, kuntolaitteita, keinuja. Siellä siis kaikenikäisillä lapsilla ja nuorilla on paljon mahdollisuuksia hauskanpitoon. 20. heinäkuuta Pärnun Rantapuistossa tapahtuu Iloisten Lasten festivaali. Tämä festivaali on suunniteltu antamaan perheille mahdollisuuden askarrella koko päivän ajan.

Riikaan päin Pärnun kaupungista sijaitsee kaikkien lasten suurten suosikkien koiratyttö Loten ja sen ystävien asuinpaikka Keksijöiden kylä eli Lottemaa. Tämä on hyvä paikka sekä

lapsille että aikuisille. Lottemaassa voi tavata Keksijöiden kylän asukkaita, jotka leikkivät, harrastavat käsitöiden tekemistä, urheilevat ja seurustelevat kylään tulleiden lasten ja heidän vanhempiensa kanssa. Lottemaassa on myös kunnon teatteri.

Päivän aikana järjestetään noin 10 isompaa ja pienempää teatteriesitystä. Keksijöiden kylän jokaisella asukkaalla on oma maailmankuva, luonne ja rooli, joten he opettavat lapsia ymmärtämään monimutkaisia asioita suunsa, silmiensä ja huumorinsa kautta.

The new and modern Pärnu Beach Stadium Hostel is a part of a large sports complex. It offers accommodation for everyone: athletes as well as tourists visiting Pärnu. The hostel features comfortable and bright rooms, equipped with a TV, a balcony and a washing room.

The Pärnu Beach Stadium is an innovative training centre offering, in addition to excellent training conditions, modern facilities for measuring, testing and analysing the efficiency of the effort, as well as for post-training recovery. The SPINTEST testing and fitness development system includes functions for measuring and developing speed, acceleration, jumping ability, throwing speed, etc.

A tablet provided with DartFish software for analysing the technique of movements and team positioning can be used for video recording and immediate analysis of the effort. The combination of SPINTEST and DartFish provides coaches and athletes with many new opportunities to improve their performance. For theory sessions, the Pärnu Beach Stadium offers two properly equipped workshop rooms for up to 40 people each. For recovery, the Pärnu Beach Stadium can provide both cold and hot procedures – an ice bath and an ice machine and, of course, saunas.

Uusi ja nykyaikainen Pärnun Rantastadionin hostelli on osa suurta urheilukompleksia. Hostelli tarjoaa majoitusta kaikille, niin urheilijoille kuin myös Pärnuun tutustumaan tuleville vieraille. Hostellin huoneet ovat mukavat ja valoisat. Huoneissa on televisio, parveke ja kylpyhuone.

Suoritus voidaan videoida ja analysoida saman tien tablettitietokoneella, joka on varustettu liiketekniikkaa ja joukkueen jäsenten liikkeitä analysoivalla DartFish- videoanalyysiratkaisulla. The beach of Pärnu includes three taps offering clean drinking water for cooling yourself on a hot summer day. By providing drinking water free of charge, the city of Pärnu promotes the use of tap water to reduce the consumption of bottled water and the associated health risks. One tap can be found in front of the women’s beach on the extension of Mere Avenue, one is located near the playground on the extension of Lehe Street, while the third is on the beach at the Pärnu Surf Centre. Another important function is cleaning your feet of sand. People often tend to use the fountain for this purpose, but this can lead to pump malfunctions. Instead, using the taps is the best option for drinking water and washing your feet.

HEALTH THROUGH MOVEMENT

Pärnu is a city suitable for all kinds of physical activity. The seaside park has fitness trails; the long coastline is perfect for jogging or walking, and if you love water, you can go swimming in the sea or river. In recent years, the light traffic road around Pärnu River, commonly referred to as “Jaan-

son’s trail”, has been the most popular sporting venue. City residents nicknamed the trail to honour Jüri Jaanson, a famous rower born in Pärnu, who is now a member of the Riigikogu (Estonian parliament).

Jaanson’s trail runs along the river to connect the Pärnu Old Bridge in the city centre and the New Bridge in the Papiniidu district. This way, you can start walking, jogging or biking at any point, go along the river bank and across two bridges and come back to where you started.

The part of the light traffic road in the city centre features interesting design solutions, and there are numerous benches along the way. Jaanson’s trail is keenly used for recreational sports or leisurely walks with children or dogs. The fitness trail can be pretty overcrowded at rush hour, so pay attention when riding a bicycle or rollerblading. Movement gives health!

Pärnun rannalla on kolme puhtaan juomaveden hanaa, joista voi viilentää itseään kuumana kesäpäivänä. Tarjoamalla ilmaista juomavettä Pärnun kaupunki edistää vesijohtoveden käyttöä ja pyrkii siten vähentämään pulloveden kulutusta ja siihen liittyviä terveysriskejä. Yksi juomavesihana on naistenrannan edustalla Mere puiesteen jatkeella, toinen leikkikentän luona Lehe-kadun jatkeella ja kolmas on rannassa Pärnun Surffikeskuksen luona. Myös hiekkaisten jalkojen peseminen on tärkeää. Sitä tehdään usein suihkulähteessä, mutta se aiheuttaa pumppuvikoja. Joten parasta on hörpätä vettä ja pestä jalat vesihanoista.

Lenkkipolkuja löytyy rantapuistosta, juoksemiseen tai kävelyyn sopii myös pitkä merenranta, ja jos pidät vedestä, voit uida sekä meressä että joessa.

Viime vuosien suosituimmaksi liikuntapaikaksi on noussut Pärnujoen ympäristössä kulkeva kevyen liikenteen väylä, jota kutsutaan kansan suussa Jaansonin poluksi (Jaansoni rada). Pärnulaiset ottivat tämän nimen käyttöön kunnianosoituksena pärnulaiselle soutajalle Jüri Jaansonille, joka on nykyisin virolainen kansanedustaja.

Jaansonin polku yhdistää joen rantaa pitkin keskustan Vanhan sillan Papiniidun kaupunginosassa sijaitsevaan Uuteen siltaan. Kävely-, juoksu- tai pyörälenkin voi aloittaa mistä tahansa pisteestä, kulkea pitkin joenvartta, ylittää kaksi siltaa ja päätyä takaisin lähtöpisteeseen.

Kevyen liikenteen väylän keskustan puoleinen osa on arkkitehtonisesti kiinnostava ja siellä on paljon istuinpenkkejä. Jaansonin polkua käyttävät runsaasti sekä kuntoilijat että tavalliset, lasta tai koiraa ulkoiluttavat jalankulkijat.

Ruuhka-aikoina voi kuntopolulla olla jopa tungosta, ja tällöin on nopeammin liikkuvien pyöräilijöiden ja rullaluistelijoiden pysyttävä valppaina. Terveys tulee liikunnasta!

OLD TOWN

The Old Town, which basically means Rüütli street as well as Hospidali, Pühavaimu, Hommiku and the other streets crossing it, is the historically formed shopping district of Pärnu. Old but beautifully restored buildings are home to small shops selling clothes, jewellery, souvenirs, drinks, spices and a lot more. In the Old Town, shops alternate with cafés, so the area of Rüütli street is particularly nice for walking and having a good time, and of course, shopping.

NEW CITY CENTRE

Pärnu’s new city centre is located at the intersection of Aida, Ringi and Põhja streets and is marked by Marten’s square. It is home to the Port Artur 1, Port Artur 2 and Pärnu Keskus shopping centres. It was only a few years ago that the present-day image of the new city centre started forming, and the area has certainly become larger and more interesting.

PAPINIIDU

The Papiniidu shopping area with its largest venue, the Kaubamajakas shopping centre, is located a short distance from the city centre, and you can get there along Riga road in the direction of Riga, the capital of Latvia. We

do not recommend walking there, but, luckily, there are free buses from the city centre that will bring you directly to Kaubamajakas. Naturally, you can also get there using the city buses or by taxi.

Kaubamajakas and other shopping locations in the Papiniidu area are popular with Pärnu residents and visitors alike. Goods to suit anyone’s taste can certainly be found there, and naturally, you will not have to suffer from the pangs of hunger as the Gurmaania food court at Kaubamajakas features numerous eating places.

WHERE TO EAT?

Pärnu is famous for its numerous cafés, restaurants and pubs. There are plenty in each city district, and all of them are distinctive and provide a range of dining experiences. You can have a decent meal at a café or a pub, so there is no reason to fear that, for example, there will be no food to accompany your beer or coffee.

The greatest dining experience undoubtedly awaits you in Pärnu’s restaurants, where food is a bit more expensive than in pubs, but the price is justified considering the highly impressive service and interiors. The standards of Pärnu restaurants are rising every year, and what certainly contributes to this is Pärnu Restaurant Week held every spring. If you appreciate delicious food, we definitely recommend visiting Pärnu again in spring during this period. The Café Week is held in autumn, but its “fruit” can also be enjoyed in the summer.

One can safely claim that the standards of Pärnu restaurants are no lower than those of the best in Estonia or Europe, and as far as the food in pubs and cafés goes, sometimes it can beat what you can get at a restaurant. In Pärnu, food is generally served until late evening, so you can just enter any café, pub or restaurant you see first without having to

look for a fast-food outlet although Pärnu has plenty of these.

Favourite dishes among local pub-goers include a decent slice of pork with sauerkraut on the side, but a cheese schnitzel is equally popular.

World cuisines are represented by places specializing in Asian, Italian, Armenian and Georgian food. What some of these offer can be described as properly authentic; the food in others is slightly more “Estonianized”, which is not at all bad and rather provides something that cannot be found elsewhere. Keeping in mind that the best eating places in Pärnu are a short walk away from one another, the city is perfect for culinary exploration tours, during which you can have a meal at one place and take a walk to another one only to realize that you are hungry and could eat something again.

MARKET

Pärnu’s Old Market is located on Suur-Sepa Street opposite Pärnu City Government. It is a popular, beloved place, primarily thanks to the fresh produce offered by local farmers. This year, the legendary market place so highly valued among locals underwent thorough renovations.

The renewed market offers vegetables, fish,

meat and many other tasty products. The market building also has cosy restaurants and cafés. The morning bustle at the market always guarantees a pleasant refreshing experience. Even if you don’t need to buy anything, it is worth popping by. And if you do, you will definitely find something you like.

BEER

For decades, beer – a beverage so popular among both Estonians and visitors from abroad – has been brewed in Pärnu. The history of beer brewing in Pärnu is long and ex-

citing, although it was unfortunately interrupted for quite a few years.

However, Pärnu beer-lovers soon filled the empty space by launching the production of craft beer, thus creating the Pernauer brand. The brewers of the Pernauer craft beer aim to enrich the local beer culture and offer the best taste experience. The Pernauer range includes, for instance, the Pernauer Lager, which is an easy drinking Vienna style lager, as well as the reddish-brown dark lager brew Pernauer Must, the taste of which is dominated by sweeter tones.

We are located only a 10-minute walk from the centre of town. The guesthouse has 20 double rooms with comforts. There are also small huts in the courtyard with a pleasant sheltered area. Cars and motorcycles can be safely parked in the garage or supervised parking lot.

PÄRNU YEAR OF MOLES

This is the 150th year from the completion of the Pärnu moles and, in order to celebrate it, 2019 was declared as the year of moles in Pärnu. A 463-metre sidewalk was built to the eastern mole of Pärnu for this occasion. The wooden track starts near the memorial to the victims of the MS Estonia disaster and ends on the sandy beach close to the lighthouse.

The three metres wide track was built to enable pedestrians and cyclists reach the beach without getting their feet wet, irrespective of the season.

The Pärnu mole is certainly one of the most interesting sights in the city. Originally built for the purpose of deepening the harbour bed and boosting trade, the rocks of the mole have been moved by ice over the years, but the mole still stands without needing much repair. The eastern mole, being one of the symbols of Pärnu, is also a popular romantic spot. According to a legend, young lovers are expected to walk to the end of the mole and seal their love with a kiss. Supposedly, this will guarantee them eternal love.

It is definitely worth keeping an eye on Pernauer, because their beers are unique and in just a few years have become a symbol of Pärnu. Pärnu has over 300 accommodation options, ranging from large luxurious hotels to smaller cosier hostels and guesthouses, camping grounds and home accommodation. In order to find suitable accommodation for the summer, it would be wise to book well in advance, but even if you leave looking for accommodation to the last minute, do not despair, as there are often cancellations and it is quite possible to stumble on a vacancy.

If staying in central Pärnu and near the beach, keep in mind that the summer atmosphere may disturb your sleep somewhat, but don’t worry about this too much. If you prefer complete quiet, aim at the suburbs, where large modern hotels give way to hostels in quiet residential areas.

The larger hotels in the city centre and near the beach all boast waterparks, conference rooms and very fine restaurants that are worth a visit even if you are not staying at the hotel.

The summer track of the Pärnu Karting Centre is located at Jannseni St. 50a, Pärnu.

You can simply have fun or try to beat the fastest lap time – the Karting Centre offers something for everyone. Perhaps, if you happen to be very good at it, you can be the next Ott Tänak or Michael Schumacher! Whether you go karting alone or with a group, you are guaranteed excitement and improvement of your skills.

The indoor track of the Pärnu Karting Centre (Savi St. 36, Pärnu) has ten powerful 270cc karts for you to race safely on track and compete with your friends. The seats and pedals are adjustable so that they are comfortable for any driver, be they 125cm or two meters tall.

ROCKS TELLING THE HISTORY

The path that runs along Aia Street, starting from the basic school at Kuninga Street up to the Iseseisvuse square in Pärnu, is marked with nine large granite rocks that have plates representing the timeline of emergence of the Estonian state. The information signs on the symbolic timeline recount the events that led to the declaration of independent statehood and proclamation of the manifest from the balcony of the Endla theatre. Standing nearly one meter in height, the rocks have been provided with metal plates explaining the historical events. They also include an English translation. Thus, you can combine a scenic walk with an exciting educational experience.

KIHNU

Visiting Pärnu County would be incomplete without a trip to the island of Kihnu. The unique ancient traditions that are partly still observed and the way of life on Kihnu are included on the UNESCO cultural heritage list. Modern day Kihnu is a unique amalgam of the present and the past. For example, the women of Kihnu routinely wear traditional skirts (kört) that they weave themselves; small children know the traditional dances and songs, and the Kihnu dialect is taught at school. The attention of UNESCO inspired the launch of the Kihnu Cultural Space Foundation, responsible for the development and preservation of the culture of Kihnu.

The sea near Kihnu Island is shallow and rocky, and the island is surrounded by a multitude of islets and low ridges. The most beautiful group, Sangelaiud, form a nature protection area. Kihnu Island and the surrounding sea with its islets is an important nesting area for many birds. For this reason, Kihnu Strait was declared a special protection area of international importance. The best way to get around the small Kihnu Island is either to rent a bicycle on the island or to take one with you. A tour from the back of a lorry and a fish picnic are sure to be unique experiences.

KIHNU

Pärnumaan vierailu ei ole täydellinen, ellet mene käymään Kihnun saarella. Kihnun ainutlaatuiset, osittain nykypäivään säilyneet muinaiset perinteet ja elämäntapa on otettu Unescon aineettoman kulttuuriperinnön luetteloon. Tämän päivän Kihnu on omaperäinen sekoitus nykyaikaa ja menneisyyttä. Saaren naisväki käyttää edelleen itse kutomiaan kansanpuvun hameita, joista käytetään nimitystä kört; pienetkin lapset osaavat kihnulaisia tansseja ja lauluja ja Kihnun murretta opetetaan koulussakin. Unescon huomion ansiosta on perustettu säätiö nimeltään Kihnu Kultuuriruum, jonka tehtävänä on Kihnun kulttuurin säilyttäminen ja kehittäminen.

Kihnua ympäröivä meri on matala ja kivinen, saaren ympärillä on runsaasti pieniä luotoja ja matalia selänteitä. Kauneimmat luodot, Sangelaiud, on otettu luonnonsuojelualueeksi. Sekä Kihnun saari että ympäröivä meri luotoineen tarjoaa pesimäpaikan monille linnuille, ja Kihnun salmi onkin nimetty kansainvälisesti merkittäväksi lintualueeksi.

Paras tapa tutustua pieneen Kihnun saareen on vuokrata paikan päältä tai tuoda mantereelta mukanaan polkupyörä. Kiertoajelu kuorma-auton lavalla ja kalalounas ulkoilmassa ovat myös ainutlaatuisia kokemuksia.

YACHT CLUB

Pärnu Yacht Club was launched by a handful of Imperial Russian Navy officers, led by the Pärnu Harbour Master Dmitri Luhmanov, who also drafted the first statutes of the Pärnu Sailing Club. On 21 June 1906, Julius Dicks, Anatoli Palibin, Dmitri Luhmanov, Artur Fröhling and Christjan Meybaum signed a petition requesting that the Maritime Ministry approve the establishment of Pärnu Sailing Club based on the prepared statutes. Therefore, 21 June 1906 is considered the club’s birthday and the listed gentlemen its founding members.

Although the current Pärnu Yacht Club guesthouse is not very large, quite a lot of people stay at the yacht club, many of them on board the yachts that have brought them to Pärnu. The yacht club itself, with its sailboats, guesthouse and restaurant is one of the loveliest riverside spots in Pärnu. It is a favourite among visitors as well as locals. It often hosts concerts with live music and the frequent sailing regattas have a calming effect on the nerves.

Vaikka Pärnun pursiseuran nykyinen vierastalo ei olekaan kovin suuri, yöpyy paikalla suuri määrä ihmisiä, koska osa viettää yönsä veneissä, joilla he ovat saapuneet Pärnuun. Pärnujoen rannalla sijaitsevat pursiseuran tilat purjeveneineen, vierastaloineen ja ravintoloineen kuuluvat Pärnun kaupungin viihtyisimpiin ajanviettopaikkoihin. Siellä viihtyvät sekä matkailijat että paikalliset asukkaat. Usein järjestetään elävän musiikin konsertteja, ja purjehduskilpailut auttavat purkamaan jännitteitä.

Pärnu does not mind partying, but a good party implies sensible behaviour. If you respect others, you will be respected, and no troubles should arise. In case anything bad does happen, make sure to inform the police by calling the 112 emergency number.

The flamboyance of Pärnu nightlife cannot be described in words; you have to see it. It combines small-town atmosphere with bigcity ambition. Anyway, even if you are fast asleep, do not get angry with those who stay up and party through the night. What you should keep in mind though is that the “nighttime quiet” rule in the summer in Pärnu applies between midnight and six in the morning. And please remember that no one will stay awake forever and everyone needs to sleep at some point.

PÄRNU COUNTY

Pärnu County is the largest county in Estonia, with an area of 5,419 km², population of 86,163. KURGJA FARM

Kurgja Village is home to Kurgja Farm, or the Farm Museum of C. R. Jakobson, which provides a comprehensive picture of life on the land. Carl Robert Jakobson (1841–1882) was an Estonian farmer, politician, educator and one of the most beloved leaders of the Estonian national movement.

Jakobson became a farm owner in 1874. As he wished to be a role model and a teacher, he intended to build his farm at Kurgja as an

exemplar. His dream was to establish there a dairy industry school, which was meant to develop into a complete exemplar school of agriculture. All the buildings at Kurgja Linnutaja Farm were completed according to C.R. Jakobson’s own design and are therefore unique.

The Farm Museum of C. R. Jakobson was established in 1948 and its first director was Jakobson’s eldest daughter Linda. Buildings needing partial or complete restoration have now been completed.

The main building of the museum houses an exhibition on the life and activities of C. R. Jakobson. As a new addition, the threshing barn and grain dryer were completed according to Jakobson’s original design. The museum is special because it is an active farm with cattle breeding and land cultivation. Estonian native cattle, white headed sheep, Estonian horses, roosters, hens and turkeys are a true feast for the eye.

PÄRNUMAA

Pärnumaa on Viron suurin maakunta, jonka pinta-ala on 5419 km², asukkaita on 86 163 Jos otetaan huomioon, että puolet maakunnan väestöstä asuu Pärnun kaupungissa, voi luvuista päätellä, että suurin osa Pärnumaata on harvaan asuttua mutta luonnoltaan rikasta. Pärnumaalta löytyy hyvin paljon metsiä, pitkä valkohiekkainen merenranta ja runsaasti mahdollisuuksia patikointiin, lintujen tarkkailuun tai laiskaan auringonottoon.

Pärnumaalla on paljon erilaisia yöpymispaikkoja, mutta ainakin jonkin yön voisit viettää raittiissa ilmassa ja vapaan luonnon keskellä. Valtion metsänhoitokeskus (Riigimetsa Majandamise Keskus, RMK) on perustanut tähän tarkoitukseen retkeilyalueen. Alue soveltuu sekä ranta- että metsälomailuun. Rantaloma tarjoaa mahdollisuuden nauttia kauniista auringonlaskuista, kuunnella luonnon ääniä, rakentaa hiekkalinnoja tai vain nauttia pelkästä oleilusta.

RMK:n retkeilyalue edustaa samanaikaisesti sekä villiä luontoa että sivistystä, joten se sopii erinomaisesti kaupunkilaiselle, joka haluaa pistäytyä luonnon keskellä. Kokeneemmat retkeilijät löytävät paljon villimpääkin luontoa, mutta se jää etäämmälle merestä, sillä Pärnumaan rannikolla toimii edelleen kalastajia, joiden talot reunustavat koko rannikkoa. Rantaniityt ja kalastajakylät ovat näkemisen arvoisia, mutta jos haluat kohdata karhun, joka on kuvattu myös Pärnumaan vaakunaan, kannattaa suunnata pikemmin Vändran seudulle.

KURGJAN MAATILA

Pärnumaalla Kurgjan kylässä sijaitsee Kurgjan maatila eli Carl Robert Jakobsonin maatilamuseo, joka esittelee kattavasti elämää pellolla ja pellon laidalla. Carl Robert Jakobson (1841–1882) tuli Virossa tunnetuksi tietoisena maanviljelyn edistäjänä, poliitikkona ja kansanvalistajana ja on Viron kansallisen heräämisen rakastetuimpia johtajia. Jakobson osti Kurjgan maatilan vuonna 1874. Pyrkimyksenään näyttää esimerkkiä ja opastaa muita hän päätti perustaa Kurgjalle mallitilan. Hänen haaveenaan oli perustaa Kurgjalle maitotalouskoulu, jonka piti sittemmin laajeta täydelliseksi maanviljelyksen mallioppilaitokseksi. Kaikki Kurgjan Linnutajan maatilan rakennukset on rakennettu Jakobsonin suunnitelmien mukaan ja ne ovat siis ainutlaatuisia.

Vuonna 1948 perustettiin Jakobsonin maatilamuseo, jonka ensimmäisenä johtajana toimi hänen vanhin tyttärensä Linda. Täydellistä tai osittaista kunnostusta vaatineet rakennukset on nyt saatu kuntoon. Museon päärakennuksessa sijaitsee Jakobsonin elämää ja toimintaa esittelevä näyttely. Uudisrakennuksena on valmistunut riihi Jakobsonin suunnitelman mukaan.

Museon erikoisuus on se, että siellä kasvatetaan karjaa ja viljellään maata. Silmäniloa tarjoavat virolaiset maatiaislehmät, valkopäiset lampaat, eestinhevonen, kukot, kanat ja kalkkunat.
