For fifteen years the Truman Brewery has been regenerating its ten acres of vacant and derelict buildings into spectacular office, retail, leisure and event spaces. The finely tuned mix of business and leisure has created an environment unique in London, making the Truman Brewery;

A destination in its own right.

The Tin House by William Russell Bacon Street

THE TIN HOUSE

William Russell graduated from the Royal College of Art and set up practice with David Adjaye for a while. They went their separate ways in 2000, Russell working on his own before joining the design practice Pentagram in 2005. This is his own house built on a tight site just off the famous Brick Lane in Tower Hamlets, the Tin House The name comes from the galvanised steel panels which clad the majority of the house. Internally, the programme is unconventional with bedrooms on the lower levels and living areas above, taking advantage of the light and increased privacy granted by the form of the building. There are a number of double-height spaces and external terraces. The structure is formed of concrete. In an area where buildings are predominantly brick, this structure seems a little incongruous, but doesn’t jar.

Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Mosque Brick Lane

JAMME MASJID

This plain but gracious rectangular brick property with tall arched windows which lets the light flood in, is today a mosque, the London Jamme Masjid. Set high up on the wall is a vertical sundial with the Latin inscription Umbra Sumus, meaning’we are shadows’. This inscription refers both to the workings of the sundial and as reminder that our life on earth is fleeting. The inscription has come to have an added significance for this area, as waves of immigrants have arrived and then moved on. The Mosque is known throughout the UK and Europe and is the focal point for the Muslim community in London. It has a vibrant community and the Mosque provides many activities for Muslims and non muslims. It aims is to strengthen inter faith understanding and to serve its community well and seeks to present Islam to the wider society – providing Islamic literature, organises open days, study groups, conferences and so on.

OTTO SCHADE

Otto’s painting ranges from abstract and surrealism to even urban art. Working mainly with oil paint and traditional supports such as stretched canvas, he also practices other techniques such as collage, illustration and stencil. The themes behind his compositions read in a personal, metaphorical sense with a sharp, ironic touch. Otto’s painting shows a unique style, proving an inventive imagination as well as a refined technique. Otto Schade’s various street art pieces can be randomly spotted in and around London Town.
