’m a sales assistant. I’m in charge of the shop windows displaying the pieces made out of gold and, like my colleagues, I collaborate on all the tasks performed at the shop: serving customers, receiving goods, checking inventory, etc.
Were you familiar with the fine watch industry? No. I’ve been learning little by little and now I find it fascinating. What has the process been like? I’ve worked a lot. I’ve been at some manufactures in Switzerland doing training courses to become, for example, an ambassador to Omega and Chopard. All the brands help us; they propose courses each year to expand our knowledge and keep us up-to-date on their projects and innovations. What has surprised you most? Above all, the quest to miniaturise cases and calibres. There are exceptionally elegant watches that house a perpetual calendar in only 36 mm. More complicated than it seems. Definitely! It’s not just about combining a steel case with some hands; there are a lot of hours of work behind it all. At a manufacture, each worker is devoted to a very specific task: polishing a screw, inserting indexes, setting diamonds one by one… it’s something that is difficult to appreciate if you’ve never seen it before. Couldn’t this be a bit frustrating for the buyer? There are customers who don’t ultimately understand it when you explain to them why a watch has a certain value. Nonetheless, many are perfectly aware of what they have on the table and of what you’re telling them.

Was hat Sie am meisten überrascht? Vor allem der Versuch, die Gehäuse und Kaliber immer kleiner zu machen. Es gibt sehr elegante Uhren mit nur 36 mm mit einem immerwährenden Kalender. Komplizierter, als es aussieht. Zweifellos! Es bedeutet nicht nur, ein Edelstahlgehäuse mit ein paar Zeigern zu kombinieren; dahinter stecken viele Stunden Arbeit. In einer Manufaktur widmet sich jeder Arbeiter einer konkreten Aufgabe: eine Schraube polieren, die Zeiger einsetzen, Brillanten einfassen ... Man kann es nicht wirklich schätzen, wenn man das noch nie gesehen hat. Kann das beim Käufer nicht ein wenig Frustration hervorrufen? Es gibt Kunden, die verstehen es nicht, wenn man ihnen erklärt, dass eine Uhr einen bestimmten Wert hat. Aber viele wissen ganz genau, was vor ihnen auf dem Tisch liegt und wovon man spricht.

Statistics show that in the fine watch industry, the middle price range is the one with the greatest market share. That’s probably our case. We have a large variety of watches ranging between €3,000 and €6,000, a range that most of our customers are in. Nevertheless, we also have other brands like Patek Philippe and Jaeger-LeCoultre, which have a smaller public.

Do you think that people see such exclusive brands as an investment? There are increasingly more people looking for a watch that can be passed from generation to generation and have a legacy. There are brands that value the immediate impact more, but others that give a lifetime guarantee on both the simplest watch and on the most complicated one. In this sense, I’d say yes: the customer is making an investment.

Friendly people who try to make it so the buyer feels comfortable, has a good time and obtains all the information he or she needs about the piece in front of him or her. We have customers who have been coming for many years, and this is also because we stay in contact with them, we call them and we tell them about the latest things we have.

n their own way, faithful to the style that has made them what they are, each of these three brands has captured the growing interest in women for mechanics and has created watches combining exquisite design, use of the most precious materials and the most sophisticated calibres. Let’s start with Omega, for example. This year, the company presented a new range of 38 mm pieces in its renowned Speedmaster collection. Here we’ll take a look at two of the most feminine models. At a first glance, the watches stand out for their oval seconds sub-dial located

at 9 o’clock, the chronograph counters that total minutes (at 3 o’clock) and hours (at 6 o’clock) and the date integrated vertically in the latter counter. This design takes its cues from the sub-dials used by Omega in the past for several of its De Ville watches. In the case of the so-called “Cappuccino” model, a name referring to the colour codes, the company has coupled an elegant diamondstudded bezel with its famous tachymeter scale, adding a touch of elegance to a timepiece that retains the collection’s sporty DNA. To round out these lovely brown tones, Omega has created the case in steel and in 18-carat SednaTM gold. The case on the second watch (shown at the beginning of the article), meanwhile, comes in steel and features a white mother-of-pearl dial. The oval sub-dials boast diamond frames and the hands are rhodium plated, except those for the chronograph function, which are made out of 18-carat rose gold. Moreover, both versions have a case-back stamped with the iconic Hippocampus medallion, typical of the Speedmaster, and are powered by automatic calibre Omega 3330 with Co-Axial technology and a silicon hairspring. THE DELICATE CHIME OF JAEGER-LECOULTRE From the chronographs to the alarm. Production at Jaeger-LeCoultre in 2017 has been particularly fruitful as far as complications are concerned, highlighting above all its outstanding Rendez-Vous Sonatina Large. It is not the first time that the maison endeavours with this function. The legendary Memovox model, which was released in 1957 and considered one of the manufacturer’s flagship pieces, was equipped with an alarm. Now, however, Jaeger-LeCoultre has done away with the everlasting calibre 956 and created self-winding movement 735, which builds up a maximum 40-hour power reserve and has a semi-circular window between 5 o’clock and 7 o’clock for the day/night function. The difference between the two is basically related to the chime. While the 956 said good morning with a prolonged and forceful vibration, the 735 expresses itself with a gentle chime, making it more of an alert than an alarm. The time of this “new” function is indicated by a small star running along the outside of the dial which is set using the crown located at 2 o’clock.

Die Jaeger-LeCoultre-Produktion 2017 war hinsichtlich der Komplikationen besonders fruchtbar, herausragend vor allem die funkelnagelneue Rendez-Vous Sonatina Large. Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass das maison sich an diese Funktion herantraut, wir erinnern an das legendäre Modell Memovox aus dem Jahr 1957, eine der Standarten der Marke, die bereits mit der Alarmfunktion ausgestattet war. Dieses Mal verzichtete JaegerLeCoultre jedoch auf das Kaliber 956 und kreierte das Automatikkaliber 735 mit 40 Stunden Gangreserve und fügte zwischen 5 und 7 Uhr ein halbrundes Fenster für die Tag-/Nacht-Anzeige hinzu. Der wichtigste Unterschied zwischen den beiden Uhren ist der Alarmton. Während die 956 ihre Trägerin mit einer anhaltenden, starken Vibration aufmerksam machte, bietet die 735 einen dezenten Ton, eher einen sanften Hinweis als ein Alarm. Regarding aesthetics, it is undeniable that this is an extremely beautiful and elegant watch. Its case, measuring 38.2 mm in diameter, is crafted in pink gold and features set diamonds on the bezel. Meanwhile, the dial is like a subtle sheet of silver with a guilloche finish and transferred Arabic numerals. The Sonatina Large also comes in a completely purple version made out of white gold.

PATEK PHILIPPE, MASTER OF LEGIBILITY To mark the 40th anniversary of extra-thin self-winding calibre 240, created by Patek Philippe in 1977, the manufacturer has presented several watches showcasing the versatility of this outstanding machinery. If we focus on level of complexity, the most attractive is certainly Perpetual Calendar Reference 7140G. In a white gold case with a diameter of only 35.1 mm, the brand has managed to house a stunning silver dial with a sunburst finish that has several levels of reading. In this, the art of legibility, Patek Philippe is definitely the great master. In addition to time information, the face has three sub-dials: one at 9 o’clock that uses two different hands to indicate the day of the week and 24 hours; another at 3 o’clock that shows month and the leap-year cycle; and finally, one at 6 o’clock where the date and moon phases are displayed. This spectacle is enhanced with a striking bezel set with 68 diamonds and an alligator strap with square scales. Along these lines, Patek Philippe has surprised fans with a new version of its Annual Calendar (only requires one correction a year), a piece that has become a fully-fledged classic and is now being presented under Reference 4947G-010. In this case, the diameter of the case has been increased to 38 mm, making it possible to open up space on the dial and give prominence to the 141 set diamonds on its white gold case. The silvery dial features a sophisticated linen finish with gold applied Arabic numerals. On this lovely canvas, automatic calibre 324 S QA LU arranges three sub-dials at 3 o’clock, 6 o’clock and 9 o’clock to indicate months, moon phases and day of the week, in addition to the date window.

yan Gosling does whatever he wants. So much so that he was born above paradise, in Ontario, Canada, (1980) in the bosom of a Mormon family. His academic record is far from the image of the “perfect guy” that he projects without intending to (he says). In fact, his childhood was more about solitude and not fitting in than about anything else. But then along came dance. Gosling got involved with a local dance company and at 14 landed a role in The Mickey Mouse Club, a children’s TV programme in which he caused a lot more trouble off screen than on, alongside Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. After appearing in other entertainment shows like Are You Afraid of the Dark? (1995) and Breaker High (1997-98), he performed in his first feature film: The Believer (2001). In it he played a young Jew turned neo-Nazi, a role that earned him a nomination for Most Promising Performer by the Chicago Film Critics Association. Afterwards he played some roles in independent films, until 2004, when he co-starred in The Notebook alongside Rachel McAdams. Despite the bad relationship between the two at the beginning of shooting, that film made the public’s imagination soar regarding those kisses under the rain, labelling the actor’s public image forever. Or not… A PRODUCT OF OUR IMAGINATION Gosling could have been lost in the maze of love, but in 2011 he starred in three wonderful and diverse films in one fell swoop: Crazy, Stupid, Love, Drive and The Ides of March. It would be impossible to do more with less. In the first he was a veritable Casanova, even though shooting shirtless scenes embarrassed him to the point of saying enough is enough. t all started when the Montechiari race track in Brescia lost organisation of the Italian Grand Prix in 1922 to the Monza race track near Milan. The city was offended, as were some of its most illustrious residents: Count Aymo Maggi di Gradella and Count Franco Massot, founders of the Automobile Club of Brescia; journalist Giovanni Canestrini; and former race driver and organiser Renzo Castagneto. The “Four Musketeers”, as they were popularly known, thought of something better, bigger and, above all, more beautiful. Driven by the magic and the innocence of the roaring twenties, they designed a route in the shape of an “8” that traversed half of Italy in a round trip journey between Brescia and Rome, covering a total distance of 1,638 kilometres. Finally, on 26 March 1927, 77 vehicles departed from Brescia ready to embark upon what was officially the first adventure of the “mille miglia”, a dream come true that has come of age and now has 90 years under its belt.

REGULAR, BUT EXTRAORDINARY Chopard revisits the most vintage aesthetics of the Mille Miglia to presents its new regularly produced chronographs: four models in total (two for men and two for women) inspired by the automobiles that took part in the famous race between 1927 and 1940. The references for him, which differ only in the colour of the dial, are fitted with a 42 mm polished steel case and feature a classic tri-compax layout on the dial for the chronograph counters, with the seconds sub-dial at 3 o’clock, an hour totalizer at 6 o’clock and a minute counter at 9 o’clock. These features are coupled with large vintage Arabic numerals, a seconds scale, a tachymeter scale engraved on the bezel and a date window located at half past four. Both models are attached to a rubber strap evoking the 1960s Dunlop racing tyre tread.

35th Mille Miglia The latest edition featured an official cast of 440 classic cars built before 1957 representing 36 different countries across five continents. The drivers crossed half of Italy over a period of four days, passing by cities like Padua, Ferrara, Ravena and Perugia. For the occasion, Chopard, which has been the official timekeeper of the rally since 1998, created the Mille Miglia Race Edition, a series of 1,000 pieces distinguished by their 44 mm steel case, their dial with “bouchonné” finishing and their counters inspired by the dashboards of the time.
Meanwhile, the two models for her are virtually the same, although with some obvious differences. The “all black” look gives way to a radiant white that is expressed differently on both references: while one has a dial with a sunburst finish, the other features a motherof-pearl dial accompanied by 51 set diamonds. Both of them have a contained 39 mm diameter. As for the mechanics, the four new models are equipped the calibre ETA 2894-2, a self-winding movement that beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and builds up a 42-hour power reserve. A TOP-CLASS BODY AND ENGINE To commemorate this anniversary, Chopard has also released the Mille Miglia Classic XL 90th Anniversary Limited Edition, the most exclusive piece in the collection so far. Its elegance is reminiscent of the greatest automotive legends that have taken part in the race over the years: the profile of a Ferrari 250 GTO, the taut lines of an Alfa Romeo 6C, the sensuality of an Aston Martin and the manufacturing quality of a Porsche 550 RS – ingredients that give this stunning automatic chronograph a style that is both sporty and chic. It is equipped with a rose gold body measuring 46 mm in diameter that is full of details: the push-buttons, inspired by pistons, are indispensable vintage details, as is the large crown, which evokes the shape of a petrol tank cap. Its dial, in strikingly pure white, is distinguished by the large Arabic numerals and the chronograph counters for hours (at 9 o’clock) and minutes (at 3 o’clock), which are accompanied by the seconds subdial located at 6 o’clock. As usual, these features are surrounded by a tachymeter scale that drivers can use to measure speed. Of course, the legend of great automobiles is not only based on their extreme beauty; it is, more than anything, a question of mechanics. In this regard, the watch has the best engine it could have: calibre L.U.C 03.07-L, a hand-winding movement that the company already used for its L.U.C 1963 model released in 2013 in honour of the 50 years that the Scheufele family had been running Chopard. It is a flyback chronograph certified by the COSC, crafted in nickel silver and decorated with the Côtes de Genève motif. It has a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and builds up a power reserve of 60 hours. The piece is completed with a brown calfskin strap.

e’ll tell you briefly who she is; but, what we really care about is answering the following question: What has happened over the past 12 years? Valérie, a fullyfledged Parisian, grew up playing at the shop her father, André Messika, one of the most reputed diamond distributors in the capital of France. She, however, followed another path. She studied marketing and communications at CELSA, a faculty that is part of the Sorbonne, and worked for a while at Chanel before starting to collaborate with her father. She travelled around the world over a four-year period, experiencing the diamond buying and selling business from the inside. She learned a lot, obviously, but what truly excited her was using design to play with and give a new life to the great dame of precious stones. Here is the key: the sediment of her childhood emerged and Valérie Messika knew, perhaps sensed, that she could offer women a new way of understanding luxury. And boy did she! She studied the jewellery industry in-depth and saw that there was something missing among the big names on Place Vendôme and the brands that could be defined as “entry-level”. She was different exactly when she needed to be, just as her father had advised her: “never copy anybody, get inspiration on your own”. Her first creation, called Move, was a resounding success. It was a gold bracelet adorned with three moving diamonds that symbolised the passage of time: past, present and future. Later on, in 2008, Messika came up with the idea for Skinny technology, which allowed the diamonds to be set with nano-springs to give the pieces more elasticity and movement, thus making them more comfortable to wear. From there, Rock & Roll and other glamorous and sensual collections such as My Twin and Glam’Azone have managed to dazzle celebrities like Beyoncé herself.

Sie war genau dort anders, wo sie es sein sollte, genau wie es ihr Vater riet: „Lass dich nicht beeinflussen, kopiere niemanden.“ Ihre erste Kreation mit dem Namen Move war ein großer Erfolg. t was in the late 17th century when Pope Alexander VII awaited the latest demonstration of Italian genius: a night clock, created by brothers Matteo, Petro Tommaso and Giuseppe Campani, which allowed the pontificate to tell time in the dark. Instead of hands, the timepiece had a rotating disc that denoted the hours and fractions of hours illuminated by a candle located behind an aperture in the dial. Three centuries later, revolutionary brands like HYT revealed their own response with an autonomous electricity generation system. Between these two solutions, master watchmakers have even experimented with radioactivity, before implementing less dangerous technologies, always with the aim of being able to show hours and minutes throughout the entire day. RADIUM AND TRITIUM In the early 20th century, watches began their mass migration from pockets to wrists, although the issue of how to easily distinguish the time in the dark remain unresolved. The watch industry was already looking into ways to simplify the production of chronographs and some, like Le Phare, took note and sought out similar opportunities for the minute repeater. If you couldn’t see the time, at least you could hear it. A scientific discovery, however, changed the course of events when in 1896 French physicist Henri Becquerel discovered radioactivity, a property that certain atoms have to provoke and activate others. Two years later, Pierre and Marie Curie isolated radium, the most harmful metal at the time. From that moment, it was possible to produce a luminescent substance. This entailed a big change for the watch industry, which began to coat hands and indexes with this new material. It was used widely until 1963 when Switzerland warned of its danger and strictly regulated its use. Public protest led to watchmakers replacing radium with tritium, which works according to the same physical principles but gives off fewer harmful emissions. Nevertheless, it wasn’t the best solution.

Nanotube technology The dial on Panerai’s LAB-IDTM model has a sandwich structure, where the luminescent structure (blue Super-Luminova) is visible through the openings on the dial denoting the hour markers and the seconds sub-dial. The dial has a coating of carbon nanotubes developed especially to absorb light, thus reducing reflections to a minimum and giving the dial a special deep black look.
POWDER AND RESIN The alternative to radioactive substances is relatively recent. Albert Zeller, whose company RC Tritec produces luminescent materials for watches, began researching alternative methods and in 1992, in collaboration with the Japanese company Nemoto, developed Luminova, an innovative and completely safe means to obtain luminescence. Unlike the substances used before, Luminova crystals absorb energy from UV rays and later release this energy in the form of light when they are in the dark. Luminova quickly became the new standard in the watch industry. Luminescent pigments, which are based on strontium aluminate, are mixed with some 30 resins depending on the required effect and later applied on the dial. This material, which comes readyto-use, can cost up to 43 Swiss francs per gram, which is higher than the price of 18-carat gold. In early 2016, RC Tritec introduced Super-Luminova Grade X1 GL, which is 91% brighter than Super-Luminova, even after 12 hours of not being exposed to light.

To feel refreshed, in the same area you can head to Charco Azul, a natural saltwater pool bestowed by the volcanoes. And to get your fill of charm, go to the small fishing village of La Restinga. Located on the southern tip of the island, it has justifiably earned a reputation among diving enthusiasts for being the gateway to the Marine Reserve of El Mar de Las Calmas, one of the best places in the world to watch underwater life. To be in touch with the divine, head to the town of San Andrés. Here you will find the Garoé Tree, a linden with leaves that were able to collect enough water to supply the Bimbaches, the ancient inhabitants of the island. Lastly, to learn what magic is, stroll through the forests of El Hierro, between La Frontera and Valverde. The wild laurels will leave you agape and speechless. It is needless to say more.

he new range of the Da Vinci collection resumes the path taken by the company after launching the legendary Perpetual Calendar Reference 3750 in 1985. Aesthetically speaking, that watch was defined by the circle, Leonardo Da Vinci’s favourite geometric shape: the case was round, and it had four inner dials and two semi-circular push-buttons. Now, 22 years later, IWC is once again back to curves, including the double-frame bezel with the peripheral groove, thus making the connection between the company’s promising future and glorious past impossible to ignore. LUXURY AUTOMATIC MODELS The Da Vinci family is now welcoming five new members, two of them designed exclusively for women. Let’s start there. The Da Vinci Automatic 36 comes in four versions: one crafted entirely in 18-carat red gold and adorned with diamonds, and three in stainless steel with an alligator strap, one of which also features set diamonds. All of them are characterised by the subtly recessed inner circle dial, the Arabic numerals, the semi-circular crown and the date window located at 6 o’clock. Another element they share is their automatic calibre, the 35111, which beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and builds up a 42-hour power reserve. Secondly, fine watch connoisseurs will enjoy the Da Vinci Automatic Moon Phase, whose three references (red gold, steel and steel with diamonds) retain the 36 mm diameter of the preceding model and are fitted with a silver-plated dial. Since it features the moon phase indication, the designers were required to change the layout of the dial, thus creating a window at 12 o’clock and doing away with the date display. Was it difficult to convince the greatest purists? They didn’t make it easy on us. I remember once, not too many years ago, at a watch exhibition, a man who was with two other people came up to me and said: “you guys, fantastic pens, but watches…”

How did you react? On my wrist I was wearing a mono-pusher chronograph with a clear case-back developed by Minerva. The decoration on the calibre was stunning; in fact, you could almost say that the watch was more beautiful on the inside than on the outside. I took off the watch, I showed it to him and I said: “You think that Montblanc doesn’t know how to make watches?”

What did they say? They looked at it and the three of them turned red. From that moment on there was a turning point, because these people were part of a group that is very influential in Haute Horlogerie in Spain. Montblanc and watchmaking were not conceived as binomial. It’s true that we had this thorn in our side, but nobody doubts that there is something special about the “star” (Montblanc’s logo). The brand has a prestige that has been integrated into and transmitted to all product categories.

How did they do it? Think about this: if we work with leather in Italy with the best, and writing with the Germans, who are the best, the logical thing is that for making watches we would seek out the best, who are in Switzerland. Jérôme Lambert is also among the best, without question. The company has made a qualitative leap with him. We worked with LeLocle and with a weapon like Minerva Villeret, but we worked with them independently. He said: “If Minerva is a creative manufacture, why don’t we also develop it in a more affordable sense and take advantage of our industrial capacity?” With what goal? To seek out that watch between 1,800 and 3,500 euros to create a cross-cutting category within the market. Did we need to rule out making 100,000 euro watches? Did we need to do away with 1,000 [euro] watches? No; we could manage to do it all without isolating either of the two manufactures. This is where Mr Lambert was very wise. Have things been going well with this price range? Yes, totally. People have really valued the effort we’ve made at a technical level. We’ve been experiencing double digit growth for the past three years, even with the Swiss watch industry having undergone a 16% reduction in exports. Lines like Heritage Chronometrie must have been a turning point. Definitely! Through it, we’ve structured the entire collection very well. Heritage Chronometrie is a bit more classic, and as a bridge between this one and the brand’s sportier side, which is the TimeWalker, we have the 4810, a modern line with incredible finishes and a significant range of functions, from the date indication to the ExoTourbillon.

The big star of SIHH was the TimeWalker collection, with its racing look and Minerva calibres. Is it bad news for staying in this price range you mentioned earlier? No, no. There are only two watches that have a Minerva calibre, and the rest is within the price range we had. Minerva was a factory of chronographs that were used for everything: horse races, car races, even doctors used them. We readapted this legacy to boost the TimeWalker models, which perhaps required a bit of freshness. It’s something that gives us legitimacy and gives us this sporty air that we had lost somewhat. You’ve even dared with a smartwatch, the Summit Collection. We cannot turn our backs on digitalisation; we have to adapt. To do so, we’ve looked for a Swiss supplier of cases, software made by Google in Silicon Valley and a factory to assemble the machinery in China. The golden triangle, if you will!

A sweet that says it all Bienmesabe (literally “tastes good to me�) is a sort of almond custard that is one of the most delicious dishes that can be made with almonds. It is a traditional recipe from the island of La Palma dating back to the time when the archipelago was conquered (15th century), although it is the Gran Canaria municipality of Tejeda which has recently made it famous. It is most likely an adaptation of the confectionary from Southern Spain like the Antequera bienmesabe, which in turn is taken from Arab traditions. It is made out of sugar, almonds, egg yolk and cinnamon.

his wonder of nature reaches its peak between January and March, when tens of thousands of almond trees scattered around the mid-mountains and summits of Gran Canaria come into bloom. Each tree adds its brushstroke to the stunning canvas that, during this period, stretches across Tejeda, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Artenara, Valsequillo, the head of the Valle de Agaete, Barranco de Guayadeque and various spots around San Mateo and Santa Brígida. At this time of year, nature spreads out a white mantle, the predominant colour of the almond tree’s delicate flowers, enhanced with gentle pink tones. That is how it was painted in 1890 by Vincent Van Gogh in his famous work Blossoming Almond Tree, which is also marked by the bright blue sky serving as the background. There are, however, phenomena that happen even to the greatest geniuses of our time. On Gran Canaria, the spectacle of the blossoming almond tree is not enclosed by the four walls of a museum, but instead takes place on the island’s alluvial plains, ravines, mountains, escarpments and plains. And it does so by forming pastures where almond trees coexist with large brooms, yellow brooms and Euphorbia balsamifera nearly always inland or in areas bordering Protected Natural Spaces. Nevertheless, despite the hypnotism of the landscape, the real treasure is the fruit. Canary Island almonds are harvested between August and September and are known for their quality and particular flavour, with nuances bestowed by the volcanic substrate of the Gran Canaria soil. They are used to make outstanding sweets like marzipan and pralines, which can be tasted at outdoor markets and workshops organised in the towns of Valsequillo and Tejeda during the Almond in Blossom Festival.

Trotz der magischen Schönheit der Landschaft ist der wahre Schatz der Mandelbäume jedoch ihre Frucht. Die Mandeln werden zwischen August und September geerntet. Die kanarischen Mandeln sind für ihre Qualität und den besonderen Geschmack bekannt, der einen Hauch des vulkanischen Bodens bewahrt. Daraus entstehen köstliche Süßigkeiten wie Marzipan und Pralinen, die man auf Märkten und bei den Vorführungen probieren kann, die während des Mandelblütenfests in Orten wie Valsequillo und Tejeda veranstaltet werden.

48 minutes of recognition The repertoire of Alfredo Kraus was no greater than 25 titles; in fact, he omitted operas like The Barber of Seville because we was not satisfied with the results. His technique of sustaining the voice in the mask endowed him with unmatched perfection and at the same time was quite wearing. The audience always appreciated the quality of his voice, especially at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, where he received a 48-minute ovation after his performance of Vincenzo Bellini’s I Puritani.

ompletely seized by emotion, Alfredo Kraus felt grateful while he stood at the doors of the auditorium that his hometown would dedicate to him in 1997. Here he would perform his last recital two years later, in a symphony hall with room for 1,600 spectators which, according to the artist himself, was too big “for the size of the human voice”. He was never a divo, although the conditions were there to have been one. He had a strong and penetrating voice that was clean, elastic and firm. He was able to change registers with admirable uniformity, and he managed to truly delight the public. Kraus was born in 1927 in Las Palmas, a bustling city, a crossroads and mix of cultures. He was the son of Otto Kraus, a Viennese journalist based on the island, and Josefa Trujillo. His family did not have a musical background, but, like his siblings, he sang in school and amateur choirs from the time he was little. He studied to become an industrial technician as recommended by his father, although immediately after earning his qualifications, he decided to fully devote himself to singing. He was brave. He went to Barcelona by himself in 1948 to study with the famous instructor Gali Markoff, and later on, in 1955, he moved to Milan to work with Mercedes Llopart, a Spanish soprano with whom he would perfect his technique. His professional debut arrived on 16 January 1956 at the Royal Opera of Cairo, where he would play the Duke of Massenet in Verdi’s Rigoletto, one of the most emblematic characters of his career along with Jules Massenet’s Werther. That performance would lead to contracts with Venice (La Traviata), Turin, Madrid (Doña Francisquita at the Zarzuela theatre), Barcelona (Rigoletto and Lucia di Lammermoor at the Liceu) and Seville (Los pescadores de perlas). His career was taking off, and the great bel canto divas like Renata Escoto competed to share the stage with him. Nevertheless, his international acclaim came at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon alongside Maria Callas in 1958. There is a live recording of that Traviata, which was filmed by a follower of the great diva. It meant a lot to a young singer who was just starting his career.

The spectacular CGHH, which is located in Meyrin, is now fully prepared to fulfil its primary purpose: to cultivate excellence in the industry and to become a machine to create new ideas to feed Richemont, one of the leading players in the sector. To do so, it has five buildings spread over an area of 45,000 m2 and more than 1,000 employees. Training, R&D and innovation coexist alongside administration and manufacturing activities and initiatives to preserve and promote watchmaking technique and artistic crafts in a fully functional ecosystem that has, among other facilities, a large auditorium and a never-ending bookshop. Brands such as Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Roger Dubuis, Vacheron Constantin and Van Cleef & Arpels have already moved some of their activities to the site. TRANSMISSION OF KNOWLEDGE The cornerstone of the CGHH is the Ecole des Métiers et Artisans de Haute Horlogerie. It is a centre of learning devoted to the transmission of watchmaking knowhow and skills. It currently offers several (officially certified) professional training courses, refresher courses and introductory courses, in addition to assessments and certifications in watchmaking skills, micrometrics and artistic crafts. There are currently 32 students enrolled who receive support from brands like Piaget, Panerai and Roger Dubuis. It is expected that by 2020, the school will have around 50 students and seven instructors and that there will be 20 new graduates every year.

You can also enjoy its traditional Jägertee (hunters’ tea) and its gourmet restaurants. The end of the war in Italy If you pass by Ascona, it is more than advisable to stop on the way to eat at the restaurant La Casetta at Hotel Eden Roc, located on a lovely little island. It has an irresistible selection of pasta and fish (primarily grilled). But watch out, that’s not its only claim to fame. If you are a history buff, you know that this was the location of important meetings between the allies and high German officials to put an end to World War II fighting in Italy.

Located in Lower Engadine, it is known for the traditional Swiss tale Schellenursli. It is located 1,600 metres above sea level and has a beautiful historical centre, probably the best preserved in Switzerland. Lavertezzo Nestled in a stunning valley, this tiny village has become well-known because of its thermal baths created by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. It is ideal for hiking lovers and also features attractions such as the Zervreila dam.
This tiny village, with its rough composition, is located in the canton of Tesino and is known by locals as Vertezz. Its main attractions include the stone bridge and the church of Saint Mary of the Angels. Das kleine Dörfchen mit seinen zahlreichen typischen Steinhäusern liegt im Kanton Tessin und wird von den Einheimischen Vertezz genannt. Zu seinen Sehenswürdigkeiten zählen die Steinbrücke Ponte dei Salti und die Pfarrkirche Madonna degli Angeli.
Der in einem malerischen Tal liegende Ort wurde durch seine überwältigende Therme bekannt, die von dem Schweizer Architekten Peter Zumthor entworfen wurde. Vor allem für Wanderer geeignet lockt die Region mit weiteren Sehenswürdigkeiten wie dem Zervreilasee.
It is part of the commune of Graubuden and is considered one of the country’s gems. Its main interest is the ruins of the Steinberg Castle. From here, you can hike to Guarda, just over 7 km away. Ardez gehört zum Kanton Graubünden und gilt als einer der Schätze des Landes. Zu den bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten gehört die Ruine der Burg Steinsberg. Von hier aus gibt es einen etwas mehr als 7 Kilometer langen Wanderweg nach Guarda.
