La experiencia que acumulamos tras 40 años dedicándonos al mundo de la alta relojería y joyería nos ayuda a crear una revista cada vez mejor. Les presentamos la tercera edición de Saphir Joyeros: más reposada, profunda y completa que las anteriores. Confíen en nosotros, y si no, al menos escuchen la recomendación de los más sabios: “Vieja madera para arder, viejo vino para beber, viejos amigos en quien confiar, y viejos autores para leer” (Sir. Francis Bacon, filósofo y estadista británico).

A los más expertos, aunque utilizando un lenguaje lo suficientemente sencillo como para enamorar también a los neófitos, les dedicamos una selección de relojes y joyas pertenecientes a las firmas de más prestigio internacional.

También forman parte del contenido técnico de la revista los reportajes sobre la nueva colección de Cartier y el desafío del Rolex Deep Sea, así como también la entrevista a Javier Novo, el responsable de Franck Muller España.

Evidentemente, también tienen un peso importante los artículos de estilo de vida. En esta ocasión, contamos con un invitado de lujo: el escritor valenciano Joaquín Camps, cuya opera prima, La última confidencia del escritor Hugo Mendoza, tiene pinta de convertirse en un éxito de ventas.

También disfrutarán los que tienen alma de viajero, puesto que les invitamos a acometer la aventura de visitar las Islas Cook.

The experience we have gained after 40 years devoted to the world of fine watchmaking and jewellery helps us create an increasingly better magazine. We present you with the third edition of Saphir Joyeros: more relaxed, in-depth and comprehensive than the previous editions. Trust us, and if not, at least heed the recommendation of one of the wisest: “Old wood to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust and old authors to read” (Sir. Francis Bacon, British philosopher and statesman).

To the most seasoned, although using language simple enough to also seduce the neophytes, we dedicate a section on watches and jewellery made by the most internationallyrenowned firms.

The technical content of the magazine also includes the reports on the new collection by Cartier and the endeavour of Rolex Deep Sea, in addition to the interview with Javier Novo, the head of Franck Muller Spain.

The articles on lifestyle also obviously have a prominent position. On this occasion, we had a special guest: Valencian writer Joaquín Camps, whose debut novel, The Last Confidence of the Writer Hugo Mendoza, seems set to become a bestseller.

Those with a travelling spirit will also enjoy the magazine, as we invite them to undertake the adventure of visiting the Cook Islands. To lovers of good food, we explain the revolution of Alain Ducasse; and to those who love TV series, we remind you not to miss The Wire. Don’t worry, we won’t ruin the end.

No matter what the added value is, that fact is that there are some amazing airfields. Number 1, voted the best in the world in the recent 2014 World Airport Awards, is the Changi Airport in Singapore. Built in 1981, it employs over 28,000 people and receives more than 50 million passengers every year.

Its designers talk more about a travel experience in and of itself. It has a swimming pool, a cinema, a multimedia centre, a playground and even a spectacular themed garden devoted to butterflies.

Another of its main attractions is The Social Tree made out of highdefinition screens, which is an interactive digital installation that allows travellers to share experiences through videos and photos.

In second place is the Incheon Airport in Seoul, one of the most advanced from a technological standpoint. Among other things, it has an excellent observation deck for watching takeoffs and

otras cosas, cuenta con un buen observatorio donde contemplar los despegues y aterrizajes de los aviones o el Korean Cultural Street, un lugar muy interesante para conocer de cerca la cultura tradicional coreana y sus construcciones.

Completa el podio el aeropuerto de Schiphol, situado a 15 Km de Amsterdam. Acoge una gran cantidad de vuelos intercontinentales, sobretodo a América del Norte. Su oferta de ocio es amplísima: para los más inquietos, dispone de una biblioteca y de una exhibición permanente de obras que pertenecen al Rijkmuseum. Por otro lado, los más diletantes podrán disfrutar de un casino, un spa y del Airport Park, un espacio interior donde tomar el sol y relajarse.

También destaca el Aeropuerto de Hong Kong, conocido como Chek Lap Kok. Está construido sobre una isla homónima muy pequeña y diseñado por Norman Foster. Es un icono arquitectónico y uno de los proyectos de ingeniería más caros de la historia.

Otro de los que cuenta con interesantes atracciones es el Aeropuerto Internacional de Beijing. Es un complejo espectacular, del que sobresale la Terminal 3 (remodelada en 2008, con motivo de los JJOO). Está cubierta por una gigantesca estructura metálica de color rojo y cuenta con algunos elementos decorativos típicos de la cultura china: unas tallas que imitan el Muro de los Nueve Dragones o los vergeles interiores que recrean los jardines imperiales.

Para finalizar, no se pierdan el biergärten del aeropuerto Franz Josef Strauss (Munich), una explanada arbolada en la que es posible degustar la afamada cerveza bávara; o el Aeropuerto Internacional de Vancouver, que tiene una interesante colección de arte autóctono y una buena muestra de la flora y fauna locales.

Además, los calibres que portan este sello se distinguen también por su decorado y acabados.

Por otro lado, tenemos el Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, el célebre COSC. Nació en 1973, no tiene ánimo de lucro y trabaja exclusivamente para la industria relojera suiza. En sus tres laboratorios oficiales (Bienne, Ginebra y Le Locle), este organismo se encarga de someter a pruebas de precisión a los movimientos con los que trabajan los fabricantes. Experiencias Compartidas Las ‘Bodas de Plata’ de la pesca de altura El Club de Yates Pasito Blanco, situado a tan solo 2 km del centro turístico de Maspalomas, acogió la 25º edición del Concurso de Pesca de Altura Pasito Blanco, que este año ha batido un nuevo récord de capturas en los dos días de competición, con un total de 30 marcajes.

No solo eso, ya que el certamen, justamente ahora que celebraba sus ‘Bodas de Plata’, también ha batido récords de participación, con 35 embarcaciones a la búsqueda del ya célebre blue marlin.

El concurso duró dos días y se disputó bajo la modalidad de marca y suelta. Los ganadores han sido los tripulantes del Faelo, un barco armado por José Barbosa y con base en el Puerto Deportivo de Pasito Blanco. Se subían a lo más alto del podio tras marcar en la primera jornada dos blue marlin y uno blanco y cerrar la competición el segundo día con un picudo azul, lo que les permitió sumar un total de 1.250 puntos.

En segundo lugar se clasificó, ‘in extremis’, el Bocinegro, de Jason Pipe, que logró picar un blue marlin poco antes de las 17.30 horas, que a la postre le daría la plata. El barco con base en La Gomera se estrenaba en el campeonato el primer día capturando dos white marlin, a los que añadía uno azul en la última jornada, acumulando un total de 500 puntos.

El Hedonist cerraba el podio de esta 25º edición del Concurso de Pesca de Pasito Blanco. La captura de un picudo azul y uno blanco en la primera jornada le daba el bronce al barco de Manuel Ramírez, empatado a 450 puntos con el Reel Escape, de Puerto Rico, y el Cavalier, de Hafid. La embarcación de Ramírez se colocaba por delante debido al criterio horario que rige las normas del campeonato, que especifica que a igual puntuación, el desempate se desenvuelve a favor del barco que primero hizo la captura.

Saphir Joyeros es uno de los principales patrocinadores del evento y además contribuye con el Premio Memorial Alfonso Viera (un reloj Rolex), otorgado al barco que gane dos años consecutivos o 3 años alternos.

Catching a blue marlin and a white one on the first day won the bronze for Manuel Ramírez’s boat, tying at 450 points with Reel Escape from Puerto Rico and El Cavalier from Hafid. Ramírez’s vessel came out ahead due to the timing criterion governing the rules of the championship, which specify that when there is an equal score, the tie will be broken in favour of the boat which made the first catch.

Saphir Joyeros is one of the main sponsors of the event and also contributes with the Alfonso Viera Memorial Prize (a Rolex watch) awarded to the boat that wins two years in a row or three alternating years.

implemente, me di cuenta que me lo pasaba muy bien escribiendo. ¿Cómo surgió esta trama de misterio que tanto está atrapando al lector?

De una forma muy casual, estando en el aeropuerto de Bergamo por un tema de trabajo. Me vino a la cabeza una idea un poco mágica, una especie de iluminación, lo que los americanos llaman insight. Lo anoté, lo dejé reposar un par de meses y cuando lo retomé me dediqué a armar una buena estructura. ¡Vi que tenía potencial! ¿Por qué lo hizo así?

Creo que para sacarle el máximo rendimiento a una idea creativa hay que dejarla sedimentar. Por eso no me precipité y tampoco caí en la tentación insana de ponerme inmediatamente a plasmar en papel mi idea.

Y luego llegó una nueva aventura: publicarla.

Soy atrevido, pero no un loco. Sé cómo está el mundo editorial y me fui a buscar directamente a Lola Gulias, la agente literaria de María Dueñas, porque prefería que el ‘no’ viniera de alguien con muchos conocimiento. Sorprendentemente, le envié las primeras 90 páginas y enseguida me pidió el resto. ¿Qué le dijo ella?

“Una novela como esta solo quiero moverla entre las más grandes”. Es un sueño, no me esperaba que fuese así de bien.

Pues ha aprovechado la ocasión, la novela tiene casi 800 páginas.

Bueno, hay novelas de 150 páginas que se me hacen eternas y que abandono sin llegar al final; otras en cambio tienen 1000

I simply realised that I had a good time writing.

How did you come up with this mystery plot so good at drawing the reader in?

Very coincidently, while I was at Bergamo Airport for a work matter. I suddenly came up with a slightly magical idea, a sort of enlightenment, what the Americans call insight. I wrote it down, I let it sit for a couple of months, and when I took it up again, I began putting together a good structure. I saw that it had potential!

Why did you do it like that?

I think that to get the most out of a creative idea you have to let it sit. That’s why I didn’t rush or succumb to the ridiculous temptation to immediately put my idea down on paper.

And then came a new adventure: getting it published.

I’m daring, but not crazy. I know what the publishing world is like and went directly to find Lola Gulias, María Dueñas’ literary agent, because I preferred to hear “no” from someone who knew a lot.

Surprisingly, I sent her the first 90 pages and she immediately asked me for the rest.

What did she say?

“A novel like this one I only want to move among the big ones.” It’s a dream; I didn’t expect it to be this good.

You sure took advantage of the occasion; the novel has nearly 800 pages.

Well, there are novels with 150 pages that never seem to end and that I leave unfinished, while there are others with 1,000 pages and when I turn the last one I shed a couple of tears because I think: “If it only had 500 more!”.

Cuando doy clase pierdo la noción del tiempo porque me lo paso muy bien, y eso es justamente lo que me ha ocurrido escribiendo.

Más de una vez se me han hecho las tres de la mañana y me he preguntado: “¿qué haces aún despierto?”. ¿Sabía alguien de su entorno que estaba usted trabajando en una novela?

Se lo tuve que contar a mi novia porque no le hacía caso los fines de semana…pero a parte de ella, no lo sabía nadie. Lo que si me guardé solo para mí fue el acuerdo con la Editorial Planeta.

Disfruté en la intimidad de la escritura y el tema de la publicación quería vivirlo sólo para después darle la noticia a todo el mundo. ¿Recuerda cómo lo contó?

Sí, lo hice el día de Navidad. La familia pasó de 0 a 100 en un instante y esa aceleración fue tremenda. Si yo hubiese estado durante todo el año dando cuentas de todo lo que hacía, ahora se la envío, ahora me reúno…no hubiera sido tan bonito.

Una curiosidad: ¿es cierto que los personajes cobran vida propia?

Pues no es un tópico, ¡es verdad! Yo lo tenía todo muy bien trazado y conforme iba escribiendo tenía que ser más flexible y darle cancha a algunos personajes.

No sea políticamente correcto: de entre todos ellos, ¿cuál le gusta más?

Me encanta Paloma por lo gamberra que es, y aunque sea un poco freudiano, es una persona con la que me iría de marcha muy a gusto. Además, igual que le ocurre a Víctor, ella sufre un proceso de evolución personal a lo largo de la novela. He hecho muchos esfuerzos para hacer entender al lector que aunque todos tenemos personalidades muy estables, los ‘golpes’ que nos da la vida nos pueden cambiar. La verdad, ¡me ha costado despedirme de Paloma!

Did anyone around you know that you were working on a novel?

I had to tell my girlfriend, because I ignored her at the weekends... but apart from her, no one knew. What I did keep just to myself was the agreement with Editorial Planeta. I enjoyed the intimacy of writing, and I wanted to experience the matter of publication alone and later give the news to everyone.

Do you remember how you told the news?

Yes, I did it on Christmas Day. My family went from 0 to 100 in an instant and that acceleration was incredible. If I had been explaining everything I did throughout the year (now I’m sending it to them, now I have a meeting…), it wouldn’t have been so nice.

A question: is it true that the characters come to life?

Well it’s not a cliché, it’s true! I had it all well outlined, and while I was writing, I had to be more flexible and give some characters a bigger playing field.

Don’t be politically correct: of all of them, which do you like best?

I love Paloma, because she’s such a troublemaker, and even though it’s a bit Freudian, she’s a person who I’d really like to go out on the town with. Moreover, just like Víctor, she undergoes a process of personal development throughout the novel. I’ve worked very hard to make the reader understand that although we all have very stable personalities, the “blows” we receive from life can change us. Actually, it was difficult for me to say goodbye to Paloma!

Su compatriota Joel Robuchon, por ejemplo, elaboró su último menú junto a la neurofarmacóloga Nadia Wolf, quien sostiene que determinadas recetas son capaces de modificar la química del cerebro. Ambos llegaron a la conclusión que si sufre de un ataque de ansiedad podría solucionarlo comiendo una pechuga de pato ahumado con remolacha, cebolla y aceite de nuez. ¡Sorprendente!

The watchmakers sought to achieve extremely slim finishes for all components, whether for the cannon-pinion (0.12 mm), the barrel staff (0.115 mm), or the chronograph gear finger (0.06 mm), as well as finesse for the dial, the hand fittings and the glass fastening.

Sin embargo, hay una importante diferencia: complementa dicha “llave” con un diseño de la carrura que aporta una geometría original e innovadora.

Queda patente en las imágenes que la caja del reloj no es circular, más bien tiene forma de un pseudocojín. Como es habitual en ellos, los diseñadores de Cartier han tenido muy en cuenta la arquitectura y las cualidades volumétricas del reloj y han creado para la ocasión un perfil arqueado, fluido y muy ergonómico.

Esa combinación de asas prolongadas en todo el eje vertical con el círculo de la esfera es un clásico de los relojes de pulsera. La diferencia en este Clé es cómo las líneas conforman la caja para adaptarse a la muñeca, hasta el punto que los 40 mm de diámetro parecen incluso más pequeños -algo a lo que también contribuye el bisel, liso y redondeado.

n the previous edition of the magazine, we discussed the historical Tank, which was created in 1917 and has over the years become an emblem of the firm. Now we are resuming this path to talk to you about the new Clé, whose design manages to show the company’s potential in creating contemporary watches with classic tinges.

Just like it did with the Ballon Bleu, the Clé strikes one’s attention with the design of the crown, which is key-shaped (in French, “clé” means key) and is used to adjust the same settings as those on a conventional watch. However, there is a significant difference: this “key” is complemented with a case middle design that makes for an original and innovative geometry.

It is evident in the images that the watch case is not circular, but rather has a pillow-like shape. As is usual for them, the designers at Cartier were very conscientious of the architecture and volumetric qualities of the watch and have created for the occasion an arched, smooth and very ergonomic profile.

This combination of elongated lugs extending around the circle of the dial is a classic look for wristwatches. The difference in this Clé is how the lines shape the case to fit the wrist, to the point that the 40 mm of the diameter even seem smaller –which is also aided by the smooth, rounded bezel–.

The slightly softened curved shapes ensure that it rests perfectly on the wrist.

The crown, its big secret Cartier has a long history in creating innovative crowns, and the Clé collection firmly embraces this legacy. This time it is not only one of the defining features of the watch, but also the inspiration for its name. “Clé” means key in French, and the crown unmistakably resembles a key.

The act of resetting the time and date introduces a new gesture to the world of watchmaking, a gesture that recalls the turning of a key to wind up a clock, as was done before.

With it, the Germany company has finally achieved a dream it has been pursuing since 2008, when it launched “Project i” with the goal of reinventing urban mobility. These two systems combine to accelerate the BMW i8 from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, with fuel consumption of just 2.1 litres per 100 km and CO2 emissions of 49 g/km.

as dos empresas han trabajado mano a mano con el maestro Roberto Totti, uno de los gurús en el campo de la transformación de motos. El italiano ha partido de la base de la Ducati Diavel Carbon para crear la Ducati Black Shield, que incorpora los códigos estéticos de un reloj creado por Tudor.

Os hablamos nada menos que del Fastrider Black Shield, un cronógrafo que destaca por su caja monobloque de cerámica en negro mate. Es un cuerpo prácticamente imposible de rayar, pero ¿cuál es su particularidad? he two companies worked closely with Roberto Totti, one of the gurus in the field of motorcycle customisation. The Italian started with the Ducati Diavel Carbon as a base to create the Ducati Black Shield, which uses the design codes of a watch created by Tudor.

The watch is the Fastrider Black Shield, a chronograph that stands out with its ceramic monobloc case in matte black.
