Some historians believe APRIL FOOLS’ DAY — as we know it today — originated in France in the 16th century, around the adoption of the Gregorian calendar. The new calendar moved New Year’s Day from April 1st to January 1st. But not everyone was immediate in adjusting to the new custom, and those who still celebrated the new year on April 1st were teased as being “April fools” and had tricks played on them by others.

e’re heading into high-PCS season, and there’s a lot for parents to think about.

Switching schools can be difficult, but Eglin’s School Liason, Elaine LaJeunesse says the key is to get organized before moving. She’s put together a checklist for parents to help make the transition as seamless as possible. Parents should also be aware of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3). The MIC3 was created to support successful education transitions for mobile military students. All fifty states, including the District of Columbia, are members of the compact, which applies to public schools and DoDEA schools kindergarten through 12th grade. MIC3 covers children of Active Duty members, including the National Guard and Reserves under Active Duty Title 10 orders.

“PCSing can be stressful for families, but you are not alone when it comes to getting your children settled into a new school,” LaJeunesse says. “A solid plan will help you chart your way to success, and utilizing the MIC3 will empower you with the knowledge you need in making informed decisions.”

Elaine Lajeunesse, Team Eglin School Liaison

Here’s what the MIC3 covers: • Enrollment • Educational records, immunizations, Kindergarten and First Grade entrance age. • Placement & Attendance • Course and educational program placement, special education services, placement flexibility, and absence related to deployment activities. • Eligibility • Eligibility for student enrollment and extracurricular participation. • Graduation • Flexibility in accepting state exit or end-of-course exams, national achievement tests, or alternative testing in lieu of testing requirements for graduation in the receiving state. • Waiving courses required for graduation if similar course work has been completed • Allowing a student to receive a diploma from the sending school instead of the receiving school. To learn more about the Compact visit the Interstate Commission’s website at www.MIC3.net. If you’d like to make a positive difference in a child’s life, please contact Team Eglin’s School Liaison: Elaine LaJeunesse | 850-882-4319 elaine.lajeunesse@us.af.mil | eglinlife.com/slo

OUR FIRST CUSTOMER recently returned from deployment and had this to say about her experience with the Deployed Car Care Program:

Gene [the manager] took really good care of my car while I was gone. He contacted my coworkers when something was wrong with the battery, then researched how to replace a Mini Cooper battery and fixed it! It was a stress-free process for me. When I came back, Gene told me about a few other issues he'd found but couldn't address. So now I can take the car to a dealership to have them looked at. It was a great deal at $40 a month for an E-5. I would not have known what to do with my car had this program not been here.

— Sarah K.

The Deployed Car Care Program offers military members the advantage of these services during their deployment: • Locked & Secure Storage Spaces (30 available) • Pre-Inspection to Identify Any Vehicle Issues with estimates provided for repairs, which can be completed during deployment • Weekly Walk-Around of the vehicle • Weekly Engine Start to reach operating temperature • More Thorough Weekly Inspections including battery, tire, A/C and system checks • Bi-Weekly Drive of the Vehicle in the Auto Hobby parking area • Final Inspection before pick-up • And lastly — A Car Wash!
