Tickets Now on Sale

The Downtown Tyler Film Festival is pleased to announce that tickets for the September 27th-30th event are now on sale at TylerFilmFest.com.

The daily pass for Wednesday-Friday is only $5. Saturday night’s “Best of the Fest,” which includes food and drinks at the postparty, is $10. The Producer’s all-access pass is available for only $20.

Tickets in advance are available at LibertyTyler.com or in person beginning September 9th at the Gallery Main St., 110 W. Erwin St., Downtown Tyler. On every festival night, the box office will open at 6:30pm.

A celebration of storytelling through film, the Downtown Tyler Film Festival has grown to be an international film festival comprised of short films from around the world; England, Spain, Iran, and more. The festival also seeks to encourage locally made Texas independent films.

All entries are 15 minutes or less and represent a variety of genres including comedy, drama, documentary, and science fiction. Thursday night will feature the work of numerous young filmmakers, students under the age of 18.

The top short films from each night will be re-shown in the “Best of the Fest” screening on Saturday night. Contest winners will be announced and will receive cash prizes.

Currently, last year’s Film Festival winner’s films are available to view on the TylerFilmFest.com for free.

Please note that some films feature mature content.

The studio also encourages folks to bring in their own designs and visions, as Tiller recalls the studio creating a popsicle bank and a fish coffin for a dearly departed pet. “If you can dream it, we can help create it,” she said.

Come learn and have an adventure in art plus have some fun in the process at Piddlin’ Pottery Creative Arts Center.

The studio is open seven days a week: Monday-Wednesday 10am-6pm, ThursdayFriday 10am-8pm, Saturday 10am-6pm, and Sundays 1-6pm.

Summer Fun in the Water at Tyler Paddle

By Holli Fourniquet Summer days in East Texas are best spent out on the lake. There’s no better place for a quiet afternoon of recreation than out at Tyler Paddle.

Tyler Paddle is a standup paddleboard rental company located at 15898 Eastside Rd., Tyler, right beside the Lake Tyler Petroleum Club. This is a beautiful part of the lake for standup paddle boarding.

Standup paddle boarding is not as hard as it looks. In fact, you can stand up or sit down if you get tired. There is some balanced involved, but it’s definitely a fun sport to try with the family.

Tyler Paddle offers events throughout the summer including standup paddle yoga, full moon paddles, and sunset paddles.

Paddleboards are rented individually for $25 per hour, or there is a large paddleboard that fits six people available for $75 hour.

Tyler Paddle also offers party rentals. If you are hosting an event on the water around the

Tyler area, they will even come to you or you can go to them. Your family and friends could rent out all of the boards, pack a picnic lunch, and spend the afternoon on the water. Tyler paddle will customize any party package to fit your needs and budget.

Tyler Paddle’s regular hours are Fridays 5-8pm, and Saturdays and Sundays 12 noon7pm or by appointment.

If you haven’t tried standup paddle boarding, this is the summer to try something new.

Unwind after a busy week and paddle off into the sunset for an amazing adventure you’ll never forget.

Sylvia Morse, a talented local jewelry designer and artist who is an instructor at Tyler Junior College, teaches unique classes at the studio, including copper enameling, which is an intricate, heat-driven process that produces stunning results. The classes generally cost $45 and last 2 ½ hours, start to finish.

The studio also provides all materials, including glove, goggles, and other safety gear as required. Starting with a simple square of copper, Sylvia leads her class through the process, including cutting a design, texturing the piece, and then adding glass rods and chunks of color. When adding the propane torch to the piece, it comes alive, first red-hot then cooling to variations and striations of vivid color.

“It’s really a give and take process,” says Morse. “We all inspire and learn from each other.” Morse also teaches in clay and metal

Music The Outbound Train: Honky Tonkin’ Around Town

By Johnny Griffith There is a soundtrack to Americana that plays in our brains as we consider certain times and places. Always, without fail, in my head when I think about rural America in the 30’s and 40’s, nothing epitomizes that time period and the life of the common man more than Hank Williams Sr. His direct, everyman lyrics along with driving, simple tunes dialed into the soul of the working class at that time and has been influential to many artists since. One of the local artists heavily influenced by this accessible style of music has blended it with other genres to deliver a raw, straightforward, rock-a-billy set of music that has locals tapping their feet, dancing along, and enjoying the stripped down sounds of Allen Wayne Nichols and The Outbound Train.

Born and raised in East Longview, Nichols attended Hallsville schools and was raised on country music. As he aged, Allen found a love for skateboarding and got turned on to punk and metal at local backyard half-pipes. After his dad purchased a bass guitar for Nichols, he took a few lessons and started jamming with friends from skateboarding. This early repertoire included tunes from the Sex-Pistols, The Doors, as well as some original music.

Fast forward to the present and Nichols is not only a working musician, he’s an accomplished tattoo artist and was one of the co-proprietors of 3rd Street Art in Longview before taking the time to be more flexible with music.

After calling on a childhood acquaintance and a connection from another music project, The Outbound Train was formed and has been playing shows all over East Texas. In addition to a recent gig at ETX Brewing Co. in Tyler, The Outbound Train has been playing in Austin and

Dallas as they broaden their base of fans.

Make no mistake, The Outbound Train won’t be mistaken for an easily digestible pop country or radio rock. This is in-your-face, nofrills, working class music that is long on substance and short on fluff. With a driving beat, the smooth low end of an upright bass, and the compact melodies of Nichols on the guitar and vocals, The Outbound Train is a throwback that you can honky tonk with all night long.

Recently I caught Allen in between trips to Austin and asked him a few questions about this latest project: Johnny: Let’s start with who’s in the band besides yourself. Who’s aboard The Outbound Train?

Allen: The rest of the band members are Doghouse Dave Stopani on upright bass and Kevin Blalock on percussion.

Johnny: How did the band meet?

Allen: I've known Kevin since we were kids.

I was in a punk band, and he was in a metal band. We would play shows supporting each other, but it's kinda crazy that this is the first project we’ve worked on together. My friend David Smith recommended Doghouse when we were looking for an upright player for Lulu and the Black Sheep. Dave fit right in, and when Lulu decided to take a hiatus from music, Dog and I continued to play shows together. When

we added Kevin, The Outbound Train was born. I am grateful for what these dudes bring to the table every show. Playing and traveling with them is fun, and everyone’s down to make stuff happen. We’re like a tight military unit on a mission for fun.

Johnny: What’s the significance of the name?

Allen: We have always had that train sound to our songs, and the band is a vehicle for us to travel and escape the mundane, everyday routine boredom. In that respect, it’s like every show is a train to endless possibilities.

Johnny: In your own words, how would you describe your sound?

Allen: I’ve heard it described many ways, but I call it hillbilly. It’s part Country, part punk, and part bluegrass with a generous helping of honky tonk mixed in to hold it together.

Johnny: Why that style of music? It’s certainly not a style that gets the most real estate on stages around the area. What led you to your sound?

Allen: It’s what comes naturally. Being raised on Country and coming of age with punk, I played in punk bands for years, and most of the music I wrote was just fast loud Country. I still play some of those songs in my set today.

Johnny: Who are some of your significant influences musically?

Allen: Wayne ‘the train’ Hancock, Hank

Williams Sr., Hank Williams the third, Bob Wills, Leadbelly, Scott H. Biram - really all the country, folk-punk, thrash-grass, rockabilly, and blues bands out there have something that we can draw from at some point.

Johnny: What have been some of the challenges of getting The Outbound Train onto stages around East Texas and beyond?

Allen: Our biggest obstacle with booking is not having proper promotional material to send to booking agents that don’t know us.

Also, some venues want three or four hours.

Although we sometimes play those longer gigs, we prefer to bring another band with us to cover longer sets.

Johnny: Who in music (besides The Outbound Train) currently excites you with what they’re doing?

Allen: That’s a hard question to answer simply because we have a great music scene in East Texas, and we all support each other across genres. We love playing on stage, but we get just as excited to sit down and listen to the other local bands in the area that are working hard to put themselves out there.

Johnny: What’s on the horizon for you guys the rest of this year?

Allen: This year we hope to do as much traveling as possible. We also recently recorded five songs, so we’re gonna go back in and produce a full-length CD, hopefully by the end of the year. Family Caldwell Zoo Zooper Days: Education Made Super Duper Fun

Located on 85 beautiful acres in Tyler and longtime a favorite for all ages, Caldwell Zoo has more than 3,400 animals to amaze and educate your whole family. You’ll discover animals roaming over plains, swimming in ponds, or climbing trees in multi-species environments carefully created to represent their natural North American, South American, or East African habitats.

Several unique areas include African Savanna, which features lions, elephants, giraffes, and zebras. In the North American area you will see sleek mountain lions, majestic bald eagles, and roaming bison. Don't forget to visit Tyler and Timber, Caldwell Zoo's black bears.

The South America section offers attractions like the world’s largest rodent, giant anteaters, colorful macaws, and squirrel monkeys.

In the African Aquarium you will find blackfooted penguins, cichlid fish, tortoises, African gray parrots, rock hyrax, and more. The North American Herpetarium is home to an array of fishes, snakes, frogs, and lizards from our continent, in addition to amazing tarantulas from around the globe.

The Wild Bird Walkabout is a favorite place to get up close and personal with a huge variety of birds, both small and big. You can even enjoy a conversation with a parakeet or give a cockatiel a snack. The Wild Bird Walkabout is a free-flight aviary with more than 600 gorgeous birds that you can feed and interact with.

One of Caldwell Zoo’s missions is to preserve and protect animals. As part of that mission the zoo is home to a dozen endangered species including the cheetahs, ring-tailed lemurs, black-footed penguins, and black rhinoceros. In addition to the species listed as endangered, the zoo houses numerous animals that are threatened, where the population is at risk of becoming endangered. Coatis and bald eagles are currently on the list of threatened species.

Small children can enjoy the petting area, which is a kid-friendly spot with sand to play in and tunnels to climb through. A highlight of this area is an old red truck that used to belong to Mr. D. K. Caldwell, the founder of Caldwell Zoo. The truck has been recently refurbished for a second time. It seems that the truck is so loved that the maintenance folks have to fix it rather regularly.

Spreading Love and Happiness Through Rocks A unique and fun group has been created

on Facebook called “Tyler Texas Rocks.” This group paints small rocks with inspirational messages and hides these rocks around town.

April Roycroft, a mom of five, started the “Tyler, Texas Rocks” Facebook group. The mission of the group is to “bring happiness and brighten someone’s day by finding an unexpected piece of joy.”

The stones, with varying designs, are creating quit the buzz. So much so, the Facebook group attracted 3,000 members in its first week. They’re now posting photos of their creations along with clues on where to find them.

“We started hiding rocks around that we had painted and just kind of told people what to do,” said Roycroft.

It’s simple to participate. Just paint, hide, and find rocks in and around Tyler. If you paint and hide a rock, they ask that you use the hashtag #tylertexasrocks.

If you find one, please post a photo to the group of the person who found the rock and the rock you found plus where you found it.

Science Education (CESSE) at TJC have a lot to do this month.

Ticket prices vary depending on activity.

Most shows offer tickets for $5. Tickets for All Day passes are $12 for adults and $9 for students, children, and senior citizens. Individual shows are $7 for adults and $5 for students, children, and senior citizens. Exhibit only is $3. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the front counter or online at sciencecenter. tjc.edu.

The Center for Earth & Space Science Education at TJC is located at 1411 E. Lake St., Tyler. CESSE is open Tuesday-Friday (doors open 9:30am-4:30pm), Saturday (doors open 10am-4:30pm). CESSE is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Along with the ongoing exhibits and productions, these events will take place.

Rock ‘n Roll Saturday Rock ‘n Roll Saturday is fun for the entire family. This month the performance is August 19th. “Rock on Demand” fills the entire 40-foot domed theater with vibrant graphics, completely enveloping visitors in a 360-degree view while the 16,000-watt, digital surround sound system plays rock hits ranging from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to The Doors and Aerosmith. Tickets are $5 for each show.

A Star Party Saturday Ongoing the first Saturday of each month (8pm, 8:30pm, and 9pm), you can see a Star Party in a live presentation in CESSE’s 40-foot planetarium dome. Learn all about the stars, the planets, and the constellations as you take a tour of the night sky and travel to distant planets and beyond. There will also be a TJC astronomy professor with telescopes set up outside (weather permitting) for you to gaze at the astronomical objects with your own eyes until 10pm. Best of all, it is completely free!

Gurney, about empty nesters Greg and Kate who have moved back to Manhattan after 22 years in the suburbs. As Kate tells Greg: “The dog phase of my life is definitely over.” But life has a way of giving you what you think you don’t want. Greg finds Sylvia, a street-smart lab/ poodle mix (played by a female) and brings her home. She promptly becomes a bone of contention between Greg and Kate, testing their marriage to hilarious and touching effect.

Books Summer Reads for July

By Gini Rainey “Healing Tears” by Theresa James In heart-wrenching detail, Theresa James, a U.S. Air Force veteran, recounts the details of her marriage to the father of her children through their eventual divorce and the eventual murder of the children and suicide of her husband. Written primarily to help her work through her grief following the murders, James came away with a book that should serve as a cautionary tale to anyone who is in a relationship with someone who presents any kind of unstable or menacing behavior.

While most authors develop characters that leave their readers with a good visual image, I came away from this book with more of a feeling of the spiritual images of her children, which makes excellent sense considering the circumstances surrounding their deaths and the memories that Theresa still has for them.

Retold with an amazing objectivity, Theresa James unfolds a story of love, insanity, strength, and peace, while sharing the life she lived with her children and their father leading up to and through the tragic events that ultimately destroyed her family – but not her, nor her spirit.

Moore In another one of her convoluted tales, Moore presents a historical fiction novel based on real-life characters who inhabited Lamar Peninsula and Refugio, Texas, starting with a history lesson of how the Spaniards and Danes came to Texas as settlers and immigrants.

Doris Marie Linney Moore, the central character of the book, was orphaned as a child and grew up with a subtle knowledge that something mysterious about her origin was being kept from her.

With a sense of salt air and hot summer days surrounding the various antics of Linney, her siblings, and various cousins, aunts, and uncles who float through her life, you get a true feeling of their carefree days spent playing around the family’s bay house and in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. While this book was almost as convoluted as Moore’s book “Tangled” with lots of characters and intriguing family issues, I found I couldn’t put it down until I finished it because I too, wanted to know what the family secret was. My only regret was that the revelation and resolution was almost anticlimactic compared to the anticipation I had been experiencing.

Lenora keeps herself busy creating and getting her work in front of audiences. Lenora has participated in the Downtown Tyler Wine Swirl art event, and she has had work published in Tyler’s Noise City Zine and the annual TJC Bell Tower Arts Journal. She was commissioned to draw the sheet music cover art for the production of 'Troubadour' in Atlanta, Georgia. Later this year, on October 21st, Lenora will be in Deep Ellum in Dallas, TX displaying and selling artwork for the annual pancakes and booze arts festival.

One Person's Craziness is Another Person's Reality

Lenora mainly works with either acrylic paint or ink. “When I am working with ink, I have a Kuretake no. 50 ink brush pen I use on watercolor paper, or I'll use a variety of Micron brand pens. On a rarer occasion, I might use watercolor paints or sculpt with clay. I paint mainly on canvas and wood,” states the artist.

When asked about her early inspirations Lenora replies, “I've always liked to draw, but even up until high school all I had ever really created were quickly sketched ideas I would hang on the walls of my bedroom. I guess collectively they made a cool collage, but I still didn’t seriously start making art until my second year of college. I knew the style I wanted to draw in, I just had to put in the practice to get there. I was pretty impressed with surrealism throughout my life, so I believe it had an effect on my style. Tim Burton movies like “Alice in Wonderland” and “Coraline” introduced me to alternate worlds of strange characters and scenery and inspired me to create my own. I see all of my paintings and drawings as a culmination of characters from the same weird universe.”

Lenora continues, “The most important thing art has brought to my life is the understanding I will never be as good as I can be.

I can never draw for so long, or paint for so long, I can’t improve any further. There is always a goal, and I’ll never get to a point where there’s nothing left to learn. Being an artist is like reading a really good book series,

but instead of getting to the end and not having anything left but weird dissatisfaction the world you were just invested in is through existing, you can keep reading forever. So in a simpler sense, I always have something to do, and I like doing it. Aside from that, it’s introduced me to some of the most incredible people throughout the years, and I’ve learned something from all of them.”

Lenora gains inspiration from artists like Jean-Honore Fragonard (French Rococo painter distinguished by exuberance and hedonism). “He incorporated some pretty inappropriate themes for the time, which take a second to catch because the way they are painted is just so beautiful and distracting, but it’s like each painting has its own secrets, and if you don’t stop and admire it for long enough, you can totally miss out on what he was trying to show.

It makes one wonder how many messages or signals are missed in other artwork, or even other aspects of life, because you didn’t stop for long enough to soak in the details. Over all, I can only hope to achieve such a graceful, playful style,” pines the artist.

Through August 20th: “Double Take: Works by Ed Blackburn” Tyler Museum of Art’s summer blockbuster stars the cinema paintings of Texas artist Ed Blackburn. This solo show organized by the TMA highlights the acclaimed Texas artist’s ongoing fascination with pop-culture - particularly movies. The 30-plus paintings, prints, and lithographs gathered from public and private collections throughout the region distill scenes from iconic films ranging from the Elvis Presley vehicle “Tickle Me” to the noir classic “The Big Heat.”

“He (Blackburn) has a prolific body of work, and over his career has been interested in a lot of things,” Caleb Bell says. “Much of his work has pop cultural references, but he’s always exploring many ideas.”

For his cinema series, Blackburn painted scenes from movies that star Hollywood icons, such as Elvis Presley, Hopalong Cassidy, Marilyn Monroe, and Gregory Peck.

The painting of Peck comes from “Marooned,” a 1969 movie in which he plays an astronaut stranded in space. Elvis is depicted in a scene from “Tickle Me,” a 1965 musical in which he plays a singing bullrider working at a dude ranch.

Blackburn sometimes inserts the unexpected.

In “Elvis/Blue Boy Still Life” he superimposed “Blue Boy,” a portrait painted in 1797 by Thomas Gainsborough, on top of Elvis in a fight scene.

The art is displayed as an installation. In front of the painting is a wooden table holding objects that seem to mimic a Cezanne still life.

Those unfamiliar with the movie or actor can still appreciate the image as art. Blackburn says, “Any visual image has the ability to explain itself completely. That might even be what a visual image actually is. The trick, though, is you have to be able to see it.”

“Double Take” challenges people to look at sometimes familiar images and see them in a new way.

This Month at Gallery Main Street Gallery Main Street is an arts hub for the community throughout the year. A new and unique exhibit is on display at the Gallery located at 110 W. Erwin St., Downtown Tyler.

“Color Blind(ed)” is a large exhibit, featuring more than 30 works of art, in a wide variety of media.

Gallery Main Street features a new exhibit of original art approximately every eight weeks. Each exhibit opens with a Saturday evening reception starting at 5:30pm and features music, an opportunity to meet the artists, refreshments, and more. The Opening Receptions are free and open to the public.

“Making A Splash” Organized by the TMA and curated by Caleb Bell, “Making A Splash” showcases the drawings and paintings of Shannon Cannings of Lubbock, the photographs of Leigh Merrill of Dallas, and mixed media collages of Kelly O’Connor of San Antonio, in a group exhibition including close to 40 works of art.

“While highlighting the talent of each individual artist in their respective media, the selected works in this exhibition provide a visual celebration of summertime,” Bell said.

“From Disneyland and other familiar destinations to water guns and swimming pools, the images evoke a range of themes including nostalgia and Americana.”

“Making a Splash” is on exhibit through September 17th.

Upcoming Exhibits • October 1st-January 7th - “Andy Warhol: Screen Prints & Snapshots” Drawn from the Cochran Collection in Georgia, the works in this highly anticipated exhibition represent a cross-section of some of the most iconic output from history’s most celebrated purveyor of Pop Art. The subjects range from the dark (Dracula) to the whimsical (Howdy Doody, Mickey Mouse), creating a cross-section of Americana through the lens of Warhol’s singular vision. The name recognition that comes with Warhol is an immediate draw in the art world, and it is anticipated that this exhibition will easily to be among the 10 most popular in the TMA’s history. The exhibition continues through January 7th, 2018.

Exhibit, entries due by October 20th All Gallery Main Street exhibits are juried, which means pieces are submitted for review by a jury panel of professional artists. Topscoring pieces are selected for exhibit, and the piece with the highest score receives a Best in Show award.

To enter your work, go to downtowntylerarts.com, select “Gallery Exhibits” from the left-side menu, and then select the “Gallery Exhibit Information for Artists” tab. This link will lead artists to a page that provides all of the info needed to submit a piece including deadlines for submission.

September 9th (7-11pm) - AASH Art Show Vol. 2 - This annual art show will be held at Martin Walker PC, 121 N. Spring St., Downtown Tyler.

This is a juried show. It is free to attend. To enter, register, pay, submit, and confirm, go to arcadiaartshowtyler.com. The deadline to enter is August 10th. AASH - Arcadia Art Show is an annual international juried fine art show featuring painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and printmaking.

Best in show will win $500 and Runner Up will be awarded $300. You may enter one work of art for $20 or three for $50. There is no limit to the number of times you may enter. All artwork must be for sale.
