By Holli Fourniquet On the second Saturday of every month (February 10th), people from all over converge in Downtown Tyler for “Hit the Bricks.” Each month the event is unique and different.

Whether rain or shine, hot or cold, you can always count on something to do in Downtown Tyler on the second Saturday of every month. Grab your friends and family and “Hit the Bricks!”

Special activities this month include: Family • The Goodman Museum (10am-4pm) will host a scavenger hunt - fun for the whole family.

Art • Check out “Origins” (12 noon-4pm) at Gallery Main Street.

• “Shape and Form” Art Show featuring Cierra McGuckie and Jessica Sanders at Martin Walker, P.C., 7-9pm.

Shopping • Ye Olde City Antique Mall - Find hidden hearts with discounts and free items as you shop throughout the mall.

Live Music • East Texas Symphony Orchestra presents “Annual Family Concert” (1-2pm) at Liberty Hall. This performance will feature two pieces of music with narrator and imagery and will be perfect for little ones. Tickets are $5-$10.

• Also at ETX Brewing Co., Garage Bar, and Rick’s on the Square.

Tours • Half Mile of History Self-Guided Tour - This is an outdoor, half-mile loop around the square that commemorates significant people, places, or events in Tyler. For a list of locations go to cityoftyler.org/departments/historicpreservation.

Imagine a business that creates floral works of art, that combines the heart and thoughtful mission of fair trade flowers.

In the heart of Tyler, two women are creating unique and earthy arrangements that are works of art within themselves. The mother-daughter team of Paige McGuffey and Meagan Lissner are owners who work in tandem, relying on each other’s strengths to provide East Texas with a new kind of florist.

Recently expanding from a 1,300 square foot space to their new current location - encompassing 4,000 square feet, located on Broadway Downtown - Meagan says, “We now have the space to really showcase all we can do and offer more classes and hands-on plant experiences.” The shop is indeed a family-run business. Front and center is Meagan’s great-great grandfather’s countertop from his grocery business, where the magic is created.

“The front counter is almost like our own bar,” explained Meagan.

The client can place an order, talk and watch and give input while we mix up our elements into a bright and beautiful concoction.”

There are lots of philosophies and visions woven into this flower business. When asked about the distinctive name, “Moss: Where Flowers are Fair,” Meagan responded “I just adore everything about the moss plant itself; it is so lush and gorgeous. But over and above that, the literal meaning for the word ‘moss’ is charity and is also the symbol for maternal love.”

Owning and operating a small business involves not only hard work and long hours, but for Moss, everyone is involved. From Meagan’s grandmother, to her husband and three kids (aged 5, 7, and 9), the whole gang is involved in this one-of-akind business. “You really have to be passionate and love people,” said Meagan. “It is worth all the time and investment to be able to do what we love. It can be a balancing act, but we all pitch in and make it work.”

Most folks won’t be familiar with the term fair trade flowers, but it is at the heart and soul of everything they do. 80% of the world’s flowers sold in the U.S. are grown in Latin America, South America, and Africa where female workers are often exploited to keep costs low, leading to severe abuse and mistreatment.

Fair trade creates a sustainable business model that guarantees social justice for the workers, and certified fair trade flower farms ensure the safety and good conditions for workers, which are typically vulnerable young women.“It can be difficult to find sources and farms that are certified, but we do our research, and our mission is to support something greater than ourselves,” explained Meagan. “We want to educate others to the plight of the workers and how we can make a difference.”

The arrangements that are created and designed at Moss are unique and no two are ever the same. The team hunts for seasonal and unusual flowers to create masterpieces that will have

Valentines couples can enjoy an evening of “Love Under the Stars,” from 7-9:30pm Friday and Saturday, February 9th and 10th, at the Center for Earth & Space Science Education Center at Tyler Junior College.

“This is our seventh year to host ‘Love Under the Stars,’ and it just keeps growing in popularity,” said Kimberly Lessner, TJC science center director.

Admission is $85 per couple (ages 21 and up), and includes: heavy hors d'oeuvres and beer, wine, and champagne; a special full-dome planetarium show; an outdoor, telescopic viewing (weather permitting); a couples’ gift basket; and a commemorative photo.

The dome program will include a look at the constellations visible in the night sky and a virtual tour through the solar system and beyond to visit places in the universe that have inspired or were inspired by love.

Advance tickets can be purchased at sciencecenter.tjc.edu. Seating is extremely limited and tickets sell very fast, so be sure to buy yours while they are still available.

A Lock, A Key & A Symbol of Love:

A Lover’s Tradition at a Rose Rudman Trail Bridge February is the month of romance and

Tyler has a unique offering for those who want a symbol of their love at the Rose Rudman Trails.

A love lock or love padlock is a padlock which sweethearts lock to a bridge, fence, gate, monument, or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Typically, the sweethearts’ names or initials are inscribed on the padlock, and its key is thrown away to symbolize unbreakable love.

Tyler offers lovebirds a place to place a symbol of their love at Rose Rudman Trails.

In the section behind Woodcreek Club, follow the path south to the huge bridge. There you will find a fun display of locks of all kinds and sizes. Some have words, names, even photos. Others are simple displays with only initials or colors. All represent someone’s love to another.

From one end to the other, locks line the rail.

More than one hundred locks are clipped to the bars. Each one has its own story and symbolize love and devotion. Keys tossed in the river are devoured by the water, love locked forever.

Although it is arguable where and when the tradition started, the most famous bridge of locks was in Paris at the Pont des Arts. The padlocks were symbolically fastened to the French capital’s main bridges by loved-up couples. Tying a “love lock” on to the Pont des Arts, then throwing the key into the River Seine beneath was a tourist tradition. The padlocks that weigh heavily on the sides of the Pont des Arts tell stories dear to the lovers who affixed them to the celebrated bridge’s iron grillwork.

The weight of that love took a toll in Paris, where about eight feet of protective fencing on part of

the bridge collapsed. The locks have since been removed due to their enormous weigh that was destroying the bridge.

Paris is perhaps the most-famous spot, but locks can be found on bridges across the world.

Rose Rudman Trails are free and are easily accessible with a number of entry points. The picturesque trails wind through south Tyler and are perfect for walking, biking, skating, or jogging. They are enjoyable for the entire family and all fitness levels. There is lots of playground equipment, picnic tables, restrooms, park benches, and water fountains scattered along the way. The trail is well-maintained and always clean. They are patrolled by Tyler Police on bicycles. Rose Rudman Trails even remembered the doggies with scattered dog bowls attached to the water fountains.

Rudman Trail is comprised of 4 individual paths are paved, and are double wide trails that wind through S. Tyler. Rudman Loop is 1.2 miles, Southside Trail is .5 miles, Creekside Trial is .75 miles and the Grande Trail 1.7 miles.

Several of the trails end/begin at parks. The trails offer a challenge in both distance and in elevation.

On the northeast segment of the trail is the Tyler Cancer Bell and Pavilion, a place of honor and remembrance for cancer patients, their families, and caregivers.

Downtown Heart Hunt February 10th February 10th, 2-5pm, Downtown Tyler will turn red with hearts! Come

out and explore Downtown in a fun and competitive scavenger hunt.

Teams of two will take on the Downtown Heart Hunt starting at 2pm from Gallery Main Street. Teams will earn points by locating hearts around Downtown using hints provided and then uploading photos of the two team members with each heart on to social media using the #DowntownHeartHunt. The team with the most points who makes it back to Gallery Main Street by the designated time, will win the grand Valentine’s Day prize - “A Night on the Town” featuring overnight stay at Sleep Inn & Suites, gift cards to Woldert-Spence Bed & Breakfast, Strada Caffe, 2 tickets to Card 53 Comedy’s Valentine’s Day show at Liberty Hall, 2 movie tickets at Liberty Hall that can be redeemed any time, and a gift card to Roast Social Kitchen!

East Texas Auto & Cycle Show:

February 16th-18th at Harvey Convention Center The 2018 East Texas Auto & Cycle Show, benefiting the East Texas Crisis Center. will host its 28th Annual show at The Harvey Convention Center in Tyler on February 16th-18th.

This year’s show theme is ‘Fabulous 50’s’ featuring a collection of classic and antique 50’s model cars. The show will also provide a collection of vintage, classic, and special interest cars, trucks, and motorcycles from every decade.

Guests will enjoy live entertainment Saturday 12:30-4pm, and Sunday 1-4pm with performances

by The Magills and the Tyler All-Star Band.

This year’s raffle car is a 1964 1/2 Mustang Convertible donated to the East Texas Crisis Center

by Tyler Ford. This is the 15th consecutive and most valuable raffle car donated by Tyler Ford in order to raise funds to provide services for victims and survivors of violent crimes.

Also, Tim and DeAnda Frost will speak. Tim Frost is a memory-collector, storyteller, father and husband. Tim is a speaker and author of hope from firsthand experiences of survival. He emits a positive and light-hearted energy when he speaks to a large crowd or in a one-on-one conversation.

Registration will begin at 4pm on Friday February 23rd at Christ Episcopal Church, and the conference will begin in full at 5pm. The Foundry Coffee House and Bethel Bible Church will host Saturday February 24th’s portion of the conference.

Registration for the MBird Tyler Conference is $50. For couples, the cost is $90. A 1-Day Drop in ticket is $30. Tickets to the Josh White concert only is $15. Child care is available for a fee.

Make Some Different Plans for a Day of Love Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and that means - wait, let’s guess, cards, flowers, and candy. There’s nothing wrong with that, I mean who doesn’t love roses and chocolate. But if you are thinking about spending the day doing something a little different, we’d like to make a few suggestions for dialing up the romance, sizzle, and sweetness that this holiday is all about.

The Fancy

A night on the town sometimes involves a fancy dinner. Tyler has an abundance of excellent restaurants offering everything from seafood to steaks. Reservations are highly recommended.

Texas de Brazil 2376 Dueling Oaks, Ste. 100, Tyler For the love of meat! Be sure to try the newest fine dining in town.

Texas de Brazil is a Brazilian Steak House located just off of Old Jacksonville in Tyler. For one set price, they’ve got endless amount of food to serve.

To start, there is a wide selection salad bar included in the price of the meal - and an all you can eat main course. The best part is, you never have to leave you seat, for the main course that is. If you are interested in this new fine dining experience, be sure to check it out.

Dakota’s - 4803 Old Bullard Rd., Tyler Dakota’s is an intimate restaurant with a nice patio for more casual dining and drinks with an exceptional menu.

From oysters Rockefeller to the steak and prime rib, and seafood main courses, the options on their menu are endless. Open for lunch and dinner, Dakota’s has little alcoves for some roomy tables which are romantically cozy and private. Susan Dent said, “Dakotas is our ‘go to’ place for any special occasion. I have no doubt that you and your Valentine will enjoy dinner at this quaint, quiet, and overall incredible restaurant. Wines, of course, are from Kiepersol’s on-site vineyard; they are a highlight.

Bananas Foster and Cherries Jubilee are prepared tableside and is a show to behold.

Bernard's Mediterranean Restaurant - 212 Old Grande Blvd., Tyler Bernard’s has long been a go to spot for people with special occasions.

The intimate setting creates a very romantic and special dinner. Mediterraneanthemed cuisine features everything from stuffed trout to rack of lamb and everything in between.

Jack Ryan’s Steak & Chophouse - 102 N. College Ave., Tyler The 1930’s Deco bank building is beyond beautiful.

You step back in time when you enter, and the exceptional food is simply icing on the cake. When you first enter the foyer and see the grandeur of the staircase that leads up to the restaurant, you begin to realize you are in for a special experience. You are greeted at the grand front desk and with reservations made weeks in advance, immediately taken to your table. From an excellent wine list, to a Tenderloin that will melt in your mouth, Jack Ryan’s will not disappoint. The Lobster Mac-N-Cheese appetizer is divine. The Chicago/ San Francisco/Dallas and Cordon Bleu-trained chefs serve up brilliant sous vide meat perfectly seared and plated.

The Grove - 3500 Old Jacksonville Hwy, Tyler If you have been to The Grove for lunch or to the Smoke Shack, this Cupid’s Day, try out the inside dining room for dinner.

The menu hosts crab claws, Center Cut Filet, Center Cut Ribeye, Prime Bone In Ribeye, Jidori Chicken, Chilean Sea Bass, Beef Wellington, Pecan Crusted Salmon, Maple Roasted Duck, and much more. Lamb Lollipops and the famous Cap’n Crunch Shrimp are great starters.

The Grove Kitchen and Gardens is a unique property and features chef-crafted menus set on a sprawling, beautiful piece of land in the heart of Tyler. Something Different

If you want to do something a little different this year, here are a few suggestions: Roast Social Kitchen - 1125 E. 5th St., Tyler Roast is very unique restaurant located in midtown Tyler. It is an eclectic restaurant with an industrialchic vibe offering uniquely-created dishes by their excellent new Chef Thomas Mattson. There are different specials each week and depending on popularity, these new dishes will be added to the menu.

The Shrimp & Grits (pictured) are to die for amazingly fresh wild caught shrimp straight out of the Gulf into a savory Lone Star “beer blanc” sauce atop a roasted poblano and aged cheddar grit cake. Watch their Facebook page for daily creations. We love the Warmed Olive Bowl for a starter, the Grilled Hangar Steak is Texas Akaushi beef, Argentinian Chimichurri, roasted carrots. It’s hard to beat the famous Bee’s Knees pizza with roasted garlic, 4-cheese blend, sopressata, Italian sausage, Mike’s Hot Honey, thyme, and fresh orange. Roast has a great bar menu with the best Barrel Aged Old Fashioned around.

Roast is where the truly cool go to hang out, whether for lunch, cocktails or dinner!

Daniel Boone’s Grill & Tavern - 1920 E SE Loop 323, Tyler Come out and get your spurs on for hearty American eats amid Western decor and a menu full of fun slang

and humor! Boone’s offers reliable fast, friendly service, big portions, tasty comfort food, and neat decor, plus free beans, chili beans, and ice cream with your meal. They also have an amazing bar with good drink prices. The Bucket of Bird is a favorite as well as the huge Chicken Fried “Stake.” The Big Boonie Burger is always freshly made, and the “Basskit, Bakin Lettice&Mator” sandwich served on Texas toast is excellent. This is a very casual restaurant, sure to make you laugh and enjoy the meal.

Villa Montez 3324 Old Henderson Hwy., Tyler From their website, “Villa Montez offers Latinstyle seafood and meat dishes, plus comfort classics, presented in a swanky hilltop mansion.” Yes, you read that right - hilltop mansion! Villa Montez has awesome food and an old world rustic charm atmosphere. It has been consistently decorated with art and furniture that create a unique “Mediterranean Mexican” atmosphere. There is a downstairs cellar, two upper rooms for private gatherings, three dining rooms and an expansive patio. Overall, the menu has very interesting dishes with a South American twist. We love the sea bass and the margarita shrimp, they’re both delicious. Kristi Arms said, “Villa Montez never disappoints. This is a go to for special occasions or just a delicious meal in a beautiful setting. My favorite is the Chimichurri Steak and the salad with the chimichurri steak on it. I can never seem to get out of there without getting a huge slice of their fabulous chocolate cake! They say it is for sharing...which I will usually do if I am asked nicely.”

When you walk in, you are greeted like family. The main dining room is so charming. Mo and his incredible staff make sure you leave with a happy heart and a full belly. The food is always impeccable and being serenaded while you dine is delightful.

You can even dance! I highly recommend this treasure.” We couldn’t agree more. Mario’s atmosphere is very romantic in itself, and the entertainer playing big band music on weekend evenings really sets the stage for the fun Rat-Pack style atmosphere with the walls packed full of iconic movie posters and photos of famous stars from Hollywood’s golden years. The menu offers classic Italian favorites including lasagna, spaghetti with meatballs, veal picatta, Roman Platter, Veal Parmigiana, and shrimp scampi.

The cannoli is definitely worth saving room for.

Rose City Farmers Market Relocates to Downtown Tyler The Rose City Farmers Market is moving downtown,

joining several new small businesses that have opened in the past year in the Off The Square area, supporting downtown revitalization efforts.

The Rose City Farmers Market will open April 7th at 236 S. Broadway Ave., just a half block north of Front St. in the parking lot of Bill’s Unclaimed Furniture. The market is open from April to November. This is across from “Moss: Where Flowers are Fair” and ETX Brewing Co. The new location will be within walking distance of the Brick Street and Azalea districts, and near the Fair Plaza Parking Garage to accommodate market shoppers. There is always free parking in the parking garage.

Music Adam Brown & The Triple Crown Band: All About The Experience

By Johnny Griffith Adam Brown is in love with music and wants his fans to feel that love. Born in 1989, he began his love affair with music when, at the age of four, he saw an old performance of Stevie Ray Vaughn on TV. At the age of five, his mother gave him his first guitar which had belonged to his father who had passed away when Adam was only two. He’s had a guitar close at hand ever since.

Growing up in East Texas, Brown’s mother not only encouraged his love of music, but helped him get gigs at the ripe old age of 10, constantly exposing him to different types of music and musicians. This education allowed him to start his first band by the age of 17 and a year later, Adam opened up for Candlebox at a show here in East Texas.

Always persistent and always learning, Brown has since started a project called Adam Brown and The Triple Crown Band and they are performing all over the area as well as working on albums and videos along the way. Motivated by his love of the music, a solid work ethic, and his young daughter...Brown expects big things to happen and is doing his part to make sure he and the band have those chances.

Johnny: When did you decide to take music past the hobby level and try to make it more?

Adam: I think I always kind of knew that I wanted music to be my life and my career choice. After the first time I saw the enjoyment in people’s faces that watched me do what I loved so much, I knew this was what I was meant to do.

Johnny: Who makes up the Triple Crown Band and where did that name come from?

Adam: The Triple Crown Band is made up of Roy Hufstetler on bass guitar and backup

vocals, Eric Dobbins on lead guitar, Gary Henson on drums, and myself on lead vocals, lead and rhythm guitar. The name sort of came to us right after our first practice back in 2011. I was always a big Crown Royal fan and it had a good ring to it so it just stuck.

Johnny: How would you describe your music?

Adam: That’s one of the hardest questions to answer - to describe my own music, but I would definitely say it’s Red Dirt country with a lot of rock and blues influence in there as well.

Johnny: Have you and the TCB done any previous recording work?

Adam: We have an album out right now with 10 tracks on it called “Close Your Eyes” that we recorded at Rosewood Studios in Tyler. We still sell hard copies at our shows and it’s also on any music download app for purchase. We just put out a new single that is currently playing on 105.7 KYKX called “At a Bar Somewhere in Texas” and we will have the new album out by the middle of this year.

Johnny: About how many shows a month are you guys currently playing?

Adam: As much as we can! When we are not focused on recording the new album, we practice and play every chance we get. Make sure to follow us on social media - we are constantly booking new shows.

Johnny: What have some of the biggest challenges been to devoting more time to playing gigs and traveling?

Adam: It’s all about the cashflow baby! Just like everybody else, we have bills to pay: car payment, rent, etc. and have to put food on the table so we have to do that first and then everything else goes into the music. I would say juggling between to the two and keeping life at a happy medium is probably the biggest challenge there is, not just in music but with anything you love.

Johnny: What has been your support base through the journey?

Adam: We definitely couldn’t do this without our family, friends, and fans. Through the good times and bad, we wouldn’t be as far as we are if not for their love and support.

memorable gig to date?

Adam: I’d have to say Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth was probably the coolest place I’ve been able to play so far because there have been so many greats on that stage and to be able to follow them - standing in the same place as them - was just amazing.

As cool as that was though, I believe the most memorable shows are yet to come.

Johnny: What’s your proudest accomplishment so far in your career as a musician?

Adam: Without a doubt, recording my first album was a great accomplishment, and my first big dream was to be able to hear my song played on the radio so when that happened, I was pretty excited. Kind of on that same line was when we heard a bar full of people sing one of our songs for us. There just isn’t anything that can adequately describe the sight of other people singing something you created.

Johnny: What’s your favorite cover song you do that nobody else is doing?

Adam: You know, I don’t think we worry so much about playing a song no one else is playing right now...so much it is that our sound, and show, is unique to us. Even if we’re playing the same cover tunes as other bands, when we play them, it will sound completely different. To us, it’s all about just playing - our sound and our way.

The rest will work itself out.

Johnny: Okay, let’s say I’m out on the weekend looking for a live show to enjoy. What sets you guys apart from the other options I have?

Adam: We’re looking forward to a full schedule of shows this year, both acoustic and full band. Also, promoting our new album that we can’t wait for you all to hear. We are also excited about working with our new management company. They are adding a new dynamic to our growth as a band including new videos, which are in the works as we speak. For a Good “Soulful” Cause: Edwin Holt, Red Clay Roadhouse, and Texas College Choir Join Forces

By Edwin Holt Some of you already know the backstory of my musical life, what you may not know is the soulful bond that developed between myself and a culture that I have come to define as my second family.

Like most people that stay in their comfort zone of their own culture, I found myself in a different realm. For several years in the south Dallas area and beyond, I found myself, a twenty year old male, performing in an all black blues band, in all black juke joints. The music was and will always be a great reward of my dues paid. The family of musicians I inherited, was a reward I never saw coming.

Having the opportunity to perform, travel, and join them at their dinner tables with their families, has changed me into someone else.

Growing up in the small town of New London, Texas, I was sheltered to what lied ahead in the real world. A world that opened my young eyes to the reality of a culture riddled with struggles that continue to plague our society and most importantly, the very body of Christ.

People talk about how we are divided as a culture. They say that leadership does nothing to aid within this division but at the same time we fail to notice the blame within ourselves.

We think we are helpless to make any kind of change in the world due to who we are or where

were from - I believe differently. My focus in life, is to make a continued difference using love as a means of change.

So it should be no surprise that when the Texas College Choir reached out and asked me to help them get to New York in their own efforts to share the Gospel of music, I was all in. And with that, I’m hoping you are all in as well.

Presented by the Holt family, this will be an evening full of soul that will take place on February 24th at 8pm. Doors open at 7pm. The performance is being held at the Caldwell Auditorium, 300 S. College Ave., Tyler.

road, the trees blowing, a fire burning, something I see on TV, the loving touch of my wife. To be a good songwriter, which I don’t claim to be, you have to be able to see the beauty and rawness in everything. See something, break it down, describe it. The inspiration for my song “Wildfire” came from sitting around a fire at my in-laws. I sat there looking at this fire burning and I thought about how beautiful fire is too look at and watch, but also how destructive it can be. I took that thought and turned it into how a toxic relationship can destroy you, just like a wildfire.

Johnny: Obviously with your background and path, you’ve played a lot of shows and made a lot of memories along the way. We’re going to assume meeting your future wife would be your best memory from a show...what would you say your second best memory on the journey has been so far?

Sean: I had the opportunity to play guitar with my Dad at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. I didn’t sing or even say a word into a microphone, but I got to stand on a stage where so many legends stood, and play music to a sold out crowd. That is one of the highlights of my life so far.

Johnny: What’s on the agenda for 2018? Big shows, new recordings?

Sean: I’ll be recording a new record in the next few months. I’m beyond excited to get new fresh music out to people. I really believe this record will open a lot of doors for me as an artist and get me into some bigger venues with bigger audiences.

Johnny: Where can people catch you live over the next couple of months?

Sean: The Central Station in Gladewater, Open Range in Gilmer, and various other places in East Texas. I’m also booking a few dates in February/March for full band shows. That will definitely be one to see. Full band gigs are awesome because the show is completely different than an acoustic set.

Max McRuiz: No Labels Please

By Johnny Griffith In the music world there are all sorts of labels for musicians: guitarist, drummer, keyboardist, country artist, pop artist, R&B artist, etc. Then there are those people who transcend any attempt to be put into a box and are constantly evolving their skill and style as they grow.

Allow me to introduce you to Max McRuiz.

Born in Lindale, and raised in Longview, Max inherited a musical past from his grandparents on both sides of his family.

Max attended Spring Hill high school where he excelled in the music program. A four-time All Area 1st Chair, and three-time State 1st Chair winner in drums, his passion for music translated into several scholarships and the opportunity to continue his education in music at the collegiate level where he continued to develop skills on several instruments. After studying music education/performance at Kilgore College as well as SFA, Max was a student teacher at Kilgore High School. It was during this time that he realized he probably wasn’t destined to be a band director so he started teaching music on the side as a hobby to keep his skills sharp and fresh on his mind.

A veteran of several successful musical projects in the area, Max has recently devoted more time to solo projects and building a new trio for local gigs across the area. I sat down with Max recently for a chat.

Johnny: When did you first start to develop an interest in music?

Max: I developed a love for music at a very young age. My parents would place my crib next to the TV when I was only 8 months old so I could stand up and dance to The California Raisins as they would sing old Motown hits like “Heard it Through The Grapevine” and “Sign Sealed Delivered.” My love for music has only grown stronger as the years progressed.

Johnny: You’re a multi-instrumentalist.

What were you first drawn to, and what do you consider your best instrument at this point in your life?

Max: I started playing drums and guitar around 1999 when my brother bought an old Samick electric guitar and Laney amp and it came pretty easy to me. As the years went on, I picked up the piano and played by ear until college where I had proper instruction on theory and reading sheet music. Although I would admit that the piano is my favorite instrument to play and compose with, I think drums are my forte. I pride myself in the fact that I am a ‘Jack of All Trades,’ so I try not to become too unbalanced as far as which instrument I am better on.

Johnny: What was your first public performance?

Max: I first took the stage when I was 7 years old for a talent show. I continued doing talent shows throughout school but it wasn’t until 2006 when I started a country cover band named Pocket Aces and I started gigging and playing shows. Once in college at SFA, I started my most successful band, Westbound 21, with friends Cody Wayne, Lyndsey Torrez, and Jason Skidmore.

Johnny: You’ve been involved in several successful local music projects. When did you decide to do more solo work?

Max: In September 2013, I decided to leave Westbound 21 and the big country music scene to play music at my local church. I just started playing solo gigs by myself and with my trio about a year ago. This time around I have the freedom to play exactly what I want without having to stay within the confines of a specific genre or style. My shows have a very wide variety from MoTown to John Mayer to Michael Jackson to Goo Goo Dolls and many more. There is something for everyone.

Johnny: How would you describe your current style?

Max: I would say my current style is easylistening/Adult contemporary. I play with a loop station so obviously Ed Sheeran has had a big influence on my music.

Johnny: Are you creating much original content or is it primarily covers at this point?

Max: With my last band, we focused a lot on original content but now I just play what moves me. I pick songs for my set that have meaning and are fun to listen to.

I play a lot of covers but tend to play them with my own style.

Johnny: About how many gigs a month are you playing at this point?

Max: Between private events, charity gigs, coffee house shows, and big shows with my trio, I play around 3-4 times a month.

Johnny: Is this still in the hobby stage for your or are you looking at a more serious push for a musical career? And if so, what direction would you like to see that path take if up to you?

Max: I have “been there and done that!” My last band played four gigs a week for five years and it burned me out. Now that I am older and have a wife, I enjoy picking and choosing the gigs that I take. Music is an avenue that allows me to express myself but I don’t want to ever make it into a “job” again. It takes most of the fun out when you start to try and make a living while attempting to make it big.

Johnny: Anything noteworthy coming up in February or March the readers might catch you at to enjoy your talents?

Max: I’ve got a couple of gigs coming up in February that will be fun nights.

Johnny: What has been your best memory so far in your musical career?

Max: December 30, 2013, I got to play at The Dallas Cowboys Stadium for a 30-minute pre-game show. That was a great experience and memory that I will never forget. More recently I got to share the stage with my childhood hero Bryan White a few months ago at The Central Station in Gladewater. That was very surreal and great experience.

Johnny: Besides your own music, what do you listen to currently that gets you excited?

Max: I am a huge fan of Marc Broussard, Ed Sheeran, John Mayer, Dave Barnes, Earth Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, and Journey to name a few.

“Living Roots of Music” at Tyler Library The Tyler Public Library invites every one to experience a one time performance called “The Living Roots Of Music” with Lauren Pelon on February 8th. The free performance will be in the Tyler Library’s Taylor Auditorium and will begin at 4:30pm.

The programs feature voice and a variety of antique and contemporary instruments from many countries and cultures - from the ancient bone flute, gemshorn and lyre to a modern electronic wind instrument and pedalboard.

Pelon’s compositions are featured, along with music from ancient Greece, medieval and renaissance Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas.

Admission is free. The Tyler Public Library is located at 201 S. College Ave., Tyler.

Tony Ramey grew up in West Virginia on Bluegrass and Bill Withers, found Willie, Waylon, Cash, and Kristofferson at eleven (who fueled an already fiery passion to write songs), then he heard Steve Earle whose songs convinced him to move to “Guitar Town” (Nashville) to hone his craft. He would eventually leave for Texas when the road called him out again.

Inside the Artist’s Studio: Paula McDermott, Ignite the Light

By Derrick White “Art has given me an outlet to express myself. Art has the ability to really help you work through your issues and ideas both good and bad. Teaching art at TJC has been amazing. The TJC art department is so vibrant and supportive, it breeds creativity. I love teaching. We have such a diverse student body, they are like a breath of fresh air, I learn something new from them every day and I hope they learn from me.”

A positive energy or vibe is one the most important assets in the art department at Tyler Junior College and our newest full-time professor is a firework! Artist Paula McDermott joins the faculty teaching drawing and art appreciation bringing her amazing passion and excitement for art, life, microbiology, and the creative process. Paula earned both her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Tyler. She had also attended Stephen F. Austin State University and Sam Houston State University where she says she had great experiences which were very influential. Paula is a lively, spirited, and engaged professor taking a personal interest in the lives of her students and teaching as well as mentoring beyond the classroom. McDermott involves her students in outdoor collaborative projects and demonstrations to students how to look and appreciate past the ordinary to the aesthetics of

the natural world and the often overlooked beauty in all of the small things surrounding us everywhere every day. On a beautiful spring day you will find her with her group of students somewhere on the incredible campus of TJC designing Andy Goldsworthy (environmental sculptor) outdoor nature mandalas (circles in geometric patterns symbolically representing the order of the universe). These brief, temporary art pieces will be created with natural materials like leaves, flowers, salt, rocks, and sticks and become nice unexpected surprises for those visitors lucky enough to stumble upon one of the creations. They diminish, fade, and change over time so it is a transient experience, fleeting.

“I work with whatever materials I can find.

I am currently working with fibers. I am using different types of found objects and fabrics. I am dying, sewing, stuffing, tying, and binding individual pieces for components of wearable, wall pieces and installations. I am also creating mixed media collage pieces,” states the artist.

Paula continues, “I really got interested in art as a young child. My Grandmother was a painter and my mother incorporated a lot of art in her science classroom and at home. She got me interested in sea life and microscopic organisms we would see through the microscope, this still interests and influences me today. I think a lot about the unseen or things hard to see, things really controlling our bodies and our world, things we as humans do not often acknowledge like the microscopic world around us, like plankton, phytoplankton, bacteria and some fungi. We don’t often think about it but different types of phytoplankton really help sustain all life on earth, they produce 50% of earth’s oxygen supply. Even our internal organs and cells are not

This Month at Tyler Museum of Art “Best Friends II: The Dog as Subject in Fine Art Photography.”

On exhibit through March 25th, and presented in collaboration with SPCA of East Texas, this exhibition presents “man’s best friend” as captured by 31 fine art photographers.

Organized by and on loan from The Grace Museum in Abilene, the show features close to 30 accomplished photographers including Elliott Erwitt and William Wegman, each sharing their unique take on the ongoing fascination with the unique relationship of dogs and their owners in everyday life.

The exhibition originally includes prints from its extensive Alice and Bill Wright Photography Collection. “Alice and Bill Wright began collecting dog pictures early in their careers,” says information from Grace Museum. “As dog lovers and professional photographers, they found the combination of technical merit and subject matter irresistible.”

Some captured images of dogs in the tradition of documentary photography while others carefully composed shots of dogs (sometimes with their humans) in studio settings.

Exhibition admission is on a “pay what you can” basis, and with proceeds benefiting the TMA and SPCA of East Texas equally.

“Each photograph is an outstanding example of the photographer’s ability to instill an image with much more than just a faithful record of the dogs’ appearance,” said Judy Tedford Deaton of The Grace Museum, the exhibition’s original curator.

To cap off the festivities, the SPCA will host “Adoption Day” on the TMA front lawn on the Tyler Junior College campus to close out the exhibition on March 25th.

Special events in connection with “Best Friends II” include free First Friday tours at 11am February 2nd and March 2nd; and Family Days from 2-4pm Saturday, February 10th and March 10th.

Admission to both exhibitions is free all day.

often seen but we could not live without all of them working together.”

Paula McDermott’s artwork looks natural, organic, and like something inspired by the microscopic. Big soft forms mimic an altered and blown up scale of a cellular world we do not see and often take for granted. “I am really into the way things can naturally grow, change, transform, cover and disguise. Like dividing cells, colonies of coral, or the harmful, symbiotic relationships barnacles have with whales or a remora with sharks or manta rays, these relationships can be both harmful and beneficial,” says Paula, adding, “This is where my wearable work has come in. The wearable sculpture can serve as a soft barrier or shield for the wearer, they offer a personal space but in a soft way. They can disguise and take away identity; they can give protection from unwanted attention for the introvert. They both attract and repel the viewer.

Most of my work can be either worn or hung.”

Although soft sculpture is largely underrepresented in mainstream art markets and exhibitions, Paula has many influences in the art world. Some of Paula McDermott’s inspirations and favorite artists are Nick Cave (American fabric sculptor, dancer, and performance artist),

numerous others that have not been on display at the Museum in more than a decade.

Tara Donavan (New York artist known for site-specific installation art utilizing everyday materials), Alexander Calder (American sculptor of delicately balanced or suspended shapes that move in response to touch or air currents), Susie MacMurray (British artist whose work includes drawing, sculpture and site-generated installations), Ernesto Neto (influential, contemporary Brazilian artist creating largescale, sensuous environments evoking bodily experiences), Sally Hewett (British stitching artist making works characteristics of human bodies), Yayoi Kusama (Japanese, contemporary artist primarily working in sculpture and installation), Anthony Howe (American sculptor who creates wind-driven sculptures resembling pulsing, alien creatures), Jason decaires Taylor (British sculptor and creator of the world’s first underwater sculpture park), Andy Goldsworthy (British sculptor and environmentalist creating site-specific sculpture and land art), Eva Hesse (Jewish German-born American sculptor, known for pioneering work in materials such as latex, fiberglass, and plastics), and Eugenia Loli (Greek filmmaker, illustrator, and modern vintage collage artist). Paula responds to this list of artist because they all have dedicated themselves, their work and lives and created something igniting a light inside Paula McDermott and we are the beneficiaries. “They all produce artwork that is interactive and in many cases kinetic (movable). Most of their work is somehow related to the human body, whether it is work representing different aspects of the human body, is directly interactive, or work involving performance,” states the artist.

“Shape and Form” Opens February 10th: Work be Jessica Sanders and Cierra McGuckie on Display

An art show featuring two emerging local artists, Cierra McGuckie and Jessica Sanders, will open February 10th and be on view until May 31st, at Martin Walker Law Firm, 121 N. Spring St., Downtown Tyler. They will host the exhibit in its award-winning facility, which historically served as the Arcadia Theater but now serves as the law firm headquarters.

Pieces to be displayed at the show will include paintings by Cierra McGuckie and sculptures by Jessica Sanders. Cierra’s work comprises large-scale oil on canvas psychological portraits which depict fictional women from the mid century era. The paintings are reminiscent of the mood and color palette of that time.

Jessica’s sculptures and her practice are based on an assemblage of small handmade fired and glazed porcelain tiles using wire. The labor-intensive work generates fluid, fabric-like irregular shapes which are mounted on the wall creating abstract compositions.

February 10th (10am-2pm) - Mosaic with Glass Class - Learn about the beauty of Mosaic on Glass, appearing in the window through the sunlight like a stained glass window without the lead or without any soldering required.
