Food Athena Greek and American Family Restaurant: All About Good Food and Family

By Barbara King The kitchen at Athena is full of activity, and like everything else about this unique restaurant, it’s all about family, all the time.

The Sklavenitis family, sister co-owners Vicky and Effie, run an authentic dining experience like no other. Recipes handed down from generation to generation remain the mainstays on the menu, infused with Greek flavors and love for good food.

Athena opened in 2013 and is growing strong thanks to their good friends and customers that keep coming back according to Vicky. The clientele started out with folks who had visited Greece and were familiar with the food but has grown by word of mouth to regulars who can’t get enough of the atmosphere and homemade delicacies.

Vicky and her daughter-inlaw Mariam are running the show in the kitchen tonight, but the entire family is involved and makes the place the labor of love that is quite evident as you are greeted warmly at the door.

“You have to be passionate about food, people, and service,” Vicky said, explaining that the 90-hour weeks are not for the faint of heart. “We get in early, get the prep work done, which includes three different Greek homemade soups, salads, and of course, our specialty Greek desserts,” she explained.

Vicky and her family make sure you are made to feel right at home and make it a point

to visit with customers at their tables. Vicky said, “If you order something and it is not to your liking, we make sure that we make it right every time, and will bring you something else to try from the menu. Our goal is to make sure no one goes home hungry, and everybody leaves happy.”

The family hails from the Greek island of Lekas, and moved to North Carolina to begin their restaurant business, then on to Tyler. Every family member pitches in, and the kitchen is a whirlwind of activity, from chopping the fresh vegetables to slicing the gyro off the roasting spit.

The menu is a cornucopia of delights: appetizers including traditional hummus, dolmas (imported grape leaves stuffed with rice, served with tzatziki and pita bread) rotisserie gyro, spanakopita (fresh spinach pie) are all served with exquisite presentation and attention to detail.

Salads are perfection, including Aphrodite’s salad, served with fresh spinach leaves and strawberries, with feta cheese, tossed in their own balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

Traditional Greek favorites are a taste sensation, including chicken or pork souvlaki, lamb shish kabob, pastistio (layers of pasta and ground beef sautéed in herbs and spices, topped with bechamel sauce, and served with warm pita bread), and mousaka (layers of roasted potato, eggplant, parmesan cheese, and ground beef). Drunk pork chops are marinated in Greek wine and grilled with Greek spices.

Greek food isn’t complete without traditional pitas, and there are a lot to choose from: famous gyro pita, pork, chicken, lamb, vegetarian, philly, or kefte (Greek meatballs wrapped in a pita topped with diced cucumbers, tomatoes, red onions, tzatziki, and parsley).

Athena literally has something for everyone. For those craving more traditional items there is Grecian spaghetti, lasagna, chicken parmesan, manicotti, and spaghetti kima (homemade meat sauce).

Craving something from the sea? Athena also has tilapia. They offer a variety of platters that will fill everyone up including the Gyro Plate (lamb and beef served with tzatziki sauce, French fries, Greek salad, and warm pita bread), Athena’s Combo (beef and chicken, onions and peppers, tzatziki, pita, and Greek potatoes), or Athena’s trio (pastitso, moussaka, spanakopita, and warm pita bread).

or chicken souvlaki, with lunch items ranging from $5.95 to $9.95.

You can’t leave Athena without trying some of their homemade baklavas: layers of filo pastry, filled with chopped nuts, syrup, and honey. It will leave you wanting more and more! Other items on the dessert menu are Galaktoboureko (Semolina custard in filo dough), tiramisu, chocolate, or cheesecake.

You can enjoy beer and wine with your meal, including authentic Greek wines. In the future, the sisters hope to bring a nephew from Greece for a few months to entertain customers with great music while they dine.

Athena’s also caters and has handled weddings, corporate lunches, and events in the Tyler area.

When your dinner arrives, garnished with feta, olives, and warm pita bread, it looks

almost too good to eat! Vicky said, “You have to love to cook and serve the best food you can prepare to your guests. Our motto is, ‘When you’re here, you’re family,’ and we truly believe that.”

Athena is open Monday-Thursday, 11am9pm, Friday and Saturday, 11am-9:30pm, and Sunday, 11am-9pm. Athena is located at 1593 WSW Loop 323 in Tyler.

Music LOVEGUNNER, A KISS Tribute Band: Laying Down The Beat

By Johnny Griffith So I have this video in my head of me being on Jeopardy that goes a little something like this: Me: I’ll take Music Trivia for $1000, Alex. (Of course it’s the Double Jeopardy question, and of course, I wagered way too much money.)

Alex: What band liked to play obnoxiously loud music by night and engage in frivolity by day was started by Stanley Eisen, Chaim Witz, George Peter John Criscuola, and Paul Frehley in 1972?

Me: Who is Bachmann Turner Overdrive? (which would be stupid because no one Alex Trebek just mentioned is named Bachmann or Turner) Alex: Oh sorry there, Johnny, the correct answer would be the hottest band in the world: KISS! At least that’s how it goes in my head when I think of the guys who would eventually become household names as Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley. KISS would go on to create a marketing empire, making music, merchandise, movies, and embarking on bombastic tours that became their trademark. KISS would see many evolutions over the years, but the one that always comes to mind is the original quartet in full makeup and in character as their alter egos. Not coincidentally, this is also the version you’ll get to see when you catch a show

by LOVEGUNNER, a KISS tribute band based here in East Texas.

No longer viewed as second-class gigs, tribute bands have turned into well-oiled machines in which hours of, not only practicing the original music note for note but additionally, hours of studying mannerisms and the stagecraft necessary to give fans the experience they want. No one knows this better than Marshall Hance, Mark Shepard Hill, Jarod Frank, and Randy McDonald as they have spent the better part of the last two years developing themselves into an exacting replica of KISS when they take the stage. Even more impressively, they’ve done this while being scattered all over East Texas and being involved in other gigs.

I managed to track everyone down to find out who they are behind the makeup and what exactly goes into duplicating such a complex act: Johnny: So let’s start with what character you play and a bit of background.

Marshall: I pay tribute to Paul Stanley, the “Starchild,” and I’ve been playing music since I was 10 years old. My dad and mom introduced me to music at a young age and have encouraged me ever since. I have my own personal group under the title of “Marshall Hance,” and we play all original music I have written.

Mark: I play the role of the “SpaceAce,” Ace Frehley, in LOVEGUNNER. I grew up in Longview and really got deep into listening to music around 1983 in the early days of MTV. I got serious about guitar around the age of 20 while at SFA in Nacogdoches. As the desire to become a professional grew, I decided to go to a music school and found the commercial music program at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas and attended from 2001-2004.

Around 2007, I moved to Austin and got a

gig playing bass for Gary P. Nunn for a while, then decided to move back to East Texas and played in the Escape Artists, a 60’s- 00’s cover band with the versatile and talented pair of Wes Odom and Jay Baker. After the Escape Artists became defunct, I began to look around for a new project to get involved in. I scoured Craigslist every evening and eventually saw an ad that read “KISS Tribute seeks ACE,” I absolutely had to look into it.

Jarod: I take on the role of Peter Criss who was the “Catman” on stage. I’ve been in the tribute band scene in Houston for close to 10 years playing in tributes to Ozzy, Foo Fighters, Poison, Mötley Crüe, AC/DC, Def Leppard, Weezer, Bon Jovi, and of course, KISS. KISS is the band that first got me into music, having bought Double Platinum on 8-track when I was 6 years old. I started playing drums when I was 9 and was in original bands from middle school through college. After a break, I joined some original bands around 2005, but after a couple of years, I realized that tribute bands were really starting to take off and could actually be more financially successful than bands doing standard covers or originals.

Randy: During the show, I’m the “Demon,” Gene Simmons. I’m from College Station and have been playing several instruments since high school. In addition to LOVEGUNNER, I’m also involved in a blues band and an oldtime string band.

Johnny: So whose idea was it to start a KISS tribute band, and how did that get brought up in a conversation?

Randy: Well, we didn’t actually start out to be a full-fledged tribute band. While playing at a Blues Jam one night, Marshall and I were talking and discovered that we were both KISS fans and made a comment in passing that it would be fun to get together and jam on some KISS songs. We started thinking about drummers we knew and brought in our friend, Blake. Our first idea was just to pick a few songs to jam on and have fun. We picked about five songs, got together one night, and were surprised at how good it sounded and how much fun it was to play these songs. We continued getting together and enjoying it more and more to the point that we finally decided to start searching for a lead guitarist to try to put together the full tribute show.

After a few interviews and auditions, we found our SpaceAce, and after about five months of work eventually did put together our first short show. As we continued to progress, it became apparent to everyone that due to other obligations, our drummer was not going to be able to devote the time required by an ongoing tribute act, so we parted on good terms and located our current drummer, Jarod, who was

able to step in as a rock solid KISS drummer and really advance the band quickly.

Johnny: Was this just another project to be in, or did the appreciation for KISS go beyond that?

Mark: Everyone in the band is a bona fide, lifelong fan of the group. I think it’s essential that everyone in the band be a serious fan of (whatever group) if you are to partake in a tribute band. The level of dedication and diligent study required to get elements correct is incredibly demanding, and if someone doesn’t have the conviction, desire, and pride to do the band justice, I just don’t feel you’re going to get a professional entertainment product.

Johnny: What have been the challenges up to this point of pulling this off and doing it with the execution necessary not to be a caricature of KISS, but rather a genuine tribute band that captures the essence of a KISS show in their prime?

Randy: Two challenges, really. One is that we all live in different towns, so even getting together to rehearse means travel and a commitment of at least a day or two. That’s one reason we work hard to make the most of our rehearsal time. The other challenge has been dealing with the complexity of many aspects at once. A lot of people think of KISS as being simplistic, but when you try to replicate it, you quickly begin to realize that it is a very complex act. Just playing the music and singing the harmonies correct is challenging enough.

Then, you have to find or make the costume, learn what makeup is used, and how to put it on correctly.

Also notable, the stage show is not just a collection of random movements. A lot of it is choreographed to happen at certain times and at a certain location on stage, and that all has to be worked out. Additionally, each signature shake of the head, facial expressions, and the unique way each individual moves around on stage is all studied and done for a purpose.

Then, trying to do it all while wearing seven-inch heels and accurately playing your instrument is a whole new ball game. There’s a lot to think about at the same time.

Johnny: You guys recently did a big show at Click’s Live in Tyler that was amazing to watch. What did that show do for the band as far as confidence and exposure?

Marshall: Click’s was a great show! They have an amazing stage, easily one of the largest I’ve played on and definitely the best light show. Exposure-wise, we got amazing photos and videos to be able to showcase how we look and what we’re about.

Mark: That show was, by far, our best up to this point! That was the first venue where we could truly get the audio and visual aspects

of a KISS show correct because they have the proper technology and ample stage space to accommodate a true rock show. It boosted our confidence immediately when we glanced back at the footage and saw what it looked like. I’d like to stress how professional and accommodating Tyler Johnson and David Wilson (sound and light techs at Click’s) are. They are true pros and went above and beyond to help us put on a professional show. We cannot thank David, Tyler, and Click’s enough for allowing us the opportunity to perform. They are a class act over there, and we’re fortunate to have a venue like Click’s in East Texas.

Johnny: When it comes to KISS, the look is as important as the music. Where did you find the costumes, and who is doing your makeup?

Mark: Randy’s wife is a very handy seamstress, and she did an excellent job manifesting the outfits for the Demon and Catman. Marshall’s costume is an officially licensed costume that KISS made available for purchase. My outfit was acquired from a costume builder out of Ft. Worth, named David McBrayer, who has a business called Metal Mayhem Tribute Gear and can be found on Facebook. David is fanatically passionate about what he does, and his main products are KISS tribute costumes.

As far as our makeup, just like the real band, we do it ourselves. A lot of people assume that KISS, being millionaires, just have people sit in front of them and do their makeup, but that’s not the case and never has been.

Johnny: With more than 40 albums of material, how did you go about deciding what songs would be on the set list?

Marshall: Currently, the set list is a combination of what we already knew and what was from KISS Alive 1 and 2. And a few from the 3rd and 4th alive tours. We plan to expand on to deeper cuts once we get the ball rolling with the set we have.

Johnny: What's on the horizon for the rest of 2017 and into next year?

Randy: We’ve got our sights set on some bigger markets and traveling a bit, but we want venues in East Texas to understand that we really want to come out to the smaller venues too and let people be able to relive that original experience of the people who saw KISS from the front row when they were just starting out. Some venues may think that this show is too big for their venue, but they should give us a call. KISS played in all kinds of venues when they were starting out, and it’s fun for us to relive some of that same experience.

Kings (and Queen) of Swing

By Johnny Griffith Jazz. All that jazz. Jazz hands. DJ Jazzy Jeff. Jazzed up. If you ask a statistically significant number of people in this area, the previous phrases will probably exhaust their personal encyclopedic knowledge of the genre.

They might be able to name a few performers over the years which you had to have been living under a rock (or a pine tree) to not recognize like Armstrong, Miles, Brubeck, Coltrane, and Ella; beyond that and it gets sketchy.

There isn’t the knowledge of the complexity, spontaneity, and democracy within the music because you really have to experience jazz live and in person to gain a better understanding of the music and the musicians who play it, and unfortunately, there hasn’t historically been a plethora of opportunities in the area.

Fortunately for East Texans, the genre is experiencing a growth trend locally and the movement is being led by the collective known as Purple Velvet Fox (PVF).

PVF is comprised of core members Sarah Roberts on alto and soprano sax, Alex Blair on bass, Joe Snider on percussion, and founder and band leader Gary C. Hatcher on guitar while often performing with guests on various instruments. One of the most acclaimed local acts, they’ve taken home the award for Best Jazz Band in East Texas on three different occasions and routinely play shows all over the region in their attempt to play great music while educating people along the way.

Professionals in every sense of the word, the “core four” have the credentials to step on stage with the most seasoned musical veterans and have accumulated an amazing amount of knowledge in one band. Hatcher holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of North Texas and is a Professor of Art at UT Tyler and the B.J. and Dub Riter Professorship in Art. Alex Blair plays 4, 5, and 6 string electric bass, fretted and fretless, is thirty-five years into an ever expanding dynamic music career that includes teaching, composition, live and studio performance, music audio production, and recording studio owner of WindWord Studio in Tyler. Dr. Sarah Roberts keeps a very active teaching and performance schedule as Professor of Music, Jazz Studies, and Saxophone at UT Tyler and holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Saxophone Performance from the University of North Texas. Finally, Joe Snider is a lifelong percussionist and graduate of UT Tyler where he holds a Bachelor of Music degree in percussion and performance. A sought after performer, teacher, and clinician, he supports

himself as a full-time musician. On Sundays he is the percussionist at Green Acres Baptist Church in their Contemporary Service and in addition to performing regularly in Purple Velvet Fox, he plays in the Dallas-based indie band, Metrograde.

I caught up with Gary this month to get some insight on Purple Velvet Fox and how they’re changing the local music scene in East Texas.

Johnny: So who came up with the idea to start a jazz band, and when did that original brainstorm happen?

Gary: Over the last decade it has been apparent that jazz is a growing genre in East Texas with an increasing interest among both young and old. Baby boomers who grew up on rock are finding the more complex and sophisticated sounds of jazz compelling. Gen X and Millennials as well are being drawn to jazz as much contemporary music has roots in the complex modal harmonies and structure established in jazz. In the various iterations and membership of Purple Velvet Fox over the last decade, we have had members as young as 20 up to baby boomers such as myself.

Most of the musicians who play jazz are also in other bands as well that play other genres of music. So I started PVF as a desire to hear and play jazz as it has increased in popularity.

Johnny: Who were the original members?

Gary: Original members of PVF were myself, Gary Hatcher on guitar, Jacob Wellman on sax, Joe Snyder on drums, Suzie Carter with vocals, and Eric Pardoe on bass. Joe Snyder is the only member who is still in the band that began with the band many years ago.

Jacob Wellman was in the band until last year when he moved to Big D, and Suzie Carter performs with the band occasionally. People move, ambitions change, life evolves and moves on, so we have had probably a dozen or so different members in the past years. Of course, we always have other musicians come and sit in with the band. Trumpet, congas, flute, trombone, we even had a great spoon player sit in with us one night. That was really cool until he laid his special set of spoons on the table and the bus boy picked them up and took them to the kitchen. Poor guy spent about an hour digging through trash in the kitchen!

Johnny: Where did the name Purple Velvet Fox come from, and how tough of a sell was that to the rest of the band?

Gary: The first jazz band I formed was called Off Season Jazz, and we were looking for a name that did several things. First, we wanted something a bit exotic, something that said smooth, something iconic that sparked people’s imagination. As a friend once commented, what could be cooler and more exotic than a “Purple Velvet Fox.” It wasn’t a tough sell at all. Sometimes people look at us a little funny, but they remember the band and the name.

Johnny: When and where was the first Purple Velvet Fox gig?

Gary: Wow, we have played literally hundreds of gigs over the last six years although I am pretty sure our first gig together was in Athens at Tara Winery, six, maybe seven years ago.

Johnny: So there are a few jazz projects playing in and around the Tyler area, but this is still a region dominated by country and rock.

How challenging has it been to find decent gigs around?

Gary: We have had very little trouble booking gigs, and I think that is for several reasons. First, we have some of the best musicians in this part of the country playing with the band. Second, we are organized, professional and have a reputation for putting on a great show. Third, the venues expecting exceptional, quality music is growing. We have played at most of the wineries in East Texas as well as restaurants, festivals, and clubs.

And we play weddings and parties as well. We play most venues that do not necessarily want country or rock.

Johnny: How has the reception been locally for what you guys are doing?

Gary: We have a growing and steady following. Those who appreciate jazz, seek us out and watch our calendar on Reverbnation. com and come to our performance because they know they are going to hear a first-rate jazz band.

Johnny: How often do you play out of this area, and what kind of success have you found outside the local audience?

Gary: We play primarily in the East Texas area 3-6 times per month. Although we all approach the band as professional musicians, we all have other jobs or commitments that limit how many performances we want to do.

Same for venues further away. We have played in Dallas, Shreveport, Houston, and Austin but don’t cultivate areas that far away since it usually involves a two-day commitment due to the distance. We could go on tour, but then as I mentioned, our other interests would have to be changed and significantly adjusted.

Johnny: What have been some of the other challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Gary: When you have a band with 4-6 members, coordinating schedules is always a challenge as we all play in other bands and have other interests, and then we are invited to play and at times it is hard to get all the core members together for the date requested. For that reason, there are always the core members, currently Alex Blair bass, Joe Snyder drums, Sarah Roberts, and then I have other great musicians that I invite to sub. Gary: We all enjoy and play the jazz classics from Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Horace Silver, and many more, but then we have other sounds, bands, and genres that inspire us.

For me, I listen to bands such as Galactic, EST, Gov’t Mule, Medeski Martin & Wood, Al Dimeola, and many more. Of course, I am also influenced by classical music and play classical piano in addition to jazz guitar. The piano works of Chopin, Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach are beautiful and inspiring in their own way. Bach was really the father of contemporary harmony, so we all owe a lot to J.S. Bach.

If you asked each band member you would get a pretty diverse list I am sure.

Johnny: Does PVF do more recognizable jazz songs to get people engaged, or do you rearrange other genre music to fit your format in order to engage audiences that are less familiar with the classics?

Gary: Our set lists are driven by works that we enjoy playing, areas of performance we are challenged by or interested in at the moment, and of course by the music our audience wants to hear. Lately, we have been moving more in the direction of funk, Latin, and fusion jazz.

Johnny: What's on the radar for PVF for the rest of 2017?

Gary: The band is sounding great. We have a number of gigs booked into the fall, and we are always exploring new tunes and original compositions.

We have been nominated once again for Best Jazz Band in the East Texas Music Awards, which we have won for three years and the future looks bright for the Purple Velvet Fox Band.

Old Omen:

Something Bluesy This Way Comes

By Johnny Griffith Tyler is a city with an impressive amount of homegrown talent that spans an eclectic mix of styles. However, it is a fair observation to say that Country and Rock take up a vast majority of the real estate on local stages though recently, acts from other genres, such as Blues, Jazz, and Pop, are making their own place in the musical soul of the city. One of these projects, Lindsay Boone and Grady Axton Davis, the duo known as Old Omen, has brought their love of some of these divergent styles together to create a spooky good blend of gritty, soulful vocals and powerful, bluesy guitar. Together, they’ve been on an upward trajectory as they broaden the auditory palates of local music patrons.

We sat down with the dynamic duo recently to get better acquainted: Johnny: So let’s start with the name of the project: “Old Omen.” What’s the significance of the name?

Grady: I always thought it was a creepy sounding road in Tyler, and it’s always made me laugh. It came up when we were trying to think of a band name. We wanted something with significance to East Texas.

Lindsay: Something that somehow captured our sound too. I love that there could be a great character behind the name. I picture an old guy smoking on his front porch, listening to blues, and I imagine he’d like our songs.

Johnny: Your bio says you met each other at a Beatles tribute show where you subsequently ended up performing a couple of shows together. When and where was this, and how were you two put together at that show?

Lindsay: We both played in these tribute shows that Matt Magill puts together at The Foundry, and became friends through that. We really bonded at the Beatles show because we’re both crazy fans of their music, and ended up talking for hours about 1960’s music and how much we loved it. I’d seen him play; he’d heard me sing, and shortly afterward I sent him what ended up being a pretty important text: “Hey, want to be in a blues band together?” Ha! Johnny: When did you individually first get into music?

Grady: My uncle always played, so I grew up watching him. I was transfixed, watching his fingers, hearing the sounds; I just thought it was awesome. I got a guitar in fifth grade but never played it, and a few years later asked for a telescope for Christmas. My dad reminded me of the guitar I hadn’t played, and I wanted to prove I deserved the telescope, so I started playing that guitar. Then I became absolutely hooked. That Christmas I also used a CD my dad got as a gift to test out my new Discman, and it was the “Best of Cream.” I remember pressing play and hearing this psychedelic Eric Clapton, this nutso guitar, and I knew what I wanted to do in life.

Lindsay: My parents aren'’t musical at all, but thankfully insisted I start piano lessons at eight years old. I devoured every practice book, every piece of sheet music, everything my teacher gave me, and within two years was so tired of playing other people’s stuff that I wanted to write my own. I picked up other instruments along the way, and after hearing jazz vocalists from the 1940’s in college, realized I could use my voice as an instrument, and thankfully, it came easiest to me.

Johnny: Who were your early musical influences?

Grady: Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix.

Lindsay: Fiona Apple, Ella Fitzgerald, Paul McCartney.

Johnny: Obviously you two traveled different stylistic paths to get to where you are to the point where the bio on your website says, “he showed her Led Zeppelin, she showed him Otis Redding.” How do you think those disparate perspectives have helped you craft this unique sound?

Grady: I think your questions answers the question. I bring mashed potatoes, she brings gravy.

Lindsay: He’s M&M’s, and I’m Skittles. Our differences make us so musically strong and create a different sort of blend. You have the super

bluesy, raw, rock-based acoustic guitar with strong jazzy female vocal; it's just a cool sound.

Johnny: Speaking of that sound, it’s been described as “bluesy, swampy, folk-rock.” So break that down for us a bit more. I’ve heard your music, and it seems to me to be like someone took a little bit of Robert Johnson, Stevie Ray, Bonnie Raitt, Brittany Howard, Rolling Stones, tossed them together and sprinkled a bit of Mellencamp over the top for good measure. How would YOU clarify it to someone who hadn't heard you before?

Grady: That sounds good to me!

Lindsay: I’d throw in some Civil Wars and Etta James in there, but that sounds like a major compliment. Any comparison to Brittany Howard is pretty damn flattering.

Johnny: When and where was your first show as “Old Omen?”

Lindsay: We unveiled the name at the next tribute show, a Dolly Parton show, where we did a killer version of “I Will Always Love You,” in a minor key. It was very haunting, totally unlike the original.

Johnny: Are you primarily a duo, or do you gig with a full band sometimes? If you use a band at times, who fills out the stage?

Lindsay: At its heart, Old Omen is a duo, but we do enjoy occasionally playing with a full band. We often ask jazz bassist Chris Pitts to join us, and even do a more classic-rock quartet with drummer Jeff Shelton and bassist Bill Scott.

Johnny: What has been the most memorable moment for you, on or off stage, since you’ve been performing together as Old Omen?

Grady: Lola’s (one of our first gigs) was such a good initial place to play, just honing what we do at a sandwich shop, and having kids come and dance. Also, we’re pretty proud that we’re 100% for country clubs not asking us back.

Lindsay: The first weekend we had three gigs in 24 hours, just living on music and driving around. It was pretty amazing. It showed me how much I wanted my life to be this way.

Johnny: How has the response to this project been so far?

Grady: We hope we are something very different in the Tyler music scene. I think the genres we’re tapping into don’t get on display very often in Tyler, or even outside of Tyler. You don't get just a ton of bluesy soul original music, and I hope people think, “That's a lot of sound for just two people to be producing.”

Johnny: What’s on the horizon for you guys the rest of 2017 and beyond?

Lindsay: We’re so pumped for our first album (self-titled), which will be released on July 22nd and available on iTunes, Spotify, etc.

We're having a big block party outside El Guapo Records and ETX Brewing Co. to promote and celebrate its release. We hope to go on a North Texas tour in August as well, and continue to gig heavily in East Texas.

Johnny: What would you tell someone about to sit down and listen to an Old Omen show to expect?

Lindsay: Something different, something vibrant and original and full of passion. We play with our souls on our sleeves, and I want everyone who hears us to know it. You're just not going to see a guitarist like Grady every day; he plays with such fire and such love for blues and rock, and I’m hoping I can overpower you enough with my voice to feel it in your chest.

October 27th (7:30pm) - “Rosanne Cash: Black List River” - In “Black List River” Rosanne Cash offers a sweeping song cycle culled from her award-winning Southern and soul trilogy of works “Black Cadillac” (2006), “The List” (2009), and “The River and The Thread” (2014). Featuring guitarist and partner John Leventhal and their band, this concert features some of the most acclaimed and beloved music of Rosanne’s career. A Discovery Science Summer There is so much to see and experience

this summer at the Discovery Science Place!

They have a variety of programs, exhibits, and events that are sure to entertain the whole family.

“Wherever your interests lie, or whatever your mission is, we strive to make each trip to our museum memorable, fun, and engaging,” said Chris Rassure, Museum Executive Director.

Exhibits are the Buford Kinetic Gallery, 3D Cinesphere, The Cave, Dino Dig Pit, MesoAmerican Rock Climbing Wall, CBS19 Kids TV Station, Trinity Mother Frances Robotics Exhibit, KO Mine, Orion, Imagination Playground, and DSP Train Set. Full scale exhibits of a Brookshire’s Grocery Store, Southside Bank, Smith County Courthouse, Trinity Mother Frances Neonatal Nursery, Hometown Veterinary Clinic, and One World Bistro are also set-up to explore.

Currently, a huge hit this summer is the “Orion – Journey to Mars” exhibit, which is an original model of one of the early versions of NASA’s Orion space capsule from Johnson Space Center in Houston, with manikins of two astronauts at the controls. The controls are similar to what the controls look like on Orion, NASA’s newest manned space capsule designed to support human exploration missions to multiple destinations in deep space, including back to the Moon and eventually on to Mars.

According to information posted in the space exhibit, the Orion capsule rides atop a new rocket called the space launch system, which is as large as 19 school buses, more than 300 feet tall, and can hold up to four astronauts and their life-support gear.

The space exhibit presents extensive information about the Orion project, plus a remotecontrolled rover on a mock model of Mars’ surface, space artifacts, hands-on activities, a build and launch computer simulation, and many other attractions related to space.

“Although Discovery Science Place is a children’s exhibit, the space exhibit interests a lot of different age groups – both kids and adults,” said Chris Rasure, the Museum Executive Director. “I see more parents and grandparents than kids looking at an anti gravity mirror. If they stand at a certain spot facing the inside corner of the mirror, raise a foot and arm and wave them around, their image in the mirror looks like they are floating in space.

It is a striking sight. Adults also like looking at real NASA space artifacts on loan to the museum,” Rasure said He continues, “Young children can play space-related video games and participate in hands-on activities. For example, they can put

4th annual School is Cool Event set for August 3rd It’s summer but it is not too early to start

preparing for school in the fall. And with that in mind, preparations are underway for the fourth annual School is Cool back-to-school event set for August 3rd at Harvey Convention Center and the Tyler Rose Garden Center. #SchoolisCool offers Smith County families an opportunity to prepare for the new school year. The event is set for 4:30-7:30pm.

The event is sponsored and hosted by the Tyler Area Business Education Council, City of Tyler, and Tyler ISD. LaToya Young, chairwoman of the event and part of the Business Education Council, said organizers are recruiting vendors and contributors for the event with “the main purpose of preparing the community as well as parents for the upcoming school year. We want to have their questions answered and get them as prepared as possible.”

The event features more than 100 vendors and booths, including vision and dental screenings. The event also has offered complementary haircuts and immunizations, but Young said organizers currently are in negotiations to continue offering these services.

This is a good way to show it to kids because they can pick it (a jar of popcorn) up and see how heavy it would be on Earth, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and other planets,” Rasure said. “Someone who weighs 100 pounds on earth would weigh 38 pounds on Mercury and 236 pounds on Jupiter.”

Each additional child is $10 each. It also includes free admission to the museum for a year and a 10% discount to the Museum Store.

Last year’s event drew more than 3,000 people, and the organization was able to hand out almost 2,000 backpacks full of school supplies to families. Young said area residents can donate backpacks and schools supplies, and drop-off locations for collections will be announced soon. The assembly of backpacks will begin in July.

Explore the Universe Visitors to the Center for Earth & Space

Science Education (CESSE) at TJC have a lot to do this month. Along with the ongoing exhibits and productions, these events will take place.

Ticket prices vary depending on activity.

Most shows offer tickets for $5. Tickets for All Day passes are $12 for adults and $9 for students, children, and senior citizens. Individual shows are $7 for adults and $5 for students, children, and senior citizens. Exhibit only is $3. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the front counter or at sciencecenter.tjc.edu.

Rock ‘n Roll Saturday

Rock ‘n Roll Saturday is fun for the entire family. This month the performance is July 15th. “Rock on Demand” fills the entire 40-foot domed theater with vibrant graphics, completely enveloping visitors in a 360-degree view while the 16,000-watt, digital surround sound system plays rock hits ranging from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to The Doors and Aerosmith. Tickets are $5 for each show.

A Star Party Saturday

Ongoing the first Saturday of each month (8pm, 8:30pm, and 9pm), you can see a Star Party in a live presentation in CESSE’s 40-foot planetarium dome. Learn all about the stars, the planets, and the constellations as you take a tour of the night sky and travel to distant planets and beyond.

There will also be a TJC astronomy professor with telescopes set up outside (weather permitting) for you to gaze at the astronomical objects with your own eyes until 10pm.

Best of all, it is completely free!

Willow Lanchester,

Voices Louder Than Words

By Derrick White “At TJC a random stranger told me I should sign up for Derrick White’s painting class. I went home, and registered for the class. Afterwards, I don’t think there is anything that could have kept me from art,” states local Tyler artist Willow Lanchester.

One of the greatest rewards of my teaching career is the human interactions: getting to cross paths with talented, creative, and inspiring individuals. As the decades roll by for me as an art professor the amount of students I have had the pleasure of teaching now number in the thousands. Each passing year and semester contains its own unique groups of standouts. Artist Willow Lanchester is definitely one of these recent standouts for me as well as for the other art professors in our department at Tyler Junior College.

Willow has only been painting and making art for a little over three years. She started taking watercolor classes during her time as the East Texas Honey Princess. At that time Willow was a part of the East Texas Beekeepers Association’s (ETBA) Honey Queen Program, which is a professional public relations internship. As the East Texas Honey Princess, she did public speaking events to educate the public on honey bees and beekeeping. Willow recalls, “After I expressed some interest in drawing, my Queen

Chair signed me up for watercolor classes, so I could develop my artwork to use as a tool for my presentations.

While I served in the Honey Queen Program, I would teach the anatomy of the honey bee by drawing it during my presentations. Because of this my artwork began as, and will continue to be, a form of communication. My art is about making sure my voice is heard. It is also about making sure other people’s voices are heard.”

It was not long after, Willow began at Tyler Junior College, and she was swiftly sucked into the Art Department.

“It quickly began to feel like home,” Willow explained. “Tyler Junior College provided me with an incredibly unique and supportive environment, where I could explore my art and the message I wanted. I am so fortunate to have learned from such talented and supportive faculty. Faculty who are not only dedicated to developing a student’s technical skill, but also the attitudes and thought processes that go into a student’s work. Students are encouraged to go out and exhibit their work, and to participate in, and build community. It is because of this encouragement I was able to continue to develop my voice. One day I hope to do the same for others. I hope one day, I will be able to help develop someone else’s voice,” Willow said.

Willow is inexhaustible in studio art classes, an active member of the art club, and involved in its community service activities as well as being a competent and capable student across campus.

She is the founding member of a new student organization named STAR (Sex Trafficking Awareness and Relief). STAR is an organization based out of the Tyler Junior College Art Department, which is devoted to raising awareness about sex trafficking in the local region. STAR is also focused on raising funds for the survivors of sex trafficking. STAR works closely with Refuge of Light, a home for survivors of sex trafficking, to help raise awareness about this growing problem in East Texas.

One of the goals of STAR is to bring this issue to the attention of people through the arts.

“We are holding art shows, auctions, and live music events, where all the proceeds go to support the Refuge of Light

home,” Willow explained. “Sex Trafficking is a crisis that affects everyone, no matter their age, race, gender, ethnicity, values, religion, or social or economic background. Everyone is harmed by sex trafficking. The aim of STAR is to break down barriers, so we as a community, as a whole, we can come together to put an end to this epidemic exploiting those without a voice,” states this young activist.

Willow exhibits her artwork and participates in juried art shows. She was one of three 20162017 TJC performance grant showcase artist students and received her associate’s degree in art this last spring.

“I have loved exploring new materials and figuring out how they work together,” Willow said. My work currently has been predominantly ink, charcoal, or acrylic. If one day I lost all of my art supplies, I would still make art out of garbage or anything I could find. A lot of my work comes from a compulsive need to create. I will use any materials available to me so my work has become very process oriented. My work is about getting lost in the process and letting go of everything preventing me from creating. It’s about letting go of everything quieting my voice,” states the artist.

Willow finds inspiration in the work of artists like Hung Liu (a Chinese-American artist who currently resides in California who bases most of her work on historical Chinese photographs).

Willow says, “Liu’s work deals with the study of memory and the human condition. She examines how individuals and their lives can be so swiftly lost to the past. It’s the study of how quickly the individual can be lost to history, but at the same time she tells the viewer how that does not make

the individual any less important. Her work is a study in empathy ensuring the viewer sees the subject of her work as an individual who had a life and thoughts of their own just like them.”

Those with a voice louder than words.

Willow states, “Art has given me a voice and a platform from which I can use that voice in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Art and those who have taught me have given me the confidence that what I have to say means something, that my voice matters. Art has given me a foundation, a confidence, and security so I am no longer looking for help. Instead I can help someone else who needs it.”

Through August 20th: “Double Take: Works by Ed Blackburn” Tyler Museum of Art’s summer blockbuster stars the cinema paintings of Texas artist Ed Blackburn. This solo show organized by the TMA, highlights the acclaimed Texas artist’s ongoing fascination with popculture, particularly movies.

The 30-plus paintings, prints, and lithographs gathered from public and private collections throughout the region, distill scenes from iconic films ranging from the Elvis Presley vehicle “Tickle Me” to the noir classic “The Big Heat.”

Ed Blackburn was born in Amarillo in 1940. He earned a degree in art from The University of Texas at Austin in 1962 and a master’s degree from The University of California at Berkeley a few years later.

Throughout his long career, Blackburn has painted images and made prints based on people who inhabit the worlds of politics, news, cinema, and popular culture. His art, which sometimes combines text and image, is in numerous private collections and the permanent collections of Houston Museum of Fine Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and Tyler Museum of Art. “He (Blackburn) has a prolific body of work, and over his career has been interested in a lot of things,” Bell says. “Much of his work has pop cultural references, but he’s always exploring many ideas.”

For his cinema series, Blackburn painted scenes from movies that star Hollywood icons, such as Elvis Presley, Hopalong Cassidy, Marilyn Monroe, and Gregory Peck The painting of Peck comes from “Marooned,” a 1969 movie in which he plays an astronaut stranded in space. Elvis is depicted in a scene from “Tickle Me,” a 1965 musical in which he plays a singing bullrider working at a dude ranch.

Blackburn sometimes inserts the unexpected. In “Elvis/Blue Boy Still Life” he superimposed “Blue Boy,” a portrait painted in 1797

by Thomas Gainsborough, on top of Elvis in a fight scene. The art is displayed as an installation. In front of the painting is a wooden table holding objects that seem to mimic a Cezanne still life.

Blackburn says he combines things that don’t go together in order to create tension.

“I think that’s what good art always does in a way. It makes you see things different.”

Blackburn says he is attracted to images from cinema because they hold multiple layers of meaning and create different responses based on the viewer’s knowledge and feelings about the movie and actor.

“All the choices - the particular scenes, with the particular actors - are to establish a certain esthetic identity when the movie image exists as a painting. I think also in a painting of a movie that works well, you don’t really forfeit any aspect of the movie but just connect with it by a different route.”

Those unfamiliar with the movie or actor can still appreciate the image as art. Blackburn says, “Any visual image has the ability to explain itself completely. That might even be what a visual image actually is. The trick though is you have to be able to see it.”

“Double Take” challenges people to look at sometimes familiar images and see them in a new way.

Georgia, the works in this highly anticipated exhibition represent a cross-section of some of the most iconic output from history’s most celebrated purveyor of Pop Art. The subjects range from the dark (Dracula) to the whimsical (Howdy Doody, Mickey Mouse), creating a cross-section of Americana through the lens of Warhol’s singular vision. “The name recognition that comes with Warhol is an immediate draw in the art world, and we anticipate this exhibition easily to be among the 10 most popular in the TMA’s history.” The exhibition continues through January 7th, 2018.

Summer Art Camps There is still time to sign your children up for these fun Summer Camps! Close to 70 kids ages 7-13 and older dive into hands-on art experiences in a series of half-day and full-day camps. Each session is supervised by degreed artists and educators, and culminates with a small exhibition of campers’ work and a community reception.

This Month at Gallery Main Street Gallery Main Street is an arts hub for the community throughout the year.

A new and unique exhibit is on display at the Gallery located at 110 W. Erwin St., Downtown Tyler.

July 8th, the opening of “Color Blind(ed)” will take place during Hit the Bricks. Gallery Main Street features a new exhibit of original art approximately every eight weeks. Each exhibit opens with a Saturday evening reception starting at 5:30pm and features music, an opportunity to meet the artists, refreshments, and more. The Opening Receptions are free and open to the public.

Topscoring pieces are selected for exhibit, and the piece with the highest score receives a Best in Show award.
