The Dunking Booth will feature Tiger Creek’s staff, so pick your favorite staff member and purchase as many dunks as you want. It’s going to be a scorcher so we’re sure they won’t mind. All proceeds benefit Tiger Creek’s Big Cat Enrichment Program. This day-long event celebration will feature a concept called “enrichment” which is meant to improve the cats’ environment and care based on their natural behaviors and instincts. Not Slowing Down:

Jenn Ford & The Wide Eyed Devils By Johnny Griffith If there was a trophy given out for “Most Irons in The Fire,” it would have Jenn Ford’s name all over it. The native East Texan wears many hats: mother, veteran, vocalist, guitarist, awards ceremony host, and now...front woman for Jenn Ford & The Wide Eyed Devils. The last time we talked with Jenn, she was focusing on songwriting, working on an album, and the possibility of a permanent backing band was on the horizon. Now, a year later, she’s got that band and is as busy as ever. Somehow we got her to stop long enough to see what’s going on: Johnny: I described you, in our last interview, as “one of the hardest working women in the East Texas music scene” simply based on the amount of projects you’d been involved with since moving back. Have you slowed down any? Jenn: Nope. Lol! Not at all. I am busier than ever. I had 17 shows in December and I’m playing several festivals this season. I’m co-hosting the Texas Country Music Awards for the third time in a row, and this year it’s at Billy Bob’s in Ft. Worth. We played at Rustic Tap in Austin during SXSW, and I just got signed to a new label out of Nashville, B and G Records. Johnny: In the time since our last interview, you’ve started a new music project, “Jenn Ford And The Wide Eyed Devils.” Obviously we know who Jenn Ford is but tell us, who are these “Wide Eyed Devils?” Jenn: It’s basically all the best musicians I could ask for as a band. Chris Dean has been playing with me for a year, even before I gave the band a name. We got Warren Worsham on bass last July, and David Sweat on drums in November. We just

added Danny Davis on keys, and I am stoked. Chris laughs at me because I’ve been saying it for a year or more that I wanted someone to play the organ/ piano. Danny just hit me up on Facebook out of the blue, asking if I would be interested in adding a keys player, it was like winning the lottery. We rotate out rhythm guitar players for now, because a lot of them play in more than one band. Chris Rasco has played with us, Matt Jackson has played guitar and drums with us. Zach Terry played for almost a year, and Mark Shepherd Hill sits in whenever he wants. I’m lucky to have a lot of friends who just happen to be musicians and dig what we are doing. Nick Brumley played at my wedding 2 years ago, and then he was on stage with us Memorial Day weekend for a festival. Johnny: You’ve been involved in several different projects over the past few years, but had been focusing on your album and mostly acoustic shows. What convinced you the time had come for a full band? Jenn: When the album was finished, I definitely needed a band. I had written the songs for a big sound. I just wasn’t sure how that would translate until Chad Mauldin pulled it all together last spring in his new studio. I made a conscious decision to make a country record, only because I was signed under Texas Country Records. Chad told me I still had a lot of rock ‘n roll in my sound, but if you listen to the radio, Texas music has evolved in recent years. Everything is influenced by everything these days. I’m country because I’m from the country. I live next to a pasture. I grew up in the woods. I drank out of the hose and played Dixie League Softball. I like fried chicken and back roads. I have a thick East Texas accent when I’m not paying attention, and I scream louder at high school football games than any other mom. Johnny: When and where was your first show with the new band? Jenn: Probably at Clicks Live in Tyler last fall. I named the band because I felt like I can’t have this sound without them. It feels like a club, like a family, and they are all very good at following each other. I’ve sung so many styles, with a lot of great musicians, but this recent sound had been kind of stirring in me for years, probably decades. Every show I see us getting more and more in sync. Sometimes I forget there’s even an audience because we are hitting it right on the money, and I just smile. Johnny: What is your favorite memory so far with the Devils? Jenn: I would say when we played in Austin at the Rustic Tap. We kind of lucked out with that show. No one knew who we were except my friends from TCMA and a few East Texas folks. We practiced hard on that set for 3 weeks and went down there and hit a home run. Lots of head nods. Lots of handshakes from people way more famous than me. Johnny: So you’ve been known to tackle just about any genre that comes your way. What style would you say Jenn Ford And The Wide Eyed Devils focuses on? Jenn: I think we are focusing on Southern sounds, so that could mean a lot of things. We like to keep stirring the pot. We like Texas music. We like soulful, bluesy, moving riffs. So yeah, that’s what we are focusing on. Music that gets people moving. Johnny: You were almost done with a full EP

the last time we sat down. What’s the latest on that? Jenn: Well, like I said, new label, so it’s gonna be rereleased nationally, and very very soon...like this month. Johnny: What is coming up the back half of 2019 that has you excited? Jenn: Well my full band is playing at the Vette City Motorcycle Fest in Bowling Green, Kentucky in September, the same day as Colt Ford. That’s pretty exciting. Also there’s talk of some more music videos being filmed, and studio time. We’ve started writing more tunes. Johnny: What can people expect at their first Jenn Ford And The Wide Eyed Devils show? Jenn: Dynamic, high energy, moving music. We want you to be entertained. We wanna surprise you. We want you to say, “Wow, they just pulled that off. And it was good.” Johnny: I hear you’ve got a birthday coming up. Any specific birthday wishes? Jenn: I want women to feel empowered by the music we perform. I want little girls to look at me and see strength. I want people to feel like they can overcome anything. Music is my medicine. It most definitely helped me overcome some hard times, and gave me a way to express myself. I hope I can encourage others to do the same. It’s Heating up the Big Stage with Big Concerts This Summer

“There’s nothing to do in East Texas!” We’ve all heard someone say this but we have to argue that this is totally not true. There are thousands of things to do, including watching some pretty big names in the music industry gracing our stages. Here are some upcoming concerts we think you need to know about. Be sure to get tickets soon before they sell out. July 4th, 11am: Uncle Kracker Country rocker Uncle Kracker will headline this year’s July 4th Fireworks and Freedom Celebration in Longview. Local band Dagnabbit is also scheduled to perform the free concert, which will be held just before the biggest fireworks show in East Texas. The event will be July 4th at the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Complex, 100 Grand Blvd. Other activities scheduled during the celebration include rides, bounce houses and other inflatables, a water foam spray area, weenie dog races, a motorcycle ride, a car show, Family Feud, two entertainment stages, food, beverages, and vendors. Admission to the festival, concert, and fireworks show is free. Prices vary for individual activities and rides. For vendor and sponsorship information, call (903)237-1230. July 27th, 8pm: Ray Wylie Hubbard at Texas Music City Grill As a general rule, Ray Wylie Hubbard doesn’t really cater to nostalgia. Although he’s been credited (or blamed, as he’s prone to put it dryly) for penning

one of the defining anthems of the entire 1970s progressive country movement, the Oklahomaborn, Texas-reared living legend has spent the last quarter century in constant pursuit of new artistic vistas and challenges, reinventing and redefining his musical identity every step of the way. Always a generous performer, he’ll still serve up that “obligatory encore” (all together now: “And it’s up against the wall, REDNECK MOTHER!”) with characteristic good humor, but he certainly hasn’t rested on his laurels as one of the most respected artists in modern Americana - not to mention in the storied pantheon of Texas poet troubadours. This concert will be at Texas Music City Grill, located at 55 Miranda Lambert Way in Lindale. Tickets are available at texasmusiccity.net. July 27th, 8pm: The Marshall Tucker Band & The Band of Heathens at The Oil Palace For one night only, come and enjoy a night indoors and out of the heat and humidity. The Marshall Tucker Band will be joined by The Band of Heathens and also Steppenwolf Revisited featuring two former members of the band. Tickets start at only $25. The Oil Palace is located at 10408 Hwy. 64, Tyler. Tickets are available at oilpalace.com or call (903)566-2122. July 27th 5pm: Koe Wetzel at Texas Balloon Race, Longview Koe Wetzel and Cody Wayne will headline The Great Texas Balloon Race of East Texas in Longview. The concert will be at 200 Airpark Drive, Longview. Tickets are available at outhousetickets.com/ Event/11853-Great_Texas_Balloon_Race. August 30th, 7pm: The Isaacs at Bergfeld Park, Tyler The Isaacs, a multi-award winning family group who began singing 30 years ago, are based out of Nashville, TN. The vocalists are Lily Isaacs, Ben Isaacs, Sonya Isaacs Yeary and Rebecca Isaacs Bowman. This will be an outside concert, held at Bergfeld Park, located at 1510 S. College Ave. in Tyler. This is a free concert. September 1st, 7:30: Kansas at Belcher Center, Longview Throughout the summer of 2019, KANSAS will be performing a set of KANSAS Radio Classics. Fans will hear songs they have heard on the radio, Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, and Classic MTV since 1974. With more Top 100 hits in the set than ever before, KANSAS Fans will also hear some classic B-Sides, fan favorites, and material off the band’s latest studio album, “The Prelude Implicit.” Belcher Performance Center at LeTourneau University is located at 2100 S. Mobberly, Longview. For more info and tickets, call (903)233-3080 or go to belchercenter.com.

Good Times Just Ahead:

6 Miles to Mixon By Johnny Griffith There’s a new band in town. Okay, perhaps it’s more accurate to say there is a bunch of seasoned musicians who decided to get together, start something new, and now they’re making waves on stages all over the area. 6 Miles to Mixon is a collaboration of Matt and Rick Kindle, Gary Henson, Eric Dobbins, and Roy Hufstetler that has decades of experience in various other projects from all over this hemisphere. We caught up to the band this month to find out more about them. Johnny: How did you all individually get started in music? Gary: My Dad is a musician and I started going to his band’s rehearsals at around age 5 or 6. I started playing drums around age 8 or 9 and was playing gigs with my Dad by age 12. Rick: I’ve been singing my whole life since starting in church but my first group was a doo wop quartet! It was a blast.. that’s where I fell in love with harmonies. Matt: I got my singing from my dad, Rick. I have been singing all my life. Got my first guitar when I was 12 and I taught myself by watching the guys in my dad’s band. I joined his band when I was 17. Also, during my junior high and high school years, I played the trumpet which helped teach me a lot about reading music and music theory. I played in various country or rock bands during my years of education. I came back to Tyler in 2012 and my dad and I joined with a few guys to form what was called Texas Rebellion. We formed 6 Miles to Mixon at the end of 2017. Roy: 6th grade band. I played drums/percussion all the way through high school. In 9th grade, I started playing bass in orchestra and electric bass in the high school jazz band. I actually lettered in Bass for Orchestra. Eric: My love for music started when I was nine years old and took lessons from famed guitarist Larry Stanley in Tyler. I have played professionally since age 13, with my mom as my biggest fan. She was a music major in college and supported me all the way, even driving me back and forth to gigs. Since then

I’ve had the privilege to work with some amazing acts along the way on stages like Billy Bob’s Texas, Stage Door, and The Opryland Hotel in Nashville. I even did a tour of South America for American Airlines promoting a non-stop flight from DFW to Lima, Peru. Johnny: How did you guys meet? 6MtM: Gary was the common ground we all shared. He played in a band with Matt and Rick, and he had also played with Eric and Roy. Gary saw some potential with this lineup so we decided to go for it. The stars aligned and 6 Miles to Mixon was born. Johnny: What about the name? What’s the story behind 6 Miles To Mixon? 6MtM: We had been toying around with different local town names and landmarks to describe who we are and where we are from. Mixon was a town name that kept popping up. Rick was driving down the road one day and saw a sign that said “Mixon 7 (miles)” but he thought “6” was catchier. He called Matt, who liked it, so it stuck. Johnny: So would your style be described as primarily country or do you have a more accurate description? 6MtM: We would say Country with a Rock kick, and Rock with a splash of country. We ease people in with some Country and it’s what our fans like to dance to. We really like to kick it up with some Rock after things get pumping. It just feels natural. Johnny: How would you describe a typical 6 Miles show? 6MtM: Pretty high energy! We’d rather people get up and dance. Don’t sit...get up and move. We are professional musicians and singers, but it really boils down to that we are just a group of guys wanting to have a good time, and we want the crowd to have a good time with us. We play George Strait, Keith Urban, Merle Haggard, Jason Aldean, Jon Pardi, Chris Stapleton, Garth Brooks, and many more, but we will also throw in some Tom Petty, The Eagles, Bad Company, Journey, Ed Sheeran, Prince, and some funk tunes. We play fun songs. We honor requests when possible because between all the experience in the band we have played just about everything at least once. Johnny: Is a normal set primarily covers or do you have some originals you are working in as well? 6MtM: We primarily play covers, but we will throw in a few songs that Matt has written. We are

currently playing five originals per night. We don’t wanna overwhelm people with stuff they don’t know. But it’s funny, after people have seen us a time or two, we’ll see people singing along with the originals. The self titled EP, “6 Miles to Mixon,” hit digital stores on June 19, 2019. Stream or download the songs before you come to our show for the first time or even if you have seen our show several times. We think you’re gonna like what you hear! And, when you do, it won’t be “stuff you don’t know” anymore. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you booking? 6MtM: We play anywhere from two to six shows per month. We want to do more, and we’d like to spread to other areas. We’ve been together for only a year and a half so we hope word will get out about us and we can get into some of these venues where people are saying we need to play. Johnny: Are you staying pretty local to East Texas or are you branching out of the area? 6MtM: Local right now, but we hope to spread further out. In past bands, we have individually played all over Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma. Johnny: What are some “must see” shows coming up for the band the rest of the year? 6MtM: We like to think all of them are “must see,” but the Fireworks show at Pleasant Hill

Baptist Church in Tyler on July 3rd is going to be amazing. It will be very high energy and a good all around time. If you can’t make that event, catch us whenever you can. We’d love to see you have a dancing good time out there. Check out 6 Miles to Mixon at facebook. com/6milestomixon/ and 6milestomixon.com/.

All Aboard The Psychobilly Death Train:

Michael Morse By Johnny Griffith

The East Texas music scene is surprisingly diverse once you look past the incorrect assumption that the only two types of bands in the area are country or metal. With the plethora of musicians this area produces, though, it is sometimes hard to stand out in the crowded field of performers. This isn’t a problem Michael Morse has. Born in Tyler, raised primarily in NYC, and now living back in Tyler, Morse is a multiinstrumentalist who embraces the ART side of artist and takes you on a musical adventure of his own making every show. We recently caught up to Michael to get to know him better: Johnny: So what is your earliest memory of music in your life? Michael: Music has always been there. I don’t know about the “earliest, but I have a vivid memory of my mother putting on a record, either a Beatles or Paul McCartney solo album, and watching it spin. That was pretty magical. I was taken to the Oil Palace several times as a small child to see various country singers. Though that music didn’t stick with me, it was my first exposure to live music in general, which became very important to my life in multiple ways. Johnny: When did you start taking an interest in music as a hobby? Michael: Music isn’t a hobby, it’s an essential part of life. To me, learning to play an instrument is a natural extension of enjoying music. I think, subconsciously, I always wanted to play the guitar, guitars are just flipping cool. I was too shy to express that though. At age 13, my mother told me I had to learn an instrument, any instrument. There was never any question for me about which instrument, it was always going to be the guitar. Luckily my mother had a nylon-string classical which became mine. I’m very grateful for that push. The obsession snowballed from there. Johnny: Who were some of your early influences musically and who was an early mentor? Michael: I have a lot of influences. A lot of typical ones like The Beatles and Bob Dylan, but also some others that may not be so typical. I feel like I have eclectic tastes, and influences can manifest in different ways. Every influence doesn’t come out in every performance. Some of my all time favorites include (but are not limited to) The Velvet Underground, Robert Johnson, Woody Guthrie, Violent Femmes, Chuck Berry, Devo, Hank Williams, The Stooges, Buddy Holly, Mississippi John Hurt, Ramones, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, T. Rex, Howlin’ Wolf, The Clash, The White Stripes, The Sonics, Cream, Cab Calloway, David Bowie, Leadbelly, Earl Scruggs, Johnny Burnette, Ukulele Ike, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Pixies, Little Walter, The Band, solo Beatles, The Beach Boys...I could go on and on and on. I love music so much. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a real musical mentor, at least not someone I knew personally. Bob Dylan has probably provided the most inspiration and guidance in a way. He was never content to stay the same for too long. He was able to change and let his songs change with him. Johnny: Do you have a “style you feel you fit into? Michael: I hope not. I’m sure people who have seen me might associate me with a specific genre or two but I try to always include variety. People tend to like to attach labels and group things together that aren’t really the same thing. I play a broad spectrum of American folk. That includes blues, old

time, rock, punk, etc. Johnny: Are you primarily a solo act or do you collaborate with other artists frequently? Michael: I’m primarily solo, though not necessarily by choice. I love to play with other people though I find meeting musicians who share similar views about life/music and how to approach making it can be difficult. An unfortunate fact about musicians is that if you want to keep a band together, you need to be able to pay a band to stay. There’s not enough opportunity to make enough money for me to do that. Drummers are especially fickle. The stool that a drummer sits on is literally called a “throne. That should tell you everything you need to know about drummers. There is a lovely freedom in playing alone though. I’m free to experiment with tempo and transitions at a whim, which you can’t do with most bands. It’s hard to find other musicians who can click with you in that way. Johnny: How much of a typical set is originals versus covers? Michael: That really depends on where I’m playing and for how long. It also depends on whether or not there’s an audience, because unfortunately sometimes there isn’t one, and how they’re responding. If a crowd is not engaging, I’ll start to experiment a little more. I’ll improvise and try out new songs. It’s difficult to get people to listen to a song they don’t know but I feel it’s important for me as an artist, if that’s what I’m supposed to be, to make sure my original work at least gets a chance to be heard. Johnny: What is your favorite cover tune to do? What is your favorite original? Michael: I really enjoy playing early rock ’n roll/rockabilly songs. Lately I’ve been stringing a bunch together in a long, fast medley I’m calling “Rockabilly Medley in E, which features songs by Carl Perkins, Johnny Burnette, Elvis, Bo Diddley, and Buddy Holly. I may keep adding to it, till it gets to the point that I collapse at the end. My favorite original is probably a song called “Hopeless Case. It’s a pretty simple song about realizing love is inconvenient and resisting the urge to fall into it. It builds to a Bo Diddley beat and ends somewhat abruptly, which always confuses the audience. That amuses me. Johnny: So speaking of originals, I have to ask what was the inspiration behind “Psychobilly Death Train Blues (in A)? Michael: That song is really just an exercise in rockabilly tropes. Something fun and fast. Johnny: How was the process of making that album and what did you take from that experience moving forward? Michael: “A Strange Thing is more a compilation than a proper album. I was frequently asked if I had CD’s for sale at gigs, so I finally put one together. It’s a collection of some of my folkier songs recorded over a few years, that I thought might be pleasing for people seeing me in my usual acoustic setting. There’s touches of rockabilly, blues, even a little classic country. Johnny: What can first time listeners expect from a Michael Morse show? Michael: Energy, speed, dry humor. That stuff is always there, but on occasion I’ll add something different. I play a little banjo sometimes. I recently played a local Jazz Festival where I included a mini set of original ukulele-based jazz songs. For that part of the show I performed as a character, a leftover golden age jazz crooner who somehow found himself in the 21st century. I don’t do that often. Johnny: What was the last song you dialed up to listen to? Michael: Probably “Hang On To Me as performed by Cliff “Ukulele Ike Edwards. He’s most remembered as the voice of Jiminy Cricket, but was a big star in the 20’s/30’s. He was a fireball of a performer and the best scat singer put to record. There’ a great clip of him performing the song in a color short from the 30’s in circulation. It’s sweet and silly. Catch what Michael is up to at facebook.com/ MichaelMorseMakesMusic/.

Road Warrior:

Cody Wayne By Johnny Griffith Cody Wayne just doesn’t know how to stop. Since we last spoke to him, almost two years ago, Cody has been on a mission to bring seriously good music to anyone who will put him on a stage. With a high energy show, one of the best bands around, and a growing list of superb originals, Wayne feels like his best days are in front of him. We sat back down with Cody this month to get an update on what’s new in his world. Johnny: It’s been a couple of years since we last talked and it’s been a busy couple of years we’ve got to catch up on so let’s start with the band. What is the current lineup? Cody: I am very lucky with the group of musicians that are in our current lineup. Trent Procell plays bass and is the guy who really put everything together. I’ve known him for about 10 years, and I started trying to get him to play bass for me since 2011. I finally convinced him to join me, and he brought in Zach Early on guitar and Tyler Williamson on drums. Vic Andrews is our fiddle, harmonica, dobro, shoestring, spoons, and pretty much he can get his hands on. Trent, Zach, and Tyler have been playing together for their entire lives, and it’s amazing to watch what they can do on stage. Music has been a huge part of these guys’ lives since birth, and it shows when they play. I’m very lucky and thankful to have them. Johnny: About how many shows a month are you guys averaging these days? Cody: Usually, we average anywhere from 10 to 15 shows a month. Like any business, having a band is up and down. We’ve had times where we’ve played 20 shows in 7 days all the way from Texas to Minnesota. We’ve been very lucky for that demand for our music, and we are very thankful for that. Johnny: What has been the most memorable gig the last couple of years? Cody: Honestly, there have been so many amazing, landmark, and bucket list shows it’s hard to pinpoint one. One that really made me sit back and say, “Man! Did we really just do that?” Was getting to open for Alan Jackson at the San Antonio Rodeo. I never sat down and thought about what we were actually doing until he got on stage and sang every song that I grew up on. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. Johnny: What have been the biggest challenges you and the band have dealt with since we last talked? Cody: Being away from my/our families. The band is great and everyone gets along so well that it makes the road life a lot easier. We are all also very family-oriented, and being away is hard. Family comes first, and the band comes second. Johnny: What is the biggest thing that helps you push through the grind and sacrifice being a professional musician extracts? Cody: Family! My beautiful wife Tamra is really the method behind the madness. She knew how to turn a hobby into a career. She also keeps the schedule full, merch stocked, social media up to date, and keeps the house running while I am gone. And that goes for all of our member’s families. It takes a lot of hard work, sacrifice, and love to keep the band moving. Johnny: So you’ve recently enjoyed a pretty good run on the Texas Regional Radio Report Top 100 Chart with your single “Small Town.” Tell us a little about that experience, how it feels to be a top 20 artist in Texas, sitting above some rather legendary names by the way. Cody: I still can’t believe it honestly. Tamra and I do all of our radio promotions as well. To have our name next to the likes of Randy Rogers Band, Aaron Watson, Kevin Fowler, and all the greats is mindblowing. I honestly could never imagine that a song I wrote sitting at

A D

my kitchen table would be a Top 20 single. Johnny: Your next single set to release is “Remember The Lost Ones.” What inspired the song, and how do you feel you being a Marine gave you a unique perspective in the writing process? Cody: I started writing this song when I got back from Iraq. I wanted to tell a firstperson point of view story about the war that up until that point hadn’t been done that I knew of. It had always been from the 3rd person perspective. However, once I started writing, I had an overwhelming sense of grief and selfishness. It was almost like shame because I made it back. I could tell my story. There are so many service members that don’t have a voice anymore because they gave their lives for me/us to be here and be able to write songs. So I let the song say what it felt like it wanted to say. Literally up to when I was driving to the studio, the words were still changing and becoming something those who are no longer with us would be proud of. Also, I wanted the listener to see and feel this song before they heard it. From the first note of the lone dobro, to the kick drum that sounds like a distant mortar shell exploding, to the snare drum that sounds like a 5 round burst from a machine gun, I wanted the listeners to be able to close their eyes and see the dirt, smell the sweat, and hear the sounds of war and get the first person perspective that way. It’s still hard for me to sing this song, but I hope it gives a voice to the ones who gave it all up. Johnny: You’ve got some fun shows coming up the back half of the year. Anything you’re really excited about? Cody: Absolutely! On July 27th, we get to open for Koe Wetzel at the Great East Texas Balloon Race. He is a fellow East Texan and one of the hottest acts in Texas currently. This is a huge and professionally run event every year that does great things for our area. To have two East Texas boys playing this year is something I think we can all be proud of. Plus, we have a lot of energy that we bring, and they have a lot of energy that they bring so it’s gonna be one of the biggest events of the year. Johnny: What’s the next big move for you and the band? New album? Tour more outside of Texas? Cody: We are always writing and integrating new songs into the set so we can get an idea if the people like them. My song “Fly High” is going to be in a bull riding documentary coming soon. I am always working with the USO, Boots for Troops, and The Boot Campaign, local VFWs, and other veterans organizations to help bring awareness and help for fellow service members. Johnny: Okay, last question: Who do you listen to when you need a break from writing or performing and just want to get lost in some music? Cody: My playlist usually consists of Jason Boland, The Cadillac Three, The Black Crowes, Chris LeDoux, and Trent Willmon. One day I am going to write a song with Trent Willmon - he just doesn’t know it yet. So Trent, if you happen to read this, let’s make it happen. Johnny: Anything else on your mind before we wrap it up? Cody: I want to give credit where credit is due. None of this would be possible if it weren’t for my family. We literally do everything ourselves, and I want to give them the “thank you” they deserve. They inspire the songs I write, and they are the ones that help them come to life. To everyone who has ever come to a show, listened to a song, bought merch, or told someone about a song of ours, I want to give a huge “thank you” as well. Every tomorrow is because of the people who help today. Thank you for the love and support, and we’ll see you down the road.

Healthy Summer Meals for Kids and Families at NET Health WIC Clinics

Children 18 and under are welcome to join NET Health at lunchtime for a free lunch during the Summer Food Program at both Tyler WIC locations (815 N. Broadway and 225 E. Amherst); and at the WIC clinics in Athens, Canton, Palestine, Jacksonville, Henderson, and Marshall. WIC is hoping to offer meals and snacks to children as they come in for appointments during the summer months. A snack is also provided from 1-3pm each day. A WIC employee will facilitate lunch and a snack each day, and even include some games or activities most days. Attendance is free and the free Summer Food Program will be at Tyler WIC clinics every Monday-Friday until August 16th. “Since many kids depend on school meals, these lunches will help bridge the gap for parents who struggle to feed active kids who are home during those long summer days,” says Jennifer Lassiter, Assistant Director of the NET Health WIC Program. “For families who aren’t familiar with WIC, joining in at lunch time will allow families time to learn about our services provided to families with children under the age of five years old.” The Farmers’ Market of East Texas and Rose City Farmers’ Market also operate at WIC locations on Thursdays in July. These markets are open to the community, and families who qualify for WIC may also be eligible to receive voucher booklets to use at the local farmers’ markets. WIC will issue the booklets at: • WIC Farmers’ Market – Thursdays in July at both Tyler WIC locations, 8:30am-12 noon • Farmers’ Market of East Texas – open Saturdays for voucher booklets 7am-1pm at 2112 W. Front Street (within the East Texas Fairgrounds Pavilion) • Rose City Farmers’ Market – open Saturdays for voucher booklets 8am-12 noon at 302 S. Broadway Ave. (parking lot by Unclaimed Furniture) A variety of colorful produce in your diet means naturally adding antioxidants and vitamins that you may not get otherwise. Many fruits and veggies have fiber as well and a water content that helps keep you hydrated in the hot summer months. WIC is excited to offer families the option to feed their children during the summertime and provide farmers’ market voucher booklets to help stock their pantry with produce. For more information on these summer events, contact WIC offices at (903)593-8331. The Experience in Edom, A New, Groovy & Totally Cool Spot By Barbara Greenbauer Open the front door to a cacophony of color, fabrics, and the most inviting space imaginable and you’ve entered “The Experience,” nestled in the heart of Edom, just a mere 25 miles from Tyler. It’s an artisan’s dream come true, and is the vision of Kelli “Cayenne” Holmes and her husband, Don Hendrickson, longtime community collaborators and supporters of Edom. Moving into a much larger space across the main drag in Edom has given Kelli the room to enlarge, expand, and focus on her own personal style and passion; and grow “The Experience” into a space that embraces art, great food, and community. “I like to describe it as “fun-shui” says Kelli, who is a fireball of energy, humor, and huge personality combined. The space is definitely an outlet for Kelli’s creativity, love for life, and appreciation of everything with flair and funk. “It’s kind of a mix of 70’s Jimi Hendrix motif, and the signature vignette seating arrangements reflect a kind of bohemian, eclectic style,” explained Kelli. The Experience begins on the outside patio space where you can grab a cup of coffee or tea and hang out to watch the goings on in Edom. Beautiful metal sculptures by local artists Jan & Craig Blackmon are featured in the front area with loads of room to spread out and read or play games. Inside is a taste treat for the senses, with riotous artwork lining the walls; and the most inviting seating areas, including couches, settees, and an armoire filled to the brim with games and puzzles. It’s definitely a space that is fluid and organic; every corner you turn has a different feature and feel. Kelli’s own “Buffalo Clover” assortment of frilly, whimsical garments feature repurposed vintage slips, gowns, and bedjackets re-envisioned into edgy, romantic outerwear that are truly masterpieces in themselves. Hand-dyed and lovingly fashioned, they are designed to bring out the feminine, funky version of yourself. You can choose a hat and match it with jewelry and a headband, or pick up a hand-dyed tie if the mood hits you. “No two pieces are the same,” Kelli said, “and I travel all over to find unique embellishments for each one.” Friends and neighbors Sharon Thompson and Mark Mynatt from the Dallas area were “enjoying this new beautiful space. We have always appreciated Kelli’s taste, style, and uniqueness and are just loving the creativity and openness of this new place,” said Sharon. Sharon and Mark found a treasure trove of items they loved, and left happily with original pieces of jewelry and a tie. No space could be more perfectly named, from the ambience to the offerings. You can soak up the atmosphere while feasting on some incredible edibles as well. Kelli and Don have brought in chef Michael Smith, affectionately known as “Chef Hobbles,” to work his magic with fresh, creative concepts and food fusions. “The BrouHaHa Bistro food experience is a mix of Southern California meets East Texas,” explains Chef Hobbles. “It’s a wild and wonderful food adventure, almost a play with food, with lots of different taste options,” he said. Starting the day off with one of Chef Hobbles’ hand-made “Doe-nuts,” available at 6am, including taste sensations like mocha cappuccino, maple, and brown sugar cinnamon, will forever spoil you with their richness and flavor. “We hope to have the first ever drive- through in Edom in the near future, where travelers through town can pick up a doe-nut

and coffee and start their day,” explained Kelli. The doe-nuts are incredible, but wrap your brain around some other delights, like breakfast “trucker” tacos named The Three Little Pigs, The Tractor Pull, The Long Haul, and the Early Riser. Tempting Toasts may entrance you with options like Avocado, Green Tomato, and Sausage Egg and Cheese Biscuit. Chef Hobbles cooks all day and night and the neat thing about the menu is that he will cook you almost anything at any time. Fancying breakfast for dinner, talk to the Chef and he will make it happen! Fresh and delicious sandwiches are what’s on tap for lunch, with fresh meats and cheeses and a soup of the day. Dinner is divine and on the menu are appetizers like sea pig crostini, brushetta, smoked okra, and loaded hummus. Main entrees are magnificent, including spaghetti with marinara or meat sauce, sage and garlic pork chop, chicken picatta or steak rolls. Chef Hobbles and Kelli are constantly cooking up new events to showcase their “foodie” ways, including a recent Father’s Day brunch featuring succulent Prime Rib and a “Whole Lot of Italian/ Little Bit of Greek Feast with selections like Linguine with Greek Tomato Sauce and Bacon Carbonara. Currently, it’s a BYOB scenario with reservations appreciated for the special event dinners. So, we’ve covered the art, food and wine…now on to the inner core and the serenity aspects of The Experience. Walk to the back of the space and you’ll be enraptured by the peace, calm, and beauty of the yoga studio. Shanti Gypsy Yoga is offered in the quiet, calm space. Certified instructors Regie Williams and Linda Crocker offer classes in stretch, chair and gentle yoga that benefit everyone, from the beginner to the more advanced. The first class is free, and subsequent classes are only $10 a session. They can be reached at (281)433-8573 or (903)513-3490 for more information about classes. There’s another great space at “The Experience” to explore. An outside relaxing side yard makes for a great spot for live music and is full of plants, bird feeders, a star-shaped fire pit, and seating galore. Kelli has ambitious plans to create an old-time ice cream parlor (the original parlor chairs are already in place), and The Experience will be home to all kinds of hands-on art classes and cooking events in the future. Kelli and Don’s philosophy is always centered around giving back to the community, so you will see a variety of featured local artisans and exhibits within “The Experience” setting. “We want The Experience to be a gathering spot for everyone,” said Kelli. Take a break, get out of the rush and visit “The Experience” in Edom, Texas. Take a look at upcoming calendar events on Facebook or call (817)721-7778. The Experience hours are Wednesday-Thursday 6am-2pm, Friday 6am-9pm, Saturday 6am-9pm, and Sunday 10am-5pm, with brunch served till 3pm. They are closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Inside the Artist’s Studio:

Ride the Lightning:

Caleb Bell By Derrick White

“I think we are fortunate here in Tyler. There are a lot of generous donors and supporters at various levels throughout the community. Since I moved to Tyler, there has been a noticeable increase in interest in the arts. The scene has definitely grown. Everything takes time; I feel like we are moving in the right direction,” states Tyler Museum of Art curator, Caleb Bell. Curators are those in charge of finding and selecting, classifying, handling and exhibiting artistic and cultural collections. Bell studied public relations & advertising and art history at the University of Texas at Tyler and graduated, magna cum laude, in 2011. He started as the public relations and marketing coordinator at the Tyler Museum of Art in early 2012. In 2014, Caleb began working on exhibitions and became curator in 2016. In addition to organizing exhibitions and programs over the last several years for the TMA, Bell has presented exhibitions at other institutions and given art talks at museums and galleries. Caleb served as a curatorial advisor for an exhibition at Women & Their Work in Austin, juried numerous competitions including this year’s CADD (Contemporary Art Dealers of Dallas) Fund, and worked on public art projects at Tyler Junior College and the University of Texas at Tyler. Most recently, he served as the juror for Craighead Green Gallery’s New Texas Talent XXVI exhibition in Dallas. This is an important exhibition and perhaps the last remaining noteworthy free juried show in the state, and a significant prospect for emerging Texas contemporary artists. It opens in August. It seems Caleb is all over the state promoting and bringing well[deserved attention to the arts of East Texas. Bell is riding the lightning of what is going in our regional community and he is a large part of what gives it legitimacy. He describes, “I think one of the most important things art brings to my life is community. First and foremost, the connections and friendships I’ve made within the Tyler community. I have been fortunate to meet a lot of wonderful people through the museum and will be forever grateful. Our donors and members are very supportive, and I couldn’t do any of this without them. I’ve also met a lot of great artists over the years. While I’ve only met some in passing, I’ve gotten to know many personally while working on exhibitions and other projects. Likewise, I have gotten to meet a lot of passionate collectors who have been generous with their resources. In my experience, the Texas art community is pretty well connected. I have gotten to know many museum professionals across the state and try to support them when possible. I have also had the pleasure to work with many gallerists throughout Texas. When visiting their spaces in Dallas, Houston, etc., it always feels good to be greeted when walking through the gallery door. And almost always I instantly hear, what’s new in Tyler?” Bell states, “I am very excited for the future of

Texas contemporary art. In addition to veteran artists still contributing important work, there are a lot of talented, emerging artists working throughout the state. The Texas art scene is becoming more connected which is definitely a plus. There seem to be more alternative and non-traditional spaces popping up. I think those kinds of spaces can offer a unique viewing opportunity and allow for more artistic flexibility. From my observations, there seems to be a renewed interest in performance art. I also see more artists creating installation-based work. It feels like there is a real focus on providing a unique experience for viewers.” When asked what inspired him to start curating exhibitions, Caleb Bell answers, “Edward Hopper once said, ‘If you could say it in words, there would be no reason to paint.’ I think about this quote often when looking at work. I understand the power of art and want to share it with others. When putting together an exhibition, I am providing the viewer with an experience. And whether it is just encountering something new or providing a completely different perspective, it is my hope each viewer walks away slightly changed after looking at an exhibition.” He adds, “In an increasingly ephemeral world, art is lasting. Even when performance works are over, they leave an impact. I think the tangible aspect of art is grounding and we need connection in our digital society. I also consider it an honor to get to work with artists to help realize their dreams. Artists create pieces to share and I get to help bring that work to the public’s attention. It is very rewarding.” Caleb explains, “When putting together an exhibition, I look at a lot of different things. Most importantly, I think about Tyler and the greater East Texas community. I think about how they will relate to and perceive it. I think about it in terms of the larger Texas art scene as well. Has the show already been done? What is the artistic importance of the exhibition? I also think about how we can program around it for the community. A couple of years ago, I presented Double Take: Works by Ed Blackburn which featured works inspired by various movies. I worked with Liberty Hall to put together a movie series tied in with the exhibition. It helped expand the conversation outside of the gallery.” He continues, “I am always most excited about what is up at the museum at the time. Right now, we have two great exhibitions for the summer, Texas Birds: Works by Frank X. Tolbert 2 (on view through August 4th) and Floating Life: Mississippi River Drawings by Liz Ward (on view through August 25th). I paired them together because they create an interesting conversation between one another. While Frank’s show is all birds, Liz incorporates birds in some of her pieces and focuses on the flora and fauna of the Mississippi River region. They each offer a regionalist take on their respective subject matter. The exhibitions are both primarily works on paper and offer complementary color palettes.” Caleb concludes, “I know I am biased, but I don’t understand why every person in Tyler doesn’t come to the museum. It is the community’s museum. From a well-rounded exhibition schedule to Family Days and other activities, there is literally something for everyone.” For more info go to tylermuseum.org.

There’s No Reason to Be Bored This Summer By Gini Rainey

“Four Three Two One” by Courtney Stevens Ms. Stevens has gone and done it again by creating a book that is difficult to put down. Although her writing is primarily geared for the YA reader audience, I must say her books carry messages that even adults can benefit from. With her masterful characterization skills, she has created another group of five intriguing kids who are trying their best to recover from a major catastrophe that seriously impacted the lives of four of them. Stevens’ storyline follows the five on their journey back to the scene of the bus explosion that changed their lives, and carries the underlying theme of learning to live with PTSD. “Four Three Two One” also focuses on the building of friendship, respect, and trust. Ms. Stevens’ books provide a look at some of the challenges facing our young people these days, and offer, if not a specific solution to any one problem, realistic ways for kids to find better ways to cope and work through the pitfalls of growing up. If you have a young person in your family and you’d like them to see them read something worthwhile this summer, I highly recommend “Four Three Two One” to be high on the list. Oh, and you might just enjoy reading it as much as I did, too! Rating: 5 of 5 – Copyright 2019, Harper Teen “The Hungry Ghost” by Dalena Storm This is one interesting, spell-binding, ghosttype book that will definitely hold your attention.

What happens when a ghost has been a ghost for a very long time and hasn’t had much to eat? Well, apparently it gets very hungry and being a ghost, it can’t eat food on its own. So according to Ms. Storm it does the next best thing. It finds a host body of someone on the way out and makes itself at home. This is what happened to poor Samantha who was in an unfortunate and tragic accident. Her unsuspecting family, her ex-husband, and her wantto-be new gay lover find out not too long after the invasion that Sam is no longer her old self when she comes out of her coma. Instead, she is now the new Sam with an insatiable hunger for food and other things. While I am not one to usually enjoy ghosty books, I definitely have to admit this was one really good read. In fact, I believe I read it in record time, thanks to the great character-building and intrigue Dalena has created in her recently released, allconsuming novel. This book will keep you on the edge of your chair up to the very interesting and surprising turn of events on the final pages. Rating: 5 of 5 – Copyright 2019, Black Spot Publishing
