By Barbara King The folks that brought you the popular Juls restaurant on Old Jacksonville, have new culinary treats in store for your palate.

Step inside Holy Guacamole, and you’ll be delighted with the colorful ambience, enticing smells, and friendly faces. It’s an established location with a new twist; the remodeled former Juls café is now serving Mexican specialties for the entire family.

The Schulz family has once again put together a unique dining experience; from the tongue-in-cheek “Holy Guacamole” piñatas that grace the dining room to the outside rustic eating area where you can relax and watch the kids play.

Open since the beginning of May, Holy Guacamole is the collaborative family vision of the Schulz family: Jay, wife Pam, and children Matt and Priscilla. “We came up with the entire look and feel of the new place,” Jay explained.

“Every decision, from the name to the logo design was a consensus, but not without a lot of discussion.”

Not a chain or franchise, the restaurant is the brainchild of the family, who stand behind their solid reputation in the Tyler community since 1985. All menu items are freshly made to order and can be modified to your taste.

Place your order at the front counter, then sit down and start with appetizers like nachos, the baddest Guacamole on earth, choriqueso (savory queso dip), or Mexican street corn bites topped with Cotija cheese, Elote seasoning with chipotle mayo, and chopped cilantro.

Appetizers run the gamut in price from $4.95-$7.95.

Freddy’s Famosas Fajitas are “hot, smokin’ sizzling to your table” and include your choice of beef, chicken, or shrimp, with all skillets served with rice or calabacitas and either borracho pork black bean or pinto refried.

Especialidades de la Casa include “Wild Thang Burrito,” “Mexican Hippie Skewers,” “Texas Sombreros” (sopes topped with refried beans and either beef taco meat or chicken guisada), “Diablo Tacos,” “El Grande Flaco Quesadilla,” “Jay’s Carne Asada,” Grilled Chicken Monterey, or for those not tempted by the Mexican flavors, the “Cheeseburger Classico.”

Those eating lighter can enjoy items from the Sopas and Salads part of the menu, including “Old Skool” Taco salad, Tijuana Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad, Grilled Chicken Tortilla Soup, or Boss Man Chili.

Think out of the box and build your own Mexican bowl with all kinds of options including Spanish rice, chopped romaine lettuce, beans (borracho, pork black beans, refried pinto, chorizo potato hash), and proteins (taco beef, chicken guisada, beef or chicken fajita, or shrimp).

Then add on items like roasted corn, spinach, all kinds of cheese, and pico de gallo to make it your own.

For the Schulz clan it’s all about family, and it’s reflected on the “Para Los Ninos” for the little ones in your life. They can choose from cheesy enchiladas, crunchy or soft tacos, or quesadillas, served with a side choice of celery sticks with peanut butter, apple slices with caramel sauce, refried beans and Spanish rice, or pineapple chunkies.

Future plans for the kiddos include a playground area with Astroturf and coined rides.

It’s more of a casual atmosphere than Juls next door, but along with your Mexican favorites, you can also enjoy Holy Margaritas, local craft beers, and wine by the glass or bottle. The outdoor enclosed eclectic-styled patio is the perfect place to socialize, relax, and watch the water with family and friends.

“We want to make it a place where people want to eat, visit, and stay for awhile,” said Schulz. “We have always taken pride in our service and being part of the community in everything we do.”

Finish off your delicious meal with a dessert; either crispy churro bites, tres leches vanilla cake, or cinnamon sugar chips. (On a side note: all meals come with chips and salsa, and there’s always free ice cream for the kids).

Holy Guacamole also caters for larger parties, minimum of 10, in the Tyler community.

The restaurant is open Monday-Wednesday, 11am-9pm and Friday and Saturdays, 11am-10pm.

Plus, there are more great things in store right next door. Step outside of Holy Guacamole and right up to the order window of CupPow for a specialty smoothie, juice, coffee, and more. They are open every weekday morning at 7:30am until closing at 5pm.

The espresso, juices, power bowls, and smoothies are made-to-order. Coffee drinks are specially made cappuccinos, French press, cortado, iced coffee, café au lait, espresso, or lattes; take your pick. Fresh juices might be more up your alley, including California Soul (pineapple, spinach, celery), Kale Storm (apple, kale, lemon), Diplomat (carrot, apple, ginger,

spinach, parsley, kale), Farmacy (carrot, orange, garlic beet, parsley, lime), or Vitamin Seed (orange, beet, pineapple).

Power bowls are yours for just $5.75 with a base like acai, coconut milk, avocado, spinach, banana, and agave with toppings like blueberries, granola, blackberries, or sliced almonds.

Cup-Pow also serves up excellent smoothies, 16 oz. or 24 oz., like Greenleaf, V-18, Field Day, Strawburst, or Chunky Monkey. You can go natural with fresh fruit choices like blueberry, banana, strawberry, mango, peach, or orange.

Advanced Eventbrite tickets are capped and only available until 12 midnight the day prior to the event. “At-the-door-tickets” are always available on the day of the event at the checkin/registration table for $15. What About Kabob and His Gyros, but locals called it “What About Kabobs” or just “Kabobs” for short has closed. It was wellknown for gyros and other fast and unique Greek specialties. It was a favorite among high school and college students, especially, but also among those of all ages who craved something besides a burger for lunch. The business originally opened in 2011. Kabobs was located on the south southwest Loop 323 in Tyler. Many East Texans will be sad to see that this one-ofa-kind eatery has closed its doors.

Roost Chicken Salad & Deli has opened in the old Smashburger location on Troup Hwy. at 3314 Troup Hwy. It doesn’t take much to conclude from a name like that, that they’ll be serving up chicken salad sandwiches and offering other deli style sandwiches.

Honeybunz Cafe is going into the Smashburger on S. Broadway. It is serving breakfast and lunch and will be coming soon. It is located at next to TCBY. They will be serving honey buns along with other sweet treats.

Weinerland Returns! Last year following the deaths of the owners of the iconic Tyler hot dog restaurant Weinerland closed after being opened for over 45 years. It has now reopened with new owners and a new menu but they still have some of everyone’s favorites. Lindsey and Michael Harrison have teamed up with friends, Ashely and John Feldman, and are bringing the dogs back with the family recipes you know and love. Lindsey Harrison said, “What I really remember is the chili cheese dogs,” she said. “And we have the original chili recipe! We’ll be bringing back the old favorites, and adding some new things as well. We’ll be bringing in new varieties.” Welcome back Weinerland!

Coffee Outside Tyler: Brewing Community, One Cup At A Time

The beautiful bean juice. College students and professionals alike consume copious amounts of it. Since its origins around Sufi campfires in Yemen during the 15th century, it has been consumed by royalty and commoners alike.

It has been at the center of countless numbers of meetings, treaties, business deals, Saturday morning breakfasts, Sunday brunches, and early morning meditations. Renowned martial artist and actor, Jackie Chan, once aptly said, “Coffee is a language in itself.”

One local Tyler resident, Carlos Barron, has recently decided to take that language and use it to build bridges around the city by getting people to sit down together and enjoy a free cup of coffee and all the conversation you can stand as they get to know their neighbors at local events called Coffee Outside Tyler (COT).

Carlos Barron’s story begins like thousands of others here in East Texas. Born in Tyler in 1984, Carlos attended school locally, eventually graduating from Robert E. Lee and like so many before, started his college career at Tyler Junior College. After a couple of years there, Barron decided to finish his degree at the University of Texas, San Antonio and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2009.

After a couple of moves between Tyler and San Antonio, during which he developed a love for cycling, Carlos settled in Austin around 2012 where he worked in a local cycling shop with the goal of becoming a certified cycling mechanic. During his time in Austin, life happens as it often does, and after marriage and the birth of their first child, the Barron family decided to move back to Tyler in 2015 to be closer to their respective families and begin the whole parenting thing with a support system in place. During this transition time back to Tyler, Carlos supported himself by helping out at a ranch owned by family friends as well as working part time at Elite Cycles and Natural Grocers.

At this point in Carlos’ story, a vision started to form of combining his love of cycling with getting the community of cyclers together for coffee in order to hang out and get to know each other better. The initial Coffee Outside started as an event held in Bergfeld Park, about 15 months ago, for people to pack some camp stoves and coffee on their bikes, ride to the park, brew coffee, and just hang out.

“I really didn’t have this big plan at that time,” Barron remembers about that first event.

“It really was a mess. My logistics were off, and it was just us hanging out at the park with our bikes and our coffee. It was drizzling, cold, and soggy, but at some point I stepped back and saw that as people were sharing their coffee with each other, trying new brands, new brew techniques, and having fun, something was happening beyond what my expectations were.”

What was happening at that first event was, unexpectedly, the beginnings of what would come to be known as Coffee Outside Tyler.

Barron recalls, “I had this realization that we weren’t just brewing community, we were making connections; we were making friendships;

we were just having a great time, and that’s where the meaning of COT came from.”

From that first humble beginning, Carlos had this crazy idea that if you give people a venue, a reason, and an opportunity to “engage with others through communications and actions,” then good things are going to happen. Building on a relationship started from his time at Natural Grocers, Carlos tapped Porch Culture Coffee to supply coffee for these events and the idea grew to include not just the bike community, but the entire Tyler community.

According to Carlos, “John and Shelly over at Porch Culture are really great people and we use their coffee exclusively out of a desire to promote local connections and networks.”

Also from that time period, Barron met Claudia Carmago and Gaby Kingry who have been instrumental in helping with social media as well as photography. Carlos states, “They have been instrumental in capturing and helping share COT’s message. I am not a photographer so having them being part of the team has been a blessing.”

Carlos will typically pair with a local business about once a month to host a COT event, and it typically coincides with an event or promotion the local venue is sponsoring. Barron will bring COT to the venue, set up his coffee, and then watch as connections happen right before his eyes.

“Each local business has their own community, their own followers, and regular people they serve. Every local business gives something to that community whether we realize it or not,” Carlos muses. “If I’m lucky, I can bring enough of my regular attendees to interact with each individual venue’s community and special things can happen. Even if it is just one new person I meet and connect with, then the day has been a success.”

Although COT events are hosted at local businesses, Barron doesn’t rely on those businesses to offset the cost of the logistics for Coffee Outside. Carlos sees this not as a way to make a quick buck, but rather a marathon of building experiences for people by providing an intrinsic value that will make them want to come back. Part of the focus for COT is to bring people’s attention back to what’s happening in the community here in Tyler, and Barron’s hope is that by helping to highlight these local businesses and their communities, locals will start to become more engaged in what’s happening around them.

“Boy’s and Girl’s clubs, homeless shelters, and other local charities need people who are willing to engage with their community,” says Barron. “More so than just giving money to make yourself feel better, giving of your time allows that connection to be personal and in doing so, you give the people you are helping value that goes beyond just a dollar amount.”

While Carlos hopes that in the future he can combine the Coffee Outside concept with his original love of cycling into a bike shop/coffee shop experience, for now he’s just focusing on continuing to brew his community, one cup at a time.

The next scheduled event will be on June 10th at Moss Flower Shop, 2210 Three Lakes Pkwy., Ste. 160 in Tyler, off Old Jacksonville Hwy. near FRESH by Brookshire’s, 9-11am.

There will be music provided by Ian Powers, a photobooth provided by Inkredible Sounds, fresh Porch Culture coffee and, as always, the chance to step outside your own box and brew your own community.

33rd Annual Tomato Fest:

June 10th, Jacksonville is Getting Juicy Welcome to Jacksonville, where the World’s Largest Bowl of Salsa was made, all 2,672 lbs. in one day by the best tasting fruit: tomatoes!

Local farmers are busy getting ready by planting acres of the best tasting tomatoes for the upcoming 33rd Annual Tomato Fest in Jacksonville, Texas. Join the celebration in Downtown Jacksonville on Saturday, June 10th as that’s when the BIG day of activities are happening all day long.

More than 200 vendors will be there as well as all kinds of festival food including the famous fried green tomatoes, Farmers Market, $500 Got Talent Contest, $1,000 photo contest, car show, motorcycle show, tennis tournament, art, exhibit, entertainment, Kidz Zone, and so much more will cover five blocks Downtown.

Tomato events include a Salsa Contest, Tomato Eating and Peeling Contest, Tomato Archery, Tomato Shoot, Best Home-Grown Tomato Contest, and Tomato Packing Contest along with a tour of the Tomato Shed.

Saturday evening Chili’s Street Dance will take place and will feature Brian Chance Band and Lady Chazz and the Tramps.

There will be many different demonstrations for the whole family to enjoy including yoga, belly dancing, and martial arts. There will also be many activities offered such as bounce houses, obstacle courses, a scavenger hunt, and a petting zoo.

“Participating in conjunction with Hit the Bricks for Downtown Tyler every second Saturday of the month, we want to continue to provide more opportunities for families to get outside and enjoy all that Tyler has to offer,” Mary Foster, museum curator, said.

This event is open to the public and general admission is free, however some activities do have a cost to participate.

By Holli Fourniquet On the second Saturday of every month, people from all over will converge in Downtown Tyler for a new event called Hit the Bricks. Downtown Tyler will be bursting with family fun, entertainment, music, food, history tours, art, and, of course, the chance to check out a great, locally-owned restaurant, bar, or retail establishment.

With its ongoing revitalization, Downtown Tyler has become a happening place to be. So far, it’s still one of Tyler’s best kept secrets, but the secret is out!

Visit Tyler, the City of Tyler, and Downtown businesses, organizations, and enthusiasts are all coming together to organize activities for the entire family the second Saturday of every month throughout Downtown Tyler.

Hit the Bricks will offer a chance for the community to come together in the heart of the city.

The next Hit the Bricks will be happening all day June 10th.

Special activities on June 10th include: • Black Music Month Festival on the Square, 10am-5pm. This free event will be fun for the whole family! Enjoy music, food from Brown Suga Catering, vendors, and more.

• Edwin Holt & Red Clay Roadhouse will be live in concert at Liberty Hall at 8pm. Tickets are $20-$50.

• ETX Brewing Co. will offer brewery tours at 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm. Also, enjoy beer brats, street tacos, and more, as well as live music and fun.

• Gallery Main Street will be featuring its annual 6x6 exhibit. View and purchase hundreds of art pieces on display created by participants from all over.

Downtown Tyler Wine Swirl is a special event that draws visitors to the Downtown area. More than 500 people will come Downtown to enjoy wine and food samples, music, art, and more.

Locally owned restaurants and area vineyards will offer food and wine samples in Downtown buildings around the square.

Tickets for the event are $50 per person, and only 500 tickets are sold. This event usually sells out quickly.

A ticket entitles a guest to visit each of the wine and restaurant sites to enjoy a sample of wine and/or food. Wineries will offer guests a sample of wine. Guests may just have the sample (one per guest) or may purchase wine by the glass or by the bottle. Guests will also be entitled to a sample from each participating restaurant.

Art and music are also part of the event. Host businesses are encouraged to promote themselves with special sales, bounce-back coupon sheets, flyers, and more.

This event serves as a fundraiser for the City of Tyler Main Street Program, which must fundraise a large portion of its annual budget. Among the department’s Downtown revitalization programs, the Main Street office manages Gallery Main Street and all of its programming, assists business and property owners, and produces a range of special events. Security will be provided by off– and on-duty police officers.

Crafting Dreams In Downtown Tyler

By Johnny Griffith East Texas has always been home to a strong community of artisans and crafters who take their creativity and pour it into a creation of some sort or another. Typically the only outlets for these “makers” has been festivals, Canton Trades Days, or online. Starting this year, however, a new store in Downtown Tyler opened, and the makers as well as buyers of artisan made merchandise couldn’t be more excited.

903 Handmade is a local brick and mortar storefront catering to merchandise, as the name might suggest, handmade by small batch artisans as opposed to large scale production.

The brainchild of Kristy and Nate Norman, 903 Handmade is an extension of their inner creativity and a collaboration with artists from the East Texas area as well as all over the country. Both transplants to the area, Kristy and Nate have embraced the area as their own, and it’s truly a family endeavor as they rotate between working the store and shuttling kids to competitive sports or activities as they integrate family and work.

We caught them in between activities recently and managed to get a moment to talk about what 903 means to them and what’s going on Downtown: Johnny: So let’s start with a bit of background for you guys. Who are you, and what brought you to the area?

903: Kristy grew up in Texas, in the Mesquite area, and moved to East Texas (Lindale) when she was a senior in High school. Nate grew up in Michigan and moved here about seven years ago with Target. Kristy went to college at Stephen F. Austin State University and got her degree in Fashion Merchandising and Art. Nate went to college at Central Michigan and got a degree in Business and Marketing. We met about a year and a half after Nate moved to Texas through mutual friends. We’ve both always had a drive to do something on our own and saw this as a perfect way to do so.

We have three kids: Sophie (15), Camden (13), and Levi (14 months). We want the store to be part of our kids lives and want to help teach them what it’s like to work for something and give them the skills they need to go out and work in the community.

Johnny: Why the name 903 Handmade?

What’s the significance to you?

903: Once we knew we wanted to open the store, we had all kinds of different names and variations. We wanted something that helped say who we are in the name. Both of us came up with this same name, and when we talked, we both brought it up. 903 being the area code and pairing that up with “handmade” fit.

Johnny: When did you first get the craft bug?

903 Kristy: I’ve has always had the “craft bug;” when I was growing up, my mom always made things, so it’s always been a part of what I do. In 2010, I started making jewelry as Lou Cs Designs. Making hand formed and hand stamped charms, bracelets, and necklaces. I’m excited to have an outlet and to see people enjoy my work!

Grandfather. My grandma and grandpa would make wooden crafts and travel around to shows. When I would stay with them, I always loved the fact that I would get to work with my grandfather in his shop.

In fact, we have not been able to park a car in our garage for several years now because the shop has taken over most of the area.

Johnny: At what point did you start to get the idea that this could be more than a hobby?

903 Nate: It’s been a dream of both of ours for several years. We’ve talked about it for a long time, but never took a leap. Kristy was doing a show in Tyler with Lou Cs Designs and ended up being next to Aristeo with El Guapo Records. She started talking with him during the downtime and shared her dream of having a store with her jewelry and also other makers. He was about to open his store and told us we had to come check out the spot next to him. Shortly after that I went and looked at the location and thought it was great. One Sunday I told Kristy to get our son, and we were going for a ride. I took everyone to the store. After about two weeks of thinking and going back and forth on it, we called the property manager. We spent several hours in the store and finally made the decision to go for it.

The rest fell into place.

Johnny: What was your family’s reaction when you decided to open a brick and mortar?

903 Nate: Our family has been very supportive. Kristy’s mom is one of our makers as well as her sister-in-law. Not only that but they help us a lot with the store and our kids.

Johnny: When did you officially open?

903 Kristy: Our first day open was February 10th. We spent almost a month getting displays, building a pallet wall, and meeting with makers for inventory. At the beginning of February, I told Nate that we were going to open on the 10th. It was a lot of very long days working to get everything set up to make it happen. Since we’ve opened, we’ve continued to add on new makers and items.

Johnny: How was the response been so far?

903: The response so far has been awesome!

We get new people into the store almost daily, and they all have great things to say. We’ve both heard several people say they are happy to see something like this, and they are excited to see what is happening Downtown.

Johnny: Do you just showcase your own creations or you collaborate with other local artisans?

903: Both of us have items in the store, but we also have items and collections from makers local to Tyler/East Texas, makers from around Texas, and from around the country. Our goal is to find quality makers both locally and around the country. A little over half of our makers are from East Texas and the Dallas area.

Johnny: What type of things can be found at

903 Handmade?

903: We carry quality handmade items from baby clothes made from vintage t-shirts and sweatshirts, burp cloths, teethers to leather and canvas handbags/purses. We even carry a maker from Dallas that uses nothing but recycled materials to make bottle openers and glasses. We have a little something for everyone.

Johnny: What has been your proudest moment so far with 903 Handmade?

903: There have been a few. First is being able to work with some awesome businesses in the Downtown area. Everyone has a vision of what we all know it can be. Seeing things like the Off the Square Block Party come together and being able to team up with other small businesses has been awesome. Secondly, we want to support the community that has been supporting us. We just did our first event teaming up with Royal Family Kids and Teen Reach Adventure Camps to help raise money for them. We had a whole day where a portion of sales went to their ministry. Lastly, was a couple of weeks ago when we were at a makers fair in Dallas. We were talking to some makers and telling them who we were, and several of them already knew us. Neither of us really thought anyone outside of Tyler knew anything about us. It was both humbling and very rewarding.

Johnny: What’s on the horizon for you and the store?

903: We’re working on getting a website where we can sell online as well as in the store.

Right now we just have a small store on our Facebook page but would love to expand this.

Johnny: When a new customer walks through the door, what’s the most common reaction?

903: We hear a lot of how they love seeing a store like this with handmade items. They’re happy that we did this, and they can help support makers and also local makers.

Music Lee Mathis and The Brutally Handsome:

Spreading the Gospel of Good Music

By Johnny Griffith There’s a new, old sound being heard across venues in East Texas the past couple of years that is part push-back from mindless “Bro-Country,” part ghosts of troubadours past, and part simple expression of the roots of East Texas. Call it Outlaw Country, Train Music, Old-School Country, or HonkyTonk music, the music brings back shades of old Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Merle, and others when country music was more like a sit-down with an old friend over a beer, as opposed to a night at the club drinking cosmopolitans.

One of these new troubadours is Lee Mathis and his band The Brutally Handsome. Longtime friends, Lee Mathis and Philip Griffith have been showing up at local venues spreading the gospel of good music across the barrooms, taprooms, and pretty much anywhere with enough room for a few guitars and people willing to listen. We tracked down the duo recently to get some background on what this new revival is all about.

Johnny: I’ve got to ask this first: Lee Mathis and the Brutally Handsome, I’m assuming that’s a reference to “Life In The Fast Lane” by The Eagles. How did you guys come up with that name?

Lee: I’ve been an Eagles fan for years and years, and we wanted a band name that was tongue in cheek, but gave reference to some of our influences. It was either that or Lee Mathis and the Knights in Satan’s Service, which now that I think about it...

Philip: Yep, “Life In The Fast Lane” was the inspiration for that. I always thought that was a cool line: “...he was brutally handsome, she was terminally pretty,” so when we were kicking around ideas for a band name, I just threw that one out and it stuck. We all love the Eagles, so it seemed fitting. Also, we’ve got some pretty solid self-esteem going on.

Johnny: Speaking of the Band, besides you guys, who rounds out the rest of the full band, and how did you all meet?

Lee: Phil Howard is our other guitarist, and we’ve known each other since high school.

Jon Morrow is our bass player, and I met him through a mutual friend. I didn’t realize at the time, but I grew up with his little brother.

Marcus Jones, our drummer, came along, and added some instant chemistry and light-heartedness to the band.

Johnny: When did you two first get into music, and who were some of your early influences?

Lee: I got my first guitar Christmas of 1993, and I actually still have it. It’s an old Sears acoustic that still keeps perfect tune. I honestly didn’t grow up listening to a lot of music. I was kind of sheltered in that regard.

When I did start listening, I remember my first two biggest influences were Hank Williams Jr. and Travis Tritt. I kind of fell into that 90’s country stuff that I’m glad I fell out of later on.

I had some friends that introduced me to the Eagles, Tom Petty, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Wow, I was a sponge after that.

Philip: I’ve always been into music in one way or another, even before learning to play.

Phil Howard and I shared a love for the Beatles and Guns n’ Roses, and in 9th grade science class he declared that he would teach me to play guitar, and we were starting a band.

My earliest musical influences were probably the Statler Brothers, the Oak Ridge Boys, the Beatles, James Taylor, and others. Not long after picking up the guitar, my brother in law turned me on to Steve Vai and Joe Satriani.

Next came a lot of progressive rock, metal, grunge, and rap. Def Leppard is hands down my favorite band. I just love those guys.

Johnny: What were some of the things you guys were doing musically before the current collaboration?

Lee: I was lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist in a band that just didn’t make it. After that, I reached out to Philip, and he and I did some acoustic stuff for quite some time. In fact, our acoustic shows are still some of the most fun things we do. You never know what we may play.

Philip: Just before we decided to put a full band lineup behind Lee, Phil Howard and I were playing in the Gene Evans Band. Lee had been with Blind Mojo. Blind Mojo was ending, so Lee and I were playing a lot of acoustic dates. Gene decided to wrap up GEB to focus on his business, so the time seemed right to throw the band behind Lee. Johnny: Lee, your sound is very much a homage to a style of country that seems to be enjoying a revival these days. When did you decide to be a “honky-tonk country singer,” and do you feel it was an extension of who you always were musically, more of a rebellion against the manufactured “bro-country,” or a bit of both?

Lee: It seems like I’ve been a Waylon, Willie, and Merle fan for as long as I can remember, and that’s just home base to me. I remember distinctly going to see a Hank Williams Jr. concert a few years ago in Bossier City, and he had two openers, Eric Church and Jamey Johnson. When Jamey took the stage, I was amazed by his voice and his stripped down but polished sound. It wasn’t long after “In Color” had come out, and it amazed me how well written his songs were and his delivery.

He probably said two words to the crowd during his hour long set that night, and he even did quite a few covers of people he loved.

What do you know, we ended up having a lot of the same of what Jamey called “Honkytonk Heroes.” I started picking up guys like Cody Jinks, Whitey Morgan, Chris Stapleton, and Sturgill Simpson. I’ve never been a fan of the “bro-country” stuff, and all these guys have the voices to go along with that “three chords and the truth” style that I can relate to.

Johnny: About how many shows a month are you guys currently pulling right now?

Lee: My best guess is around 12-18 gigs a month. We’ve pulled two a day several times, but I love it. I want to be that band that’s known as a hard working band. There’s a lot of bands that I know of, mostly on a national level, that you just hardly ever hear from.

They’ll take a two-year hiatus or more, but I can’t see us doing something like that, even if I just have to grab my guitar and go play with some buddies or do a song swap, that’s what it’s all about to me.

Johnny: How much of your set is original stuff as opposed to covers?

Lee: Right now, we’ve got four originals in the set. I’ve got a binder full of lyrics that are looking for melodies. It’s fun to me when we take an old song that I wrote in 2002 and put music to it. We’re going to eventually get more and more originals in the set, but I still want to pay homage to Merle, Waylon, and the guys that paved the way.

Philip: Currently, we’re playing about four hours worth of material, and we’ve only had time to work up four of the originals with the band. That will change very soon, but rehearsal time is critical, and we’re always looking for ways to change the set in response to the audience. The other originals that we want to add to the set will take higher priority over the next few weeks as time permits.

Johnny: Where do you pull inspiration from for your originals?

Lee: Well, life is where you get the best stuff. However, I’ve written some that were too autobiographical at different points in my life.

I’ve written a couple where it’s about situations friends have gotten into. I’ve written some where it’s stuff I’ve gotten into. There’s love songs. There’s blues songs. There’s country heartache songs. I’ve never run short on ideas.

Philip: When writing together, Lee usually comes in with most of the lyrics sketched out really well, so my role is generally to form a musical framework with just the right arrangements. Then, we beat our heads against the wall refining the lyrics to best convey the ideas while still fitting with meter, inflection, and so on. It’s a process.

Johnny: What’s been your best on-stage memory, so far, with this project?

Lee: I used to sit around just wondering why gigs were hard to book. They still are at times, but not as much anymore. But when it was hardest, and I was having a hard time playing anywhere, out of the blue, a musician from Longview named Allen Wayne Nichols, messaged me and asked if I’d be willing to play a show at Memphis Bar in Longview opening for his band, Outbound Train, who was opening for a reunion show of Flyin’ Kornbread. I gladly accepted. I had no idea what to expect. I had never met Allen Wayne, much less any of the people that would be there that night.

Philip played that night with me, duo acoustic. We got there; Al was so nice, like we’d known each other for a while. He introduced me to some guys that I literally call some of my best friends now. I met his band, the infamous Doghouse Dave Stopani and Kevin Blalock, as well as other musicians there that night, like David Baxter who was the lead singer of Flyin’ Kornbread as well as David Smith, lead singer of Double Nickel Band. All those guys are just aces in my book. Another thing that made that evening so great for me was getting up on stage and not knowing what to expect. We had a great show, and after every song, people were hooting and hollering and loving it. All of the musicians were really supportive as well, and to this day, we all support each other and try to lift each other up.

Philip: I think our first show at a place called Pinky’s really stands out in my mind, because it showed us that if we keep working at it, this band can be something good.

Johnny: What’s been your best off-stage memory?

Lee: In August of 2016, my wife and I met Hank Williams Jr. before a show in Houston. I didn’t actually get a whole lot of time to talk to him, but I said, “Man, I have been waiting for this moment to meet you for 30 years!” He has this charisma about him that’s larger than life on stage, but he’s very personable. We shook hands, and I have a great photo and memory of that meeting.

Philip: Lee and I went to the Generation Axe tour and did the meet and greet with Zack Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt, Tosin Abasi, and (my hero) Steve Vai. Lee offered his condolences to Steve for losing the guitar battle to the Karate Kid. It was great!

Johnny: Who in music gets you excited when you listen to them right now?

Lee: Musically, I’m all over the place. Just today I listened to an old Merle Haggard album that just struck a nerve and made me say, “Damn, Merle!” I really get excited when I hear guys like Blackberry Smoke, and I still love guys like KISS. I dig a lot of the local guys too such as Outbound Train, Double Nickel Band, Nick Brumley, and the Mansion Family.

Philip: Ian Moore, Devin Townsend, Biffy Clyro, Celldweller (Klayton/Circle of Dust), Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, Anneke Van Giersbergen, Dream Theater, and tons more.

Johnny: What’s on the horizon for Lee Mathis and the Brutally Handsome for the rest of 2017 and beyond?

Lee: We’ve got our first album coming out at the end of July that we’re excited about.

It may very easily replace Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and the Eagles “Greatest Hits 19711975” as the best selling album of all time that is if I can afford to buy that many. We’re going to keep playing as often as we can, broadening our radius of how far we play. In November, we’re opening for Jason Boland & the Stragglers at Love & War in Lindale; we’re psyched about that one! We’re so proud of the

name we’re building and the places that we’ve played that has embraced our music and what we do.

Philip: We’ve got an album coming out July 29th, and we’ve got Phil Howard moving to second electric guitar. Phil adds tons more energy to the show as a guitarist. He and I have always worked well together as a guitar team. He had been playing keys with us, but we felt that asking him to move to guitar would be a good kick in the seat of the pants for all of us.

Johnny: What would you tell a first time fan to expect at your show?

Lee: It’s not a straight up country show.

There’s a lot of southern rock as well as blues in our show. Just when you think we’re fixing to take you to George Jones town, we’ll play “The Thrill Is Gone” by B.B. King.

It’s a high energy show, and I’m so fortunate to have two amazing guitarists, a rock steady melodic bass player, as well as a great drummer, and I play guitar too.

It’s real Americana music but there’s no categories that we stick to. You’ll hear Waylon, Blackberry Smoke, Led Zeppelin, and there’s some of the newer country guys that you’ll hear too, but they all sing country the way country used to be played and is finally being played again. I’m also really proud of our originals, and each show, I see people singing along to songs I’ve written. That’s one of the greatest feelings in the world for a musician.

Philip: Expect to hear some of the great country classics mixed with newer country artists that are keeping “real country” alive. Of course, the Brutally Handsome is a rock and roll band at heart, so expect some good ol’ southern rock and a bit of blues.

Our goal is to keep upping the ante with our onstage energy.

Radney Foster Announces Texas Tour Dates Radney Foster is

coming to Lindale to Love & War in Texas on June 2nd!

Considered an elder statesman of Texas singer-songwriters, Radney Foster has been a friend and mentor to many younger artists on the Texas scene.

He’s written and produced songs for Randy Rogers, Jack Ingram, Kacey Musgraves, Wade Bowen, Josh Abbott, Pat Green, Cory Morrow, and many others. His songs are regularly mined by superstar acts like Keith Urban, Sara Evans, and the Dixie Chicks.

Radney Foster will be playing 12 shows throughout Texas in June, with full dates listed below.

More about Radney Foster Though Radney has been telling stories in song for more than three decades, his latest endeavor digs a bit deeper. The Sycamore Creek project includes a CD as well as a book of short fiction. While they stand alone, the

full story is told through both the book and album.

Radney has also recently released “The Foster” EP with singer-songwriter Kyle Hutton, which benefits foster care aid and awareness in Texas. The two teamed up for the fivesong project, which came out March 31st, to bring awareness to the lack of available, safe homes and many children in need throughout the state. All proceeds from the EP go back to foster care awareness and aid in Texas.

This is a benefit to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. In addition to fundraising for local services, the event helps increase education and awareness to make people understand that there are services available for them whenever they are diagnosed with a cancer.

Danny Guire: Physical Graffiti

By Derrick White I enjoy the physical look of graffiti art and the buildup of composite layers.

From abandoned buildings to railroad cars, the graffiti style is visually interesting and captivating in its energy, boldness, and complexity. Keep in mind graffiti style artwork is different than plain and criminal vandalism. Graffiti suggests a powerful artistic style and a statement, often from those in our society who are disenfranchised and marginalized. It is layered and multifaceted street art expressing powerful messages to the general public, and it is different from scrawling a crude genital drawing or an offensive word in the destruction of someone else’s property.

It is more artistic than what you find in a bathroom stall. Wikipedia describes graffiti as art “containing writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or painted (sometimes illicitly) on walls or other surfaces, often within public view. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and they have existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

Now, paint, particularly spray paint, and marker pens are the most commonly used materials. In most countries, marking or painting property without the property owner’s permission is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime.

Graffiti may also express underlying social and political messages, and a whole genre of artistic expression is based upon spray paint graffiti styles. Controversies surrounding graffiti continue to create disagreements among city officials, law enforcement, and artists (or taggers/writers) wishing to display and seek appreciation for their work in public locations.

There are many different types and styles of graffiti. It is a rapidly developing art form in which the value is highly contested and reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction. Good graffiti can become a cultural landmark of a city.

provoking images painted or stenciled around the streets of London. Banksy has also recently taken on the political tensions of the Palestinian territories, where he has created images on Israel’s highly contentious West Bank wall.

“A lot of people never use their initiative because no-one told them to,” Banksy said.

Danny Guire is an East Texas artist from Longview working as a painter, sculptor, and muralist. Danny’s style is graffiti-esque in its spontaneity, flowing organic forms, and intrepid, vivid, colorful palettes.

“I have been drawing since I was little,” Danny said. “I would go to church, and the sermon was in Spanish, so to keep me occupied I was given pencil and paper. I would doodle and draw robots.”

Danny is from Arizona, and he and his family lived in Florida before settling in Longview in 1994. He recalls the colors and culture of Florida as being alive and vibrant and unlike anything he had seen before. While there, he kept to himself and looked for ways to stay busy. He would draw constantly and he also started drawing and copying Disney cartoon characters.

Danny recollects, “When I first moved to Longview at the age of 12, I was the new guy once again. I started drawing graffiti imagery and break dancing. I was active in visual art through middle school and junior high. My father was a commercial painter, and I would help him paint apartments and houses solid colors. I got accustomed to painting on walls, and it has helped me with the confidence to tackle larger canvases.”

“My cousin was a big inspiration,” Danny adds. “He made drawings while he was in the penitentiary. Some of his art made it into “Lowrider Arte” magazine. He would draw comic book characters as well as realistic portraits of celebrities. I love the creative mind. My

grandfather could play many musical instruments, my uncles were teaching me things from the break dancing era of the 1980’s, and I was learning to play the guitar with my family.

I grew up with a lot of flavor and creativity surrounding me.”

After graduating high school in 2000, Danny served in the U.S. Navy. He has explored the rave music scene (a large dance party featuring performances by DJs, selecting and mixing a seamless flow of loud electronic dance music).

“My artistic expression has taken many forms from drawing to dancing to playing music to painting,” states the artist. Danny enjoys painting with acrylics and was recently reintroduced to oil painting. He is excited about exploring this medium with the pleasure and satisfaction he derives out of the process.

Danny finds inspiration in many sources from Disney and other cartoons, like Voltron and “ThunderCats” (American animated television series) as well as Akira (a Japanese, science fiction, anime film), and a slew of other Anime.

He is also inspired by music, breakdancing, and talented family members. “It has taught me patience and helped me to calm my mind, and in a sense, meditate as I work. Stress is the enemy,” says Danny.

Regarding artistic challenges Danny mentions, “Selling art is difficult. The internet has helped, but it’s still the most difficult thing to deal with currently.”

Longview arts advocate and art gallery owner Paula Davis has recently reopened P’s Gallery in Longview after a brief hiatus in 2012. Her gallery represents East Texas contemporary artists working in a variety of different media and styles, including the work of Danny Guire, whose work is on view all of June.

She asked Danny to join her stable of artists in the TMA’s history. The exhibition continues through January 7th, 2018.

This Month at Gallery Main Street

Summer Reading Filled With Inspiration

What I find incredible about Sharon Thayer is her life’s journey from a dyslexic child to an inspirational author. A former teacher and owner of a nature-based childcare center, Thayer recognizes that those who need this message most are not in a place where
