To Do
Come Downtown and “Hit the Bricks” Saturday, April 14th Downtown businesses and attractions (around the square and
Rose City Farmers Market Grows Into Downtown
off the square) will be bursting with things to do Saturday, April 14th, the second Saturday of every month, for “Hit the Bricks.” Downtown Tyler businesses have something for the whole family! PARKING IS FREE in the parking garage and on the square. Also, there will be a FREE hop on/hop off shuttle sponsored by Tyler Innovation Pipeline that will take you around Downtown. Plan your day to attend one or all of these special activities:
By Barbara Greenbauer Everything is blooming, growing, and flourishing in East Texas and it’s time to head back to
the market! Your Saturday mornings can be stupendous with by stopping downtown at the new Rose City Farmers Market location. Opening April 7th and running through the first weekend in November, the market is a neat, unique experience for the whole family. Located just a block from the Square - in the Unclaimed Furniture parking lot in Tyler (236 S. Broadway), the market is the place to be bright and early Saturday mornings from 8am-12 noon. Your senses will go wild with the atmosphere of the Rose City Farmers Market. As part of the Food and Farm Coalition, their goal is to work toward a sustainable food system that meets the needs of both producers and consumers. The market brings all that’s fresh straight to you: fruits, vegetables, and herbs all grown within 75 miles of Tyler. That includes pasture-raised beef, lamb, pork, chicken, and turkey, free-range/non GMO eggs, and goat cheeses. Jessica Bullock, Director of the Farmers Market, says “We are excited about the opportunity to connect people with locally grown food in a great community gathering place Downtown.” The move to downtown makes the market “easily accessible to everyone, which is extremely important to our mission,” explained Jessica. All items sold at market are 100% produced or grown by the vendors. “Everything you’ll see at the market has been grown, baked, or made by the vendors themselves, which may be a surprise to some,” said Jessica. Eating seasonally is what the market is all about, and when you eat food grown locally, it’s is always harvested at the peak of its season. Local food is also not stored in shipping containers, so it doesn’t spoil or lose health benefits on its way. Buying food at its peak season also benefits our local farmers because it costs less for producers to harvest and transport and those savings get passed down to you…it’s a huge win/win for everybody! With the Market opening in April 7th and running through November 17th, every week will be a brand new adventure as the seasons change and different produce are featured. In April, a trip to the market will fill your senses with treasures from East Texas fields like arugula, carrots, kohlrabi, radishes, beets, turnips, strawberries, new potatoes, mustard greens, kale, lettuce, cilantro, onions, swiss chard and parsley. The market is all about community, so you’ll find something for everyone from fresh bread to flowers, coffee, jams and jellies, and baked goods. Vendors also showcase Texas olive oil, handcrafted art, and Texas fruit wines. And that’s not all you’ll get to see at the Market. Local musicians

will be showcased every Saturday, plus a new exciting addition of rotating food trucks. “We are proud to serve as a venue to some of Tyler’s most talented musicians,” said Jessica. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the perfect blend of food and music and great weather. Vendors or members must meet certain goals including being located within 75 miles of the market, providing safe and fair working conditions for all farm workers, organic or natural methods, humanely raised animal products, beef and other grasseating animals are grass fed, and dairy is rGHB-free. Find out more about becoming a member/vendor at foodcoalition.org. The market depends on volunteers to set up and break down, help with displays, banners, and lots of behind the scenes work. What a great way to give back to the community! People interested in helping can contact rosecityfarmersmarket@gmail.com. “We are thrilled to be part of the Downtown scene and to be able to partner with the great small businesses that are part of this growing culture,” said Jessica. “The new location is a perfect fit for the Market and the thriving downtown community.” “We would like to thank Bill & Cecilia Bush of Unclaimed Furniture for the space and the support.” Bring the family and spend Saturday mornings at the Rose City Farmers Market, located at 302 S. Broadway in Downtown Tyler. Visit them on Facebook at rosecityfamersmarket.com and foodcoalition.org.

April 7th (2pm) - ETSO Presents “Following the Ninth” - “Following the Ninth” is a documentary film about the global impact of Beethoven’s final symphony. Celebrated to this day for its ability to heal, repair, and bring people together across great divides, the Ninth has become an anthem of liberation and hope that has inspired many around the world: • At Tiananmen Square in 1989, students played the Ninth over loudspeakers as the army came in to crush their struggle for freedom. • In Chile, women living under the Pinochet dictatorship sang the Ninth at torture prisons, where men inside took hope when they heard their voices. • As the Berlin Wall came down in December 1989, it collapsed to the sound of Leonard Bernstein conducting Beethoven’s Ninth as an “Ode To Freedom.” • In Japan each December, the Ninth is performed hundreds of times, often with 10,000 people in the chorus. Following the Ninth gives us insight into the heightened importance of this massive communal Ninth in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. Directed and produced by Kerry Candaele—who previously produced “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Prices,” “Iraq for Sale,” and the documentary
“A League of Their Own.” “Following the Ninth” traces these stories, intertwining them with the history of the Ninth itself to create a moving ode to hope, freedom, and the power of art. Tickets are $7-$12. April 12th (7pm) - The Legendary Johnny Rodriguez in Concert - Texas Country Music Hall of Famer Johnny Rodriguez has had fifteen top-ten singles and six number one hits since 1973. For tickets call (866)710-8942. Tickets start at $40. microchipping prices of $5 through the month of April, plus a one-day discounted rabies and microchipping event. Pet owners can take advantage of the discounted rate by bringing their pets to the city’s temporary animal shelter, 3393 Grande Blvd., 10am-4pm on weekdays. “Filling out the paperwork takes longer than the actual microchipping,” said Shelter Manager Shawn Markmann. At 6pm on April 14th, the microchip and rabies vaccination clinic will be in Hillside Park, 1111 E. Erwin St. Rabies vaccinations will be discounted to $10 and done by local veterinarians. “If your dog gets lost or gets picked up, then you have an identifier to get your pet back to you, and if your animal is stolen it also helps retrieve ownership,” Markmann said, adding that all of the animal control officers have microchip scanners on their trucks to help find the owner before they go into the shelter. The Tyler Animal Shelter also is accepting donations to help the pets in their care. Dry pet food is accepted as part of its pet food bank program, which has given out 1,500 pounds of food since its inception. The food is given to families who want to give up their pets because they cannot afford to feed them. Other donations needed include white towels of any size, stainless steel food bowls, and hard rubber chew toys, similar to the Kong brand toys.

Food Spring and Outdoor Patios Go Hand in Hand:
Where to Eat & Drink Al Fresco This Spring It’s that time of year - time to celebrate patio season by sitting outside and enjoying a patio. From garden atmospheres to cocktail bars and restaurants with expansive outdoor spaces, these establishments offer al fresco drinking and dining along with the opportunity to soak up some vitamin D. Whether you are about grabbing a drink or just enjoying a meal and the cool spring atmosphere, Tyler has something for your tastes. If you are seeking breakfast, brunch, afternoon cocktails, or a nice relaxing dinner, a local patio is a great place to spend the cooler springtime. Before it gets too hot, check out some of our reader’s favorite fun patios in Tyler. Chuy’s Mexican Eatery (5935 S. Broadway, Tyler (903)5092489) - Serving “big as yo’ face” burritos and other Tex-Mex dishes, Chuy’s is a great place to unwind after work. The Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken is to die for. Happy hour specials include drinks and food as well as a free chip bar inside in the bar area. The patio is covered by a palapa and has wind windows and fans which makes it nice year round. Also, large groups can easily sit outside on the patio. Inside is a fun, kitschy, Elvis-heavy setting. The Catch (1714 S. Beckham, Tyler, (903)596-8226) - The cajun-inspired menu at The Catch brings locals and tourist in by droves and the outdoor patio is a great place to stretch out and enjoy a huge pan of boiled crawfish. This no frills, laid-back seafood restaurant’s covered patio has picnic style tables, ceiling fans and will protect you from the wind and sun. The Admiral’s Platter is great to share family-style at the table. All of the dishes come with huge portions with the plates are piled high. The shrimp po’boy rivals New Orleans with large fresh fried shrimp and remoulade sauce all combo’d to make a great sandwich. Dakota’s Chophouse (4803 Old Bullard Rd., Tyler, (903)5816700) - Dakota’s offers choice steaks, seafood and global wines served in sophisticated but never stuffy setting inside, but if you are wanting something more casual, we suggest sitting outside on the lovely patio. Live music makes for an overall enjoyable experience. It doesn’t get better than relaxing at Dakota’s on the patio on a Saturday night. Oysters Rockefeller are some of the best we had. ETX Brewing Co. & The Porch (221 S. Broadway, Downtown Tyler, (903)6307720) - ETX Brewery has been open for a while offering craft beers, tables inside, picnic tables outside, and a wonderful atmosphere reminiscent of the Austin vibe. When it’s warm outside, they will open the garage doors to combo the two spaces, making it expansive and open. Now, The Porch, located next door to ETX Brewery is open serving food with a unique menu to accompany ETX’s Brewing’s locallymade craft beers. The menu has classics like buildyour-own burgers as well as original creations like the Mac ‘n Cheese Fries (add bacon), Fried Cheese 14 • EGuideMagazine.com
Curds, and The Kitchen Sink: a sandwich on a hoagie with a choice of three meats, two cheeses and sides. The on-site brews are often seasonal so try them all with a “Flight.” We love the Brickstreet Blonde (a classic American blonde ale that is light, crisp, and lightly hopped with a mild maltiness), the Downtown Cherry Brown (a brown ale bearing notes of tart cherry), Hitching Post (a mellow amber ale with a faint caramel influence), and the rich Coffee City Stout (a dark beer made with a little locally roasted coffee and Belgian chocolate). FRESH by Brookshire’s (6991 Old Jacksonville Hwy., Tyler, freshbybrookshires. com) - FRESH is so much more than an excellent grocery store. Outside, the sidewalk cafe-style patio atmosphere is a nice place to sit after dark. This is a great way to spend a spring evening with a cocktail in hand. Our favorite pizza, along with thousands of other’s, is the Bee’s Knees, topped with roasted garlic, a variety of cheeses, sopressata, Italian sausage, local spicy honey and fresh thyme. Music Elvis Returns to Tyler:
World Famous Tribute Performer Travis Powell in Concert Again April 27th at 7pm, Elvis Tribute performer, Travis Powell returns to Tyler to perform at the KE Bushman’s Concert Hall. Who could beat the King of Rock and Roll with his song, “Suspicious Minds?” Not many. But there is one man who comes close — Travis Powell. This 34-year-old North Carolina native has traveled the nation as an Elvis impersonator for years. With his whiskey-smooth vocals and “Well, thank ya, thank ya very much” lines, most people can’t tell the difference. East Texas is in luck, because this smooth impersonator will perform songs from Elvis’ 1968 comeback special and 1970’s concert years. In the two-part act, Powell dons a svelte, playful black leather-clad outfit like Elvis wore in the ‘68 comeback. Powell will also be seen wearing the iconic Las Vegas-era white jumpsuit and singing songs like “American Trilogy” and “If I Can Dream.” Houston promoter Steve Fountain has been producing Elvis tribute shows for 10 years and said Powell is one of the best. “He (Powell) takes you back in time,” Fountain said. “It’s as if you are watching the real Elvis in Vegas. He is amazing.” Powell has won many Elvis tribute contests, including the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino’s “A Tribute to the King” competition in January, which put $25,000 in prize money in that jeweled jumpsuit pocket of his. Powell’s love of Elvis started when he was four. “I have a VHS tape of myself in my grandparent’s living room in a jumpsuit singing Elvis songs,” Powell said. “I just wanted to be Elvis. He was cool to me and had an amazing voice.” Though the avid Elvis fan never got to meet his hero, Powell believes Elvis was a “great guy.” “One of the things that doesn’t get mentioned much about Elvis is how he helped others,” Powell said. “You can go to Graceland and see a lot of the
different checks he wrote to people and different organizations. We all have our flaws, but deep down I think he was just a great guy who cared about people.” Besides having a big heart, Powell said Elvis had “it.” “He had charisma, what you’d call ‘it,’ in the entertainment business,” Powell said. “He could walk on stage and just smile and people loved him. I wanted to be Elvis.” If someone had told Powell at four years old that he would be performing as the greatest entertainer of all time, he’d think they were crazy. “Second of all, I’d be like, ‘Yes!’” Powell said. “I would be very happy. And I am. I get to live the dream every day and go to work happy. I don’t know too many people in this world that enjoy everything about their job. I’m very blessed.” Powell invites the community to attend this two-hour show for “a great night of good, clean fun.” Special guest 14 year old rising Elvis tribute artist Moses Snow will open the show. VIP tickets are $40 and reserved tickets are $20-$30. To purchase tickets, you can contact Fountain at (832)312-0074 or email stevemdxelvis@gmail.com. For more information about Travis Powell, you can visit etatravispowell.com.

Edom hosts great acoustic concerts in the only “listening room” in the area. The Old Firehouse is an intimate, smoke-free, and alcohol-free “coffeehouse” music room. Admission is $15 at the door. Advance admission is $12 until 3pm Friday before the concert. For tickets, go to theoldfirehouse.net or call (903)852-ART1 (2781). The Old Firehouse is located at 8241 FM 279 in Edom. Named “Best Group/Duo” in the 2014 International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA’s), acoustic-duo Ryanhood got their first break more than a decade ago as street-performers at Boston’s Quincy Market. It was there that Ryan Green and Cameron Hood were spotted by a college booking agent and thrust into the college touring scene, where “Campus Activities Magazine” would soon name them “one of the most requested acts by college buyers all across the country.” Cameron Hood’s rich and folky lead vocals, Ryan Green’s explosive guitar and mandolin riffs, and their airtight vocal harmonies prompted the Arizona Daily Star to call them, “a match made in radio heaven.” Ryanhood has collectively performed more than 800 shows in 45 U.S. states, where their crossgenerational sound has been equally at home in colleges, coffee-houses, concert halls, churches, and living rooms. They currently reside in their hometown of Tucson, AZ, where they have won more than a dozen Tucson Music Awards including “Best Folk Band” and “Best Rock Band” (you can decide for yourself which is most accurate).

Blind Pursuit:
Folk Family Revival Returns to Stanley’s
Chasing Dreams By Johnny Griffith
In science, there is a phenomenon known as the Butterfly Effect which states, that in a complex system, small changes in one place can have a larger effect elsewhere. This is best illustrated in the hypothetical example of a butterfly flapping its wings in Mexico and causing a hurricane in China. A more practical example of this would be the formation of the band Blind Pursuit, based out of Palestine, Texas. An amalgamation of sound and styles brought to the table by each individual member makes up the sound that is Blind Pursuit. It is the end result of five people from different backgrounds and geographical origins, ending up in a small town in east Texas and magic happening. Hailing from Southeast Louisiana, Maine, Cayuga, and Harmony, the odds of these five people intermix of sounds in your catalog but how would you acting were astronomical, but small changes had describe your sound? large effects and Blind Pursuit has been a staple in Blind Pursuit: Wow! was a great asset. They have been invaluable in helping us birth this album. Johnny: What has been your favorite moment, on stage or off, as a group so far? Blind Pursuit: I think it has been a thousand small moments of connection with our fans. We’ve heard stories where our songs touched someone going through a divorce, or something we sang really resonated with someone going through a tough time, and you just stop for a second after the mad rush and adrenaline goes away, and you think about how you’re affecting people and the connections you’re making. When we see people singing along with our songs, grabbing someone and dancing, when you see an emotional reaction - that’s the good stuff, the reason we do what we do. Johnny: What is in the works for the year? Blind Pursuit: We’ve got another handful of songs and hopefully, that will translate into a new project as well. Whether the next step is an EP or a full-length album is yet to be determined. Johnny: What’s in the water down in Palestine, between Blind Pursuit, Blacktop Mojo, Kolby Cooper, and others… seems like Palestine has become a serious music town. What’s your take on it? Blind Pursuit: Every once in awhile, “magic” happens in the most unlikely of places. If you’ve seen the documentary on Muscle Shoals and the music that came out of that small studio in Alabama, then you kind of have insight into the madness behind the magic. All these acts from Palestine are backed by the most awesome community of people who rally behind us and get the word out, grassroots style. The people here truly love music and they believe in us, or we wouldn’t be able to do what we love. We have a connection, not only through the town we’re from but through our producer and the studio we’ve all recorded at, Audioworx. Johnny: What experience do you hope first timers will have at a Blind Pursuit show? Blind Pursuit: Someone recently left a review on our Facebook page that sums it up perfectly: “Bet you will leave their concert feeling like your soul is a little more free than when you walked in.” We hope that everyone will leave feeling a little lighter and a little more connected to their fellow man. In a world where we are bombarded with distractions, we hope people can come and reconnect and feel more human than when they came in. We hope the love and passion that we have for life and music can be felt and translates well to concert goers. Blind Pursuit can be found at facebook.com/ Blindpursuit and blindpursuit.com.
April 6th, Folk Family Revival will return to East Texas at Stanley’s Famous BBQ! Don’t be fooled by the name, these guys are not a folk band. They are best described as an altcountry/rock and roll band, but you don’t have to listen long to hear the influences of Bob Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, The Band, Donovan and many others. Folk Family Revival may be best described as a kaleidoscopic folk-country-rock and roll band, but they’re not wild about labeling their sound. They’d rather let the music do the talking. Tickets are on sale for $7 for 18 and up. Doors open at 8:30pm. The concert will be 8-11pm at Stanley’s Famous Pit BBQ, 525 S. Beckham Ave., Tyler. For more info call (903)593-0311 or purchase tickets at stanleysfamous.com.

Red Dirt Festival is a Sell Out
The Jazz Connection: Spreading The Good Grooves By Johnny Griffith For a genre of music that is often called “America’s Classical,” jazz is often seen as a genre not easily accessible. Typically, the further you get away from larger cities, the options for exposure are greater. Here in East Texas, the musical landscape is largely taken up by variations of rock and country. In the midst of it all, a few intrepid missionaries spread gospel of the Jazz. One of the few bands that carry these musical disciples are The Jazz Connection (TJC) based out of Tyler. The quintet has come together and bonded over their love of all things Jazz and can be seen around East Texas bringing the joy of their music to the people. Johnny: What is the current lineup of the band? TJC: The full complement of musicians is a quintet comprised of: George Faber on keyboard who is the retired Director of Fine Arts for the Tyler Independent School District. He is from East Texas and is a staple in the East Texas music scene. He has his own group called Faber and Friends that plays everywhere. Phil Rumbley on bass is a long time East Texas resident and is in great demand as one of the area’s premier bass players. He is also the bass teacher at Dogan Middle School in Tyler. J.T. Pundt on trumpet/flugelhorn was born and raised in San Antonio and has lived in East Texas for 38 years. He is a mechanical engineer by day for Eastman Chemical Company in Longview, but trumpet playing is his passion. He currently leads The Jazz Connection and also plays with other Big Bands in the area. Dr. Sarah Roberts on sax hails from Iowa and is the Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at UT Tyler. She is in great demand as both a performer and clinician. She has been instrumental in establishing The Jazz Academy in Tyler, teaching high school age students about playing jazz. She is a Vandoren Regional Artist. Joey Monk on drums is a long time East Texas
resident and is a professional drummer. He has toured the country with several different groups and is in great demand throughout East Texas. In addition to The Jazz Connection, Joey plays locally with Otis and the Metros and other groups. Johnny: How did you guys meet and when did the idea of a band get kicked around for the first time? TJC: We owe our beginnings to the vision of Dr. John Webb, who was the Professor of Jazz Studies at UT Tyler. Although we have all known each other for many years and played together in different groups, John was able to pull us all together in 2010 with a common vision of playing America’s Original Art Form - Jazz. John was a professional musician long before he was a professor at UT Tyler, and his knowledge of the musical repertoire is astounding. He constantly challenged us to play at a very high level with music from great jazz artists like Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie, etc. But more than just the technical aspects of jazz, John saw playing jazz music as “a lively conversation between friends.” Those friends include not only members of the band but also the audience. That conversation creates a connection between people that transcends the spoken word and touches your soul. John relocated to California in 2017, and we honor his legacy with every performance. Johnny: How is the Jazz Scene in East Texas? TJC: There are a surprising number of really good jazz musicians in East Texas! And the Jazz scene seems to be expanding, thanks to many local venues that support live music. I think once people get a chance to hear good live jazz, they get hooked, and they want more. We have a pretty loyal following of fans that attend our performances and ask us where we are playing next. Those fans tend to spend money at the establishments that host us, so jazz music creates a win-win for the community. Johnny: About how many gigs on average do you play a month? TJC: We are currently playing three to five times per month. Johnny: What’s the farthest you guys have traveled for a gig so far? TJC: We’ve gone as far as Mount Vernon, Texas, though we play regularly at Los Pinos Ranch
Open Every Day at Noon All Ages Welcome Noon til 7pm 21+ ID Required after 7pm
Vineyards in Pittsburg, Texas. Johnny: In a musical landscape dominated by rock and country, how has the reception been to a Jazz band? TJC: The people that hear us generally respond very positively. For those new to jazz, I think they are surprised that the music is so accessible. There are many tunes with beautiful chord progressions that add depth and texture to the music; there are a variety of tempos and styles that add musical interest to a performance. Even people who are primarily rock and country fans are surprised that the standard blues chord progression, which they may be more familiar with, is a foundation for many jazz tunes. Musical roots transcend different musical styles. Johnny: What’s been your best memory as a band to this point? TJC: There are so many rewarding times when we see that we made that connection with our audience. It’s hard to pick just one! We did have a really fun gig at ETX Brewing Company on Halloween. The band dressed up in costumes and everybody had a good time. Johnny: Is there one particular style of Jazz you focus more on or is it a pretty good cross-section of the genre? TJC: We play a pretty good cross-section of styles. In any given show, you might hear Jazz Standards, Bebop, Hard Bop, Dixieland, AfroCuban Jazz, Latin Jazz, and Modal Jazz. We like to mix it up. Johnny: What would you say your most requested song is from your crowds? TJC: That’s a hard question since our music is so diverse. It really depends on the mood of the crowd.

Sometimes they are in the mood for something up-tempo like “A Night in Tunisia,” or “There Will Never Be Another You,” or if they are feeling romantic, something like “My Romance” or “My Funny Valentine.” Johnny: What do you hope first-time listeners will take from a Jazz Connection show? TJC: We always hope they sense the joy we feel when playing this music and that they feel the connection that the music creates between people. We also hope they gain an appreciation for the artistry of so many that came before us and contributed to this uniquely American art form. Johnny: Any can’t miss shows coming up in the next couple of months? TJC: One show I would definitely recommend is FRESH by Brookshire’s on April 7th. It is an outdoor venue (they have a great patio), very laid back, great food and drinks, and we get a chance to stretch out a little bit. Come, relax, bring the kids, and have a great time! We keep our calendar current at facebook.com/ tylerjazzconnection. Johnny: Thanks again for your time. TJC: Thank you for helping us spread the gospel of Jazz in East Texas!

Events & Plays
April 5th-8th (Nightly at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:30pm) - “Screwtape” - Screwtape, a senior devil from hell, has delegated some authority to a junior fiend, Wormwood, whose assignment is to seize the soul of a very human and lovable young man. This might be called a devilish dramatic contest with high-level meaning thrashed out in terms of brilliant low-level comedy. The rather charming Wormwood is being critically supervised in this, his first case, by that extraordinary devil, Screwtape. Advice from this old hand from hell is devastatingly perceptive of human foibles and, despite the love of a wonderful young girl, our young man is in terrible danger. It’s really a close decision and, in a dazzling resolution, the audience learns something important about hell, heaven, religion, and humanity. Tyler Civic Theatre is located at 400 Rose Park Dr., Tyler, next to the Tyler Rose Garden Center. For more info call (903)592-0561 or go to tylercivictheatre.com.

Earth Day at Caldwell Zoo This Month Kids and the zoo just naturally go together. Caldwell Zoo has a
special area just for kids - those of the human variety and those of the animal variety. And this time of year, it's all about the frogs that are being found all around the area. Many frogs are nocturnal, and rely on their camouflage to stay safe while they rest during the day. While our doors and windows might not work very well for camouflage, these little guys are generally safe as long as they’re too high for small predators to reach them. Most people recognize that frogs undergo metamorphosis, changing from tadpoles to adult frogs. But did you know that more than just the shape of the frog changes? Tadpoles breathe with gills and eat plants, while adult frogs breathe with lungs and eat insects. Several school programs are offered as well as home school opportunities. The 30-minute programs that are offered either on zoo grounds (free with zoo admission) or in your classroom (call for outreach costs) include Critter Tales (preschool), Critter Covers (K-2nd grade), Animal Families (K-2nd grade), It All Makes Sense (K-2nd grade), Animal Addresses (3rd-6th grade), Going, Going, Gone (3rd-6th grade), and the hugely popular Secrets of Survival (3rd-6th grade). This Place is a Zoo, Conservation Corps, and Dinners and Diners (7th-12th grade) are offered for older children. For more info go to caldwellzoo.org > School Programs. Inside the Artist’s Studio:
Gallery Main Street Elephant in the Room By Derrick White The city of Tyler’s Gallery Main Street, serves as a cornerstone of the Downtown Arts and Culture District and opened in August 2009 as a fine art gallery. The gallery shares space with the City of Tyler Main Street Department and Heart of Tyler, Inc., as well as the administrative offices of Liberty Hall. Located in the beautifully renovated building at 110 W. Erwin St., Downtown on the square, the gallery offers visitors the opportunity to view fine art created by area artists. Exhibits at the gallery rotate on a continuous schedule, so there is always something new and interesting to see. The current juried exhibition on display is a group, idiom inspired, show titled “Elephant in the Room.” Participating artists were asked to creatively interpret and create artwork defining an issue everyone is aware of, but nobody wants to talk about - an “elephant in the room” if you must. The exhibition is on view through the month of April, finishing up May 1st. The show has a lot of diversity ranging from literal theme interpretations to very esoteric creations. There is a variety of small and large-scale works. Most of the pieces are two-dimensional and hang on the wall (paintings, drawing, and
photographs) but a few pieces contain three-dimensional visual elements including sculptures. “Elephant in the Room” features the artwork of over twenty artists including: Dana Cargile, Rita A. Fryer, Amanda Hatfield, Dace Lucia Kidd, Nancy Kimbrough, Maegan Kirschner, Teri Liptak, Dana Lynch, Shawna Lynch, Jennie Price Lyra, Jimmy Morrison, Joel Nichols, Mary Alice Orito, Nancy Patterson, Anthony Piekarski, Mary Ann Post, Chelsea Purgahn, Cory Rhodes, Jamin Shepherd, Harold Vincent, and John York. I am impressed with the show overall. I feel it is important for artists to share their work with an audience so I congratulate all of the artists willing to put their work out there for consideration. Cheers to everyone who entered the exhibit and compliments to everyone selected. One of the exhibits that caught my attention was Amanda Hatfield’s “Who’s the Real Monster?,” an exquisite mixed media sculpture of a woman with antlers. This stark naturalistic form has amazing attention to detail and incredible proportional aspect. It is powerful and emotional allowing the viewer to contemplate the narrative of the woman’s blindfold, hair braid, dripping antlers, and arrow penetrating her throat. The artist mentions in a printed statement, “It took me a while to really figure out this piece; for a long time it sat unfinished in my house, unpainted and incomplete. After adding the gold, she became this figure of nature, blinded and pierced by the arrow of man, corrupted by the gold dripping from her antlers.” Amanda has two other selections in the exhibit, each one masterfully executed and commanding in its similar subject matter of the female form. A watercolor of a dripping eyed woman being impaled

by arrows is haunting, disturbing, and captivating. Again the artist states, “I tend to paint women a lot and I think that has something to do with how they can evoke a connection to nature. No matter how badly you hurt her, she’s still growing. I like to think the world is the same way.” Hatfield’s watercolor painting titled “War Ate a Girl and Spat Out a Woman” shows a strikingly beautiful woman in a dead stare with the viewer while ignoring the groping negative space shapes of hands vying for her body. This is a formidable declaration and certainly fits the show’s theme with all of today’s headlines of people refusing to ignore the elephant in the room any longer when it comes to sexual assault, abuse, and inappropriate behavior. A more literal stand out in the exhibit was a small collage by Mary Alice Orito called “Elephant in the Room.” The composition has an image of an elephant sitting circus style and wearing a crown of sorts (a performer). Text in the design include ‘complicity,’ ‘bully,’ ‘lies,’ and ‘racism.’ The piece is asymmetrically balanced and has a sharp red line tearing horizontally through the configuration. Orito’s statement concludes the image and words in the collage “represent the harshness of the current political environment.” Mary Alice Orito had two other artworks included in the exhibit both equally strong. My eye was continually called over to a painting titled “Horizontal” by Mary Post with its striking gold-leaf negative space and odd subject of a fullbodied employee flat on a bed or gurney. The artist mentions, “My painting delves into stability and change in the life of this working woman. I strive to honor her by positioning her in a horizontal orientation and surrounding her with an atmosphere of

shimmering gold.” “This Ordinary World” is a fun and mesmerizing painting by John York. In a composition where Red Grooms (an American artist best known for his colorful pop art depicting frenetic scenes of modern life) meets DC comics and Where’s Waldo, York, “sought to entertain viewers and myself by making my friends and neighbors into elephants.” A dark unambiguous and commanding piece also on exhibit is “LIKE” by Dace Lucia Kidd. The painting is a large-scale, black on black, minimalist composition. Its content resonated with me about society’s insatiable thirst for attention. The execution of the piece is precise and avoids any evidence of an expressive mark or the artist’s hand. I also very much enjoyed “Food Choice” by Jennie Lyra for its colorful layers and competing visual directions of text and images. Take some time to go visit this exhibition yourself and see what stands out the most to you. Don’t forget to vote for the People’s Choice Award by writing the corresponding number for your favorite artwork on a ballot and leaving it in the voting box. Enter now for possible selection in the gallery’s new upcoming Solo Show. Gallery Main Street is offering one artist an opportunity to fill the gallery and showcase their work. To be considered for selection, artists should submit three pieces exemplifying their work and provide a description (artist’s statement) and total number of pieces. Entries are due by April 22nd. This is a juried exhibit and results will be announced on April 28th. Gallery Main Street is located at 110 W. Erwin St., Downtown Tyler. Books
What’s In a Book Op-Ed by Gini Rainey There’s a whole new world waiting for you between the covers of your next book. It’s no secret that I love to read, and that I’ve been doing so for most of my life. Back in the day, when there wasn’t a myriad of electronic devices vying for everyone’s attention, reading was the best way to escape reality. Even though e-readers have become a way of life for most people, including me, there’s nothing I like better than to hold the physical book in my hands, open it up to the first page, and dig into a world created by someone who has a story to tell. I wish that more parents would encourage their children to read because it helps to develop their imaginations and creativity more than any other method. Just think about all the books you’ve read and how you have pictured the heroes and heroines in your own mind. That’s why character development is one of the most important skills for writers to possess, because without well-developed characters, the reader will have a difficult time wrapping his brain around and immersing himself in even the most intriguing story line. I would like to issue a challenge to anyone who loves to read. Do you find yourself reading nothing but one genre of books, i.e. romance, mystery? I do and then I realize that there are so many other types of books available, and I pick something totally opposite – just to broaden my horizons. I would

Ryanhood
NAMED “BEST GROUP/DUO” in the 2014 International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA’s), acoustic-duo Ryanhood got their first break more than a decade ago as street-performers at Boston’s Quincy Market. It was there that Ryan Green and Cameron Hood were spotted by a college booking agent and thrust into the college touring scene, where Campus Activities Magazine would soon name them “one of the most requested acts by college buyers all across the country.” Cameron Hood’s rich and folky lead vocals, Ryan Green’s explosive guitar and mandolin riffs, and their airtight vocal harmonies prompted the Arizona Daily Star to call them, “a match made in radio heaven.” Ryanhood has collectively performed more than 800 shows in 45 U.S. states, where their cross-generational sound has been equally at home in colleges, coffee-houses, concert halls, churches, and living rooms. They currently reside in their hometown of Tucson, AZ, where they have won more than a dozen Tucson Music Awards including “Best Folk Band” and “Best Rock Band” (you can decide for yourself which is most accurate).
