With this event came great pride as the employees join together to support charity and give back to the community.

Now, every runner counts because 100% of runner revenues go to the nonprofit partners.

So far in the races history, a substantial impact has been made in the lives of families to the tune of more than $500,000 raised in just four short years of running.

By focusing on the runner, volunteer, and spectator experiences of race day, they hope to make an impact on the lives of those involved to create a healthier, happier community - firmly believing that motivating someone to get off the couch and move can change their life. This is something they have witnessed and are proud to say that FRESH 15 has done for many people.

“I ran the Freshie 1k with my 4-year old grandson today. His Mom ran the 15K. We had a blast. I drove out from Dallas to run it with him.

My daughter said pretty much everything was about the race from the time they picked up their race packets earlier in the week until we ran the race. The backpack, the sunglasses, the shirt… he loved it and was so excited about running in the race. And his finisher’s medal will be the subject of this week’s ‘show and tell.’ I’m sure there were lots of things that didn’t go as well as you all might have hoped – but from where we were, it was such a smooth event. Just wanted to give you some positive feedback. I know it’s a TON of effort to put something like this together – high fives and fist bumps to you all, to all the race-day volunteers and all who support you.” – Dick Rawlings Several races will be held. Both FRESH 15 10k and 5k courses take runners on a journey through beautiful South Tyler.

The Lil’ Freshie 1k invites children ages 12 and under to run inside the FRESH parking lot which takes children on a route that is approximately 0.6 miles long.

The 15k (9.3 miles) and 5k (3.1 miles) courses take runners on a journey through South Tyler and the beautiful Hollytree Country Club. The elevation is a challenge and charts can be found at bgcracing.com. Packet pick-ups will be at FRESH by Brookshire’s, located at 6991 Old Jacksonville Hwy. in Tyler March 1st (4-8pm), March 2nd (12 noon-9m), and March 3rd (5-6:30am). Elite athletes are encouraged to register by filling out an application online.

After the race, be sure to stick around for the

East Texas Symphony Orchestra Continues March 24th, a highlight of the season will be the return of “Time for Three.”

This trio of classically trained musicians performed with the ETSO in 2015. During this year’s concert, they will present a blend of classical favorites and mash-ups of music by artists such as Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, and The Beatles.

April 28th, the season will conclude with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, which includes the powerful “Ode to Joy” in the last movement. The orchestra will be joined by four soloists, the ETSO Chorus, and the combined UT Tyler Chorus and Patriot Singers. Cameron Rose, director of choirs at The University of Texas at Tyler, will direct the choruses.

These races are USTAF certified with chip timing provided by Trinity Timing. The $22,000 prize purse will be divided between the top 10 male and female finishers and the top four male and female masters’ division finishers. As part of FitCity Tyler, FRESH 15 is proud to award the top local finishers cash prizes. Any current resident of Tyler, Texas is eligible to win prize money for being the first Tyler local to cross the 15k finish line.

FRESH’s famous Swag Bag is available for all participants. Capstone Photography is the official FRESH 15 race photographer. With your race entry, you receive rights to download all of your high-resolution race photos at no cost.

The race will begin and end at FRESH by Brookshire’s, located at 6991 Old Jacksonville Hwy. in Tyler. There will be a Gear Check station available. Participants should plan to arrive at FRESH by Brookshire’s at least 30 minutes early to find adequate parking. There will be parking available at Juls Events Center, Swann’s Furniture & Design, and Calvary Baptist Church, as well as businesses close to the parking lot of FRESH. This monthly event benefits Pets Fur People, who is committed to reduce and ultimately eliminate euthanasia as an acceptable method of population control for unwanted dogs and cats. They promote the positive results of spay/neuter programs to reduce dog and cat overpopulation, and pride themselves in teaching responsible pet guardianship.

Tyler State Park Offers Springtime Outdoor Fun

At Tyler State Park, you can boat, fish, swim in the lake, hike, mountain bike, picnic, geocache, camp, bird watch, and study nature. It is located at 789 Park Road 16, Tyler. All events are free with fee paid for admission into the park. Adults are $6 daily, and children 12 years and under are free.

This record show is an event where you can shop thousands of records, CDs, and music related March 3rd (2-4pm) - Backcountry Hike Series Escape into the forest with a backcountry hike for items and collectibles. Country music recording artist and rising star Justin Dean will be at the show 9-11am.

This young man is like a shooting star with a full bodied, old fashioned, country music sound that will move you.

Country music recording star and TV sensation Bob Mauldin will be at this year’s Tyler Record Show. Bob is well known as a fantastic musician and musical performer. He will be at the event from 11am-1pm autographing merchandise and saying hello to his friends and fans.

Attending 1-3pm will be Rock & Roll Metal star, Russell Lee Underwood, from the dynamic, thrashing, scorching hot metal band “Edge of Misery.” Russell has been playing his blues and rock style guitar since he was 13 years old which segued into metal over the years. He will be on hand for two hours of the event selling his CD’s and signing autographs, and doing meet and greet with fans.

Gospel and folk music recording star Kit Scott (and star of Halloween “Harvey’s Festival of Fear” as Fast Freddy) is among the list of cool guests for this year’s show. Come get his autograph and purchase some of his amazing music. He will be at the event 3-5pm.

Every kind of music in every kind of format with an emphasis on vinyl records will be the theme of this event. Record dealers, music collectors, and music themed crafters will be there.

Tyler Vinyl Record Show To Host Many Celebrities, Records, and More

March 10th (10am-12 noon) - Lakeshore Nature Hike - Join in for a 2-mile hike and experience the legacy of Tyler State Park. Learn the story of the young men, the Civilian Conservation Corps, that built the park and become a part of their legacy.

Meet at the Silver Canoe Park Store.

March 10th (2-3pm) - Does This Stream Need a Doctor - Come out and measure the water quality by the wildlife that lives in it. Identify animals that exist in good or poor water quality and discover how you can get involved in keeping an eye on Texas’s water.

March 17th (10-11am) - Wildlife Walk - Come learn to identify edible wild plants and how to prepare them. Many edible plants may be seen.

Learn about plant safety too.

March 17th (2-3pm) - Navigation Revelation - What do you do when your GPS batteries die?

Learn to use a compass and a map for your navigation needs. Bring a compass if you have one or we have a few loaners. Dress for the weather and be ready for a short walk.

They are asking volunteers to help clean the site and maintain its trails and walkways for visitors. By Johnny Griffith Formed in 2011 by three friends in a garage, True Vine Brewing Co. sold their first keg of beer to a local restaurant in 2014 and enjoyed the novel status of Tyler’s first brewery. Four years since that first keg, True Vine has enjoyed the success that often accompanies hard work, perseverance, and a quality product. From the establishment of the brewery at the Englewood location in 2013, to the Open Taps events, to the opening of a true Tap Room, to beginning to can their beers for wider distribution, the trajectory of the brewery has been steadily upward for founders, managing partners, husband and wife duo Ryan and Traci Dixon. Now, it’s 2018 and things are as busy as ever for the crew over at True Vine and brewers Ryan Dixon and Scott Moss have released some popular brews: Daddy’s Juice Box New England Style IPA, as well as some new seasonal beers coming this spring and summer to watch out for.

All of this has culminated in a move to a new location this spring with a grand re-opening set for March 31st. The new facility will allow True Vine to accommodate the growing demand as well as set themselves up for future growth. I caught up with Ryan Dixon recently to see what the news is from the brewery at the new digs at 2453 Earl Campbell Parkway: Johnny: What was the moment you all looked around and knew it was time to look for a new location?

Ryan: Without the opportunity to grow into adjoining spaces or the land at Englewood, we knew that our time there was limited.

We truly were capped for more production and space for guests at events. We had a blast establishing the great True Vine Community there.

Johnny: What were some of the mental checklist requirements for the new spot?

Ryan: Space - in terms of production growth and land for the future beer garden. We have always wanted to be a destination space. A place where people can come sit, relax, and enjoy a “get-away,” a break from the busy lives we all live.

We needed office space, production space, room for an indoor tap room, restrooms and an outdoor space for community. Being a primarily outdoor venue, covered space was also a must. Being that we have always been a “family-friendly” brewery, space for the kiddos to run around was also a need.

Johnny: How long did the search last before the new location was secured?

Ryan: One of our True Vine investors, Jim, found and purchased the building in October 2016 for a possible investment project for his company. After he told Traci and I about the building being a possible “back up plan for a future True Vine,” we came to check it out and immediately fell in love with what it “could be.”

Shortly thereafter, the project began to renovate the dilapidated building and preparation for a brewing facility.

Johnny: Any specific challenges that were unexpected in getting the new facility up to speed?

Ryan: Being a production brewery with beer on area shelves and local draft bars, planning to move a beer factory around scheduled production was tough. Especially since we are using all of the existing equipment, minimizing our down time getting it all online here at Earl Campbell was crucial. We ended up a couple weeks behind but we are now all up and running.

Johnny: What are the immediate improvements the new facility offers?

Ryan: Our former location on Englewood was 2000 square feet.

Here, our building is 10,000. Before, we had 4 official parking spaces plus the road and generosity of the county at the Cotton Belt building parking lot.

We have room for about 100 cars within our property perimeter plus other overflow options.

Also, we are pumped to have official indoor space here. We have nearly 1700 shared feet of heated/cooled space as well as restrooms for both women and men.

Our onsite pavilion and venue space is 1700 square feet of covered area to help with inclement weather and provide shade as well as a 400 square foot stage for bands and musicians.

Johnny: The new location will also be home to Sola Bread and Pizza. What was the genesis of that collaboration?

Ryan: The Sola Bread Company team have been great friends of ours for a long time. Since the beginnings of True Vine, our goal has been to help grow small businesses alongside True Vine. We feel community is always best. Same concepts with our friends and former neighbors, Porch Culture Coffee Roasters, who still reside at 219 S. Englewood, for now.

(903)630-3030 Sola Bread has been doing community pizza nights in their backyard for a few years now. Legit wood fired Neapolitan style pies. Once we nailed down this location, we knew they would be a great fit for onsite food for our patrons. When you enter the True Vine tap room, you’ll be able to order a beer and order Sola Pizza, as well as a variety of artisan style snacks. You will see them prep your pies and bake it in their oven, right there in our shared space.

Johnny: Are there upgrades to the brewing operation that are taking place simultaneously with the move? If not, is there anything on the horizon you can give us a heads up over?

Ryan: True Vine has always taken one step at a time in our growth. We believe in growing it all organically. That being said, we were in need for a new space and a step forward on production capacity. We purchased four new brewing tanks (two water and two fermentation vessels) to help with our production demand. The larger water tanks will allow us to brew 24/7 at some point and the two new fermentation tanks increases production capacity two and a half times. We also have plans for adding more down the line and have allocated connection points and space for future growth. One of the next pieces we will acquire will be our own canning line as well as upgrading some of our main heating and cooling units for beer production.

Johnny: The 4 Year Anniversary and Grand Re-Opening is March 31st. What does True Vine have lined up for that event?

Ryan: March 31st will be FULL and overflowing with beer, music, food, and fun. Early in the day we will be hosting our second annual Beer Run. As of this moment, we have 400+ registrants for the 5K fun run and expect close to 700 for race day. For the 4 Year Anniversary and Grand Re-Opening, starting at 3pm, we have four bands lined up including a few from right here in East Texas, as well as musical guests from Austin, The Rocketboys.

We have 4 confirmed food vendors on site as well as Sola Bread & Pizza Company. We also will be hosting several fun sport tournaments that day including disc golf putting and a corn hole tournament.

As for beer, we are getting closer to having our brand new tap room draft system flowing.

Crafted from original True Vine kegs, our new draft tower will help our bartenders dispense 20 hand crafted beers and sodas for our guests.

Some of the beers that we will be pouring that day will include a special 4 Year Anniversary IPA with four hop varieties, our brand new Giant Slayer Imperial Stout, and many others. It’s going to be a fantastic day!

Johnny: Finally, how would you describe the State of the Craft Beer Union here in East Texas currently and how is the future looking from where you guys stand?

Ryan: We are proud of how far we have all grown in the craft beer community. Seems like everyday someone new is getting turned on to craft beer, the bolder flavors and supporting the small independent breweries here in Texas, just like True Vine. I believe that this will grow immensely in 2018, mainly due to great craft beer being brewed and the great support of locals. Our success has a direct correlation with the community support. With it, every small craft brewery who produces great beer has a fighting chance against big beer.

Josh Collins, local owner and operator, wants everyone to know that “Downtown has a new lunch spot” and it’s a great local bar and grill that is all about community with a “Cheers-type mentality, where everyone is welcome.”

The place is light, bright, and filled with sports memorabilia, with a great-looking bar and high tabletops galore. With a brand new revamped menu, the SportsZone is ready to bring you great food in a space with a different vibe than your regular sports scene. It’s never a loud, in-your face crowd, there’s plenty of parking

While you try your hand at the pool or foosball tables, you can chow down on a great burger with a side of waffle fries. You will really get your fill of sports, as the restaurant is lined with 10 big screen TV’s. The view from any seat in the house is stellar. There is always a Texas team on the screen somewhere in the restaurant.

There’s even TV’s in the restrooms because they don’t want you to miss a second!

Dart aficionados can try their luck at the dart boards or try your hand at a game of beer pong.

“We really support the Downtown culture,” says Collins. “We can be the spot to go to before or after a show at Liberty Theater. I don’t think folks in Tyler realize how many people live and work Downtown and the community continues to grow.”

The Bar and Grill supports local events like Red Dirt BBQ and Music Festival, Hit the Bricks 2nd Saturdays, and the Rose City Farmer’s Market, “to support and spread the word about the great things happening Downtown,” said Collins.

Step inside the bar and grill and you will want to hang out, use the free Wi-Fi, watch some TV, and taste what the kitchen has to offer.

The edible options at the SportsZone are fast and healthy too. Lunch variables include an out of this world chipotle black bean veggie burger, seared tuna salad, and a grilled chicken salad.

Lunch is served Monday-Friday 11am-2pm.

The bar and grill, open 7 days a week, features a great mixture of fare, from “Beginners” like onion rings, pickle fries, frito chili pie, chili cheese waffle fries, “Not your Mamas’s Churros,” humus and naan bread, and battered corn bites.

For more hearty appetites, try the ultimate BLT, fried chicken sandwich, chicken fingers, or their spectacular wings. Their wings are uniquely double-baked with choice of BBQ, lemon pepper, flaming hot or special Zone sauce. The new chickenless wings are so good that you won’t even realize that they are vegetarian! They can also handle to-go orders, and guarantee fast and efficient service during the peak lunch hours. “We want to be known as the new Tyler lunch destination,” said Collins.

The “Out of the Oven” pizzas include margarita, Hawaiian, or the much requested, “Build your own” with toppings including pepperoni, sausage, hamburger, Canadian bacon, black olives, mushrooms, jalapenos, and roasted tomatoes. You can get a super lunch special with a slice of pizza, side salad and a drink for just $8.

The bar is a fully-stocked cornucopia of Texas liquors and beers and the bartenders are super friendly and accommodating. From Lone Star, Shiner, Deep Ellum, ETX Brewery, and True Vine - you’ll find it at SportsZone. Every Tuesday, if it’s made in Texas, it’s on special. And if you are looking for something more exotic, the bar can handle almost any drink imaginable, all you have to do is ask!

Music David Allen:

Honest Music From A Drifting Outlaw

By Johnny Griffith Mainstream country music these days is designed to trick your senses as a consumer. The artist who lay out multiple tracks of autotune, stage show songs, have likely never seen a tractor in reallife. It’s easy to get disillusioned with the product, especially if you want a touch of genuine in your life.

Luckily here in East Texas, we’ve got plenty of local musicians who are the real deal; David Allen might be one of the most authentic of the “Outlaw” country artists. Originally from the central valley of California, Allen moved to Texas at an early age and has been working the stages in this area for years. With a sense of authenticity and respect for where country music came from, David carries on that outlaw spirit with the likes of Waylon, Merle, and Cash.

We caught up to him recently in between dates and got to know him a little better: Johnny: Your bio says you picked up the guitar for the first time at age 17. What caused you to grab one for the first time and how long did it take you to figure out this was something you wanted to do as more than just a hobby?

David: A good friend of mine (Darin Justice) was taking some guitar lessons and asked me if I wanted to start a band with him. I said yes and either I could play the bass or the drums. I couldn’t afford a $1200 drum set, so I bought a used bass for $150.

Johnny: Who were some of your early musical influences?

David: I was a huge Kiss fan, we both were! He had introduced me to Kiss and from there I was a “hair band” fan. It wasn’t until I graduated and started dating a barrel racer that I started listening to country music. She introduced me to Sawyer Brown and from there I fell in love with the “story”

and meanings of the country music.

Johnny: At what point did you decide to start writing your own material and where do you draw your inspiration from?

David: When I finally got an acoustic guitar and started learning chords, I started writing songs. I just thought that was what a musician was supposed to do. So I learned to play “C, F, G” chords first. I must have written 20 songs with those three notes. Forward, backwards, sideways.

When I got bored, I would learn a new key. I am still learning today to play progressions, and I will write three or more songs to every new chord I learn.

Johnny: Your music definitely has a component of the old “outlaw” country of the late 70’s early 80’s and one can definitely pick up threads of “Willie, Waylon, and the boys.” How would you describe your sound?

David: I’m embarrassed to say that I am new to the Waylon sound. That being said, I think he was the greatest writer, singer, and survivor of Nashville. I discovered Waylon about four years ago and he has become my greatest influence.

There is an honesty and energy in every song he sang.

Johnny: Where did the nickname “The Drifting Outlaw” come from?

Johnny: What would you say your percentage of originals to covers are in one of your shows? Or does it depend on the crowd?

David: It depends hugely on the crowd. The bigger the crowd, the more covers. Maybe I’m doing it backwards, but my original songs are so personal that I will do a lot more of them in an acoustic setting than with the full band behind me.

Johnny: What is the current lineup of your stage band and do you primarily play with a full band or do you do some solo shows as well?

David: Both, and I love both in their own way.

Rupert Wates was born in London and studied at Oxford University. He has been a full time songwriter since the late 1990’s.

His music is an eclectic mix of acoustic, melodic art/folk, with flavors of jazz, vaudeville, and cabaret. He has released seven solo CDs. They have been very well reviewed in online press and tracks from them have been played on radio all over the world. In addition, Wates’ songs have been covered by other artists in the UK, Canada, and the US. Since coming to the US in 2006, Wates has won more than 30 songwriting awards. He averages 120 live shows every year, in acoustic venues in every state in America, Canada, and Europe.

He was voted an Artist Of The Year in both 2013 and 2016 by the international house concert network Concerts In Your Home and is the only artist on the entire CIYH database to have been honored with this title twice.

My lead guitarist, Jimmy Piatt, is the best I’ve ever played with - professional, modest, and always prepared. On bass I just lost the Rockabilly Hall of Famer Neil Sheckles for a better offer as a house band leader, but I have Super Dave Visniski now and we are as powerful as ever. Last, but certainly not least is my drummer Mark Wynn, who I’ve known for almost 40 years. I learn something from all of them every time we play.

They are all great men and fantastic musicians.

Johnny: You’ve been playing music in this area for a while now, do you have a favorite memory so far?

David: A couple. Not sure if I should name the venue, but one night a drunk feller was dancing with my wife and decided to pick her up to spin her. He underestimated his strength and she is small, but all muscle. So about half way up they fell backward, he hit his head on the corner of the stage step and started to bleed pretty good. I start my show now with “We are the band that doesn’t stop playing till there is blood on the floor!” A few songs later another, more sober, young man asked her to dance and as they crossed in front of the stage I yelled down to him, “You’re taking your life into your own hands.” I was speaking about the accident earlier but it scared him pretty badly because he thought I meant he shouldn’t be dancing with my wife. The second memory was more ironic. I had just finished a Waylon tribute show and as I was packing up, five police came busting through the door and arrested me! Made me feel like I was in Nashville recording with Waylon.

Johnny: Any shows coming up that stick out

as “must see” events?

David: Anything with the full band.

Everybody is surprised at how good the show is the first time they come. We are consistent with every show. The more people, the higher the energy on stage and in the audience.

Johnny: What’s on the horizon for The Drifting Outlaw through the rest of the year?

David: I really want to finish my album. This is my second, but really the first because I didn’t like some of the sound on the first and wouldn’t release it.

Johnny: What can a first timer expect to see at a David Allen show?

David: You will be surprised! We are the best country band in East Texas! You will get a four hour show of honest country music.

We managed to get a word in with Chris recently to find out more about The Blacksmiths Johnny: What is the current lineup of the band? Any changes over the lifespan of the band?

Chris: The current lineup consists of myself on lead guitar and vocals, Joshua Stewart on drums, Angelo Lopez on bass/rhythm guitar/ vocals, and Ben Carter on bass and vocals.

Angelo and Ben have both been filling the shoes of bass player when available, but recently we decided to shake it up a bit and go with a 4 piece instead of 3 with Angelo on guitar as well...as our busy schedules finally allowed. The lineup has changed immensely over the years. I haphazardly started this project about 6 years ago with a couple of friends just messing around in my kitchen,,,which was the only place we had to set up all the equipment at the time...typical broke musicians haha. We eventually gained a keyboard and rhythm player and were a 5 piece band by the time we started playing shows. We decided to go back to a 3 piece after about a year for convenience and scheduling issues. Our drummer at the time had to move for work but introduced me to Joshua before doing so. Joshua had played with Angelo before with “Something Blue” and I met Ben after watching him play for “King Richard and the Bayou Boys” ...and as they say, the rest was

young age. When we first started, we tried a lot of 90’s stuff and some 80’s Metallica and Misfits which we were pretty decent at but learned pretty quickly what we had more fun with. Even though we’re a bit younger, I feel we were all entranced by that era of music growing up. We were very lucky to have Miss Robin Griffith from XLN on 5th street give us the chance to really explore our potential. We played every Sunday there for quite a while as the house band which gave us a lot of quick feedback from the crowd...and from the venue owner haha.

Johnny: Is there any specific period of classic rock you guys gravitate towards over others?

Chris: Not really, I’ve just personally loved the 70’s era most, but we cover the 60’s and 80’s as well. We do seem to cover a lot of Creedence Clearwater and The Doors though, if that says anything.

Johnny: Where did the band name come from?

Chris: The guys from the original lineup and I were hanging out after practice having a beer or two and trying to come up with something, After a length of time and much pondering, we looked around the room and noticed the main theme of what we were looking at...which was old, broken down, second hand, very junky equipment that I had been hoarding and frankensteining together with duct tape and zip ties for years. I’m really not sure how we didn’t shock or hurt ourselves but I remember us saying…”well, we sure know how to make something out of nothing...like a dang ole’ blacksmith” (speaking of the ramshackle but playable equipment). And just like that, it stuck.

Johnny: do you guys do any originals at this point or is it primarily covers?

Chris: I’ve had a couple of blues tunes in the works for a while but we’ve honestly been so busy playing shows and working full time day jobs or careers it’s been tough to find time, but I think this is our year to shine.

Johnny: You’ve been playing music in this area for a while now, do you have a favorite memory so far?

Chris: I’ve had a lot of really cool experiences along the way getting to play with some amazing musicians. I was the guitar player in a band with Jonathan Scott from Resident Hero for a while and grew up with the singer Ryan White. I also toured a bit as guitar player for Stewart Mann and

the Statesboro Revue out of Austin. I’d have to say though, my favorite memory thus far is a recent one. Joshua and I were both taught drums by Nardo and I learned guitar from Larry Stanley. We had the opportunity to open for Mouse and the Traps for the New Years Eve party at Love and War in Lindale and man was it an experience! We got to open for the guys who taught us everything in a packed room. Too cool Johnny: Where can people get their Blacksmiths fix over the next couple of months?

Chris: Our next scheduled gig is March 31st at Club 155 on Frankston highway...at least for the public. We do a lot of private parties, bike rallies, and events as well. But always keep an eye out for us at XLN on 5th street...that’s our main stomping ground Johnny: What do The Blacksmiths have on the radar through the rest of the year?

Chris: We have a lot of new stuff planned for this year. A whole new set of songs, some killer merchandise and a new demo ep. Also, I’m told that you might see us opening for Mouse and the Traps again in the near future...so keep your eyes peeled Johnny: What can a new listener expect to see at a Blacksmiths show?

Chris: A good ole’ Rock show with lots of classic favorite tunes played by guys that do the best they can to respect and represent the music for what it is….life and love.

Meredith Crawford: Don’t Say She Won’t

By Johnny Griffith There have been plenty of reasons for Meredith Crawford to not be where she is right now. With the challenges and responsibilities that come with work, family, and just life in general, the fact she has time to sit down and write at all is a minor miracle some days. However, once you get to know Meredith, you realize it would be hard to keep her off stage if you tried and that writing music is not only a hobby but also good therapy for the soul.

Born in Chandler, Meredith graduated from Brownsboro High School back in 2008, and after a brief move to Missouri was back in East Texas by 2009 and has been here ever since. Though raising two children as a young mother took up some of her stage time, Crawford never stopped writing and now had even more material to draw from along the way.

Balance music with the non-stop responsibilities of adulthood, Meredith has managed to continue to

build her musical catalog while working and going piano in literally every Sunday School room. After to school, writing some amazing songs, and putting everyone would get done pairing up to play “Heart and Soul,” I would sit down and try to pick out on some great shows.

We got to visit this month and learn a little more melodies by ear, especially church hymns. I started about the singer/songwriter and see what makes her taking piano lessons when I was 12 and used that skill to play in my High School Youth band. Johnny: When did you realize you had a knack for songwriting?

Meredith: I don’t think I ever really truly felt that way about my writing until someone said, “Hey, that was a pretty good song. You write it?” Exposing my songwriting was like exposing my diary. But I loved to do it. If I created something I was really passionate about, then I’d be more willing to share.

Johnny: What do you typically draw from for material in your originals?

Meredith: A lot of my songwriting I draw from my own emotions or the emotions of others, but also the stories of others, particularly in East Texas. We never can fully understand the feelings of another person’s shoes, but I like to get as close as possible, and I feel like most songwriters are that way. Sometimes I can be inspired to write a song about a movie I watched, but really love to write about people and stories that cultivate in East Texas. Regardless of the subject material, the biggest booster for songwriting is allowing yourself to get emotionally involved, like in a relationship.

That’s the only way you’re going to get hurt, but in the context of songwriting, that’s the only way you’re going to make your listeners feel. You can’t just scratch the surface. You have to be emotionally explorative.

Johnny: What are some of the biggest challenges for a singer/songwriter in this area since many of the stages are dominated by full country or rock bands?

Meredith: When you’re a singer-songwriter, you’ve got yourself, your guitar, your heart and soul, and your lyrics, and that’s all you’ve got to capture the attention of the audience. The lack of sound I think gets to me the most. I hear drums and bass and guitar parts that could swim around the songs, but it’s just me and the guitar so I’m led to create a lot of musical content that makes up for that. There’s also the challenge of venues. It’s really important to get to know your venues and understand the crowds that flock to them; that way you’ll know if your sound is suited for that scene.

Johnny: How would you describe your sound at this point and how has that evolved over the years?

Meredith: This is one of the hardest questions to answer, but I will gladly do my best. I started out more country than a corn cob pipe, but I have evolved. I have always been heavily influenced by 60’s-70’s folk music, and I think those influences have the heaviest weight in my music. I don’t consider myself strictly country anymore, but I don’t think I’m strictly only rock or blues either. Honestly, I think there’s a little bit of something to serve every ear in my music and, quite frankly, I think that’s where a lot of artists are heading. I can tell you where it’s heading and where it’s loosely been, which is more in the realm of Folk/Americana.

Johnny: What do you have in the works?

Meredith: I’ve got a full-length album in the works coming up in 2018. Hopefully a music video, and working on getting a full band together.

I graduate college in the Fall of 2018 and once I’m done there, I plan on hitting the road a little.

Johnny: What experience do you hope a firsttime listener will leave one of your shows with?

Meredith: I hope it’s just enjoyable for them.

Whenever I leave shows, I mostly feel inspired.

Inspired to write a song, juice up my stage acts, try out a new lick, or the more expensive inspirations… buy new gear. If someone leaves a show feeling inspired, that’s the best feeling in the world for me.

This delightful new comedy by the author of “Cooking with Gus,” will open on stage March 9th-18th at Tyler Civic Theatre.

The story is about a woman who needs some ready cash right away because her apartment is about to be “condoed” - the hot new verb of the 80’s.

As she believes she is going to win the big lottery, she withdraws her life savings to buy tickets.

Meanwhile her husband, who left her three years before, arrives back home on her birthday, the day of the lottery drawing.

Cameron Carpenter is having a ball smashing the stereotypes of organists and organ music – all the while generating worldwide acclaim. His repertoire – from the complete works of J. S. Bach to film scores, his original works and hundreds of transcriptions and arrangements – is probably the most diverse of any organist. He regularly appears as a soloist with many of the world’s great orchestras and signed in 2013 an exclusive multi-album recording contract with Sony Classical. Cameron launched his International Touring Organ – a monumental digital organ of his own design, playable throughout the world – with two Lincoln Center concerts on March 9th, the release of the Sony album “If You Could Read My Mind” on March 3rd, and a 31-concert tour to Europe, the USA, and the UK. April 3rd-4th (9am), April 5th8th (Nightly at 7:30pm, Sunday at 2:30pm) - “Screwtape” Screwtape, a senior devil from hell, has delegated some authority to a junior fiend, Wormwood, whose assignment is to seize the soul of a very human and lovable young man.

This might be called a devilish dramatic contest with high-level meaning thrashed out in terms of brilliant low-level comedy. The rather charming Wormwood is being critically supervised in this, his first case, by that extraordinary devil, Screwtape. Advice from this old hand from hell is devastatingly perceptive of human foibles and, despite the love of a wonderful young girl, our young man is in terrible danger. It’s really a close decision and, in a dazzling resolution, the audience learns something important about hell, heaven, religion, and humanity.

My Life has Been a Tapestry

By Derrick White “My life has been a tapestry of rich and royal hue. An everlasting vision of the ever-changing view. A wondrous, woven magic in bits of blue and gold. A tapestry to feel and see, impossible to hold,” these lyrics come from American singer-songwriter Carole King’s song “Tapestry” from the album of the same name. It is one of the best-selling albums of all time. It received four Grammys in 1972, including album of the year. I mention this because when one first experiences the amazing artwork of local artist Jessica Sanders, it is so incredibly beautiful that you will actually feel the earth move under your feet.

If you would like to experience this visceral sensation for yourself, visit “Shape and Form,” a two woman exhibition featuring Cierra McGuckie and Jessica Sanders on view through May 31st at the Martin Walker Law Firm (121 N. Spring Ave., Downtown Tyler). The gallery space is the historic, former Arcadia Theater. Displayed are large-scale

female face oil paintings by Cierra McGuckie, and ceramic, porcelain, tapestry wall mounted sculptures by Jessica Sanders.

Cierra’s work creates a kind of psychological acumen with powerful, emotional intensity. They are visually entrancing and one’s mind begins to create narratives and starts to piece together genealogies while unable to look away from haunting stares.

Jessica’s sculptures are painstakingly assembled (or sewn) small, handcrafted, fired and glazed, geometrically shaped porcelain tiles. Her creations are hung on the wall and seem sinuous, soft, and organic. The undersized individual pieces transcend their uniqueness and become a complete form which is much greater than the sum of its parts. After you get over the initial fascination with the amount of labor devoted to creating each one of these pieces, you will start to see the immense exquisiteness of configuration and texture and a transformation of small and geometric into monumental and environmental. It is magical. It is truly a next level art experience.

This show is curated by local, visual arts juggernaut Dace Lucia Kidd. Also, if you really hurry, you can view Jessica’s work in a three person exhibition titled “Transitions” (works by Sanders, John Miranda, and Lisa Horlander) in the Fine Arts Complex Gallery at UTTyler, up through March 2nd.

“I love the intellectual side of art and the idea of the contemporary conversation going on. Art for me has been an exploration for truth, for beauty, and understanding. The fact there is always more for me to explore is really exciting.

The most unexpected things can be the most beautiful,” states Jessica Sanders. “My work is comprised of small ceramic pieces attached together to make a larger piece. The pieces are very flexible and often compared to fabric, this idea of taking something solid and hard and making it fluid is very intriguing to me,” affirms Sanders, adding, “I’ve dabbled in all kinds of media, painting, fibers, printmaking, mixed media, and sculpture. But right now I am focusing on ceramics. If someone had told me three years ago I would be working on a Master’s degree focusing on ceramics I would have laughed. When I was at TJC I was strictly a two dimensional artist.

Once I got to UTTyler, the only advanced studio

open was ceramics and the idea of taking advanced ceramics was terrifying! My first semester was pretty rough, I had no idea what I was doing, but in the last few weeks I found a pretty cool direction and ended up signing up for the next semester, and then the next. I’ve been interested in installation art for a while and have found ways to meld this with my ceramics, which has been a very exciting development for me.”

Jessica continues, “I come from a very artsy family. My mother was a drama and English teacher with a love of literature, so I grew up watching a lot of musicals and theater. I was exposed to things other kids my age weren’t seeing.

My Dad is also an artist. I was very influenced by him growing up. He is a great draftsman and does really nice work with colored pencil, but my favorite things are his sketchbooks. They are goofy and zany and I’ve always loved watching him draw up jokes. When my brother and I were younger, Dad would take us to zoos and we would sketch animals. I loved doing it so much and I was inspired by how good my dad and brother were.”

Jessica is also influenced by artists such as Sam Gilliam (color field painter and expressive abstractionist working on draped canvas adding sculptural, 3-D elements). “He creates beautiful drapes and folds with his un-stretched canvas and his color palettes are to die for! The Dallas Museum of Art has one of his works on view titled “leaf,” it’s a must see,” exclaims the artist.

“It just sort of happened, I had started a needlepoint tapestry a few months before we did the album, and I happened to write a song called ‘Tapestry,’ not even connecting the two up in my mind. I was just thinking about some other kind

A Time for Reminiscing

If you’re searching for something to believe in, this book will deliver. While this is not a book that you would normally find on a bestseller list, this is definitely a must-read. Ms. Stone, having reached her 60’s without landing on a spirituality that really “felt right” to her, had explored nearly every ideology and philosophy available to help give her that feel-good spiritual connectivity. Faced with an uncertain future due to several debilitating health issues, she became aware that a choice on her faith would have to be made. She came to the realization that “…the Christian faith was a story of unconditional love with God the Father; Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit….It did not say that suffering was a continuous condition…It spoke real truths to me about everlasting concepts and an eternity of love.”

Written in a very clean cut, easy to understand style, this book is a short read that can have longlasting effects on the reader’s life. It’s a book for anyone who is searching for their spiritual identity and is open to a refreshing new way of looking for and realizing just what their inner-most desires are for the rest of their life.

Not only is this a book that I would recommend to my fellow soul-searchers, but it truly is a heartfelt gift for Ms. Stone’s children and grandchildren. I am so thankful that she took the time to verbalize her search for her spiritual identity, as she passed away on January 16th of this year, in Conroe, Texas. I shall truly miss her frank and honest way of looking at life.
