in Tyler, outdoors is a destination for enthusiasts who want to bike, hike, and walk on local trails. The Tyler Parks and Recreation department and the Tyler Bicycle Club continue the “Ride the Four Pedals” initiative, encouraging all ages to ride, run, or walk all four of the designated trails and be a part of nature. The “Four Pedals of the Rose” is a series of four trails that stretch more than 33 miles and showcase both the city’s urban landscape and its natural beauty. Trails in Faulkner Park, Tyler State Park, the University of Texas at Tyler, and Lindsey Park attract locals and visitors alike. The 10-mile

Lindsey Park trail, designed by professional cyclist Nevada Thompson, was completed in 2013 as the newest addition to the network, and was developed as a joint project between the city and many volunteers. The four designated trails (Lindsey Park Trail, Faulkner Park Trail, The Tyler State Park Trail and the UT Tyler Trail) are designed for runners, walkers, and bicyclists of all ability levels, and each one is different. Beginners can ride parts of each trail and work their way up to the more challenging sections. Lindsey has more open spaces, and Faulkner has more twists and turns. Tyler State Park offers many challenging elevation changes and has been called one of the best trails in Texas. The UT Tyler trail is a shorter option but still offers a fun time. People who ride, run, or walk all four trails are encouraged to fill out a form online, and will receive a “I Rode the Four Pedals of the Rose” decal from Tyler’s Parks and Recreation Department proclaiming their accomplishment. Maps are available at parksandrec.cityoftyler. org/ParksSpecialProjects/Ridethe4PedalsoftheRose.

M6 Winery:

Celebrating Life & Good Things Written and Photographed by Barbara Greenbauer Take some time to wind down, breathe, and enjoy a superb glass of wine at M6 Winery & Tasting Room and Gift Shop in downtown Bullard. Owners Joe and Anne Moody set the pace as the charming and affable owners who greet you at the door and welcome you inside. The atmosphere is palatable the minute you arrive, inside the front door is a Texas trove of hand-made one of a kind wood pieces that can either house your own wine collection or accent it. Move along into the inner room and you will feel right at home as you order wine, food, and listen to live music. Joe Moody is in his element and passionate about his foray into the wine business. Relying on his business background and his interest in the wine-making industry, he has developed an inventory of his own, a grand selection of whites and reds that will be taste bud treats to either the wine connoisseur or novice. “Wine is about celebrating life and the good things,” explains Moody. “Anne and I have traveled from California to Italy and experienced multitudes of vineyards and tasting rooms. We were ready to bring all of our experiences to East Texas.” M6 derives its name from the Moody’s family of six, including the four grown children who were a piece of the business from its infancy. M6 Winery & Tasting Room is nestled on a corner of downtown Bullard, a piece of property Joe Moody has owned for over 20 years that has served as his office for both an oil/gas and real estate business over the years. “Creating a good wine is an act of love and patience,” explains Moody. “Grapes cannot be rushed and in the process, you have to be aware of what you are looking for in a flavor profile. It takes a lot of planning and preparation; blending is like art with different aromas, colors, and flavors.” The tasting room is an experience in itself, from the beautiful front and center bar fashioned from the ribs of wine barrels to the tin roof and rough cedar ceiling accents. Choose your wine and sit back while local musicians entertain. There’s another great space outside that the Moody’s affectionately call The Vinery, a vine-covered patio with plenty of room and great furniture to sit on while you enjoy the Texas weather. Your palette will applaud you when you sample an M6 original wine. White wines include the Blue Norther, an aromatic semi-sweet Riesling with hints of apples and stone fruit. The Bluebonnet is an off-dry white blend, perfect for poultry, fish, and pasta dishes. Or try the Sweet TexAnne, named for Mrs. Moody, with sweet honeysuckle and strawberry overtones. This wine is perfect for summer salads and cheeses and is sweet enough to serve as a light dessert wine. The Texas Viognier is an unoaked, medium to full-bodied dry wine, with notes of pears, honeysuckle, and tangerine. It pairs well with roasted poultry, orange chicken, seafood, apricots, fennel, capers, or pumpkin. M6’s Rosé wines include the Blushing Texan,

a semi-sweet Rosé wine blend with a light pink color. The appropriately monikered Tyler Rosé is a dry blend with a touch of High Plains Zinfandel. This blend was created especially for our local Tyler market and its famous association with roses. If red is more your thing, there are lots to choose from. Friendship Red is made with the hearty Ruby Cabernet grape. It is a great compliment to all things pasta, as it goes great with all sauces, from marinara to Alfredo. The Moodys very first Signature Blend is Vintner's Touch, a bold red blend that pairs well with roasted meats. This blend is made from grapes grown both in Texas and California. Red Texana is great with Texas BBQ or Tex-Mex dishes. It is full-bodied and made from the Ruby Cabernet grape. It has a spicy finish. Feel free to pair your wine with meat, cheese, or combo plates, olive oil with bread and spices, or a slider plate. Paired flights include a chocolate or cheese, and of course, you can do a Tasting Flight of five different wines and keep the signature M6 tasting glass. M6 wines range from an affordable $18 to $28 a bottle. Be part of the family and join the M6 Wine Club to experience the best of their offerings with five wine shipments annually. When it’s time to get your selections, M6 offers a complimentary glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres to members at pickup parties. M6 can host your private party and create personalized wine labels to commemorate any event from birthdays to anniversaries. Joe has nothing but compliments for the winegrowing community in East Texas saying, “We are all very supportive of each other and share resources and information.” Mark your calendars for the Piney Woods Wine Festival, May 11th-12th and join M6 and 18 other wineries on the trail for a spectacular weekend of music, art, and of course, lots of wine to taste. Lauren and Bobby Grounds from Tyler wanted a new destination and searched the internet for wine and live music and found M6. “We love this venue,” said Lauren. “It’s very different and fun, and the wine is fantastic.” They were trying the Blue Norther and the Blushing Texan with a cheese plate and Billy said “We will definitely be back. We like the atmosphere here. It’s very welcoming.” Joe is thrilled that M6 wines are featured at favorite Tyler restaurants including Rotolo’s, Dakota’s, and The Grove. “Mention that you would like to try an M6 wine and you won’t be disappointed,” he said. The Moodys welcome you to experience M6. “We want everyone who visits us to feel like they are our honored guest,” said Joe Moody. M6 is open Saturdays from 1-6:30pm and is located at 201 W. Main St., Bullard. They can be reached at (903)360-0369, by email at info@ m6winery.com, or on Facebook at M6Winery.

Music Blacktop Mojo: Burning Up The Roads By Johnny Griffith About a year and a half ago I sat down to interview Blacktop Mojo, a Jacksonville based hard rock band riding a wave of momentum after several successful years together and an upcoming album release. The end of that interview finished with this: “Blacktop Mojo can still be heard around East Texas on a regular basis, but I would definitely suggest checking out their website for more information and a sample of their music if you haven’t heard them. If it’s in your wheelhouse, get out and support a great local band that won’t be local for much longer at the rate their Mojo is working.” It turns out I was a little more prescient that I anticipated as Blacktop Mojo’s stock has only risen in the ensuing months. With a successful album release, ever increasingly distant tour stops, and mounting accolades from industry critics and magazines, local BTM shows are becoming harder to come by. In case you might not have heard of Blacktop Mojo, their sound can be described as “modern rock that got dragged through a puddle of southern rock and then dipped in a little bit of grunge.” The band was originally formed in 2012 and the lineup includes Matt James on vocals, Nathan Gillis on drums, Kenneth Irwin on rhythm guitar, Ryan Keifer on lead guitar, and Matt Curtis on bass. With a huge sound and chest shaking vocals, Blacktop Mojo brings a high energy rock show that leaves fans wanting more everywhere they go. While in the midst of rehearsals last month for their most recent tour that kicked off in San Antonio on April 20th, we caught up with them to see what had been going on for the past year and a half and what was on the radar for the rest of the year. Johnny: So it’s been about a year and a half since our last interview with you guys and the last time we talked there was an album in the works. When did “Burn The Ships” release and how was the process different from the first time around when you recorded “I am”? BTM: “Burn The Ships” released in March of 2017. The biggest difference between this record and our first record, “I Am,” was the amount of time we took for pre-production. On “I Am,” we spent about two weeks getting ready and arranging the songs before we went in to record it, where on “Burn The Ships,” we spent about eight months demoing and playing around with different ideas. Johnny: How has the reception been to the album so far and do you guys have your own personal favorite song from it? BTM: The reception to the album has been incredible this far. We’ve had countless positive reviews and feedback from publications all over the world. Also, our first single off of the album entitled “Where The Wind Blows" reached number 27 on the Billboard Active Rock chart last summer.

Jenn Ford, A Lifetime Journey

Johnny: Your bio says you’ve been “singing your entire life” so what was your earliest memory of being drawn to singing and making music? Jenn: It’s funny you ask that, my grandma called By Johnny Griffith me last week when the single dropped and she says One could make the argument local musician I’ve been singing my whole life. My parents would and vocalist Jenn Ford is one of the hardest working probably say the same thing. I remember standing women in the East Texas music scene. That’s not to next to my mom in church and listening to her take away from the other women who are out there intently because she always harmonized. I’m glad I busting it every day for their music and craft, but it grew up with that and I picked that up because of her. does illustrate just how much Jenn has had going Later on, I remember my mom, dad, brothers, and since moving back to East Texas after her service in sisters always telling me to be quiet. Grunge Rock. I realized I wanted something more out of life, and joining the military was my chance. Johnny: What was your first performance? Jenn: I think maybe when I played Cinderella (pre-fairy godmother) in kindergarten? My mom always says I acted real sassy. She swears that they made me the “ugly Cinderella” because I was too pretty. I roll my eyes at that. I was just glad to be on stage, and my mom is way more sassier than I ever could be. Johnny: You have a pretty broad spectrum of influences, and have performed in a pretty broad spectrum of projects over the years. Do you have a preference when it comes to sitting down and creating music or do you enjoy the flexibility of being more pragmatic? Jenn: I create whatever I think my audience will connect with while using true emotions that I’ve felt. It helps to have a degree in journalism. You learn how to connect ideas in a precise way. Or maybe being a musician helped me be a writer? I don’t know but music came first definitely. Johnny: You served in the U.S. Army and were selected to tour with several music assignments. How do you think your musical experience prior to service prepared you for those opportunities? Jenn: One, it exposed me to the most professional

and talented musicians in one organization where the sole purpose was to perform. We practiced daily, we had organization, we had people from all walks of life and cultures, so we did everything when it comes to music - jazz, classical, country, blues, rock, pop, patriotic, you name it. I spent 4 years in Germany learning Motown and blues basically, that is what the crowds wanted, and the general attitude was either ‘get some soul’ or get outta the way. I also learned to manipulate my voice from an opera singer when I was pregnant and unable to perform at all the shows. I signed up for 3 months of voice lessons from an American woman married to an Italian man, living and performing in Germany. She heard me at the first lesson and decided against teaching me classical music. She said she knew I could do it, but would never make it a career. The best advice I’ve ever gotten was from that woman. She said, “Sing how you speak.” That helped me relax into my true voice. Johnny: You were able to perform hundreds of shows, all over the world during your service time. What do you think you took from that experience that most prepared you to pursue your dream of a career in music? Jenn: Well, I don’t usually get afraid. I get anxious and excited, which is different to me. I try to prepare for days in advance, and when the lights come on, I just jump out there. It’s kind of like jumping off the high dive for me. Once you get over the height, it’s all downhill, right? I also think I learned the rhythm of a show day, like how many hours I need to warm up, get dressed, and get ready to be in my best performance mode. It helps me relax too because when something goes wrong. This attitude isn’t necessarily reflected in my daily life though. I’m pretty high strung and music actually calms me down. Johnny: Since moving back to East Texas you’ve been a busy woman, with some pretty wide-ranging projects, the latest of which is the recent release of your first single, “Baby Get Your Boots On” with Texas Country Records. How was that experience and were there any unexpected challenges in the recording process? Jenn: It is a totally unexpected and serendipitous thing, this whole experience. When I was signed, it was 2 weeks after I co-hosted the awards with Brandon Rhyder, and was basically just as unbelievable, especially after it started off as just a summer internship with Texas Country Music Association. I fast tracked my graduation because I felt like I needed to keep the momentum going. The only real obstacle is that we thought it would come out earlier, but my producer was moving into his new studio. I am so glad I waited for him to move. Johnny: Are your live shows primarily solo or do you have some with a full band? Jenn: For the last 2 years, I’ve been a solo acoustic artist, hiring musicians just to keep my name out there, while I look for the right band members. Now that we’ve narrowed the sound of the EP down, I have been able to form and woodshed all the music. Johnny: Are there any shows on the radar in May and June that are “can’t miss” events? Jenn: Oh yeah, lots of stuff coming up. But I am the most excited about opening up for Doug Supernaw in June at The Back Porch. He’s just such a legend and a good friend of my manager. Johnny: What is on the agenda for the rest of 2018 now that the single was released? Jenn: Well the full EP is almost done, I’ve got probably 10 more in the back of my mind, and I’m just focused on developing the band and getting us ready to tour Texas venues. I’m ok with being on the road and so is my family, it’s just logistics now. Like I need a touring van and stuff like that. Johnny: If you had to pick one memory from the journey so far...what would be the most memorable? Jenn: I think that it is when I get on stage - seeing people smiling and shaking their head. It makes me feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to do. The most memorable thing is when I sang in front of 1000 folks last year and got a standing ovation at the Texas Country Music Awards. I felt like, “Well, if I can pull that off, maybe I can do it again.” I guess we will see. Jenn Ford can be found at facebook.com/jennfordofficial or jennfordmusic.com.

Art

Inside the Artist’s Studio:

James R. Pace

Defining an East Texas Spirit By Derrick White “An institution is the lengthened shadow of one man” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. There are so many creative and talented artists in East Texas. I’m excited to see this genre of talent grow within our community; in terms of venues, pop-up shows, support and opportunities. There are many moving parts to our expanding East Texas visual arts scene including the Tyler Museum of Art, Downtown’s Gallery Main Street, Tyler Junior College, the University of Texas at Tyler, as well as local encouraging businesses like Strada Café, El Guapo Records, True Vine Brewing Company, and many more. However, there is one East Texan who is not just an artist but rather the bedrock institution of artistic voice coming from Tyler. I first encountered the work of James Robert Pace around 1991 while I was attending the University of North

This Month at Tyler Museum of Art:

Texas. His painting, “Lunatic Celebration,” was exhibited in a group show in the fine arts gallery. It stopped me dead in my tracks. It was amazing. The work visually achieved everything I aspired to be as an artist. I wrote a report about the painting and I did multiple renditions of the composition in my sketchbook. In later years, I curated an exhibition including the work of James Pace at the Art Corridor Gallery at Tarrant County Community College - Arlington. Today, I am privileged to call James Pace a colleague and a trusted friend. Pace’s work has evolved, experimented and changed over the years but it never fails to bring me to an ‘aha moment.’ His work immediately makes me realize, that the piece it is exactly how art should be; formed, composed, and constructed. James Pace’s influence on area artists would be hard to underestimate. Another artist friend and colleague, Paul Jones, worked with James Pace at UT Tyler while getting his undergraduate degree. The influence Pace carried through to Jones’ work was evident in his paintings long after the partnership ended. Take Jones for example: when you see James’ work, it is precisely what you want your own art to look like. James Pace has shaped and invigorated many devotees. James Pace is a Distinguished Professor of Visual Art at The University of Texas at Tyler where he has taught since 1985. He holds an MFA degree from Arizona State University and a BFA from the University of Oklahoma. Pace was appointed to the Oge’ Professorship in Visual Art, the White Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching, and received the Chancellor's Council Teaching Award. He has exhibited his work nationally and internationally since 1976 and has received numerous awards for his paintings, drawings, prints, and mixed media work. He maintains an active studio practice in the forest of East Texas, where he lives with his artist wife, Philana Oliphant, poet daughter Aza Rene’ Pace, and an ever changing number of rescued dogs. “Like most people who practice art making, I’ve done so for as long as I can remember. I’m sure most people find some kind of early support through family and friends, and thereby experience some type of self-actualization. I did, still do,” states the artist. Adding, “I grew up around university professors: historians, biologists, musicians, writers, and I was fortunate to have had intimate access to their

lives. I witnessed their discipline, their fascination with their subject and it was inseparable from their daily lives. They chased curiosity. Seeing the lifestyle they practiced, I had an early sense I would combine my interest in art with a university life. It was all I ever considered doing.” James Pace attended the University of Oklahoma School of Art, which during his matriculation he found to be a forward thinking, supremely funky, very diverse place. James remembers, “These people were freaks about making. It’s all we did, it’s all we talked about, and it’s all we spent what little money we had on.” Pursuing his MFA at Arizona State. Pace recalls loving the desert. “A friend and I spent many, many hours and days exploring the entire state. The environment had an indelible affect on both my work and my outlook. I came to believe in the importance of finding concepts through experience, getting lost, and with the help of others, finding my way back. The worst things can make the best things possible. This still happens to me today,” affirms the artist. “Trained in printmaking, painting, and drawing, I always thought those were my media interests. But, one day, while working on a large canvas on the floor of my studio, I inadvertently dropped a piece of paper on the painting. The experience brought a flood of memory of long forgotten understanding. I knew mixed media was my way of finding a full voice of aesthetic consideration,” states Pace. He concludes, “For the past 30 years it has been my greatest gift to work with Philana Oliphant. Her grace has been a wonder for me. You can see it in how she works, and in the results of those efforts. She is prolific, she is connected to the biggest ideas of connectedness, but mostly she has been a kind and loving partner. We have raised a daughter, who has taken the baton and continued to run faster than I could ever conceive. A recent MFA in poetry, now

a Ph.D. candidate in creative writing, Aza to this very day has taught me more than I can express.” “I believe, as artists, we are conduits to the zeitgeist. And frankly, this is our charge. If the culture permits us to do this, we should open up and let it out. Otherwise, we fail culture and ourselves,” declares James. Dedicated to the visual art spirit of East Texas and to seeing it prosper and grow as well as garner the statewide and national attention it deserves, he states, “Over the past several months, Philana and I have doubled the size of our shared studio. We are so very fortunate to have such a place to work. We realize we want to use this new studio for more than just ourselves. We hope this place may become a place for our community of artists and thinkers to congregate. We hope to facilitate a more cohesive, yet diverse arts community. This isn’t about our success, but helping in whatever ways we can, the next generation of artists.”

Books What’s on Your Reading List for Summer? By Gini Rainey “Little Fires Everywhere” by Celeste Ng

If you are interested in reading a book that has won nearly every award out there, then this is a must-read for you. Scheduled to be a series next season on Hulu, this page-turner follows the perfect-on-the-outside family as their life is shattered by a nomadic artist and her daughter who land in their neighborhood. Written by the same author of “Everything I Never Told You,” Ng doesn’t disappoint in the building of three-dimensional characters who can hold their own in the real world. With opposing family values creating social conflict after social conflict, this book is simply a book of contrasting human characteristics. While the topics of conflict were introduced gently, there is nothing gentle about the impact they had on both families. Although this book started out slow, it wasn’t long before it turned into a can’t-put-down pageturner. I found that I couldn’t read this book without feeling anger, sympathy, joy, worry, hope, and loss. “Little Fires Everywhere” might be a fast read, it is definitely an emotional roller coaster, so get ready for an excellent literary ride. It is a true account of Miller’s life that could not be told in any other way. From the author Stella Brooks, “His wife forewarned me that he had never discussed his life. He had given small morsels of information, but nothing more. But it was one of those small morsels that had me intrigued. I knew there had to be more to this man. Something was missing Expecting the same resistance, I knocked on his door. He must have felt instant trust because he spilled everything. Miller’s wife said ‘Stella, You have the magic key.
