Food Jacksonville’s Food Truck Court Written and Photographed by Barbara King By sheer grit and determination, Jacksonville native Emily Griffin has built a flourishing dream literally out of ashes. Charcoal Alley, in downtown Jacksonville, East Texas’s first mobile food truck park takes center stage where Griffin’s original photography studio once stood and is proudly becoming the area’s premier destination to eat, mingle, and relax. Griffin recalls the day she got the call in April 2013, “that my studio was up in flames and there was nothing we could do to restore it,” she recalls. “I was determined to make something positive out of it to take the rubble and recreate it into a space that is welcoming and fun.” The Saturday afternoon that I visited, the Alley was packed with folks eating, meeting, and relaxing. There are 18-foot umbrellas for shade and inclement weather, and plenty of comfortable wrought iron tables and picnic benches to spread out all your delicacies. The food trucks line the outside perimeter, with chalk board menus heralding a wide variety of tasty treats. This day’s food truck lineup includes Cheyenne’s Lunch Box, Rock “N” C, Sports Grill, The Mocha Moose, and Culinary Improv. The trucks come from places like Henderson, Tyler, Palestine, and Fort Worth to feed the flocks of people coming to see what it’s all about. The Jacksonville Fire Station is directly across the street, and the firemen take the opportunity to visit the Alley a few times a week. Ryan Chaffin, a 12-year veteran of the Department said, “We love the variety of foods and freshness and the convenience of the location.” Chaffin and his fellow firemen chose a cheeseburger with fries, but say they have tried everything from sandwiches to crawfish from the food trucks. I found the atmosphere at the park to be funky and laid-back. The clientele is a mix of everything from families with babies and strollers, leather-clad bikers, and dogs galore. “It is definitely a familyfriendly space,” said Griffin. “We pride ourselves on keeping the area clean, including two large bathrooms, and an outside sink to clean your hands after your crawfish experience.” The umbrellas are much needed during the day, but at night, the LED lights under them turn the space into a magical venue for live music and much more food. “We have had Jacksonville’s local restaurant Sadler’s do a full bar, and we plan on much more live music events coming up,” Griffin added. It’s pretty much a non-stop crowd for early morning coffee and

cinnamon rolls until the food is gone, which “could last anywhere from breakfast til after 7 at night,” explained Griffin. The trucks rotate, and offerings can be anything from catfish to turkey sandwiches with tomato and feta salad. This Saturday, folks are lining up for sandwiches from Cheyenne’s Lunch Box, including her famous chicken salad, pimento cheese, ham and cheese, and green herb turkey. Salads included a spectacular tomato and feta or cornbread, and a sampler of three heaping portions of salad and seasoned crackers. Owner Cheyenne Lindsey, said “We’ve only been doing the mobile food truck for a little bit, but we sell out of food almost every day. People are loving the Food Truck park experience.” Next to the Lunch Box sits the Mocha Moose, a crowd favorite, featuring hot and cold drinks and New Orleans famous shaved ice. Smoothies, frozen mochas, frozen caramel, and lots of coffee choices as well as waffle cones and brownie sundaes are always on the menu. Across the way on this Saturday sits the Culinary Improv which boasts reubens, grilled cheese, black bean and Angus burgers (the Fireman’s favorite), and pulled pork sandwiches. Crawfish are definitely in season right now, and folks were piling up on crawfish, potatoes, and corn from the Rock “N” C Sports Grill.

This food truck also serves catfish, brisket sandwiches, loaded potatoes, and crawfish etouffee. James Worley, from Jacksonville, enjoying a huge mound of crawfish said, “This Food Truck park is a great new idea for Jacksonville, and we like to come and show our support for the community. The food selection is great and there’s always something new.” Other food trucks participate and the line-up changes. They all have funky, fun names like “Cajun Café,” “GooRoos Pizza,” and “Ye Old Saucy Dog,” and so it’s a good idea to check www.facebook. com/charcoalalleyfoodtrucks to see which trucks are in the Alley and what’s available menu-wise. Special events and happenings, such as movie nights, chalk drawing contests, and more, are listed there too. Emily Griffin is gratified that the community is embracing her dream that came from the ashes. “I am so thrilled that we have rebuilt this one of a kind experience in downtown Jacksonville, my hometown,” she said. Come hungry and plan to stay for awhile at Charcoal Alley, located at 217 South Main Street in downtown Jacksonville. Charcoal Alley can be reached at (903)721-2766. Cash and debit cards are accepted at the food trucks on-site.

The Chardonnay Edition By Zairah Wooten Let’s just ask this one simple question. Who doesn’t like wine? Whether it be red, white, sweet, dry, or bubbly, one can always find their personal favorite. A semi-annual Tyler event, Sip in the City, combines the idea of raising money for charity, enjoying live and local music, while tasting a specific wine varietal into their event. This spring, Sip in the City focuses on the Chardonnay varietal and will be held on May 7th at Martin Walker Law Firm, 121 N. Spring St., downtown Tyler. Four charity organizations: Azleway Boys Ranch, East Texas Food Bank, Pets Fur People, and East Texas Symphony Orchestra, are given the opportunity to receive proceeds of the event. In addition, Tyler’s own Lauren Alexander will provide bluesy, folk-rock musical entertainment for attendees. I had the opportunity to chat with Paige Horn, Founder of Sip in the City, to discuss what Sip in the City is all about. Zairah: I’ve gathered that this is a fairly new event for Tyler. Can you brief us on how Sip in the City works? Paige: Sip in the City is a community wine tasting. Attendees register in teams of 1-3 people. Regardless of team size, they bring three identical bottles of the chosen varietal which is always a Red in the Fall and a White in the Spring. May 7th’s varietal is Chardonnay. Attendees hand

Zairah: I see that this is a charity event. Was there a procedure in deciding which charities would benefit? If not, why did you choose those organizations, and elaborate on how the winning charity will be chosen. Paige: I wanted to choose four charities that I was passionate about and that each served a unique purpose in the community. The impact of the four charities in our community is just astounding – in one room, we will gather to support children in crisis, to fight hunger, to protect animals, and to celebrate the art of music. The attendees have complete power in choosing the winning charity, as they vote on who they feel the proceeds should go to. Zairah: What is the difference between Sip in the City and Downtown Wine Swirl? Paige: Wine Swirl is the Heart of Tyler’s event – they feature area wineries and restaurants and it benefits the city’s initiative for downtown development. It pairs delicious food and wine and is such an excellent cause and serves a beautiful purpose. We wholeheartedly support their mission and look forward to attending every year. Sip in the City is more of an event that isn’t set in a specific location. We will move the event throughout the community each time, so people can look forward to drinking wine with us in some exciting spaces! Zairah: How many people do you anticipate? Paige: We anticipate around 200 people. Attendance will max out at what each space will comfortably accommodate. Zairah: I am a red wine drinker myself. How is it attracting wine connoisseurs this time around, as it is a Chardonnay varietal choice? Paige: Last time, the varietal was Merlot and I heard so many people say they couldn’t wait for the Chardonnay edition. Now we’re featuring Chardonnay

and I’ve heard people say they can’t wait for the Cabernet edition in the Fall this year. That’s the great thing about the event - everyone will experience their favorite! Zairah: How competitive are the people in this event with their wines? Paige: The competition is all in good fun and we have a great time exploring the different varieties. The focus of the event is giving back to the charities, the amazing space, the great food, the fantastic entertainment, and the merriment of the wine makes it a light-hearted, celebratory affair. Zairah: What are your goals in year three? Paige: To continue doing what we’re doing – giving back, and having a darn good time doing it. Celebrating charity, good wine (and sometimes some not-so-good), in our amazing city. We will have an exciting announcement coming up that will dial things up even more for the Fall event, so keep an eye at www.facebook.com/sipinthecity for more details. Zairah: Do you accept volunteers for this event? Paige: Absolutely! We have 200+ bottles of wine to uncork – we need all the help we can get. Zairah: Lastly, is there anything else you would like to add regarding Sip in the City? Paige: I’m just so grateful to be able to host this event in Tyler – the heart of the people here is amazing. They like to have fun, they like to support incredible organizations that give so much to the community - they love to celebrate their city. This event is a fantastic fit. To Do East Texas Comedy:

It’s No Joke!

By Johnny Griffith “Knock Knock” “Who’s There?” “Didja” “Didja Who?” “Didja know there is a growing comedy scene in East Texas and Tyler is ground zero for a bunch of funny business?” Okay that was bad. Okay that was really bad, but in all fairness, I’ve never claimed to be a comedic writer. Luckily, you won’t have to hear anything nearly that bad at any of the local comedy events going on in the next few months around town.

Comedy at Juls in Tyler

Juls has been a fixture in the Tyler entertainment scene for years, first as Julian’s, then after subsequent purchase by the Schulz family, the business grew and opened in a new space as Juls. With a unique atmosphere, outstanding food and drink choices, along with great live music, adding a comedy night was the next evolution in their continued growth according to General Manager and resident “beer suds whisperer” Jarrod Maness. “Back in October of 2015, we started bouncing around the idea of doing something along the lines of a Comedy Night. We used to have Card 53 do improv at Julian’s but I wanted more of a stand up scene for Juls, so I connected with Jamey Whitley and he connected me to Brandon Davidson,” says Maness. “Look, I love music, but comedy has always been something I’ve enjoyed watching, so I wanted to offer it to our patrons.” Apparently he was on to something because when asked how the first couple of shows went and how the reception had been so far Jarrod responded, “It’s been very well received! Customers have thanked me for offering stand-up comedy at Juls! We far surpassed my expectations. I honestly would of never of guessed that we would sell out our first two shows within a week of announcing them!” You may be surprised to hear that a venue in Tyler is willing to commit to a monthly night of stand-up comedy, especially considering how popular live music has been historically in this area. If you’re like me, you’ve probably assumed that you had to go to either Dallas, Houston, or Shreveport to see live comedy or just settle for late night binge sessions on Comedy Central. I was certainly surprised to hear that I could drive within thirty minutes of my house and hear local comedians live on stage, all while having a great meal, and cold beer. One person that isn’t surprised by the growth of the local comedy scene is Brandon Davidson. Davidson, a local comedian himself, was who Juls turned to when they were looking to start their comedy night. He is also one of the co-founders of Tyler’s own East Texas Comedy Festival as well being a mild mannered employee of a local non-profit by day. We recently caught up to Brandon for a little bit of background: Johnny: Give me the Cliff’s Notes on Brandon Davidson. Who is he, where did he come from, and how did he get here? Brandon: I’m father to two and a disappointment

to many. I’ve been married for 14 years to a very patient woman who is my best friend. I’m originally from Arkansas but now call Tyler home. I was a pastor for about a dozen years before I decided to step away from organized religion and I’ve been doing stand-up for nearly 5 years. Johnny: When did you first realize you had a knack for making people laugh? Brandon: Probably late elementary school. I was always the class clown, but not the kind that picked on kids. I had a rough childhood and laughter was something that could keep me out of trouble. I used it to my advantage at school to gain friends and make teachers like me. I figured if I could get the teacher to laugh, school could serve as a respite from home and it did. I was always pretty witty and enjoyed making people laugh, especially in the lunch room. Those remain some of my favorite “performance” memories. Johnny: What got you on stage for the first time doing stand-up? Brandon: I was 16 and signed up to do a talent show at a program for kids whose parents hadn’t attended college. There were about a thousand of us from across the state and some kids sang Boys II Men songs or played piano. I hadn’t prepared anything really but it was such a thrill to hold the microphone and make people laugh using short jokes that I probably ripped off from a late night monologue. There were genuine moments of crowd interaction and telling stories that went well. It was a long ten minutes for the adults though, and one of them came out to “relieve” me of the microphone to a chorus of “boos” from the audience. I remember thinking “hey, that was fun” but had no understanding of how to do it again. I didn’t try it again until I was almost 35 when a couple of my buddies thought it would be interesting to sign up for an open mic at a comedy club in Dallas. We finally got our chance at two in the morning in front of probably two people and it went about how you would expect, but I was hooked. It took a while to get paid work, but now that happens more regularly, which is nice. Johnny: Who were your early influences in the business? Brandon: As a kid, I loved Steve Martin and Adam Sandler. I know that is quite the dichotomy, but I enjoyed both. I also wore out a cassette of Ray Stevens that my grandma had. It was ridiculous, but I learned all the songs. If I close my eyes, I can imagine sitting in the guest bedroom and listening to “Mississippi Squirrel Revival” over and over. When I started performing as an adult a whole new world opened up to me. Pryor, Carlin, Hedberg, Hicks. Currently I enjoy John Mulany, Patton Oswalt, Louis CK, Maria Bamford, and Tom Segura. Johnny: Performing stand-up, you’re out there on an island and everyone in the room is staring at you, expecting you to say something funny. How much

The City of Tyler’s Liberty Hall jumped right in and we created “The East Texas Comedy Festival” and this year will be our fifth year.” When asked how the crowds have progressed over the past five years Payne added, “It has steadily grown. At first no one really knew what Liberty Hall was and it is hard to get a new venue started, much less to present a new genre to Tyler and East Texas. Our first audiences were probably 40-70 people and have grown tremendously.” Payne and Liberty Hall are hoping for a sellout this year. The Comedy Festival will run 5 nights this year. If you have children, this summer you might visit the newly renovated Bergfeld Park and the Children’s Park. Both parks have recently expanded their play areas. Throughout the summer, Tyler Parks and Recreation hosts free Movies in the Park at Bergfeld Park. Visiting the parks is not only family-friendly, but budget-friendly as well.

Go on an Extreme Adventure For the thrill seekers out there, try zip lining just outside of Tyler city limits. The Tyler area offers a couple of zip lining adventures: New York, Texas ZipLine and Adrenaline Rush Zip Line. Paul Ruark:

A Musician on the Move

The Ally Venable Band: Not Wasting Any Time

By Johnny Griffith It is often said that youth is wasted on the young, but don’t tell that to local up-and-coming blues guitarist Ally Venable. Barely 17 years old, Ally has been burning up the stages for several years now, playing gigs from Jefferson to Dallas, and everywhere in between. With powerful vocals and blistering guitar licks, Ally is a serious musician with serious chops and the stage presence of a seasoned entertainer beyond her years. These traits combine to take the audience on a bluesy journey through her set, which is a good mix of covers with several of Venable’s originals mixed in. With a solid group of musicians backing her up, The Ally Venable Band can hold their own with anybody and will keep you dancing in your seats, if you can manage to stay in them. Even though Ally has been performing in the area for several years now, there are certainly some out there who are just now coming across her, so we decided to catch up with her, and she was gracious enough to answer some questions for us: Johnny: When did you first start showing an interest in music? Ally: Early on in my life I always loved to sing, when I was younger I sang in the children’s choir at my church, and I think that is what started my love of music. When I was about 11 or 12, I started listening to blues music, and it just took off from there. Johnny: Was guitar your instrument of choice in the beginning? Ally: No, I actually experimented with the piano, and I also participated in my school’s orchestra for about 4 years playing the cello. Johnny: Who were your early influences musically? Ally: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Bonamassa, Beth Hart, Buddy Guy, Lance Lopez, Bonnie Raitt, and Walter Trout. Johnny: When and what was your first performance? Ally: MoJoe’s Coffee Shop in Henderson, Texas. It was an acoustic gig. Johnny: At what point did you realize you wanted to play the Blues? Ally: One day I just started listening to blues and really took an interest. My favorite channel on XM radio is BB King’s Bluesville. I listen to Tony Colter every day on my way to and from school. Johnny: When did you begin writing original music? Ally: When I was about 12-13 years old. When I write music I try to write about what goes on in my life, because everyone goes through the same struggles. I want people to know it’s okay to feel a certain way, and I also try to incorporate my influences into my own sound when writing, like Stevie Ray and Buddy Guy. Johnny: Who do you think has had the most impact on you musically? Ally: Other musicians, of course, and my dad. He really pushes me to do my best and is always there at every show. My band also inspires me, we are always coming up with new ideas and different things to try in shows.

Johnny: What is your current band lineup? Ally: Elijah Owings (drums), Zach Terry(Bass), and Bobby Wallace ( Guitar & Keys) Johnny: How hard has it been juggling school and music as you’ve become more successful? Ally: My teachers have been pretty cool about me leaving for shows. I just recently have been inducted into the National Honor Society at my school, which is a great achievement for me. I’m also in the top 10% of my class. Johnny: You’ve played the T-Bone Walker Blues Festival over in Longview for the last couple of years, and are on the schedule again this year. How has that experience been in terms of exposure, and networking with other musicians in the genre, several of which are legendary performers? Ally: I love playing festivals, they are always a good experience, and the T-Bone Walker Festival was really fun. I played a jam with Rick Derringer, Jonathon “Boogie” Long, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Trudy Lynn, and Steve Krase. That was a good time. Johnny: What are some of the lasting relationships that have come out of that festival? Ally: At that festival I made great relationships with different artists like Kingfish, Steve Krase, Trudy Lynn, etc. It’s crazy that I am able to travel and meet all these great people because I play guitar. I thank God every day for my gift because it is truly a blessing. I don’t know what I would do without it. Johnny: You’ve earned numerous accolades in your young career, can you give us some of the highlights of those and do any stand out as more meaningful to you personally? Ally: 2nd Place at the 2015 - 10 under 20 Dallas Guitar Show, ETX 2015 Blues Band of the year, ETX 2015 Female Guitarist of the year Johnny: You recently had a birthday bash at The Back Porch in Kilgore that had a pretty great lineup with your band, Salvation From Sundown, and the Lance Lopez Band. What’s it like to have that kind of talent willing to come out and support you? Ally: It’s awesome to have other musicians and bands support you through your musical journey. It means a great deal to have that kind of support system behind you. Johnny: What has been your favorite memory thus far in your career?

Ally: My favorite memory in regards to my music career is when I had the honor of meeting Gary Hoey at the Dallas Guitar Show. He was reviewing his Fishman pickups at one of the booths there, and had seen me and let me play his guitar. Aside from how great of a guitar player he is, he is also a true and genuine person, and to me that is what made that experience all the worthwhile. Johnny: You guys have several great venues and festivals booked over the next few months. What else is on the horizon for you? Ally: We will be coming out with a new album in June - Title Track “Too Much Too Soon.” Rock Romano and Steve Krase are Co-Producing it. I’m very excited for it to come out. Johnny: For the guitarists out there, what’s your current rig consist of? Ally: My amp right now is a Mesa Boogie F50 1x12 combo and my guitar is a Fender American Standard Stratocaster, rosewood- sienna sunburst solid body electric with an ash body, maple neck , and three custom shop single-coil pickups. For my pedal board I’ve got a Dunlop Crybaby 535Q Multi- Wah, Ibanez Jemini, Ibanez Tube Screamer, Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face, Mooer Ana Echo Analog Delay, Strymon Lex Rotary, MXR Phase 90, and a Boss Chromatic Tuner. Johnny: When someone comes to see The Ally Venable Band for the first time, what do you want them to walk away thinking? Ally: When people come hear me the first time, I want them to be blown away. I want them to walk away thinking, “Now that’s a guitar player.” I want them to know it’s okay to feel a certain way, for them to forget their worries and to just have a good time. Be sure to check out The Ally Venable Band at a local venue near you for a good look at the future of Blues and Rock for many years to come. Upcoming Shows: • May 13: Moore’s Store, Ben Wheeler Texas, 8pm • May 14: Lone Star Icehouse, Longview Texas, 9pm • May 21: Porch Fest 2016 @ The Back Porch, Kilgore Texas, 12 noon • May 28: Mudbug Madness Festival, Shreveport La, 4pm On The Web: • www.allyvenableband.com • www.facebook.com/allyvenableband

By Barbara King Friday nights are great for live music at the Potpourri House in Tyler, and up and comer “Rusty” Paul Ruark is packing them in. Musician and writer Paul Ruark plays from his soul every Friday night at the restaurant from 6:309pm and brings years of experience and talent to the stage. The Potpourri House, a Tyler staple for over 34 years, is home to extraordinary food and great live music. Ruark, at 22, has been playing since the young age of 15, and plays eight instruments including, mandolin, viola, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, harmonica, and banjo. Self-taught, he brings a lively mix of everything from country-twang to Elvis to his repertoire. “I have been passionate about music for a long time and love the old school stuff too, like James Taylor and Chuck Berry,” said Ruark. “If you come out to hear me, you will get a lot of original songs too; a set contains a lot of different styles.” He has the confidence of a performer much older and wiser than his years, and is likened to Garth Brooks or Hunter Hayes, with country roots. He has performed all over the US and recorded in Nashville with famed guitar player and recording artist Chris Rodriguez, who has played for superstars like Keith Urban and Brad Paisley. He has also recorded with nationally recognized musicians Milo Deering, Krista Branch, and Chris Rodriguez. Folks are up on their feet, dancing in front of the singer as he continues to weave his stories through song. Ruark is a man on a music mission, saying “When I graduate from UT Tyler in May, the wheels will really start turning, and the engine will be on for me to perform and write more.” He is concentrating on earning his degree in Marketing with an emphasis on Customer Service and Sales. Some of Ruark’s tunes on reverbnation include “Keep Your Change,” “Tongue-tied,” “Farmer’s Daughter” and “Sincerely, Clark (Man of Steel).” He has a very laid-back, low key style that is confident, strong, and extremely lyrical. Les Ellsworth, owner of Potpourri House, has a special reason to be proud of the aspiring young singer. “Paul is married to my daughter, Autumn, and has led music in church as a youth minister, as well as travelled to Washington for the National Day of Prayer,” Ellsworth said. “I led the first worship 150 years in the US Capitol for the United States Congress, which was such an honor and a blessing,” Ruark added. He was also told it was the first time a country artist had performed in the National Statuary Hall in the Capitol. Ruark has four published songs that can be found on “iTunes” and “Spotify” as well as “YouTube.” The native Texan has played all over East Texas and said, “My heart is here in Texas, and it’s where I want to stay and play. I see a huge change in live music here, and I think there are lots of great opportunities for artists to perform in the area.” Ruark also has a worship EP entitled, “Collide” which is available online. “Joy unspeakable! Faith unsinkable! Love Unstoppable! Anything is possible!” Hearing Casting Crowns’ frontman Mark Hall singing those words in the title track of the band’s new album “Thrive,” it’s hard not to feel peace wash over your soul. Life can be so challenging, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed. What a gift to be reminded we were made to thrive! “The idea of ‘Thrive’ came out of our student ministry. I’ve been a youth pastor for almost 22 years, and it’s still what I want to be when I grow up,” Hall says with a grin. “The songs always really start out with what we’re teaching, and for years I’ve been using Psalm 1 in showing them what a believer looks like. It says: ‘Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season.’” Tickets start at $27. Belcher Performance Center at LeTourneau University is located at 2100 S. Seeking Student Guitar Contestants The 11th annual

T-Bone Walker Blues Fest will include the contest for student age guitar players, the T-Bone Walker Junior Showcase, that the festival inaugurated at the 2015 event. “We are looking for student age guitar players who will compete in the professional surroundings provided by the festival,” said Junior Showcase chairperson Andrea Baros. All students in Grades 3-12 are eligible for entry. Contestants will compete in one of three age groups, with festival staff selecting finalists from all submitted video entries. Finalists will perform beginning at 10am on Saturday June 4th on the Patterson Nissan Junior Showcase stage at the Maude Cobb Activity Complex. Admission to the Junior Showcase performances is free to the public. Students may enter the contest by submitting a performance video. Complete contest rules and entry instructions are available on the festival website at www.tbonewalkerbluesfest.com/t-bonewalker-jr-showcase. Deadline for entry is May 13th. The winners in each of three categories will be recognized in an awards ceremony and will later perform on the T-Bone Festival stage with a T-Bone Walker performing artist. The 2016 T-Bone Walker Junior Showcase is made possible by the sponsorship of Patterson-Nissan.

Art Inside the Artist’s Studio:

Steampunk - Amanda Hatfield “I don’t know, but I been told, a squid headed

woman ain’t got no soul.” By Derrick White Wikipedia.com defines Steampunk as “a science fiction, or fantasy, subgenre incorporating technology and aesthetic design inspired by 19th century industrial steam-powered machinery. Steampunk is often set in an alternative history of the British Victorian era or American Wild West, in a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has maintained mainstream usage. Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic machineries or retro-futuristic inventions and fictional technologies like those found in the literary works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne.” In other words, in a science fiction fantasy world anything can happen. Thus enter the creative world, imagination, and talented skill of local artist Amanda Hatfield. Her exquisite renderings of figures inspire interpretations of futuristic, fantastic, beautiful, and perhaps artificially intelligent beings. Read on Space Cadets! Amanda earned an Associate’s degree in Fine Art at Tyler Junior College where she was selected as a Performance Grant Scholarship Showcase Student. While enrolled at TJC she participated in the study abroad program at the Santa Reparata School of Art in Florence, Italy, spending a summer month touring Italian museums and churches, spending time in the art studio, and visiting Rome. Amanda now works as an artist and freelance graphic designer, as well as a painting and drawing instructor at Michaels on South Broadway in Tyler. Her artwork can be seen in exhibitions throughout the area. She exhibited in the 2013 Student International Small Print Show in Cairo, Egypt. While attending Tyler Junior College her art was accepted and published in three consecutive annual TJC Bell Tower Arts Journals. In an alternative history, she most definitely is a steampunk aviator/artist with goggles and durable boots. She would have either a battle-hardened appearance, or a roguish one, depending on her inclinations, and she would be armed against airship bandits. Amanda Hatfield is a skillful artist with a remarkable ability for depicting the human form. Though she is somewhat reserved and quiet in person, her artwork is bold and demands viewers’ attention. Amanda works in a variety of different materials including acrylic paint, oils, charcoal, printmaking, and clay. “I have this terrible habit where I find and play in a new media, figure out how to use it well enough, obsess over it, and then leave it for a long time. Overall, I mostly work with acrylic paint for its ease of use and how inexpensive it is. If I had the space and materials, I would probably sculpt more,” states the artist. When asked why she became an artist, like most, Amanda cites an early encouragement, stating, “It is hard to pinpoint any one moment. It was a culmination of my mother always being supportive when I would participate in school art events and people talking to me because they saw me doodling when I should have been paying attention in class. I always liked coloring when I was little and when I would watch cartoons, I would draw the characters on notebook paper. As I grew older, I wanted to have my own characters, so I would create them over and over in an attempt to bring them to life. Seeing the stories and people I could create on canvas or a piece of paper certainly drove home the fact I wanted to be an artist.” The importance art has brought into Amanda’s life beyond 20 • EGuideMagazine.com

Family “Bodies Human: Anatomy in Motion”

Discovery Science Place April 30th-September 4th The Discovery Science Place is excited to open its latest exhibit, “Bodies Human.” Humans are unique and complex machines which have the ability to move, think, manipulate objects, build and repair themselves, grow and even reproduce to make more human machines. But as amazing and resilient as our bodies are, if our machine parts, even just one, do not work to their potential, our human existence is at stake. This exhibit will help you understand the parts that make up your machine and how these structures work together to keep you alive. You will learn about what comprises your body, as well as how these structures operate. In the end, we hope you learn to appreciate the astounding human body. “Bodies Human” is a unique exhibit which displays over 100 authentic human specimens, including whole bodies, individual organs and transparent slices preserved through a special process called plastination. It provides viewers with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to look inside the human body, and to see and understand our own anatomy and physiology. This will provide a new appreciation and respect for the human body and what it means to be human. It’s an inside look at the human body and is designed to show how the choices we make affect our overall health. The bodies are positioned ‘in motion’ – allowing you to see the body as it would be in real life situations. A few common questions are: What is Plastination? The human specimens were obtained from a U.S. supplier to the medical community who works with a plastination laboratory in Taiwan, where the bodies are prepared for educational and scientific purposes. It is a technique that halts decomposition and preserves anatomical specimens for scientific and medical education. The process extracts bodily fluids and replaces them with reactive plastics. Why are the bodies posed the way they are? By positioning the bodies “in motion,” it allows the visitor to relate the body to real life situations, therefore providing an educational appeal. They are positioned based on anatomical systems. Is “Bodies Human” an appropriate exhibit for children? Nearly 20 million people, including young children, have viewed similar exhibitions around the world. It is important to note that the exhibit includes full-body plastinates with exposed genitals. We recommend the exhibit for school groups in grades 6 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by responsible adults during their visit. The decision to view the exhibit is left to the discretion of the parent. Why did the Discovery Science Place bring this exhibit to Tyler? The DSP has made a commitment to bring exciting, educational science exhibits to East Texas. It is our mission to ignite curiosity in young minds (of all ages) and we feel East Texans should not have to travel to larger cities to see such an exhibit. Will I be able to touch any of the exhibits? While you will be able to get very close to the plastinates, visitors are not allowed to touch them.

Admission & More Info This exhibit requires a separate admission fee from the regular museum admission. Tickets can be purchased at Discovery Science Place front desk. Tickets are Adults (13 years and older) $8, Children (5-12 years) $6. Academic Group Rate is available for $7 by calling (903)533-8011. Exhibition hours are Tuesday-Saturday: 10am-5pm, and Sunday: 1-5pm. Discovery Science Place is located in downtown Tyler at 308 N. Broadway, www.discoveryscienceplace.org/ bodies-human-anatomy-in-motion.
