Republic Icehouse: Enjoy the Patio With An Ice Cold Beverage in Hand

By Barbara King Mention The Potpourri House and both locals and out-of-towners know it as the destination boutique and restaurant where you can dine and shop, boasting the best salad bar in East Texas. It’s an eclectic mix of jewelry to purses, candles to lamps, with a warm, welcoming patio-like dining feel where you can enjoy a fantastic meal.

Behind every great dining experience, there is a kitchen where the culinary magic begins.

And at the helm is Cody Baschnagel, the tall, smiling presence in the frenetic activity where your meal is made at The Potpourri House.

A relative newcomer on The Potpourri House scene, he has been the executive chef for eight months, and it is clear to see he’s the head of the 13 person team getting the meals prepared and ready to serve.

Trained at Le Cordon Bleu, the famous French culinary and hospitality school, Baschnagel admits that cooking “is truly my passion, and it’s just a lot of fun tweaking recipes and being creative with food.” With a 60-hour work week that includes purchasing produce, meats, and vegetables, managing staff, and prepping meals starting at 8am, it’s a consuming job being an executive chef.

He says that The Potpourri House menu is an eclectic mix of American/Italian dishes, including standard favorites like Chicken Lou Al (breaded chicken breast or fried shrimp on penne pasta, topped with white wine cream sauce) or the fish-lovers Tilapia Veracruz (grilled tilapia filet on rice pilaf with mangotomato relish). Start off your dining adventure with an appetizer, including your choice of spinach artichoke dip, Thai egg rolls, or spicy boneless buffalo wings.

Baschnagel says his favorite dish to prepare is the standing pork roast, served with chipotle sauce. He is proud of their hand-cut, aged steaks, and that their pasta sauces and soups are all made from scratch. Today, the kitchen is buzzing while Baschnagel preps a gluten-free favorite, sesame tortilla-encrusted chicken. Other glutenfree items are creamy pepper jack chicken or salmon served over gluten-free corn pasta.

The restaurant proudly serves 1855 Premium beef, always prepared to your liking. Beef

is supreme, with New York strip, Rib Eye, Filet Mignon, and twin tenderloin medallions as dining options. Chicken fare includes charbroiled marinated chicken, chicken almondine, and honey mustard, cashew-encrusted chicken.

The soup and salad bar is home to fresh fruit and salads and some of the best homemade soups “this side of the Red River,” and of course spuds with all the fixings. Burgers and sandwiches are big hits too, with a hot French dip, The Majestic (ciabatta bread loaded with ham, turkey, avocado, bacon, tomato, and alfalfa sprouts), or cold chicken salad, fresh smoked turkey, or pimento cheese. You can build your own burger with all kinds of cheeses, mushrooms, and bacon to add to the mix.

Lunch is a treat in itself, with menu items including chicken almond crepes, smoked Italian meatballs and penne, and always a favorite, southern fried fish.

It’s a family affair at the Potpourri House, where kids up to age 12 eat free every Monday and Tuesday night. Kids can pick their favorites from corn dogs, grilled cheese, burger, soup and salad bar, or chicken strips.

Don’t forget about dessert at the restaurant with mouth-watering options like chocolate marquise (chocolate ganache, rum-soaked genoise cake with roasted hazelnuts), glutenfree petite crème brulee, coconut royal cake, deep dish apple pie, turtle fudge cheesecake, or a decadent chocolate fudge nut brownie.

With such beautiful days of seemingly endless sun, it’s a shame to sit inside anywhere in Tyler. Republic Icehouse, located at 3807 University Blvd. in Tyler, is a great place to hang out on the patio this spring, offering both shaded options for large groups and intimate areas for just the two of you.

Inside, Republic Icehouse has a large horseshoe bar connecting you via huge garage doors to a nice outdoor stone-paved patio that surrounds the front areas. Enjoy late sunny afternoons at picnic tables under umbrellas, as well as the long daylight savings hours that are ideal for happy hour and early evening drinking al fresco.

The ambiance here is “Industrial meets Country” and Republic offers a good place for a family meal, date night, or to just hang out with friends.

Burger Warehouse will soon open in Green Acres Shopping Center in Tyler. This new restaurant will be next door to Sherman Williams and Uptown Vapor.

In-N-Out-Burger will be opening a restaurant in The Village at Cumberland Park. “The company purchased and closed on about 1-acre at the corner of Centennial Parkway and Broadway Ave.,” said Matt Wilson of The Retail Connection, which operates The Village at Cumberland Park. In-N-Out-Burger specializes in hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and its double-double burgers.

Taco Cabana will be opening a restaurant in The Village at Cumberland Park shopping center this fall. Tyler residents previously enjoyed having a nearby Taco Cabana, which operated in the current T.G.I. Fridays location for about two years in the late 1990’s. The location closed in 1997.

False alarm - Burger Grind is reopening in Tanglewood Shopping Center in east Tyler.

They will be reopening in mid-May. Wienerland is reopening in the original location on 5th St. in Tyler. Wienerland has been a staple of the Tyler landscape for 45 years.

Tyler mourned the loss of this iconic hot dog stand. Long time Tylerites Ashley Feldman, Lindsey Harrison, and families could not see this great stand disappear into the past of Tyler.

Every Second Saturday, May 13th, Downtown Tyler is the Place to Be!

By Holli Fourniquet The next “Hit the Bricks” is May 13th, 2pm-12 midnight in Downtown Tyler.

On the second Saturday of every month, people from all over will converge in Downtown Tyler for a new event called “Hit the Bricks.” Downtown Tyler will be bursting with family fun, entertainment, music, food, history tours, art, and, of course, the chance to check out a great, locally-owned restaurant, bar, or retail establishment.

Visit Tyler, the City of Tyler, and Downtown businesses, organizations, and enthusiasts are all coming together to organize activities for the entire family the second Saturday of every month. “Hit the Bricks” will offer a chance for the community to come together in the heart of the city.

Special activities on May 13th include: Ruthie Foster will be live in concert at Liberty Hall at 8pm with Ramoth-Gilead as the opener. Tickets are $15-$30 or $200 for VIP Box Seats (admits 4 people). The last time Ruthie Foster was in Tyler, it was a sell out show, so make sure to get your tickets early!

Historic Preservation is “Larger than Life on the Square.” Have fun with the whole family playing Jumbo Playing Cards, Jumbo Dominoes, Giant Kerplunk, Giant Jenga, and more.

ETX Brewing Co. will offer brewery tours at 2pm, 3pm, and 4pm (limited to the first 25 people per tour); $1 off pints until 6pm, a food truck, and live entertainment 8-10pm.

An Art Show, 11.1, will be at Martin Walker, P.C., 6-8pm. Enjoy an art exhibit by local artist Dace Lucia Kidd – a contemporary artist. Primarily a painter, she works with traditional and contemporary compositions.

Rock ‘n Roll Saturdays

Held monthly, Rock ‘n Roll Saturdays are fun for the entire family. Performances are May 20th, June 17th, and July 15th. “Rock on Demand” fills the entire 40-foot domed theater with vibrant graphics, completely enveloping visitors in a 360-degree view while the 16,000-watt, digital surround sound system plays rock hits ranging from the Beatles and Rolling Stones to The Doors and Aerosmith.

A Star Party Saturday

Ongoing the first Saturday of each month starting May 6th (8pm, 8:30pm, and 9pm), you can see a Star Party in a live presentation

in CESSE’s 40-foot planetarium dome. Learn all about the stars, the planets, and the constellations as you take a tour of the night sky and travel to distant planets and beyond. Piney Woods Wine Festival May 12th-13th The Piney Woods Wine Festival will be held in Lindale, Texas for the second year at Picker's

Pavilion, 205 E. North St. The event features wine tastings by the 19 wineries that make up the Piney Woods Wine Trail, many of them national award winners. It all begins Friday, May 12th, 5-9pm and Saturday, May 13th, 11am-7pm.

Artisans geared for the wine enthusiast will have their booths set up at the Festival. Uncork the fun with musical entertainment, great food, and of course, wine! This festival will be offering samples of wine for $1 each, glasses of wine for $5 each, as well as selling bottles of wine. There will also be food and music inside the Pavilion.

Entry into the Picker's Pavilion is $10. You will receive one wine glass and a six bottle carrier tote bag.

People under the age of 21 may enter the Pavilion for $5 admission.

The festival will be followed by a concert hosted by Love & War in Texas for a separate ticket price that can be purchased by going to outhousetickets.com. Good Things Come To Those Who Wait

By Johnny Griffith We live in a culture that’s more and more obsessed with instant gratification while less interested in waiting for anything. Whether it be binge watching entire seasons of your favorite show, ordering your coffee ahead of time, or starting a job expecting a corner office, we want what we want, and we want it right now!

There is a local rising pop musician, however, who is going against the flow and taking her time with her music career. Born and raised in Tyler, Heather Harper is a 2007 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School who has music in her blood, yet is only recently getting her career off the ground. Heather got her first guitar around age 7 and learned to play by ear while listening to her family members perform. A natural talent, Heather would frequently sing the national anthem at games and create self-made CD’s to give out to her friends and teachers “just in case she became famous someday.” Well, that day might be just around the corner as Heather just released her first single back in February and seems to be poised for success.

She sat down with us recently to tell us a little bit more about herself: Johnny: Your interest in music began at an early age. What was your motivation to start playing music in the first place?

Heather: I first picked up music at just 3 years old. One night my mom heard a noise coming from the bathroom and heard singing, and my mom thought it was coming from a doll, but when she looked in it was me singing.

It was a part from the movie “Little Mermaid” from the scene when Ariel got her voice back.

She couldn’t believe such high notes were coming from such a little girl like me and the fact that I was able to hit those notes. I believe that was the first time my mom knew I could sing and ever since, I haven't stopped singing. It was my mom who inspired me the most to get into music. Growing up I used to watch her perform around locally for church and community events. She even got an opportunity in Nashville one year. Eventually I got to join in with her at events starting when I was about age 10, and it was at that moment I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

Johnny: When and where was the first event you performed at publicly?

Heather: Well, I first started performing in church, and my first big event was at the Chandler City Hall when I was just 11 years old in 2000. I remember I was dressed up really western and sang "Daddy's Hands" and "Love Can Build a Bridge," and then mom and I sang "Grandpa" together.

Johnny: Who were some of the early musical influences that shaped your style?

Heather: Growing up, my musical influences at the time were Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, The Backstreet Boys, Shania Twain, Alanis Morissette, and many more. And even in today’s music, such as Taylor Swift and Tove Lo, have a lot to do with my musical influences and the shaping of my signature style/sound.

Johnny: When did you begin writing your own music?

Heather: I first started writing songs when I was in middle school. It started with me writing poems first then turning them into songs.

But now when songs come to me, they first start with a melody in my head, then I put lyrics with it. A lot of my songs are written truth about my life or others’ lives and even sometimes I may just write about something fun. Sometimes it takes me anywhere from 10 minutes to weeks to write a song. I write whatever comes to me.

Just because I am a pop singer doesn’t mean I am a pop songwriter. When I write my music I don’t like to label myself a certain genre during writing time. I figure out later what genre the song would fit with. I have written many songs, anywhere from country to christian to pop, etc..

Johnny: In an area where Country and Rock are so prevalent, how did you gravitate toward

pop music as your style of preference?

Heather: I grew up around mostly gospel, bluegrass, and country music because that’s what my family mostly played. And that’s what motivated me to want to be different, to just “do” something different. I didn’t want to be like everyone else. And my parents were definitely supportive of the idea.

Johnny: Has that presented any challenges finding local gigs?

Heather: Well sure, but you just have to keep putting your foot down. I believe I am already making a difference. For example, I have been booked at Clicks, which has been known for being a rock music venue. I have already been playing here locally in the East Texas area and will continue to do so wherever I can.

Johnny: How integral has family been in your success?

Heather: My family is 100 percent supportive of my music career. They have all been there since day one and continue to be there for me every step. My family is what also helps me get through any challenges in my career.

Johnny: You recently released a single, “Moonlight.” How has the response to that been so far and how was the process of recording for you?

Heather: “Moonlight” has so far been a great success in my book, for example, in less than one month it received over 7,000 listens on Spotify. It took me about a month to record it in the studio, which was at Studio 333 with Chad of Mauldin Productions. The recording process went very smoothly. I don’t think I could have picked a better person than Chad to work with.

I was amazed at how quickly he picked up my songs and knew exactly how I wanted them to sound. I also just got through last month in March shooting my music video, which is expected to be released sometime in May 2017.

And I already have my next single “Emotions” ready, which just released a few days ago.

Johnny: Okay, so it’s been 10 years since you graduated from Robert E. Lee, which is almost a lifetime in the music business. You settled down, married your high school sweetheart, and started a wonderful family, but do you have thoughts that maybe you waited too long to get in the game?

Heather: I always get asked this question, why go for it now? And why are you just now recording and releasing songs you have written years ago? My answer is, to be honest I am glad I didn’t go for it 10 years ago knowing what I know now about the music industry. I feel back then I wasn’t truly prepared and ready. I was offered many opportunities back then, but my mom and dad would both tell me it’s not the right time yet, and I am glad I listened to them.

But, it’s about having patience, timing, educating yourself, your fans, not giving up, and most importantly trusting in God because he knows your future.

Johnny: What are you most proud of in your career so far?

Heather: What I am most proud of in my career so far is finally getting my songs recorded and released and also the thrill of performing for others. Music is not what I do, it’s who I am, and to finally be able to express myself in my own music is an awesome feeling.

Edwin Holt & The Red Clay Roadhouse Band:

Still Feeling Blue After All These Years

By Johnny Griffith Edwin Holt caught a mad case of the blues about 30 years ago, and it hasn’t let go yet.

The East Texas native was a graduate of West Rusk where he spent most of his time around the band hall when he wasn’t at home listening to his father’s collection of 45’s to the tune of Sam Cooke, Little Milton, and the like.

After high school, Holt sought to spread his wings and ended up at The University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. Here, he was exposed to music in a way he never had been before. Eventually finding his way to Dallas, Edwin would make his mark on the Blues Scene over the next several years playing with established acts.

After earning the respect of his peers through years of gigs, Holt was eventually asked to take over Johnnie Winters’ backing band after his death. Eventually Holt stepped away from touring to spend more time with family and focus more on his design firm right here in Tyler.

Fast forward to present day and Holt once again finds himself at the helm of a new group, The Red Clay Roadhouse, and this time the sound is probably the most unique blend he’s every been a part of. We caught up to the blues man recently to get to know him better and get the scoop on his latest project.

Johnny: You've been in music for a long time, at last count I've got you more than 30 years in the business, but let’s go back to the beginning. When did you first get the itch for music?

Edwin: The big “aha” moment for me was when two guys from Greenville, Mississippi would take me to see James Son Thomas perform in Oxford. James was the real deal, which would then turn into an introduction to the Mississippi Delta Blues Festival, an event that I attended for 13 years in a row and would finally headline three years in a row later on in life.

Johnny: East Texas has a deep, rich, musical history, but the blues has often taken a backseat to other genres. Mississippi, on the other hand, has the ghosts of blues legends around every corner. What was it that drew you into the blues when you went to Ole Miss and then later when you came back to TCU? Edwin: I couldn’t get out of the music scene long enough to actually attend class, which dented my grades. Frustrated with my lack of academic progress, my parents would pull me out of Oxford (Mississippi) and place me at Kilgore Junior College until I could get my grades up to attend TCU, but Mississippi was the turning point for me in blues music. I think East Texas has nurtured a number of great musicians, but historically they left for bigger and better things. Freddie King, George Jones, etc…

As far as drawing me into the blues at TCU, I missed Mississippi, and so I went looking for what I missed and found it deep in the depths of South Dallas. An entire subculture of music that exists underneath all the glitz and glamor of Dallas. This is the real turning point where I decided to take the plunge and begin establishing myself as a musician and performer. I would soon join an all black blues band and tour every juke joint within Texas and even Oklahoma.

Johnny: Who were some of your early influences as you were getting your start in and around Oxford, Mississippi?

Edwin: Again, the main figure would be James Son Thomas, but that all changed as I began to progress within the urban

areas of Dallas. There’s a transformation that the black blues world made from rural blues to soul blues. From the delta of Mississippi, I would soon evolve into the sounds of Johnnie Taylor, a much more soulful sound or slick blues as some folks refer to it.

Johnny: As you split time at TCU between class and a burgeoning musical career, how did your family react and were there ever any doubts in the early days that you'd made the wrong choice?

Edwin: I actually graduated from TCU with a degree in liberal arts, and I would go on splitting my time between a day job and a musical career; something that I still struggle with today. I tell people all the time that I don’t know if music is a temptation, a distraction, or an opportunity. I’ve done well with my career as a designer, but I’ve struggled all my life between two loves.

Johnny: Obviously history proved you made the right choice, finding success while becoming a regular in the blues scene and playing with some of the legends in the business.

With so many memorable gigs with legends in the genre, are you able to pick one show that just stands above the rest?

Edwin: The best moments never happen on stage. Shows are calculated and rehearsed. There are moments that happen on stage that are special, but a true moment happens unrehearsed and by the seat of your pants. That moment for me was during a funeral. Mary Collier, or Lady Princess as she was known, passed away when I was in my thirties or so. She was a mainstay in the south Dallas blues scene and the greatest unknown vocalist you’ve never heard. We performed together for 10 years or so before she would finally pass away. Every well known south Dallas blues artist attended the funeral. We all sat on the back row. Ernie Johnson, R.L. Griffin, Tutu Jones, Big Charles Young, and myself. During the service, Johnnie Taylor entered from the side carrying a folding chair then placing it in the center aisle in front of God and everyone, unfolded it, and sat down. While whispers and gasps of surprise riddled through the crowd, the preacher asked if Mr. Taylor would like to come up and say a few words. Johnnie then stood up, took the mic and began to sing, requesting a male chorus from the back row. We all stood up, went to the front, and backed him up while he sang gospel. One of the most amazing moments of my life and completely unplanned. I’ll never forget it.

Johnny: Your career has had several twists and turns over the years, a major one of which was when the backing band for that very same Johnnie Taylor asked you to be the band leader after his death in 2000. Was that a call you were expecting and how did it feel to have to take on that mantle?

Edwin: It was a huge undertaking and meant a lot of rehearsals. I hate rehearsals. Horns, charts, timing had to be

right on for all numbers. It’s a ton of work for a big band due to the number of moving parts, but the impact is over the top. Some of the best little moments of absolute bliss happen during solo horn parts with a powerhouse of players pushing sound forward.

Johnny: Musicians aren't exactly famous for knowing when to walk away from a gig, especially a particularly sweet one, but you were able to successfully step away and focus that creative drive on your business for the sake of your family. When was the moment you knew it was time to come home?

Edwin: Like I said, the battle has never ended. I’ve been stepping back and forth over the line for thirty years. It’s a struggle I’m sure I’ll be dealing with until they put me in the ground.

Johnny: So as it turns out, music wasn't done with you, and a few years later you find yourself once again at the head of another band. This time, however, the big band sound has been traded in for something completely different. How did the idea for the Red Clay Roadhouse Band come about, and who are the members?

Edwin: What’s interesting about this sound is that it showed up every year on a fishing trip. Each year, thirty close friends would leave the world behind and head to Uncertain, Texas for an annual fishing trip. I always had pickers show up, and we would jam around the campfire at night.

One year, my pickers out of Austin couldn’t make it so I pulled in Cadillac Sky out of Fort Worth. I became close to two of their members. Ross Holmes on fiddle and Matt Menefee on banjo. Ross would soon hit the big time touring with Mumford and Sons. Between gigs with Bruce Hornsby, he called me and wanted to know if we could do something between shows.

I really didn’t know what we could do on stage, so I literally threw some songs on the table. Before we knew what was happening, a new sound was born in Tyler, Texas.

Johnny: The sound seems to me to be a unique blend of blues, bluegrass, roots, and Americana, thrown into a blender, mixed-up, and poured out on stage. How would you describe it?

Edwin: Yeah, that’s it all right. Hard to define whatever is coming out of that blender, but it sure tastes good.

Johnny: With genres like Rock and Country dominating the gig landscape in this area, how has the reception been to what the Red Clay Roadhouse Band brings to a show?

Edwin: That has been the most interesting piece to this new sound. Most, if not all, of my followers are from the ages of 45-75. They are people that grew up listening to real music and long for something that’s not made in a machine. I would like to think that we represent what’s right in the music world.

Johnny: What is on the horizon for Edwin Holt and the Red Clay Roadhouse Band for 2017?

Edwin: Ha! Who knows. I’m taking this whole thing one day at a time. I’ve been doing it for so long that I’ve given up the idea of becoming famous. I just do what I do because I love making music. And if I can make someone happy with what I do on stage, then I’m all the better for it.

Johnny: If I'm a new fan looking to go to my first Red Clay Roadhouse Band concert, what can I expect?

Edwin: Food for the soul, my brother. So I hope you’re hungry!

Big Pines Blues Festival:

June 2nd & 3rd Longview Gets The Blues This two-day outdoor blues festival, formerly T-Bone Walker Blues Fest, will take place again this year and guarantees a great lineup of blues. The event will take place at the Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center located at 100 Grande Blvd., Longview.

Friday performances will feature a younger set of blues musicians that festival organizers have styled “Next Generation of the Blues.”

Topping the evening of free music will be crowd favorites, the Peterson Brothers, along with Kilgore's own Ally Venable Band.

Saturday’s full day of music kicks off at 10am with the 2017 Junior Showcase for young musicians 18 and under. Admission to those performances are free to the public.

There will also be a car and cycle show, a fun run, food vendors, and beverages.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Elvin Bishop and his band will headline the professional performances that begin Saturday afternoon.

Also on the schedule are vocalist and Dallas native Darrell Nulisch, Andrew “Jr. Boy” Jones Blues Band featuring Kerrie Lepai, plus AJ Cascio & The Two Tone Blues Band, Johnny and The Night Crawlers, and the Pleasant Hill Quilting Group.

Kilgore Celebrates Local Music and Food at Porch Fest

By Jenn Ford The Back Porch Stage on Broadway is preparing for the Second Annual Porch Fest set for the weekend of May 12th-13th. The festival is a two-day event with more than 23 musical acts, countless vendors, a children’s area, crawfish, catfish, and a magician.

Advanced tickets can be purchased at the restaurant or at the gate on the weekend of the event. Ticket prices are $10 for one day and $15 for two days for adults. Children ages 6-12 are $5 per day, while children under 6 have free entry. Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Most of the talent is local, featuring awardwinning artists from Kilgore, Henderson, Tyler, Longview, Hallsville, Gilmer, and Kemp, to name a few. Even 2016 “America’s Got Talent” sweetheart, Kadie Lynn will be at the festival for the second time around, performing on the main stage on Saturday with her new full band.

“What I like most about Porch Fest is all of the amazing artists and bands that you get to see. Last year, we got there pretty early and stayed ‘til it was almost over,” said Kadie Lynn.

“I can’t wait for even more talent this year.”

Kadie Lynn spent some of the time enjoying the wares of local Kilgore boutique, Everything That Blings, which set up a booth in the vendor area.

Jacqueline Henly, owner of Everything that Blings, showed Kadie Lynn a rockabilly dress with beautiful roses and guitars on it. They bought it on the spot at the festival.

Kadie Lynn’s mother, Deborah Roberson said, “That dress turned out to be a hit in the parade and on stage of the ‘America’s Got Talent’ Kadie Lynn Day in Gun Barrel City. I can’t wait to see what treasure I find this year.”

They believe all those who bravely battle this disease - and all those who support them - change the world in a beautiful way with their courage and presence.

Wrap it up, I'll take it.

By Derrick White “Art is everything to me. It is how I live, pay my bills, and how I learn.

It is how I teach my children and anyone wanting to learn from me. It is how I sort my thoughts. It is how I meditate. It is how I stay sane. I believe we are made in the image of God. If so, we are all creators of our own worlds. I love to create, and I love to learn, so I can expand my world,” declares local artist April Moore.

Moore started out studying architecture at Texas A&M. She loved the design classes but not the technical part. So she moved on and spent a semester at home at Tyler Junior College and the University of Texas at Tyler. She graduated with a BFA in Visual Communications from UT Austin.

Moore spent the next ten years freelancing in Houston and Tyler, working for all kinds of businesses. She started working for Brookshire’s Grocery Company in 2001 as a graphic artist doing design work, including the ads you receive in your weekly mail, working with a food stylist to create the “Celebrate Cooking” magazine, and her first vehicle wraps.

During a short stint in Louisiana, she set up her design shop called ‘April Moore Design Store’ to continue freelancing. Moore then came back and began working for the University of Texas at Tyler as a graphic artist for the Marketing and Communications Department.

Moore recently participated in Beauty and the Box, a beautification project hosted by the City of Tyler to turn the utility boxes around town into local works of art. The Beauty and the Box project challenged local artists to create

pieces of art to be wrapped around utility boxes.

Moore is the creator of the artwork that led to the recent utility box art wrap hullabaloo. A resident wanted it moved out of view of their home and into a more public space instead of residential areas. However, others showed up in droves in support of the artist and the image.

“I was honored to get to do a box, and then when I heard it was immediately being removed, I was heartbroken,” she states. “For my ‘Hide & Seek’ utility box art, Bobby Conley, owner of The Tyler Wrap Company gave me the opportunity to draw the box they were sponsoring for the City of Tyler’s Beauty and the Box Project. I was floored by the support for my art to stay where it had been placed. It was so cool to see the community stand up for art in our city, where it is so lacking at times.”

“It is exciting to see the city make an effort to put some art on our streets. Art gives folks a place to gather and creates community,” states the artist. “My piece is called ‘Hide & Seek’ because it is a celebration of joy and play. I made the kids so colorful because I wanted to represent the fact that we are all colors – the way God created us. Also, I was creating street art, and I wanted the box to be wrapped in color like so many murals in large cities. Young children naturally play together. They don't see race or color.

So, I thought the theme worked well for this project,” she adds.

Acclaimed Local Photographer Langham Turns Lens on Tylerites with TMA’s “Brickstreet Anthology” A project more than two years in the making is coming to fruition with the Tyler Museum of Art’s first new exhibition of 2017.

The distinct personalities of more than 50 Tylerites as captured on film are the focus of “Brickstreet Anthology: Photographs by Robert Langham,” open to the public through May 14th. Admission is free.

Organized by the TMA, “Brickstreet Anthology” is the product of acclaimed local photographer Robert Langham’s extensive research and travel throughout Tyler “to train his lens on numerous local personalities who are as varied as they are dynamic,” TMA curator Caleb Bell said. Last year, Moore became the art director for UT Tyler. The artist declares, “I love my job because I touch so many different media, from the university viewbook and recruiting materials, to wall murals for athletics, to vehicle wraps. I get to work with an incredible team supporting me, at what I believe is a beautiful campus.”

Moore continues to freelance through April Moore Design Store, designing brand materials as well as car and boat wraps for The Tyler Wrap Company. “I love that I get to see my work driving down the road. Wraps have a much longer shelf life. I hate knowing that sometimes my hard work on a newspaper ad ends up in the trash,” laughs Moore.

“I have always used a Mac. UTT sent me to a design conference opening the world of touch screen technology to me. I treated myself to an iPad Pro, and now I am drawing on it all the time. I can draw something and it could end up as big as the side of a building. I can paint on it, too. I am able to turn my iPencil into any kind of pen or brush tool I desire. I am also trying to learn the art of lettering on it,” informs Moore.

She adds, “Our school is growing faster than we can keep up with, and we are figuring out who we need to be to best serve all of East Texas. It is an exciting time to be a part of the community here at UT Tyler.”

Like many artists, Moore grew up loving to create. She currently knits and crochets. Her grandmother and parents encouraged her by giving lessons and providing supplies for her crafting, drawing, and painting ideas. “I grew up oil painting with my teachers Daphna Lilienstern, Penny Sanders, and Ann Andrews,” remembers the artist.

Moore is inspired and influenced by impressionist and post-impressionist artists such as Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh, Georges-Pierre Seurat, and Henri Matisse. She also responds to the contemporary work of artists like Janet Echelman and her giant, floating, fiber sculptures.

Moore explains, “I think I like all the backstories almost more than the pieces themselves, learning about the why and the how. Everyone has a story, and I love stories.”

on black-and-white film rather than relying on digital imagery, Langham’s subjects range from business and civic leaders to citizens going about their everyday business “to capture the essence of what it means to be a member of our unique community.”

Tyler native Langham has been photographing East Texas subjects since 1971, when he took his first photojournalism class at TJC. His avid interest in fine art photography led him to an apprenticeship with the legendary Ansel Adams, and eventually, wide acclaim in his own right while maintaining a successful commercial photography business in his hometown.

Additionally, he has shared his passion with new generations for more than two decades as a photography professor at his alma mater, TJC. Support for the exhibition is provided by Gold Level Collectors’ Circle Sponsor Myrtis D. Smith.

Related programming in the works include a summer film series co-hosted by the City of Tyler's Liberty Hall. The exhibition runs through August 20th.

This local talent shows no signs of slowing down. By Gini Rainey “The Secret Wife” by Gill Paul If you are a fan of Russian history and unrequited love, this book has your name all over it. “The Secret Wife,” is a captivating romance between cavalry officer Dmitri Malama and Grand Duchess Tatiana, the second daughter of Russia’s last tsar, who first met in 1914. It also tells the story of Dmitri’s great-granddaughter, Kitty, who inherits his secluded lake cabin in upstate New York and travels there from England to escape her cheating husband.

Moving back and forth between Dmitri and Tatiana’s romance in revolutionary Russia, and Kitty’s life as she attempts to restore the cabin and perhaps her marriage, this wonderfully researched novel gives an insight into the life and times of Russia in the early 20th century.

Using her incredible and imaginative writing skills, Paul weaves a history for truly believable characters because Tatiana and Dmitri actually did exist, and perhaps Tatiana was not murdered along with the rest of the Romanov family. The historical facts were so masterfully written right up to the murders that you are left with a sense of what might have been, if…

“The Secret Wife” was beautifully and skillfully written and is one of the best historical novels around. The characters are complex, and the research was diligent and gives insight to the disappearance of the Romanov family. It is definitely worthy of a read.

Rating: 5 of 5 – Copyright 2016, Avon “If I’m Found” by Terri Blackstock Continuing the story of Casey Cox, that began with Blackstock’s first book “If I Run,” on the run because of a murder she didn’t commit and told from three points of view, this was a real page turner for me. Escaping her hideout in Shady Grove, Alabama, and heading west, Casey takes on a new identity and stays under the radar of smarmy and on the take cops who murdered her father. Finally finding someone she can trust, Casey begins to work with Dylan Roberts (a private investigator who was hired to find her) to uncover the graft in the Shreveport, Louisiana police force.

This book covers everything from PTSD, child abuse, bad cops, false accusations, living on the lam all the way to a hint of romance

and discovering God is in your corner. With great character development, a fast pace, and a whole lot of intrigue, this was one book I could not put down.

This book came to me for review from the publisher, and when I received it I found it was the second in the Casey Cox series. I was a bit concerned that it might be difficult to pick up where the first book left off, but that was not the case. With the three main characters telling the backstory from each of their points of view, it didn’t take long for me to figure out the players and where they had come from.

And, wouldn’t you know it? There was a major non-ending to this book! Am I going to read the next one in the series?

Pretty darn sure I am.

I think I’m also going to connect with the first one. I recommend that if you like a fast-paced, hard-to-put-down book, this is definitely one you really need to read.

Rating: 5 of 5 – Copyright 2017, Zondervan “A Lifetime of Coincidents” by Jack Tep I can’t deny it. I love being contacted by publishers/agents to review books because it provides me with an opportunity to read something outside of my normal genre and helps give their writers’ efforts a boost. This book might be an exception. Written by retired Jack Tep, this book is, in theory, about how his life experiences connect to greater events in history.

Most of this book content is made up of very short, random observations by Tep that are thinly and remotely tied to events or people that he feels share a connection to him or events in his personal life. Unfortunately, his rambling efforts tend to support the theory that you can obtain connectivity to just about anything working backwards from the facts.

The irrelevancy of so many of the historical observations in relation to Mr. Teps’ experiences is evident in this short bit: “On my way home from work, I would often stop at the corner 7-Eleven and buy some candy for the kids. A short time later, Sammy Davis Jr. had a big hit, quite possibly the biggest of his long career, with ‘Candy Man.’” It left me asking “..and?” For me, it would have made a whole lot more sense if Mr. Tep would have at least indicated that perhaps his children had called him the Candy Man or began to, following the release of that song.

I’m not saying that his writings aren’t worthwhile. I’m just saying that perhaps the contents of this book would be better shared with Mr. Tep’s family and close friends. I will say, though, that I have to admire the courage of his convictions in that he took the time to write all of this down and have this little book published. It’s more than a lot of people do when they say they would like to write a book.
