2010 SVA Yearbook Design Type: Book Design Creative Director: E. Genevieve Williams The yearbook serves a special function at SVA— our mission is to capture the energy, talents, and vitality of the graduating students across all disciplines. The yearbook functions as a memento for students, a showpiece for the school, and a recruiting instrument. Its particular challenge is to create a distinctive book year after year that represents the enormous talent found at the School of Visual Arts. The 2010 School of Visual Arts Yearbook is presented in a board game box containing a DVD animation and five small books. The first book offers headshots of all the students in the video with time codes so that they can easily find their scenes on the DVD. The second is a humorous listing of “necessary objects” according to our 2010 grads, along with quotes from Picasso, Dr Seuss, and others on creativity and making art. The third book is based on mad libs asking students to interact with the book by recalling their SVA experiences-smells, smiles, events. The fourth is a set of images of 2010 SVA graduating seniors,
set in a beautifully written and designed essay on the “necessity of illusions.” Possibly the most relevant illusion to a graduating artist is the illusion that if the work is good, fame and fortune will follow. The essay culminates with a passionate call to rely on our creations and creative process as our
reward. The fifth book is a poetic look at objects and form, creativity and memory. The book describes the creative process of forming an idea, beginning to carry it out, feeling that it may not be as great as we initially imagined, pulling back, and finally going forward for better or worse.
