My artistic journey began with figurative storytelling that reflected my intimate experiences with the people, plants, and animals I knew as a child roaming the woods of rural Pennsylvania.
My father, a landscape architect and a horticulturist, was my first mentor and teacher. He taught me to appreciate nature. With him I learned the names of the plants, common and Latin. His landscape paintings are true and depict the harsh terrain we knew together.
I escaped my rural roots by seeking an education. I studied stained glass in London with Alan Younger. Working in stained glass helped me abstract my figurative style and forced me to work in brilliant, transparent colors. My fascination with transparency and light has endured.
I studied drawing and painting respectively with John Groth and William Scharf at the Art Students League in NYC. I have Master’s in Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts in NYC, mentored by Will Insley whose involvement with bettering the earth and mankind pushed my work in new directions.
Additionally, I have a master’s in Ethics from Union Theological Seminary in NYC, and a Ph.D. (ABD) in Philosophy, Art, and Critical Thought from The European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.
I taught at the School of Visual Arts in NYC for twentyfour years. I have been a resident artist and lecturer in the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, and Italy.
My work spans decades and takes many forms—from sculpture to painting to stained glass. It is grounded in the patterns and themes found in nature. Currently, I am working in acrylics on board. I have shown and sold my work locally and internationally.
I teach privately and at Parsons, The New School in NYC.
