OUTCOMES

Clarice May Jacobson

THE CALCULUS ON CARDIAC CARE Working on Wall Street for many years, Clarice May Jacobson has always been good with numbers. Although no longer reviewing balance sheets, she remains interested in how the numbers add up and keeps her eye on the stats for Englewood Health’s Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery programs: 4,000 openheart surgeries since 2000; double-digit annual growth in cardiac surgery; top 10% nationally in coronary bypass surgery according to CareChex and ranked in the nation’s top 5% for patient safety by Healthgrades. Today, these are the key quality metrics that matter to Clarice as a mother and Englewood Cliffs resident. She considers herself fortunate to have world-class healthcare so close to home. Advancing performance, outcomes and efficiencies in the area of cardiology is personal for Clarice who lost her 42-year-old brother unexpectedly to a heart condition. Andrew, she describes, was the inspiration for her late parents’ long history of philanthropy and Clarice passionately continues their legacy while honoring her brother’s memory.

Through a 2018 gift to The Englewood Fund, Clarice championed an investment in state-ofthe-art cardiac catherization equipment that improves image quality, enhances safety and efficiency, and minimizes patient contrast dose and radiation to staff. “In the case of a cardiac event, seconds can make all the difference – and that is the impact of a first-class hospital in our backyard that leads in innovative cardiac care with the latest technology. It can mean the difference between life and death,” says Clarice. When donors like Clarice May Jacobson support The Englewood Fund, they know it generates a strong return on their investment. Their support is pivotal to staying ahead of cardiovascular disease with high-value services, clinical advancements and improved outcomes – creating an immediate and powerful impact on patient care.

In 2018, Englewood Health Foundation hosted a series of informative dinner discussions focusing on our ongoing growth as a highly-acclaimed regional leader in healthcare. Several key service lines were presented, including the Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery programs at Englewood Health’s Heart and Vascular Institute which continue to experience unprecedented demand. Donors were eager to help support the acquisition of revolutionary equipment to perform both minimally-invasive and complex surgeries yielding higher success rates, less risk and shorter recovery times. “It is projected that 44% of the population will have some form of cardiovascular disease by 2030. As a leader in cardiovascular care, we must engage in continuous improvement to drive forward greater outcomes by investing in new technologies, advancing clinical treatments and elevating performance to higher levels. This is all made possible through partners in philanthropy.” Samuel Suede, MD | Chief, Section of Cardiology and Medical Director, Cardiac Rehabilitation

RIGHT IN REACH Every 10 minutes, a life is lost to opioid addiction. Additionally, half of all Americans will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime. The reality of these alarming statistics* tends to hide just below the surface – until suddenly erupting into our everyday lives. Larry and Pat Shadek understand that all too well. These forty-year Bergen County residents were unexpectedly thrust into this frightening world after learning their son Gregory was struggling with depression and addiction. As a mother and medical nurse practitioner, Pat instinctively knew immediate intervention and treatment were essential, yet even as a healthcare insider the uncertainties on where and how to access the help so desperately needed was numbing. Despite unwavering love and support, the family quickly came to realize many challenges including a lack of qualified local providers, extensive lead time for appointments, prohibitive costs and exhaustive red tape. The Shadeks ultimately lost Gregory to the grip of addiction in 2016. He was only 26. “For those battling substance abuse or mental illness – and their families – ready access to qualified, stigma-free treatment is everything. Eliminating financial, social and geographic barriers to critical care can save lives. We are proud and passionate to lend our support in that mission,” says Pat.

With behavioral health a leading concern in our region, Englewood Health is furthering its commitment to expand and integrate a comprehensive outpatient program to better address the challenge. Thanks to the Shadeks’ generous leadership gift to the Englewood Health Foundation, The Gregory P. Shadek Behavioral Care Center, named in honor of their son, will deliver much-needed access to a network of services and establish a continuum of care. Most importantly, the treatment and support programs offered through the Center are insurance agnostic, eliminating a common and often insurmountable obstacle to care. “Throughout his life, Gregory touched everyone with a quiet kindness and gentle spirit. His impact continues, although now differently, benefiting those in our community who are suffering and most in need,” explains Pat. With the steadfast support of our donors, we are making substantial strides in eliminating the stigma attached to behavioral health issues, providing broader access and minimizing the ripple effects mental illness and addiction have on future generations.

These all-important behavioral health services are part of Englewood Health’s primary care network. In 2018, the addition of two psychiatrists and one advanced practice nurse enabled the Center to manage over 2,000 sessions with 777 patients. Five newly-hired Licensed Clinical Social Worker Psychotherapists provided 2,316 treatment appointments to another 437 patients, while three additional Social Workers support dedicated behavioral health coverage in Englewood Hospital’s Emergency Department. “The continued expansion of a talented and well-focused team powered by the support of generous benefactors like the Shadeks will enable Englewood Health to improve the mental health of those we serve with system-wide seamless and convenient care, irrespective of insurance coverage.” Stephen Bischoff, MD | Director of Behavioral Health for the Englewood Health Physician Network * Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

EXPERIENCE

Judy Marcus, RN, (left) with Jane Young

THE CARE TO CONNECT Go for it. Those three simple words lit a mother’s passion and set in motion what would become Jane Young’s indelible impact on countless Englewood Health patients – and those dedicated to caring for them.

“The ability of a caregiver to go above and beyond – to be so keenly aware of an individual patient’s needs – provides an incredible level of comfort and hope. This experience ignited my desire to nurture and strengthen their role as healers,” recalls Jane.

Every day for what seemed an eternity, Jane sat at her son’s hospital bedside. At just 28, Maxwell Shaw was fighting stomach cancer and forced to stop an independent and vibrant life, including cherished time with family and friends, adventurous travel and a promising career in finance. In the many hours and days spent together as Max received treatment at Englewood Hospital, this mother and son shared conversation, hidden strength, fond memories – and, one key observation.

In a quiet moment with Max, Jane shared her vision to establish a program to further enhance the patient experience by providing caregivers with resources to address physical and emotional burnout. Max gave the green light to go for it. He understood first-hand the impact of the devoted caregiver, Judy Marcus. For Jane and Max, Judy epitomized compassionate care. Her support and guidance proved instrumental in bringing Jane’s vision into reality.

The care given to Max by his Englewood Health physicians and nurses was more than clinical. Max especially benefited from a level of compassionate care given by Judy Marcus, RN, focusing on his emotional and spiritual well-being. This patientcentered care was beyond what Jane could hope for in a hospital setting. Certainly, the tenacity and grace Max showed throughout his struggle was no surprise to the mother who knew him so well. What she did not anticipate was the significance of a caregiver’s capacity to connect with a patient.

Max lost his fight with cancer in 2010. The following year, The Maxwell Shaw Series was established and continues to grow thanks to Jane and her ability to inspire generosity from family and friends. Creating more than opportunities, these donors help foster a patient-centered culture on the front lines and allow caregivers to maintain the highest standards of quality, delivering a world-class patient experience.

Named in memory of Max, The Maxwell Shaw Series is led by a clinically trained facilitator and provides clinical staff with an opportunity to reflect on their day-to-day experiences, share thoughts and strengthen their role as healers. Each series consists of three two-hour confidential sessions with approximately 10-15 caregivers in attendance. “As caregivers, we are called upon to help guide a patient’s journey by keeping them positive and comfortable, listening to their concerns and providing support for the often-grueling demands of treatment. Patients like Max become our family. We physically and emotionally invest in their care and helping them find peace.” Christine Kata, MSN, RN, NP-C, PCCN, CNML | Nurse Manager, Cardiac Telemetry and Step Down As program coordinator for The Maxwell Shaw Series, Christine credits the Foundation and donors like Jane for helping recharge indispensable caregivers when they may be running on empty. According to Christine, the impact of this program is two-fold – caregivers benefit from insight on how to better manage stress and improve relaxation and in turn, they are more equipped to deliver an enhanced patient experience.

WALK FOR AWARENESS

More than 700 supporters laced up their sneakers and took to the streets of Englewood for the 2018 Walk for Awareness on October 7. The Foundation proudly dedicated the 2018 Walk to the memory of Paul T. Fader, Esq., who co-founded the Walk for Awareness in 1998 with his wife, Jill. Thanks to the generosity of many, over $160,000 was raised to benefit The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center and the many patients that it serves. 14
