It was hard to contain my enthusiasm after landing my dream summer internship in Englewood Health’s Population Health Department. Eyeing a career in social work, I was super excited to bring programs into the Englewood community that help people better manage their everyday lives and feel good. We delivered nutritional cooking demonstrations, exercise classes and workshops about how to shop healthy on a budget. In the schools, we taught students about healthy snacking and ways to reduce stress. I loved that the programs were created with community diversity in mind, with many presented in Spanish. The smiles on attendees’ faces let us know that we were making differences with tools to improve their health. I was making an impact! I shared all these stories and so many more “ah-hah” moments with my parents each night. I guess Mom and Dad were pretty impressed because they chose to make a gift to the Foundation in support of the Shirvan Family Live Well Center opening in downtown Englewood. Soon, I will be off to NYU and hope to return to a medical setting after earning a Master of Social Work. If I’m lucky, maybe that will be here, back home at Englewood Health. As a young boy, I admired my mother’s strength and compassion as a neonatal nurse, but I often thought I could never follow in her footsteps. Never say never! Today, I am an Englewood Health critical care nurse anxious to return to the ICU where I served as a Patient Care Secretarial Associate three years ago. Thanks to a nursing program that recruits, educates and empowers, I am part of an award-winning team proudly earning Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for the fifth consecutive time. My days on the floor as a staff nurse began at the height of the pandemic. The frontline was exceptionally challenging – and also incredibly inspiring. Together, we set new standards of care, kept a promise of excellence and saved countless lives. Thanks to tremendous community support and faith in one another, we are now poised to play an even larger role in improving the lives of patients. This is our moment and I am ready.
