The Recipe for Better Health A hearty chicken marsala – what’s not to love about this traditional dish, especially when mindfully prepared using healthy ingredients like mushrooms (powerful little immunity boosters that help lower cholesterol) and sweet potatoes (a go-to source of fiber packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants). For the standing-room-only crowd at Health E Englewood’s live cooking demonstration this past winter, learning how to make the dish was just one step on their journey toward a healthier tomorrow. Designed to increase awareness and understanding of fundamental skills in the critical areas of nutrition, and physical and emotional wellness, Health E Englewood is a five-year educational wellness program. A leadership gift made by the Shirvan family in July of 2019 helped to underwrite this program which will be offered three times annually at various locations throughout the city of Englewood. Passionate about their community and healthy living, Mark and Amy Shirvan say that supporting a wellness program that encourages greater well-being for their neighbors was a natural fit for their family. “Knowing that Englewood Health delivers cutting-edge clinical care and embraces an extraordinary commitment to prevention and wellness is tremendous peace of mind,” says Amy, Englewood Health Foundation Trustee.
With diabetes, obesity and mental illness continuing an upward trend among adults and children, Health E Englewood helps combat a multitude of factors that create gaps in care for vulnerable populations. Program participants benefit from attending stress management seminars, fitness and yoga classes, healthful and affordable meal planning and live cooking demonstrations led by professional chefs and Englewood Health nutritionists. For the Shirvans, the spirit of philanthropy is generational. Englewood Health Foundation Trustee Stanley Shirvan has long been a champion in advancing the mission of Englewood Health through leadership-level giving. “I enjoy knowing that our investment is at work here, close to home. Attending the workshop sessions, I see clearly how useful and informative they are to our community and that is extremely rewarding,” explains Stanley. Mark appreciates the example his parents have set for him when it comes to their generosity and commitment. “It feels good to be able to carry on that legacy and instill those same lessons with our children who are now grown and starting families.”

Community supporters and breast cancer survivors join in raising funds for the Englewood Health Foundation’s 2019 Walk for Awareness.
A Powerful Engine for Englewood For those who live and work here, the energy is palpable. Englewood is a thriving community like no other; filled with heart, passionate commitment and unparalleled diversity. When we come together with a shared mission, we go full throttle. For a prime example, look at any one of the many annual Englewood Health Foundation events where enjoying a good time with friends always goes hand-in-hand with raising awareness and dollars for critical healthcare advancements. Over 2,000 enthusiastic benefactors raised more than $2.3 million to benefit the health system through sponsorship and attendance at 2019 special events. One of those events, the Foundation’s annual Walk for Awareness, held on October 27, 2019, saw hundreds lace up their sneakers to help make a difference for uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients struggling to overcome financial obstacles to care. Marking its 20th anniversary, the Walk has generated $2.5 million to benefit The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center which treats an average of 60,000 patients annually.

These signature events are powered thanks to committed community business contributors like brother and sister Ted Siebold and Jane Seligmann of Englewood’s Town Motors, a family-owned and operated business that has long embraced their corporate citizenry. Town Motors, and many other Englewood Health Foundation business sponsors, are members of the Caduceus Society and among our most distinguished philanthropic partners. “Englewood is a small and amazing community that we’ve proudly been a part of since 1946,” says Town Motors’ Chief Executive Officer Ted Siebold who is also an Englewood Health Foundation Trustee. “By working in partnership with the Foundation, we are able to make a positive impact on the place we call home.” That impact began nearly four decades ago and grows each year, right alongside their landmark business. Masters in Bloodless Medicine For patients seeking the highest-quality healthcare, no distance is too far to travel. This is especially true when it comes to bloodless medicine and surgery, an area of expertise pioneered at Englewood Health in the early 1990s through the Institute for Patient Blood Management and Bloodless Medicine and Surgery.
Globally recognized, physicians from prestigious hospitals around the world visit to learn more about Englewood Health’s progressive expertise in blood management and to gain a first-hand look at the model from which to build their own programs.
Advancing education and outcomes in bloodless medicine and oncology is an area of personal interest for Janet and Jon Harrington, a retired couple from Bernardsville, NJ, who are Jehovah’s Witnesses devoting their time to public ministry and volunteering. “Since we view our beliefs as ruling out the transfusion of whole blood, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma, we are extremely grateful for access to Englewood Health where bloodless medicine is consistently a top priority.” The ground-breaking advances made here are the subject of numerous educational seminars, including the November 22, 2019, symposium Patient Blood Management in the Oncology Patient: Challenges and Opportunities for Better Outcomes. This seminar, attended by hundreds of international medical professionals and featuring prominent clinicians and scientists, was underwritten thanks to a leadership-level gift from the Harringtons. 6

Englewood Health surgeons perform bloodless surgery for improved patient outcomes.
Janet spent her career as a cognitive neuropsychologist, teaching and conducting research on cognitive processes and brain development. She is also a breast cancer survivor. Her first connection with Englewood Health was through The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center and she remembers that her medical team, led by Dr. Merle McIntosh, quickly gained her trust, confidence and appreciation. “The innovative care I received at the Breast Center was far and away superior,” recalls Janet. Bloodless medicine uses science-based medical and surgical techniques enabling physicians to conserve a patient’s own blood and avoid the need for transfusions. The goal is to improve patient outcomes and respect patients for whom blood transfusions are not an option. Yet, studies prove that bloodless medicine has considerable benefits for all patients, such as fewer complications, faster recoveries and lower risk of incompatibility or postoperative infections. “Cancer treatment can negatively affect the blood system so treating cancer in a bloodless environment presents challenges. When I had my surgery, my team of doctors put me at ease right away and I absolutely believe Englewood Health’s bloodless procedures afforded me the best treatment,” says Janet. Janet’s positive experience as a patient, coupled with a familiarity in medical research, led her and Jon to explore the opportunity of directing their gift to underwrite a research project on anemia, the world’s most common medical condition. Too often, patients enter surgery anemic because the condition is commonly underrecognized. This can lead to complications and poor patient outcomes. “Understanding how well medical professionals are able to detect and correct anemia is particularly important in cancer treatment. I am enthusiastic to be able to support that important research at Englewood Health,” shares Janet. Englewood Health is the first hospital in the country to offer patient blood management as a standard of care. The ongoing scientific research and education made possible thanks to the philanthropic commitment of donors like the Harringtons positively impact the care of countless patients and allow Englewood Health to continue leading by example. 7

With laces tied and spirits high, participants braved the rain to join the Englewood Health Foundation for the 2019 Walk for Awareness on October 27. Honorary Chair Nina Pineda of WABC was on hand to help celebrate 20 years of making a difference. Walkers travelled a special ‘route’ through the hospital lined with cheering well-wishers. Thanks to the generosity of many, the Walk raised $150,000 to benefit The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center.
