The Circle of Care

2015 Annual Report

Our Mission: “To create one patient experience across the organization.

— Warren Geller

A circle, which has no gaps and no sharp corners, perfectly represents the compassionate, humanistic patient experience provided by Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Every element, from direct patient care to facilities, technology, programs and training, fits together to surround the patient with an uncompromising, seamless level of excellence. Throughout this Report, you will see concrete results of community philanthropy. While each achievement is a source of pride in itself, the whole is so much greater than its parts. Whether they come in through the Emergency Care Center, the Family Birth Place or the Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center, patients and loved ones recognize that they have entered the EHMC Circle of Care.

True Partners in Care This has been a most outstanding year for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation. Together, we raised more than $12.7 million to support direct patient care, introduced essential new programs and modernized facilities and technology specifically designed to serve people in the best way possible. Our philanthropic community shared an exciting moment in the history of EHMC last June when we celebrated the public launch of Transforming the Future: Our Campaign for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. With your support, we reached the halfway point to the $50 million Campaign goal in 2015. This, coupled with the enthusiastic turnout for the Gala, Walk for Awareness and other events, underscores the profound connection friends and supporters of the Foundation have to EHMC and to improving the health and well-being of our shared communities.

It is no longer a question of “How far have we come?” but “How far will we go?”

Thank you for being a true partner in this lasting success. The innovations, progress and accomplishments you made possible have brought EHMC to the forefront of humanistic care. As the progress documented in this 2015 Annual Report demonstrates, it is no longer a question of “How far have we come?” but “How far will we go?” We are deeply grateful to the benefactors, volunteers, friends and corporations who share our vision to sustain and grow our standing as the Medical Center the community relies on for life. For all that you have done, and all that you will do to complete the Circle of Care, we thank you. Your continued commitment to our future ensures that many of tomorrow’s breakthroughs will be made possible by work done at EHMC today.

Direct Patient Care

284,070 patients served in 2015.

Your gifts impact the health of the community. More people receive exceptional care, close to home, thanks to the generosity of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation donors. Everything — from extended service hours for patients to resources for caregivers and post-care follow up by way of a newly launched call center — is directly tied to the philanthropic dedication to this Medical Center. The numbers tell an important story. In 2015, EHMC treated 284,070 patients, a 15% increase over the previous year. The Emergency Care Center accommodated the increasing demand for 24/7 services in our area, helping more than 49,000 people in their time of need. Nearly 500 more families delivered their babies at the Family Birth Place and outpatient volume grew by 19%, affecting nearly one million lives in northern New Jersey and beyond. EHMC is growing and meeting some of this region’s most pressing needs by assuring greater access to superior care in the communities where people live. The Medical Center’s outstanding record was recognized with more than 40 awards in 2015 for patient safety and satisfaction and, for the second consecutive year, the Leapfrog Group named EHMC one of the 100 Top Hospitals in the nation for providing the safest, highest quality healthcare.

“We want to see our community hospital grow because it is the best in the state.”

These outcomes — made possible by donors who care deeply about the health of the community — have a ripple effect. Talented and dedicated physicians want to provide care in an institution of excellence; this brought 100 new members to the Medical Staff in 2015. More healthcare providers want to partner with EHMC, extending our Circle of Care beyond Bergen County to Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Rockland counties. Donors, too, are inspired by the impact EHMC makes in local communities. Richard and Paula Schwartz recently moved back to Englewood and rediscovered the expert, compassionate care provided by a transformed EHMC. “I was so impressed with how far they have come and what kind of hospital it has become,” says Mrs. Schwartz. The family made a generous donation to the Family Birth Place NICU so that the needs of premature or critically ill newborns can be met with instant, expert care. “When I was having my children, mothers had to cross the river with any complications,” says Mrs. Schwartz, noting that the couple feel lucky to have EHMC nearby. “We want to see our community hospital grow because it is the best in the state. Frankly, that is exactly the track they are on.” 4

Grown Alongside EHMC John S. Wilson has been a long-time witness to the growth and legacy of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Even before he was born here in the early 1930s, his parents were active supporters of the small community hospital on Engle Street. His mother, Aileen, volunteered on the Nursing Council, and John was brought back for surgery at the hospital just 10 days after his birth. He recalls the physician who delivered and operated on him: Walter H. Phillips, MD, head of the medical staff and the namesake of the Dr. Walter Phillips Health Sciences Library. Throughout the intervening decades, his family showed consistent support in many ways, including gifting several rooms in the Medical Center. John has given the John A. Wilson and Aileen S. Wilson Room in The Russell and Angelica Berrie Center for Humanistic Care in honor of his parents, and he and his brother, David, have funded the Aileen S. Wilson Nursing Scholarship, which is awarded each May in honor of their mother. From 1995 through 2005, John also served on the Englewood Healthcare System Board of Trustees.

the of the Family Birth Place thanks to generous donors.

An Englewood resident, John worked in the securities industry until his retirement in 1992. “Since then, I have spent considerable time following the growth and progress of EHMC.” As a Trustee, he has enjoyed the unique opportunity to watch the Medical Center evolve through eight decades. “Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is in the best shape it has ever been in.” Most recently, John was inspired by members of the Garden Club of Englewood to support the Helen L. Fitzpatrick Garden. “Hopefully, EHMC would be high on anyone’s philanthropic list,” he says. “I can think of nothing more important than a strong and vibrant Medical Center serving Englewood and so many surrounding communities.”

Program Support

42,000+ people attended nearly community events sponsored or hosted by EHMC.

You help make great care even better. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center donors have a real hand in improving programs that promote health and wellness in the community. Gifts to the Foundation in 2015 supported education and training for EHMC caregivers, broadened outreach and forged research partnerships that drive innovative treatments and better patient outcomes. In 2015, a record number of 244 EHMC patients registered as subjects with the Clinical Research Center and 100 of them participated in treatment trials. Ongoing studies at the Center investigated therapies for stroke, heart disease and colorectal cancer and the findings of these studies may influence the course of treatment of these diseases. Continuing education for EHMC’s highly-trained clinicians advanced the Medical Center’s commitment to lead the way in humanistic care. Gifts to the Maxwell Shaw Series provided a forum for nurses and other members of the caregiving staff to reflect upon and process the non-medical dimensions of patient care so they may sustain and improve the delivery of top-notch, compassionate healthcare. Philanthropy also introduced cutting-edge technologies with a decidedly human touch. The Cahn Cancer Care Companions Program, launched in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, uses an oncology nurse navigator to guide newly diagnosed cancer patients through the treatment process and connects them to services at EHMC and support programs in the area. Benefactors clearly understand the difference humanistic care makes on the lives

and health of the communities EHMC serves. In its inaugural year, Heel the Soul, one of many donor-funded programs, brought Comfort Bags and a large measure of support to women battling serious illness. Gifts also paved the way for greater outreach. The Medical Center sponsored or hosted nearly 400 health and wellness events attended by more than 42,000 people in 2015. Free health screenings, caregiver support resources, new parent education and other initiatives ensure that EHMC is responsive to the needs of the greater community. Once people experience the Medical Center’s patient-focused approach, they want to pay it forward. “The doctors take the time to get to know you and you can tell they care about your mental and emotional condition just as much as they do for your medical [condition],” writes Jeff Flaster, who recently made a donation to the Foundation. “Giving is just a way for me to express my thanks and gratitude for the doctors — and everyone, really — at EHMC.” 6

A Generational Commitment to Care As a third generation physician, Sharon Scherl, MD, learned about caring for this community long before she earned her MD. Her father, Newton Scherl, MD, son of Sam Scherl, MD, became Englewood Hospital and Medical Center’s first gastroenterologist in 1964. Her mother, Sheila, volunteered at the Medical Center through the efforts of the Englewood Wives’ Club. Inspired by this example, young Sharon began volunteering her time as a candy striper while a freshman in high school. “This was always my hospital,” she says. “It has taken care of everyone in my family. I even had my appendix taken out here.” Her subsequent journey through Columbia University, New York Medical College and a three-year residency in dermatology, she says, all began “in my impressionable years, growing up around the Medical Center.” Recently, she completed a 10-year term as Chief of the Department of Dermatology at EHMC and has been named to the America’s Top Doctors Consumer Guide, as well as New York Magazine’s “Top Doctors” list many times. From her unique vantage point, Dr. Scherl has watched EHMC “grow into a major Medical Center. Today, EHMC has tremendous reach in terms of helping the community.” Soon after founding a dermatology practice in Tenafly more than 20 years ago, Dr. Scherl began supporting the EHMC Foundation by participating in special events. In 2015, she joined Physician Partners with a gift to the Annual Fund. “You really have to be more than just a doctor to be part of making EHMC successful in serving the community,” she says. “I can give my skills and my time. I gladly do all of that, but in 2016, we all need to open our wallets, as well. As doctors, we Scherls go back a long time. Supporting our Medical Center is a responsibility.”

With donor investments, more patients have access to world class healthcare close to home.

Facilities & Technology Your gifts deliver specialized care, second to none. Enthusiastic support for Transforming the Future: Our Campaign for Englewood

Hospital and Medical Center has helped more people find the specialized care they need, close to home. Donations from more than 200 friends and benefactors have raised $25 million, more than half of the Campaign’s $50 million goal. These commitments have enabled EHMC to build capacity, enhance facilities and invest in state-of-the-art technology to ensure our shared communities have access to care and expertise that is second to none. The transformation is well underway. In 2015, The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center, a nationally recognized “gold standard” cancer treatment model, doubled its size within the Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center. This growth meets a critical need in our area by accommodating more women with rapid, same-day diagnosis, advanced technology and a personalized treatment plan. Not long after the public launch of Transforming the Future in June, the generosity of dedicated benefactors brought the Graf Center for Integrative Medicine to life. The integrative medicine and therapies offered at this innovative Center are helping patients diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses achieve optimal

To sum it up, “EHMC is truly a jewel of the community.”

health and healing. Campaign giving is also transforming the treatment of acute and chronic conditions through investment in new technologies. The Coe Radiation Oncology Center installed a second Varian TrueBeam™ in 2015, expanding the Medical Center’s ability to accommodate more cancer patients and provide radiation treatments with advanced precision and speed. The addition of 3-Tesla MRI allows clinicians the highest anatomical detail anywhere, which translates into a faster diagnosis and a better experience for patients. Improvements made possible by the Capital Campaign are a powerful sign of EHMC’s commitment to excellence, and Transforming the Future has captured the attention of donors, volunteers, patients, friends and neighbors who have a renewed sense of pride in their community’s hospital. As Norman Bartner, MD, a retired physician who recently sought treatment at EHMC, noted in a letter to President and CEO Warren Geller, the accomplishments of the Medical Center “resonate loudly” because they impacted every step in his Circle of Care. “EHMC was a winner in every aspect,” says Dr. Bartner. “If you have to go to the hospital, Englewood is the place to go.”

23% Making an Investment in Her Community “I know you from somewhere…” For Kellyanne Conway, “somewhere…” is probably your favorite network or cable news program, where the lawyer, political advisor and founder of The Polling Company is frequently featured commenting on high-profile contests. You may also know her face from seeing her at EHMC. As the mother of four active children, she says, “We have been faithful patrons of the Emergency Care Center. When we have had children in need of stitches or a bone reset, the care we have received has been compassionate and full of warmth. They make children feel welcome and unintimidated. It has been so gratifying. We have been impressed with the Medical Center, from the folks who greet us at the front desk to the cafeteria and gift shop, to the specialist treating us. Everyone has shown the same level of compassion and professionalism.”

private rooms opened in the new Wilson Kaplen Infusion Center — with a total of 40 private rooms planned — for the best in patient comfort and privacy.

Kellyanne and her husband, George Conway, Alpine residents, have generously supported Transforming the Future: Our Campaign for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. “From your first breath until your final days, EHMC is an excellent investment. You can literally see how your money is helping to grow and expand the care provided in your area,” she says. “It is important to us that members of our community have access to first-class healthcare without going over a bridge or through a tunnel.” Mrs. Conway has a long-term vision for her community’s Medical Center. “We hope EHMC will continue to evolve into a place where people can go when they are sick, but also to prevent them from becoming sick,” she says. “We see it as a growing center for holistic health and preventive care — a place where people can seek answers and solutions about self-directed preventive care so they are less likely to face a health crisis.” To sum it up, “EHMC is truly a jewel of the community.” 9
