Recognized by the U.S. Congress, The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center is a model for the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.
At the core of EHMC’s mission is the steadfast commitment to listening and understanding our patients’ needs. That translates into the progressive delivery of many innovative services and patient experience enhancements vital to the health of our community. Nowhere is commitment to patients more evident than within the walls of The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center. Through listening, we understand that waiting for medical test results can feel like an eternity, often adding to patient stress and anxiety. This past year, the Breast Center enhanced its services to provide real-time mammogram results. This allows women to receive their results, and in some instances follow-up screening, in the same visit.
There is an increased level of comfort for women who walk through the doors of The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center, and that is most definitely by design. From the intake team to skilled radiologists to top-notch physicians and nurses, our team of passionate caregivers collectively make it a priority to provide an unparalleled level of convenient, personalized and comprehensive clinical care. Yes, you can! Women can access a best-in-class team of breast disease medical experts, right here, close to home.

ON INNOVATION Englewood Hospital and Medical Center’s Department of Surgery stands at the forefront of innovation that is revolutionizing the way care is delivered for patients with complex and serious illnesses. Advancing our position as a regional leader relies on an unmatched ability to provide clinical excellence, expertise and improved patient outcomes. For our surgical teams, this is supported with groundbreaking technology and made possible through generous donor giving. Thanks to laparoscopic and endoscopic equipment, video towers and robotics, EHMC surgeons operate with better visualization, enhanced precision and greater dexterity. They treat a broad range of diseases and disorders, many of which are extremely complex, delivering value-based, individualized care to patients.

An innovative EHMC community outreach and speaker program series provides much-needed support, access and education to those suffering with mental illness.

Approximately 60 million Americans – or one in four adults – will suffer from mental illness at some point in their lives. An aging population, drug addiction crises and increased instances of depression across all demographics create a critical area of concern. Our local statistics align with these national trends and additional clinical, support and educational services are needed. In a recent Community Health Needs Assessment study conducted by Bergen County to focus on the health status and needs of our communities, behavioral health was identified as a leading concern. In response, EHMC is furthering a commitment to expand and integrate core Behavioral Health services throughout our shared communities.
Among recently deployed programs is EHMC’s Behavioral Health Community Series: Stigma Free Initiative. Through free workshops, symposiums and expert-led Town Hall forums, this program series addresses common behavioral health challenges, including dementia and Alzheimer’s, suicide, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, substance abuse and bereavement. Support from The Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust and other philanthropic partners enabled the successful development of this, and many other, noteworthy programs and services that deliver support, access and education for patients and families. With the steadfast generosity of our donors, yes, we are making a significant impact in addressing the concern of behavioral health in our communities.

MATCHING GIFT CHALLENGE Yes, I will! Hundreds of donors answered the call when asked to participate in an exciting Matching Gift Challenge aimed to grow The Englewood Fund, a main source of annual support that helps deliver vital health services to our community. With just several weeks remaining in 2017, the Foundation launched the My Life, My Gift Campaign and set the bar high with a goal to raise $375,000 by December 31. Challenge donors committed to match every contribution, dollar for dollar, for a potential impact of $750,000. Our donors did not disappoint. One by one, you said YES to the challenge. By the close of the Campaign, your generosity propelled us over the top – exceeding the goal by 30% with 367 gifts totaling $490,757! With the multiplier effect in full force, your gifts grew to an extraordinary total of $865,757. Thank you for your support to help ensure Englewood Hospital and Medical Center remains the region’s leading provider of quality, compassionate healthcare.

Over 175 friends and supporters joined the EHMC Foundation on April 6 for the first Breakfast Club of 2017, featuring conversation with International Consultant on Gender Violence, Lauren Hersh Proceeds helped provide ongoing training and education for EHMC’s emergency staff who treat victims of domestic and sexual abuse.
Guest speaker and New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank headlined The Breakfast Club’s gathering on December 1 with over 130 guests in attendance. Proceeds raised from this special event helped support behavioral health initiatives at EHMC. 13

Fourteen weeks pregnant with her first child, Carolina was diagnosed with cervical cancer. For Carolina and her husband, life turned upside down. The dreams they shared for their baby and soon-to-be family of three came to an abrupt halt. In 2017, The Commission on Cancer awarded the Lefcourt Family Cancer Treatment and Wellness Center with a three-year silver level accreditation.

The EHMC Foundation hosted Be Mindful, a benefit for the Graf Center for Integrative Medicine, on November 14, drawing a crowd of more than 350 supporters and raising over $275,000! It was a night filled with friendship and music as guests danced and sang along with musician Michael Franti!
Nearly 200 guests gathered on April 24 for EHMC Foundation’s Heel the Soul benefit. The evening featured a special performance from the cast of Broadway’s Kinky Boots, the 2013 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, and raised over $80,000 to benefit the program.

The Foundation’s largest event of the year was held on June 17 at the NJPAC to honor James Klein, MD and Thomas C. Senter, Esq. for their philanthropic leadership and featured a live performance by multi-platinum singer/songwriter Gavin DeGraw.
GOLF CLASSIC The 2017 Golf Classic, held on October 2 at the Ridgewood Country Club, stands as the Foundation’s most successful golf outing to date, with $300,000 raised to benefit programs and services for patients and families at the Medical Center.

One of our patients recently celebrated her 100th birthday, and her daughter says that our surgeons gave her mom ‘a new lease on life.’ I see very sick patients who, once they recover, return to the hospital and ask how they can give back – how they can say ‘yes.’ Some of them are now volunteers, ambassadors and benefactors. That’s when we know we’ve done it right. When we’ve cared for a patient and they felt so deeply moved by our team that they want to help us help the next patient.”
