Your generosity in 2015 gave flight to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center’s most ambitious goals. We introduced new technology, debuted state-of-the-art infrastructure and opened the door to new programs and services urgently needed in our community. This incredible growth did not go unnoticed, with 284,070 patients making EHMC their hospital of choice this past year. Along the way, our clinical teams earned top marks from leading independent ratings organizations including the Leapfrog Group, Healthgrades and Carechex. Most recently, EHMC earned national recognition for excellence in nursing from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program®, marking its fourth consecutive recognition. These achievements are as much yours as they are ours. Tonight, we proudly celebrate the forward-thinkers, the go-getters and the dreamers who helped carry the Medical Center to new, bolder heights in healthcare. Our patients, now more than ever before, can remain close to home with the confidence that EHMC will deliver clinical outcomes that are nothing short of outstanding. Pa Monaha Pat Monahan is the GRAMMY-winning, multi-platinum-selling lead singer of San Francisco rock band, Train. Originally from Erie, PA, Monahan has called California home for decades and first began singing in coffeehouses around the Bay Area in 1993. Since then he’s gone on to found and lead Train to success. The band has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, more than 30 million tracks, with multiple platinum/ gold citations, including three GRAMMY awards, two Billboard Music Awards and dozens of other honors. Additionally, Monahan partakes in other ventures outside of music with Train's award-winning Save Me, San Francisco Wine Co. Proceeds from the wine support Family House, a San Francisco charity that supports families of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Train’s latest project, Does Led Zeppelin II, a cover album in tribute of their favorite band, also sees 100% of the band’s proceeds going to Family House.
Mark Sha iro, M D “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle A radiologist can spend long hours in a dark room reading and analyzing countless scans and X-rays. It might sound like a solitary process, but one only has to meet Mark Shapiro, MD to learn that radiology is simply not a one-man show. Under his leadership, the Radiology Department stands as a central hub of expertise and knowledge that impacts every patient’s experience throughout Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Dr. Shapiro arrived at EHMC in 1994 and colleagues quickly recognized him for his unparalleled commitment to delivering the highest quality medical experience to the patients behind the images that he so carefully examines. He began his career at EHMC as an attending radiologist and was appointed Chief of Radiology in 2001 — a post he continues to hold. Universally regarded by his peers for his leadership, Dr. Shapiro has helped to usher new technology and practices that are changing the way we treat patients at EHMC. He also serves as Medical Director of AMI of Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Always one to lead by example, Dr. Shapiro mentors his colleagues and inspires and promotes a culture of philanthropy throughout our shared communities. His consummate drive for excellence transcends the clinical suite, with Dr. Shapiro lending support to a host of philanthropic initiatives in support of the Medical Center. He joined the Englewood Health System and EHMC Board in 2014 and currently serves as a Vice Chair of Transforming the Future: Our Campaign for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. An avid athlete, Dr. Shapiro plays tennis and will participate in his eighth marathon later this year. He and his wife, Carolyn, live in Cresskill. They are the proud parents of Sam and Danielle.
Mark and Bet Metz er “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” – Albert Einstein Upon entering the home of Mark and Beth Metzger, one is quick to notice the many works of art gracefully adorning the walls. Abstracts, watercolors and photographs — each piece tells a story and reflects the many interests that the Metzgers share. Their most noble commitment, however, is a shared desire of discovering opportunities that will help their communities to thrive and grow. Over the years, the Metzgers sowed an extensive network for good that includes active participation on local boards and leadership-level philanthropic support of local organizations, including Englewood Hospital and Medical Center. Their legacy of philanthropy at EHMC spans nearly two decades with the couple pledging support to capital campaigns, special events and other initiatives. Mark, who retired from the financial services sector in 2001, served as Trustee on the EHMC Board from 2001–2015 and the Englewood Health System Board from 2005–2015. Beth, a former nursing professional, currently serves on the Medical Center’s Bioethics Committee. Beth and Mark are lifelong residents of Bergen County and have called the City of Englewood home since 1984. Widely respected for their commitment to promoting health, education and community improvement and development initiatives, the Metzgers’ efforts have had a lasting impact in our region. Together, Beth and Mark raised three daughters: Marisa McDonald, Naomi Daniels and Victoria Metzger. They are proud grandparents to seven grandchildren.

aybe it might seem a bit odd to quote from a 1954 movie called “The Caine Mutiny,” in relation to commenting on the overall total compassionate care at EHMC, and its mission that extends to healing the mind, body and spirit of people entering its doors, and the guiding spirit that determines that care. But to me, it seemed apropos of EHMC and what it strives to do. The quote below is given by Lieutenant Commander Philip Francis Queeg, of the United States Navy, in relation to the standards of performance delivery that HE required aboard his ship. Maybe the same might be said for what the guiding mission statement of EHMC’s level of patient care goal is as well: “Aboard my ship, excellent performance is standard, Standard performance is sub-standard, and sub-standard performance is not permitted to exist.” Admittedly, human beings delivering care in a hospital setting are as HUMAN as the ones that receive it, and no one is perfect. But, if the intent and guiding principle is to reach for a personal best each and every time that care is delivered, then EHMC is not only meeting, but exceeding patient care delivery standards. And THAT is to be commended.
