TABLE OF CONTENTS
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
When chaplain Art Callaham first arrived, he installed a new lectionary for the School, a pre-selected collection of scriptural readings from the Bible that we use in daily worship. It is our guide as we make our way through the Old and New Testaments each year in daily Chapel, aligning our daily Chapel readings with the School calendar and the current season of the liturgical year. We begin our school year, as you might imagine, with the Book of Genesis, the origin of the world and of the people of Israel.
The creation story is an inspiration; many creation stories are. The creation of EHS is very much that, as told by Bishop Benitez in his final Chapel talk, still posted on the School’s website. It is called “The Story of EHS: Alleluia, Hot Dog and Hooray,” and it outlines strong foundation on which we build each year, aiming to live our mission every day.
Last year was a success by virtually any measure. Thank you to those who contributed so generously and in so many ways to make it so. We could not do what we do without your volunteering to serve in myriad ways, giving so generously of your time, and stretching to donate your resources as you did. The annual Report on Philanthropy recognizes many of those accomplishments as representative of all of them, impossible to recount in full.
We begin this school year 806 students strong including 221 new students, 209 of whom are freshmen coming from 41 different middle schools. Our twelve new upperclassmen come from ten different high schools, and our new students collectively represent 39 different zip codes. We have 102 teaching faculty, 100 of whom are full time. They teach 160 courses in our seven period day across 498 sections, the average size of which is 14 students. We continue to offer the best of the small school in terms of class size and we are big enough to accommodate the beginner and the expert across all Four Pillars.
Best of all, we continue to work across the School every day to best live our mission. Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees Haag Sherman, in his letter within, outlines some of the plans we have as we begin our third year with 800 students, our target student body and the population for which we’ve built out the campus over the last decade or so. The Board of Trustees expects to publish its vision for the next five years in early 2023, building on the foundation of our remarkable origin story and our first forty years. With your help, we will then begin to bring those plans to life for the next forty and beyond.
Thank you for the part you have played in the life of EHS and for the part you prepare to play this year. We couldn’t do it without you.
Go Knights, Ned Smith, Head of School

FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHAIR
“Good fortune is what happens when opportunity meets with planning.” – Thomas A. Edison
Episcopal High School is a relatively young institution, yet it has become one of the most renowned and respected independent schools in the greater Houston community and is well positioned to be a beacon among its counterparts on a national level. The Board of Trustees believes this success results from the vision established by the Founders, which is based on the Episcopal faith, the Four Pillars, and a commitment to serving a wide breadth of students, each with unique talents, skills and backgrounds. Given this foundation and the stability of our institution, we are fortunate to be served by a long-tenured administration, faculty, and staff dedicated to the Four Pillars—academics, arts athletics, and religion—who serve an inquisitive, distinctive, and curious collective of young learners who weave the fabric of our School. Since we are located in one of the most diverse, fastest-growing cities in the United States, our families come from a variety of backgrounds and are united in their willingness to give their time and resources to help EHS reach its highest potential.
Just as we have done since 1983, we must maintain our mission and values, while planning for the future. That’s what leaders do, and we believe that Episcopal should not just be a leader in Houston, but also a leader by example throughout the country.
This is why the Board of Trustees and the administration are undertaking an extensive review, modification, and approval of Episcopal’s strategic plan this fall. Our efforts will be comprehensive and include a 360 review of the School, including parent surveys that will provide valuable insight into our planning. Our goal is to maintain the “Episcopal experience” for our students –which has served us so well for more than thirty-five years – while charting a path for the future.
As a board member and current parent, these areas of the plan—and our School’s future—resonate with me:
• Religion Pillar – This is central to our School and identity. We too often see schools with religious beginnings stray and become more secular. We will continue to chart a course that ensures that religion is central to the Episcopal experience.
• Academics/Technology – While we want to retain the Episcopal experience, we also want to be at the vanguard of educational progress. Technology (artificial intelligence) will transform education, allowing us to better understand how each child learns. This will enable us to continue to adapt our teaching to individual learning needs and deliver a superior, tailored education. We have always led on the technology front and must continue to do so.
Governance – Those steeped in governance understand the age-old adage and principal dichotomy. The board’s function is to govern and provide a strong connection between the community and the School and to ensure we never stray from our mission. It starts with board composition, guidelines (e.g., bylaws) and a clear understanding of roles and duties.
• Affordability – This has been a constant challenge for private schools and one that is of particular importance in what may well be an era of higher inflation.
This brings me back to the parents. We need your continued participation and feedback, starting with the parent survey this fall. Beyond that, we welcome your thoughts, comments, and guidance for the future. There is no better way for us to effectively govern the School than to hear from parents. So, we encourage you to provide us feedback and continue your involvement. It is a key ingredient in what makes Episcopal so unique.
Kind regards,
A. Haag Sherman, Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees

OUR FISCAL YEAR
Episcopal High School operates debt‑free and is an excellent steward of every tuition and donated dollar. Philanthropy through annual giving and the Endowment covers about 12 percent of the School’s annual operating expenses. Exceeding regional standards, Episcopal High School allocates at least 10 percent of our operating budget to financial aid. Lastly, as a strategic goal to attract and retain the best faculty and staff throughout the Four Pillars of academics, arts, athletics, and religion, compensation is the largest expense item in our budget.

ALUMNI
EHS Alums,
It is hard to believe my tenure as President of the Alumni Association Directors' Council has come to an end. The 2021-22 school year saw a return to campus, and we were incredibly grateful!
From Homecoming, a hybrid in-person and virtual Alumni Leadership Day, Alumni Holiday Lunch, and Alumni Weekend, thank you to all the alumni who gave their time and efforts to EHS this year and made our events successful!
Please stay connected with your EHS family. I encourage each of you to find an event next year to attend on campus. Whether you stop by campus for a visit and break cookie, reconnect with a former teacher at the Holiday Lunch, attend an arts or athletic event, or spend time at a reunion with your fellow alumni, there is a great event on campus you will enjoy! You will be impressed by the developments at EHS and proud that it is still strongly rooted in the Four Pillars!
Our community has a unique culture, and an active alumni network makes EHS what it is today and what it will be in the future! It would not be the amazing place it is without your support! I hope to see you around campus soon!
Go Knights!

AUCTION 2022: OH, WHAT A KNIGHT!
On Friday, February 18, 2022, the EHS community gathered to celebrate Episcopal High School’s 38th Auction, Oh, What a Knight! Co Chairs, Mary Ellen (Wright) Bos ’93, Anne Freeman, and Allison Jordan, along with countless volunteers and generous donors, raised vital revenue for the School’s operating budget.
The evening took on a new format, post pandemic, with all silent items being sold in our Online Auction. The Night Of event consisted of a jubilant cocktail hour before moving into the Ballroom for dinner and Live Auction. Guests enjoyed a wonderful dinner prepared by Jackson & Company; bid high in our Live Auction with energetic Auctioneer, Johnny Bravo; and danced the night away with tunes spinning by DJ Senega. During the Pillars Up portion of the evening, the EHS community raised funds supporting the Four Pillars of EHS.
With Oh, What a Knight! and Online Auction complete, EHS is gearing up for Auction 2023. Chairs Rebecca Martin, Cara Michael and Mindy Rippstein promise an unforgettable evening as we celebrate The Greatest Knight. Save the date for February 24, 2023!

PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Getting back to “normal” was the theme, and the Parents Association surpassed that expectation under the leadership of President Caroline Finkelstein. Our committees, chaired by EHS moms, did a wonderful job preparing for the 2021-22 school year. The connection started early in June as our Mentor Mom group onboarded our newest Knights, helping them acclimate to the EHS community. We began the school year with the Parent Volunteer Rally introducing our parents to the numerous volunteer opportunities. The year ended with the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon in May. Our moms put their heart and soul into making every event memorable and fun.
Our EHS talented moms' creativity was on full display as they prepared for Break Cookies, Spirit Treats, Library help, Staff Relief (Crain/Convent Help Desks), and the HANDS group assisting with mailing, labeling, and collating for the Development/ Auction Office. They could be seen on campus putting up Academic Honors flyers, decorating for the holidays, delivering baked goods for evening events, and planning for luncheons and special occasions throughout the year. Our Moms in Prayer and Care Committee continue to serve the entire EHS community through prayer and deed.
Poinsettia Sale, Concessions, YEES Committee, and Faculty & Staff Appreciation events are organized, planned, and verified to make sure that all involved have a wonderful experience.
Our campus continues to be a space where our students, faculty, staff, and parents strive every day to make the Episcopal experience exciting, happy, engaging, and wide-ranging. Thank you to all of our moms committed to making that happen.

DADS CLUB
The Episcopal High School Dads Club completed another productive year. This organization provided financial support, guidance, service, and spirit to the EHS family. The success of this group is made possible by our wonderful EHS dads and their commitment to our students, faculty, and staff. The annual golf outing is our main fundraiser and the 2022 event broke records in attendance, as well as, continued to offer our community another opportunity to create fun and fellowship. EHS offers many opportunities for our dads and we welcome their support within the school community. We thank all the current members and welcome the new students and parents for the coming school year.
Under the leadership of President Joe Bob Edwards, this organization provided financial and volunteer support for the entire Episcopal community. This year the EHS Dads Club helped fund the Benitez Chapel video system, Vitruve Velocity Based Training Equipment, and the Advisory Character Strong Program. This group continues to financially support Field Knight, "Got Blue" T-shirts, Faculty/Staff/Student appreciation events, Pillar Support (Academics, Religion, Fine Arts and Athletics), Student/Parent Handbook and Directory, Pink Ribbon Night, Challenger Football/Basketball, College Counseling Hospitality, Sporting Clay event, EHS spirit club, and whatever needs the School asks of them.
Since 1994, the Episcopal High School Dads Club has given back over $2,300,000 to our community.
Past, present, and future, our dads will continue to be an integral part of the student/ parent experience for every EHS family.

ENDOWMENT UPDATE
The Endowment Fund serves as a long-term investment vehicle for Episcopal High School. The basic purpose is to achieve long-term appreciation of principal and to provide distribution to help fund financial aid and the operation of the School's properties and programs as directed by the Episcopal High School Endowment Fund Board.
The EHS Endowment Fund Board continues to provide careful oversight for the School’s longterm assets. This committed board governing these assets and investments works diligently and strategically with the investment consultant to maintain a strong diversified portfolio. In addition to the basic purpose, the focus continues to be long-term growth to support the School’s operations, direction, and mission. This year, two pivotal board members, Lynda Knapp Underwood and Victor Kormeier were both appointed Trustees Emeritus. Both Lynda and Vic were members of the founding boards of the School and the Endowment. Over their years of unparalleled service, they have been champions of EHS and careful stewards of the Endowment Fund. EHS would not have matured and prospered without their wise counsel and steady leadership. It is an honor to work with Lynda and Vic; we know that both will continue to provide invaluable guidance and oversight in the seasons to come. Additionally, in spring 2022, the board appointed Clay Manley as a term Elected Trustee and advisory member of the Investment Subcommittee. Clay’s service as a former trustee of the School and chair of the Finance Committee (notably starting during a challenging 2020-2021 school year) makes him exceptionally well-positioned to support the Endowment Board in his new role. We are thrilled for the opportunity to continue to work alongside Clay and grateful to him for his continued support of the School.
As of June 30, 2022, the Endowment Fund ended with a balance of $48 million. In addition, the Endowment Fund has future pledges that bring the total assets of the endowment to $50 million. In 2021-2022, the endowment contributed $1.2 million to the School’s annual operating budget of $32.3 million, and the board is pleased that the Endowment Fund could make such a significant contribution to the daily operating needs of the School. Ongoing growth ensures an affordable, sustainable future, and added contributions provide opportunities for additional investment diversification to allow investment in areas which should increase returns, while reducing downside risk in some scenarios.
The Endowment Fund provides essential stability during the current challenging times. The present economic market suggests that when tense times turn to tough times with high inflation and the looming threat of recession, the resulting uncertainty stirs broad-based repricing of risk. Although the overall stock and bond markets were lower as of June 30, 2022, (with some down greater than 20%), the Endowment Fund's portfolio, while impacted, performed in line with its diversified portfolio benchmark with a calendar year-to-date loss of 15% and a 13% loss for the fiscal year.
Finally, in fiscal year 2022, an additional $0.726 million was raised toward the endowment. As the board approved EHS’s newest campaign in November 2021, a $10 million endowment goal has been set through that effort with plans to complete fundraising efforts by 2025. Episcopal High School’s Endowment Fund welcomes contributions and pledges of any amount. The Endowment Fund is a perfect way to preserve a donor’s charitable intent for generations to come. Should you wish to learn more about endowment giving, please feel free to contact Allie Nikolaisen, Chief Development Officer at anikolaisen@ehshouston.org. Allie would be happy to discuss endowment giving opportunities in more detail.
