OF CONTENTS
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear EHS Family,
We begin the new school year, our fourth year at 800 students, stronger than we ended the last and with a deeper appreciation for those who have gone before us. It is hard to believe, but our current seniors never knew EHS as it existed before the pandemic. Theirs really is a new normal!
This year’s Report on Philanthropy memorializes all those whose hard work and dedication ensure that this new normal meets the needs of the moment and that EHS continues to stand out locally, nationally, and globally. And we do! We are grateful for all who have gone before, the foundation they have laid, while continuing to consider how we, the beneficiaries of those blessings, can contribute to making our School and our world even better.
Outgoing board chair Haag Sherman highlights in his letter the stability that marks the EHS faculty and staff, ensuring that we thrive through transitions such as the departure of long-time faculty members Kim Randolph and John Colello whose successors are the newly installed Associate Head of School for Academics and Student Life The Reverend Tyler Montgomery and longtime EHS teacher and coach Steve Leisz. We capitalize on our strong pool of talented long-time teachers while selectively looking to add strength from outside those ranks.
And of course, this year begins the tenure of new Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees Richard Howell ’01, our first alumnus to serve in the position, and a worthy successor to Haag, appreciative of our strong and faithful history and eager to build on that history for an even stronger future. Richard saw the School through its most recent strategic planning process, culminating in the Strategic Plan 2023. Alums comprise nearly one-third of the Board of Trustees that will enliven this plan as the next generation of school leaders (page 24), taking up the mantle of those who went before. And you only need glance at our latest list of Knight Arrivals on page 33 to recognize the growing strength of our alumni body and its keen interest in the School’s future.
There are many accomplishments to celebrate as we begin our new year – witness Karson’s individual accomplishments on our cover photograph, note our collecting the SPC Athletic Directors’ Cup as the strongest athletic program in the conference, recall the sold-out high-octane run of our last school musical, Mama Mia, or note the list of college acceptances on page 54 or the list of scholarships granted to the class of 2023 on page 56. They speak volumes and illustrate the power of EHS, as it was last year and as it will be going forward.
We are excited for that future and grateful for all that you have done to make it possible.
Go Knights, Ned Smith, Head of School

FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHAIR
The past year was one to be celebrated – for it marked a return to normalcy for Episcopal High School in many respects. In particular, the 2022-2023 school year represented the first post-Covid year without any type of restrictions and for that, we are all grateful. However, in many respects, the school year had a remarkable degree of activity and even change – perhaps as we made up for lost time.
As you may recall, a significant undertaking last year was a 360 review of Episcopal, which was undertaken in conjunction with the development of a strategic plan adopted by the board. The 360 covered all aspects of Episcopal and was conducted by Independent School Management (ISM) –one of the of the most respected consulting firms covering preparatory schools across the nation. The foundation of the 360 was surveys by parents, students, faculty, the board and senior leadership, and parent focus groups. The goal was to get a fulsome assessment of Episcopal from our community to guide the board in its strategic planning.
Exceptional Survey Results
Our consultant said that Episcopal’s scores were the best ISM had seen in its 47-year history. Episcopal had high satisfaction levels across all constituents – a product of decades-long hard work by the entire community.
The surveys indicated that Episcopal has an incredibly involved community. Parents give their time, talents, and treasure and are involved with the School. Our students are even more engaged. The Four Pillars are not just a catch-phrase but a passion, and start with daily worship in our Chapel where our students, faculty, and administration come together as one. Our students support one another – they attend plays and sporting events at levels not seen at our peer schools. Our students love Episcopal and it shows in their smiling faces.
Our faculty received universally high marks from parents and students alike. Our faculty care not only about our students’ academic performance, but also their well-being. This care does not end upon graduation; our faculty is in it for the long haul – maintaining relationships with students well beyond graduation. These relationships bring our former students back to campus – time and again –and make Episcopal a special place.
Given this community, Episcopal has emerged as a destination for the best faculty and staff in Houston and beyond. Head of School Ned Smith is to be commended for instituting best practices over his tenure, drawing from his deep experience at some of the most prestigious preparatory schools in the country. This has allowed Episcopal to attract, screen, and retain top faculty members.
Saying Good-Bye to Nancy, Kim, and John
During his tenure, Ned has been ably assisted by an experienced senior leadership team – albeit one that is under transition. Over the past two years, Episcopal has seen the retirement of Nancy Eisenberg, Kim Randolph, and John Colello, with nearly 100 years at Episcopal among them. Their contribution cannot be appreciated enough. However, Episcopal is not standing still, and Ned has been able to blend existing talent with the next generation of school leaders to continue Episcopal’s enviable upward trend.
The Alumni Are Coming!
Happy students lead to engaged alumni. And one of the most powerful trends for Episcopal is the emergence of its alumni base. There is no area of Episcopal that will not be impacted by our growing and enthusiastic alumni base. Today, alumni represent over 30% of the members of our board. Further, my successor, Richard Howell ’01, is the first Episcopal alumnus to serve as Board Chair. He is young and brilliant and indicative of the alumni that Episcopal is producing.
We will see many more alumni serving as Board Chairs, board members, and school leaders in the years to come. Further, more and more of our student body will be legacies, and the demand for admission to Episcopal – already at record levels - will only continue to increase.
In closing, these are all signs of a healthy, happy, and thriving Episcopal community – one of which we are all proud to be a member!
A. Haag Sherman, Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees

Episcopal High School operates debt-free and is an excellent steward of every tuition and donated dollar. Philanthropy through annual giving and the Endowment covers about 12 percent of the School’s annual operating expenses. Exceeding regional standards, Episcopal High School allocates at least 10 percent of our operating budget to financial aid. Lastly, as a strategic goal to attract and retain the best faculty and staff throughout the Four Pillars of academics, arts, athletics, and religion, compensation is the largest expense item in our budget. 7
“EHS has been a part of my whole life. My older sister went here. I’ve made amazing friends. It’s been great.”

AUCTION 2023: THE GREATEST KNIGHT
On February 24, 2023, the EHS community gathered to celebrate Episcopal High School’s 39th Auction, The Greatest Knight Co-Chairs Rebecca Martin, Cara Michael, and Mindy Rippstein, along with countless volunteers and generous donors, raised vital revenue for the School’s operating budget.
The evening began with a cocktail hour as guests arrived before moving into the Ballroom for dinner and Live Auction. As guests were seated, they were treated to a wonderful performance by Impact, before enjoying a fabulous dinner prepared by Jackson & Company. The Live Auction was again led by energetic Auctioneer Johnny Bravo, followed by dancing into the night. During the Pillars Up portion of the evening, the EHS community raised funds supporting the Four Pillars of EHS.
With The Greatest Knight Auction complete, EHS is gearing up for Auction 2024. Chairs Amy Airhart, Tricia Georgiou, and Tiffany Utterson are looking forward to a swinging good time as we celebrate A Masterful Knight. Save the date February 23, 2024.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Under the leadership of Parent Association President Kim Van Gundy, this organization began its work in May 2022 preparing for events, luncheons, speakers, informative talks/discussions, Auction 2023, and many more activities that would not be possible without this group of talented women.
As the summer began, several committees were at work meeting, creating, and planning for the school year. The Parent-to-Parent Committee and Mentor Moms welcomed new families and helped make their transition from middle school to high school as stress-free as possible. They were there to answer questions and prepare the families as they entered the EHS community.
Parent representatives from each class helped plan fundraising events specific to each class. Poinsettia sales and concessions raised funds and helped the Freshman Class come together as a group. Homecoming 2022, A Knight at the Luau, was a resounding success for the Sophomore Class. The Senior Style Show, The Stars at Knight are Big and Bright, Deep in the Heart of EHS, featured the artistry and style of the senior class as they walked the runway.
The Academic, Athletic, Religion and Arts Pillar support committees supported, encouraged, and recognized student participation and achievement. Our EHS moms’ participation was on full display with break cookies, spirit treats, library help, staff relief (Crain/Convent Help Desks), and the HANDS group assisting with mailing, labeling, and collating for the Development/Auction Office. Volunteers could be seen on campus putting up academic honors flyers, decorating for the holidays, delivering baked goods for evening events, and planning for luncheons and special occasions throughout the year. Our Moms in Prayer and Care Committee continued to serve the entire EHS Community through prayer and deed.
The 2023-24 Parents Association will be in good hands, not missing a beat under the guidance of 2023-24 President Caren McKinnie.

MOMENTS
Angelica Vella ʼ23 shares a heartwarming moment after taking that exciting walk across the graduation stage.
DADS CLUB
The Episcopal High School Dads Club, in its 37th year of operation, contributed financial support, volunteer hours, friendship, and excitement to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and EHS community. The Dads Club success is highlighted by the hard work of the executive board and club members. EHS offers many opportunities for our dads, and we welcome their participation in the school community. All of these gentlemen work the entire year to provide the School with the necessary tools allowing the students to achieve and succeed. The annual Spring Golf Tournament, our main fundraiser, produced record revenues and participants. We thank all the current members and welcome the new students and parents for the coming school year.
Under the leadership and guidance of President Jeff Henningsen, the EHS Dads Club contributed over $60,000 to the School, supporting all Four Pillars and the EHS community. This year the EHS Dads Club helped fund Volleyball SPC Nets, One Way Custom Shooting Machine, and new Cameras/Lenses for the Photo Journalism Department. This group continues to financially support Field Knight, Got Blue T-shirts, Faculty/Staff/Student appreciation events, Pillar Support (Academics, Religion, Arts, and Athletics), Pink Ribbon Night, Challenger Football/Basketball, College Counseling Hospitality, Fall Welcome Dads Club Event, EHS Spirit Club, and needs requested by the School. Additionally, the Dads Club retired their $250,000 commitment for the new Dean John Colello Press Box with the dedication in the Fall of 2023.
The Dads Club is an organization that is successful because of its “hands on” philosophy. The dads' personal involvement at EHS has proven to be a wonderful addition to the School and campus life. Connelly McGreevy ’89, president for the 2023-2024 school year, is ready to meet the challenge of leading this group and its members to another successful year benefiting the EHS community. The 2023-24 board agreed to fund the purchase of a new school bus to be used by the entire EHS community. The pledge of $110,000 will be paid over the next four years.

ENDOWMENT UPDATE
The Endowment Fund serves as a long-term investment vehicle for Episcopal High School. The basic purpose is to achieve long-term appreciation of principal and to provide distribution to help fund financial aid and the operation of the School's properties and programs as directed by the Episcopal High School Endowment Fund Board.
The EHS Endowment Fund Board continues to provide careful oversight for the School’s long term assets. This committed board governing these assets and investments works diligently and strategically with the investment consultant to maintain a strong diversified portfolio. In addition to the basic purpose, the focus continues to be long-term growth to support the School’s operations, direction, and mission. This past spring the board elected Clay Manley as secretary and added Michael Mithoff as a term member to the board. The board also appointed Larry Neuhaus as Trustee Emeritus. Larry has served the board as secretary for many years and has dedicated many years to its stewardship and growth.
As of June 30, 2023, the Endowment Fund ended with a balance of $53 million. The Endowment Fund’s portfolio performed in line with its diversified portfolio benchmark with a calendar year-to-date gain of 8.6% and a 9.7% gain for the fiscal year. When received, outstanding pledges add an additional $1 million to the fund. The current capital campaign includes $10 million dedicated to the Endowment. Ongoing growth ensures an affordable, sustainable future, and added contributions provide opportunities for additional investment diversification to allow investment in areas which should increase returns, while reducing downside risk in some scenarios.
In 2022-2023, the endowment contributed $1.4 million to the School’s annual operating budget of $33.8 million, and the board is pleased that the Endowment Fund could make such a significant contribution to the daily operating needs of the School.
Episcopal High School’s Endowment Fund welcomes contributions and pledges of any amount. The Endowment Fund is a perfect way to preserve a donor’s charitable intent for generations to come. Should you wish to learn more about endowment giving, please feel free to contact Margaret Young, Chief Development Officer at myoung@ehshouston.org. Margaret would be happy to discuss endowment giving opportunities in more detail.
