On the cover: EHS community members take part in a celebratory groundbreaking of the new Visual and Performing Arts Center in December 2023.
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear EHS Family,
The 2023-2024 school year at EHS was a success by any measure, bursting with significant accomplishment across all Four Pillars and each of the School’s constituent groups. Our Founders’ dreams are a reality each and every day! This year’s Report on Philanthropy, our annual celebration of all who give to Episcopal High School of their time, talent, and treasure, marks the conclusion of the School’s fortieth year of operation.
Executive Chair of the Board Richard Howell points us forward highlighting the many ways the 2023 Strategic Plan is coming to life. Chief Development Officer Margaret Young, Endowment Board Chair Randa Duncan Williams, and Construction Committee Chair and board member Shelley Barineau share the noteworthy accomplishments of their respective bodies in support of that strategic plan. And, of course, we celebrate within the hundreds of volunteers and donors without whose strong efforts on a multitude of fronts none of this magic would be possible.
Nancy Eisenberg, former Associate Head of School, continues in this issue her important and informative chronicling of the School’s earliest years, undertaking within a recounting of the purchase of our current campus by the Diocese of Texas in 1983-84 when EHS was just a dream. Good things do come to those who wait.
There were many families who contributed to those early years, and a number of them are represented in our new class of trustees which includes alums of the earliest years of EHS as well as children of our Founders who together with our more recent additions look to lead us into our second forty years, building strength on strength. Please familiarize yourselves with them on pages 24 and 25. They ar e among those charged with living out the School’s strategic plan, the efforts to which each of us contributes every day and in so many ways.
Whether we celebrate you by name within or not, thank you for all that you do for EHS. We could not do it without you.
I look forward to welcoming you on campus soon.
Go Knights,
Ned Smith Head of School
FROM THE EXECUTIVE CHAIR
Episcopal High School opened in the fall of 1984, and our fortieth anniversary includes much to celebrate across all Four Pillars! As an alumnus and Executive Chairman of the EHS Board of Trustees, it is a joy to work hand-in-hand with our administration, board, and community.
Strategic Plan Update
In 2022, School leadership conducted surveys, interviews, and focus groups of parents, students, and teachers to assess its progress and develop a new strategic plan. EHS was and is in excellent condition, and, in March 2023, the board adopted a new six-year strategic plan to build on our strengths and pursue improvements that will help us deliver on the Mission for a new generation of students. The plan reflects twenty-three goals across five core areas: Mission, Student Life and Health, Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Leadership and Governance, and Stewardship and Facilities. In the 2023-24 school year, our board – together with School leaders – identified specific tasks and performance metrics associated with each goal and began working to implement constructive changes. This work is ongoing.
Academics
EHS is recognized by Niche as one of the five best Christian high schools in Texas. Last fall, EHS was also recognized as one of five Houston area schools to receive the College Board’s AP Platinum award. We celebrate these successes, but we also want to seize opportunities to improve. EHS is devoted to delivering a top-flight college-preparatory education for all students, challenging every student to do his or her best to grow intellectually and develop a storehouse of knowledge and skills. Our strategic plan directs the board and administration (and, ultimately, our faculty) to enhance curriculum, ensure rigorous instruction, and assess appropriate use of technology. Technology is a hot topic because it is a two-sided coin for learning. On one side, adaptive academic programs can personalize and stretch learning for each student. On the other, phones, social media, and the internet may distract, enable cheating, or impede learning. In carrying out this and other strategic plan goals, we hope to build well-rounded students who can succeed in college and beyond.
Arts
On December 14, 2023, we broke ground on the new Visual and Performing Arts Center. This facility – which will be named The Crain-Galloway Center for the Arts in honor of Lacy Crain and Joseph Galloway – increases space for our Arts Pillar programs by 52% (to 61,000 sq. ft.) and adds a performing arts venue as well as classrooms and work spaces for the performing, digital, and visual arts. We look forward to seeing the construction of the new Arts Center emerge from its foundations, and the board is excited for students to experience this wonderful space. From the first day EHS opened its doors, Founders like Mrs. Crain, School leaders, and teachers have worked to build a strong fine arts program. We’ve made a huge step toward fulfilling that dream.
Athletics
The Knights’ varsity teams won more championships this year than any year in school history. Our student-athletes won championships in football, boys and girls cross country, boys volleyball, girls and boys basketball, girls and boys soccer, softball, girls and boys track and field, and girls lacrosse. This record-breaking feat was accompanied by many of our student-athletes continuing their athletic pursuits at excellent universities including Brown, Yale, UCLA, George Mason, Florida, Ohio State, and Oregon. Most of all, we are proud that student-athletes learn enduring character lessons while achieving on-field success.
Finley ’25 and Charlotte ’27 Howell with grandparent Steve Howell and uncle and aunt Richard and Julie Howell.
Religion
The Rev. Beth Holden served as the Chaplain and then Religion Pillar leader for more than a decade. Beth retired this past May. We are so grateful to have The Rev. Art Callaham step into the role of Interim Dean of Religion as our search for the next Dean is ongoing. EHS seeks a leader who will share the Good News in Chapel and across our campus in a winsome and faithful manner. Our board also took steps to ensure Mission alignment for religion teacher hiring, which we hope will bear fruit in the future; and our clergy continue to see student interest in the voluntary faith formation program.
Mission
Every day, EHS strives to help our students fulfill their human potential and honor their duties to God and their neighbor. To more closely paraphrase our Mission, EHS is a Christian community that develops each student’s individual talents through the Four Pillars in preparation for meaningful lives in service to others. This Mission was vital in 1983 when our Founders created Episcopal to be a different kind of high school for our city, and it is even more important today. EHS’s faculty shapes our student body with this North Star in mind, and the underlying values help EHS graduates grow into adulthood as whole, courageous, truth-seeking people.
Parent Involvement
We are a much stronger school community due to the efforts of parents who volunteer, get involved through meetings, Chapels, and events, or attend games and performances. Thank you! I am especially thankful for the service during the past year of PA President Caren McKinnie, Dads Club President Connelly McGreevy, EHS Fund chairs Anna and Bret Scholtes, and Auction co-chairs Amy Airhart, Tricia Georgiou, and Tiffany Utterson. I also want to commend our Head of School for hosting a series of parent coffees during the 2023-24 school year. Ned is
approachable and accountable, and his willingness to field questions in an open forum would be unheard of in many schools. Consider attending one of these coffees next year.
Building for the Future
EHS is on the threshold of completing its 2007 campus master plan! The Arts Center, which is already under construction, and the renewed Benitez Chapel are the two remaining elements of the plan. These will ensure that we meet our promise to provide outstanding programs, instruction, and facilities across all Four Pillars. Every member of the Board of Trustees is supportive of these projects, and we are also grateful for the generous support we have received from many members of the EHS community. You can read more about the Stand for EHS campaign in the pages that follow, and we thank you in advance for your flexibility and patience with the construction process!
Prayers
Finally, I would ask that you keep EHS in your prayers and thanksgivings this coming year. Please consider saying a prayer of encouragement for our excellent teachers, for the wisdom of our leaders, for the faithful and effective delivery of our Mission, for the safety and efficiency of the construction workers on campus, and for each student’s health and well-rounded growth.
I look forward to seeing you all on campus soon!
Richard A. Howell ’01 Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees
OUR FISCAL YEAR
Episcopal High School operates debt-free and is an excellent steward of every tuition and donated dollar. Philanthropy through annual giving and the Endowment covers about 12 percent of the School’s annual operating expenses. Exceeding regional standards, Episcopal High School allocates at least 10 percent of our operating budget to financial aid. Lastly, as a strategic goal to attract and retain the best faculty and staff throughout the Four Pillars of academics, arts, athletics, and religion, compensation is the largest expense item in our budget.
“The more involved I was, the more well-rounded I became. I have felt a lot of growth over the years.”
KARA THOMAS ’24
“Being an EHS Knight means exploring what's possible, whether it be through clubs, sports, academic competitions, or beyond, even outside of school. Not only this, but to strive to excel in each thing we do for ourselves and others.”

Your gifts ensure the School’s ongoing health and growth, guarantee that all Knights receive an exemplary education, and demonstrate a commitment to service beyond oneself, just as we expect from our children. The EHS Mission would not be possible without your support–thank you.
Charged with the substantial goal of raising $1,960,000, essential for the operating budget and used during the school year, we are immensely grateful for your financial support in helping us exceed this goal. We are pleased to share the results of the 2023-2024 EHS Fund:

STEWART BLACK
Stewart Black, a fifth generation Houstonian and lifelong Episcopalian, is married to Kim Riser Black and has three daughters—Chandler ’22, a sophomore at the University of Mississippi, Audrey ’23, a freshman at the University of Texas at Austin, and Margaret ’27.
His grandparents and parents attended Christ Church Cathedral from 1938 before transferring to St. John the Divine Episcopal Church. Stewart began serving St. John’s Church as an acolyte under the Reverend Ben Benitez and continued to serve throughout his high school years. Stewart’s father, Milton Black Sr., was asked by Bishop Benitez to join the first capital campaign, whose purpose was to raise funds for the purchase of land for Episcopal High School.
Stewart graduated from Lamar High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He has had a successful career in commercial real estate and oil and gas endeavors over the years. Most recently he ran an NGL transportation and marketing company that was sold in 2019. ACQUIRING
THE PROPERTY 1982-84
Early 1982
School made an offer for the Marian High School site to the Duddleston group but could not raise the funds by the deadline.
February 9, 1983
School purchased Tract A, the north 18.9 acres plus the Chapel (see map on p. 37).
December 1983
School purchased Tracts B and C on the south side of campus, selling Tract B to the Post Oak School.
Late 1984
School purchased Tract D, the final 12 acres, including the Convent.
ACQUIRING THE PROPERTY (1982-84)
Second in the series about the founding of Episcopal High School
In early 1982, with John Bonner as chair of the steering committee, the first order of business was to find a piece of property for the new School. The ideal site was the site of the old Marian High School in Bellaire, which had closed two years earlier and was now owned by the developer Wayne Duddleston, who planned to build a $200 million office and hotel complex. With the help of Sid Smith, a parishioner at St. John the Divine and an investor on the Duddleston property, and Jack Trotter, another Duddleston investor and highly regarded business guru, “a problem-solver with an imaginative mind,” according to his obit, the Bishop’s group made an offer for the Marian site but was given only a short time (probably four to six weeks) to raise the needed $15 million, which they were unable to do. So the newly and loosely formed property committee, including Rick McCord, Larry Neuhaus, Joel Shannon, Graham Luhn, and Sid Smith, initiated the search for land for 200 students. Understanding that it had to be located near the center of a circle that encompassed Rice University, West University, Bellaire, River Oaks, Tanglewood, and Memorial, they toured the Bible University site in the Heights and the old Kinkaid School at the northwest corner of Montrose and Richmond. They also looked at some land at 610 in the Heights and at Alabama and Dunlavy where the HEB currently resides. Joel Shannon remembers that he, Neuhaus, and McCord plus the Reverend Jeff Walker, the “youngsters” in the project, got together after meetings to review the progress over drinks, dubbing themselves “The Knights of the White Magnolia.”
The ideal site was still Duddleston’s West Loop property, the site of the old Marian High School in Bellaire, but throughout 1982, Duddleston continued to battle in city council and in court with the residential City of Bellaire, which was not eager for office buildings, although the City did want tax revenue from the property. When the rental market soured, however, and Duddleston found that he could buy office buildings for 60% of the cost of building, he was open to working with the Diocese, particularly after Palmer Montessori School, which was occupying the Marian High School buildings and wanted to buy the property, was unable to raise the money. Initially, Duddleston had given the EHS group only a month or so to raise $15 million, but the second time around, he was open to giving them more time. Rumor has it that after Bellaire had given him such a hard time, he was also open to selling to a nonprofit to deny Bellaire the taxes.
So in late 1982, Bishop Benitez met with Jack Trotter about acquiring the Duddleston land for EHS. Trotter had a plan, he said, which would allow the Diocese to purchase the land and help Duddleston taxwise. Interestingly, both Trotter and Smith were involved on both sides of the transaction–as Duddleston investors and also as part of the Bishop’s group of Founders. The property on the table was Parcel A, the north 18.9 acres, and also included the Chapel. There was also an option to buy Parcels B, C, and D going forward. (See map on page 37). According to the Bishop’s 2008 Founders Day homily, at the end of the first meeting, Trotter instructed him to return in a week after raising a million dollars to take to Duddleston. As a start, Trotter handed the Bishop a check for $100,000. The Bishop calls the rest of the day a miracle. In a few hours walking the hallways and streets downtown, he was given $650,000. Raising the rest in a week was easy, he said. Duddleston provided the financing, and the steering committee approved the $9 million note, with David and Lynda Underwood providing the balance of the downpayment. At the steering committee meeting in January 1983 just prior to the transaction, the Bishop asked Sid Smith how he felt about the purchase. “My pocketbook is over there,” Smith responded, “but my heart is here with you.” The papers were signed and the north parcel purchased on February 9, 1983, in time for the Bishop to announce the purchase at the 134th Annual Diocesan Council in mid-February, 1983.

Also according to the Bishop’s 2008 Founders Day homily, at a fundraising meeting of eight men and two women, affectionately dubbed the “Higher Finance Committee,” not long after the purchase and convened by the Bishop to develop a plan to raise the nine million dollars of debt, the women, Lynda Underwood and Isabel Wilson, spoke up.
“’Bishop, before we begin, may we say something?’ 'Certainly,' the Bishop responded. They continued: 'We foresee a time in the future, five or ten or twenty years from now, when the Board of this School is going to say, ‘What on earth were [they] thinking about back in [1982] when they started this School without buying the south 20 acres of this property when it was available? They could have bought it then. How could they have been so stupid? And now here we are jammed in on this property between a gigantic hotel on one side and an office building on the other with no way to expand our growing School.' When asked, 'What do you propose to do about it,' Underwood and Wilson said, 'It’s easy. Go to the bank and borrow another ten million dollars and buy the rest of the forty acres.' The Bishop asked for discussion on their motion and no one said a word. At the call for a vote, all said, 'Aye.'”
Larry Neuhaus remembers a board meeting in 1983 after that fundraising committee meeting when the School owned only the north acres, in which Jack Trotter said that future generations would be disappointed if the board did not purchase the southern half of the property as well, including the Convent. In December 1983, the School purchased Parcels B and C, 6.9 acres, including 3.4 acres where the Post Oak School now resides, and an adjacent 3.5 acres. (See map above.) The purchase price was roughly $3.5 million with a note to Duddleston. Post Oak purchased its property from the School.
A few months later, at the Board of Trustees meeting on April 24, 1984, Sid Smith, the Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, reported that he was working on an option to purchase Tract D, the remaining 12 acres from Duddleston’s group for $10,030,000, with only interest to be paid each
year and the fourth year forgiven if the loan was paid in full by the deadline. (See map above.) At this point, the story requires a bit of detective work. A year later, at the board meeting of March 13, 1985, Larry Neuhaus reported for the Building Committee that the Committee and Sid Smith had met with the City of Bellaire inspectors, the architects, and P. G. Bell Construction regarding occupancy of the Convent, suggesting that Tract D, including the Convent, had been purchased.
At the following board meeting on May 8, 1985, the board voted to begin the work on the Convent ($350,000 for the exterior, $1,400,000 for the interior of the Convent, and $500,000 for the Chapel), confirming that Tract D, the final 12 acres, including the Convent, was purchased between April 1984 and May 1985, most likely in the fourth quarter of 1984, with a note to Duddleston for most of the purchase price. Shortly thereafter, Jack Trotter arranged for the $8 million note to be taken over by American General with no prepayment penalty.
By the end of 1984, the School owned roughly 35 acres and a debt which would accrue to $22 million. From its earliest days, the Founders had created a founding Board of Trustees and a statement of Mission, hired a headmaster and faculty, and opened the School for ninth and tenth grades with a class to be added each of the next two years. The biggest challenges remaining were to complete the renovations and raise the funds to pay off the enormous debt.
(Thanks to Founders the Rev. Laurens Hall, Betty Key, Graham Luhn, Claudia Moursund, Larry Neuhaus, Joel Shannon, and Lynda Underwood and Director of Facilities Robert Buckelew, Associate Head for Finance and Operations Evelyn Cambria, and former Director of Development Sukey Voskamp for their ongoing help with the research.)

FROM THE CHIEF DEVELOPMENT
OFFICER
With great excitement, we saw 200 students from the class of 2024 graduate in May, anticipating their next steps in a myriad of directions. Throughout their high school years, these students encountered countless moments and situations where motivation, resilience, and discipline were an integral part of their journeys across the Four Pillars - Academics, Arts, Athletics, and Religion. While each of the Four Pillars is significant on its own, the Episcopal High School experience is most evident when we witness the depth and breadth of the Pillars cojoining daily. That is when we truly see the beating heart of EHS. And most importantly, this foundation is not only firmly rooted in the halls of our School, but it carries forth with our graduates as they continue to learn about themselves and the world around them.
It is with great pride that we see and hear from our alumni. We hear of obstacles on and off a field or stage that seemed insurmountable but with perseverance and grit were conquered. College assignments take on new life when art skills honed at EHS find their way into a history project. Or a remote weather-set, on location and experiencing a lighting issue, is tended to quickly thanks to an alum's EHS stagecraft experience. The problem-solving and critical-thinking skills rooted in family and School are wellpositioning each graduate to be better prepared for the exciting and challenging quests ahead for years to come.
As we return to school, we are most grateful to the many families who made last year a success. Over 40 years ago, the Founders of EHS saw that Houston needed an Episcopal school, and their persistence and undaunted efforts brought it to fruition. That tenacity carries forth today. Parents come to campus at all hours to volunteer for events, games, productions, and the most appreciated by students – spirit treats. And our donors – without you EHS would not be the School that it is. Your ongoing financial support continues to build on the Mission that has been the cornerstone of EHS since the doors opened in 1984.
Please know how grateful we are for what you make possible each day at EHS. It is through each of you that we strive to honor the past, embrace the present, and create the future. I hope to see you on campus soon – we have an exciting year ahead of us!
All the best,
Margaret Young Chief Development Officer
Visual and Performing Arts Center: Laying the Foundation
As the EHS Construction Committee Chairman, I would like to express my deepest appreciation for the entire EHS community. A full-scale construction project involving newly built and renovated spaces does not happen without remarkable cooperation and resiliency. The project’s success is a direct result of a number of volunteers and an experienced team of highly experienced professionals, including Gamma Construction, Studio Red architects, and Applied GRT. In addition, our successes are amplified because of a devoted Arts Pillar faculty, who have shown remarkable flexibility, industriousness, and good cheer as we asked them to clean out every drawer, cabinet, and closet, and significantly adjust their instructional spaces this year.
As our students returned to campus this fall, they experienced exciting momentum. We are coming out of the ground! As you walk around, you can see steel beams forming our new Versatile Performing Arts Venue, grand lobby, and sculpture and fine arts studio. Framing, scaffolding, roofing, siding, glass and glazing doors and windows, and masonry work will predominate the fall construction as we move through the rough framing and exterior construction phases. At the same time, renovation of the existing Arts spaces inside the Convent building will progress.
Looking ahead, the committee is focused on finalizing the construction drawings for our fabulous new Benitez Chapel. The sub-committees are hard at work conducting weekly meetings and making crucial decisions to ensure that our Chapel is
one-of-a-kind, world-class, and uniquely EHS. Special thanks to Performing Arts Department Chair Garmon Ashby, whose passion for our organ and acoustics is unmatched. Incredible gratitude to The Rev. Art Callaham, The Rev. Beth Holden, and The Rev. Tyler Montgomery, who have conferred on every aspect of liturgical matters. Volunteers Bridget Wade ’87, Paige Rockecharlie, and Mindy Hildebrand have taken time out of their busy lives to advise on interior finishes and design. The specialized talents and collaboration of these sub-committee members have been invaluable to our success.
These buildings will leave behind a physical legacy for future generations and give EHS a unique moment in time to support our shared EHS Mission. As we proceed, our committee wishes to express gratitude to our amazing community for enduring the inconveniences, investing in our future, and praying for our progress. Go Knights!
Sincerely,
Shelley T. Barineau Construction Committee Chair Board of Trustees
Benitez Chapel
The Visual and Performing Arts Center is 94% to fundraising goal. And the Chapel efforts are gaining momentum with 21% raised to date. Always financially prudent, EHS doesn’t put a shovel in the ground until 75% of the fundraising total has been raised through gifts and pledges. And with a well-seasoned construction chair, Shelley T. Barineau and her team, Episcopal has benefitted from two prior buildings delivered on budget and on time.
Capital efforts are not included in the operational budget; they are on top of the dollars that create the daily experiences for each student. Should you have an interest in the Visual and Performing Arts building or the Chapel, we would welcome the opportunity to visit with you. EHS was built and shaped by a collective effort to create a School unlike any other in Houston. We hope that you will consider being a part of this effort as we look toward the years to come.

AUCTION 2024: A MASTERFUL KNIGHT
On February 23, 2024, the EHS community gathered to celebrate Episcopal High School’s 40th Auction, A Masterful Knight. Co-Chairs Amy Airhart, Tricia Georgiou, and Tiffany Utterson, along with countless volunteers and generous donors, raised vital revenue for the School’s operating budget.
The evening began with a cocktail hour as guests arrived before everyone moved into the Ballroom for dinner and Live Auction. Guests were treated to a fabulous dinner prepared by City Kitchen. The Live Auction was again lead by energetic Auctioneer Johnny Bravo before party-goers danced into the night. During the Pillars Up portion of the evening, the EHS community raised funds to support the Four Pillars of EHS.
With A Masterful Knight complete, EHS is gearing up for Auction 2025. Chairs Emily Adams, Greggory Fields Burk, and Leigh Anne Raymond are looking forward to a radical good time as we celebrate A Knight in the 80's. Save the date for February 21, 2025.
SPECIAL THANKS
A Masterful Knight would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who have generously underwritten expenses of the Auction.

PARENTS ASSOCIATION
Under the leadership of Parents Association President Caren McKinnie, this organization began its work in May 2023 preparing for events, luncheons, speakers, informative talks/discussion, Auction 2024, and many more activities that would not be possible without this group of talented women.
As the summer began, several committees were at work meeting, creating, and planning for the school year. The Parent-to-Parent Committee and Mentor Moms welcomed new families and helped make their transition from middle school to high school as stress-free as possible. They were there to answer questions and prepare the families as they entered the EHS community.
Parent representation from each class helped plan fundraising events specific to each class. Poinsettia and concession stand sales raised funds to help support the freshman class. Homecoming 2023 “A Knight in the Twenties,” hosted by the sophomore class, saw the largest student body attendance for a homecoming dance in the history of the School. The Senior Style Show “Havana Knights” featured the artistry and style of the senior class as they walked the runway. Like homecoming, the style show had the largest number of senior participants in School history.
Our EHS moms’ participation was on full display with break cookies, spirit treats, library help, staff relief (Crain/Convent Help Desks), and the HANDS group assisting with mailing, labeling, and collating for the Development/Auction Office. Volunteers could be seen on campus putting up academic honors flyers, decorating for the holidays, delivering baked goods for evening events, and planning for luncheons and special occasions throughout the year. Our Moms in Prayer and Care Committee continued to serve the entire EHS Community through prayer and deeds.
The 2024-2025 Parents Association will be in good hands, not missing a beat, under the guidance of 2024-2025 President Bonny Edwards.

MOMENTS
Eleven SPC championships and a state girls lacrosse title add up to a remarkable 2023-24 in the EHS Athletics Pillar. Add a Top-10 finish in the MaxPreps Cup national athletic program rankings, and we’d say that it was a historic year!
DADS CLUB
The Episcopal High School Dads Club, in its 38th year of operation, contributed financial support, volunteer hours, friendship, and excitement to the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and EHS community. The Dads Club success is highlighted by the hard work of the executive board and club members. EHS offers many opportunities for our dads, and we welcome their participation in the School community. All of these gentlemen work the entire year to provide the School with the necessary tools allowing the students to achieve and succeed. The annual Spring Golf Tournament, our main fundraiser, will be played on Monday, April 28 at Westwood Club. We thank all the current members and welcome the new students and parents for the coming school year.
Under the leadership and guidance of President Connelly McGreevy ’89, the EHS Dads Club contributed over $60,000.00 to the School, supporting all Four Pillars and the EHS community. This year, to name a few of our funding projects, the EHS Dads Club helped fund the Horsepower Club/Art Car, Robotics Club, Training Room leg sleeves, Lacrosse goals and trainers, Synergy Video analysis, Fine Arts meals prior to shows, Christmas dinner for cafeteria staff and maintenance, polos for the faculty, and cameras for Photojournalism. This group continues to financially support Field Knight, Got Blue t-shirts, Faculty/Staff/ Student appreciation events, Pillar support (academics, arts, athletics, and religion), Pink Ribbon Knight, Challenger Football/Basketball, College Counseling events, Dads Club Breakfasts, EHS Spirit Club, and other requests of the School.
The Dads Club is an organization that is successful because of its “hands-on” philosophy. The dads’ personal involvement at EHS has proven to be a wonderful addition to the School and campus life. Brian Sauer, President for the 2024-2025 school year, is ready to meet the challenge of leading this group and its members to another successful year benefiting the EHS community. The 2023-2024 board agreed to fund the purchase of a new school bus to be used by the entire EHS community. The pledge of $110,000 will be paid off over a four-year period.

ENDOWMENT UPDATE
The Endowment Fund serves as a long-term investment vehicle for Episcopal High School. The basic purpose and primary goal is to achieve long-term appreciation of principal and to provide distribution to help fund financial aid and the operation and maintenance of the School's properties and programs as directed by the Episcopal High School Endowment Fund Board.
The EHS Endowment Fund Board has been providing diligent oversight throughout the years. The Endowment Fund was established soon after the School’s founding. The board continues to govern the assets and investments with guidance of an independent advisor and consultant to maintain a strong, diversified portfolio. In addition to the basic purpose, the focus is longterm growth to support the School’s operations, direction, and Mission. At the Endowment Annual Meeting in May, the following officers were re-elected: Randa Williams as President, Bill Caudill as Vice President, Michael Ellington as Chief Investment Officer, and Clay Manley as Secretary. Randa Williams, Michael Ellington, and Tommy Wright will continue to serve as the Investment Subcommittee. Lynda Underwood, Vic Kormeier, Larry Neuhaus, and newly appointed Craig Childers are all Trustees Emeritus. We are grateful for the continued support and commitment of all the members who serve on this well-established board.
As of June 30, 2024, the Endowment Fund ended with a balance of $59 million. In 2023-2024, the endowment contributed $1.5 million to the School’s annual operating budget of $36.1 million, and the board is pleased that the Endowment Fund could make such a significant contribution to the daily operating needs of the School. Ongoing growth ensures an affordable, sustainable future, and added contributions provide opportunities for additional investment diversification to allow investment in areas which should increase returns, while reducing downside risk in some scenarios.
In the most recent fiscal year, a solid global economic backdrop supported equities, although euphoria around big tech and artificial intelligence continued to drive relative performance in U.S. favor. The disinflation narrative gained momentum in 2024, with many central banks starting to reduce policy rates, a positive for markets, especially the most rate-sensitive areas. Now, political and geopolitical challenges seem poised to capture the narrative and drive volatility late into 2024, given the number of elections this year. The Endowment Fund’s portfolio performed in line with its diversified portfolio benchmark with a calendar year-todate gain of 6.0% and a 13.2% gain for the fiscal year.
Episcopal High School’s Endowment Fund welcomes contributions and pledges of any amount. The Endowment Fund is a perfect way to preserve a donor’s charitable intent for generations to come. Should you wish to learn more about endowment giving, please feel free to contact Margaret Young, Chief Development Officer at myoung@ehshouston.org. Margaret would be happy to discuss endowment giving opportunities in more detail.

The Hexagon Distinguished Achievement Award recognizes a current member of the faculty or staff who has cultivated EHS’ deepest ideals and has made a lasting impact on the School. The recipient is someone who has fostered the development of students’ minds, faith, and spirit. Most importantly, he or she has worked to ensure that all EHS students are well-grounded in the Mission of Episcopal High School.
Since its founding, Episcopal High School has benefited tremendously from the leadership of the bishops who have continually encouraged students to become well-rounded individuals through self-discipline, leadership, responsibility, integrity, and respect for others. Their greatest wish is for EHS students to graduate with a storehouse of knowledge and character that will enable them to live meaningful lives in service to others and continue to reflect the School’s Mission. The Bishops’ Alumni Award recognizes Episcopal High School Alumni who are fulfilling this vision.
