Suplemento literario especial: Poemas escritos por niños y niñas C

s part of this year’s fourth annual Flor y Canto para nuestros niños y niñas Poetry Festival, Acción Latina and Luna’s Press and Bookstore organized four creative writing workshops. The children who participated had fun in the cheerful, sensitive and highly creative environments. They wrote, painted, sang and danced, celebrating in the name of poetry. The young used their words to deliver us humble, beautiful and simple verses from their hearts.

In these short poems, our children tell of their joys and concerns regarding our beloved Mission District. The workshops were led by the poets of the neighborhood: Leticia Hernandez, Harold Terezón, Amalia Alvarez, Francisco Herrera, Jorge Argueta, and René Colato Lainez from Los Angeles.

We are grateful for the support of: Metzali Andrade, Berlin Macuixtle, Michelle Silva and Gabriel Ventura.

I come from the Mission The pan dulce and the mucic I like the copal and the altars That help us remember our ancestors The skateboards I don’t like the racism of the police That kill people for no reason My Papa and Mama are important to me My home is special My room, my Mama’s room! I feel safe in my Mother warm arms around me —Malena Ruth Sutter

Dear San Fran Mission, I will always miss the orange and black SF Giants, the sweet taste of freshly baked Pan dulce. The Paleto man strolling in the mission waiting for children to get off school. I will miss the ruby red and muraled lowriders chasing through las calles. And the Aztec dancers burning copal. But I never liked the way Latinos and Blacks are getting kicked out of their homes every day. And the white techies gentrifying and intruding our barrio. The police racially profiling our brothers and sisters, and murdering us.When I return I hope to see you grow in to a more accepting of people and color. —Margarita Bac Sierra Dear San Francisco Mission, I will always miss the fresh smell of carne in tacos and burritos. I will miss the bright colorful mural that shows the dancers and people at carnaval. I will miss the loving, kind, and positive people who always put a smile on face. But, I never liked the way people of color are racially profiled by the police. I also don’t like how people are being kicked out of their homes. When I return, I hope to see the mission to be even happier and better than it already is. Love, —Ben Bac Sierra I will miss the ocean creatures. I well miss Dolores Park because I like the chairs spin around. But I never I liked the way people litter. When I return, I hope to see you grow in to a great world that fixes littering. —Chris Fonseca Dear San Francisco, I will always miss Pan dulce and I will always miss walking on the San Francisco Bridge. Going to restaurant and eating likes a family. But I never liked the way they killed the people at the street. And I never liked the way they treat other people bad in work. When I return, I hope to see you grow into to not kill people in the streets. And not treat people bad. And not treat people bad. And I want San Francisco in a better live for me and for my family and for other people. —Diana Sofia Escobar Rodriguez Hey SF I will always miss mi friends and House of Air. House of Air you play dodge ball and jump on trampolines And jump on something and land trampolines I never liked the way killing and burning houses and people have to move When I return I hope to see that a law is no burning houses and you can’t kill people. Sincerely, —Ronald Claros Dear San Francisco, I will always miss the Golden Gate Bridge, and the many cultures it shields. Besides it’s beautiful red color. I’ll miss the bustling and murals in the Mission, and the smells from the food stands and restaurants. I’ll miss the sweet smell of Pan Dulce at the bakery, and the days that switch from hot to cold to heavy with fog that envelopes you like a blanket. But I never liked the way people are left struggling on your streets, because they couldn’t afford to live in your houses, or the trash-strewn sidewalks. I don’t like gentrification in the Mission, or the way prices increase like roller coasters. When I return, I hope to see you grow into a safe, affordable place for everyday to flourish and respect each other no matter what. Love, —Stella Danielson Dear San Francisco, I will always miss your unpredictable weather: the warm sunshine and the col, wet fog. I’ll miss the salty ocean spray, and the gritty sand at the beach. And, I will miss the fancy boba stand, with it’s fragrant Thai tea and soft, squishy tapioca pearls. Finally, I’ll miss the sunlight reflecting off of Mission pool, and the rush of adrenaline as I dive into it’s chlorinated waters. But, I never liked the way that people were being thrown out of their houses, just because the rent was too high. And I’ve always hated the stench of gasoline and tobacco that fills the air on some days, and the cold, dry weather that we get at the height our drought, And, I’ve never liked how the tech companies keep filling up the city, which causes the local to have to move out. When I return, I hope that the housing situation is down, the drought will have drowned, and most of all, I hope that SF will become a safe place for people to live in peace. Love, —Asha Grace Sager Dear San Francisco I will always miss the pan dulce day and I will always miss walking on the San Francisco bridge going to restaurants and eating like a family but I never liked the way they killed the people at the streets and I never liked the way other people bad in work when I return I hope to see you grow into not kill people in the streets and not treat people bad and I want San Francisco in a better life for me and for my family and for other people. Love, —Diana Sofía Escobar Rodriguez
