angerous fabrications of the migrant identity—while nothing new to the United States—have become especially prevalent in the era of Donald Trump, regularly circulating every media platform imaginable.

Because of this, our communities are bombarded with racist, xenophobic propaganda on a regular basis, often spurring violent behavior against the Latinx community. Daily exposure to such hateful rhetoric would be enough to make most withdraw and submit to the ostracization.

VisibiliT, however, chooses to retaliate with song and dance as a form of resistance to the increasingly oppressive environment in this country.

VisibiliT is a fundraising platform in the Bay Area that hosts dance parties to raise awareness and financial support for one of the most vulnerable populations in the world: the transgender migrant community.

VisibiliT was first established in December 2018 and has since maintained a solid presence within the POC and LGBTQIA+ community, frequently hosting fundraising events in San Francisco and Oakland. San Francisco y Oakland. La idea de esta organización surgió de la incesante cobertura mediática a la caravana de migrantes centroamericanos rumbo a los EEUU en 2019. Las imágenes fueron usadas por la administración de Trump para fabricar una “crisis” en la frontera con México y fomentar una imagen de miedo hacia la comunidad de migrantes. Sin embargo, para Crystal Millán, activista local, esas imágenes provocaron una respuesta diferente.

Con la intención de organizar un evento de recaudación de fondos para migrantes necesitados, Millán se puso en contacto con la compañera Elaina Vermeulen de la organización Santa Fe Dreamers Project, en Nuevo México, y unió fuerzas. Este proyecto brinda servicios legales gratuitos a inmigrantes y promueve el empoderamiento económico, el desarrollo comunitario, la unidad familiar y la liberación de migrantes en centros de detención. Con la ayuda de Vermeulen, Millán se reunió e identificó a los primeros beneficiarios de los eventos organizados por VisibiliT. Estoy muy agradecida con todos los que me han apoyado y que me han brindado apoyo financiero hasta ahora”, dijo Yuri, quien también es mexicana. “Realmente necesitaba ese apoyo para pagar mi comida, mi factura de teléfono y básicamente todos mis artículos personales que requiero para sentirme yo misma. Pero este apoyo no sólo me ayuda sino a muchas otras chicas recién liberadas de los centros de detención. Junto con el apoyo de la comunidad, lo que VisibiliT ha hecho por mí realmente me ha ayudado a ponerme de pie”.

A partir de noviembre pasado, el número de chicas que esta organización apoya ha aumentado a dieciocho.

“También le dimos la bienvenida a una nueva chica que venía de Centroamérica y logramos encontrarle alojamiento durante un mes”, dijo Millán. “Estamos construyendo conexiones con nuestra comunidad para proporcionar redes de apoyo que ofrezcan más que una donación de dinero cada tantos meses”.

ganizer, explained the importance of coalitions in the success of VisibiliT and the support that the organization has been able to provide for a number of transgender asylum seekers in the Bay Area.

“I’m a part of the organization Border Angels as well, which is a human rights organization that primarily focuses on immigrant life.

So, when I approached them about partnering with VisibiliT, they were very much willing to help,” Duran said. “They knew we at VisibiliT were also against this capitalistic society that oppresses our people—people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community. We’re fighting the same monster.”

Support from the public has been just as important for VisibiliT. Yuri (who requested only to use only her first name due to safety concerns) is one of the many chicas supported by the organization. She shared a bit about what community love means to her.

“It makes me feel very happy. I’m so grateful for everyone that’s supported me and who’s provided me financial support so far,” said Yuri, who is originally from Mexico. “I really do need that support to pay for my food, my phone bill and for basically all my personal items that I need to make me feel like me.

But this support not only helps me, it helps so many other chicas that are being released from detention. All that VisibiliT has done for me along with the community has really helped me gain my footing on the outside.”

As of November 2019, the number of chicas that VisibiliT helps support has grown to 18.

“We also just welcomed a new chica coming from Central America and found a connect to house her for one month,” Millán said. “We are building connections with our community to provide networks of support that go outside just doing money drops every several months.”

Yuri describió un incidente que ocurrió en diciembre de 2018 en el que intentaba calmar un altercado entre dos amigos suyos en un evento en Oakland. Despite the overflowing support that VisibiliT and the chicas have been receiving, there are always a number of challenges that make the transition from detention difficult.

Yuri described an incident from December 2018 where she was attempting to defuse an altercation between two friends at an event in Oakland and instead of helping Yuri de-escalate the situation, security chose to taser and arrest her.

Though she has attempted to file a police report with Oakland PD, Yuri explains that Oakland PD never followed up with her. She feels that the lack of urgency in their response shows the police don’t prioritize Yuri’s incident in spite of the fact that this was an obvious abuse of power on the security guard’s end.

“Aren’t we supposed to be in a safer country now compared to the countries we fled?” asked Yuri. “We did not come here for this.”

The constant threat of criminalization and violence makes life for transgender migrants particularly precarious. With no legal work available to them upon their arrival, many risk falling into unsafe and unstable “under the table” jobs to sustain themselves.

Nonetheless, VisibiliT and the chicas remain fearless in the face of adversity.

Duran reiterates that the organization continues to call out to the community to do their part in the fight against the systems of oppression that attempt to hold them down.

“I think it’s crucial that the Latinx community and allies work together to break down these systems of oppression that continue to criminalize our community, especially the LGBTQIA+ community,” Duran said. “We need to come together and show up to these spaces and show out for marginalized communities because if we don’t take care of our own people, nobody will.”

AB 857: THE CRUCIAL FIRST STEP TOWARD GIVING CONTROL OF CITY’S MONEY BACK TO THE PEOPLE Ian Firstenberg

months with legislation introduced in November last year establishing a second municipal task force focusing on what the process would look like and possibly drafting a business plan.

“This legislation [AB857] changes the game and allows a pathway for local or regional public banks to be formed and chartered by the state, an option that previously did not exist,” Fewer told El Tecolote. “We have taken many steps towards a public bank during my three years on the Board of Supervisors, but the next step necessary to move this project forward is the development of a business plan.”

Both Chiu and Fewer also focused on how a public bank would help refocus the financials power of San Francisco from underwriting corporate profits to affordable housing and small business investment.

These have been key focal points from Public Bank Coalition organizers throughout the entire process and was something some local organizers felt the first task force fell short on.

On a local level the public bank movement has largely been driven by younger, distinctly progressive organizers who have worked tirelessly to bring this conversation to the forefront of the state politics discussion.

Kurtis Wu, co-founder of the San Francisco Public Bank Coalition, is one such organizer.

“AB857 was a huge win for our coalition. We not only proved that we could pass tangible legislation but we proved to ourselves that we can take on one of the most powerful industries, Wall Street, and win. We know the fight isn’t over and we need to take this momentum and energy to the local level,” Wu said.

t has been over a decade since the financial markets crashed in 2008, spurring foreclosure of homes, job loss for millions and economic destitution for many. The effects of this crisis are still being felt by working Americans, but for Wall Street these effects are spelled with a dollar sign.

According to KQED, since PG&E—California’s massive utility company—filed Chapter 11 protection in January 2019, lawyers and consultants have made $217 million.

Corporate banks have drawn $114 million in financing fees, a number that could exceed $1 billion by the time PG&E exits bankruptcy next year.

This comes as a narrative absolving Wall Street from blame for that financial crisis is being pushed by a new working paper, published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia in December 2019.

This highlights something working Americans have known for a long time: Wall Street is the enemy of average Americans and will make money off of their despair and destitution.

Public banking is the solution.

Broadly a public bank, in the context of a large municipality like San Francisco, means that the roughly $11 billion in taxes drawn from residents is under the financial control of the City and accountable to elected officials.

This is opposed to how it currently operates which is under the purview of Bank of America.

AB 857, which passed in early October of this year, is the first step to public control of these funds. This bill allows “the lending of public credit to public banks and authorize public ownership of public banks.”

“AB 857 is really about making sure that the public’s money is used to benefit the public,” Chiu told El Tecolote. “Currently, a portion of our tax dollars go to some of the largest Wall Street banks in the form of fees and high interest rates. I think public banking could provide a more efficient and beneficial avenue to keeping the public’s money safe and investing in worthwhile community endeavors.”

effective form of money management for the public is a sentiment gaining ground with working people and politicians across the state and even the country.

“From public banking advocacy organizations, civil rights attorneys, environmental advocates, Democratic party activists, and others, many people had a hand in getting this historic bill over the finish line,” Chiu stated.

This unified front of working people, organizers and politicians is what has brought public banking to the forefront of the political discussion both in California and nationwide.

“It doesn’t make sense to line

the pockets of Wall Street investors with public tax dollars when we could be investing that money back into our local communities,” Chiu stated. “Also, many large financial institutions invest in industries—fossil fuels, gun manufacturing, private prisons, immigration detention centers—that most Californians are opposed to.”

That wave of public banking support is clearly bolstered by a ground swell of people, across party lines, who see California’s investments in large conglomerate banks as not only immoral but unsustainable.

Tanto Chiu como Fewer también se centraron en cómo un banco público ayudaría a reenfocar el poder financiero de San Francisco desde la suscripción de ganancias corporativas hasta la inversión en vivienda asequible y pequeñas empresas.

When we were children and life was still wide open before us, they asked about our future, when we’d become grown ups. Right there all the magical moments disappeared! Thus they planted their seed and we became afraid, trembled and that’s the way we spent our lives.

M

y great-grandmother Margarita lived with my parents, my three sisters and me for a few of my early years, between 5 and 10 years old. She came from illiterate “campesino” parents and she was a determined, even intimidating character, who spent long hours tending our backyard. She was then in her mid-80s.

She was also a fervent Catholic and she spent at least a couple of hours every night praying to her copiously bleeding collection of wooden and plaster religious figures. In the penumbra created by a couple of candles, she would wear some head-to-toe flannel pajamas and, before starting the monotony of her prayers, she let her long gray hair down. It would almost reach the floor. Then, she would take off her false teeth and placed them in a glass of water.

Those floating teeth, with the light of the candles, sometimes flashed a distorted yellow grin.

Her room was located next to the bathroom.

Since she kept the door ajar, every night, as we took turns brushing our teeth, her nightly ritual was a scary sight for our impressionable children’s eyes.

We would scurry back to our rooms and await the inevitable arrival of our great-grandmother.

She insisted that we should say a prayer each night, before falling asleep. She would first come to my door and open it, without any ceremony.

Standing toothless in the doorframe, she would demand: “Carlitos: your prayer!”

I learned a mercifully short rhyme that I would recite quite rapidly, eager to have her move to my sisters’ room as soon as possible: “With God I lay, with God I awake and The Virgin covers me with her shawl! Good night abuela!”

Finally, she would move on to extract the prayer from my sisters and I would be free of the rather unsettling nightly ceremony.

Fear and repentance were two words that always featured in any conversation related to religion: fear of God and repentance as a key to enter into Heaven. I recall thinking, even in those early years: “What does my great-grandma fear so much? Death? Fear of the unknown? What is she repenting for? What great sins is she guilty of?”

I never asked those questions. Somehow, it seemed inappropriate to ask them. Some

Illustration: Gus Reyes things were to be left unquestioned. A great barrier came up: it was called faith. You either had it or not. And if you did not have it (or even suspected not to have it), you should better keep quiet.

Perhaps those forced regurgitations of my short nightly prayers were the basic reason as to why I never went to church and actually developed what I think is a healthy questioning attitude.

Nevertheless, as healthy as it might be to question certain subjects, it would take some guts to question them outloud. Religion is one of them.

Vocally, or in a written form. Many moons passed before I dared.

Years later, when I was in middle school, I encountered another subject that was difficult to talk about: politics.

For 12 precious years, I attended a single place for my elementary through high school education.

At the Liceo Manuel de Salas, an experimental school directly linked to the University of Chile, I first heard and witnessed heated discussions about political issues.

Not only verbal discussions, but also physical bloody battles between leftists, young catholics and right wingers.

I could not fathom why some 12-year-olds would beat each other over politics. It was, clearly, a divisive subject. I was a wide-eyed mute on that field, although I felt that my sympathy was, rather

mysteriously, on the side of the leftists.

It was also at that time when I first heard some harsh phrases, among them “the only good communist is a dead communist.” It was a phrase that some said with hatred in their voices.

Again, I thought, what are people afraid of?

Why say that ugly phrase, when one of our national intellectual heroes, the poet Pablo Neruda, was indeed a communist and we were asked to memorize some of his poetry? Was there some brainwashing going on? Had the communists taken over? What did all this mean?

When I timidly began to raise my questions about either religion or politics, I was told about the apparent taboo of discussing either religion or politics. “Never bring politics or religion into a conversation, if you want to keep things nice and peaceful.”

Years later, many years later, I have discussed those issues many times. I promoted and provoked their discussion as a teacher, because I learned that “keeping things nice and peaceful” only benefits those who are in control of politics and religion… and there is usually a strong complicity between those in charge of both subjects. The less people discuss, learn or question those issues, the better for those in charge.

Politics and Religion should not be kept off limits. An educated people is a freer people.

Nos hablaron una vez, cuando niños, cuando la vida se muestra entera, que el futuro, que cuando grandes, y ahí murieron ya los momentos, sembraron así su semlla y tuvimos miedo, temblamos y en ésto se nos fue la vida.

i bisabuela Margarita vivió con mis padres, mis tres hermanas y yo durante mi primera infancia, entre los 5 y 10 años de edad. Sus padres fueron campesinos analfabetos y ella tenía un carácter fuerte. Pasaba largas horas

trabajando en el jardín. Ella andaba por los ochenta y tantos años.

También era una católica ferviente. Cada noche, pasaba por lo menos dos horas rezando a su abundante colección de imágenes religiosas sangrantes, hechas de yeso o madera. En la penumbra, creada por un par de velas, vestía pijamas de franela y ―antes de comenzar con la monotonía de sus oraciones― se soltaba su abundante cabellera, que casi descendía hasta el suelo. Luego, se sacaba su dentadura y la hundía en un vaso de agua.

Los dientes flotantes, a la luz de las velas, a veces despedían una distorsionada sonrisa amarillenta.

Su cuarto estaba al lado del baño. Cada noche, mientras nosotros tomábamos turnos para el lavado de dientes, ella mantenía su puerta entreabierta, observábamos su ritual nocturno, una ceremonia que alteraba el pulso de nuestra imaginación infantil.

Corríamos de vuelta a nuestros cuartos a esperar la inevitable llegada de la bisabuela, quien insistía en que rezáramos cada noche antes de dormirnos. Primero, venía a mi cuarto y la abría, sin anunciarse. Desde el umbral, sin sus dientes, demandaba: “¡Carlitos! ¡Su rezo!”

Aprendí un rezo corto que recitaba rápidamente, ansioso de que ella se fuera al cuarto de mis hermanas lo antes posible: “Con Dios me acuesto, con Dios me levanto y la Virgen me tapa con su manto. ¡Buenas noches abuela!’. Al fin, partía a llevar su mensaje a mis hermanas y yo quedaba libre de ese rito tenebroso.

El miedo y el arrepentimiento eran dos palabras que siempre aparecen al hablar de la religión.

Temor a dios y arrepentimiento como una clave para entrar al cielo. Recuerdo pensar, a esa corta edad: “¿A qué teme mi bisabuela? ¿A la muerte? ¿A lo desconocido? ¿De qué se arrepiente? ¿Qué grandes pecados la culpan?”.

Nunca hice esas preguntas. Me parecía poco

apropiado hacerlas. Algunas cosas no debían menearse. Una gran barrera hacía su aparición: se llamaba fé. O la tenías, o no la tenías. Y si no la tenías (o solo sospechabas no tenerla) mejor quedarse callado.

Tal vez la forzada repetición de esos cortos rezos nocturnos sean la razón básica de que nunca fuera a la iglesia y que desarrollara lo que creo es una saludable actitud cuestionadora. Sin embargo, aunque sea saludable cuestionar ciertos temas, había que ser valiente para preguntar en voz alta.

La religión es uno de esos temas. Fuera en forma vocal o escrita, pasaron muchas lunas ante de atreverme a hacerlo.

Años después, al estar en la secundaria, encontré otro tema: la política.

Por doce bellos años estudié en un solo sitio, desde kindergarten hasta el fin de la secundaria. En el Liceo Manuel de Salas, una escuela experimental directamente ligada a la Universidad de Chile, oí y presencié acaloradas discusiones acerca de ese tema: la política. No sólo discusiones verbales, sino también sangrientas batallas campales entre “izquierdistas, jóvenes católicos y derechistas”.

No podía comprender por qué muchachos de 12 años de edad se golpearan con entusiasmo por ese tema. Era, obviamente, un tema candente. Entonces, me transformé en un mudo, de ojos y oídos abiertos, cada vez que surgía el tema, aunque mis simpatías se inclinaran, misteriosamente, hacia el lado de ‘los izquierdistas’.

Fue en esos años cuando escuché algunas frases terribles. Entre ellas “el único comunista bueno es un comunista muerto”. Una frase que algunos decían con odio.

Y de nuevo pensé: “¿A qué le teme esta gente? ¿Por qué decir esa frase fea, cuando uno de nuestros héroes intelectuales, el poeta Pablo Neruda, Vea ABOGADO, página 10

olling up to The Chapel, google maps says I’ve arrived at 777 Valencia. I can feel it, I’m at Accion Latina’s 38th Annual Encuentro del Canto Popular. From the low-lit entrance, the smell of pan dulce, sounds of carcajadas, and sights of countless abrazos among entre-conocidos de San Francisco.

I walk through the corridors, and feel the hum of a hundred hearts beating in unison, filling the room with anticipation, ready for an anthem to loosen their buns to—in the pit.

Something deeper began to undulate from the stage. As I walked closer, I see La Noche Oskura preparing to revolutionize the vibe. It seems que comenzó la fiesta.

The inception of La Noche Oskura—a band that plays a blend of ska, reggae and rock—began in 2008 in Sacramento, when Diego Fernando (Nando) Estrada, vocalist, lyricist, and remaining original band member and manager, was invited to jam out with a small band that would later become who we know today as La Noche Oskura.

When speaking with Nando about what inspires La Noche Oskura to sing as outspokenly as they do, he highlighted that it comes from a place of personal experiences with the police and what he’s learned about international relations while at Chico State.

As an undergraduate, Nando spent most of his time developing debating skills in the Model United Nations. Much of what inspired Nan-

do to pursue this in his undergraduate career was to unveil the reasons history remained so “contradictory to what’s going on like freedom for all.” From age 2 to 21, he grew up #undocumentedandunafraid to question everything. For him, music was the primal outlet that allowed him to influence people in a much deeper way than politics ever could.

“Music contributes to culture and culture shapes people and values and morals,” he said.

Listening to Nando, I recall the lyrics from their crowd-stirring song “Popo” and the way that it enlivened the spirits and mended the souls of the community who couldn’t help but shake and groove: “Pinche popo, pinche migra Pinche misma porqueria.”

In a nutshell, the song “Popo” emphasizes the disgust felt among Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color whose lives are continuously threatened by the mere existence of the police. If we take a moment to think back to the inception of the police in this country, their purpose was to capture runaway slaves.

Today, we continue to see the same brutality used against black and brown bodies enacted in every crevice of the country. It is songs like “Popo” whose lyrical vibrations sound to reach and uncover those crevices and heighten our attention where media attempts to have it numbed.

Danzas por Nicaragua, a subset of the Nicaraguan cultural San Francisco-based nonprofit Chavalos de Aquí y Allá, organized the performance of “El Güegüense o Macho Ratón” at the Mission’s Brava Theater on Oct. 12, 2019. The famed satirical drama and dance was conceived in the 17th century colonial town of Diriamba, Nicaragua, and the theme of the evening’s show was, most fittingly, “raza y resistencia.”

Concerted efforts by Nicaraguans to come together through cultural events and protest have grown in the face of a worsening political crisis in Nicaragua that has resulted in 70,000 refugees to neighboring Costa Rica and 325 deaths. The political crisis has its echoes not only in the country’s late 1970’s revolutionary period but also within the nation’s rich history of reactionary, often anti-authoritarian art.

The Twitter hashtag “SOSNicaragua” first emerged around April 19, 2018, according to UN DISPATCH in-depth analysis, following controversial government reforms to social security. The “reforms,” which would’ve increased the amount paid by the employed and reduced the amount received by pensioners, were the proverbial last straw on a decade’s worth of abuses. “Creo que la comunidad nicaragüense se ha despertado aquí en el Área de la Bahía”, dijo Erik Leiva, Director Ejecutivo de Chavalos de Aquí y Allá. “La forma en que lo manejamos

para unirse a la caravana.

“La idea sobre este libro nace de mi propia experiencia porque también soy inmigrante”, dijo Argueta.

“Cuando escuché que había una caravana que venía de El Salvador hacia los EEUU, tuve que ir a reunirme y hablar con ellos”.

Misael es un símbolo que representa a todas las familias valientes que dejaron sus hogares en América Central. Este personaje se va con su familia de Plaza Divino Salvador, sabiendo que no volverá a su hermoso país.

“La mayoría de las personas que vi provenían de pequeños pueblos, de lugares con violencia de pandillas”, dijo Argueta. “Las personas que vi y con las que hablé son personas humildes. “El movimiento del 19 de abril ha inspirado una nueva ola de canciones revolucionarias”, escribió Urbina. “El uso de las herramientas de la nueva canción latinoamericana —la trova cubana, la música de protesta chilena y la canción nicaragüense— vuelve a proponer los valores políticos de una revolución, que traicionó sus principios”.

Las voces involucradas en esta disidencia no son ideológicamente homogéneas, según Zamora. Algunos se oponen al régimen de Ortega por razones que provienen de sentimientos puramente antisandinistas.

“Son personas cuyos orígenes son contrarrevolucionarios, huyeron de la revolución tal vez porque eran somocistas”, dijo Zamora. “Y luego están apoyando la rebelión contra Ortega y Murillo por esa razón, nada más”.

As a historian, Nando understands that history repeats itself. As an educator, he pushes youth to challenge their circumstances and to feel deserving of equality in every aspect of their lives, especially in their art. As a musician, Nando and the members of La Noche Oskura embody the role of educators who compose the truth with sound that opens the community’s heart to solutions made to break the very cycles that history repeats.

“Music creates unity…,” says Nando. “Music literally controls space. [So] what better way to make space for people than to make music that controls space…on a spiritual level.”

La Noche Oskura is only one piece of the puzzle for what the members of the band want to do for their community in Sacramento and beyond. La Noche Oskura, Nando says, is a “vehicle” to spread knowledge by people who “look like us and come from the same hoods.

[It’s] important that we’re writing our own stories.”

Along with this, Nando has created a promotion company called “Anarchos Presents” to connect bands within Sacramento. Having performed with bands like La Plebe and Inspektor, La Noche Oskura wishes to help other bands who write for the people. Eventually, they wish to create a cultural hub in Sacramento similar to Acción Latina, where musicians from all walks of life who are moving under similar missions and visions can build bridges and solidify access to music for youth living in

Simultaneously walking into this conversation with Nando and the memory of La Noche Oskura’s ambiance was like walking into a revolutionary sanctuary echoing with sounds meticulously composed by the most daring minds.

“Understanding [music] from a cultural and spiritual side helps people in some of the roughest times in our history,” he says. As seen, La Noche Oskura is evidence that “music is medication.” In an era where “there [are] more times where we’re doubting ourselves than moving forward,” music is the way.

Cuando comencé, tímidamente, a hacer mis preguntas acerca de religión o de política, aprendí acerca del aparente tabú de no discutir sobre religión o política. “Nunca saques el tema de la política ni la religión en la conversación, si quieres que las cosas sigan pacíficas y agradables”.

Años después, muchos años después, he discutido esos temas una infinidad de veces.

Como profesor, he promovido y provocado su discusión, pues aprendí que “las cosas sigan pacíficas y agradables” solo beneficia a los que están en control tanto de la religión como de la política… y existe una fuerte complicidad entre los que están a cargo de los temas. Mientras menos aprenda, discuta o cuestione la gente, es mejor para los que están a cargo.

El discutir de política o religión no debe restringirse: un pueblo educado es un pueblo más libre.

and served as the Vice Minister of the Nicaraguan Ministry of Culture for the Sandinista government after the Nicaraguan revolution— described in detail the internal and external factors that gradually soured the 1979 revolution she had been a part of; that eventually lead to the accession of Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, to power in 2007.

After the Sandinista victory of July 19, 1979, the Ministry of Culture, according to Zamora, worked to combat the long history of anti-culture and illiteracy that existed in Nicaragua during the regime of the Somozas—their family dictatorship lasting from 1936 to 1979.

“You know the beginning of the world? It was like Genesis. We were creating everything from scratch, from nothing,” Zamora said.

“Because it was the first time we ever had a ministry of culture in the history of Nicaragua.”

Internal and external forces set in motion a series of governmental distortions that led to the modern-day oppressive Ortega regime.

Zamora said the Ministry of Culture, along with other branches of the revolutionary government, changed over time by external war and fractions within the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN).

“Rosarillo Murillo, who is now the vice president of Nicaragua, she started, let’s say, an internal war against the programs of the Ministry of Culture,” Zamora said. “It was impossible to counteract what she was doing, because she was then, and since then, the partner of Daniel Ortega. And she was using her power to erode the programs in the Ministry of Culture.”

This perversion of the new state was not without resistance, Zamora said. Those loyal to the revolution’s ideals were eventually discarded and replaced by individuals more faithful to Ortega and Murillo, who have been the cause of several recent anti-government protests.

The end of November 2019 saw large scale demonstrations and protests from thousands of exiled Nicarguans in the streets of San Jose, Costa Rica, (as reported by Nicaraguan news-

paper La Prensa) and Nicaragua Actual, who describe themselves as a group of exiled Nicaraguan journalists. Notable among these vocalizations of dissent was the commencement of a hunger strike by the mothers of several political prisoners who are nearing a full year of exile in San Jose, Costa Rica, and the recent formation of a Costa Rican chapter of La Unidad Nacional Azul y Blanco (UNAB). UNAB is an organization aimed at the peaceful construction and promotion of democracy in Nicaragua, and the expedited removal of Ortega from power.

“I think the Nicaraguan community has woken up here in the Bay Area,” said Erik Leiva, Executive Director of Chavalos de Aquí y Allá.

“The way we’ve handled it is we resist through art, whether it be through dance or music.”

According to Leiva, Chavalos de Aquí y Allá fundraises, via events like “El Güegüense,” for donations that are used for humanitarian efforts. These efforts usually, according to Leiva, coelce into necessity baskets referred to as “Canastas Navideñas,” which are filled with essential goods such as rice, beans and soap that are given to low-income families in Nicaragua.

Carmen Gonzalez, an organizer with “SOSNicaragua San Francisco,” said that the Mission’s Nicaraguan community demonstrated during the subsequent weeks and months following the news of the violent protest suppressions. They can be spotted, swaddled in upside down flags, tabling near the 24th street BART entrance on “Sandino plaza”—as it came to be known in the late 70s by Nicaraguans in San Francisco who supported the Sandinista Revolution, according to John Ross’ book “Murdered by Capitalism: A Memoir of 150 Years of Life and Death on the American Left.”

“I lived in Nicaragua during that first era of the supposed Sandinista revolution,” Gonzales said. “So what the Sandinista Government is doing in this second stage is that they’ve been dismantling all of the powers of the state and the judicial system.”

The response from the Nicaraguan community itself has been strong, according to Gon-

zalez, though this enthusiasm of support is not universal.

Mission-based artist, Calle 24 council member and Chavalos de Aqui y Allá board member, Gabriela Alemán, was dismayed by the reaction of many of those not directly connected to Nicaragua, within the Mission.

“The Mission has been really disappointing. People are sympathetic, but I don’t think Nicaragua is in the mainstream of anyone’s frame of mind,” Alemán said. “When things happen in Puerto Rico, the Mission stops.

When things happen in Mexico, the Mission stops and the community at large stops. With Nicaragua the only reason there’s still been like traction is because of the internet.”

According to a recent cultural analysis essay by Nicasio Urbina—professor of Hispano American Literature and Director of Latino American Studies at the University of Cincinnati— called “La nueva música revolucionaria de la insurrección de abril en Nicaragua,” 2019 saw music take on a revolutionary or iconoclastic stance toward the Ortega government.

“The April 19 movement has inspired a new wave of revolutionary songs,” Urbina wrote. “Using the tools of the new Latin American song—the Cuban trova, the Chilean protest music, and the Nicaraguan song—reproposes the political values of a revolution that betrayed its principles.”

The voices involved in this dissent are not ideologically homogeneous, according to Zamora. Some oppose the Ortega regime for reasons that stem from purely anti-Sandinista sentiments.

“They are people whose origins are counterrevolutionary, they fled the revolution perhaps because they were Somocistas,” Zamora said. “And then they are supporting the rebellion against Ortega and Murillo for that reason, nothing more.”

Regardless of any political differences Zamora feels, generally speaking, there is “a great solidarity among Nicaraguans.”

“If there has been one thing that I have dealt with ever since I left my country,” Aburto Vega said. “It has been homesickness … we bring a little bit of home to anyone in that audience.”

“El Güegüense,” which has its own revolutionary origins, has gained a new significance for many during these trying times. “El Güegüense” has become, in many ways, a means to reconnect with a remote home and a place to voice shared pain.

“At the end of our last show,” Aburto Vega said. “Everybody just got up and started clapping and singing with us. And it brought not just tears in me but tears in a lot of people that were just there.”

Although several theories estimate the exact date of creation and identity of the writer, it is generally accepted “El Güegüense” debuted in Nahuatl and found its first home among street theaters under the noses of Spanish colonial authorities. The word “Güegüense,” the name attributed to the play’s main character, also has its roots in the Nahuatl word “huehue,” meaning “wise man” or “old man.” The resplendent costumes, dresses, masks and large wooden “Gigantona” shown and used throughout the performance are all seminal pieces of Nicaraguan cultural iconography.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the play a Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

“The production we put on represents the many parts of Nicaragua...I feel like [people], don’t really know too much about the other side of Nicaragua,” said Armando Ibarra, co-choreographer. “There’s so much more that people can know, there’s so much diversity in just that small country.”

Through partially subdued tears, Aburto Vega commented on the political crisis affecting Nicaragua.

“It all goes to the heart,” Aburto Vega said.

“To the bottom of it, seeing our people die.”

We’re kicking off the return of these exhibit series with a juried show celebrating the work of female photographers during Women’s History Month. Female photographers of all ages and skill levels who reside in the greater Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano and Sonoma) are encouraged to enter.
