El Tecolote: A Photographic Time Capsule

A PHOTOGRAPHIC TIME CAPSULE The first annual photojournalism exhibit, Latino Life was held in 2013. I created this exhibit to highlight the best photography work I’d seen in the pages of El Tecolote newspaper since becoming its Photography Editor in 2011. The show was inspired from a desire to honor the work of our all-volunteer photography team at El Tecolote. There was also a goal to present photojournalism not only as a medium to inform the public, but as a fine art.

photographing fires, who have been tear-gassed during Occupy, pepper sprayed during alt-right riots, or beaten by sheriff’s deputies at City Hall.

Who climb ladders and scaffolds to get the shot, who ride ferries, trains, scooters and bring service dogs to their assignments. Who stay up all night writing captions to make deadline, or rise in the wee hours to make an early assignment. Who show compassion when photographing those in the midst of turmoil and tragedy.

They have the privilege and responsibility of having a front row seat to history. It is through their eyes that we’ve built the richest visual archive of Latino Life in the Bay Area.

Juan Gonzales, fundador y primer editor del periódico El Tecolote, por ser un pionero de los medios. Contra viento y marea, dirigió a un grupo de jóvenes latinos enojados para enfrentar un panorama mediático hostil a las personas de color en las redacciones. Él ha demostrado a varias generaciones en nuestra comunidad lo que es posible cuando nos vemos reflejados con dignidad y precisión. Gracias por ser el Gran Búho.

A mi Tecofamilia de redacción: el Editor en Jefe, Alexis Terrazas; el Editor de textos en inglés, Atticus Morris; la Editora y Traductora al español, Katie Beas; y el ex Editor Gerente, Greg Zeman, y a nuestro editor del Tecocalendario Alfonso Texidor (1946-2014) y a la arquivista de fotografías Linda Wilson. Gracias por el aliento, por confiar en mi visión estética y mis ideas, por respaldar mis informes, por el apoyo emocional durante los altibajos que la vida me ha arrojado a lo largo de mis diez años en este periódico, por alentarme cuando estoy en mi mejor momento, y aguantarme en mi peor momento. No podría imaginar una mejor familia de redacción.

Y lo más importante, a los fotógrafos que han dado tanto de sí mismos para obtener las fotografías más impactantes, íntimas y hermosas que han adornado nuestras páginas. Fotógrafos que han sacrificado tiempo con sus seres queridos, que quemaron horas en el transporte público, inhalaron humo fotografiando incendios, que fueron rociados con gas lacrimógeno durante el movimiento Occupy, rociados con pimienta durante los disturbios de derecha o golpeados por los agentes del alguacil en el Ayuntamiento.

Quienes suben escaleras y andamios para obtener la toma, quienes toman transbordadores, trenes, scooters y traen a sus perros de servicio a sus asignaciones. Quienes han permanecido despiertos toda la noche escribiendo pies de fotos para cumplir con la fecha límite, o quienes se han levantado en las primeras horas para hacer una asignación temprana. Quienes han mostrado compasión al fotografiar a aquellos en medio de la agitación y la tragedia.

Tienen el privilegio y la responsabilidad de tener un asiento de primera fila para la historia. Es a través de sus ojos que hemos creado el archivo visual más rico de la Vida Latina en el Área de la Bahía.
