SPOTLIGHT ON

ALLEN PHAM DISTRICT TREASURER 2014-2015

Hey, Jade Jaguars! For those of you that do not know me yet, my name is Allen Pham and I am so honored to be your 2014-2015 KIWIN’S District Treasurer. I am currently a junior attending… L WHAT? You guessed it, La Quinta High School! I am so excited to see the awesome spirit that Jade will bring this upcoming year. As we step into the term, I would like each and every one of you to see me as not a superior, but as a peer and a friend who will always be open to talk to you no matter what. So, with that, let me tell you just a little bit more about myself! First, I would like to say that I am addicted to two things in life: frozen yogurt and geography. When I am not out volunteering, studying, or fundraising, I am usually seen with a Yogurtland cup in my hand. Last December, I finished about 350 ounces of yogurt in 3 weeks and I received a Platinum Rewards Card, which if you don’t know, is a really big thing. A little fun fact about me – I can name all 196 countries of the world, their capitals, and their flags. Weird, I know, but I am a major history and geography trivia junkie, so quiz me! As a fellow member of KIWIN’S, I can tell that 2014-2015 is going to be a great year for Jade. I love your LTG Elaine Cheng. Each and every one of you, whether you are from Hercules, Oakland, or Richmond, have the power to shape the future of this organization and promote its dedication to service. Just seeing how hard your clubs have worked to raise money during ELIMINATE Week makes me extremely proud of this division’s accomplishments. Believe it or not, Jade has always blown me away in every single way possible since freshmen year; I have always done the Oakland cheer at DCON since freshmen year even when I barely knew anything about KIWIN’S! So now that you’ve gotten to know a little bit more, I hope that I will get the chance to meet each and every one of you. Keep up the good work, appreciate your LTG Elaine, and I hope to see all you Jaguars soon! Always making it rain, Allen Pham P.S. Hi Wilbert, Nancy, and Shawndy! Hi Elaine...

CERENA NGUYEN FROM

Farewells

Hey Jade Division! My name is Cerena Nguyen and I am the Immediate Past Jade Lt. Governor. I really can't believe my years with KIWIN'S is finally coming to an end. I remember during the beginning of my term, I had so many ideas and so many things I wanted to change within our division. There were times where I felt useless because I felt really unmotivated. Despite the small unfortunate fallback, I created so many memories with you all! Thank you for always supporting me throughout this past year. Thank you for letting me serve as your Jade Lt. Governor 2013-2014. Because of you, I was able learn so much more about our organization. Because of you, I've been exposed to new opportunities no one else could have. The Kiwanis Family will always have a special spot in my heart. Again, my name is Cerena Nguyen and I am the Immediate Past Jade Lt. Governor. Love, Cerena Nguyen IP Jade Lt. Governor

Meet the Presidents of

Jade 2014-2015 Hey there Jaguars! My name is Nicolette Cruz and I’m the president for Hercules High KIWIN’S for the 2014-2015 term. I am an incoming Sophomore. Despite being an underclassman, I believe that I am capable of handling this position and making my home club proud. How I joined KIWIN’S was pretty much by chance. My friend asked me to come with her to drop off something to one of her teachers. To be honest, I didn’t really want to go with her because it was lunch and I just wanted to eat. It’s a good thing I went with her though. Turns out, we walked into KIWIN’S having one of their meetings. I never heard of this club before. My first guess was that it was a club about kiwis, but that didn’t really seem legit. I wondered, “What was this club?” I walked up to one of the officers and asked her. I ended up joining after she explained it to me and now that I look back at that moment, joining was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Throughout this year as a general member, I have already learned and experienced so many great things. I’m grateful for all the opportunities I have done thanks to this organization. In the beginning, I was this awkward and shy girl that was too embarrassed to do cheers or do anything for that matter. I’m not going to lie, I can still be awkward at times, but I am happy to say that this club has helped me become more outgoing and passionate for serving my home, school, and community. I was able to gain and meet new friends through KIWIN’S, but that’s not the main reason why I will continue serving. KIWIN’S has already impacted my life for the better and I want to be able to show people that this organization has many things in store for them then just another way to hang out with their friends. You gain character building, leadership, pride in making a difference in your community, and most of all, another family. My dedication and drive to make a difference and make a name for myself in this organization is out of this world. I’m still getting used to the transition I made from general member to president. You have so many people depending on you and hoping you’ll do your best. It’s a good thing I won’t be running this alone. I have a team backing me up and helping me through this journey. I can already tell that the 2014-2015 term will be amazing. This is only the start of my journey and I hope you guys can stay and be part of all the memories I make. What do you say? Let’s be friends and make a difference together!

Hi, my name is Tierra Lu and I am the president of Oakland High School’s KIWIN’S. I have been in KIWIN’S since freshman year and I loved every moment of it. From the socials to the service, I have to say that KIWIN’S has the best people out there, which explains why I chose to be president: to inspire more people to join this amazing organization. Let’s have a great year!

Meet the Presidents of

Jade 2014-2015 HELLO JADE!!!!!!!! My name is Jacqueline but every one calls me Jackie. As upcoming president of Richmond highs kiwins 2014-2015. I would like to tell you a little bit about my self. Where to begin there is just so much ill try to shorten it. I’m a current junior upcoming senior this year! Class of 2015! Lets make h15tory this year Kiwins! I could be shy at first, though many people are shocked when I tell them that. Dreaming big on becoming a famous comedian one day! AHAH JUST PLAYING! See I have my jokes!!! I am super nice, hardworking, and easy to get along with! Although there might be a few bumps on the road I manage to pick myself up even stronger. I am super excited this upcoming year of Kiwins with my fellow officers. I would love to have more friends! So if you see me say hi What’s up JADE!!!! My name is Brandon Martinez, I am a junior at Richmond High, and I am Co-ed president of Richmond’s KIWIN’s. I am also Student Body President, just thought I would let you know that. I am also a big nerd, I love freaking science, particularly in biotechnology and biochemistry because it is awesome. I am also in love with old music like Frank Sinatra and Santos and Johnny. Let me tell you how I became part of KIWIN’s. I have been part of KIWIN’s for the past three years, marking my fourth year my senior year. I first heard of KIWIN’s my sophomore year but I really did not pay much attention to the club because I did not know what the purpose of the club was. That until the president of the club, Pearla Ponce, told me what the whole premise of the club was and the type of events and celebrations they make toward the end of the year. She also told me the club’s mission and so I felt like helping out. One of the events that stood out to me the most was going to the soup kitchen every first Monday of the month. This event stood out from the rest because as a child, I remember that my mom would take us to the soup kitchen every time we did not have food at home. Once I started volunteering at the soup kitchen as a cook, I felt closer with my community that once feed me in times of hardship. More than anything, I began making more friendships and created stronger bonds with friends, because that’s what KIWIN’s is, it’s about creating friendships with not only your school’s club but also the whole division and having fun while helping your community. P.S, I am not a hipster, my friends tell me I am but I’m not and if you love nutella or Michael Jackson I think we will get along just fine.

Wassup in Jade Division? KIWANIS ONE DAY: Camp Arroyo KIWIN’S is an ohana that does service together. But it’s not only the youth that serve their communities. During Kiwanis One Day, the Kiwanis that constantly support and encourage the youth to serve their communities came out to bond and appreciate community with us. Camp Arroyo is a camp for kids with disabilities or illnesses. It’s like a world without judgment, but full of support for the children and family who have to endure struggles others might not have to. While at Camp Arroyo, KIWIN’S members and Kiwanis helped to sand picnic tables and repaint them for the kids. -Crystal Huang, Oakland Vice President

Members of KIWIN’S participated in a cleanup to help the community keep the creek and their streets clean. They went through the streets and to Wildcat Creek picking up garbage along the way and learning new things about trash. They went into separate groups with two leaders and multiple volunteers throughout the whole day. Before going to Wildcat creek they walked through different streets and picked up trash along the way. Once getting to the creek the members watched a presentation by Aqua Team interns. After the presentations they walked along the creek and picked up garbage. The cleanup ended a success as the members picked up nearly twenty garbage bags altogether. -Elizabeth Vargas, Richmond Historian

Every month we have an event where we go to the GRIP Soup Kitchen and help out there. This is where we prepare and serve food to everyone who needs it at the GRIP Soup Kitchen in Richmond, CA. We prepared parts of the dinner, so we prepared gravy and the potatoes. Then around 5PM, we served the food to everyone who came in to get food.
