’ve always loved the change of seasons, and for me autumn signals a time to slow down a little, before it all gets a bit crazy during the build-up to Christmas. I like to embrace everything this time of the year offers, from bracing walks in nature to heartier dishes and cosy evenings indoors as the nights draw in. This issue covers all things Editor autumn too. Our cover girl Gillian’s home has all the hygge vibes with a log burner taking centre stage in her stylish Mid-Century style living room, find it on page 14. Whether this is purely for aesthetics 1 or for work purposes, it is time to style your desk to the max. I’m Gillian Roe and I’m married to John. We live with our two children, Bella and Angus, along with our whippet, Ziggy.
Where I live
My home is a threebedroom detached 1960s chalet-style house on the south coast of Hampshire.
What I wanted to change
The previous owners had modernised the interior poorly and very cheaply, so we wanted to start afresh.
How I made it my own
I’ve decorated every room bringing in my two favourite design styles; Scandinavian and Mid-Century, while adding plenty of handmade touches to make it feel like our own home.
My favourite part
Now it’s been opened up the kitchen/diner is the heart of our house. It’s wonderful to be able to cook and dine all in one space.

Dining area
Gillian chose Valspar’s Empirical Grey for the feature wall in the dining room and has combined both Scandinavian and Mid-Century furniture to add character to the space. ‘I wanted a colour that would stand out against the white walls and draw attention upwards towards the original panelled ceiling,’ she explains. ‘Luckily this room gets a lot of natural light so I wasn’t worried about the grey being too dark or overpowering.’ To provide additional storage to the kitchen, made-to-measure shelves have been fitted along the righthand wall to display cookbooks and link the two spaces together.

Simple floating shelves fit neatly into the corner of the kitchen. ‘I spent a long time looking for a unit to fill this space, but in the end John and my dad built them from white ContiBoard from B&Q!’
My story ...
Having lived in Leeds for 14 years, John and I decided to relocate to the south coast while the children were still young. I grew up in Hampshire and the area has lots to offer for young families, such as good schools and transport links, as well as being perfectly located nearby to both the sea and the stunning South Downs. While house hunting, we stumbled across this 1960s property which was on the market for an incredible price as it was a bank repossession. It was much cheaper than it should have been and it gave us a huge amount of space for our budget. We fell in love with the quirky original features and the abundance of natural light, even though the interior décor wasn’t to our tastes. The previous owners had modernised the house with cheap laminate flooring and a badly fitted kitchen, so a lot of our renovation budget was spent putting right their bad DIY and restoring the character that had been lost. We also had to replace old, leaking windows and update the central heating and electrics which all added up. Our main constraint was working around a limited budget, as not having the money to do everything in one go meant we had to be creative and tackle one room at a time. When it came to the interior, my love for Scandinavian style was a big inspiration and I’ve mixed in Mid-Century pieces too, to embrace the period of the property. We have lots more plans for the house going forward, but it’s wonderful to look back and see how far we’ve come since we’ve moved in. We’re not sure what the next project will be but it’s exciting to think what that could be. 16 homestylemag.co.uk
Kitchen
Creating an open-plan kitchen/diner was high on the couple’s priority list and a year after moving in they knocked down the wall between the existing kitchen and small adjacent dining room. ‘The reconfigured layout has completely changed the way we use the space as a family and it’s far more practical,’ says Gillian. ‘We went for a sleek and simplistic design, with quartz worktops and T-bar handles, and invested in a Rangemaster dual-fuel cooker as both John and I love to cook, and that was important to us,’ says Gillian.

‘I fell in love with this Marimekko wallpaper and its graphic print has a very retro feel,’ says Gillian. The upcycled spindle back chair adds interest to the hallway, as does the hanging planter and white pendant light, which brings the scheme together. Having chairs dotted around your space can make it feel more welcoming and it adds a point of interest to awkward corners.

With limited space, the narrow console table from Habitat fits snugly into the hallway. It also hides the unsightly radiator, making a more interesting feature out of it. Gillian has added a traditional-style mirror and a lamp, which adds a splash of colour to her entranceway. She also uses the space underneath the console for storage. November 2018 17

‘With an English degree and many years spent working in a bookshop, it’s no doubt I’ve built up a large book collection!’ laughs Gillian. ‘Ikea’s Ekenaset armchair has turned this living room spot into a cosy reading nook.’ Bright cushions and a throw adds colour and also brings the Mid-Century look together.

One of the first structural changes Gillian and John made to the house was removing a dated boxed-in TV unit around the chimney breast to uncover the original fireplace. ‘The asymmetrical design is so quirky and it was completely hidden by the previous owners,’ Gillian says. ‘We then installed a modern Morso woodburning stove to act as a focal point in the room and heat the space during winter.’ Gillian has created zones within the living room, with a cosy sofa area in front of the fire and a reading and crafting corner complete with an Ikea Ekenaset chair.’

She made this autumnal garland using scraps of coloured felt to decorate her living room mantelpiece. As a keen crafter, Gillian enjoys making pretty things to display in her home.
Create a kitchen/diner l Knocking down the wall
between your kitchen and dining room is generally an affordable way to create an open-plan space, if extending the footprint of your house isn’t feasible in terms of land or budget. Reconfiguring the layout is a good option.
l Begin by speaking to an
architect to find out whether it’s possible to knock down the existing wall and to seek general advice; this will depend on its structural support.
l Building Control will need
to be notified of any structural changes taking place on the property and they will ensure that building regulations have been met. They will arrange for an inspector to visit the site as the work progresses.
l Depending on the work

‘My parents bought this dressing table about 30 years ago for my childhood bedroom when I was growing up and it’s stayed with me ever since,’ says Gillian
Master bedroom
Keen to design a calming and tranquil space to unwind in, Gillian has kept the bedroom scheme fresh and uncluttered, with a strong Scandinavian influence. She painted the floorboards white throughout the whole of the upstairs and has added interest with framed prints, houseplants and a curated display of accessories.
‘The bathroom is the final room to be tackled but it’s functional for the time being,’ explains Gillian. ‘We would ideally like to rip out the bath and install a large walk-in shower instead, and replace the existing tiles with something lighter to brighten up the small room.’ Orla Kiely accessories jazz up the neutral bathroom for the time being until it’s time for a total refurbishment.
What I learned... l Don’t rush into decorating as soon as you move in; spend some time living in the room to see how it’s going to be used and gather together lots of inspiration. l Use Instagram to collate ideas and talk to other like-minded people. There are so many amazing accounts to follow and to get inspiration from. l When it comes to big items, don’t scrimp on quality. Always invest wisely in long-term pieces like sofas and dining furniture, as these will need to be able to stand the test of time against daily wear. Turn to page 128 for stockist details

Download the different leaf templates from homestylemag.co.uk. Print onto paper and cut out. Take the first sheet of coloured card and fold in half. Line up the straight left-hand side of the first template on the fold, then draw around it with a pencil and cut out. Open the shape and press it flat. Working from the bottom straight edge, score lines horizontally across the paper shape, 1cm apart. Then make accordion folds along the scored lines. Fold in half and glue the inner folds together to form a leaf shape, leaving a small hole at the bottom. Repeat to make other leaf shapes in different autumnal colours. Thread them onto a length of string, knotting each in place to secure, then drape from a mantel.

I’m Kerry Wilson, a mortgage advisor, and I’m married to Doug, an animator. We have two dogs, Oscar and Jake.
Where I live
My home is a threebedroom 1930s semi in Stockport. We’ve lived here since November 2015.
What I wanted to change
The bathroom was looking a bit tired and the garden needed attention, but other than that it just required some TLC.
How I made it my own
I love a gallery wall, and have livened up the hall and landing with a geometric paint effect. We’ve also added plenty of colour.
My favourite part I really like our cosy living room as it’s probably the space that best reflects my personality. Also, the walls have lots of pictures that are special to us.

Dining area
‘I wanted to maximise the space in here and make it more sociable rather than it being a walk-through room to the kitchen. Luckily we found a nice table that seats six to eight people as we love having friends and family over. Having benches means it can be pushed back when we need more space too. ‘The chimney breast was already grey but the fire surround was a horrible shade of cream so I painted it teal. Everyone thinks we’ve put tiles on here, but it’s actually a tile-effect wallpaper.’

My story ...
For the past seven years my husband Doug’s job as an animator took us all over the country – so it’s been fantastic to finally stop renting and buy our first home. When he got a job in Stockport, I already knew the area as I’d previously worked here for a year in retail management. I’ve since trained as a mortgage advisor so can work anywhere and was happy to move back to the area. As we’d moved around so much, we never spent a lot on furniture so had quite a mish-mash of everything we’d accumulated. It seemed like the ideal time to get rid of every bit of furniture we owned, start again from scratch and buy good quality pieces. Then we set to redecorating, we also partially replaced the bathroom and revamped the garden with new fences, gravel and decking. It’s hard to pin down my style but I do love pushing the boat out with a pop of colour. I enjoy a good gallery wall and having plants in the house to bring the outside in. Now that I’m expecting a baby in January, we know we’ll move back to Worcester in the West Midlands where both our families still live, but for now we’re pretty settled and have built up a good friendship group so we’d be happy to stay for a few more years. I am already building up ideas for the future, including a kitchen/diner with plenty of space for people to socialise while I’m cooking. It’s important to me to have a very family centric space, and home. 28 homestylemag.co.uk
Living room
As several walls were already painted grey, Kerry and Doug were happy to work around the existing colour scheme. ‘Doug loves blue which works really well with grey, so that’s our base,’ says Kerry. ‘We also added a few pops of orange and pink in the gallery wall and cushions for contrast.’ To put her own stamp on the room, Kerry stripped the gaudy floral velvet wallpaper on the wall that’s by the stairs, painted it blue and wallpapered the little niche shelf.

Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold spray paint has given this Ikea shelving unit a new lease of life as a snazzy bar area. ‘If I can upcycle rather than replace, I would always prefer to do that,’ says Kerry, who also painted the Hobbycraft letters to spell out Cheers with tester pots, to match the living room scheme. The blue and gold ribbon garland adds a fun touch.
Kerry painted this wall in a Valspar paint shade that was colour matched to Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue, and added palm leaf wallpaper from B&Q into the niche shelf. ’It’s full of wedding and hen do pictures, as well as a Wilson Family sign we got from Dotty Dolittles,’ she says. If you’ve run out of display space, don’t forget the tops of wall cabinets and opt for plants that drape down. Try Parlane’s artificial Hoya Linearis at £22 from Debenhams for a similar look. This is also a good tactic for disguising or prettying up a boiler or other practical elements of a kitchen or utility room.
Kerry’s made the most of every corner, even squeezing these rustic display shelves into a tight spot in the kitchen. Kerry didn’t have any houseplants at all a year ago, but she’s now a big fan and has sourced a variety of planters from Stupid Egg, HomeSense and B&Q to display them.

How to revamp a kitchen without replacing it l The simplest way to
transform a dated kitchen on a budget is to paint the cupboard doors. You don’t have to have real wood units either, as you can use a laminate primer and then pick an on-trend shade such as dark blue or grey for an instant update.
l If you hate your splashback
tiles, why not experiment with tile stickers? SirFace Graphics has some great Moroccan-style designs and a pack of 24 is just £15.
l New vinyl flooring is another
quick and easy way to achieve a big change for a small outlay. Fitting costs are so much lower than having tiles laid. Try Zazous and Burts for some striking funky designs.
l Taking out one or two wall
cupboards and replacing them with shelves can also have a big impact. It can make the space feel more open. And, of course, it gives you the opportunity to create a stylish shelfie with plants, accessories and crockery.

The kitchen units were already in the house when the pair moved in. ‘Although they’re not what I would’ve necessarily chosen myself, they’re perfectly fine so we didn’t feel the need to change them. The only thing I really didn’t like was the floral wallpaper so I painted the walls in Valspar’s Aquamarine instead, and added new lighting. My dream kitchen would have a real wood worktop, dark wood units with scaffold board shelving above.’ November 2018 31

Kerry redecorated this room in her signature blue. ‘The headboard was put in by the previous owner and has lights behind it,’ says Kerry. ‘It’s quite big but matches some of the other woodwork in the room, so we have worked around it. I sometimes drape it with twinkly bistro lights, but more recently have hung a lovely macramé wall hanging to give it a boho feel.’

‘My style has changed over the years to reflect us both’ Kerry felt her hallway and landing were boring and bland, so was inspired by Instagram to experiment with a geometric design. ‘The paintwork towards the bottom of the wall needed touching up but I couldn’t get an exact match,’ she says. ‘So I decided to create a zigzag pattern using Cottage Door by Valspar. It’s been finished with copper washi tape to cover up imperfections.’
The compact bathroom was looking a bit tired when Kerry and Doug first moved in, so they replaced the bath, shower and screen while keeping the toilet, wall tiles and flooring. ‘It’s such a small room that we couldn’t really change the layout, so we just did a quick fix instead and it’s made a big difference. I use the windowsill to show off plants.’
What I learned... l I’ve become braver – I’ll try anything once. You can learn to do most things if you set your mind to it, and YouTube is brilliant for simple DIY jobs. l Don’t let anyone’s opinions sway you from doing what you want; not everyone can have the same vision, and it’s not a crime to mix styles. l Redecorating does not have to cost the earth. We painted old radiators the same colour as some walls to update them and to blend them in. We also used tile-effect wallpaper, to update our fireplace. Turn to page 128 for stockist details

Marbled cushion
Kerry’s fully embraced colour in her home, and she loves a bold cushion or two. Try this creative idea for injecting some glam into your own pad Top Tip
Want a cushion in a jiffy? Use a ready-made, unpatterned cushion instead. It doesn’t need to be white, choose a light coloured pastel shade to enhance the effect.
You will need Q White cotton fabric Q Measuring tape Q Scissors Q Shaving foam Q Large tray or container Q Fabric paint Q Skewer Q Cardboard Q Sewing machine Q Cotton thread Q Pins

Measure and cut out one 42cm x 42cm square and two 42cm x 30cm rectangular pieces of fabric. Spray shaving foam on a tray or container and use a piece of cardboard to spread it evenly. Add a few drops of fabric paint in colours of your choice and use a skewer to create the marble effect. Take the square of fabric, lay it over the marble foam, and press down gently. Remove the fabric and scrape off the excess foam with cardboard. Allow to dry, then wash. Meanwhile, take one of the rectangular pieces of fabric, and fold and press a double hem along one of the 42cm sides with an iron. Sew in place, and repeat with the second piece. Lay the rectangular pieces on top of the dry, marbled square piece, with hemmed sides overlapping each other, and pin in place. Sew all the way round. Turn the cushion cover out and iron flat. Then pop the cushion pad inside.

is using nail varnish to create a similar look on anything from glass and wood to metal and cardboard. Simply fill a bowl with enough water to cover your item, and begin dropping in the polish. Metallic vanishes work particularly well for a luxe finish. Continue, adding more colours, as desired, and swirl them about with a lolly stick. Submerge your item, then remove from the water. A thin layer of the varnish will have coated it. Leave it to dry and voila!

How I made it my own
As the space is small but open-plan I knew I wanted to keep it light with a flow throughout. My first port of call was adding texture and artwork. The rest fell into place.

‘The original concept for this room was a Scandi look, but I wanted more warmth and texture to make it feel cosy. There is a bit of a global bohemian theme too with touches of gold throughout. It was a really challenging space to decorate as the double aspect windows are floor-to-ceiling. I think keeping the palette light has helped conceal this and I chose a grey French Connection for DFS sofa which can be easily updated with cushions and throws.’

My story...
I found my home totally by chance, my manager who I’ve worked with for years lives in the area and noticed it being built. I tried in vain to get an appointment to view the property but it was very popular with nearly all flats being secured straight away. I was abroad when I received the email offering viewings and sale of the showhome and managed to book one straight away for any time I could get! I didn’t end up in that one, but by chance another came up the very next day when a mortgage had fallen through. So I count myself very lucky. I was the final resident to move in in June 2013 and loved the space instantly. I spent hours looking for inspiration on making the most out of small spaces and the first room I worked on was the living room – originally opting for a very dark grey paint on the wall that the gallery wall is on. I lived with this for years but it didn’t quite work. I updated the room in spring 2016 with a bit of help from my parents. I painted it back to white to make the most of the light, and added a lighter grey feature wall on the largest wall. It gave the room a new lease of life. Then it was onto the kitchen; I added white metro tiles with dark grout and the feature chalkboard wall. When Dan moved in we needed more storage, so we went for large wardrobes in the bedroom. In the future, we would love some big open shelving in the living area and to paint the bedroom, but as we’re saving for our wedding it has taken a back seat. Our plan is to sell up in the next few years and I can’t wait to get stuck into a bigger property. 40 homestylemag.co.uk

plan space keep the walls predominantly one colour. It creates a natural flow and helps to make it feel larger. Louise made a conscious decision to keep theirs mainly white, after opting for dark colours initially.

‘The narrow shelves are a clever Ikea hack – I just used an upturned Mosslanda picture ledge to create some mini open shelves for my jars and cookbooks.’ Little touches like this adds interest and personalisation to a new-build property, on a budget.
‘I love big country kitchens with open shelves and metro tiles so having a stark, new-build kitchen was slightly challenging to make it feel cosy, and as it sits right off the living area I knew there had to be a flow. I also didn’t want it to look cluttered. I loved that the units were a mix of black and white. In keeping with the colours of the living space I added metro tiles with a dark grout, which has made the space look much more finished.’
‘People always compliment us on this space, but it isn’t the easiest for mass entertaining!’
The chalkboard feature wall Louise added around the cooker is a real statement and as this is positioned in a narrow, selfcontained space it doesn’t look dark or imposing. The couple use it as a holiday planner as well as a countdown to their wedding!

‘I picked up the entryway console table from HomeSense – as it’s white with a Mid-Century/ Scandi style it ticks all the boxes. The Ikea Stockholm mirror is my favourite piece as it opens up the space, it also gives you a glimpse of the gallery wall opposite. I picked up the industrial filing drawers from a Graham & Green sample sale.’
Bedroom

‘We’re still working on the bedroom and have been debating whether we should paint the wall behind the bed or do a half and half wall throughout. I just love the look of these and you don’t have to fully commit to colour! This room has fast become one of my favourite spaces due to the picture ledge above the bed; I love swapping this around and it’s made the white feel more considered. The real challenge has been the odd shaped walls, which creates a dark nook by the doorway so we opted to keep the walls white.’
The main pops of colour in the room are green as it’s Louise’s favourite colour. She’s also a huge fan of a banana leaf print so this cushion was actually the starting point for the room, while the Next bed takes centre stage

What I learned...
l My main mantra is to invest in pieces that are timeless and that will last. Wooden furniture and a sofa are never bad investments. But I also love sourcing purse friendly home accessories and textiles. l Look for styles or themes that you love which work with your current pieces – whether it’s metallics or a particular colour – and work these details throughout. l My home style has totally evolved, I have always loved an eclectic mix but my previous rented properties have been shabby chic and retro in style. Louise knows the space-enhancing effect of a mirror in small spaces, and the statement piece in her open-plan living area adds wow factor too

Remove the backing board from the frame. Take out the glass and discard but set the black frame aside. Arrange hexagon mirror tiles on the backing board in a random pattern. When you are happy with the design, stick each in place with double-sided tape. Replace the tiled backing board inside the frame. If you fancy adding even more personalisation, you could paint the edges of the frame or even the backing board to make the mirror tiles stand out more. To create a honeycomb patterned pinboard instead, use a sheet of cork in place of the backing board. Make sure you leave plenty of space in between your mirror tiles so you can pin items. For added decorative detail you can add a three-dimensional edge to your hexagons using Pebeo Cerne Relief. This fine-tipped paint outliner creates a lovely raised stained glass window effect. Once you have stuck down the tiles, simply draw around each edge for added texture.

I’m Claire Wainwright, a teacher, and I live with my husband Mark, a traffic officer.
Where I live
My home is a twobedroom maisonette in a detached Victorian building in Pudsey, West Yorkshire. We’ve lived here since June 2015.
What I wanted to change
We wanted to add colour and pattern, as well as opening up the kitchen as we had nowhere to sit and eat.
How I made it my own
Every room has a standout feature. In the master bedroom and bathroom it’s bold wallpaper, while in the living room it’s the dark green walls.
My favourite part
It’s definitely Mark’s pop art mural in the kitchen/ diner. Everyone who comes round is so impressed that he created it himself and it’s a real talking point.

‘The best thing we did was knocking through the hallway, kitchen and bathroom to make an open-plan kitchen/diner. Luckily, the walls weren’t structural and our builder recommended a joiner who did all the work. We got four kitchen quotes ranging from £7,000 to £16,000 but Kitchens by Design in Leeds was the cheapest and we saved money buying appliances online. In previous homes I had lots of kitchen equipment on display, but this time I wanted a really clean and minimalist look. My vision was dark grey matt handless units, a sociable island, a dining area where the bathroom had been, and the sink by the window.’

My story ...
We’ve always loved Pudsey in Leeds as it’s full of traditional Yorkshire stone terraces with very few new builds and lovely pockets of green space. As we were so keen to live here, we sold our threebedroom semi on the other side of town to buy a two bedroom maisonette in a Victorian building. Being on two storeys it feels like a house rather than a flat and we were never bothered about having our own garden anyway. Although the décor was a bit bland and plain for us, we loved the traditional features and could see the potential for making it more open-plan. After spending a year gradually redecorating, adding new carpets and having bespoke wardrobes made for our bedroom and landing area, we addressed the problem kitchen which was too small for a table. Since we already had a bathroom on the top floor, it made sense to knock through the kitchen, hallway and second bathroom to make one big kitchen/diner. Our style has always been quite bold with lots of pattern and colour, but we’ve definitely got more adventurous and confident over the years. I’ve never wanted a picture perfect showhome or catalogue look, as I prefer mixing old and new, adding upcycled pieces and building up quirky collections. Doing up the flat has been a fantastic creative outlet and it’s made me think about changing my career too. I used to be an interiors consultant and it’s always been a dream of mine to open a lifestyle store, so fingers crossed! 52 homestylemag.co.uk
Walls painted in Fired Earth’s Hustle at 5pm and bar stools from HomeSense add a pop of colour. The industrial style lighting was an idea copied from a bar. ‘There was only one pendant, which wasn’t central, so this works much better to fill the large space,’ explains Claire
After the corridor was removed, a small partition wall was retained to avoid a sheer drop to the stairs and conceal the pipework from the washing machine. A cool vintage snowboard from Mark’s collection makes a quirky wall display by the window. Claire has opted for different coloured stools to add even more pops of colour to her darker kitchen, which livens it up.

Claire chose seamless kitchen units without the need for handles so her solid black scheme was not interrupted. This means it stands out even more with the yellow walls and is brought together perfectly by her black industrial lighting that drapes from the ceiling. As the couple were lucky enough to inherit an original Victorian fireplace, they decided to use the green and red tiles as their starting point for the décor. ‘I love colour and pattern but I never use tester pots,’ says Claire. ‘For several years I worked for paint companies Fired Earth and then Benjamin Moore, so I’m pretty confident making colour choices. I was inspired by a colour called Mid Azure Green by Little Greene, but we sourced a similar version from Valspar.’ 54 homestylemag.co.uk

The corner display features a lightening bolt from Lighting Direct and a picture listing all the places the couple visited on their Honeymoon in Canada. Dotting personalised items like this around Claire’s home really highlights her individual style and makes her house a cosy and welcoming home.
‘Mark used a marker pen to create his own artwork on the top floor landing. ‘He just made it up as he went along,’ says Claire. ‘And he’s left a few spaces for us to put up pictures too’
Picking three or four round mirrors in different sizes gives more impact than one square design. ‘I got the top one from an antiques shop in Conwy, Wales, which I always pop into when visiting friends,’ says Claire. Finding antiques is one of Claire’s guilty pleasures as she loves a bargain.
‘Dark interiors are a big inspiration for me and I’ve portrayed this throughout our home’ Scaffolding board shelves display some of the couple’s favourite pieces such as a vintage clock, a Canadian sign that reminds them of their travels and other bits and bobs that fill the shelving space perfectly. The colour blue is a running theme throughout this room.

‘When we first moved in, the area under the eaves was half cupboards and half open shelves,’ says Claire. ‘So we ripped it all out and the woodwork teacher at my school made new ones. I wanted plain fronted doors but inside there’s an industrial feel with scaffold poles and shelves made from reclaimed floorboards. To finish them off I painted the doors white.’

skills to paint their own wall mural like Mark, but there are plenty of other ways to create a showstopping feature wall. Why not use masking tape to mark out geometric shapes or divide the wall into segments to create an abstract look?

What I learned... l Thinking outside the box can save you money and our kitchen flooring is a great example. Tiles were out of the question as they’d be noisy for the flat below. Thankfully I came across the idea of using large sheets of MDF – it was only £300! l If you’re going to embrace the trend for dark interiors, go the whole hog. At first I was wary but now I’m so glad I committed. l Don’t be afraid to give things a go yourself. Sometimes things can be way out of your budget, so why not get online and learn how to do it yourself. Turn to page 128 for stockist details

Enlarge the pop art image template at homestylemag.co.uk and print on paper. We enlarged ours in four A4-sized sections to fit an A2 canvas. Use tracing paper and a pencil to transfer the design onto the surface of the stretched canvas. Paint the coloured areas with bright acrylic paints, following the image and leave to dry. We used a bright yellow on the hair, blue for the eyes, red for the lips and a pale pink to recreate the skintone. Leave each section to dry before continuing with the next. Once the coloured sections are dry, go over the pencil lines with a fine paintbrush and black paint and leave to dry before hanging.

Word up Overlap tissue paper letters

Lay tissue paper over the first letter, secure with masking tape, then trace out the outline. Cut out. Repeat with more letters in different typefaces and contrasting widths. the letters on a piece of white cartridge paper, until you’re happy with the arrangement. Mark lightly around some of the edges using a pencil, in order to remember the position of each, then remove. Coat the back of the first letter with spray adhesive. Place the letter on the cartridge paper and smooth down. Repeat this process, then gently remove any pencil marks using an eraser.

aximalism is not for the fainthearted. Arguably, the most bold interior movement, it isn’t defined by lots of clutter – rather it’s a ‘no guidelines’ ethos that lets your imagination run wild. We’ve split maximalism up into three key trends that we’re currently spotting on the high street to make things a little easier. Eastern opulence is all about inheriting global influences into your interiors scheme – think intricate patterns, large houseplants and Persian-style rugs. With any maximalism look, it’s best to start with the walls and floors. In terms of flooring stick to one extreme – light or dark. Strip everything back and expose your raw floorboards and give them a quick whitewash or go for an inky stain. Adorn your floor with a heavily textured rug for extra interest. When it comes to your walls, don’t hold back with this trend. A made-to-measure mural is perfect for this and creates such a focal point. You can even hunt down textured wallpaper that mimics an interiors look that you’d see in Japan. If you’re scared of commitment, ditch subtle lighting and furniture and instead opt for a sparkly pendant light and a metallic side table. Finish with Oriental plants and you’re good to go.

If you’re feeling creative, grab some Frog Tape and draft out linear lines and paint the sections different colours to achieve a stylish geometric effect. Paring back your accessories makes for a clutter-free space. Even though the mantra of maximalism is ‘more is more’ – this can be achieved in other ways rather than simply packing in lots of stuff. Look out for unusual furniture in antique shops that will define a particular space. An oblong coffee table with architectural legs is perfect. A standout piece like this will be the talking point of any lounge.

The amalgamation of boho and luxe is a striking combination. Mixing raw materials such as rattan with indulgent fabrics like faux fur and lots of metallics is key to this look. Begin by styling up a piece of furniture such as an accent chair as well as the area surrounding it. Hang an animal skull on the wall, next to a textured macramé and high-shine print. Drape a faux throw over a chair and contrast with a gold cushion. A dark scheme is the perfect backdrop for plants – real or faux, as it immediately breathes life back into a space. Display them at different heights by using a footed plant stand or a hanging planter that you can attach to your ceiling. Just make sure to place your greenery near a window to give them light. Be playful with colours and tones. A popular choice is dark inky blues such as navy and deep teal. If you don’t dare to go black, these are a great alternative.

Give a writing desk a new lease of life as a stylish cocktail area, and be ready for party season! Many of us dream of having the perfect space for entertaining. We spotted this writing desk in a local charity shop and knew that it could be easily transformed.

Remove all the drawers, marking which one was at the top. You need to open up the bottom of the cabinet so it can be used for storage, so if the other shelves were held in place by a divider, remove it now. Ours had one divider, between the middle and bottom drawers, so we used a
screwdriver and hammer to tap it out, opening up the bottom. Sand the cabinet all over. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove any dirt, then apply a coat of primer. Once this is dry, spray the outside of the cabinet and the inside of the fold-down lid with three coats of Mode spray paint – this is a very high gloss paint and will give a lovely polished finish. Leave to dry, then paint the inside with two coats of Annie Sloan chalk paint in Florence. Because the inside of our cabinet was mismatched where the drawers had sat, we panelled the lower storage area with MDF. Begin by measuring the width and height of the back of the storage area. Cut MDF to this size. Trim a length of wallpaper or wrapping paper 5cm larger than the panel on all sides, and use it to wrap the panel, using PVA glue to stick it. Once dry, screw the panel to the back of the cabinet. Add panels to the sides of the lower storage area. Once again, measure the space, this time noting down the depth and height of each side panel. Cut two pieces of MDF, sand the edges, then paint them with

This project involves a lot of spray painting, so always make sure you are working in a well ventilated area and take regular breaks.
Annie Sloan chalk paint in Florence. Once dry, screw each one to one side of the lower area. Finish the lower area by making one final panel, to cover the base. Measure the width and depth of the bottom of the cabinet and cut a piece of MDF to size. Sand the edges, then paint with Annie Sloan chalk paint and screw into position as with the other panels. The lower storage area should now be completely panelled. Next, paint the drawer – we went for a geometric tiled design on ours. Remove the drawer handles, then measure the width of the drawer and divide into three. Divide each of the three sections into four, following the picture for guidance. Mark out each section with masking tape and, allowing sufficient drying time between each section, apply four different shades of blue. Paint the rest of the drawer, and re-attach the handles. Add a strip of lights to the inside back of the fold-down cabinet using Command decorating clips. Finally, add a wine glass rack to the inside of the top of the cabinet. Screw it into position, making sure not to go through to the other side.

HOT LOOK
A fireplace is the perfect focal feature to showcase tiles and express your home’s character in a spot where anything goes. ‘The most important thing is to ensure they are heat resistant,’ says Colin Lincoln Evans, Buying Manager at Tile Mountain. ‘Porcelain, granite, marble, and most natural stone tiles will stand up to the rigours of being regularly subjected to heat, ceramic less so, and you should also use a heat resistant grout and adhesive too.’ Try encaustic for character, slate split face tiles for texture and modern brick styles for glossy colour. If you live in a period property, you could give a nod to its heritage by taking inspiration from its original style. Think outside the fireplace too, ‘there’s a growing trend for tiling alcove areas in the lounge, or behind shelves to make a statement feature,’ adds Sian O’Neill, Head of Marketing at Topps Tiles.

autumn by balancing with warm woods and patinated metals. l There’s absolutely no need to
choose between patterned and plain, you can use mostly plains and then add a splash of pattern, which creates a dazzling visual effect. Pops of colour in your patterns are a great way to make a room feel contemporary, however be sure not to overload your space with colour as this can make it feel cluttered and overwhelming.

Expert advice Sian O’Neill, Head of Marketing at Topps Tiles, tells how to fit tiles step-by-step l Like all DIY, the key to a successful and stress-free tiling project lies in the preparation, ensure you have all the necessary equipment including the correct adhesive, notched trowel, safety goggles, spirit level, tile spacers and a cutter. Next, work out how many tiles you need and the advice here is to measure, measure and measure again! l When you have your tiles, which should include an extra 10% to account for cuts and wastage, prepare the wall to ensure it is smooth, clean, completely dry, dust and debris free.

l Apply an even layer of adhesive to
a notched trowel and, starting from the corner, spread it over the area of two or three tiles at a time. Place the tiles firmly on the adhesive, using spacers to create an even layout. Some tiles may need trimming down to size for certain spaces and this can be easily done using a manual tile cutting machine. l Allow your tiles to dry for 24 hours and then fill the spaces between each tile using grout and a grout float. Pushing the grout deep into the joints will prevent moisture from getting behind the tiles, which is particularly important in kitchen areas. l Once finished, wipe down your tiles with a clean, damp sponge, working downwards at a 45 degree angle.

When tiling your shower area it’s important to find a balance between your dream décor and practicality. Larger, smoother tiles will mean less cleaning, but creating a textured look could well be worth a little extra scrubbing. ‘Most stone, porcelain and ceramic tiles can be used in shower areas without problems,’ advises Louisa Morgan, Marketing Director at Mandarin Stone. ‘It’s important to make sure the underlying walls and floors are water-proofed beforehand. The bathroom was a great space but was in serious need of updating. The previous owners hadn’t lived in the house long so my guess was it was over 20 years old. We wanted to make better use of the space and create a bathroom that we’d enjoy using.

A bit about me
I’m Hayley Fisher, and I live with my partner James, in a two-bedroom Victorian terrace in Lewisham, London, which we bought a year ago.
How I made it work
Luckily, we didn’t need to knock down any walls, or change the layout too much. We had to have new lighting fitted and all the plumbing work was redone. As the house is Victorian, we’re trying to bring all the original features back, so for this reason we chose a suite which has a traditional feel. We used subway-style tiles on the walls and chrome fittings and finishings, with splashes of coral and green for a tropical feel.

My experience…
We moved into our Victorian property a year ago and decided that we wanted to bring some of the character back into the house. We decided that the bathroom would be our first port of call, the layout was pretty good, but everything was bulky and dated so it all had to come out and we wanted to make the room feel lighter and brighter. We initially took a fancy to a rainfall shower, but due to height issues, it was soon ruled out. Eventually we want to turn the loft into another bedroom, so it would have caused too many issues. One of the other main items on my wish list was a roll-top bath. We found this lovely model with chrome claw feet from Burlington and a traditional cistern-style toilet was a must-have too. We both work full-time but we did as much of the work as we could at the weekends, but called in professionals to do the plumbing and electrics. Overall it only took five weeks from start to finish, which was better than we expected. I really enjoyed the process and picking out all the elements to get the right look. As we’d kept the scheme very white I decided to accessorise with brightly coloured towels and greenery. I think it’s made me realise just how dated the rest of the house looks. I’m ready to get going on our next project now!

A bit about me
Hi, I’m Kerrie Mitchell, a wedding photographer. I live with my husband Russell and our Labrador Tagg in a four-bedroom house on the Suffolk border.
How I made it work
We didn’t want to have to walk far in the winter months to access the room, so we decided to knock down a greenhouse near to the house, replacing it with a Scandinavian-style garden room. We worked with the company to design a space which I mainly use as my photography studio. It also provides us with guest accommodation and somewhere to create my wall hangings. The builders put up the shell, but we did all the interior work ourselves.

Office makeover
Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Embrace light by using white coloured furniture. While the white sideboard from Argos blends in nicely with the walls, the textured wave-effect fronts of the doors bring a tactile element to the room and the wooden feature at the bottom of the piece adds further interest. Keeping the bigger pieces such as the desks and sideboard white to match the walls helps make this room feel bigger and brighter.
Opt for stylish and practical accessories. Kerrie uses this Sainsbury’s industrialstyle noticeboard to display an attractive Meylor Goods print and her work, all of which can be easily changed. Kerrie and her friend produce a fun wedding podcast, Get Wed, where they talk all things weddings. Their flyer adds a hint of colour to the display board.
Introduce greenery into your office space. This large house plant is great as it adds interest to the corner of the room and hides away the wall sockets nicely. Instead of using unsightly plastic pots, try using a woven basket as a planter. This not only adds texture and a bohemian feel, it also makes the room feel fresh. My experience…
Once we had decided to go for it we were keen to get the room built as soon as possible, the company called to say they could do the work in a fortnight due to a cancellation! This left us with little time to make big decisions which was quite stressful. We chose the Canopy design with wooden cladding as we wanted something modern. As a photographer, light is hugely important to me so we opted for two floor-to-ceiling windows with French doors at the front. These are double-glazed and finished in slate grey on the outside and white inside. I wanted the interior to reflect my branding and my work so I chose pastel shades with a few pops of brighter colours. Flooring was included in the cost, and we decided on Novara Grey click-lock laminate from Wickes which is practical, but has the feel of a Nordic limed oak wooden floor. We didn’t have much time to source furniture so we had a trip to Ikea and bought the basic pieces. My proudest moment was my first wedding consultation in our newly finished room; my clients walked in and said it felt like actually being in my website which was exactly what I was hoping to achieve. Later on that evening they called to book me for their wedding!

A bit about me
I’m Fiona Thornham, an interior designer at Ikea, and I live with my partner Dan Fields, a nutritionist, in a one-bed cottage in Dewsbury.
As the kitchen’s the first room you walk into, the design needed to make an impact so we opened up the ceiling and added more beams. We went for black units and two black walls, balanced with white marble-effect worktops and two white walls. It’s quite bold but as the ceilings are high, the room can take it.

It’s the feeling I get each time I walk through the front door. It’s remembering how it was the first ever time I viewed the cottage, along with all the memories that I have of restoring it with my dad and Dan. Visually it’s exactly how I wanted it, but to be able to look back and have those memories is very special so I documented it on my Instagram @thecrumblecottage.

Kitchen makeover
Style advice Three simple tricks to try in your own home Chose a breakfast bar with extra storage. Breakfast bars are great for small and large spaces. They can be squeezed into the smallest of kitchens like Fiona’s. ‘It comes in handy for putting out food and plates when we have people around,’ says Fiona. ‘And as it’s a freestanding style, we have the option to pull it out in the future if we decide to get a bigger table.’
Go for a practical yet stylish sink design. A double sink is a much more practical option if you have the space, as you can still pour away liquids if you have one sink full of dishes. ‘I’d always envisaged a Belfast sink combined with the beams,’ says Fiona. ‘The double size wasn’t much more expensive then the single so I went larger as it works better.’
Recycling materials will keep costs low. A sloping roof can be tricky to work around when designing a kitchen but there are plenty of pocket friendly solutions. ‘It would’ve been too costly to have wall cupboards made to measure,’ admits Fiona. ‘Instead we’ve opted for simple, rustic wood shelving with black brackets to blend into the wall.’

My experience…
Our little one-bedroom cottage in Dewsbury may be small but we’ve made the most of the space, especially in the revamped kitchen. I knew every room would need completely renovating, so it made sense to live with my parents near Hull for the first six months. Luckily my dad John can turn his hand to pretty much anything as he has his own property maintenance business. Every weekend we’d work on the house and we all mucked in. Dan varnished all the beams, dad did the plastering and tiling, as well as fitting the kitchen, while I did the painting. The biggest change was removing the kitchen ceiling to expose the sloping roof. We uncovered the big beam in the middle and dad added the smaller ones in the other direction. As I’m an interior designer, I couldn’t wait to start planning the space. Everyone thought we were mad wanting black units and black walls, but it works because of the elements of white elsewhere. We also chose a high breakfast bar instead of a table as it’s just me and Dan most of the time. The room was ready for the new kitchen quite early on, but we waited until the bathroom was done before fitting the units in case they got damaged by building materials. We’re so pleased with what we have achieved!

Preheat the oven to 160°C. Spread the macadamia nuts over the small baking tray, put the tray in the oven and toast for 5-8 mins, until golden. Leave to cool, then roughly chop. Peel and chop the red onion and garlic. Chop the herbs and slice the green beans into 2cm pieces. Snap the tough ends off the asparagus and cut the stems into 1cm pieces. Remove the stems from the kale and roughly chop. Grate the zest of the lemon. Pour the stock into a medium saucepan on a low heat. Add the olive oil to another pan on a medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook for 10 mins until they begin to soften. Add the garlic and stir for another minute. Pour in the rice and toast for a further minute. Turn up the heat slightly and pour in the white wine. Simmer until the liquid has almost evaporated, stirring frequently. Then add the green beans and asparagus to the pan. Add a ladleful of stock at a time, stirring continuously. Wait for the stock to be absorbed before adding the next. After 8 mins, add the peas and kale and cook for a further 6 mins, until the rice is just cooked. Remove the pan from the heat, stir in the herbs, yeast, lemon zest, nuts and butter. Serve immediately.

Rip the stems from the chillies, cut them in half lengthways and remove the seeds if you prefer a milder sauce, and finely chop. Separate the parsley stalks and finely chop, reserving the leaves for later. Stone and chop the olives. Pour 2 tbsp of the oil into the saucepan. Crush in the garlic and add the chillies, parsley stalks, olives and capers and stir for 2-3 mins. Add the ½ tsp of salt and 1 tbsp of the salty brine water from the jar of capers. Leave to cook for a minute, then add the passata. Turn the heat to medium and leave to simmer. Add the spaghetti to a pan of boiling water along with the remaining 2 garlic cloves. Cook until the spaghetti is al dente. Slice the broccoli stems, creating thin strips. Add these to the spaghetti pan for the last 30 seconds of cooking time to soften. Drain the pasta and broccoli in a colander and return them to the pan and pour over the sauce. Chop the parsley leaves and add them to the pan. Pour over 2 tbsp of oil and squeeze over the juice of a whole lemon. Serve immediatey.

Crispy chilli tofu Prep and cook time 55 mins Serves 4 Ingredients Q 280g block firm tofu Q 150g cornflour Q Vegetable oil, for frying Q 2 lemons Q 250ml orange juice Q 100g sweet chilli sauce Q 1 tbsp sriracha or other chilli sauce Q 3 tbsp soy sauce Q 1 spring onion, to serve Q 1 tsp sesame seeds, to serve

Press the tofu in between two clean tea towels, lay it on a plate and put a weight on top. Leave for at least 30 mins to drain any liquid and firm up before you start cooking. Carefully slice the tofu into 1cm wide sticks and spread them out on a board. Sift cornflour over the top, coating the pieces generously. Use tongs to turn the pieces to ensure the tofu is covered on all sides. On a high heat, pour enough oil into the pan to coat the bottom and heat until it makes the tip of a wooden spoon sizzle. Cook the tofu for 5 mins, turning them every minute or so until they begin to golden. Transfer to a plate lined with kitchen paper. Tip away the excess oil and reduce the heat. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice into the pan, catching any pips in your other hand. Add the orange juice, sweet chilli sauce, sriracha and soy sauce and bring to the boil. Simmer for 5 mins until the liquid has reduced to a syrupy consistency. Add the tofu strips back to the pan and stir until fully coated. Continue to cook for 5 mins, then remove from the heat. Sprinkle the tofu with spring onion and sesame seeds.

Cut the peppers in half and remove the stems and seeds, then cut into 2cm chunks. Rip the stems from the chillies, and cut into slices. Slice the mushrooms and the baby corn. Put the pan back on a high heat and add the vegetable oil. When it’s nice and hot, add 100g of curry paste and fry for 2 mins, until the paste deepens in colour. Pour in the coconut milk and vegetable stock and mix everything together. Add the sugar, agave syrup, soy sauce, peppers, chilli, mushroom, baby corn, tomatoes and mangetout. Simmer and stir occasionally. Drain the lychees, if using, and add them to the pan. Bring to the boil and simmer for 7-10 mins, until the vegetables are cooked through. Taste and adjust the seasoning, adding salt, sugar or agave syrup as required. Spoon the curry into bowls, finish by garnishing with a handful of coriander leaves and serve alongside white rice. Enjoy!

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Peel and finely slice the onions and garlic. Cut the peppers in half, cut out the stems and seeds and slice into thin strips. Slice the sun-dried tomatoes. Finely chop the spinach leaves and capers and chop the courgettes into bite-sized chunks. Halve the olives and tomatoes. Put all the vegetables into a lasagne dish and season all over with salt and pepper. Pour over the oil and passata and stir to ensure all the vegetables are covered. Cover the dish with foil and put it in the oven to roast for 30 mins. Take the dish out of the oven, remove the foil, stir everything and put the dish back in the oven for a further 15 mins. Meanwhile, boil the kettle and pour the boiling water into a large pan on a high heat. Add the pasta and a big pinch of salt and cook until al dente, following the instructions on the packet. Drain the cooked pasta through a colander and tip it back into the pan. Take the lasagne dish out of the oven, stir in the basil leaves and pour your freshly roasted veggie sauce over the pasta. Stir so that it’s well mixed and serve.

Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. Heat 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a 20cm ovenproof frying pan or skillet. Add the bacon and cook over a mediumhigh heat just until the fat starts to crisp. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the mushrooms and cook quickly in the residual bacon fat. Remove then add to the bacon and wipe out any excess oil from the pan. Peel and coarsely grate the potatoes, tip onto a clean tea towel, gather the ends of the cloth together and squeeze the excess moisture from them. Scoop into a bowl, add the remaining olive oil, the smoked paprika and garlic granules, and season with salt and pepper. Spread the butter onto the bottom and sides of the pan or skillet.

Tip the grated potatoes into the pan and press to cover the base and sides in an even thickness. Set the pan over a low-medium heat for 5 mins to soften the potatoes on the base, then slide the pan into the preheated oven and cook for 20-25 mins until the potatoes have dried out, become golden and crisped around the edges. Sprinkle the cheese and pour over the cream. Arrange the mushrooms, bacon and cherry tomatoes on top. Crack the eggs into the pan, positioning one in each quarter, and arrange the sliced chorizo around. Sprinkle the thyme leaves on top, season with black pepper and return to the oven for a further 10-12 mins until the eggs are set and cooked but the yolks are still runny. Stick the pan in the middle of the table and tuck in.
Baby leek and spring greens tart Prep and cook time 1hr, plus chilling time Serves 6 Pastry Q 250g plain flour Q Salt and pepper Q 125g unsalted butter, chilled and diced Q 4 tbsp ice-cold water Q 1 tsp cider vinegar Topping Q 150g baby leeks Q 8 spring onions Q 1 tbsp unsalted butter Q 100g shredded spring greens Q 2 medium eggs Q 200ml double cream Q 2 tbsp grated Parmesan Q 125g Taleggio, chunks Q 3 tsp fresh thyme leaves Q 50g blanched hazelnuts Q Salt and pepper Method Tip the flour into a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add the butter, using a palette knife, cut the butter into the flour until they are half their original size. Rub the flour mixture together. Add the water and vinegar, mix until the pastry starts to clump together. Chill for 1 hr. For the topping, trim the leeks and spring onions. Bring a pan of salted water to the boil and blanch the leeks for 1 min then drain and leave. Melt the butter, add the shredded greens, season and cook over a medium heat then set aside. Dust the work surface and roll the pastry out. Line a tin with the pastry then chill for at least 20 mins. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Prick the base of the pastry and line with foil and baking rice. Blind bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 20 mins. Remove the foil and rice and continue to cook for a further 3 mins to dry the base. Whisk the eggs, cream and half of the Parmesan, and season well. Fold in the wilted greens and spoon into the pastry and spread level. Arrange the spring onions and blanched leeks on top and tuck Taleggio around. Sprinkle with Parmesan, thyme leaves and chopped hazelnuts. Bake on the middle shelf for 25 mins.

Mix the ice-cold water with the vinegar and gradually add to the pastry mixture, cutting through with a palette knife and then using Prep and cook time 50 mins, plus your hands to bring the dough together into chilling time a ball. Preheat the oven to 200°C and line three large baking tins with baking parchment. To make the choux put the water and butter in a pan, cover and bring to the boil. Remove the cover and add the flour. Take the pan away from the heat, beat the mixture to a firm paste. Transfer to a bowl and leave to cool for 5 mins. Add the eggs a little at a time, beating well between each addition, until the mix is smooth, glossy and has a ribbon-like consistency. Spoon the mix into a piping bag with a 5mm nozzle. Pipe 75 small rounds evenly onto the baking sheets. Dip a finger in cold water and flatten any peaks. Bake for approximately 20 mins until risen and golden, turning them after 10 mins. Remove from the oven, and pierce the base of each. Return and cook for a further 3 mins to dry out. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. To make the cream, beat the yolks, sugar, flour, zest and juice to a smooth paste. Place the milk in a pan, bring to the boil then pour over the egg mixture, stirring well. Return to the pan and cook over a low heat, stirring until thick and bubbling. Add the extract, transfer to a bowl, cover and allow to cool. Use a piping bag to fill each bun. To stack, place the white chocolate into a bowl and microwave on a medium heat, stirring frequently. Dot a small amount of chocolate at the base on the outside of a cone shaped mould, place a bun on this, then repeat. Work up, drizzling with chocolate and building up the buns until covered. Drizzle the toffee and any remaining white chocolate. Melt the milk chocolate on a medium heat, and dot around the base to fix the flakes.

Pumpkin and hazelnut mini doughnuts Prep and cook time 25 mins Serves 10 Ingredients Doughnuts Q 200g plain flour Q 1½ tsp baking powder Q 1½ tsp ground cinnamon Q ½ tsp ground ginger Q ½ tsp ground nutmeg Q 125g butter, cubed and softened Q 115g caster sugar Q 25g ground hazelnuts Q 1 egg Q 180ml milk Q 110g pumpkin pureé To Finish Q 50g caster sugar Q 1 tsp ground cinnamon Q 25g ground hazelnuts

Preheat the oven to 160°C. To make the doughnuts, place the flour, baking powder and spices in a large bowl and mix together. Add the butter and, using your hands, rub it in until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and ground hazelnuts. Whisk the egg and milk together in a jug and gradually add to the dry mixture, mixing well between each addition, until creamy and smooth. Stir in the pumpkin pureé. Transfer the mixture to a piping bag, snip the end off and fill a mini doughnut mould, allowing roughly 1 heaped tsp of mixture per mini doughnut. Bake for 10-11 mins Meanwhile, place the 50g sugar, cinnamon and ground hazelnuts in a bowl and combine, ready to finish the cooked doughnuts. Remove the doughnuts from the oven, leave in the moulds to cool for a minute, then turn out the doughnuts and toss in the sugar mixture to coat. Serve warm.

Place the apples in a large bowl and cover with boiling water, this will help the toffee stick. Dry well then twist off the stalks and push a lolly stick into the stalk end of each. Place the sugar and 100ml of water into a pan, cook for 5 mins over a medium heat until the sugar dissolves then stir in the vinegar and syrup, then boil to 140°C.

Remove the pan from the heat and, working quickly and carefully, dip and twist each apple in the hot toffee to coat. Allow the excess to drip away then stand on a sheet of baking parchment to harden. Allow to cool completely before eating. The apples can be wrapped and stored in a dry place for up to two days. Tip: If you don’t have a confectionary or sugar thermometer, you can test the toffee by pouring a little into a bowl of cold water, it should harden instantly and when removed, be brittle and easy to break. If it still feels slightly soft, continue to boil it. Make your toffee apples extra special by adding additional decorations to your toffee apples such as chopped nuts and sprinkles, biscuit crumbs or edible stars.
