Editor
As August draws to a close once again I’m amazed at how quickly the huge mass of summer visitors suddenly evaporates and once again the roads become clear and parking is no longer a treasure hunt. It’s difficult to gauge how this summer’s numbers compare with previous years but I’m sure the coming months will reveal which businesses have made enough to weather the coming storm of the hike in the rate of IVA which leaps from 18% to 21% on September 1. Anyway let’s not dwell on such things as it’s still technically summer, at least as far as the weather is concerned although I for one am enjoying the slightly cooler nights. Here in Manilva this time of the year is very important for the municipality’s burgeoning vineyards as it’s harvest time, and to celebrate the event the first weekend of September sees the whole town celebrating the Vendimia. This involves much
partying and consumption of food and wine, but there again this is Spain and goes without saying. For many this wraps up a summer that kicked off with the San Juan Festival and heralds a return to the serious business of making a living. For us at The Resident and its parent company Manilva Media Workshop SLL this certainly rings true and a number of projects that have been on the backburner will be turned up to full heat in the coming weeks and months, but news about that in our next issue which is appropriate as in the next issue we will be celebrating The Resident’s sixth birthday. Well, as it is still summer, I’ll keep this month’s editorial short and sweet as I can hear the beach calling, and after all there has to be some advantage to being self employed, hasn’t there? So until next month.... Editor

Manolo Mesa football field and paddle courts almost ready After several modifications, the project having taken nearly a year to be completed, the first entirely municipal paddle courts and football pitch will soon be ready. Access to the field has been altered, as has the lighting and, perhaps most importantly, seats in the grandstand have
been increased by 500. All this has been completed alongside better access routes and interior roads, improved surroundings and a new lick of paint. The investment comes to just over half a million euros.

Surprise visit for local artist It is sometimes fascinating how chance can play a part in people’s lives. For instance it was chance that local artist David España recently watched a programme on Spanish TV on the work of various nations ambassadors in Spain; it was chance that he’d just recently converted a small local that he owned in Casares into a gallery; it was then chance that a group of people who were visiting Casares a few days later happened to drop into the gallery. How is this fascinating? Well the party happened to be the US Ambassador to Spain, Alan D. Solomont, his wife Susan and a number of staff, who David recognised having seen the TV programme just a few days before.
The Ambassador was so impressed with David’s work, that he purchased a piece on the spot. After a chat and a quick photo opportunity the party went on their way. But this wasn’t the end, later that day David España received a call from the Ambassador to say that he would like to purchase another piece. David España has been painting for over 30 years, and specialises in his own particular style of painting on glass. You can view David’s work at his gallery Studio 54, C/ Villa, (just before the Town Hall), Casares. You can contact David on 619 627 651.
Friends and Neighbours of Marina de Casares On the 14th of August with permission and encouragement from the Casares Ayuntamiento, the club produced its first “Table Top Sale.” The event was held along the promenade and went on late into the night. The magnificent live musical entertainment that was on the beach in the evening included a flamenco cabaret preformed by one of Casares young ladies, accompanied by vocal and music. After the cabaret, dance music and dancing went on well into the following morning. This entertainment provided the “Table Toppers” with captive customer potential that provided a very rewarding evening. On the 17th of August the club had their first coffee morning of the summer this brought 42 members into the air conditioned club room for a cuppa and a chat for an hour or so. They were also able to take away with them the club’s updated programme of events up to the end of January 2013. On Monday the 20th of August there was a 3 course dinner in the club room with Paella Valenciana as the main course
prepared for by a friend of one of the committee members. Dinner started with a mixed salad and finished with fresh fruit, cheese and biscuits, sweets, and cakes. The feedback received has confirmed that a very enjoyable eating experience and evening was had by all. And finally to end the summer season on the 26TH August there was a “Western Night”. The club was transformed into a “Wild West Saloon”. There was country and western music to enhance the atmosphere, table versus table, Black Jack was played under the professional guidance of Diane Marsland, and naturally Texan “camp fire grub to sustain them though the evening The club is on the last days of managing the “library on the beach” for the Ayuntamiento. The Librarians have said that it has not been so busy this year, although they had more visits from children, practicing their English when the English speaking amongst the members were on duty, as well as taking out a book or two.
Casares Bridge Club The club meets every Tuesday at 6.15pm for 6.30pm start. We play Duplicate Bridge at the Community hall located on the Casares road MA8300, 1km. from the A7, and can be found to the right of the first roundabout. We operate a Host system ... players without partners (including visitors) can be accommodated and are most welcome. www.bridgewebs.com/casares/

TENANCY & RENTAL CONTRACTS
Over the past few months, we have received 3 or 4 enquiries on tenancy and rental contracts every week, probably due to the crisis and financial problems people are currently suffering. There are too many tenants not paying their monthly rents and too many landlords desperate with these situations. Unfortunately, more often than not people come to us with no signed rental contract or with tenancy contracts not properly drafted. This is one of the most delicate parts of the Spanish Law, and, therefore, before signing a rental or tenancy document the right guidance and advice is vital. Whether you are a landlord or a tenant, not requesting professional legal advice when you are going to sign a written Rental Contract, or an agreement concerning residential or commercial property, can cause serious problems in the future. For example, a tenant could legally stay in a rental property for up to 5 years. Oral agreements are legally valid in Spain but we strongly recommend you have a written lease that includes appropriate clauses to protect your interests. Although the Spanish Law governs the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords, the Law allows them to establish special clauses and terms in these Rental Contracts, so it is advisable to seek professional guidance and draft the contract in such a way that it reflects perfectly your personal requirements. There are also many points that must be clearly detailed. A part of the contract specifies the name of the landlord and the tenant, the location of the property, the duration of the lease and the due date and amount of rental payment. The agreement can also include any other legal provisions to which both parties agree, such as: •
•
•
Warranty of habitability. A Landlord must provide a safe and sanitary place for tenants. A Landlord can be required to provide fire extinguishers and other such fixtures as ovens, refrigerators, sinks, etc. How communications and notifications of agreements, problems or understandings between landlord and tenant will be resolved. What happens when repairs legally
• • • • • • •
required are not made by landlord or tenant? When, and how much can the landlord increase the rent? Who has the responsibility for the maintenance? Guidelines for any repairs to the house. Is it possible to sub-let the property? Penalties for breaking the lease by the tenant or the landlord. The possibility that landlords or tenants have of passing their rights and obligations on to another person. Who pays; community fees, IBI local property taxes, and home insurance?
It is always better to prevent misunderstandings before signing, please let your solicitor read the lease carefully and suggest deleting or changing any clauses that, in his professional opinion could severely limit your rights, or could prejudice you in some way in the future. Solicitors know the Spanish Law and can also draw up a new lease proposal that suits your needs. The solicitor will also request and organise that the other party signs the contract. Let your solicitor use his knowledge to protect your interests. As an indication, normal legal fees for preparing, revising and negotiating normal residential Rental Contracts are around 300 Euros so it is well worth seeking legal advice to get a first-rate rental contract which will protect your legal rights and prevent possible unnecessary expense in the future. Should you already have a rental problem because your tenant does not pay the rent, or because your landlord wants you leave the property, it is also sensible to take legal advice as soon as possible. From our experience the sooner you take legal action the better, as the longer a problem is left; the more difficult it is to sort out.
Manilva Town Hall occupies the works and installations of the Sabinillas Sports Centre On August 23, 2012, the Mayoress of Manilva, Antonia Muñoz, accommpanied by the Town Clerk, the Director of Discretionary works and two officers of the Local Police accessed the Sabinillas Sports Centre, after coming to the conclusion that the work had been abandoned. The report submitted by the Director of Discretionary works states among other things, the theft and deterioration of materials, basement drains are flooded and pumps can not be used because the electrical works were not completed by the builder.
It is also recommended that the works are completed to the electrical supply by the Town Hall as soon as possible as to avoid flooding in the basement when the rains arrive. The Mayor has instructed the local police to establish a permanent presence to prevent theft of materials and access to the works. Finally, the Town Hall will be holding a plenary session next Thursday to propose to terminate the building contract so as to allow the Town Hall to proceed to complete the works on the Sports Centre and finally open it.

FrightFest returns to Estepona
Kevin Sorbo aka Hercules receives his Unicorn of Honour at last year's festival Every September for the past twelve years Estepona has been the centre of the world of horror and fantasy cinema with the celebration of the Costa del Sol International Fantasy Film Week, showcasing some of the best (and not so best) cinematic works of this genre. This month, from 24 to 29 September, the town plays host to the thirteenth edition of this frightfest with Robert Louis Stevensons 1886 novel on man’s inner conflict between good and evil “The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde” providing this year’s theme. Apart from the programme of screenings including both features and shorts there are a host of parallel activities. The production company La Cruzada Entertainment will create a London street of the late 19th century in the Palacio de Congresos which will provide the perfect setting for a number
of events including the presentation of a commemorative postage stamp in collaboration with the European Philatelic Society “Eurosofi”; the presentation of the books “The Brand of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde” and “New Faery Tales” by DKiller Panda. There will also be exhibitions including: “Horreibols and Terrifics Books – Forges y Azpiri”, “Stamps of Film and Fantasy”, and “Drawing Jekyll”. Competing for this year’s awards are the feature films “Chillerama”, “Drácula 0.9”, “InBred”, “Cinderella, The Ghost”, “The Wisperer in Darkness”, among others. trasfondo del tema eje del festival y se realizarán homenajes a Paco Plaza, Javier Olivares y Theather Properties. Finalmente la Coral Magnum This year’s Fantasy TV award goes to the Antena 3 series “Los Protegidos” and will be received by one of the show’s stars. The show features a group of young people who are brought together because of their special powers (Invisibility, teleki nesis, telepathy, doppleganging, electrical conductivity) and the need to be protected from an agency that seeks to abduct and control them. Very similar to New Mutants but with more concentration on the “family’s” personal lives and how they try to assimilate in a small town where they have to hide their abilities. A statue will be unveiled in honour of the late, great Paul Naschy who was one of the founders of this festival and until his death in November 2009 was a regular at the festival. Finally Estepona’s Magnum Mysterium Choir, as part of their 25 anniversary celebration will perform a concert featuring some of cinemas most iconic themes.
By way of a presentation for the XIII Costa del Sol International Fantasy Film Week there will be a screening at the Plaza de Toros in Estepona, on September 8 from 9.30 pm of the film “Abraham Lincoln, cazador de vampiros” (Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter).

The spinal cord connects the brain to all organs of the body. The brain sends electrical impulses to the spinal cord, and these travel on to their destinations via the peripheral nerves. Between the vertebrae we have intervertebral discs, they give mobility to the spine and help to absorb and distribute any impact to the column. The intervertebral disc is made of two structures: a) The Nucleus pulposus in the center of the disc. 90% of the core is water. At night, the

We enter the month of September, with a further increase in taxes We are in the month of September. Some of us maybe looking forward to the end of the tourist season when our visitors will have returned to their home countries and or to other regions of Spain. We may appreciate the slight drop in temperatures, giving us some respite from the heat. The end of the dreadful fires fanned by our warm westerly winds. Not having to endure being number twenty in supermarket queues. The return of our friends and neighbours, from visits to the United Kingdom and other cooler climates. There is one event that nobody will welcome. That is, the increase in the IVA rates, which will result in augmenting the costs of our provisions, utilities and all services Everyone is aware of the increase from 18% to 21%. There is also to be an increase in the lower rates of 8% to 10% . In the main, the lower rate of 4% on essentials are to remain the same. There will be a raise which unfortunately will affect some essentials lower rates which will soar by 13 and 17%. Some of the higher raises will affect the cost of funeral services and some health and dental products which are not presently exempt from taxes. Banks and mortgage debts Some of our mortgage lenders appear to be acting in an incoherent manner when it comes to mortgage debt. In principle some of the lenders do not seem eager to negotiate with clients who wish to find a solution to the problems they are facing, with their mortgage repayments. A few clients have offered to continue paying their dues but with a shortfall of just almost a couple hundred euro’s. In fact four hundred euro instead of six hundred. The bank after numerous meetings, have decided to offer the mortgage holder the right to give the keys back and remain debt free or to take legal action against him to embargo the property. Defaulters, who had received demands via the courts, to pay the complete amounts owed, are still waiting for up to two years or more for further news. If the banks director no longer wants to talk to you, there will be various reasons for this. The most common being that, they are no longer responsible for your case as the matter is either with
their debt department, in the hands of their lawyers, or they have possibly sold on the debt. If you find yourself in this situation or something similar. Seek assistance to avoid the unexpected arrival of the forces of law to evict you and your family from your home. Reduction on your annual rates If you have been receiving a reduction in the costs of your annual IBI (rates) bill, it will be because you are registered on the padron (census) To continue availing of this decrease, make sure you update your registration at the relevant offices. With their minds on savings, the central government is again looking into the matter of registered inhabitants. Your town hall receives an amount for each legal inhabitant of a town or village. It is advisable to renew your names and those of your family. Make sure that you are registered with your NIE and not your passport. This is to assure that you will be entitled to the discount. In a herniated disc, the cartilage rings that hold the disc in place have several small cracks and the nucleus moves between them causing a bulge, this is called a herniated disc. What is the cause? 1) The most common is due to a sudden heavy strain. For example, heavy lifting causes a herniated disc. 2) Small repetitive micro trauma. This means overexertion that accumulate throughout our lives. Chiropractic spinal adjustments have proven to be safe and effective against

Vet’s Corner
The cost of keeping animals also rises The Andalucian Council of Official Veterinarians warns that the IVA (VAT) hike may cause serious consequences regarding animal and human health. The Andalucian Council of Official Veterinarians wish to raise the awareness of the increased danger to the health of all animals (pets and livestock) that the VAT increase by 13% (from 8 to 21%) can make, especially in veterinary clinics. This increase will mean an extra cost in the domestic economy with consequences that can directly affect the health not only of animals, but also their owners as well as the general public. Article 43 of the Spanish Constitution states: 1. The right to safeguards with regards to health care. 2. Designates that the public authorities are to organize and safeguard public health through preventive measures and by providing the necessary services and concomitant benefits. The law shall establish the rights and duties of all effected. 3. The public authorities shall foster health education, physical education, sports, and the proper use of leisure time. As far as the IVA is concerned, the fulfillment of this constitutional duty, incumbent upon public authorities, was reflected in the exemption from IVA in respect of the provisions of health services in human medicine, and the reduced rate in the case of veterinary services. Undoubtedly, the establishment of the higher rate of IVA for veterinary services is a serious breach of this important constitutional duty on the part of public authorities, which can also cause serious damage to public health. Indeed, given the current economic crisis, the cost of this disproportionate increase in the tax burden will mean an added strain on budgets for pet owners, and this may jeopardize the fulfillment of health programs that affect these animals. It is very likely to reduce vet visits, making it difficult for health checks on pets and can lead to such serious consequences;
the failure to comply with the mandatory vaccination programs, which may lead to the emergence and spread of diseases, furthering the risk to animal and human health. Do not forget that animal diseases such as leishmaniasis, hydatid disease (caused by a type of tapeworm), spotted fever, rickettsiosis, psittacosis, and above all rabies, all of which are transmissible to humans. This will result in the difficulties of early diagnosis and the resulting late detection of animal diseases, thereby favouring their spread and intensity among the animal population, as well as the increased parasite coexistence with humans, as hydatidosis, larvae migrans, external parasites etc. These higher taxes, in addition the current economic woes, are resulting in increased animal abandonment, which, in turn, facilitates the uncontrolled spread of their contagious health conditions. Without the animal welfare groups being able to assume the consequential increase of costs, taking into account the limited financial resources available to them (mostly through private contributions). Finally, do not forget that in today’s society, ownership of pets, not only it is far from being considered a luxury item, but on the contrary, has grown to become a matter of necessity. To cite the primary role that guide dogs play, but not to forget the image, common in our cities, of older people who walk down the street with only the company of their pet. The Andalucian Council of Colleges of Veterinary understands and defends that medical care for animals and therefore humans, is not a luxury but a basic need, which is why they are lobbying the government to not increase the tax 13% but only 2% keeping in line with other sectors in society. Health is a right, not a privilege, to ensure it is a constitutional duty incumbent upon government authorities. There will also be an increase in all taxes relating to feed and accessories.

Latest news on the Rio Manilva pedestrian bridge Plans for the pedestrian bridge over the Rio Manilva connecting the promenades of Sabinillas and Casares Costa would appear to be a little closer to being completed after approval was given by the Coasts Department for the project which will cost some 196,000 euros. The local authorities are seeking funding under the Plan Qualifica tourism infrastructure scheme which will hopefully
stump up 50% of the total cost with the remaining 50% split equally between Casares and Manilva. This project has been ongoing since 2007 with approval having been given but constraints within the Environment Ministry’s budget has meant that the grant has had to be sourced from Andalucian Department of Tourism.

I Carrera de Balsas Duquesa demuestra un gran éxito
I Duquesa Inter Bar Raft Race proves a great success On Sunday August 26 the marina at Puerto de la Duquesa was the stage for the first Duquesa Inter Bar Raft Race. Some seven ‘vessels’ were assembled by the participating bars using a wide variety of materials and designs. Competing in the event were seven teams from Leisure Lounge, Kinsale, Fathoms Bar, Deja Vu, H2O and La Rambla Bar all with a maximum of six crew and no form of propulsion other than paddles.
After one of the rafts failed to survive the launch, the remaining six set off around 11 am on the mad dash to the finishing line. H2O’s lightweight entry proved to be the best design and after trailing at the mid course buoy its superior manoeuvrability saw it take the lead which it retained to the finishing line. The event proved to be a great success and there are already plans for a re-run next year.

Flamenco Hoofers
Flamenco Hoofers
Monday, 24 september, 9 pm Juan de Juan already showed his interest in bringing his art to jazz and black culture with his shows Origins (2008)
and The Black sones (2009). This time he shares the stage with Jason Samuels Smith (New York, 1980), one of the masters of tap, a style of dance born in the U.S. in the nineteenth century as a result of the mixture of traditional English, Scottish, Irish and African dance, which is named after the sound of the metal plates inside the dancers shoes striking the ground. The rhythmic harmony between flamenco and tap makes an encounter inevitable, as if these two dances were made to complement each other.

Understanding this it is a wonder that this group from Granada chose such a name as musically rather than sneaky snipers there totally upfront out and out infantry!
Their self-titled debut album proves this with their mix of Led Zep style guitar playing with the full on garage vibe of MC5. You can tell that these guys have soaked up some good influences and go to show that the seventies garage sound isn’t dead yet.

Local woman runs Amsterdam Marathon for ADANA Sotogrande resident Angelika Weyrich loves animals and usually volunteers to walk ADANA dogs in the Pedregales Park. Originally from Germany, Angelika is an experienced marathon runner and has decided to run the Amsterdam Marathon, which takes place in the Dutch capital in late October, wearing a special pair of Nike shoes with the Adana logo and a shirt with the slogan ‘ADANA ESTEPONA SPAIN’. “This should be good publicity for the town, and will bring funds to ADANA” said Maria Cawsey, President of the association. Angelika, a mother of three children, came to Spain five years ago. She has six dogs, one of them recently rescued from the
association. She follows a grueling training routine every morning, running at least fifty miles a week. As a veteran runner accustomed to participating in prestigious marathons, she has run marathons in New York and Seville with excellent times (less than four hours). Her goal is to complete the race in three hours and a quarter. If successful, she will enter the ‘Elite’ category. ADANA would like to thank Angelika for devoting her time to the many abandoned dogs who are in the care of the charity in the kennels in the Los Pedregales park in Estepona.

Envía tus sugerencias a info@elintercambio.org
The Odd Couple radio show By El Intercambio’s ‘Not Yer NME’ Just over a year ago a couple of like minded music lovers set up an organisation called El Intercambio with the aim of promoting local music and musicians and providing a hub from which to draw together all those involved in local music including venues, record labels, studios, promoters and of course listeners. During this time I’ve often heard comments that Spanish music is all flamenco or Europop and was stuck in the eighties, comments that didn’t sit with the wealth and variety of the talent that we’d come across since we began this project and which was obviously not finding its way onto local radio So in an effort to bust this myth and address this lack of local music on local stations we decided to put together a radio show with
the aim of showcasing some of the bands and artists in the South of Spain that have had us buzzing in that time. The one hour show, the first of which is already available online, draws on a wide range of genres from rock to reggae, blues, country, hip hop and house, in fact there’s not much we don’t like, the only requirement is that its local and predominantly original material. To listen to the show then go to www. elintercambio.org/radio-show where you can stream or download the programme. El Intercambio is a community and as such welcome your input, whether suggestions for the show, gig/band/album reviews, or concert dates, etc. Send your suggestions to info@elintercambio.org

Hotel and restaurant bucking the trend Amidst all the gloomy news of recent months it is good to hear of businesses that are thriving in the present economic climate and one such is a rural hotel near Ronda. Molino del Santo, one of the first rural enterprises in Andalucia, has been operating since 1987 and has always had a good following. However 2012 is proving to be a great year for the British-owned concern with sales in both the hotel and restaurant up by over 15% compared with last year. Owner Andy Chapell is delighted with the way this season is developing and is pleased that this means he can offer secure jobs to over 20 staff. The reasons for the success in 2012 according to Andy are many, although
difficult to quantify. There has been a slowdown in the amount of Spanish trade this year as locals tighten their belts but this has been more than compensated for by Brits, Dutch, Americans and notably Australians. Quality also seems to be the key to creating a loyal following – and over 75% of the visitors both to the hotel and restaurant at Molino del Santo have been before – some of them many, many times over the course of just this season. “I think we have a great combination of a wonderful location, amazingly friendly staff, excellent food and an area which offers many activities for all ages and interests, all with a commitment to quality, ” says the proud proprietor.

Health
The Resident - www.theresident.eu
A Healthier Life with JoJo France and Claudia Norris This month’s article will be in 2 parts. This month will be looking at what makes an Olympic athlete and how to get the most from your body. Next month we’ll awarding medals with personal bests and meal plans. Last month saw the London 2012 Olympics Games take place. Many of us will have compared our bodies to the athletes - admiring their muscles and asking ourselves how do we get muscles like that in our back, legs, arms etc. Of course many of us do not have the time to devote to the training or the genetics to make it to the Olympics, but we are going to share the top 10 professional tips to making the most of your body.
1. Know your body type
Some of us are built for speed, some for endurance and some for power. Some of us have never tried the sport or exercise that we could be great at. Look back at our previous Resident articles (available on-line) - it gives a description of your body composition and what science tells us about your body shape, it also recommends a range of exercises and sports that you may be great at maybe its time to try something new Sam Callan, an exercise physiologist who works with USA Cycling, says that all the training in the world can only change you a little bit, hence the reason why Arnold Schwarzenegger probably couldn’t have been a longdistance runner.
2. Determine your goals
You’re bound to be better at some kinds of physical events than others, so choose one or two that feel natural and that you enjoy. You’ll be much more likely to stick with it, and see success. Do you want to slim down? Focus on nutrition and a routine of steady cardiovascular endurance exercise, with short bursts of speed called interval training. Do you want to build up your cardiovascular endurance? Try swimming, cycling, running distance and boxing, If it’s speed you’re after, try adding sprints to your routine. If you only have a short time to work out, try circuit training, which consists of a series of resistance training exercises performed one after the other, with minimal rest. However, if you have weak area such as core or back consider specific training such as pilates, yoga or TRX.
3. Eat healthily
Three-time Olympic gold winning swimmer Brooke Bennett says that diet should be the first focus for anyone hoping to improve physical well-being. “Nutrition is key in anybody’s life, whether we’re professional athletes or working at a desk”, she says. “It’s about 80% of our lifestyle”. Content, not calories should be the focus for any “Olympic body” plan. Besides the obvious - fruit, vegetables, lean proteins and slow carbohydrates like brown rice and sweet potatoes – and watching the sugar content of the foods you eat. Sugar has a high-calorie count but it’s metabolised quickly, so if you’re not burning the sugars while working out, you’re going to put on weight and increasing your fat stores.
4. Eat frequently
With a mixture of protein and carbohydrates at every meal. Your body needs a steady supply of fuel if it’s going to function at maximum efficiency. Eating frequently also increases your body’s metabolism which means it will burn more calories. Olympic athletes eat five to six meals a day, with protein at each, to increase lean muscle mass and maintain maximum efficiency. So plan to eat smaller meals, ideally two to three hours between each. This keeps your body running efficiently so that everything you’re using is converted to energy and your body doesn’t store anything.
5. Watch the mirror, not the scale
Even if your goal is weight loss, the healthiest of programmes focus on decreasing body fat and increasing lean muscle mass, not a particular number on the scales. It’s similar to age - you could be 45 but feel 30. Age and weight are just numbers that we get obsessed with, but they don’t mean we’re healthy. Instead of weighing, ask
someone to measure you every two weeks and measure your body fat once a month, which will provide an indication of how much fat you’re actually losing.
6. Drink plenty of water
The body is made up of 60% water, which means it needs a regular supply to survive. A fluid loss of even 2% body weight will affect circulatory functions and decrease performance. The amount of water each person needs will vary depending on many factors such as an underlying medical condition, physical activity level, and environment. Most water that we consume comes from drinks, but about 20% comes from food. Too much water can be harmful.
7. Ease into new exercises
If you are going from cyclist to runner or runner to cyclist, you may be pretty fit, but your muscles or skeletal system might not be ready for the new sport. So take it easy at first, and don’t overdo it, but remember, change is fantastic- our bodies very easily plateau and we stop seeing improvements unless we vary our workouts and keep challenging ourselves.
8. Vary your activity, but include weights
Olympic athletes spend a lot of time on their primary activity (a cyclist will ride, a runner will run), but for most of us, varying the activity reduces boredom and uses a variety of muscles which may otherwise not get worked. If your time is limited then look at doing ‘full body weight workouts’ include all the major muscle groups each time you train- back, legs, butt and chest. Strength and power come from resistance training, these are important components of any sport. Working out with weights will also reduce the loss of muscle mass that often occurs with ageing. Even men in their 70s and 80s have put on lean mass with a relatively basic strength-training programme, you don’t have to pump iron everyday to maintain lean muscle mass 3 times a week but training every body part is sufficient, I advise train wiser and not longer.
9. Train regularly and consistently
“The more intense the training is, the more you’re going to reach your potential”, says Sam Callan. “You will not find an Olympic athlete who is not highly, highly trained. They don’t roll out of bed and win the 100-metre sprint or the 50-metre freestyle. They spend hours and hours on training of all sorts”. Not everyone can or wants to commit to hours and hours of training each day, set yourselves a goal 3 x40 minute workouts per week, where you will get hot and sweaty and at least one of them will be some form of resistance training- any time that you spend active is better than time spent lying on the sofa watching TV
10. Consider hiring a personal trainer
In my experience people who get the best out of a PT are the ones who just want to be leaner and healthier exercise is a way of life and for some people they realise that this is easier to do with some one guiding them through what they consider and mine field of exercise jargon. I see my job as working with your body, finding the right programme to achieve the goals that we set together-one where we both see great changes in your shape and your health there is an investment involved, but for most people when after 6 weeks they have dropped a clothes size and begin to feel good in them selves that investment is considered one of the best they have made . Just remember exercise is a way of life, just find an exercise that you enjoy! Remember please consult with your GP before starting any new exercise regime, please contact me if you have any questions about fitness- jojofrance_69@ hotmail.com or 687 030 047 Claudia Norris MA(Hons) Dip(BCNH), Nutritional Therapist, Registered Practitioner with the Nutritional Therapy Council claudia@nutritioninspain.com or 671 142 960

How to obtain your medical card in Andalucia By Limit Consulting
The medical card (tarjeta sanitaria individual) is the document that identifies the individual before the Public Health Authorities of Andalucia. Each person should posses one, including expats that work in Andalucia and are registered in the Social Security and their families. It is important that even children have one from birth. If you don’t have your card yet this is what you need to do to obtain one for you and your family. The first step is including other members of your family under your benefits as user of Social Security. This is done in the offices of Social Security, in the information desk (Centro de Atención e Información de la Seguridad Social CAISS). How to obtain your medical card in Andalucia The necessary documentation is: passport and Residencia of every member of the family and proof of family relationship, such as birth certificate, “libro de familia”, marriage certificate. No translation is needed, though you have to show the originals. On the moment, if everything is correct, you will be given a accreditation document that you will need for the following step at your local health center. ( Essentially this document is enough to receive medical care in all Spain. But having a personal card for each member allows you, for instance,to choose a doctor different from that of other member)
In order to obtain your medical card you have to fill in the application form (one per card) and submit it in your local health center. Along with the form you need to present originals and copies of: Passport and Residencia Certificate of Social Security Contributor. Certificate of Benefitiaries Passport and Residencia of Beneficiaries. The “libro de familia” will do for beneficiaries under 14. Make sure you provide a valid address. The card can take up to a year to arrive. In the mean time you can use the slip they give you.
