Saludos a los lectores, y bienvenidos a la edición de octubre de nuestro periódico The Resident. Aunque personalmente no soy jugador de golf, es obvio de la importancia de este deporte en la economía de nuestra región y con ésto en mente, estoy deseando que el Volvo Match Play Championship, que tendrá lugar a final de este mes, se celebre. Ha sido una gran suerte para el nuevo campo de golf de la Finca Cortesín garantizar la celebración de un torneo tan prestigioso como es éste y da testimonio de la infraestructura de los campos de golf de la Costa del Sol que les ha ganado a los anteriores en el Reino Unido, Wentworth Club. El clima económico actual hace que sea aún más importante, ya que los ojos del mundo estarán puestos en este corto tramo de costa, y todos debemos aprovechar cada oportunidad que se nos presente y que nos de luz.

De hecho, todos deberíamos, en particular el comercio local, asumir algún grado de responsabilidad en la promoción de la región, no sólo para este fin de semana en particular, sino durante todo el año.

Esto quedó claro en la II Costa del Sol Business Awards, celebrada hace unos días en el Hotel El Fuerte de Marbella.

Organizada por el CADE, apoyo por parte de la Junta de Andalucía a los negocios, en la ceremonia asistieron un gran número de empresas extranjeras de la zona y los empresarios.

Después de una serie de presentaciones informativas por la Sra. Olga San Jacinto de Google, España; Claus Rohrer, consejero delegado de la clínica Buchinger de Marbella y Chris Chaplow, Presidente de Andalucia.com y el ganador del año pasado de “Negocios del Año” “, se realizó la presentación de candidaturas y ganadores de premios de este año. Hubo seis categorías y los ganadores fueron: “Joven Empresario”: Terra Sana, “Fomento de Andalucía”: Plush World SL (una historia de éxito CADE), “Mejor Asociación”: Cámara de Comercio Británica, “Integración” : Marbella Design Academy , “Innovación”:Kalida y, finalmente, este año el “Negocio del Año” fue a Creative Web Advertising.

Como podrán ver por los representantes de este año y por la Empresa ganadora del año, hubo un gran énfasis en la importancia de Internet para el futuro de los negocios y el comercio, en realidad, habrá notado que durante dos años consecutivos una empresa en línea ha asegurado los puestos de honor.

Aquí en nuestro periódico The Resident siempre hemos reconocido el valor de Internet, de hecho, es uno de los pocos casos en que un periódico impreso nace de una página web: Manilva Life y en este momento estamos totalmente renovando nuestras páginas, así como estamos explorando otras vías, tales como Facebook, etc, pero os informaremos más el mes próximo.

Bueno, ha sido ciertamente un largo verano, pero finalmente está llegando a su fin, San Pedro celebra su feria de verano este fin de semana, una de las últimas de esta temporada, y el próximo fin de semana veremos el reloj volver hacia atrás, oficialmente marcará el final del verano, aunque por el magnífico clima que hemos podido disfrutar de este último mes... Bueno, después de haberse dicho que el pronóstico predice lluvia para la segunda mitad de la próxima semana , disfrute de ella mientras pueda.

Greetings readers, and welcome to the October issue of The Resident.

Whilst not a golfer personally it is obvious to anybody the importance of this sport to the economy of our region, and it is with this in mind that I am looking forward to the Volvo Match Play Championship which will be taking place at the end of this month. It has been quite a coup for such a new course as Finca Cortesin to secure the hosting of such a prestigious tournament and it is a testament to the golfing infrastructure of the Costa del Sol that it has been wrested away from its former UK home at the Wentworth Club.

The current economic climate makes it even more important, as the eyes of the world will be on this short stretch of coast, and we must all take every opportunity to present ourselves in a good light.

In fact we should all, particularly local commerce, assume some level of responsibility in promoting the region, not just for this particular weekend, but throughout the whole year.

This was made clear at the II Costa del Sol Business Awards held a few days ago at Marbella’s Hotel El Fuerte. Organised by CADE, the Junta de Andalucia’s business support service, the ceremony was attended by a large number of the area’s foreign business and entrepreneurs. After a number of informative presentations by Mrs. Olga San Jacinto from Google, Spain; Claus Rohrer, CEO of Marbella’s Buchinger Clinic; and Chris Chaplow, President of Andalucia.com and last year’s “Business of the Year Award” winner, the nominations and winners of this year’s awards were presented.

There were six categories, and the winners were: “Young Entrepreneur” - Terra Sana; “Promoting Andalucia” - Plush World SL (a CADE success story); “Best Association” - British Chamber of Commerce; “Integration” - Marbella Design Academy; “Innovation” - Kalida; and finally this year’s “Business of the Year” award went to Creative Web Advertising.

As you will see from this year’s speakers and Business of the Year winner, there was a huge emphasis on the importance of the internet for the future of business and commerce, in fact you will have noticed that for two years running an online venture has secured the top honours.

Here at The Resident we have always recognised the value of the internet, in fact we are one of the few cases where a printed newspaper was born out of a website - Manilva Life - and at the moment we are totally revamping our sites, as well as exploring other avenues such as Facebook, etc, but more of that next month.

Well it’s certainly been a long summer, but finally it is drawing to a close, San Pedro celebrates its summer feria this weekend, one of the last of the season, and next weekend sees the clock go back, officially signalling the end of summer, although you would know it given the glorious weather we have been enjoying this last month. Having said that the long term weather forecast predicts rain for the second half of next week so enjoy it whilst you can.

Abierto el plazo para los VIII Premios Blas Infante: Casares Solidario Con la publicación en el Boletín Oficial de la Provincia de las bases de los VIII Premios Blas Infante: Casares Solidario hoy queda abierto el plazo de presentación de proyectos para esta edición a la que Casares destina 91.000 €, el 70% para subvenciones a proyectos de cooperación internacional y el 30% a educación para el desarrollo en Andalucía y España.

El pasado jueves, 8 de octubre, a las 19.00 h se presento oficialmente en la Casa de la Cultura de Casares la nueva edición de estos premios. El acto contará con la presencia de la alcaldesa de Casares, Antonia Morera, y Sebastián GossaĴi, presidente y fundador de la ONG Nakupenda Sana, que hablará del trabajo que realizada la organización en Gambia, y más concretamente del proyecto “LIBERTAD” subvencionado en los pasados Premios Blas Infante.

Para esta edición, el Ayuntamiento de Casares ha adelantado lo plazos de entrega de proyectos al 20 de diciembre, una medida con la que la organización pretende tener más tiempo para la valoración de los proyectos que se presenten.

Del los 91.000 € que el pueblo de Casares

destina a estos premios al menos el 70% se destinarán a subvenciones de cooperación internacional a través del galardón Casares por la Humanidad, pudiendo haber diversos accésits en función de la cuantía de los proyectos.

Al igual que en la pasada edición los premios Casares por España y Casares por Andalucía se destinan a subvencionar únicamente proyectos de educación para el desarrollo en los ámbitos nacional y regional, respectivamente.

La cantidad destinada a estas subvenciones no superarán el 30% de la cuantía total.

Los Premios Blas Infante: Casares Solidario tienen como objeto conceder subvenciones a asociaciones y organizaciones sin ánimos de lucro que realicen acciones para el desarrollo en los ámbitos internacional, nacional y regional.

Con este certamen el Ayuntamiento de Casares atiende su compromiso de destinar el 0,7 % de su presupuesto a ayuda al desarrollo y cooperación internacional, además de aportar a las celebraciones del Día de Andalucía el aspecto de crítica social y solidaridad con los marginados que estaba presente en el pensamiento de Blas Infante.

Vecinos y Amigos de Marina de Casares A pesar de que el Torneo de Golf no fue exactamente un “World Match Play”, los socios disfrutaron de un buen día de golf. El trofeo del ganador y demás premios fueron presentados por el presidente Pepe Guisado durante la cena en el restaurante La Pérgola en el Puerto de la Duquesa.

Así como las clases gratuitas de Español e Inglés, el taller de pintura artística, la Asociación de Vecinos y Amigos de Marina de Casares han añadido una biblioteca gratuita para sus socios. La biblioteca consta de libros de ficción, no ficción, viajes y educativos, los cuales todos han sido

donados.

Este año LosAlcornacoles de Los Barrios fue el destino para el picnic anual y para la caminata. Los participantes disfrutaron de un excelente clima y fueron capaces de caminar a un ritmo constante acompañados de su guía Kiko que les enseñó los bosques de los alrededores y les dio una charla sobre la flora y la fauna, antes de regresar a la zona de picnic para la comida y la bebida digna de un banquete.

Vecinos y Amigos de Marina Casares Whilst the Golf Tournament was not exactly a “World Match Play” members enjoyed some very good golf. The winner’s trophy and other prizes were presented by the president Pepe Guisado at the dinner that evening provided by La Pergola Restaurant in Puerto de la Duquesa.

As well as the free Spanish and English lessons, painting and artistic workshop, the Asociacíon Vecinos y Amigos de Marina de Casares has now added a free library for its Spanish and foreign members. The library consists of fiction, non-fiction, travel and educational books, all of which have

been donated.

This year Los Alcornacoles de Los Barrios was the destination for the annual Picnic and Hike. Participants enjoyed excellent weather and were able to walk at a steady pace accompanied by their guide Kiko who introduced them to the surrounding woodlands and gave a talk on the flora and fauna, before returning to the picnic area for food and drink worthy of a banquet.

Club de Bridge en Casares Costa Casares launches VIII Blas Infante Awards With the publication in the Province’s Official Gazette (BOP) of the entry requirements, Casares launches the eighth edition of its Blas Infante Awards: Casares in Solidarity for which the municipality has allocated 91,000 euros in grants: 70% for international projects and 30% for educational development in Andalucia and Spain.

On Thursday, 8th October there was an official presentation at the Casa de la Cultura, attended by Mayoress Antonia Morera, and Sebastian Gossatti, president and founder of Nakupenda Sana, who talked about this organisation and the “Liberty” programme conducted in Gambia thanks to a previous grant from the Blas Infante Awards.

The deadline for applications is 20th December, giving the organisers more time for assessing submitted projects.

Of the 91,000 euro fund, 70% is allocated

under the ‘Casares for Humanity’ scheme which awards projects of international cooperation, and apart from the main prize, there are several smaller awards depending on the number and quality of submitted projects.

A further 30% is awarded to projects closer to home for educational development projects both regional and national.

The awards, which represents 0.7% of the municipality’s budget, provide grants to associations and non-governmental organisations engaged in development projects at international, national and regional levels.

The Blas Infante Awards were set up in honour of the town’s famous son, and ‘Father of Andalucia’ Blas Infante, and follow in the spirit of his philosophy, and form part of the Andalucia Day celebrations in February.

La gran mayoría de los clubes de bridge en la provincia de Málaga reunirá en la tarde, lo que significa que aficionados de bridge que trabajan, no pueden disfrutar del juego, excepto en fines de

semana. Este club es diferente, ya que se reunirá a las 19:00h los martes.

Además, el club está organizando clases de bridge (hay un pequeño recargo para cubrir los materiales de enseñanza).

Bridge Club in Casares Costa A new Bridge Club has started in Casares Costa to serve the needs of residents in Estepona, Manilva, Sabinillas, and Casares.

The vast majority of bridge clubs in Malaga province meet in the afternoon, which means that bridge fans who work, can not enjoy the game, except at weekends. This club is different as it will meet at 7:00 pm

on Tuesdays.

Moreover the club is organising free bridge lessons (there is a small charge to cover teaching materials).

El Ayuntamiento de Casares pide a la Junta que se reforeste la superficie quemada de Sierra Bermeja La Concejalía de Medio Ambiente del Ayuntamiento de Casares ha enviado un escrito a la Consejería de Medio Ambiente de la Junta de Andalucía en el que se solicita la inclusión de la superficie quemada en el incendio del pasado 9 de septiembre en los próximos planes de inversión y la ejecución de proyecto de restauración forestal.

Según se explica en el escrito, el incendio provocó cuantiosos daños a una superficie aproximada de 600 hectáreas en el Monte El Pinar en Sierra Bermeja. Actualmente permanecen en el monte los pies arbóreos muertos y todo el matorral quemado que podrían servir de foco para nuevos posibles incendios, por lo que la concejalía de Medio Ambiente considera necesaria una reforestación selectiva en los tramos mas afectados.

Esta zona de Sierra Bermeja, gran parte de la cual corresponde a montes de propiedad municipal cuya gestión está concertada con la Consejería de Medio Ambiente, se sitúa en un área conflictiva, por su alto riesgo de incendios. Además, está en contacto con importantes masas forestales de gran valor ecológico como el Monte del Duque y el pinsapar de Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja.

Sierra Bermeja y Real tiene la categoría de Lugar de Interés Comunitario (LIC), un enclave diferencial que permite la evolución y conservación de especies endémicas asociadas a la presencia de peridotitas, material poco frecuente en territorio Andaluz. La zona alberga una masa arbustiva poco común y vegetación arbórea compuesta principalmente por pino negral.

Casares petitions Junta for reforestation in the fire ravaged Sierra Bermeja Casares Town Council’s environment department has petitioned the regional environment ministry for the area burnt during the September 9th fire to be included for investment in the forthcoming forest restoration project.

In a letter the council explained that the fire caused severe damage to some 600 hectares (1,500 acres) in the Monte el Pinar area of the Sierra Bermeja. They point out that the remains of dead trees and shrubs could pose a focus for new fires, therefore clearance and replanting is a priority in the worst affected areas.

This area of the Sierra Bermeja, which is mostly publicly owned and is managed in coordination with the Environment Ministry, is prone to wildfires and also borders on the Monte del Duque and the Pinsapar de Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja, both of which are of high ecological value.

The Sierra Bermeja and Los Reales are classified as Sites of Special Community Interest, due to the geological composition, which includes the rare peridotite, and allows for the conservation of species endemic to this area. The region is home to a wide array of trees and shrubs including the Black Pine and the rare Spanish Fir.

Galerías Paniagua Exposición de bonsais en San Roque El Patio del Palacio de los Gobernadores acoge desde miércoles 14 octubre, hasta el próximo día 29 la VII Muestra de Bonsáis del Campo de Gibraltar- Se trata de una iniciativa de la Asociación de Bonsáis “El Quejigo” que cuenta con el patrocinio de CEPSA. Bonsai Exhibition in San Roque The courtyard of the Palacio de los Gobernadores in San Roque will be the stage for the VII Campo de Gibraltar Bonsai Exhibition, organised by the “El Quejigo” Bonsai Association, and sponsored by CEPSA. Taller de teatro La delegación de Cultura de Manilva, pondrá un año más en marcha el taller de teatro para la temporada 2009/2010.

Los alumnos matriculados abordarán distintos contenidos tales como la iniciación a la interpretación, la vocalización, la animación a la lectura o la dinámica de grupos, entre otros.

El aprendizaje de las diferentes formas de arte que se trabajarán en este taller permitirá consolidar un grupo municipal de teatro amplio y sólido, tal y como pretende la delegación de Cultura al ofertar esta actividad, que además, viene a cubrir las horas de ocio de la población.

Toda persona interesada en participar en este taller de teatro puede realizar la inscripción en la oficina de Cultura, en Manilva; en el edificio de Usos Múltiples en

Sabinillas y en el Monumento del Castillo de la Duquesa.

Las clases serán totalmente gratuitas para todos los alumnos que se matriculen, puesto que estarán subvencionadas en su totalidad por el Consistorio manilveño.

Inicialmente está previsto que las clases den comienzo el próximo 14 de octubre.

En Manilva se impartirán los lunes, de siete y cuarto a nueve y cuarto.

En Sabinillas, los miércoles, en este mismo horario; mientras que los viernes esta casa, Radio Televisión Manilva, pondrá los medios a disposición de los alumnos para la realización de distintas actividades.

Theatre workshop Once again Manilva’s cultural department is offering a theatre workshop for the 2009/2010 season.

Participants will learn different theatrical skills such as acting, speech, reading and the dynamics of groups, among others.

The learning of these skills will build a municipal theatre group which will be able to present various works for the enjoyment of the public.

Manilva Road Cycling Club A local cycling enthusiast is looking to set up an informal road cycling club in Manilva.

The aim is for the club to meet a few times a week early in the morning, when the traffic is not too busy, and will follow a proper fitness programme.

Ideally the club should have at least five regular cyclists, but hopefully many more will join up.

Suspenden hasta 2010 el juicio contra el ex alcalde de Manilva por el caso de ‘La Parrada’ La Audiencia Provincial de Málaga ha suspendido para 2010 el juicio contra el ex alcalde de Manilva Pedro Tirado y otras tres personas por el caso sobre la finca ‘La Parrada’, desglosado del caso ‘Ballena Blanca’, que estaba previsto que comenzara la

próxima semana.

El juicio estaba previsto que se celebrara los días 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 y 15 de este mes de octubre.

Según la providencia de la Sección Octava inicialmente el nuevo señalamiento va del 27 al 29 de abril y del 4 al 6 de mayo del próximo año.

Más polémica en el comedor, esta vez en el Pablo Picasso de Manilva El número de niños que comen en el comedor escolar de la escuela Pablo Picasso en Manilva ha caído en picado desde el inicio del nuevo curso. Los niños regresaron a la escuela a mediados del mes de septiembre encontrándose con los alimentos de catering, teniendo poca semejanza con las comidas que antes habían disfrutado. El nuevo sistema de calentamiento de alimentos pre-cocinados son preparados con un promedio de diez días antes, éste sistema no ha sido bien recibido por los padres de los alumnos de la localidad, los cuales no habían sido advertidos del cambio, antes de la decisión tomada por la Junta de Andalucía.

En un intento por convencer a los padres de los beneficios nutricionales de su menú, dos representantes de la empresa de catering fueron a la escuela para reunirse con los padres.

Los padres, escépticos, pidieron probar la comida y la empresa, deseosa de disipar las dudas de los padres, muy gentilmente por su parte ofrecieron incluso transporte para inspeccionar sus cocinas en Málaga. En consecuencia, y contrariamente a sus intenciones, un grupo de padres decidieron tomar la decisión de retirar a sus hijos del comedor escolar dejando sólo a los niños cuyos padres no tienen otra opción, debido a sus obligaciones laborales.

No es sólo la insuficiente calidad de los alimentos que

ha decepcionado a los padres y niños por igual, también el imprevisto incremento de los precios, hasta cuatro euros cincuenta por niño y día.

Este cambio en la ideología contradice las prioridades tradicionales de la Junta, relativas a la alimentación, incluyendo la educación de las familias para llevar bollos y pasteles hechos en casa para el desayuno en lugar de bollería industrial.

Las familias locales están muy decepcionadas, la cocina de la escuela no solo era más que una instalación esterilizada con comida de calidad media, sino un ambiente acogedor al mismo tiempo educativa, donde el personal animaba a los niños a comer su comida recién cocinada. La campaña de la Junta de recortar en la prestación de la cocina de la escuela ha tenido un impacto en las vidas de los residentes locales.El Calentamiento de alimentos requiere menos personal que cocinar, ésto junto con el hecho de que

los padres hayan retirado a los niños del servicio se ha traducido en pérdidas de empleo. Los abuelos son quienes tienen que cargar con la responsabilidad añadida de preparar el almuerzo, que es, por supuesto, la comida principal del día. Y para aquellos padres que no tienen otra opción sino “aguantar” con el nuevo comedor tienen la preocupación añadida de que sus niños no comen como lo hacían antes.

Al igual que sus homólogos en Secadero, los padres de Manilva se unen para traer de vuelta el antiguo sistema. La campaña de Manilva está en marcha con la recogida de firmas para una petición que se enviará a la ministra de Educación, Mar Moreno y también se está en conversaciones con el programa de TVE España Directo para que se emita en la televisión nacional.

Pablo Picasso pupils also boycott school dinners The number of children eating in the school canteen at Pablo Picasso school in Manilva has plummeted since the start of term. Children returned to school mid-September to be presented with canteen food bearing little resemblance to the meals that they had previously enjoyed.

The new system of heating up pre-cooked food prepared on average ten days before has not been well received by concerned local parents, who had not been warned about the change, prior to the decision made by the Junta de Andalucia.

In a bid to convince parents of the nutritional benefits of their menu, two representatives of the catering company came to school to meet with parents. Sceptical parents requested to taste the food and the company eager to dispel doubts obliged and even offered transport to inspect their kitchens in Malaga. Consequently and contrary to their intentions, a flux of parents decided to make the decision to withdraw their children from “comedor” leaving behind just those children whose

parents have no other choice, due to work obligations, but to leave their children in the service.

It isn´t just the inadequate quality of the food that has disappointed both parents and children alike but the unforseen price increase to as much as four euros fifty per child per day. This shift in ideology contradicts the Junta’s traditional priorities concerning nutrition including educating families to bring in home made rolls and cakes for breakfasts rather than factory produced products.

Local families are bitterly disappointed as the school kitchen was more than just a sterile facility with mediocre food but a homely whilst educational enviroment where the familar staff encouraged the children to eat their freshly cooked food.

The Junta´s blatant attempt to cut back on the school kitchen provision has had an impact on the lives of local residents.

Heating food requires less staff than cooking from scratch, this coupled with parents withdrawing children from the service has resulted in job losses. Local

grandparents are extra burdened with the added responsibility of providing the lunch time meal, which is of course, the main meal of the day. And for those parents that have no other choice but “make do” with the new comedor there is the added worry that their children aren´t eating like they did before.

Just like their Secadero counterparts, Manilva parents are uniting to bring back the old system. The Manilva campaign is underway as they are collecting signatures for a petition to be sent to education minister Mar Moreno and are also in talks with TVE programme España Directo for national TV coverage.

Partido Andalucista Manilva Que piensas de la política en Manilva ¿Los políticos son para el pueblo o para sus intereses personales?

Un Cordial Saludo a todas las personas que leen este periódico “The Resident “.

Primeramente contestarte, a tu primera pregunta, NUNCA, JAMÁS UN POLÍTICO DEBE USAR ESTE FIN EN BENEFICIO PROPIO, aunque desgraciadamente esto ocurre en muchos lugares del mundo. La Política constructiva, es muy positiva, para nuestro sistema de organización Mundial, pero desgraciadamente la Corrupción existente en ciertas ocasiones, ciega a nuestros políticos, señores, que deben mentir interminablemente, para tapar y ocultar sus irregularidades. Sus propios miedos cegadores, por ser descubiertos, o su propia usura y avaricia, no les dejan pensar en su prójimo, sólo en su propio bolsillo. Dejan pueblos, ciudades y naciones saqueadas y en la pobreza monetaria, eso sí, estos señores o señoras van con sus buenos relojes de oro, regalados por promotores posiblemente corruptos, lujosos coches, magníficos chalets, gracias al dinero del estafado ciudadano del Municipio. Estos Gestores, no tienen problema, porque una vez llegadas las elecciones, intentan comprar la voluntad de los habitantes del Municipio con regalitos insignificantes, que claro está, es una pequeña inversión monetaria, a cambio de volver sentarse en el sillón de cada Alcaldía.

Sobre la política en Manilva, volveré a repetir una frase que ya dije en una emisora de radio “Radio Bahía Libre”, del Sr. Samuel Fernández, crítico Político. En este pueblo posiblemente existe “ Malversación de

Fondos, Tráfico de Influencias, Prevaricación, Falsificación Documental, Cohecho, Abuso de poder, de esto último yo he sido testigo, al igual que Engaños en los contratos de trabajo, esto es lo que se rumorea tanto en el Municipio, como fuera de él. Es una vergüenza, que nuestros políticos estén llevando a Manilva a lo más bajo en prensa, y piensan, que poniendo 2 arbolitos y una fuentecita, se soluciona el turismo, por ejemplo. A las personas les gusta venir y visitar Municipios ricos y prósperos, decir con orgullo, ¡yo he veraneado en las bonitas y limpias playas de Manilva!, pero NO, salimos en prensa, “Corrupción Ballena Blanca “, “Políticos Imputados en operaciones irregulares“, “Investigaciones abiertas en Manilva “Esto es una vergüenza. Tenemos que decir “Basta Ya”, Queremos una Manilva Saneada Política, Económica y Socialmente. En las próximas Elecciones Municipales, deberían entrar políticos nuevos, en los primeros puestos de cada Candidatura Política. Políticos que tengamos las Manos Limpias de toda posible Corrupción. ¿Que piensas del pacto entre IU – PSOE? A mi parecer me resulta un pacto abstracto y sin sentido en la gobernabilidad política del Municipio, sí debo admitir, que sería un pacto viable entre partidos de izquierdas, pero sinceramente, no encuentro buena armonía entre ambos. Para que un Municipio vaya bien, primeramente entre los candidatos debe de haber cierta empatía mutua. En nuestro Municipio no veo ni coordinación, lealtad y sinceridad entre nuestros gobernantes, tanto en la oposición como dentro del equipo de gobierno. Rupturas, insultos y

desprecios entre ellos. La prensa a nivel Provincial y a veces Nacional, hablan de Manilva, como una localidad con muchos problemas internos. Les daría un voto de confianza, primeramente si ciertos coordinadores o secretarios generales, dejarán ya su puesto a personas más jóvenes y preparadas, como segundo requisito, que acallarán finalmente los rumores, de la existencia de cláusulas ocultas en el documento firmado entre IU – PSOE, y finalmente, que haya Paz, Tranquilidad política y riqueza en Manilva, de una vez por todas. ¿Creéis que los votos de los extranjeros/forasteros son importantes?

Nosotros no hablamos de votos, nosotros hemos nacido, es la primera vez que lo voy a comentar, como parte de un Destino, nos han puesto aquí fácilmente, nos han unido, es decir, nos están facilitando las herramientas necesarias para intentar poner orden en este desenfreno político. Quizás las plegarias del Municipio Manilveño han hecho efecto, jajaja.

Ahora enserio, primeramente somos todos personas, da igual la nacionalidad, no vamos buscando los votos, eso vendrá por sí sólo, si las personas nos ven aptas para gestionar Manilva, seremos nosotros, todo vendrá por sí sólo, ahora estamos cosechando, las mejores semillas que tenemos, después la recogeremos con mucho agrado y trabajo.

Quisiera mandarles un mensaje a los señores extranjeros: “No estáis solos, si vivís en el Puerto de la Duquesa, el P.A. Manilva está sensibilizado con este sector, yo he vivido muchos años en esa zona, y me duele ver como un Puerto Deportivo tan bonito, está tan dejado y sin vida. Mi

familia posee una propiedad en aquella zona, y como residentes allí, luchamos por una mejora en el Puerto y en el Hacho. Confiad en nosotros y si nos necesitáis, podéis poneros en contacto con nosotros en el correo electrónico, PartidoAndalucistaManilva@yahoo.es”. Muchos Saludos Cordiales. ¿Porque hay tantos jóvenes en el P.A? Porque somos una agrupación joven. Aunque nosotros no vemos a las personas por la edad, sino por el espíritu juvenil y su fuerza interior, ya que estas facultades, son las necesarias para poseer unas inmensas ganas de trabajar por un bien común. Somos muchísimos simpatizantes, pero desgraciadamente sólo salen a la luz pública una pequeña parte de ellos, ya que el resto temen ser represaliados, a veces pienso, en la posible dictadura que se encuentra Manilva, las personas me dicen “ Lidia yo estoy con el P.A. Manilva, pero si me descubro, seguro que acaban echando a mi marido, o a mi hija-o a la calle, y tú sabes que trabajan en el Ayuntamiento de Manilva “, que pena me da esta situación bochornosa, miedo en las familias a ser despedidos.

Regarding Manilva’s politics, I will repeat what I said during a broadcast on “Radio Bahía Libre”, during a show hosted by the political critic Sr. Samuel Fernández I stated that in our town there is the possiblity for “Embezzlement of funds, trafficking of influence, obstruction, falsification of documents, bribery, and abuse of authority”, this last of which I have personally witnessed, as well irregularities in work contracts, all of which are rumoured within the town as well as outside.

It is a shame that our politicians have brought the reputation of Manilva to such a low point in the eyes of the press, and that they think that planting a couple of trees and installing a little fountain will solve all our problems. Tourists like to visit rich and prosperous resorts, and like to boast that they have spent the summer on the pretty and clean beaches of Manilva! But no, all we read in the press are reports of huge corruption cases, such as the “Ballena Blanca”, and “Politicians Accused of Fraud”, “Investigations Begun in Manilva”.

We must say “Stop Now” we want a healthy system in Manilva, politically, socially and economically. In the next local elections we must see new politicians at the head of each political list, politicians whose hands are clean

of any possible hint of corruption.

What do you think of the pact between IU and PSOE? To me it seems a pact in name only and makes little sense in the political governance of the municipality, yes I must admit it should be a viable pact, being between two parties of the left, but seriously, I have never seen any harmony between these two groups.

For the municipality to thrive there must be a mutual empathy between the councillors. But in our municipality I do not see this, nor do I see any coordination, loyality or sincerity amongst the governing body, the same goes for the opposition. Rifts, insults and scorn are the order of the day, with the press at provincial and sometimes even at national level speaking of Manilva as a place with many internal problems. It would certainly give a vote of confidence if firstly, certain officials and even general secretaries would hand over to younger, better prepared people, and secondly silence the rumours of hidden clauses in the document signed between the IU - PSOE, finally bringing peace, political tranquility, and prosperity to Manilva once and for all.

Do you believe the votes of foreigners/people born outside of Manilva are important?

At this moment we are not looking for their votes, more for their support,

because after all the incumbent politicians are making it easy for us to make a good impression, and maybe the people will see us as an answer to their prayers! But seriously we are all people regardless of nationality, and as I said at the moment we are not seeking votes, that will come by itself.

If people judge us fit to manage the municipality, then we will make every effort to do just that. Everything will come with time, at the moment we are sowing the best seeds that we have in the knowledge that later we can gather a good harvest.

At this point I’d like to send a message to the foreign community: “You are not alone”, those of you who live in Duquesa Port. The PA Manilva is aware of the problems in this area. I myself have lived for many years in that area, and it hurts me to see such a pretty marina, so tatty and lifeless.

We are a young group, although we do not see people by their age, more by their youthful attitude and spirit, since these attributes are what gives us the immense desire to work for

What do you think of Manilva’s political situation? Do you think that the politicians working for the people or for their own personal interests?

In answer to this question, a politician must NEVER use their position for their own benefit, although unfortunately this is often the case throughout the world. Constructive politics is a positive force across the globe, but unfortunately corruption snares politicians, who must then lie to hide their irregularities. Their greed and fear of discovery blinds them to the needs of their constituents, and their only thoughts are of lining their own pockets. They leave towns, cities, even whole nations looted and in financial poverty, whilst still receiving their expensive gifts from corrupt promoters, along with luxury cars and villas bought with money swindled from public coffers. When the time comes for elections, these politicians have no worries as they seek to buy the votes of the local electorate with insignificant gifts that are a small

Tú nunca le has pegado, pero ya lo han hecho otros, y el perrito está a la defensiva. Pues algo similar les ocurre a nuestras personas, les han engañado tanto, que ya no creen en nada ni en nadie, y yo les invito, a que abran a los ojos de la esperanza, y que vean al nuevo renacer en Manilva.

Tened Fé y el milagro llegará ante vosotros. Desgraciadamente para salir de esta crisis interna, existen varios factores que hay que asumir: Entre ellos la crisis mundial, arcas públicas Municipales vacías, las personas como he dicho anteriormente, ya no creen en los políticos, así que el deber del nuevo Equipo de Gobierno, el cual, entrará a gobernar en las próximas elecciones Municipales en el Consistorio, es volver a restaurar el pensamiento de unión entre nuestros ciudadanos del Municipio.

the good of the community. We have many supporters, but unfortunately only a small number publicly declare their affiliation since many of them fear reprisals. In fact it is possible to compare Manilva to a dictatorship, since many people say to me “Lidia, I am with the PA Manilva but if I am discovered they may throw my husband or my daughter out of her job, as you know they work for Manilva Town Hall”. This is a disgraceful situation where people live in fear of being sacked from the jobs for their political affiliations.

A good politician looks to do their best for their town, for the wisdom to govern honestly and to respect each of its citizens regardless. It can be seen that everyone feels deceived and swindled and that all politicians should be tarred with the same brush.

I would ask that we be judged with fresh eyes as a new force in Manilva, after all if you have faith then maybe a miracle can occur!

Unfortunately to recover from this current crisis a number of factors need to be addressed such as the world-wide economic crisis, empty municipal coffers, and a loss of faith in our politicians. The duty of any new government following the next elections is to reconnect with the electorate and restore the union between the people and the government.

El Partido Andalucista Manilva Con fecha 2 de octubre, el P.A. Manilva celebró una asamblea extraordinaria, para recibir nuevamente a sus Simpatizantes, Afiliados y Amigos, después de un merecido descanso veraniego.

Aunque hemos tenido vacaciones, el P.A. Manilva no ha parado del todo, y ha seguido trabajando para hacer el bienestar de muchas personas más llevadero.

Tenemos que decirle a todo Nuestro Pueblo de Manilva que estamos con ellos, sean de la Nacionalidad que sean, y a todas aquellas personas que nos piden ayuda, procuramos atenderles en la medida de nuestras capacidades.

Partido Andalucista of Manilva On the 2nd October, the PA Manilva celebrated and extraordinary general meeting, to gather together supporters, affiliates and friends after the summer break.

Despite the holidays the PA Manilva still continued to work for the benefit of the local populace. We would like to say to the people of Manilva that we will always endeavour to assist, to the best of our abilities, all those who request our help regardless of nationality or political persuasion.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those working within the

Andalucian Group, and hope they continue the good work.

We are a modern, progressive party with many aspirations here in Manilva, but also as part of the Andalucian Party.

Clase de bailes latinos La Delegación de Cultura de Manilva, ha puesto en marcha para el próximo curso 2009/2010 las clases de bailes latinos, impartidas por el profesor Franklyn Vargas.

Estas darán comienzo el 16 de octubre, y en ellas, los alumnos matriculados aprenderán diferentes bailes latinos, tales como salsa, merengue, y cumbia, entre otros. Con esta iniciativa, se pretende que los participantes llenen sus horas de ocio, divirtiéndose, haciendo ejercicio y al mismo tiempo conociendo diferentes pasos de baile.

Se ofrecerán en las instalaciones de la Casa del Mar, en Sabinillas, y hay dos niveles diferentes: iniciación y avanzado.

El curso de iniciación se desarrollará los viernes, de cinco a seis y media de la tarde; y el avanzado, también los viernes, de seis y media de la tarde a ocho de la noche.

Los interesados en obtener más información han de dirigirse a las dependencias de la Delegación de Cultura, situadas en la calle Mar, número uno, en Manilva.

Esta actividad cuesta 30 euros el trimestre, como las demás actividades organizadas por este departamento.

Las inscripciones se pueden realizar en la Delegación de Cultura, en Manilva; o bien en el edificio de usos múltiples de Sabinillas o bien el monumento del Castillo de la Duquesa.

David Bisbal en concierto Los seguidores de David Bisbal están de enhorabuena.

Porque el cantante almeriense actuará en el auditorio municipal de Málaga el sábado 12 de diciembre, y la Delegación de Fiestas, ha organizado ese día una excursión a la capital para que los vecinos que lo deseen puedan asistir a este concierto.

Con respecto al espectáculo del artista del próximo 12 de diciembre, hay que decir que el recinto situado en la capital malagueña dispone de un aforo limitado para 1.500 personas.

Latin dance classes Manilva’s culture department is offering latin dance classes, presented by Franklyn Vargas.

The classes will begin on 16th October and students will learn various latin dance styles, such as salsa, merengue, and cumbia among others.

Besides learning to dance, these classes are a great way to socialise, whilst keeping fit as well.

The classes will be held in the Casa del Mar (the old health centre in Sabinillas) and

there are two levels available: beginners and advanced.

Beginners’ classes take place on Fridays between 5 pm and 6.30 pm, with the advanced classes also on Fridays from 6.30 pm to 8 pm.

Classes cost 30 euros per term and participants may enrol at the Delegación de Cultura, in Calle Mar, Manilva; the edificio usos múltiples in Sabinillas or the Castle in Castillo de la Duquesa.

Programa de senderismo 2009-2010 Ayuntamiento de Manilva, ha comunicado que se pone en marcha un año más, el programa de senderos correspondiente a la temporada de invierno.

De esta manera el 25 de octubre se realizará el sendero Manilva-El Secadero de dificultad media y con una distancia a recorrer de 14 kilómetros.

El 22 de noviembre se llevará a cabo el sendero Manilva-San Enrique y el 17 de enero, Sabinillas-Canuto de los molinos.

Los participantes deberán ser mayores de 14 años o tendrán que ir acompañados por un familiar.

La condición física deberá ser la apropiada a las distancias y dificultades de los recorridos a realizar pudiendo denegarse el acceso a las mismas por consideraciones técnicas de la propia organización.

El precio por ruta es de tres euros. Los

pagos se realizarán a través de la cuenta de Unicaja nº. 2103 0153 23 0230000044, de la Delegación de Medioambiente y posteriormente serán comunicados a la concejalía.

El plazo de reservas o solicitudes permanecerá abierto hasta el miércoles previo a la realización de cada ruta. No se admitirán los pagos no comunicados a la Delegación de Medio Ambiente.

Se admitirá un máximo de cincuenta plazas por grupo y ruta.

Las salidas se llevarán a cabo a las 9 de la mañana. La delegación dispondrá autobuses para las rutas que lo requieran.

Manilva autumn programme of walks The autumn programme of hikes, organised

by Manilva’s environment department, begins this coming Sunday, 25th October with a walk from Manilva to El Secadero, a hike of 14 kms and medium difficulty. This will be followed on the 22nd November with the Manilva-San Enrique route; and on the 17th January by the Sabinillas-Canuto de los molinos route.

Participants must be over 14 years of age or accompanied by a family member, and be in sufficient physical condition for the distance and level of difficulty.

The price for each route is 3 euros per person and should be paid into the Enviroment Department’s Unicaja account 2103 0153 23 0230000044.

You can book your place from the Wednesday prior to each walk, and there are a maximum of 50 places for each route.

Departures are from 9 in the morning and transport is available where required.

La “Festividad de San Isidro Labrador” de Estepona es declarada de Interés Turístico de Andalucía El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, a través de la delegación municipal de Turismo, informa que la festividad de San Isidro Labrador ha sido declarada de Interés Turístico de Andalucía.

La Orden de 9 de septiembre, de la Consejería de Turismo, Comercio y Deporte, se publica hoy en el BOJA. Esta declaración está al amparo de la Ley 12/1999, de 15 de diciembre, por la que podrán ser declaradas de interés turístico aquellas fiestas, acontecimiento, rutas y publicaciones que supongan una manifestación y desarrollo de los valores propios y de tradición popular. Otro antecedente es el Decreto 251/2005, de 22 de noviembre, por el que se regulan estas declaraciones a aquellas fiestas, acontecimientos, itinerarios, rutas, publicaciones y obras audiovisuales que contribuyan de forma destacada al desarrollo de los valores propios y de tradición popular de Andalucía, favoreciendo el mejor

conocimiento de los recursos turísticos de Andalucía, y el fomento, desarrollo y difusión del turismo; y en virtud de la Orden 13 de julio de 2007 Según la Consejería de Turismo, la Festividad de San Isidro Labrador ha quedado suficientemente documentado y garantizado que contribuye de manera destacada al desarrollo de los valores propios y de tradición popular de Andalucía, favoreciendo el mejor conocimiento de los recursos turísticos de Andalucía y el fomento, desarrollo y difusión del turismo, cumpliendo con todos los requisitos exigidos de repercusión turística, antigüedad, arraigo, valor cultural y equipamientos adecuados y necesarios establecidos en el Decreto 251/2005, de 22 de noviembre, por el que se regulan las Declaraciones de Interés Turístico de Andalucía.

El concejal delegado de Turismo, Carlos Rodríguez, ha valorado muy positivamente

esta designación por parte de la Consejería, dado que la celebración de San Isidro Labrador, Patrón y Alcalde Mayor de Estepona, se trata de una fiesta singular de larga andadura, los primeros actos datan de 1940, y continuidad en el tiempo, con un programa de actividades muy variado que aglutina tres facetas: religiosidad popular, tradiciones culturales y eventos de promoción agroindustrial.

En su vertiente religiosa y cultural, estas fiestas son organizadas por la Hermandad de San Isidro Labrador (cultos y actos religiosos, romería en el Parque Municipal “San Isidro Labrador” el primer fin de semana de mayo...), siendo de exclusiva competencia municipal los actos de promoción agroindustrial que se celebran en torno al 15 de mayo en la Villa (Feria Agrícola y Ganadera, concursos, tradiciones...).

El Estepona organiza una excursión a Lepe La Unión Estepona Club de Fútbol ha organizado una excursión para el próximo desplazamiento a la localidad onubense de Lepe, donde el Estepona disputará la jornada décima ante el San Roque de Lepe. La expedición se hospedará en el hotel Confortel Islantilla (Cuatro Estrellas), de Isla Cristina (Huelva), con régimen de Todo Incluido.

La salida sería el sábado 24 de octubre, a las ocho de la mañana, con almuerzo y cena en el hotel, además de desayuno y almuerzo

del domingo. El precio por persona es de 95 euros, incluyendo autobús, hotel con todo incluido y entrada al campo de fútbol de Lepe.

Cultural trip to Seville

Estepona’s San Isidro Festival declared an event of special Tourist Interest The Junta de Andalucia’s Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Sport has declared Estepona’s annual San Isidro festival an event of “Interés Turístico de Andalucía”.

This status is granted to events, festivals, publications, etc., that represent and promote Andalucia’s culture and traditions to tourists.

According to the Ministry, the San Isidro Festival has met all the criteria required to receive this accolade, as it is a unique celebration dating back to 1940 and celebrating one of Estepona’s Patron saints, San Isidro Labrador, with a programme of religious, cultural and agricultural activities.

The Brotherhood of San Isidro organise a procession and pilgrimage (romeria) at the town’s San Isidro park during the first weekend of May, which is followed by an Agricultural and Livestock Fair around the Saint’s Day, 15th May.

Estepona’s youth department is organising a cultural trip to Seville for the 7th and 8th November. The full and interesting programme takes in guided tours to some of the city’s most important sites.

The price is 114 euros per person, (90 euros for children between

the age of 2 and 12) and includes full board accommodation and return travel.

Una nueva embarcación para el servicio de vigilancia de playas El Ayuntamiento de Estepona han presentado esta mes la embarcación con la que se llevará a cabo la próxima campaña de vigilancia del litoral esteponero y que durante el resto del año será utilizada y mantenida por el Parque municipal de Bomberos.

Esta embarcación se ha obtenido con una subvención que destinó la Dirección General de Promoción y Comercialización Turística de la Junta de Andalucía.

El importe total de la embarcación asciende a 30,869 €, de los cuales, la subvención ha cubierto el 60%

(18,521€), siendo el importe restante aportado por el Ayuntamiento(12,347€).

Con esta aportación material se pretende que tanto los usuarios habituales como los visitantes que año tras años visitan las playas dispongan de una mayor seguridad en las aguas del litoral esteponero.

Non alcoholic cocktail contest Estepona’s youth department is inviting entries for the I NonAlcoholic Cocktail Contest which will coincide with the ‘Day Against Alcohol Abuse’ celebrated on the 15th November.

New boat for Estepona’s beach patrol The local authorities in Estepona have unveiled earlier this month a new boat which will be available for use by the beach patrol for next year’s summer season.

During the rest of the year the boat will be used and maintained

by the town’s fire service.

The boat was obtained thanks to a grant from the regional government’s Tourism and Promotion Directorate which funded 60% (18,521€) of the total cost of 30,869€ leaving the

remaining 40% (12,347€) to be raised from council funds.

This will provide visitors to the municipality’s beaches greater security in the waters off the Estepona coastline.

The event was held in support of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (UK), with two of its representatives flying out, at their own expense, to attend and support the event. Even though the heavens opened, the 20 teams put up a brave fight and all 20 teams finished the course, albeit somewhat damp! Despite the weather the day was a huge success, due to the generosity of all sponsors, prize givers and donors, with a very impressive 6,464,50 Euros being raised for the Charity. The format for the

On Remembrance Sunday, which is November 8th this year, the Estepona Branch of The Royal British Legion will be attending and marching at the Remembrance Day Service in Gibraltar (1145 for 12 noon at The Cross of Remembrance), as usual. Queens Gallantry Award for hero soldier

Staff Sergeant James McCormick and his wife Vivienne at Buckingham Palaceto receive his QGM.

A British couple living in Manilva are proudly celebrating their sonin-law’s gallantry award received whilst on active service in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province.

Staff Sergeant James McCormick, of the Royal Engineers was on an operation to deliver a turbine to the hydro-electric power station at Kajaki Dam, based in the Helmand Province in Southern Afganistan, when one of the heavy equipment transporters broke down. When the driver went to investigate, the trailer collapsed, crushing him face down under one of the wheel arches, quick thinking SSgt McCormick immediately went to his assistance, A Royal Engineers spokesman said “ his humbling bravery showed complete disregard for his own life, his quick actions displayed raw courage,

selflessness and initiative, saving the life of an unknown colleague” It took “Mac”15 minutes scraping through dust, dirt, the drivers blood and hydraulic fluid to reach him. The vehicle which was resting at a dangerous angle could have collapsed at any time.

By the time he reached the driver he was exhausted but managed to grab him firmly and pulled him out as other collegues pulled SSgnt McCormick out by his feet.

SSgnt McCormick said on receiving the award “I am humbled and most surprised to be picked out from amongst all the other brave men who were there” SSgnt McCormicks in laws David and Eileen Watt live locally in Hacienda Guadalupe, Manilva, Eileen is a volunteer in Los Ninos charity shop in Sabinillas.

Euro v pound currency update Following a period of relative stability over the last six month whereby the trading range for GBP/€ was approximately 1.13 – 1.18 we have seen the pound succumb to negative sentiment with support at 1.13 giving way and then even stronger support at 1.1000 failing to contain the declines.

The fact that two members of the MPC were clearly in favour of increasing the quantitative easing measures by an additional £25 billion in August, to take it to a total of £200 billion threw further weight behind those concerned as to whether it was actually having the desired effect of improving access to credit across the real economy and at the same time how the Bank of England will implement their exit strategy once signs of economic improvement materialise.

Although the September meeting of the MPC highlighted the fact that for the moment at least no further funding was to be made available it does remain a possibility in the background.

There have also been rumblings from the Bank of England that they may reduce the interest rate paid on deposits held as reserves by the UK’s Banks. The intention is to encourage the banks to kick start lending again rather than to hoard the vast sums they have received since the banking bail outs/quantitative easing measures were introduced.

Although both the UK and

the Eurozone have seen vast improvements in their economic activity, Germany and France actually posted gains in GDP for the 2nd quarter of 0.3% respectively; the UK is still officially in recession with the most recent GDP revision showing a GDP decline for the same period of 0.7%.

The interest rate differential also still favours the € with the expectation that interest rates will remain at their current historically low levels well into 2010. Inflation in the Eurozone is nonexistent whilst although we are seeing declines in the UK it does remain rather sticky with CPI (Consumer Price Index) last showing a reading of 1.6%. Although the weak pound has provided a most welcome boost to our nation’s exporters it is extremely bad news for our importers. This additional cost has put upward pressure on the price of many imported goods, with electrical and electronic goods badly affected.

With the growing concerns that the UK’s PSNBR (Public Sector Net Borrowing Requirement) will actually exceed the dreadful number of £175 billion anticipated by year end, traders needed very

little encouragement to sell the pound with a few high profile banks revisiting their previous calls that GBP/€ parity is a possibility once again.

The global stock markets have had a truly wonderful time over the last six month with the FTSE 100 up 43% since the collapse last year. Should global equity markets continue to give back some of these gains we may yet again see a flight to safety with the US$ being the preferred currency of choice. This would further weight on the pound as investors have very little confidence in it at present.

It is now vital for the health of the pound to see clear signs of recovery that at least match those of the Eurozone and I would hope for a confirmation of a return to growth show in the 3rd quarter GDP numbers to be made available in October.

The 1.05 level is now extremely important for the pound; hopefully we will not decline that far, and more importantly the UK continues to build sustainable growth with the help of the current weakness of sterling.

La sucesión en la empresa familiar Es sin duda la figura dominante en la estructura económica de la mayoría de los países desarrollados.

Los estudios señalan que suponen entre el 70 y el 90% de las mercantiles de un país y esta información refleja la importancia de las mismas dentro la economía nacional, autonómica y local.

Centrándonos en las economías locales, y particularizando aun más en el término de Manilva, nos encontramos con un claro ejemplo de este tipo tan particular de gestionar lo que cada uno llega a considerar su empresa familiar. En este caso hablamos de la denominada casa grande, casa de todos de Manilva, o simplemente ayuntamiento.

Esta institución está regida hoy día como una supuesta empresa familiar, con unas directrices muy bien definidas por especialistas.

Un deseo ferviente de que los gestores y sucesores elegidos mantengan en sus manos la gestión de la misma. Ofrecimiento una oportunidad a sus familiares y allegados, intentando proporcionar el control de su futuro, consolidando lo que

para ellos es ya una tradición, pero sobre todo, creando ventajas y riquezas que garanticen una estabilidad económica a todos sus miembros.

No hay una tipología única de empresa familiar, existen de primera generación, segunda o de mayor antigüedad. Así como el grado de extensión de sus miembros. Aquí en la casa grande de Manilva, es numerosa, cuanto menos, en familiares de segundo y tercer grado . Alguno de ellos, aunque viva lejos, es muy rozado, notorio e importante para el conjunto de toda la familia, como el ya conocido por todos, “Señor de los Ladrillos” (Personaje comentado en nuestro anterior artículo.)

Particularmente en el caso del “Señor de los Ladrillos”, esta relación se forja especialmente compleja, ya que se provoca un solapamiento de roles: donde por ejemplo puede ser simultáneamente, “EL PRIMO LEJANO FAVORITO” y a la vez desempeñar el cargo de “CONSEJERO MANIPULADOR / SALVADOR”. Pero cuidado,

esta situación, hace que choquen los intereses, y se produzcan las fricciones y problemas lógicos derivado de las “EXPECTATIVAS” e “INTERPRETACIÓNES DE LA REALIDAD” de cada miembro. Conflictos producidos entre los que “MANDAN” por ahora, y los que “SON MANDADOS”, el que “EXIGE” y el que es “EXIGIDO”. Acentuado en este caso específico del “Señor de los Ladrillos” por su personalidad manipuladora y maquiavélica como ya habíamos comentado en el anterior articulo.

Desgraciadamente, las estadísticas muestran que, a pesar de las ventajas de este tipo de organizaciones, se enfrentan a mayores dificultades que las no familiares. Señalando indefectiblemente una expectativa de vida mucho menor derivada del paso crítico que ha de superar y que no todas lo hacen en el momento que se plantea una sucesión.

Situación en la que se encuentra hoy día nuestra supuesta empresa familiar.

Esto crea una incertidumbre generalizada a todos sus

miembros y en particular para aquellos que tienen mucho en juego, como es el caso, hay que dolor, del “Señor de los Ladrillos” acompañado como siempre por su sequito de palmeros. Que va a pasar, quien va a suceder a quien, que roles van cambiar y cuando. Esto produce un gran estrés a la familia y allegados.

Evidentemente, para muchos de los miembros su posición en la jerarquía cambiará. Sus privilegios se verán reducidos, si no desaparecidos. Cuidado de “PRIMO LEJANO FAVORITO” uno puede pasar a “PRIMO REPUDIAR”, teniendo que dejar su participación en la empresa, y poniendo en peligro sus intereses. Muchas preguntas y pocas respuestas claras de momento. Pero no hay que desesperar, la respuesta está cerca, y desgraciadamente digamos que en este caso particular, para calmar la situación que se vive, habrá que adoptar, de china o latino américa. Algunos de los miembros pensarán, hay que joderse, más familiares, más intereses, más opiniones, más caracteres… con lo difícil que se hace la convivencia entre unos pocos, y ahora parece

que va a parir la abuela.

En fin, no nos pongamos nerviosos que en esta empresa particularmente, como dice IKEA, “DONDE CABEN DOS, CABEN TRES”. ¿No es así, compañeros?

This institution appears to run these days on the line of a family business with specialist directives put in place to create a well-oiled piece of commercial machinery.

There exists a fervent desire for the management and their elected successors to maintain in their hands control of the business, offering opportunities for relatives and close friends to retain

control of the business, using the justification that this is the traditional way, but what is really a method of creating advantages, wealth and the guarantee of economic stability to all their members.

There is no one typical model for the family business, it can comprise of one, two or more generations, as well as varying in the degree of inclusion for the extended family. Here in the great House of Manilva, there are many relatives in employment, some of them, although distantly related have equal importance, including those such as the “Lord of the Bricks” who featured in last month’s article. Unfortunately statistics show that in spite of the advantages of this type of organisation, they may also face certain disadvantages particularly when there is a change in government which

can lead to poor job security!

The situation in which the House of Manilva finds itself is creating much uncertainty among the family members and a good deal of pain to the “Lord of the Bricks” accompanied by much wringing of hands.

What is going to happen and to who? What will be the changes and when? This uncertainty puts a great deal of stress on family and close friends, as it is evident that for many members their position in the hierarchy will change. Their privileges will be reduced or disappear altogether. So watch out “Favourite Distant Cousin” you could become the “Disowned Cousin” and have to leave the company, putting in danger your many interests.

Mechanical or human wine harvesting?

We are in the middle of the wine harvest season (Vintage), which is one of the most crucial steps in the process of winemaking.

Open since the beginning of this summer The Courtyard Restaurant in Monte Duquesa aims to provide Mediterranean cuisine in a unique relaxing atmosphere just minutes from Puerto de la Duquesa.

Under the new management of Chris and Darren, both of whom have worked in top class establishments in the UK and Spain, the emphasis is on fresh, locally sourced produce, with fish straight off the boat in Sabinillas.

Besides the mouth watering selection of dishes off the à la carte menu, The Courtyard have also introduced new initiatives for the summer, such as free children’s menu, takeaway homemade pizzas and burgers, and an early evening cocktail hour.

Darren, a keen wine aficionado, has put together an imaginative wine list and is constantly seeking out new additions for diners to enjoy.

The time of harvest is determined primarily by the ripeness of the grape as measured by sugar, acid and tannin levels with winemakers basing their decision to pick based on the style of wine they wish to produce. The weather can also shape the timetable of harvesting with the threat of heat, rain, hail, and frost which can damage the grapes and bring about various vine diseases. In addition to determining the time of the harvest, winemakers and vineyard owners must also determine whether to use hand pickers or mechanical harvesters.

The question of using mechanical harvesting is a source of contention in the wine industry. Mechanical harvesting of grapes has been one of the major changes in many vineyards in the last thirty years or so. A mechanical vine harvester works by beating the vine with rubber sticks to get the vine to drop its fruit onto a conveyor belt that brings the fruit to a holding bin, however, many such harvesters still have difficulties in distinguishing between ripe, healthy grapes and unripe or rotted bunches which must then be sorted out at the winemaking facility.

One of the benefits of mechanical harvesting is the relatively low cost of running a harvester that is able to run 24 hours a day and pick 80-200 tons of grapes in contrast to the 1-2 tons that an experienced human picker could do.

Despite the costs, some wineries prefer the use of human workers to hand-pick grapes. The main advantage is the knowledge and discernment of the worker to pick only healthy bunches and the gentler handling of the grapes. The production of some dessert wine like Sauternes require that individual berries are picked from bunches which can only be done by hand and in areas of steep terrain it would be virtually impossible to run a mechanical harvester through the vineyard.

Whichever method is used, modern or traditional, there are some great wines that are bound to be produced from this year’s harvests.

Estepona Floral Art Club is delighted to be welcoming Barbara Collier, NAFAS National Demonstrator from Camberley, Surrey, on Tuesday, November 17th 2009.

The demonstration will take place at ‘The Benavista Country Club’ Benavista, N340 Km 167; (behind the shops near the tennis courts) the programme commences 3.00 pm – 5.00 pm. Refreshments will be available before and after demonstrations.

Wow Factor 2009 After the unprecedented success of the first edition of the Wow Factor last year, the organising committee, comprising Talk Radio Europe, Steve Shappelle and Cudeca, has announced the official launch of the Wow Factor 2009 in aid of Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice.

This year the competition is going to be bigger and better and will be held in both Gibraltar and the Costa Del Sol. The heats in Gibraltar will be held on Saturday 24th October at the Caleta Hotel from 10.30 am followed by the semi-final the following day at St. Michaels Cave, starting at 20.30h.

The heats and semi-finals on the Costa del Sol will be held on Saturday 31st October and Sunday 1st November, at the Palacio de la Paz in Fuengirola (to be confirmed).

Following these two weekends of heats and semi-finals, twelve contestants will be chosen to go through to the Grand Final to be held at the Sala Fortuna in the Torrequebrada Hotel, Benalmadena on

The organisers are calling for any great new talent to sing their hearts out for this wonderful cause. Anyone who entered last year will be very welcome to enter again. This year the contest is open to solo singers and vocal groups, such as Girls Aloud, Westlife, etc. but not to bands, and they are retaining the minimum age of fifteen at the time of the heats.

There will be a panel of celebrity judges at the final and the organisers are looking forward to having an even bigger number of contestants this year. So, start rehearsing those songs, get your vocal chords exercised and your voices in tune!

The last of this year’s kittens have been born and many are being found in the most tragic of circumstances - weaned by their mothers who have moved to greener pastures or unfortunately culled, or perhaps, dumped by humans who couldn’t find homes for the offspring of the unspayed family pet?

These pathetic, but glorious little furry creatures with big innocent eyes look to each of us to save them. “The few of us who do take in abandoned cats and kittens and try to find homes for them, are full to capacity”, said Nanette, one of Estepona’s “cat women”. Over summer, she and Ana of Aura Vet Clinic, had over 40 cats in their care waiting for homes.

The answer to the never ending suffering of kittens and adult cats is the internationally accepted TNR method of neutering (Trap, Neuter, Release). Volunteers trap the cats, qualified vets and nurses neuter them and clip the left ear to indicate that they are neutered, and then the volunteers release them, once they have recovered, in the same location where they were caught.

Result - healthy cats that don’t breed!

Due to natural causes the cat populations gradually decrease and a happy balance is maintained with the original cats generally keeping the new comers away. These

Community Cats are very valuable to urbanisation’s, hotels, rubbish collection areas etc., as they do keep the rats and mice, roaches and snakes at bay.

A small group of “Cat People” got together earlier this month to form an Association to undertake these “Snip a Stray” clinics.

They will be very happy to hear from other “Cat People” who would like to get involved and thus get this project moving.

They are also keen to start a local cattery for abandoned cats and kittens where they can be kept while awaiting their new homes.

At present, in the Estepona-Manilva area, there are unfortunately very few people who take in these cat companions.

CAP presents its forthcoming events Club Charity and Pleasure is a social, nonprofit organisation based in El Paraiso, Estepona. They meet at 11 am each Wednesday morning at El Paraiso Country Club for coffee; their weekly activities include bridge, whist, bowls, art classes and Spanish lessons for beginners.

Other events and excursions include visits to the theatre and exhibitions, lunches and dinners at different venues along the coast, mystery trips, etc. Their full programme of events is published in their free quarterly magazine and regularly updated online.

Apart from enjoying themselves CAP raises money for local charities: mainly Aprona, Aspandem, Cudeca and Los Claveles.

Vets Corner This month we’ve brought you some recent curiosities found in print from around Spain and the world.

Anyone who has shared their life with a dog will have stories to tell about how smart their dog is and how they understand what is being said to them.

Recent investigations by Stanley Coren, a psychologist and researcher in animal behaviour at the University of British Colombia, have led him to conclude that some of our pets can count up to five, understand up to one hundred and fifty words and may try to trick their master for their own benefit! These are conclusions he reached and explained at the last annual meeting of the American Psychologic Association, when he gave a talk, On How Dog’s Think. S. Coren is the author of books on dogs and their behaviour as well as having revised other studies on the subject which led him to conclude that mans’ best friend has the capacity to

resolve complex problems bringing these canines closer to man and other primates than is traditionally believed. He postulated that the mental capacity of a dog may be comprabable to that of a child of about two to two and a half years of age! “Their impressive moments of brilliance and creativity may not make them Einsteins’ but they are certainly closer to humans than we think”, Coren points out.

He further postulates that this intellegence varies according to the type of dog and that breed is also an influential factor.

That there are three types of canine intelligence: instinct, adaptive (the ability to learn from the environment they are in and to resolve problems confronted with), and that of work and obedience (schooling).

He states that in the case of work and obedience learning the Border Collie is

number one followed by the Poodle and in third the German Shepard, basing these conclusions on work done both in the USA and Canada with 208 dogs. The list of the most intelligent dogs is completed by the Golden Retriever, Doberman, Shetland Sheep Dogs and Collies, and the Labrador Retriever. Coren assures that a normal dog could learn 165 words and the most intelligent ones can understand about 250!

The idea of such a large number of word understanding is base on work done with a dog named RICO who distinguished 200 words with a great capacity to learn quickly.

If that’s not enough some of our four legged friends have an understanding of numbers and maths, although this may not be sufficient to let them manage the household budget, they can count to four

or five, being able to detect errors like 1+1=1 or1+1=3.

While playing they try to play tricks deliberately or like their human counterparts to get prizes/rewards, with almost the same success tricking us as we have tricking them!

El color de las hojas Estuvieron todo el día laboreando la tierra, sintiendo el fuerte viento, jornal de viña que como lustro de vino y uva conocían bien al abuelo. Y el abuelo, una roca, lava ya endurecida, no vieja, entumida, deseaba mostrar el amor a su hijo y a su nieto, ansiando con la mirada y el temblor de las manos, descubrirles la honradez y el vigor de la tierra.

El tiempo no había inmovilizado al abuelo, y su nieto y su hijo, sabían que nunca lo haría, que su abuelo traspasaría el himno físico del cuerpo, montado en su edad más longeva, y lo remontaría como parra encendida en verde nuevamente hasta el sombrajo, para dar sombra familiar a su campo.

El vigor, el rigor de la tierra, el perfume del erguén, el abrazo de la lluvia en las pitas, en las palmeras plantadas a mitad de un tiempo cualquiera, un tiempo unido al asno, a la espiga, a la flor fecunda, a la noche sabia de antepasados y presentes: tiempo de vida renovada en carne de árboles, instrumentos de esperanza al injerto y a los frutos, el vigor que asume la responsabilidad de los años vividos y aún desean mantenerse a flor de aliento.

El abuelo sabía que llegaría la época de la maquinaria, del Land Rover, de las subvenciones de las Juntas de Comunidades.

El abuelo dio a entender que su jornada había acabado con la victoria de un sudor, de un sudor de sangre que ocupaba la historia de su mundo –el pulso que exagera la tierra labrada–, era como volverse atrás, hasta el hombre milenario, hasta el Adán, y allí ver en el arte de sembrar y esperar y recoger el fruto, la eternidad de una fuente de luz que golpea las estatuas y las herramientas que el hombre había inventado, sorprendiéndole la sabiduría como un regalo hermoso que le fuera ofrecido.

El viejo, que trabajó la tierra hasta el último momento, mostró su pesimismo ante el jugo artificial de aquella sociedad que se le venía encima a las cosechas, pero supo adaptar su piel a la inseguridad de los baches: el azufre, los insecticidas..., todo contra las plagas...; y se hablaba de un clima alterado que hacía sospechar lo peor para el fruto, para la tierra.

“La naturaleza, no podrá ser burlada, llegará un día en que ésta sí que engañará a la ciencia. La naturaleza ha constatado

los ciclos depurativos”, decía el abuelo que no sabía bien si lo había leído en un periódico o si se lo había contado el viejo almendro.

Su hijo y su nieto comprendían al anciano. Éste les pidió que se dirigieran junto al tronco del viejo níspero y excavaran, hasta hallar una pequeña lata de las que antiguamente venían con membrillo, que se vendían sobre todo para celebrar el postre dulce de ferias y meriendas de escolares sin brillo con babis a rayas. En los pueblos campesinos, esas latas venían bien para conservar los vegetales o las chacinas caseras, o para guardar documentos, ovillos de hilos y croché de tardes junto al olor penetrante de los jazmines.

Su hijo fue solo, y aunque quiso acompañarlo su nieto, éste se quedó junto al abuelo por petición de la madre. Todos estaban ansiosos por ver qué guardaba esa caja. Pero alguien la había quitado de allí, quizás un jornalero, o tal vez un animal que escarbara hasta esas profundidades.

Aquello hizo que el abuelo se enardeciera.

Pensó en todo lo que encerraba: “Son cosas de mi juventud –comentó a su hijo–.

Hace algunos años las guardé. Sobre todo hay una de gran importancia: un contrato en el que el dueño de estas tierras, además del usufructo de ellas, te hace propietario a ti después de mi muerte. Todo por agradecimiento a mi fidelidad. ¿Sabes lo que eso significa?, que tú mandarás sobre ellas, que tú contratarás jornaleros y explotarás las cosechas”.

El dueño de las tierras no tenía hijos pero aún así era sorprendente la generosidad que éste había demostrado.

El hijo preguntó si además del contrato se guardaban otras cosas en la caja. El padre, miró a su hijo y luego a su nieto y les dijo que había también una honda pequeña, hecha por él mismo, de buen esparto, con el que tantas veces hizo cuerdas o alpargatas para pisar las uvas en el lagar. También se encontraban dos libros que le entregaron siendo un muchacho: “La Condesa de Cela”, de Valle Inclán, y “La noche”, de Alejandro Sawa, edición de 1.918 en papel de revista, su precio era de diez céntimos, y anunciaba en la última hoja (pastas que no se diferenciaban en cuanto a calidad del resto de las hojas): depurativo higiénico, aguas de flor de oro para la caspa, lámparas, etc. “Esos dos relatos –dijo pensando en los dos libritos amarillentos– pertenecían

a mi abuela.” Y explicaría: “Tenía toda la colección, se la traía mi abuelo de la ciudad.

Por aquel entonces no habíamos venido a estas tierras, y al morir, eso fue en mil novecientos veinticuatro, solo hallamos de toda la colección esas dos novelas. La abuela siempre leía al anochecer. Leía lentamente y en voz alta, para que oyéramos las historias; y cuando alguno de nosotros se distraía, nos decía: “¡No será porque no estoy leyendo despacio!”, entonces todo lo mágico se rompía con esa exclamación, y al día siguiente repetía los mismos capítulos que no fueron debidamente atendidos”. “...Como ya es tarde –propuso el abuelo que a pesar de su estado de salud no admitía consejo alguno que le impidiera hacer lo que deseaba–, bajaré mañana contigo al amanecer para acercarme al níspero.”

El hijo tenía el pensamiento ocupado en el contrato: “El contrato debe estar registrado. No ha de haber problema. Solo tendré que dirigirme a la Notaría...”

Al día siguiente, se acercó con el abuelo al lugar donde debía estar la caja de lata. Era efectivamente el sitio donde él excavara sin haber encontrado nada. Pero al profundizar un poco más, se llevó una gran sorpresa, porque allí estaba, a la izquierda de lo que ya parecía un pequeño pozo. El abuelo la abrió allí mismo y comprobó que en ella estaba todo lo dicho. Se fueron a la casa y quedó tranquilo contemplando lo que podía ser el último sembrado de su vida.

“Ahora estoy cansado. Intentaré dormir”, dijo el anciano.

Su hijo sintió que su padre no estaba cansado sino enfermo.

Cuando su hijo entró en la habitación a la alborada del día siguiente, le vio vestido con la ropa de faena, la que tantas veces había utilizado para trabajar en el campo.

Tenía las botas llenas de tierra, y en una mano cerrada, dos hojas del viejo níspero, atrapadas con fuerza. Llamaba la atención un verde chorreando de la mano que los árboles perennes quieren dejar en el viento.

Cuánto más hubiera deseado hablar con él.

Se acercó a la ventana y pensó en llamar a los demás. “Qué disgusto se llevarán al ver al abuelo tendido, sin respirar...”

Volvió a mirar por la ventana antes de comunicar su muerte. Vio el campo encendido en suave color en sus primeras horas, y se dijo: “Plantaré una viña al otro lado del níspero y algunos árboles frutales, porque esa tierra me parece la mejor, y además lleva un tiempo en barbecho”.

Volvió a contemplar por la ventana el mundo como semblanza labriega. Una luna despistada clareaba en la altura, transparente, dejando ver el cielo celeste del amanecer. Un silencio de lágrimas comenzaba a rodar y expresaba las experiencias humanas que el tiempo hace comprender, de todo aquello que se va, se nos va y a la vez se queda heredero de la vida.

El Servicio de Correos en la Costa del Sol

Desconozco el origen del concepto de Comunidad Privada que parece estar excluida del servicio de correos, como si fuera un gueto, una isla a la que los empleados (los carteros) de esta empresa no tienen acceso, aunque en la página webb de Correos no se habla de ellas. ¿Será que se ha introducido por ventajas o intereses, por costumbre o por la pereza o carencia de los empleados?

Ciertamente que en la Costa hay comunidades privadas cerradas, con un guarda a la puerta vigilada las 24 horas del día y que prohiben la entrada a toda persona extraña a la urbanización.

No me refiero a esas comunidades, sino a esas otras, que son la mayoría, en las que no hay barreras, ni guardas, ni cámaras, ni obstáculos que impidan la entrada a otras personas, sino a comunidades abiertas, a veces en medio de centros comerciales, a las cuales tienen acceso personas, camiones y toda clase de vehículos, es decir: a comunidades que de hecho no se distinguen para nada de una calle peatonal del pueblo o de la ciudad en la que

están enmarcadas.

Basados en la obligación que supuestamente adquiere la empresa de Correos cuando recibe una carta con franquicia de entregársela al destinatario, nos hemos quejado a la oficina de atención al cliente de Correos ya dos veces.

Le preguntabamos por que sus carteros no distribuían las cartas a los destinatarios en sus domicilios.

La primera respuesta escrita fue que en ese caso improbable se debería a que los destinatarios no habrían sido empadronados en la ciudad y, por tanto, no constarían allí sus nombres.

La segunda respuesta que obtuve el día 27 de agosto de este año, 2009, el Responsable de Atención al Cliente de Correos, me contestaba: “Le comunicamos que no existe en la entrada de la urbanización un panel orientativo donde se especifique la ubicación de cada calle, ya que estas no constan en los mapas oficiales del ayuntamiento”.

En nuestra urbanización las calles están

visible y claramente señalizadas, los taxistas las conocen, los vecinos también, pero ¿si los ciudadanos ponen a la entrada ese panel orientativo que pide Correos, nos van a dejar las cartas en los buzones de los que residimos en las comunidades privadas de la Costa del Sol? Yo creo que sería un gran paso, primero: para que Correos cumpla su obligación a la hora de aceptar la responsabilidad de entregar una carta al destinatario; segundo: para que los cientos de miles de personas que viven en las comunidades privadas de la Costa valoren mejor a España y tercero: para aumentar el empleo en nuestro país.

Si a los 420 euros le añadieran algunos más tendríamos más carteros que resolverían su problema y el de la discriminación y abandono en que se encuentran los residentes de estas comunidades de la Costa del Sol española.

Hace bastante tiempo que los residentes de las urbanizaciones privadas, tanto españoles como extranjeros, se quejan de la deficiencia de los servicios de Correos, tanto por lo que se refiere al trato de los clientes en las oficinas, como a la distribucion de la correspondencia.

Esto repercute, si duda, en el deterioro de la imagen que ofrece España a un colectivo muy importantes que es el de los turistas.

Lamentablemente el lema que enarbolaba España para atraer a los turistas: España es diferente, se esta aplicando ahora en un sentido peyorativo.

Los que vivimos en las llamadas Comunidades Privadas a lo largo de la Costa, que somos muchos y casi todos los extranjeros, nos sentimos discriminados y carentes de los servicios mas básicos de la empresa estatal de Correos.

Los cinco campeones han obtenido su plaza en el Volvo Mundial Match Play de Finca Cortesín a través de la Carrera a Dubai, y se unirán a Sergio García, Paul Casey, Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, Retief Goosen, Camilo Villegas, Anthony Kim, Jeev Milkha Singh, ScoĴ Strange y Robert Allenby.

Dos medallas para el Club Internacional de Estepona en el Campeonato de Andalucía de Esgrima Se consiguieron dos medallas de bronce gracias a Alba Márquez en menores de 15 años que comparte la segunda posición del ranking general de la temporada junto con la también esteponera Cristina Ocaña y para María Maldonado en categoría femenina absoluta que finaliza tercera del circuito.

Además con los puntos obtenidos en categoría infantil, Ana Romero, Olatz Bilbao, Ana María Corzo y Naiara Moreno se clasifican entre las seis primeras del ranking andaluz de la temporada. Rosibel Vindel gracias a su sexto puesto en la competición queda entre las cinco primeras del ranking así como Alberto Zerrada que por un solo tocado, 15 a 14 en su asalto con el que a la postre fue el campeón de Andalucía no pudo revalidar su medalla de bronce consiguiendo el cuarto puesto. Estos resultados sitúan al club

esteponero en la élite de la esgrima andaluza.

En la Competición por equipos se obtuvo el cuarto puesto después de un magnifico asalto de nuestras tiradoras que perdieron el bronce por un emocionante 45-44 siendo ganador el equipo representante de Sevilla. El equipo masculino compuesto por Paul Holder, Juanjo Esquivel y Alberto Zerrada quedaron quintos eliminados por el equipo anfitrión que fue el campeón del torneo.

El fútbol femenino llega a la escuela del Arsenal en España Desde la llegada del equipo inglés hace 3 años a la zona de San Roque, su labor de formación no está pasando desapercibida. La escuela de fútbol, compuesta por jóvenes de la barriada sanroqueña de Guadiaro y Sotogrande, así como de otros puntos de la Comarca del Campo de Gibraltar, ha ido creciendo con el tiempo hasta convertirse en un referente para el fútbol de la comarca. Cumplido su tercer año de vida, la escuela ha querido dar un paso adelante incorporando así el fútbol femenino, poco desarrollado en la zona.

Arsenal es el equipo con más prestigio en Inglaterra en categoría de niñas y mujeres, habiendo ganado 31 títulos importantes desde su formación hace 22 años. Tienen habilidades y experiencia así como pasión por promocionar la participación de las jóvenes en este deporte, con una buena representación en el equipo nacional. Esto ha llevado a la escuela en España a desarrollar un programa en el que niñas

del Campo de Gibraltar puedan iniciarse en este deporte. El Arsenal iniciará sus entrenamientos el próximo día 7 de Octubre con una sesión de 6:30 a 8 de la tarde en el Campo de Puente Mayorga.

Estas clases contaran con la presencia de Sara Rodríguez, recién llegada después de tres años en Inglaterra y que es la responsable de desarrollar el fútbol femenino en la zona.

Women’s football comes to Arsenal’s soccer school in Spain

Two medals for Estepona’s International Fencing Club at the Andalucia Championships The team from the International Fencing Club of Estepona took two bronze medals at the recent Andalucia Championships with Alba Marquez in the under-15 and Maria Mandonado in the women’s category, in addition to this success points earned in the junior category put Ana Romero, Olatz Bilbao, Ana María Corzo y Naiara Moreno in the top six rankings for Andalucia this season. Vindel Rosibel’s sixth place gives a top five ranking and Alberto Zerrad just missed out on the bronze, losing to the eventual Andalucia champion 15 -14.

These results place the Estepona club in the elite of Andalucian

fencing.

In the team competition the club took fourth place, again missing out on bronze by 1 point, 45-44, in a thrilling match against Seville.

The men’s team of Paul Holder, Juanjo Esquivel and Alberto Zerrada were eliminated in the fifth round by the competition winners.

All in all a great result for the Estepona club, with in addition to the two bronze medals, having nine members in the top five of various categories, with options to represent Andalucia in the forthcoming Copa de España 2009, being contested in Valladolid on 25th October.

Since its foundation some three years ago, the Arsenal Soccer School, composed of youngsters from the Guadiaro and Sotogrande area of San Roque, along with players from other parts of the Campo de Gibraltar, has grown to become a focus for youth football in the region.

To celebrate this achievement the school has taken the step of introducing women’s soccer, which has been neglected in the region. Arsenal has a great track

record in youth and women’s soccer in the UK, having gained 31 titles since its formation 22 years ago. They have the skills and experience, as well as the passion to promote the participation of young women, and they have a good representation on UK national teams.

These qualities have been brought to Spain, where they have developed a training programme which commenced this month under the watchful eye of Sara

An open letter

Una carta abierta Estimado Editor: Esta es una carta abierta a la Alcaldesa de Manilva, Antonia Muñoz.

Muchos extranjeros, especialmente británicos, se quejan en los periódicos publicados en su idioma, sobre la ciudad sin ley. Escriben con la esperanza de que alguien en su ayuntamiento lo lea, traduzca y dirija su queja al funcionario que le corresponda.

Antonia Muñoz ha sido más que fiel a sus residentes extranjeros. Por lo tanto, pido a ‘The Resident’ que publique este escrito, porque sé que como será publicado en español, lo leerá.

Lamentablemente, tengo que decirle que Sabinillas, según un periódico Inglés, ha sido descrita como la ciudad del “Viejo Oeste”, ciudad sin ley, donde abundan gamberros .

Esta comunidad de pescadores se ha encontrado abrumada por el negocio del ladrillo. En el espacio de una generación, los pescadores y propietarios de tierras comunes de Manilva se han encontrado tratando de resolver los problemas fiscales y sociales inimaginables de sus antepasados.

La delincuencia juvenil es uno de los problemas que nuestros concejales deben tratar, que es, por supuesto, nada nuevo. Sin embargo, hace una generación, los delincuentes no amenazaban la vida y la integridad física con motos o en coches potentes de gran alcance a toda velocidad por las calles de un pueblo pacífico.

Se apodaran de las aceras con motos ruidosas y, más peligrosamente, con quads. No sólo son un peligro

para sí mismos, sino una amenaza para los peatones y otros usuarios de la carretera. Muchos de ellos son demasiado jóvenes para tener un permiso de conducir, y además son demasiado inexpertos para saber que, si causan un accidente, ninguna compañía de seguros pagará la indemnización a terceros.

Estos niños llenan el aire con sus estéreos de los coches con ruidos ininteligibles. Así, no tienen ningún concepto de que la gente normal encuentre el ruido una tortura. Tengo entendido que la Policía Local de Manilva tiene el equipo necesario para medir este ruido. ¿Por qué no usarlo?

Sé que no tenemos suficiente Policía Local para patrullar Manilva. Gracias a los especuladores avaros, el pueblo ha crecido fuera de control. Sé también que no hay suficiente gente en el padrón para justificar la presencia de la Policía Nacional o más agentes de la Guardia Civil.

Pero gracias a usted, Antonia Muñoz, Sabinillas como centro turístico, sigue floreciendo. Tan solo tenemos que ver las gentes felices, la gente normal que se pasea a lo largo de nuestro paseo marítimo. Su pueblo no tiene que emular Marbella o el gueto de lujo de Sotogrande.

Pero a menos que le diga a su Policía Local que frene de una vez por todas a estos personajes en dos y cuatro ruedas, Sabinillas no perderá su reputación del “Viejo Oeste”.

Dear Editor, This is an open appeal to The Mayor of Manilva, Antonia Muñoz.

Many foreigners, especially British, complain to newspapers published in their own language about lawlessness. They write in the vain hope that someone in their town hall will read, translate and direct their complaint to the appropriate functionary.

Antonia Muñoz has been more than faithful to her foreign residents. So, in asking ‘The Resident’ to publish this appeal, I know that because it will be published in Spanish, she will read it.

Sadly, I have to tell her that Sabinillas, according to one English-language periodical, has been described as a ‘Wild West town’ – a place where ‘cowboys’ hold sway.

This tiny fishing community has been overwhelmed by the property boom. In the space of one generation, ordinary fisher folk and Manilva’s land owners have found themselves trying to handle fiscal and social problems undreamed of by their forefathers.

Juvenile delinquency is but one of the problems our councillors face; it is of course not new. But a generation ago delinquents did not threaten life and limb on motor bikes and in powerful motor cars speeding along quiet village streets.

They commandeer the sidewalks on unsilenced motos and, more dangerously, ‘quad bikes’. Not only are they a danger to

themselves, but a menace to pedestrians and other road users. Many of them are too young to hold a driving licence; moreover they are too inexperienced to know that if they cause an accident, no insurance company will pay compensation to third parties.

These children fill the air with their car stereos blasting out unintelligible noise.

So brain-washed by it are they that they have no concept that ordinary folks find the noise sheer torture! I understand that Manilva Policia Local have the necessary equipment to measure this noise. Why do they not use it?

I know that we do not have enough Local Police to patrol Greater Manilva. Thanks to avaricious speculators it has grown out of control. I know too that there are not enough people on the padron to warrant a National Police presence and more Guardia Civil.

But thanks to you, Antonia Muñoz, Sabinillas as a holiday resort continues to flourish. Look at the crowds of happy, ordinary folks who stroll along our paseo maritimo. Your town does not need to emulate seamy, glitzy Marbella, or that upmarket ghetto Sotogrande.

But unless you tell your Local Police to clamp down once and for all on these twoand four-wheeled ‘cowboys’, Sabinillas will not lose its ‘Wild West’ reputation.
