Bien, ya estamos en febrero, y aunque para muchos es mejor que el tiempo no pase rápido, cuanta más distancia pongamos entre nosotros y el 2016 mejor. Hablando del 2016, el Ayuntamiento de Manilva acaba de celebrar su primer referéndum público, aunque no tan importante ni con resultados tan potencialmente desastrosos como cierto otro referéndum que me viene a la mente. No, éste era un voto popular para cambiar la estructura de la Feria de Manilva, y volver a las tres ferias tradicionales celebradas en cada uno de los centros de población del municipio coincidiendo con los días de sus santos patrones y vírgenes. El reférendum fue bien recibido por la población local e imagino que ésta no será la última vez que las decisiones locales se tomen a través de este proceso democrático. Para leer más y ver los resultados, consulta la página 17. Finalmente se están realizando trabajos para reparar las dañadas playas y paseos marítimos en toda la Costa del Sol, y si todo va bien, deberíamos volver a la normalidad antes de Semana Santa y de la llegada de visitantes para disfrutar de esta tradición religiosa. Hablando de tradiciones, este mes se inicia la temporada de Carnaval con muchos de nuestros pueblos disfrutando de un inicio lleno de color a la Cuaresma. El Carnaval está marcado por desfiles y las tradicionales actuaciones de las chirigotas y sus satíricas canciones, de las que no se libran ningún político, famoso y autoridad. Para aquellos que deseen la mejor experiencia de Carnaval, Cádiz es el lugar. Además a finales de este mes se celebra el Día de Andalucía, una fiesta regional que celebra el referéndum de 1980 por el que se votó de forma mayoritaria por el Estatuto de la Autonomía. Well here we are in February already and, whilst I don’t want to wish the year away, for many people the more distance we put between us and 2016 the better. Talking of 2016, Manilva Town Council have just undertaken its very first public referendum, albeit without the far reaching, and potentially disastrous results of a certain other referendum that I’d prefer not to dwell on. No, this was a public vote to change the structure of Manilva’s Summer Fair and roll it back to the three traditional fairs held in each of the municipality’s population centres around their patron saints’ days. The referendum was well received by the local populace and I imagine this won’t be the last time local decisions are made through this democratic process. To read more and to find out the result see page 17. Again with reference to last year, works have finally got under way to repair damage to beaches and promenades along the entire Costa del Sol, and all being well everything should be back to normal before Easter and the arrival of visitors for the Semana Santa celebrations. Talking of celebrations, this month sees the beginning of Carnival season with many of our local towns and villagers enjoying this colourful start to Lent. Carnival is marked by processions and the traditional performances by chirigotas, satirical music groups, something like a cross between barbershop and Monty Python, to whom no politician, celebrity or figure of authority is safe from their caustic wit. For those of you who would like to experience the ultimate Carnival experience then take a trip to Cadiz, where the whole city stops for Carnival. Another celebration at the end of this month is Andalucia Day, a regional holiday celebrating the referendum in 1980 in which the people of Andalucia overwhelmingly voted for the Statute of Autonomy. Hikaru Nakamura wins the 2017 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Masters USA's Hikaru Nakamura, was the winner of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Masters for a third consecutive year. He defeated Grandmaster David Antón Guijarro of Spain after a tense two-game speed playoff. Ju Wenjun won the Women's prize and takes home £15,000. But there was controversy surrounding the women's competition, which was won by Ju Wenjun who took home £15,000 after Women’s World Champion Hou Yifan from China gave away her game against Lalith Babu M R from India in the last round within five moves. In an exclusive interview with the Festival press team Hou Yifan tells Tania Sachdev she apologised to chess players, to her fans and those following the Gibraltar Masters. Hou Yifan said she had been dissatisfied and had been upset with the pairings throughout the tournament as she had drawn seven women players out of 10 rounds.

MTV presents Gibraltar Calling Tournament organiser, Brian Callaghan, interviewed directly after the Women’s World Champion, was disappointed at what had happened and felt she had let herself down. Being a World Champion he said brought with it a great responsibility. Although sympathetic about her reason for giving her game away, Mr Callaghan was quite clear that he did not believe the pairings

had been wrong or that the move by Hou Yifan had damaged the tournament. But he did refer to the world champion having had a “bad day at the office”. Mr Callaghan insisted the festival had welcomed her several times to the Rock and the festival had always been a keen promoter of the women’s game in chess and that this would continue into the future.

Día de Andalucía El Día de Andalucía se celebra el 28 de febrero y conmemora el referéndum del 28 de febrero de 1980 sobre el Estatuto de Autonomía para Andalucía, en el cual los andaluces votaron por el estatuto que convirtió a Andalucía en una comunidad autónoma de España. El Día de Andalucía se celebra en toda la región, pero un lugar donde tiene un significado importante es en Casares, lugar de nacimiento de Blas Infante, conocido como el “Padre de Andalucía”. Blas Infante hizo campaña por un estado andaluz durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, antes de ser ejecutado por las tropas de Franco en 1936. En muchos municipios y ciudades

de Andalucía, la gente decora sus balcones con la bandera de Andalucía y con banderolas que reflejan sus barras verdes y blanca. A menudo se celebran competiciones culturales. En algunas ciudades, sobre todo en la zona de Málaga, cierran los colegios por Semana Blanca.

Las obras de mejora de la carrera A-377 comenzarán en febrero Las obras tiene un presupuesto de 4.345.222 euros, tienen un plazo de ejecución de 12 meses y supondrán la mejora de la seguridad vial en los 29,200 kilómetros de longitud de la vía, que enlaza Casares con la AP-7 y A-7 en Sabinillas, por donde comenzarán los trabajos, y con la Serranía de Ronda a través de Gaucín. Pepe Carrasco, que ha asistido al acto acompañado del teniente de alcalde de Infraestructuras, Guzmán Ahumada, ha mostrado sus satisfacción por el inicio de las mejoras. ya que el estado de esta carretera A-377 es una de las principales preocupaciones de los vecinos de Casares, al tratarse de una vía muy utilizada y tener gran importancia para el desarrollo turístico y empresarial del municipio. Las mejoras de la carretera A-377 viene siendo reclamadas por el Ayuntamiento desde 2005, cuando el pleno de Casares aprobó la primera moción pidiendo su arreglo. interior, the AP7 motorway, and the Costa del Sol. The works, have a budget of almost 4.5 million euros and are due to begin in February, with an estimated completion period of some 12 months. This busy road has fallen into a bad state of disrepair and has been the subject of a long campaign, with the establishment of

a protest group back in 2012 comprising several municipalities most affected by the state of the road. Since then the group has continuously raised the issue at the Andalucian Parliament in Seville. A stone-laying ceremony was held in the middle of January at which a were present mayors and councillors from Casares, Manilva, and Gaucin.

El plazo permanece abierto a las personas que quieran inscribirse ya que las sesiones, son individuales y personalizadas, por lo que cada alumno podrá llevar su propio ritmo. El horario de las clases es los martes por la tarde de 17.30 horas a 22.00 horas, y el coste para los usuarios es de 7 euros por clases. Los exámenes por libre de acceso a la universidad para mayores de 25 y 45 años, son normalmente la última semana de Abril o primera semana de Mayo. Pueden realizarla en La Escuela Politécnica de Algeciras. La matricula se realiza en el mes de Marzo y tiene un conste que ronda los 80 euros, bastante inferior a la matrícula en clases presenciales.

Casares prepara un amplio programa de actividades para el Día de Andalucía Contará con actos culturales, institucionales y festivos: Destaca el acto de nombramiento de Hijos Adoptivos de Casares a Antonio Jerez y Pilar Losada; el ciclo de conferencias "Homenaje a los Símbolos Andaluces"; y la fiesta del Día de Andalucía con la entrega floral a Blas Infante, concierto, espectáculo de baile y orquesta La semana de actos comienza con una reunión en Sevilla, el lunes 20 de febrero, de la mesa de la Ruta de Blas Infante para promover junto a la Consejería de Turismo la promoción del recorrido por los municipios incluidos, como se anunció en FITUR. El mismo lunes por la tarde empieza la II Semana de Homenaje a los Símbolos Andaluces en la Casa Natal de Blas Infante con la conferencia “Homenaje a Lorca. Vida y obra de un poeta andaluz” a cargo de la profesora Rosario Valera de Maya. El ciclo incluye la intervención “Casareños en el Andalucismo Histórico. 19181936” de Benito Trujillano Mena, que será el miércoles 22 de febrero; y el Homenaje a Manuel José García Caparrós el

viernes con la inauguración de la exposición de su Documento Nacional de Identidad y la proyección del documental “García Caparrós, memoria de nuestra lucha”. Uno de los actos más aclamados es el nombramiento de Hijos Adoptivos de Casares a Antonio Jerez y Pilar Losada, que aunque se realiza por el pleno previsto para el martes 21 de febrero tendrá su celebración pública el sábado 25, con un acto institucional en el Centro Cultural Blas Infante. El 28 de febrero, Día de Andalucía, es una jornada muy especial en Casares. Al ser el lugar de nacimiento del padre de la Patria Andaluza, Blas Infante el pueblo vive un día de gran ambiente con actos institucionales y festivos a los

Una concesión que se realiza a la misma empresa que ha venido prestando el servicio hasta ahora aunque con nuevas condiciones. que requieren que la nueva ambulancia cuente con todas las características de una ambulancia de Soporte Vital Avanzado, tanto en cuanto a las dimensiones del vehículo como a la dotación de material sanitario. Unas especificaciones que han sido consultadas por el equipo de gobierno con Distrito Sanitario lo que ha supuesto que el proceso de adjudicación se haya dilatado en el tiempo. Como cada año el Ayuntamiento de Casares está poniendo medios para que no proliferen las procesionarias, las orugas que habitan en los pinos que pueden causar urticarias y alergias en personas y animales domésticos, y daños a los árboles. Para ello esta semana ha comenzado a aplicarse el tratamiento consistente en unos balines insecticidas que los operarios municipales están disparando a los bolsones de seda que le sirven de nido a estos insectos. Los trabajos han comenzado en dos puntos afectados de Casares Costa, en la zona verde de las inmediaciones de la gasolinera y en el aparcamiento de Playa Chica. Y paulatinamente continuará aplicándose en otros puntos del municipio. Como se ha demostrado otros

Casares acogerá el Campeonato de Andalucía de Raid el 25 y el 26 de febrero El Ayuntamiento colabora con esta competición regional organizada por el Club Hípico “Espíritu del Viento”

La competición se celebrará los días 26 y 27 del próximo mes y albergará el Campeonato Absoluto de 120 kilómetros y el de Jóvenes Jinetes de 80 kilómetros, una prueba que ya se había celebrado hace algunos años en Casares. El jinete local Francisco Aguayo, vocal del Club Hípico “Espíritu del viento”, participa y organiza

esta competición regional en la que se espera que participen entre 40 y 60 caballistas. Según ha explicado la presidenta del Club Hípico “Espíritu del viento”, Tracey Parker, la Federación Andaluza de Hípica se ha decantado por Casares para celebrar esta competición porque ya se habían celebrado otras pruebas similares en la localidad con muy buen resultado. El concejal de Deportes de Casares, Nicolás Morales, ha destacado la importancia de que el municipio sea la sede de este campeonato regional, ya que, por un lado pone a Casares en

el mapa de las competiciones de hípica y por otro supondrá un importante impacto económico en la localidad. Cada jinete llegará al municipio acompañado por su equipo, lo que sumado a los visitantes que vendrán para ver el espectáculo generarán entre 300 y 400 visitas. Según han avanzado desde “Espíritu del Viento”, están tratando de establecer un circuito de Raid permanente en Casares, unas instalaciones que además de jinetes podrían utilizar ciclistas y senderistas.

El Ayuntamiento continua el programa “Pinta una sonrisa en tu fachá” con la instalación de más de 300 macetas nuevas Con esta nueva reposición se cubren las solicitudes realizadas por los vecinos en la segunda convocatoria. Según ha explicado el alcalde se espera comenzar a instalarlas a finales de la próxima semana, cuando está previsto que lleguen las plantas del vivero. El Ayuntamiento ya tiene preparado las macetas que en esta ocasión han sido decoradas por el artista local David España. Se trata de 200 de tipo tradicional, 150 decoradas con motivos andaluces y 50 mediterráneos, 32 artísticas y 80 ánforas lacadas para la ruta árabe. Recordamos que este programa parte de una iniciativa del Plan de Participación Ciudadana. El Ayuntamiento de Casares se hace

response to a second tranche of requests from residents wishing to

collaborate in the scheme. The installation will begin as soon as delivery is taken of the plants from the nursery. On this occasion the pots have been decorated by local artist David España, who has a gallery opposite the Town Hall. They include 200 traditional style pots, 150 decorated with an Andalucian theme, 50 Mediterranean style, along with 80 glazed amphorae for the “Arab Route”. The programme is part of the Citizen’s Participation Plan with the Town Hall responsible for the installation of the planted pots, whilst the residents undertake to maintain them.

Estepona acogerá el I Concurso Internacional de Murales donde 10 artistas ejecutarán simultáneamente sus obras El alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, y el director territorial de CaixaBank en Andalucía Oriental y Murcia, Juan Ignacio Zafra, han presentado el I Concurso Internacional de Murales de Estepona, organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Estepona, con la colaboración de la Obra Social “la Caixa”. El regidor ha explicado que este concurso acercará a medio centenar el número de murales artísticos sobre edificios de Estepona, situando este proyecto cultural -en número y singularidad- entre los más destacados a nivel internacional. Asimismo, ha incidido en la envergadura de esta acción artística en la calle, que contará con diez profesionales que llevarán a cabo sus obras, de forma simultánea, en diferentes espacios de la ciudad. La iniciativa contempla realizar intervenciones artísticas en espacios de la periferia del centro histórico para contribuir a la transformación estética y social de estos entornos. Con este tipo de pinturas creativas en las fachadas de edificios, Estepona se sitúa junto a otras ciudades españolas y europeas a la vanguardia en cuanto a intervenciones artísticas en espacios al aire libre. Este museo al aire libre posee obras tan singulares como 'Reflejos del jardín', el mural vertical más grande de Europa realizado por un único artista donde simula un entorno natural en los alrededores del Parque Botánico-Orquidario, o 'Día de Pesca', que se convirtió en el mural vertical de mayor superficie de España, ambas creaciones del pintor realista José Fernández Ríos. De igual modo, además de estas obras hiperrealistas, hay otras más abstractas como la realizada en madera por el artista residente en Nueva York,

About Estepona’s Murals Route The Estepona Town Council has already executed over thirty artistic murals on buildings in different neighbourhoods of the town, within the municipal project to bring culture closer and revitalize these spaces through this expression of urban art. The initiative aims to provide artistic installations in various spaces on the periphery of the historic town centre to contribute to the aesthetic and social transformation of these environments. With this type of creative paintings on the facades of buildings, Estepona is situated alongside other Spanish and European cities at the forefront in terms of artistic interventions in outdoor spaces. This open-air museum has such unique works as 'Reflejos del jardín', the largest vertical mural in Europe by a single artist which simulates a natural environment around the Botanical Gardens and Orchid House, or 'Día de Pesca', which became the vertical mural with the greatest surface in Spain, both creations of the realistic painter Jose Fernandez Rios. Similarly, in addition to these hyperrealist works, there are more abstract ones such as the one made in wood by the resident artist in New York, Javier Infantes, or that incorporate more alternative techniques like graffiti, in the mural

produced by 'Nano4814'. Alongside these can also be found worksby Francisco Alarcón, Néstor Plada, Juanjo San Pedro, Curro Leyton, Conchi Álvarez, Eric Aman, Ana Torralba, Blanca Larrauri, Miguel González, Encarna de Hoyos, among others. Another interesting work was produced by inmates at the Alhaurín de la Torre prison which joins the others on this route. Other creations also celebrate "Quixote of the XXI century" by Curro Leyton,

a tribute to Cervantes on the 400th anniversary of his death. There has also been a mural dedicated to refugee children, entitled 'In Memoriam', a joint work by Pilar Castañón and María Romero. This artistic project complements the municipal initiative 'Estepona - Garden of the Costa de Sol', for the beautification and integral renovation of the urban landscape, which has already seen 87 streets redesigned to highlight the typical Andalucian decor.

Estepona registra el primer enero con bajada del paro de toda la serie histórica del SAE

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona valora los datos ofrecidos por el Servicio Andaluz de Empleo (SAE) sobre el paro registrado en enero, donde se pone de manifiesto que Estepona ha logrado el primer enero con bajada de paro de toda la serie histórica del SAE, que ofrece datos hasta 2005; en un mes que tradicionalmente experimentaba una subida en el número de desempleados. En concreto, un total de 129 personas han encontrado empleo en el último mes; elevándose a 925 la cifra de esteponeros que han conseguido trabajo durante el último año. Asimismo, el Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha valorado que la ciudad concluyera 2016 siendo el municipio de la provincia de Málaga con menor tasa de paro (20%), según los datos realizados por el observatorio datosmacro. com. El alcalde de Estepona, José María García Urbano, ha valorado

estos datos y ha anunciado que desde el equipo de gobierno se va a seguir trabajando para facilitar la creación de empleo en la ciudad. A ese respecto, ha apuntado que desde el Consistorio se continuará apostando por impulsar inversiones productivas que generen empleo en la ciudad, al tiempo que se dinamiza la economía local. Entre esos proyectos, destacan la remodelación integral y embellecimiento del casco urbano, que con su puesta en valor a través del proyecto ‘Estepona, Jardín de la Costa del Sol’ ha provocado una eclosión turística y comercial en la zona, que ha ido acompañada de la creación de nuevos negocios y la revitalización de los existentes. En este sentido, el Ayuntamiento sigue apoyando a los emprendedores, que desde 2012 no tienen que pagar licencia de apertura para una treintena de actividades.

Estepona will celebrate its annual Carnival on Saturday 25 February in the El Calvario park, next to the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre. Activities start on the evening of Friday 24 with a Carnival Party in the Senior Citizens Activity Centre. Programme: 12 noon to 2 pm: Children’s Party in El Calvario park with kids’ entertainment followed by a parade of participants for the election of the Ninfa and Momo (Carnival ‘Queen and King’), and the best children’s fancy dress. There is a prize of 100 euros in both categories. This is followed by performances during the afternoon by various carnival singing groups (Chirigotas) whilst enjoying food, including paella, at reasonable prices organised by Estepona’s “¿Ónde

La actividad, que será gratuita, mezclará música y arte con la exposición de acuarelas y acrílicos del pintor Emmanuel Janvier y el concierto de la mezzosoprano Clarice Williams, que interpretará piezas de canto, ópera y teatro musical. Clarice Williams, que reside actualmente en Estepona, cuenta con más de 20 años de experiencia y ha ofrecido tanto clases de canto como conciertos en diversos países como Reino Unido, Australia, Nueva Zelanda o Grecia. El evento, que dará comienzo a las 19.00 horas, tendrá lugar en la céntrica plaza Manilva, donde se ubica esta librería y espacio dedicado a las artes. El establecimiento ha optado por estos dos artistas porque están muy relacionados con Estepona, donde residen parte de su tiempo y desarrollan sus trayectorias artísticas. El pueblo dice "sí" a las tres ferias locales

n una encuesta histórica, los vecinos han sido los verdaderos protagonistas de una propuesta municipal que planteaba volver a las tres ferias de los núcleos urbanos. Para ello, durante la jornada de domingo 5 de febrero, todos los empadronados en el municipio mayores de 16 años pudieron ejercer su derecho a voto en esta encuesta popular celebrada por primera vez. Fueron 1.236 personas las que se acercaron a las urnas e introdujeron su voto con un resultado final de 847 a favor y 387 en contra. Un 70% de la población participante que dijo "Si" a sustituir la feria de Agosto por las tres ferias de Manilva, Sabinillas y El Castillo. Cabe recordar que Agustín Vargas, concejal de Fiestas, propuso esta novedosa idea de volver a las festividades con

Patricia Recio, como concejala de Participación Ciudadana, también tuvo palabras de agradecimiento a la ciudadanía por la gran participación y resaltó que: "consideramos que la participación de nuestros vecinos en la vida pública es fundamental y tenemos la intención de continuar realizando propuestas para saber la opinión generalizada". A partir de esta encuesta popular y del Sí de los manilveños a esta propuesta, Vargas comenzará a trabajar para ofrecer las mejores ferias a los vecinos y que todos puedan disfrutarlas como se merecen.

El parque canino será una realidad en breve

a concejala de Parques y Jardines, Paqui López, ha anunciado que el parque canino será una realidad y los amantes de los animales tendrán un lugar para que sus mascotas jueguen y disfruten de un espacio abierto y acondicionado. El alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez, el concejal de Turismo, Diego Urieta y el director de área, Juan Pareja han acompañado a la citada edil para comprobar el estado actual del recinto y las posibilidades que tiene. En estos momentos, con el proyecto realizado, comenzará la fase de licitación por lo que una vez elegida la mejor oferta, darán comienzo las obras de adaptación de la parcela ubicada por encima del Pueblo Mexicano.

Este espacio está ubicado en una zona verde donde también existe el carril bici, por lo que es ideal para acceder a ella y que los animales tengan su espacio propio.

Según comentaba López: "con esta nueva infraestructura damos respuesta a todas aquellas personas que requerían y solicitaban un lugar para poder llevar a sus mascotas", finalizó.

Reubicación de la zona de skate en Sabinillas

l Ayuntamiento de Manilva habilitará de nuevo una zona de skate en Sabinillas para que los jóvenes aficionados a este deporte puedan practicarlo sin ningún tipo de contratiempo. Cabe recordar que hubo protestas vecinales en el parque de Maicandil, donde se ubicó la zona de skate, ya que el ruido de los patines en las plataformas impedía el descanso.

Después de buscar un lugar que se pueda acondicionar, con buenos accesos para los deportistas y que no moleste a la vecindad, se ha decidido que su sitio sea el terreno municipal situado junto al Lidl en Sabinillas. El alcalde, Mario Jiménez, la concejala de Parques y Jardines, Paqui López y el director de área, Juan Pareja, se personaron en el citado lugar para comprobar que esta proyección tiene

cabida y que cumple con los requisitos necesarios para ubicar un parque deportivo de estas características. Una vez replanteado en el terreno, se comenzará a trazar el proyecto donde habrá que colocar una base sólida, arreglar los accesos, limpiar la zona y finalmente trasladar las rampas de saltos para que pueda ser utilizado lo antes posible.

Sabinillas skate park to be relocated Young skateboarders will soon be able to practice their sport once again with the relocation of the Sabinillas skate park. The move is in response to complaints from local residents about the noise from the skate park which was located close to their properties in the Maicandil Park. After a study by the Manilva Town Council a site has been identified which provides good access whilst at the same time not disturbing local residents. The new skate park will be located on municipal land next to the Lidl supermarket in Sabinillas.

Campus deportivo Semana Blanca 2017

El Club Deportivo Manilva Basket Base, de manera conjunta con el Área de Juventud y Deportes del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, proponen un nuevo campamento deportivo para el próximo período vacacional. Se trata del Campus Semana Blanca 2017, que se desarrollará en el Complejo deportivo de Las Viñas el 27 de febrero y los días 1, 2 y 3 de marzo. Como es habitual, el horario será de nueve de la mañana a dos de la tarde. Esta iniciativa está dirigida a los niños y niñas de entre tres y dieciséis años de edad. Según la organización el precio para

participar en esta actividad es de 20 euros o 5 euros por día. Además, los chicos que tengan que desplazarse desde cualquier otro núcleo del municipio contarán como siempre con transporte gratuito. El objetivo de este tipo de campamentos es fomentar el baloncesto y el deporte en general entre los jóvenes del municipio durante los periodos vacacionales. Basketball camp for Semana Blanca Manilva Basketball Club, in collaboration with Manilva’s Sports and Youth Department, is offering a sports camp for the Semana Blanca holiday. The camp will be held at the Las Viñas Sports Centre in Manilva on February 27 and March 1, 2 and 3 from 9 am to 2 pm. The camp is aimed at children aged three to sixteen year's and is priced a 5 euros per day or 20

euros for the four days. Free transport will be provided for those who live outside Manilva Town. The aim of the camp is to promote basketball and sport in general to the municipality’s youngsters during the holiday period. Manilva ha recogido más de 200.000 Kilos de envases ligeros en 2016

a Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental ha vuelto a batir sus récords de recogida de envases ligeros, según los datos dados a conocer por Margarita del Cid, presidenta de la Mancomunidad, y por José Antonio Gómez, delegado de Medio Ambiente. Durante el año 2016, los municipios mancomunados se han acercado a los diez millones de kilos de envases ligeros, concretamente 9.737.819 kilos en total de la Mancomunidad, lo que representa un máximo histórico.

La recogida se ha incrementado un 0,36 por ciento con respecto al año anterior. Parece una subida pequeña, pero no lo es. Hay que tener en cuenta que estos datos son muy buenos, y cuando ya se tiene un alto nivel de recogida, subir esos porcentajes resulta complejo, según informó el delegado de medioambiente del ente mancomunado. Un dato muy significativo es que mientras nuestro ratio de recogida es de 21,1 kilos por habitante y año, la ratio de Andalucía es de 10 kilos por habitante y año y la de España es de 12,7. En lo que a Manilva se refiere,

nuestra localidad ha recogido en 2016 un total de 210.616 kilogramos de este tipo de envases. En este momento en la Costa del Sol hay 4.037 contenedores, lo que arroja una ratio de un contenedor por cada 115 habitantes. Tanto el alcalde, Mario Jiménez, como el concejal de Medio Ambiente, Dean Tyler Shelton, se mostraron satisfechos de conocer estos datos y recibir este reconocimiento que expone el nivel de compromiso de nuestros vecinos por el cuidado del entorno. Además se agradeció la labor desarrollada por la anterior concejala de Medio Ambiente.

200 tonnes of plastic and tin containers collected in Manilva last year The Association (Mancomunidad) of Municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol has once again beaten their record for the collection and recycling of plastic containers and tin cans, according to data released by Margarita del Cid, President of the Mancomunidad, and José Antonio Gómez, Environment delegate. During the year 2016, the joint municipalities have collected almost ten million kilos of light packaging, specifically 9,737,819 kilos in total, representing a historic

high. Collection has increased by 0.36 percent over the previous year. It looks like a small increase, but it is not. It must be taken into account that the western Costa del Sol already has a high level of collection, and raising those percentages is a great achievement. The collection rate in this region is 21.1 kilos per inhabitant per year, whilst the figure for Andalucia is 10 kilos per inhabitant per year and that of Spain is 12.7. As far as Manilva is concerned, the

municipality has collected in 2016 a total of 210,616 kilogrammes of this type of packaging. El Concejal de Extranjeros asiste a un seminario con el Vicepresidente de la Cámara de Comercio y el Cónsul Británico El pasado 3 de febrero tuvo lugar en Marbella un seminario sobre el Brexit al que acudió el concejal de Extranjeros Residentes, Dean Shelton. Manilva es ya nuevo miembro de las Cámaras de Comercio británicas en España siendo el citado edil su representante. El anfitrión principal fue el vicepresidente de la cámara, Derek Langley, quien presidió y presentó a varios portavoces, tales como Theresa Mays y la voz británica oficial en España, el embajador Simon John Manley. El mensaje principal fue que la ciudadanía

esté tranquila, ya que los posibles cambios no se llevarán a cabo a corto plazo. El Cónsul británico de Andalucía, Charmaine Arbouin, hizo un compromiso especial de asistir al municipio de Manilva próximamente para que los británicos residentes tengan la oportunidad de expresar sus preocupaciones. Esta visita será para todo el que quiera asistir, no solo los residentes de Manilva. Beyond Brexit - A talk on Brexit from the horses mouth Manilva as a new member of the British Chambers of Commerce Spain, represented by Councillor Dean Tyler Shelton, attended recently a seminar on the future of Britons in Spain. The talk was well promoted and attended by both members of the press, speakers and chamber members. Hosted by the vice president of the Chamber, Mr Derek Langley, presided and presented the various speakers, not least Theresa May's and the UK official voice in Spain, British Ambassador Mr Simon John Manley. The overall message was stay calm, nothing will happen any time soon and for now it's trade and live as you would normally. In all the negotiations following the enactment of article 50 the interests and concerns of traders, commercial entities and not least the hundreds and thousands of Brits living in the EU will be primary. To this end the British Consul to Andalucia and the Canary Islands, Charmaine Arbouin, made a commitment

that there will be a similar talk to this one in Manilva in the coming months so that people can voice some of those concerns. This talk will be open to the general public of not just residents of Manilva but residents and traders in the surrounding area. The UK is and always will be a champion for free and open trade with the world, its what has defined our history and will define our future. Spain or Spanish talent seeking to work or being attracted to living in the UK reciprocally will not be excluded from that ethos and or negotiations. It was stressed that the UK is ultimately confident of a successful and positive outcome for both the UK and the European Union. When asked about how the UK wanted to see the EU, the reply was unequivocal that the UK desires and needs the European Union and the Euro to succeed in its own right.

Do You Want To Be A Fully-fledged Spanish Citizen? En este caso, hablamos de Alejandro Agüera Ledesma, un joven de 9 años que pertenece al C.D. Manilva Basketbase 2012 en categoría pre-mini aunque es en el atletismo donde está consiguiendo grandes logros pesa a su temprana edad. Reunión con el Secretario de Estado de Seguridad Fiesta de la juventud para urante un reciente de seguridad con el Secretario gente de Manilva para tener una San Valentín

encuentro de la Mancomunidad, la organización que representa a los once municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental, el Concejal Dean Shelton, junto con alcaldes, concejales, jefes de policía, representantes de los gobiernos provinciales y regionales, se reunieron para hablar de asuntos

de Estado de Seguridad español, José Antonio Nieto Ballesteros, quien es el jefe de todas las fuerzas policiales del interior, aduanas, etc. de España. Durante la reunión, el Concejal Shelton, en nombre del Alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez, expresó públicamente las preocupaciones y deseos de la

presencia policial de la Guardia Civil de 24 horas en el municipio, junto con una petición de revisar la ley para que sea más fácil, y completamente legal, instalar CCTV en zonas públicas en las que existen problemas de seguridad. Aunque alabó el trabajo de la Policía Local de Manilva, señaló que están seriamente sobrecargados, en algunos casos haciendo el trabajo de varias fuerzas de seguridad diferentes, y no tienen el equipamiento ni la experiencia para tratar con robos en casas y vehículos e investigaciones de escenas de crimen. El Concejal Shelton continuó declarando que la Guardia Civil debería ayudar más a aliviar la carga, pero solo ofrecen en este momento un servicio y horas al público limitadas en su cuartel en Sabinillas. En respuesta a esto, el Secretario de Estado dijo que personalmente estudiaría estos temas y solicitaría que el cuartel de la Guardia Civil en Sabinillas pasará a servicio de categoría A1, lo que mejoraría la situación en el futuro próximo. El Concejal Dean Shelton contó a The Resident tras la reunión que “el problema no se ha resuelto, pero creo que es justo usar esto como ejemplo de por qué necesitamos concejales representantes para luchar por nuestros derechos, en este ejemplo concreto, y en todos los niveles de gobierno. Éste es mi trabajo, que vosotros me habéis confiado, para hacer todo lo posible. Gracias por vuestro apoyo continuo”.

Meeting with Secretary of State for Security Saint Valentine Party in Manilva During a recent meeting of the Mancomunidad, the organisation representing the eleven municipalities of the western Costa del Sol, Councillor Dean Shelton, along with mayors, councillors, local police chiefs, representatives of the provincial and regional governments, met to discuss security matters with the Spanish Secretary of State for Security, José Antonio Nieto Ballesteros, who is the head of all of Spain’s interior police forces, customs, etc. During the meeting, Councillor Shelton, on behalf of the mayor of Manilva, Mario Jimenez, publicly voiced the concerns and desire of the people of Manilva for a full-time 24 hr Guardia Civil police presence

in the municipality along with a request that the law be revised to make it easier, if not fully legal, to install CCTV in public areas in which there are security problems. Whilst praising the work of the Local Police force in Manilva, he pointed out that they were seriously overstretched, in some cases doing the work of several different forces, and not having the equipment or expertise to deal with home and vehicle break-ins and scenes of crime investigations. Councillor Shelton continued by stating that the Guardia Civil should shoulder more of the burden, but currently only provide a limited service and opening hours at their station in Sabinillas. In reply the Secretary of State

replied that he would personally study our concerns and request that the Guardia Civil station in Sabinillas be upgraded to a category A1 service, and would update us on the situation in the near future. Councillor Dean Shelton told The Resident shortly after the meeting that “this issue is by no means resolved but I think it only fair for me to use this as an example of exactly why we need representative councillors to fight our corner, in this particular example as it is, at every level of government possible. This is my job, one that you have all in one way or another entrusted in me to do to the best of my capability, thank you for your continued support.”

El ayuntamiento resuelve el plan especial BIC zona Manilva Council resolves the arqueológica del entorno del castillo BIC special plan for the Castillo Nos tenemos que remontar al archaeological site año 2005 cuando Manilva recibió de la Junta de Andalucía la declaración como Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) para el Entorno del Castillo de La Duquesa. Dos años después, la Gerencia de Urbanismo intentó llevar a cabo un plan especial para proteger los alrededores del Castillo, que por problemas burocráticos y de planeamiento no se ha podido aprobar hasta el pleno del pasado jueves. Los dos grandes inconvenientes por los que la puesta en marcha del proyecto BIC no ha sido posible durante una década fueron la insuficiencia de los recursos hídricos y el no tener la garantía de acceder al agua potable. Una vez resueltos los citados problemas con el visto bueno de la Dirección General de Planificación y Gestión del Dominio Público Hidráulico, las actuaciones necesarias podrán realizarse una vez las haya aceptado la Junta de Andalucía. Según comentó el alcalde de Manilva, Mario Jiménez: "después de más de diez años con este problema, por fin podemos ver la luz y que este proyecto sea una realidad para el bien de nuestro

municipio", apuntó. En el último pleno ordinario se aprobó definitivamente el Plan Especial BIC zona arqueológica Entorno del Castillo de la Duquesa. El concejal de Urbanismo, Antonio Barragán, explicó a los presentes que se proyecta para

esta zona la creación de un museo que le dará un mayor valor turístico y cultural. El enclave se divide en dos zonas, por un lado está la fortaleza del castillo del siglo XVIII y por otro el yacimiento de la villa marítima romana de los siglos II y V.

We have to go back to 2005 when Manilva received from the Junta de Andalucia the designation as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) for the Castle of La Duquesa and its surroundings. Two years later, the Planning Department tried to carry out a special plan to protect the surroundings of the Castle, which due to bureaucratic and planning problems could not be approved until the council session last Thursday. The two major drawbacks for which the implementation of the BIC project has not been possible for a decade were insufficient water resources and lacking the guarantee of access to drinking water. Once these problems have been resolved with the approval of the General Direction of Planning and Management of the Public Hydraulic Domain, the necessary actions may be carried out once they have been accepted by the Regional Government of Andalucia. According to the mayor of Manilva, Mario Jiménez: "After more than ten years with this problem, we

can finally see the light and that this project is a reality for the good of our municipality," he said. In the last ordinary council session, the BIC Special Plan was approved definitively for the archaeological zone of the Castillo de la Duquesa. Councillor for Planning, Antonio Barragán, explained to those present that this area is being planned for the creation of a museum that will give it a greater tourist and cultural value. ADANA President Mary Page said that the success of the scheme was entirely down to the expertise of ADANA Treasurer Reg Winkworth, a qualified electrician who had for many years run a home maintenance

business on the Costa Del Sol. 'Because of his experience and knowledge, Reg was able to plan and supervise the whole process', she said. 'We are probably the only kennels in the Province of Malaga, maybe the whole Costa del Sol, to be 100% 'green'' ADANA takes in and rehomes abandoned dogs in the Estepona and Manilva area and has always been conscious of wider environmental implications. 'Our kennels are situated in an area of outstanding beauty, in the Parque de los Pedregales, and we want to help maintain the integrity of that environment', added the President.

La unidad en un descampado tronando desafíos, buscando continentes nuevos, amores nuevos, espacios para bailar la taquicardia de una noche joven que ya pasó para siempre. Porque un amor de tantos años ni se olvida, ni se detiene en el brocal del pozo, mas reduce el corazón y lo asfixia cuando se siente herido por la sumisión de uno de los dos. Sé que puedo hundirme más allá de otras oscuridades, pero me niego, me niego a morir por el amor, aunque por él ya voy agonizando, por eso, quiero comenzar un nuevo día atendiendo a las potencias del universo, atrapando la luz que me haga respirar. Rod marcha de nuevo por Cudeca Cuando Rod Andrew fue diagnosticado con cáncer de próstata en 2014 se temió lo peor, pero gracias al tratamiento y a toda la ayuda que recibió de la organización benéfica para la lucha contra el cáncer, Cudeca, se recuperó totalmente. Rod estaba tan agradecido por toda la ayuda prestada por Cudeca, que decidió darles algo a cambio, y ya que le gustaba caminar (quizá por sus treinta años como lechero en Reino Unido), decidió realizar una caminata patrocinada desde Málaga a Sabinillas, y un evento de recaudación de fondos en O´Callaghan´s. Seguro que piensas que este desafío fue suficiente, pero no. Rod está a punto de repetirlo, pero esta vez hará una doble maratón, más de 83 kilómetros en 24 horas. Realizará esta proeza desde el mediodía del viernes 28

thirty years as a milkman back in the UK, he decided on a sponsored walk from Malaga back to his home town of Sabinillas, Manilva, and a fund raising event in his local O’Callaghan’s. You’d think that challenge would be enough, but no, Rod is about to repeat his effort, but this time he will be doing a double marathon, over 52 miles (83 kms) in 24 hours.

He will be undertaking this feat from noon on Friday 28 to noon on Saturday 29, followed by a fundraising barbecue and concert at O'Callaghan's in Sabinillas. Look out for collection tins and sponsor forms which will be going out at the beginning of March or visit the Cudeca website and see how you can support Rod’s Double Marathon Challenge.

The Goldies fund 2 new cars for Cudeca Home Care Teams On 30th January, The Goldies, a group of enthusiastic young-minded Cudeca support volunteers, have delivered two fantastic new cars to Cudeca Centre in Benalmadena. Both cars will be used by Cudeca in their Home Care programme. The following people attended the event, Joan Hunt, Founder & Honorary President, Rafael Olalla, Financial Director & Deputy Chief Executive, together Suzy Rowe, Tom Allan and other members of The Goldies. On behalf of Cudeca, Joan Hunt received this wonderful gift, and thanked Suzy Rowe and her fantastic group of dedicated volunteers. The Goldies started their fund raising activities for Cudeca in early 2015. They are formally recognized by Cudeca as Fundraisers. In 2016, the group raised more than 60,000€, through the organisation of almost 30 exciting events and

Rod strides out again for Cudeca When Rod Andrew was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2014 he feared the worst, but thanks to treatment and all the help he received from local cancer charity Cudeca he made a complete recovery. Rod was so grateful to Cudeca for all their help that he decided to give something back and being a keen walker, probably from his

campaigns. A lot of enthusiasm and work is involved, although always balanced with putting the “fun” into fundraising. These 2 brand new cars will serve Cudeca Home Care Programme for many years. A Cudeca home

care team may drive up to 20.000 km. each year, visiting an average of 200-250 patients and families. The teams care for approximately 1.300 patients and families each year throughout all of Málaga Province.

Show your love by donating food this Valentine’s February is the month of love, but rather than just treating that special someone, optical chain Specsavers Opticas are asking people to show their love for the most disadvantaged in their community by making a small food donation this month. They are collecting non-perishable food for the Spanish Federation of Food Banks in all 8 of their stores on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Mallorca throughout the month, which will then be donated to the local food bank in their province. They hope residents will get behind the campaign. The Costa del Sol’s Food Bank is Bancosol, a non-profit organisation founded in 1998. Since then it has been growing and changing to adapt to the constantly increasing number of people who need them and provide as much as they possibly can. In 2016 they distributed 6 million kilos of food to 50,000 disadvantaged people in the Malaga province. Currently, as well as distributing food, they are running a project to help beneficiaries of food donations into training and internships in order to aid these vulnerable people to find work. In order to meet the growing need for assistance, they require

donations from individuals, organisations and companies and Specsavers Opticas has taken up the challenge to make a difference this February. From the 1st to the 28th of February, anyone can drop off their food at their local store during opening hours. At the end of the month it will be donated to Bancosol Food Bank, for them to distribute in the community via partnerships with local charitable organisations. Bancosol are particularly in need of oil, tinned fish, preserved meat and meals in a can such as soups and stews, although any donation is of course welcome. If you would like to see one of CAB Spain’s advisers then pop along to the shop on Wednesday morning, although it is advisable to book an appointment as it can sometimes be busy. Llega la época de la orugas Thaumetopoea pityocampa, o sea, la procesionaria, que estas semanas están saliendo de sus nidos de nuevo, ya que el clima se calienta y aproximamos la primavera. Estas orugas podrían estar fuera ahora o es posible que no vayan a verlas hasta abril, dependiendo de dónde se encuentre. Lo principal a recordar es que estén atentos en su búsqueda y que tengan cuidado en zonas donde haya muchos pinos. Mantenga sus mascotas alejadas y no trate de tocarlos o manejarlos. Los pelos blancos con los están cubiertos los nidos contienen una fuerte sustancia irritante y tóxica. Esta forma de pasear en fila es una estrategia de protección que da la impresión de una serpiente para disuadir a los posibles depredadores, como las aves, por ejemplo. Si alguna parte de la fila de las orugas se altera se envía un mensaje a todos los demás y liberan su sustancia irritante, desde los finos pelos que cubren los cuerpos de las orugas, hacia el intruso. Esta irritante no es muy diferente a la quemadura de ortigas, inicialmente, aunque algunas personas tienen una reacción alérgica alta y pueden necesitar tratamiento médico. En el caso de los bebés y los perros este veneno puede ser fatal. Los nidos de esta oruga, al estar lleno de este irritante, las personas que trabajan o que pasan por debajo de los árboles con nidos pueden notar, como mínimo, una ligera irritación ocular y/o problemas respiratorios

debido al polvo flotando en el aire. ¡Algunas personas han perdido un ojo y algunas animales han fallecido debido al efecto de este toxico, en los casos de un contacto más intenso!

Time to remember the procession caterpillars, Thaumetopoea pityocampa, as they are coming out again, as the weather warms up and Spring approaches. These caterpillars are

starting to come down from their nests in pine trees now or you may not see them until April depending upon where you are. The main thing to remember is to be on the lookout and to be careful. Keep your pets away and do not try to handle them. The white hairs are covered with and contain a very strong irritating toxic substance. This marching off in lines is a protective strategy giving the impression of a snake to deter would-be predators, birds for example. If any part of the caterpillar train is disturbed a message is

sent to everybody on board and an irritant is released from the fine hairs covering the caterpillars’ bodies towards the intruder. This irritant is not initially dissimilar to the burn of stinging nettles but it is much more noxious, some people have a severe reaction and may need medical treatment. In the case of young babies and dogs this irritant can be fatal. The nests themselves are full of this irritant, individuals working or passing underneath trees with nests may notice mild to severe eye irritations and/or respiratory problems, in the mildest of cases due to slight irritation from the powder drifting through the air. People have lost an eye and animals have died in cases of more severe exposure! The best advice to avoid problems with them stay away from them and their nests, if you have a pine tree with a nest seek out the help of a professional.

Gymnastics Gymnastics is more than just sport! Gymnastics is a sport of dedication, athleticism and determination.

La gimnasia es más que un deporte. Es una actividad de dedicación, atletismo y determinación. Los gimnastas entrenan duro para mantener su fuerza, equilibrio y flexibilidad. Los gimnastas no solo consiguen recompensas por ganar competiciones, sino que cosechan beneficios para su salud física y mental. Es un deporte donde se realizan ejercicios que requieren equilibrio, fuerza, flexibilidad, agilidad, resistencia y control. Los movimientos en la gimnasia contribuyen al desarrollo de los grupos musculares de los brazos, piernas, hombros, pecho y abdomen. La alerta, precisión, atrevimiento, autoestima y disciplina son características mentales que también se desarrollan por medio de la gimnasia. De pequeña hice gimnasia a nivel de condado y me encantaba, y cuando me convertí en entrenadora me sorprendió bastante cuántos movimientos y requisitos físicos provenían de la historia de la gimnasia. En Sotogrande (en el Colegio Internacional de Sotogrande) hay un pequeño club de gimnasia que ha estado funcionando durante dos años, y enseña a los niños y niñas a partir de los 4 años. Utilizan una selección completa de equipos desde barras olímpicas, salto,

o suelo. Es increíble ver a los niños doblarse y flexionarse, lo que hace que nos demos cuenta de los poco flexibles que somos los adultos. A veces ponernos los calcetines es todo un desafío, imagina andar con tus manos y ¡o hacer un salto mortal hacia atrás! Así que, ¿podemos volver a nuestra movilidad anterior (movimiento de articulaciones) o a nuestra flexibilidad mediante ligamentos y tendones? La respuesta es sí, hasta cierto punto. Esto no significa que puedas ir al gimnasio mañana y de repente estar en forma o crear formas increíbles con tu cuerpo, pero mediante ejercicios específicos, puedes estar más fuerte, y con un programa de movilidad podrás moverte mejor con cada vez más movimientos diarios. Gymnasts train hard in order to maintain their strength, balance and flexibility. Gymnasts not only reap the rewards of winning competitions, but they reap benefits for physical and mental health. It is a sport involving the performance of exercises requiring balance, strength, flexibility, agility, endurance and control. The movements involved in gymnastics contribute to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, chest and abdominal muscle groups. Alertness, precision, daring, selfconfidence and self-discipline are mental traits that can also be developed through gymnastics. As a child I did gymnastics at county standard and absolutely loved it, and when I became a trainer I was quite surprised at how many moves and physical requirements came from the history of gymnastics. In Sotogrande (based at Sotogrande international school) is a small and friendly gym club, it's been running for 2 years and teaches boys and girls aged 4 years plus.

They use a full selection of equipment from Olympic bars, vault, tumbling floor through to floor. It is amazing to watch kids bend and flex, and, it makes adults realize how inflexible they are, putting on their socks is a major challenge let alone walking on their hands or doing a back somersault! So, can we get back our previous mobility (joint movement) or our flexibility through ligament and tendons? The answer is yes, to some degree! This doesn't mean that you can go to the gym tomorrow and suddenly you are supple enough or strong enough to throw your body into some amazing shapes, but it does mean with regular practice of specific exercise, you can become stronger and with a mobility program you can move better with an improved range of day to day movements. he start of a New Year, new season and new stories. This month we witnessed yet another thriller on The European Tour. As expected, there was tales of triumph for some players and stories of missed cuts for others. Graham Storm, stormed his way to victory at

the BMW South African Open, beating World No 2, Rory McIlroy on the second playoff hole. Only two months prior, Graham Storm fell €100 short on the official European Tour money list and lost his playing rights on the tour, but with victory in South Africa he has secured his card once again for the following years tournaments. Young English golfer Tommy Fleetwood claimed victory at the HSBC Championships in Abu Dhabi and Spain’s very own living legend, Sergio Garcia claimed yet another victory to add to his impressive CV. Lifting the Dallah Trophy at The Omega Desert Classic at the Emirates GC in Dubai was Sergio’s 12th win on the European Tour in his 250th appearance. With the three shot victory over the current Open Champion winner Henrik Stenson, Sergio pocketed his share of the $2.6 million prize fund and moved back into the top ten golfers in the world. What was even more exciting for me was the arrival of Anton “The Silent Assassin” Karlsson, playing his rookie season on The European Tour. One of our winter locals, Anton narrowly missed out on a top ten finish in only his second event. Anton managed to shoot rounds of

68,73,69 and 67 to finish in tied 13th spot alongside my golfing hero from South Africa, Ernie Els, both at -11 at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in Doha. Closer to home I also had the pleasure of watching our other “Swedish Local” Marcus Svensson win the Andalusian Amateur Championships at his home course in Spain, Guadalmina GC. Marcus who bases himself in Estepona for most of the year to practice and train his golf, crowned himself the Andalusian Amateur Champion before heading to America, where he will be studying at Florida State University on a golfing scholarship. I have no doubt that he will become the next Henrik Stenson in years to come. If you are a betting person put a fiver on him winning a major at some point in his career, I know I am going to. Deciding to put my golfing knowledge and experience to

full use, I am pleased to finally achieve a personal goal of mine. This year I will be working as a full time caddie (as well as a writer). Having helped encourage so many young golfers over the last few years and watched them grow in stature and ability, I have decided to try my hand at being a full time caddie. I will be walking the fairways, hunting for victories alongside my players and my success is going to be measured in the results that I can achieve. My role as a caddie is to make my golfer play the best golf he can on the day and with my love and passion for the sport I am positive that it is only a matter of time before I will be caddying for a winner. My first opportunity was working with the O Driscoll brothers from Ireland. The three Irish boys came to spend the month in Casares, to prepare for their upcoming season. We trained on Sabinillas beach and

at the local golf courses, while competing on The Gecko Tour. Tommy O’Driscoll (20) has a full card on The Alps tour for this season while brothers Eamonn O Driscoll (18) and Oshin O Driscoll (16) are still amateurs, working on improving their game. Based at Clement Ader Golf Club in Paris the brothers decided to come and spend a month with me in the Costa Del Sol and I was thrilled at the results we achieved. Caddy's Corner After caddying for Oliver Jacobson at the Andalusian Amateur championship, I took on a new challenge with not one, but three young golfers. Twenty year old Tommy O'Driscoll who turned pro a year ago and plies his trade on the Alps Tour, came to spend a month in my training camp, alongside his two brothers Eamonn (18) and Oshin (16). The two young amateur players had an opportunity to go and practice and learn from Mark McCrea and Nick Lane of The Players’ Academy while Tommy and myself worked on forming a partnership out on the course in preparation for the upcoming Gecko Tour events. Thank you to Jason Callow (General Manager) Estepona Golf Club and the staff at Casares Golf who allowed us the use of their course to train and practice. Inspired by Seve Ballesteros, we also trained on Sabbi beach, whilst fishing for our dinner, giving the Irish boys a real feel of golf in Andalucía. Seeing the boys relax in the way us locals know how to, it didn’t take long for the results to start coming in. Learning how to work as a team the boys started to understand that positive things come to positive people. In my opinion friendly golfers normally play better, or at

least friendly golfers get support in return. Having not played a tournament in over a month, Tommy used the first event we entered to blow away the winter cobwebs and then fired a 6 under par second round in the next tournament to make it into a three way play off against Finn Fleer (GER) and Jordi Garcia De Moral (ESP), narrowly missing out on the third hole. The following week it was younger brother Eamon’s turn with me on his bag. Entering the Gecko Tour event at Marbella Country Club, Eamon fired a great second day score that included five birdies leaving him in the 4th amateur place. A great achievement for the young man’s first event. Even the youngest brother saw some action, losing out to the Estonian player, Sander Aadusaar on the final hole of a Players’ Academy internal competition. Having played in only three Gecko events and almost winning one, Tommy and I played our last event at La Quinta GC, designed by the Spanish golfing legend Manolo Pinero. Shooting an opening round of -6 which included his first professional tournament hole in one, Tommy O'Driscoll took the top spot and went into day 2 with a two shot lead. In very difficult conditions

and with the entire field snapping at his heels Tommy dug deep and managed to hang onto his top spot but missing his ten meter putt to win the tournament, unfortunately ended up tied first place with two other players, forcing us into our second victory play off in three events. A bad bounce saw tommy find a bunker in the third play-off hole and unfortunately missing his

putt we had to concede the victory to Scotland’s Frazer Moore. With the assistance from Mark and Nick from the Players academy and my support from the local clubs, in only one month three rain soaked Irish boys warmed up in the Andalusian sun and started competing for victories. That is why I love what I do. Make my players play the best golf they can. I can’t

wait to help many more young golfers on their journey into the big wide world of professional golf and I wish all my players out there the very best for their upcoming season. For the month of February I will be working with an upcoming Swedish golfing phenomenon Jesper Jurell on his quest for a maiden professional victory. Keep On grinding everyone.

Éxito del IV Torneo Internacional De Esgrima organizado por el Club Internacional “AndaluZía” en el Castillo de la Duquesa El Club Internacional de Esgrima “AndaluZía” junto con la Asociación Gerónimo Sánchez de Carranza y el Ayuntamiento de Manilva, Concejalía de Deportes y Cultura organizaron el pasado fin de semana el VII torneo de esgrima del circuito Carranza y IV Torneo Internacional Villa de Manilva. Más de 100 participantes de las principales provincias andaluzas tomaron parte en categorías de menores de 10, 12, 15 años y preveteranos. La competición de esgrima deportiva se desarrolló a lo largo de la mañana. En la tarde tuvo lugar la exhibición-competición de esgrima histórica, una modalidad de esgrima que rememora los antiguos duelos. Recoge los conocimientos, técnicas, historia, vestimenta y armas del los siglos XV al XVII. Son asaltos muy vistosos y dinámicos a un solo tocado similar a los desafíos de antaño. Pone de manifiesto toda la tradición de la esgrima española que se realizaba en castillos

como el nuestro y a la vez un espectáculo muy interesante. Los muros y estancias de este monumento se poblaron de niños y mayores que disfrutaron no solo de una bonita jornada deportiva sino de una demostración de esgrima escénica a cargo de los estudiantes de la Escuela Superior de Artes Escénicas de Málaga y la competición de minizorros con la participación de los más pequeños. En la sala de exposiciones del Castillo se presentó el trabajo “Tiempos de Esgrima”, fotografías artísticas de esgrima deportiva y escénica realizadas por los prestigiosos fotógrafos Arturo Umbría, José Mari Moya y José Luis Bollar. Las diferentes actividades animaron al público y a los tiradores que midieron sus armas en las estancias del Castillo que ha sido remodelado recientemente. Los jóvenes tiradores del Club “AndaluZía” se alzaron con los principales galardones destacando la victoria de Joanna Kustra en categoría

de preveteranas y Jan Bade en categoría masculina, con un meritorio segundo puesto para María Maldonado y Paul Holder. En categoría de menores de 15 años Efraim Carrión consiguió una trabajada medalla de plata en un asalto de final que se recordará por el desarrollo de una depurada técnica y motivación. Amelia Deardon consiguió una

nueva medalla esta vez de bronce en unos asaltos muy ajustados en el marcador. Consiguieron su condecoración Marina, Freddy, Billy, Lucien, Cristina, Zulema, Nicolás, David, Jonas, Shaine, Leo,Yago, Amir, Jasmine, Fran, Josef, Christian, Irene, Jake, Shasha, Oliver, Catherine, Amelia, Marta, Daniel, Carla, Manuel, Iván, Daniela, Declan, Laird, Adryan

y Juanjo. También participaron y ayudaron a organizar el torneo Phil, Miguel y Noelia, sin los cuales habría sido imposible la organización del mismo. The IV International Fencing Tournament organized by the International "AndaluZía" Fencing Club in the castle in Castillo de la Duquesa proves a big success The International Fencing Club "AndaluZia" along with the Geronimo Sanchez de Carranza Association and the Manilva Department of Sports and Culture, organized last weekend the VII Carranza circuit fencing tournament and IV International Tournament of Manilva at which 100 participants from the main Andalucian provinces took part in the children’s categories under 10, 12, 15 and preveterans.

The competition developed throughout the morning while in the afternoon took there was an exhibition and tournament of historical fencing, a fencing mode that harks back to duels of old. It combines the knowledge, techniques, history, dress and weapons of the XV to XVII centuries. They are very showy and dynamic fights similar to the challenges of yesteryear. It reveals the whole tradition of Spanish

fencing that took place in castles like ours and at the same time makes for a very interesting show. The walls and rooms of this monument were full of children and adults who enjoyed not only a beautiful day of sports but also a demonstration of theatrical fencing by the students of the School of Performing Arts in Malaga and the competition of mini zorros for the youngest fighters. In the exhibition hall of the Castle visitors could view "Tiempos de Esgrima", and exhibition of artistic photographs of sports and stage fencing taken by the prestigious photographers Arturo Umbría, José Mari Moya and José Luis Bollar. The various activities entertained the public while the fencers measured their weapons in the rooms of the Castle that has recently been remodeled. The young fencers of the Club "AndaluZía" dominated the main awards with special mention of the victory by Joanna Kustra in preveteran and Jan Bade in the men’s category, with a worthy second place for Maria Maldonado and Paul Holder. In the under-15 category Efraim

Carrión was awarded a silver medal in a final round that will be remembered for the development of a refined technique and motivation. Amelia Deardon got a bronze medal this time in a very tight assault on the scoreboard. Also placed were Marina, Freddy, Billy, Lucien, Cristina, Zulema, Nicolas, David, Jonas, Shaine, Leo, Yago, Amir, Jasmine, Fran, Josef, Christian, Irene, Jake, Shasha, Oliver, Catherine, Amelia, Marta , Daniel, Carla, Manuel, Ivan,

Daniela, Declan, Laird, Adryan and Juanjo. As well as participating, Phil, Miguel and Noelia also helped with the running of the event, and without their help it would have been impossible to organize such a successful event.
