EDITORIAL Welcome to the November issue of The Resident. This is always a strange time of year, during November we are finally saying goodbye to the summer, with the rainy days slowly coming closer together. We are also beginning to gear up for the next big event - Christmas.

One of the things I love about Spain is that, unlike Britain where Christmas begins in September and by the time December 25th rolls in most people are heartily sick of the word, Christmas only really begins to get going in December. It will be very interesting to see what happens this year, I expect things can go either of two ways: people will be very cautious and keep spending to a minimum, staying in and enjoying a budget Christmas; or there could be a sod it, let’s enjoy ourselves and damn the consequences, live now, pay later attitude! I know which most local businesses are hoping for.

Once again the Over 50s show is rolling into town, when Estepona’s Palacio de Congresos plays host to this event, aimed at the Costa del Sol’s more senior residents. There is a host of exhibitors and activities, and whilst pitched at the older resident, is of interest to everyone. Eric Knowles from the popular UK TV series ‘Antiques Roadshow’ will be on hand to value those hidden treasures. The Over 50s Show takes place on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th November.

At the end of last month the eyes of the golfing world were turned towards San Roque, when Valderrama hosted the first Andalucia Masters tournament. With some of the world’s top golfers competing for a €3 million prize fund, Northern Ireland’s Graeme ‘G Mac’ McDowell triumphed. Getting back to Christmas, don’t forget now is the time to buy your ticket for the Christmas Lottery. You can pick them up at your local lottery shop, but you can also buy them from bars, restaurants, shops, clubs, associations, etc. many of whom are selling ‘decimos’ (tenths) or participaciones (smaller shares) in the 200 euro tickets. Although the draw takes place on the 22nd December tickets are only on sale until 10th December, so make sure you don’t miss out on your share of this year’s €2.3 billion prize fund which includes 195 top prizes of €3 million each.

Bienvenidos a la edición de Noviembre del periódico The Resident.

Este siempre es un momento extraño en el año ya que durante el mes de Noviembre finalmente le vamos diciendo adiós al verano, con la llegada de los días de lluvia. También nos estamos preparando para el gran evento que es la navidad.

Una de las cosas que adoro de España es que, mientras que en Gran Bretaña las Navidades empiezan en el mes de Septiembre y por el 25 de Diciembre la mayoría de las personas ya están cansadas de la palabra “Navidad”, realmente la Navidad empieza en Diciembre. Será interesante ver que pasa este año, espero que las cosas vayan de cualquiera de estas dos maneras: que las personas tengan precaución y gasten lo necesario, permaneciendo en casa y disfrutando del presupuesto navideño; o que digan: “vivamos al día y ya veremos el futuro”, divirtiéndose y no prestando mucha atención a las consecuencias, como se dice en inglés: “Vive ahora y paga más tarde” Sé lo que la mayoría de los negocios locales esperamos.

Una vez más tenemos el espectáculo de los más de 50 en el Palacio de Congresos de Estepona, organizado por los residentes mayores de la Costa del Sol. Habrá exhibiciones y actividades, y a pesar de que está dedicado para residentes mayores, es interesante para todo el mundo y de todas las edades. Eric Knowles de la popular serie inglesa televisiva “Antiques Roadshow” estará presente para valorar aquellos tesoros que la gente tenga escondidos. El evento tendrá lugar el sábado 27 y el domingo 28 de Noviembre.

A final del mes pasado todos los ojos se concentraron en San Roque, campo de golf Valderrama, con el campeonato mundial de golf y con algunos de los mejores jugadores de golf compitiendo por un premio de 3 millones de euros, triunfando Graeme ‘G Mac’ McDowell.

San Roque

Un grupo de 40 miembros de la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas inicia una visita al Parlamento Europeo Un grupo de 33 alumnos y siete profesores de la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de San Roque ha partido hoy, miércoles, de viaje para visitar el Parlamento Europeo, en Bruselas, así como otras ciudades, gracias a una subvención concedida por la citada institución comunitaria. El teniente de alcalde delegado de Educación, Ramón Ramírez, acudió a la Alameda para despedirles antes de tomar el autobús que les llevará al aeropuerto de Málaga, donde volverán el domingo.

Ramírez felicitó “a los alumnos y a la dirección del centro por haber tenido la suerte de obtener estas becas, porque van a visitar no sólo el Parlamento Europeo, sino también ciudades maravillosas: Luxemburgo, Maastrich, Gante, Brujas, Aquisgrán... De haberlo sabido antes, me habría apuntado -bromeó-. Espero que el viaje sea muy provechoso y quiero dar la enhorabuena a la Escuela Oficial de Idiomas por las gestiones que lo han hecho posible”.

Por su parte, la directora del centro, Marián Díaz, agradeció “al Parlamento Europeo que haya concedido la subvención que va

a favorecer la realización de esta visita. Se nos ha concedido después de tres años de insistencia por parte del centro, porque según los criterios de estas ayudas tienen prioridad los grupos procedentes de partidos políticos y de asociaciones de prensa, de manera que eso hace más meritorio el que se nos haya otorgado”.

Explicó que “entre los alumnos hay miembros de muy diversos colectivos profesionales, y también proceden de todos los municipios del Campo de Gibraltar.

También es variada la edad, porque la alumna más joven tiene 15 años y la más veterana 79. El nexo común es la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de idiomas, un tema que interesa al Parlamento Europeo porque cada año el 26 de septiembre celebran el Día Europeo de las Lenguas”.

“Para nosotros -finalizó- resultará muy interesante ver ‘in situ’ cómo trabajan y se comunican en 22 idiomas. Para nuestros alumnos y para los enseñantes de idiomas, el Parlamento Europeo es un ejemplo de multilingüismo”.

Melero pide a Diputación el arreglo urgente de la CA-9203

El teniente de alcalde delegado de Transporte, Manuel Melero, ha denunciado la dejadez de la Diputación Provincial de Cádiz en la reparación de los tramos de la carrera que conduce al Pinar del Rey, la CA-9203, que resultaron dañados por las inundaciones del pasado invierno.

Group from San Roque Official Language School visits European Parliament A group of 33 students and 7 teachers from the Official Language School in San Roque set off this week on a visit to the European Parliament in Brussels, along with other cities. The trip has been subsidised by an EU grant.

The Education councillor, Ramón Ramírez, commended the students and staff for having been given this opportunity, not only to visit the EU Parliament but also the cities of Luxembourg, Maastricht, Ghent, Brugge and Aachen.

The School’s director, Marián Díaz, pointed

out that this trip is the result of three years correspondence with the EU, and that among the group were members from various municipalities in the Campo de Gibraltar, and from various professions. There is also a wide range of ages with the youngest student being 15 and eldest 79. But the common link across the whole party is the teaching and learning of languages.

The group will see at first hand how the European Parliament manages the task of working and communicating in 22 different languages.

San Roque’s transport councillor has denounced the Cadiz provincial authorities for their failure to repair certain sections of the CA-9203 Pinar del Rey road damaged by floods last winter.

It is almost a year since Melero sent a letter to Francisco González Cabaña, president of the provincial government, requesting urgent repairs to this and other roads in the municipality damaged during last year’s dreadful winter.

Melero has criticised “the total neglect by the provincial council” which despite repeated requests has failed to complete these repairs before winter returns.

Taller de Latas del Secadero La Tenencia de Alcaldía del Secadero ha abierto el plazo para inscribirse en el taller de Latas, donde se realizarán los juguetes que pasearán los niños en el arrastre de latas de la víspera de Reyes, el próximo 5 de enero.

El precio del taller será de 5 euros por niños. Los interesados pueden inscribirse en la Tenencia de Alcaldía del Secadero.

Además se ha convocado una reunión a todos los interesados en participar que tendrá lugar el 26 de noviembre a las 18.30 en el salón de actos de la Tenencia.

HOW TO VOTE

Secadero tin can workshop The local authorities in Secadero are inviting enrolment to their Tin can Workshop, where children can make toys for the traditional ‘arrastre de latas’ (literally translated as tin can drag) which takes place on 5 January.

In this traditional event children tie together long strings of cans, many in the shape of animals, cars, etc., and drag

them through the steets making as much noise as possible to let the Three Kings know that they are there and ready for their presents.

The workshop costs 5 euros per child, and those interested should attend the meeting at the Tenencia de Alcaldia in Secadero at 6.30 pm on 26 November.

You have chosen to live in Casares, one of the most beautiful areas on the Costa del Sol. But things can always be improved, and the only way to do this is if you are registered in the municipality. We therefore strongly recommend your participation to improve services in Casares. Many of the provincial, regional, state and EU subsidies, are proportional to the number of people on the local register (Padron).

According to the law, anyone living in the municipality, whether Spanish or foreign, must register with the local town hall. All data is confidential and protected under the Data Protection Act. Registering does not mean paying more tax.

Registration gives you the following rights and benefits: • You have the right to vote in the local elections to be held in May 2011. When registering on the Padron, you must also explicitly express your intention to vote by completing a separate form.

• FOREIGN CITIZENS MUST REGISTER BEFORE DECEMBER 31, 2010, to vote.

Those citizens who have been registered before but have never voted, must go to Town Hall and fill out the form, expressing their desire to vote. Those citizens who voted in past elections need not re-enroll.

Friends and Neighbours of Marina Casares PP Casares open their Marina Casares office Unfortunately due to the refurbishment of the offices at Casares Costa, the Friends and Neighbours of Marina de Casares Association have had to leave their club room.

This is a bad news good news story though, as the Casares Town Hall have promised them a new facility within the proposed refurbishment and have also furnished them with temporary accommodation in the commercial premises at the Casares del Sol urbanisation. This enables the club to continues with its language, painting,

theatre and dancing classes, provided free to members.

Many of the in-house events and tournaments have been put on hold until the New Year, when the club will bounce back with some more and varied activities in the new environment.

The picnic outings and lunch programme still continues, and planning for the gala Christmas Lunch is well under way.

Un pulmón verde para Manilva Obras están progresando en dos nuevas zonas verdes que añadirá otros 37.000 metros cuadrados de zona de ocio a la infraestructura local.

Se trata de una marcha en la que podrá participar toda la familia. La salida tendrá lugar desde la Plaza del Cali a partir de las diez y media de la mañana, cuando se inicien los ejercicios de calentamiento, para comenzar el recorrido a partir de las 11 de la mañana hasta llegar al Castillo, desde

donde se regresará al lugar de partida.

Al final del recorrido se podrá disfrutar de tapas y bebidas, amenizado con música en la Taberna del Genal.

La organización pide a los participantes que lleven una camiseta roja durante el desarrollo de la actividad.

Viaje a Granada El Pasado 29 de Octubre, un nutrido grupo de residentes extranjeros pudieron disfrutar del viaje organizado por la delegación que dirije Diego Urieta, a Granada con el objetivo, además de conocer un poco más la ciudad, contemplar los monumentos más representativos, como es la Alhambra y el Generalife.

La expedición disfrutó de un día agradable, con una temperatura ideal y en un marco tan incomparable como los señalados, ya que son la admiración del mundo entero por su belleza histórica.

Tanto la alcaldesa, Antonia Muñoz Vázquez como el edil de Extranjeros, Diego Urieta, quisieron sumarse a este viaje y departir y acompañar a los vecinos en este recorrido por la historia más ancestral de Granada.

A la vuelta, los beneficiados agradecieron a los responsables municipales el interés mostrado para con ellos y la buena elección de una ciudad que no deja de sorprender por su belleza y atractivo turístico.

Fiesta de Halloween Una de las tantas actividades programadas por la delegación de Extranjeros fue la fiesta de Halloween, que se celebró el pasado domingo 31 de octubre, en el Pub Rojo del Puerto de la Duquesa.

Tal y como explicó el responsable de esta delegación, Diego Urieta, se sorteó un viaje entre los asistentes, para dos personas durante un fin de semana en un hotel en Andalucía.

Los británicos Sharon y Joe McGowan fueron los ganadores de este viaje de fin de semana para dos personas.

Otras actividades La Delegación de Extranjeros, que dirige Diego Urieta continúa trabajando en la integración de este colectivo en la vida del municipio, y lo hace mediante la organización de numerosas actividades.

En concreto el pasado Viernes día 12 de Noviembre, comenzaron las clases de pintura dirigidas a los más pequeños de la casa. Estas se llevarán a cabo en Villa Matilde en horario de 16.30 hrs a 18.00 hrs de la tarde, siendo las mismas completamente gratuitas, por lo que los alumnos deberán aportar el material necesario para el desarrollo

de las mismas. Los menores deberán ir acompañados por un adulto.

Así mismo todos los Sábados desde las 10.30 hrs a 12.00 hrs de la mañana tendrá lugar un encuentro con familias españolas y extranjeras en Villa Matilde, en el que se pretende fomentar la integración y el conocimiento de las diferentes culturas participantes, mediante el desarrollo de diversas actividades encaminadas a compartir experiencias que ayuden a resolver problemas cotidianos. Esta iniciativa pretende prolongarse en el tiempo.

Viaje a Lucena y Rute La Delegación de Extranjeros Residentes, organiza un viaje a Lucena y Rute el próximo día 3 de Diciembre.

Lucena está ubicada al sur de la provincia de Córdoba, en plena comarca Subbética, en medio de una rica campiña de olivos y viñas, la ciudad de Lucena se presenta al visitante como una ciudad dinámica que atesora un rico patrimonio histórico artístico, herencia de un importante pasado judío, árabe y cristiano que la hicieron un prospero enclave conocido como ciudad de las tres culturas.

Rute es conocido por su afamado anisado, aguardientes y licores artesanales, así como por la fabricación de dulces navideños,

mantecados, hojaldres y piononos.

Cabe destacar el Museo del Turrón de productos Garrido , donde podrán visitar una exposición con los útiles y procesos de antaño, la planta de producción e incluso una degustación.

El precio por persona es de 30€, que incluye autocar ida y vuelta, desayuno en ruta, almuerzo y visitas.

La hora de salida será las 7:30 horas desde el Castillo y las 7:45 horas desde Sabinillas.

La hora de regreso será las 18:00 horas aprox.

Halloween Party The Foreigners department celebrated Halloween this year hosting a party at Pub Rojo in Puerto de la Duquesa. As part of the celebrations Diego Urieta arranged a

prize draw with a first prize of a weekend for two in a hotel in Andalucia. This prize went to the British couple, Sharon and Joe McGowan.

Last month a group of local foreign residents enjoyed a trip to Granada organised by the Foreign Residents Department, directed by councillor Diego Urieta. Along with visits to the Alhambra and the Generalife Gardens, visitors were also able to enjoy the sights

and sounds of this beautiful city.

The group were joined by both the Mayoress, Antonia Muñoz, Councillor Urieta and other members of the team who enjoyed this opportunity to socialise with the residents.

Stepping Out for Cancer

The Foreign Residents Department, headed by Diego Urieta, continues with its aim to encourage integration with the community through its programme of events and activities.

Among these activities are children’s painting classes which began on 12 November and will be held on Friday afternoons from 4.30 to 6 pm in the Villa Matilde in Sabinillas. The classes are free but you must provide your own materials and children must be accompanied by an

adult.

On Saturdays from 10.30 am to 12 noon there will be an opportunity for Spanish and foreign families to meet up and socialise. The aim is promote integration and understanding of the different cultures, and to share experiences and help solve day-to-day problems.

Both of these activities are held at the Villa Matilde, just in front of the Supersol on the Sabinillas to Manilva road.

Replanteo del tramo del paseo marítimo Ya se ha llevado a cabo la firma del acta de replanteo del tramo del paseo marítimo que unirá el Puerto de la Duquesa con El Castillo.

El coste estimado será de 745.000 euros, con un plazo aproximado de ejecución de 6 meses, por lo que sobre marzo o abril estará finalizada.

Por su parte, el edil de Obras dio importancia al material seleccionado para realizar esta obra, que será todo muy acorde con el cuidado al medio ambiente, con farolas solares cuyo gasto energético será nulo y todo el material mobiliario necesario para hacer del entorno un lugar idílico

The project, which has been approved by the Mancomunidad, has an estimated cost of 745,000 euros and will take six months to carry

out, with a proposed completion date of March or April next year.

Conditions were perfect for the event and the 88 golfers enjoyed the friendly competition.

The day finished up at Mojos in Duquesa Port with the prizegiving and entertainment.

Medio ambiente aboga por el ahorro y el cuidado del entorno Por parte del Área de Medio Ambiente se ha puesto en marcha una iniciativa para reducir el consumo de alumbrado público en la localidad.

La experiencia piloto se ha llevado a cabo en la barriada Pozo del Rey. Unas nuevas lámparas compactas fluorescentes de 85w

han sustituido a las antiguas lámparas de vapor de sodio que requerían un sistema electrónico más complejo, contaminante y caro.

La iniciativa supondrá un ahorro del 50% en la facturación de alumbrado público, además de una considerable reducción de emisiones de CO2.

Energy efficient street lights for Manilva Manilva’s environment department have introduced an initiative designed to reduce energy consumption by the municipality’s street lights.

In a pilot scheme carried out in the Poza del Rey area the old sodium vapour street

lights were replaced with new 85w compact fluorescent lamps, which have a lower electricity usage as well as being less polluting and cheaper. The new system will cut Manilva’s lighting bill by 50%.

Habilitada una nueva sala en el Castillo para la práctica de deportes

Ya se puede visitar de martes a domingo por la tarde la Casa de la Juventud

El Ayuntamiento de Manilva ha habilitado una nueva sala en el núcleo del Castillo de la Duquesa para la práctica de distintas modalidades deportivas, entre ellas pilates.

De esta manera, según el concejal de Deportes Diego Urieta, cada núcleo de población cuenta con sus respectivas instalaciones para la práctica del deporte en el término.

Concretamente, la sala habilitada junto a la Iglesia en el Castillo, da cobertura tanto a los residentes en este enclave, como de las urbanizaciones cercanas.

Desde el pasado martes 2 de noviembre se encuentra abierta la casa de la juventud de Manilva, después de que estuviese cerrada durante los meses de verano.

Estas instalaciones pueden visitarse de martes a domingo, desde las cinco de la tarde a las nueve de la noche. En ellas, los usuarios pueden disfrutar de mesas de billar, futbolines y de una pantalla gigante, entre otras ofertas de ocio.

Cultura mejora las bibliotecas municipales La Delegación de Cultura, ha conseguido una subvención por parte de la Junta de Andalucía para mejorar las bibliotecas municipales.

Una subvención por un importe total de 12.000 € que servirá para la nueva ampliación de la biblioteca de Sabinillas ya que contaba con un espacio insuficiente para el gran número de usuarios del que dispone sobre todo en fechas estivales.

También, dentro de esta cantidad subvencionada, se contará con nuevo material mobiliario en la biblioteca de Manilva así como de un equipo multimedia que consta de una Televisión, un Reproductor de DVD y un Proyector.

Esta Delegación también está trabajando en la mejora de la biblioteca de El Castillo, renovando su instalación eléctrica y material mobiliario.

Library improvements Manilva’s libraries have received grants totalling 12,000 euros for improvements to the municipality’s libraries. Works include enlargement of the library in Sabinillas, which has insufficient room for the large number of users, particularly during the summer months.

There is also funding for new materials and furnishings for the library in Manilva including computer, TV, DVD player and a projector.

Improvements are also planned for the library in Castillo.

Urbanismo tramita un plan de carril bici y senda peatonal El plan especial de carril bici y senda peatonal para el término municipal de Manilva, fue presentado ayer martes en el consejo de la gerencia de urbanismo celebrado en las dependencias municipales de la concejalía de Urbanismo del ayuntamiento, ubicadas en la plaza de Orfeo.

Los presentes en dicho consejo revisaron esta iniciativa y decidieron remitirla a la Alcaldía para su aprobación inicial.

Con este proyecto, según el departamento dirigido por Salvador Zotano, se pretende facilitar el acceso a pie, y en

bicicleta, a distintas urbanizaciones del término que discurren paralelas a la autovía A-7.

Asimismo, conectará las zonas verdes dispersas, y situadas junto a la carretera.

Este plan especial, que consiste en la creación de un carril para bicicletas y otro paralelo destinado al tránsito de peatones, se desarrollará en el tramo comprendido entre la Colada “Camino del Duque”, más conocido como Camino de Los Baños de la Hedionda, y la Urbanización La Paloma.

Cine Forum y Tertulia Literaria Desde la delegación de Educación y Cultura se informa que la primera sesión del cine-forum estará basada en \”Tú película favorita\”, será en la biblioteca de Manilva el próximo jueves 25 de Noviembre a partir de las 20 horas. Como será costumbre este ciclo se celebrará el último jueves de cada

mes.

También anuncia el edil, Diego José Jiménez, que el segundo libro de las tertulias literarias será \”Historias de Babilú\” de la escritora Inmaculada García Haro y está a la venta, en la Delegación de Cultura, a un precio de 10 €.

Film Forum and Literary Discussion Manilva’s culture department presents the first session of the newly formed cine forum on the theme ‘Your favourite film’ which will be held in the library in Manilva on 25 November from 8 pm. This will be a regular event to be

held on the last Thursday of every month.

There will also be a second literary discussion, featuring “Historias de Babilú by the author Inmaculada García Haro, which will be available to purchase at a price of €10.

Plans put forward for cycle paths This week Manilva’s planning department has presented to Manilva’s planning advisory department a proposed plan for a network of cyclepaths and footpaths. It was agreed that the proposal should be passed on to the town council for approval.

The project would provide cycle and pedestrian connections between various

parts of the municipality and would run parallel to the A7 toll road. It would also connect a number of Manilva’s green areas.

The scheme would create a route from the Camino del Duque, also known as the Camino de Los Baños de la Hedionda and Urbanisation La Paloma.

El Ayuntamiento adjudica el soterramiento de la línea de alta tensión entre La Lobilla y el Polígono El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha adjudicado a la empresa Aditel Auxiliar de la Distribución Eléctrica, S.A., por procedimiento abierto y tramitación urgente, las obras de soterramiento de un tramo de línea eléctrica de alta tensión, 66 KV, S/C, denominada ParaísoEstepona, entre los apoyos números 69 y 72 del término municipal que discurre entre La Lobilla y la entrada al Polígono Industrial.

El proyecto supondrá una inversión de 769.996,79 € más 138.599,42 € de IVA, además de unas mejoras ofertadas por la empresa adjudicataria valoradas en 70.800,00 €, lo que supone un precio total de 979.396,21 € con cargo al Fondo Estatal de Inversión Local para la Dinamización del Empleo y la Sostenibilidad Local 2010.

En total, en la zona señalada hay cuatro torres de alta tensión. Según explicó el alcalde, David Valadez, con la eliminación de las torres de electricidad se da respuesta a una petición que los vecinos de la zona de Mar y Sierra, Altos de Estepona y calle Terraza, venían demandado desde hace años, y supondrá, además, la mejora de la circulación y la red viaria de toda la zona, ya que algunas estructuras están situadas en plena calzada, con excesiva proximidad a zonas habitables, tanto de sus apoyos como de sus conductores.

Por su parte, el edil Eduardo Alarcón ha manifestado que las obras consistirán en la eliminación del cableado aéreo, sustituyéndolo por otro equivalente subterráneo. Para ello, previamente será necesaria la ejecución de una canalización específica que discurrirá por la zona norte del municipio, ocupando un ámbito que irá de forma simultánea, en un primer tramo, desde la zona próxima a la carretera de Genalguacil hasta el CEIP Santo Tomás, y, en un segundo tramo, desde el centro escolar hasta las proximidades de la Avda.

High voltage power lines in Estepona to go underground The local authorities in Estepona have awarded the company Aditel Auxiliar de la Distribución Eléctrica, S.A the contract to carry out, as soon as possible, the works to transfer the high voltage power lines between La Lobilla and the entrance to the Industrial Park from their current pylons to underground conduits.

The project will cost just under €1 million euros most of which comes from the State Fund for Local Investment and Employment, the so-called Plan Zapatero.

The scheme will see the removal of four electricity pylons which have been the subject of a campaign by residents of the local Mar y Sierra, Altos de Estepona and

Calle Terraza residential areas who have for years demanded their removal due to their close proximity to their homes.

This is part of a general scheme to replace all above ground cabling with an underground utility infrastructure.

Estepona’s Sports and Youth Department has published its programme of guided walks for this autumn, designated “Caminos de Estepona”.

The forthcoming programme of routes is as follows: Sunday, 11th December Barrio del Cobre (Algeciras) - Río la Miel.

Distance: 12 km (4-5 hrs), classification moderate.

Registration on the for each hike is open up to 8.00 pm on the Thursday before each trip and can be made at the Deportes or Juventud offices, and cost 6 euros per person.

Children under 14 must be authorised by their parents and be accompanied by an adult.

Participants should be sufficiently physically fit for the distance or level of difficulty of the particular hike.

Hikers should be dressed in appropriate clothing for the terrain and weather conditions, and be equipped with headwear, sunglasses, suncream in the summer and wet weather gear if necessary. Don’t forget your camera and binoculars.

The charge of 6 euros covers accident insurance, etc.

All hikes leave from the Campo de Fútbol San Fernando (San Fernando football ground) at 8.00 am.

Visita Guiada “COROMINAS CON MÚSICA”

Centro de Interpretación Dolménica de Corominas Domingo, 21 noviembre, 19:30 h. Música de Juan Gamero Tras el éxito del primer Concierto, la Delegación de Cultura del Ayuntamiento de Estepona, junto a la Asociación ACUDE de Estepona, han programado una nueva actuación de Guitarra dentro del Ciclo de Conciertos en la Necrópolis Dolménica de Corominas situada en el Parque de los Pedregales.

Exposición de pinturas de Miguel López Salas La Delegación de Cultura de Estepona ha programado una Exposición de Pinturas del artista Miguel López Salas, que permanecerá abierta en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel del 23 de noviembre al 3 de diciembre de 2010.

Esta exposición es una retrospectiva que recorre parte de la producción artística de

Miguel López Salas desde los años 80 hasta nuestros días. En ella podemos encontrar pintorescos paisajes, tanto urbanos, como rústicos o marinos, también vistosos bodegones y algún que otro retrato. Y sobre todo, mucha arquitectura popular y pintura en piel.

Estepona’s Cultural department presents an exhibition of the paintings of the artist Miguel López Salas which runs from 23 November to 3 December at Estepona’s Padre Manuel Cultural Centre.

The exhibition is a retrospective of the artist’s work from the 80s to today in which we encounter picturesque landscapes - urban, rural or marine - along with the occasional still life and portrait.

Saturday, 20 November, 7.30 pm In the year of the bicentenary of the birth of Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), Estepona’s Culture department has organised a concert in honour of this musical genius on Saturday, 20 November, from 7.30 pm at the town’s Padre Manuel Cultural Centre featuring pianist Joaquin Castellano.

Over 50s Show returns to Estepona for fourth year running Estepona foxtrot and quickstep.

Usually it starts with lessons for beginners, which is generally followed by another shorter lesson for the more advanced. After the lesson the rest of the evening is left for you to enjoy practising all you have learned to great music played in a party atmosphere.

The lessons throughout the show will be led by Brian Ross who is a qualified dance teacher of many years experience.

The ever popular event always attracts a huge amount of visitors Now in its fourth year, The Over 50s Show, the lifestyle event for the Coast’s seniors continues to add new features to maximise visitor numbers.

At this year’s event, taking place at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos on the weekend of Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th November, most of the proven attractions – such as health tests, antique valuations, finance advice, and golf lessons – will be supplemented by ballroom dancing lessons, keep-fit demonstrations, nutritional advice, forties-style entertainment and ‘The IKEA Relaxation Zone’

Nutrition and exercise The show welcomes back well-known health, fitness and nutrition trainers and advisers, JoJo France and Claudio Norris will occupy a sizeable area of the event regular demonstrations.

At the show, as in previous events , there would be free blood pressure checks JoJo and Claudio will be leading a team of around six people. One of these ladies (Claudia Norris) is a nutritionist, she will be giving free nutritional advice on food to maintain a healthy blood pressure.

Eric Knowles antique evaluations One of the proven attractions and favourites of the event, antique expert Eric Knowles, will be offering free valuations of small antiques and collectibles, as well advising on bigger items from photos. Eric, known to millions for his appearances on The Antiques Roadshow, and more recently Antiques Restoration and The Great Antiques Challenge, will be appearing on the Bonhams Auctioneers stand.

Dancing lessons with LeRoc Modern Jive Another new feature will be free ballroom dancing lessons employing the Le Roc method which is a simplified mixture of Salsa, Jive and Cha Cha which is danced with a partner to virtually any music. It also takes in the standard ballroom steps such as

Floral Art Club Estepona Floral Art Club is delighted to be welcoming Alan Beatty, NAFAS National Demonstrator from Clogher, N. Ireland, on Tuesday, December 7th 2010.

15th La Almuña Christmas Fair This year celebrates the 15th annual La Almuña Christmas Fair. A long established event held at La Almuña located just outside Gaucin on the road to San Pablo, 1st left after kilometre 6.

Traditionally held on the last weekend in November, Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th, from 12 midday to 6pm.

Mavis - Surviving Five Primary Cancers in Andalucia Despite surviving five primary cancers, Mavis Schmid never calls herself a sick person. ‘I’m just someone who has been sick,” she says.

A person nevertheless who is managing her own life. In her book ‘Living Proof – Surviving Five Primary Cancers’, Mavis takes us to the darkest corners of her soul. But she says, ‘As I hope my cover picture shows, I bring you back to sunshine in the mountains near Casares.’

At 69, five different types of tumour have not managed to destroy Mavis’s life and perhaps uniquely, all her operations were carried out without follow-up chemo or radiotherapy. Her new book Living Proof shows both sides of her survival against all odds. Her own inner struggle together with the inside story from the point of view of the eminent surgeons and professors. We read their surgical notes and explanatory texts on the medical story and procedures. Living Proof portrays a terrifying yet inspirational story with few if any parallels.

Costa Advice Bureau Land Grab Property boundaries have long been the subject of bitter disputes between neighbours and frequently amongst family members. Difficulties also arise from the fact that many small parcels of land have been segregated from the finca matriz (Original estate), agreements were often made between owners using trees and stones as landmarks, as land values were low the majority of owners decided to avoid the expense of having plans drawn up of their individual plots. The result of these practices means that the local catastral plans are not necessarily correct. To add to the confusion often the title deeds were written up declaring less metres to evade taxes. These measures were accepted in the days when land in Spain had a minimal value. Once the prices began to increase reflected by the real estate boom, proprietors started fencing in what they considered to be their plots, knowingly or not taking a fair proportion of the neighbouring land. This was more common if the affected owners were not permanent residents. All title-holders of villas or plots should have a legal plan drawn up and fence in their property.

El Quiosco de Manolo A Manuel Luna Mi corazón, que sea el núcleo del río, para beber de él la fantasía, la armonía del amor en esos encuentros de la juventud donde las anécdotas ocurrían en épocas pasadas y todos bailábamos al son de una misma música, aunque a muchos no les gustara esa melodía.

Manolo, junto a la fuente vieja de la plaza, entraba en nuestras conversaciones. A nosotros, los jóvenes, nos parecía de nuestra edad, que aunque no era un viejo, si era mayor que nosotros, y mis amigos y yo, jugando y hablando con él, pasábamos juntos muchas tardes.

En la infancia, teníamos los domingos para paladear el helado, si conseguíamos que nuestros padres nos dieran el suficiente dinero y, entusiasmados, creíamos que algún día lograríamos ser los hombres corpulentos y vitales que seducirían a las mujeres más bellas.

Manolo era el hombre del quiosco, temperamental, lugarteniente de escolares que marchaba con su canasta y vendía por los alrededores del colegio chucherías: el chupachups, el chicle, las pipas… Hombre vivaz y bromista, rociador de petardos en verbenas.

Alentador, entusiasta y jugador de póker los domingos por la tarde, cuando nos reuníamos en su tienda, cada vez más grande, que dejó de ser quiosco para convertirse en suvenir. Pero es la niñez y su quiosco lo que más llega a la memoria, ese doblar la esquina y verlo allí cortando los helados, el cuchillo brillante, cinco duros para el helado grande y de tres sabores, y el que más me gusta a mí el de vainilla.

También Manolo le confío al mar sus noches, sus inviernos y sus soledades, detuvo el miedo ante las golondrinas que lo veían pasear con su perro, y el pueblo le sonreía, sabía que su familia estaba allí, que sus sobrinos y su hermana permanecían junto a él.

Manolo anduvo por orillas y navegó por mares, tenía voluntad de peregrino y llamó a las amantes de sus puertos imaginarios, cuando atracó en la dársena con su barco de lobo marino.

Manolo y mi niñez, Manolo y mi adolescencia, los helados y los polos de nieve, blancos de leche, amarillos de limón, el de naranja, dulce y amargo a la vez, y el polo de fresa, labios que se pintaban las niñas rozando el frío para ser señoritas cortejadas.

En la adolescencia, sin pasar nada, es donde pasa todo, quiero decir, un pueblo arranca a hervir cuando se precipita el joven a vivir las vivencias de sus ciudadanos, y Manolo, es uno de los que la memoria no dejará ausente, y como otros tantos, dejan su huella en el enlozado de las calles del pueblo.

Nosotros comenzábamos a vivir por aquellos años la democracia anhelada.

El pueblo debía aprender a seguir adelante con lo que marcaba la verdad y la justicia para el ascenso, para demostrar al mundo que éramos al fin

un pueblo libre… Manolo, sus risas, sus bromas. A mí me gastó más de una: una vez mi madre me había encargado ir a comprar, y Manolo me invitó a subir en su seat 600. Yo acepté porque con él iba un amigo mío, y cuando habíamos recorrido dos quilómetros hacia las afueras del pueblo, me hizo bajar y tuve que irme andando hasta mi casa, para colmo, ese día lloviznaba.

Cuando llegué, mi madre me preguntó si había ido a comprar a Estepona, que estaba a unos doce quilómetros de mi pueblo. Cómo tener en cuenta esas bromas de Manolo. A él también le gastaban muchas.

Tuve un sueño con él. Le prometí en su velatorio que escribiría algo sobre su vida, y como lo prometido es deuda, lo que debo hacer es escribir sobre la vida de mi pueblo, y Manolo es vida de mi pueblo.

Ese gato blanco con manchas amarillas y marrones, pulula silencioso y melancólico por las esquinas, también añora el juego en las tardes brillantes de verano, donde los niños esperaban en la puerta del quiosco alcanzar sus golosinas despachadas con vitalidad por Manolo. La energía de él, de todos los que han vivido y siguen viviendo, sencillez del hombre y su quebranto, gota de aliento en el asfalto, una reforma, una transformación, una mañana en la que pienso extender mis manos a cada calle, a cada ciudadano, para que recoja, si quiere, el anecdotario, o mejor, esta colección de versos extendidos en las calles de mi pueblo, de mi mundo.

Mi corazón, núcleo en el río, lleva al mar su relato, su poema, para beber de él la fantasía, la armonía del amor en esos encuentros de la juventud donde ocurrían anécdotas y todos bailábamos al son de una misma música, aunque a muchos no les gustara esa melodía. ¡Qué gran respeto nos teníamos!

“As we now are at the end of October, a review shows recent events have conspired against sterling, as did the market. The Bank of England’s Mervyn King said the next decade would be a SOBER one (Savings, Orderly Budgets and Equitable Rebalancing) in contrast to the previous NICE one (NonInflationary Consistent Expansion).

In calling for more savings he was at odds with his deputy, Charlie Bean, who said at the beginning of the month that monetary policy was aimed at encouraging consumers to spend, not save.

The governor set the tone for the chancellor’s spending review the following day. There was nothing wholly surprising in the statement; most of the important aspects had been leaked to the media in the ongoing effort to manage expectations. But that did not prevent investors becoming downbeat when the chancellor confirmed the loss of half a million public sector jobs and the purchase of two anti-aircraft carriers. There had also been bad news earlier in the day when the minutes of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting showed that one member had voted for another £50 billion of quantitative easing (QE).

UK statistical releases were

both sparse and unhelpful. The Confederation of British Industry said orders were down again in October. So were September’s mortgage approvals and retail sales.

As far as the euro was concerned, investors saw more of the same; a continuation of the status quo. All of which resulted in more fluctuation of sterling against the euro - the rate fell to a 7 month low on the 25 of October at €1.12 from a figure at the beginning of September of €1.21.

Recent news from The USA indicates a further $600 billion going in to prop up their economy and we know when the USA takes action very often the rest of the world follows, what impact this injection will have on exchange rates as yet we do not know.

Pensions, health & unemployment British Consulate Pension, Benefit & Healthcare Team Winter fuel allowance Winter is approaching and, for some, this will mean an increase in heating bills and renewed discussion on Winter Fuel Allowance (WFA).

Although the PBHT highlighted the issue of WFA this time last year, WFA is such an important topic for many residents here and, with the Government’s Spending Review recently published, we thought it only right to revisit the topic.

The first important point to make is that WFA is not linked to your pension, nor to any tax you pay in the UK. The second is that it is only exportable to Spain if you have previously been eligible to receive it in the UK. This means you must have moved to Spain on or after 5th January 1998 and have been resident in the UK during a qualifying week in September at age 60 or above or from this year attained age 60 by 5th July 2010.

Despite much speculation, under the Government’s recent Spending Review, there are no current changes to the rules on WFA. Should any changes be made in the future, we will be sure to update you.

If you believe you are eligible for WFA, contact the International Pension Centre on 0044 191 218 7777. If you are not eligible for the benefit but are in need of assistance, contact social services at your local town hall.

Invoicing at the Costa Del Sol Hospital in Malaga As part of a pilot project by the Spanish Government, the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella has begun to issue customers with invoices for the treatment received. These are known as ‘facturas sombras’ and are to show customers how much their treatment has cost the health service. If you do receive an invoice following treatment, please do not panic! Providing you are adequately registered for healthcare in Spain, the “factura sombra” is for information only – you do not have to do anything. If the project is deemed a success, more hospitals throughout Spain could soon follow suit.

Voting in Spanish elections Like you, we believe that registering to vote is important as it allows the voices of British nationals in Spain to be heard at a local level and is important in ensuring that local services take account of the needs of the British community. If you are resident in Spain and wish to vote in the Spanish municipal elections on 22nd May 2011, you must register to vote with your town hall before the end of the year. This means you must be registered on the padrón and have explicitly expressed a wish to vote in municipal elections by signing on the electoral roll

(censo electoral). Once registered, you do not need to re-register. * If you are not yet on the padrón, visit your town hall to get registered.

At the same time you can declare that you also wish to vote and get signed onto the electoral roll (Censo Electoral de Residentes Extranjeros) * If you are registered on the padrón but not registered to vote, you should soon receive a letter from the Electoral Census Office.

To confirm you wish to vote, sign the declaration and return it to the local office If you are not sure if you are registered to vote, or whether your address is up to date on the padrón, contact your local town hall. DFAS de la Frontera DFAS de la Frontera is a society of likeminded individuals who get together for lectures, special interest days, trips, and social events.

The lecture season runs from October till May. The regular monthly lectures are held at the San Roque Golf & Country Club on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 11am, and usually last between an hour and an hour and a half.

Vistors are welcome to come along to lectures; entrance for visitors is €12 and €10 for members of other NADFAS societies. Entry is free for

Tres medallas para el Club Internacional de Esgrima en la primera Copa de Andalucía de Esgrima Se ha celebrado la primera prueba Oficial del Calendario de Esgrima en Andalucía en Motril (Granada) en categoría de menores de 15 y menores de 17 años.

El Club Internacional de Esgrima de Estepona realizó una muy buena actuación obteniendo la tiradora Olatz Bilbao la medalla de plata de la competición perdiendo por un solo tocado 15 a 14 con la tiradora Naiara Moreno. La joven deportista de tan solo doce años y actual campeona de España de su categoría participó en la prueba de menores de 17 años con una nueva medalla y un meritorio tercer puesto, precedida de Belén Villarreal y Lucía Cáceres.

Buenos resultados también para Lauren Kettner en su primera participación en competición oficial y José Daniel Montero en categoría masculina finalizando 6º mostrándose muy competitivo en toda la prueba.

Estos primeros resultados auguran una buena temporada para el Club Internacional de Esgrima de Estepona cuyos objetivos están puestos en competiciones nacionales.

Estepona fencers take three medals at the Andalucia Cup The International Fencing Club of Estepona competed recently at the first tournament on the region’s official fencing calendar at Motril, contesting the U15 and U17 category.

Olatz Bilbao took a very creditable silver medal, just missing out on first place to Naiara Moreno 15 to 14. This young sportswoman, at just 12 years old, and the Spanish champion in her age group was competing in the U17 and achieved a bronze medal behind Belén Villarreal and Lucía Cáceres.

Christina Ocaña took the bronze medal in this first trial of the season and qualified for the national phase of the Spanish Championships to be held in Madrid in May of next year.

There were good results also for Lauren

Kettner in her first official competition and for José Daniel Montero who finished 6th in the men’s competition.

These results bode well for a great season for Club Internacional de Esgrima de Estepona.

Enduro: San Roque prepara la última cita puntuable del Campeonato de Andalucía El espectáculo del enduro vuelve a la Ciudad de San Roque con la llegada de la gran final del Campeonato de Andalucía a celebrarse el domingo 28 de noviembre.

Todo un privilegio para los amantes del mundo del motor y de las dos ruedas, gracias al trabajo y esfuerzo económico del Moto Club las Tres Patás.

Hasta San Roque llegará un buen ramillete de figuras del panorama nacional dispuestos a dar lo mejor de sí, ya que todos los títulos están por decidir.

En doble jornada, de sábado y domingo, se darán cita todas las categorías convocadas en el campeonato andaluz, desde júnior a veteranos. En total, siete modalidades.

El trazado de la prueba la convierte de nuevo en una de las de mayor dificultad del circuito, ya que los pilotos deberán hacer buen uso de su destreza sobre las máquinas.

El trazado de la carrera transcurre en la jornada del domingo 28 de noviembre desde Palma León, pasando por los alrededores de la localidad y centrándose

en Albarracín, Alcaidesa, Sierra del Arca, para luego retornar a la zona de paddock, lugar de la verificación de tiempos.

San Roque prepares for the grand final of the Andalucia Enduro Championship The spectacle of enduro motorcycle trials returns to San Roque when the municipality hosts the grand final of the Andalucian Championships on Sunday 28 November.

A treat for lovers of two wheeled motor racing, brought to you thanks to the hard work of the Moto Club las Tres Patás.

Competitors will include some of the top riders on the national enduro scene, and the competition will be intense as all the titles are up for grabs.

The racing will feature competition in a total of seven categories ranging from junior to veteran. The circuit is a challenging one where all the riders will have the opportunity to show off their riding skills.

The circuit begins from Palma León, passing through the outskirts of the town before taking in Albarracín, Alcaidesa, Sierra del Arca, before returning to the paddock area for time verification.

McDowell gana la batalla contra el viento y se lleva el Andalucía Valderrama Masters

Una vuelta de 74 golpes, tres sobre el par, ha sido suficiente para que Graeme McDowell se proclame vencedor de la primera edición del Andalucía Valderrama Masters, en una jornada en la que el viento ha sido el mayor rival para los jugadores.

El campeón del US Open se mete por derecho en el top ten mundial y da un zarpazo a Kaymer en su particular lucha por el número uno de Europa. Miguel Ángel Jiménez, José Mari Olazábal y Sergio García, terminan en el Top ten La última jornada del Andalucía Valderrama Masters ha vivido una encarnizada lucha entre los irlandeses, Gareth Maybin, Damien McGrane y Graeme McDowell.

Maybin parecía descolgarse al comenzar con tres bogeys consecutivos mientras sus dos rivales se mantenían en contienda hasta el hoyo 16 en el que McGrane ha firmado un doble bogey que le ha sacado de la pelea, terminando su vuelta con dos

bogeys más.

El hoyo 17 de Valderrama ha resultado decisivo una vez más. Maybin llegaba a un golpe de McDowell (-4) y se ha ido al agua, terminando con bogey para salir al 18 a dos golpes de su rival. Los dos han fallado en el último hoyo, pero McDowell tenía margen para ganar, incluso con una vuelta en la que sólo ha firmado un birdie por cuatro bogeys.

El danés Soren Kjeldsen, último ganador en Valderrama en 2008 y campeón del Open de Andalucía 2009, ha sido uno de los tres únicos jugadores que ha bajado hoy del par. Con sus 69 golpes, se ha encaramado hasta la segunda posición empatado con Gareth Maybin y Damien McGrane. Los otros dos jugadores que hoy le han ganado al campo con menos de 71 golpes son José Mari Olazábal (70) y Joost Luiten (69).

McDowell beats the wind to lift the Andalucia Valderrama Masters trophy

Graeme McDowell held off the challenge of Gareth Maybin and Damien McGrane to claim a battling victory at the Andalucia Valderrama Masters in Sotogrande.

On a day where strong winds made low scoring extremely difficult, McDowell went round in 74 to finish on three under, two ahead of Maybin, McGrane and Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen.

Both Maybin and McGrane had been in contention for victory up until the closing holes, only to see their hopes dashed over Valderrama’s notoriously tough home stretch.

McDowell and Maybin had begun the final day with a four-shot advantage at the top of the leaderboard, but it was McGrane who moved into pole position as the tournament moved towards its conclusion.

The 39 year old picked up birdies at three,

seven, 11 and 15 to get to five under through 15 holes, with his solitary bogey coming at the ninth.

And with McDowell and Maybin slipping back to four and three under respectively, McGrane appeared the most likely to walk away with the €500,000 first prize.

Unfortunately, he then faltered, double bogeying 16 before dropping further shots at 17 and 18.

And with Maybin also finishing bogey-bogey, McDowell could afford to play the final hole with caution, coming up short of the green in two before taking three more shots to seal a wonderful win.

A delighted McDowell said: “It’s very special to win here and I draw a lot of comparisons with Pebble Beach”, (where he won the US Open Championship in June).

JoJo France and Claudia Norris Welcome to the health, nutrition and fitness column. This month Personal Trainer JoJo France and Nutritional Therapist Claudia Norris are looking into weight loss.

1 in 4 people are obese and this number is escalating. Many illnesses offer no cure, but with the right fitness and food, obesity can be a thing of the past.

The Personal Trainer Circuits Over the last few months, we have looked at the different types of exercises that help keep our body in shape. In my opinion, a circuit style workout is one of the best all rounder for losing fat and increasing lean muscle.

The idea is to show you 10 exercises over the next couple of months, so by the New Year you will have a full circuit workout to do.

The workout works well in a gym but can even be done a home; all you need is a chair and a skipping rope and a timer.

The aim is to do each of the 10 exercises for 45 seconds, then 30 seconds and if can manage it 20 seconds.You may not manage this on the first couple of attempts, that’s ok, take a very quick rest when you need to then carry on …after each exercise take a 10 second rest, after each round of 10 rest for 60 seconds.

Warm up.

Take a walk, use the stairs, walk around your urbanization anything so that you feel you need to remove a layer of clothing.

Squat - great for legs and bum

Start with feet hip width apart, now bend at the hip (as if you were about to sit on the loo) go as deep as the back of your knees. Now stand up and repeat, start slow but build up the speed, your legs should feel warm after around 30 seconds and by 45 seconds you may feel some discomfort, that’s ok.

Skipping - works everything, legs, arms and heart

Eugene Marais BChD You may wish to start with the ‘knee’ version of this, where you get on all fours, arms just wider than the shoulder, with bum and hips down, now lower the chest to the floor and from the bottom press back up. Pull the tummy muscles in when you press up.

The full version is on your feet with legs together, bend arms, chest down now push up from the bottom…This is harder but you will achieve much better results, faster.

Remember to warm up and cool down and to stretch out all your muscles after a workout, drink plenty of fluids, if you are new to exercise check with your GP before starting any new program.

The Nutritional Therapist Let your calories follow the path of the sun Recently, the clocks have gone back and the mornings are less dark as we struggle out of our cosy beds. Now is the time we become more conscious of the rising and setting of the sun and this has reminded me of one of my weight management rules of thumb: “Let your calories follow the path of the sun”.

This simply means that as the sun rises during the day so should your calorific intake up to 1pm to 2pm. At this point the sun starts to set for the day and so our calorific intake should set as well. I use this quirky comment to help remind me that all too often we end up rushing a mouse’s breakfast and then eat our largest meal at the end of the day. What I recommend to clients, particularly those wanting to lose weight, is to consume 80% of your calories by 4pm.

Your metabolism starts to slow down over the day and the food we eat closer to bed time is more likely to become fat for tomorrow rather than energy for today. So I try to focus on making sure that within an hour of waking I eat breakfast; a good and healthy one, full of protein and low on refined sugar.

Often I have eggs with wheat-free bread and / or a nutty oat muesli (which I make myself -email me for the recipe).

Watching the sun rise in the morning helps remind me to make sure I have a healthy breakfast and lunch and a smaller dinner. So, remember that although it is now a little lighter in the mornings, it doesn’t mean that your breakfast should be any lighter or less healthy.
