Bienvenido a la edición de nuestro periódico The Resident.

Esta época del año siempre es extraña, durante Noviembre finalmente le vamos diciendo adiós al verano, aunque este año al verano le cuesta irse y hasta la fecha está haciendo un tiempo maravilloso. Ya nos estamos preparando para el gran acontecimiento de las Navidades. Una de las cosas que me encanta de España es que, al contrario que en Inglaterra, donde las Navidades empiezan en Septiembre y por el 25 de Diciembre la gente empieza a estar harta de la palabra Navidad, las Navidades realmente empiezan en Diciembre. Será interesante ver qué pasa este año, creo que las cosas pueden presentarse de dos maneras: que la gente sea cauta y que haga un gasto mínimo, permaneciendo en casa y disfrutando del presupuesto navideño; o puede que por el contrario, digamos: pasémoslo bien y ya veremos las consecuencias, es decir una actitud de vivir ahora y pagar más tarde. Sé lo que la mayoría de los negocios locales están esperando.

Una vez más, la Feria para mayores de 50 años estará en la ciudad de Estepona, en el Palacio de Congresos.

Habrá actividades y muchos expositores y aunque estará dedicado a las personas de más de 50 años, también será interesante para el público en general.

Eric Knowles de la seria televisiva de Reino Unido “Antiques Roadshow” estará allí para valuar esos tesoros escondidos, mientras que Novelli´s impartirá unas lecciones de cocina.

Nuestro periódico The Resident estará allí, en el evento, así que por qué no darse una vueltecita por allí y charlar con nosotros, estamos siempre encantados de conocer a nuestros lectores. La feria tendrá lugar el sábado 28 y el domingo 29 de Noviembre.

A final del mes pasado los ojos de los enamorados del golf estuvieron puestos en Casares, en la Finca Cortesín, donde tuvo lugar la Volvo Master de golf.

Dieciséis de los mejores jugadores de golf del mundo compitieron por el primer premio de 750.000 euros, junto con el tiempo maravilloso que nos acompañó fue una gran promoción para la zona y dicho evento, el cual fue televisado, fue un gran éxito. Welcome to the November issue of The Resident. This is always a strange time of year, during November we are finally saying goodbye to the summer, although this year it has been very reluctant to let go, with some fabulous weather even right up to the time of going to press. We are also beginning to gear up for the next big event - Christmas.

One of the things I love about Spain is that, unlike Britain where Christmas begins in September and by the time December 25th rolls in most people are heartily sick of the word, Christmas only really begins to get going in December. It will be very interesting to see what happens this year, I expect things can go either of two ways: people will be very cautious and keep spending to a minimum, staying in and enjoying a budget Christmas; or there could be a sod it, let’s enjoy ourselves and damn the consequences, live now, pay later attitude! I know which most local businesses are hoping for.

Once again the Over 50s show is rolling into town, when Estepona’s Palacio de Congresos plays host to this event, aimed at the Costa del Sol’s more senior residents. There is a host of exhibitors and activities, and whilst pitched at the older resident, is of interest to anyone. Eric Knowles from the popular UK TV series ‘Antiques Roadshow’ will be on hand to value those hidden treasures, whilst Novelli’s will be staging a number of cookery demonstrations. The Resident will also be attending the event so why not drop by and have a chat, we are always keen to meet our readers. The Over 50s Show takes place on Saturday, 28th and Sunday, 29th November.

At the end of last month they eyes of the golfing world were turned towards Casares, when La Finca Cortesin Golf Club hosted the first Volvo World Match Play Competition. A field of sixteen of the world’s top golfers competed for the three quarter of a million euros first prize, which was ultimately awarded to English golfer, Ross Fisher.

The beautiful setting along with the glorious weather was a great promotion for the area and the event, televised worldwide, was a great success. Feria de Navidad en la escuela internacional de San Roque Por primera vez, la escuela abrirá sus puertas para un día de diversión el Sábado, 28 de noviembre desde las 12.00 hasta las 16.00. Será una oportunidad para toda la familia a disfrutar de actividades tan diferentes.

Habrá más de 50 proveedores que participan de la moda de señora, joyería, fotografía, libros, juguetes, ropa de niños y accesorios.

No sólo habrá grandes marcas participando sino también habrá talleres creativos, un castillo hinchable, y además una visita de Papá Noel con regalos y fotos.

Christmas Fayre at San Roque International School For the first time the school will open their doors for a day of festival fun on Saturday, 28th November from 12 noon until 4 pm.

It will provide an opportunity for the whole family to go down and enjoy so many different activities.

There will be over 50 vendors participating from ladies’ fashion, jewellery, photography, books, toys, kids clothing and accessories to name but a few.

Not only will there be big brands participating, they are also dedicated to inspiring children so will be running creative workshops a bouncy castle plus a visit from Father Christmas himself with presents and photos.

Entrance is free, so why not pop down for a browse around the stalls and have something to eat and drink.

Un gatito es por vida El último de los gatitos de este año ha nacido y muchos se encuentran en la más trágica de las circunstancias “Los pocos que rescatan gatos y gatitos abandonados tratan de encontrar un hogar para ellos”, dijo Nane e, una de las “mujeres gato de Estepona”.

Durante el verano, ella y Ana de Aura Vet Clinic, tenían más de 40 gatos a su cuidado en espera para encontrar un hogar.

La respuesta al sufrimiento interminable de gatitos y gatos adultos es el método internacionalmente aceptado de TNR esterilización (Trap, Neuter, Release). Voluntarios en atrapar a los gatos, veterinarios y enfermeros cualificados se dedican a castrarlos y ponerles un clip en la oreja izquierda para indicar que se esterilizan; a continuación, los voluntarios los dejan en libertad en el mismo lugar en que fueron capturados. Resultados: ¡ gatos sanos que no se reproducen!

Debido a causas naturales la gradual disminución de la población de gatos

llega a un feliz equilibrio, se mantiene los gatos originales. Estos gatos son muy valiosos para: urbanizaciones, hoteles, áreas de recolección de basura, etc, y mantienen las ratas y ratones, cucarachas y serpientes a niveles mínimos.

Un pequeño grupo de “Cat People” se reunieron a principios del mes pasado para formar una asociación y llevar a cabo estas “clínicas”. Ellos estarán encantados de oír a otros “Cat People”, que quieran participar y y mantener este proyecto en movimiento.

También están dispuestos a crear un centro de acogida local para gatos y gatitos abandonados en los que podrán allí esperar encontrar un nuevo hogar. En la actualidad, en la zona de Estepona-Manilva, lamentablemente muy pocas personas están dispuestas a acoger estos gatitos abandonados.

A kitten is for life The last of this year’s kittens have been born and many are being found in the most tragic of circumstances “The few of us who do take in abandoned cats and kittens and try to find homes for them, are full to capacity”, said Nanette, one of Estepona’s “cat women”. Over summer, she and Ana of Aura Vet Clinic, had over 40 cats in their care waiting for homes.

The answer to the never ending suffering of kittens and adult cats is the internationally accepted TNR method of neutering (Trap, Neuter, Release). Volunteers trap the cats, qualified vets and nurses neuter them and clip the left ear to indicate that they are neutered, and then the volunteers release them, once they have recovered, in the same location where they were caught.

Result - healthy cats that don’t breed!

Due to natural causes the cat populations gradually decrease and a happy balance is maintained with the original cats generally

keeping the new comers away. These Community Cats are very valuable to urbanisation’s, hotels, rubbish collection areas etc., as they do keep the rats and mice, roaches and snakes at bay.

A small group of “Cat People” got together earlier last month to form an Association to undertake these “Snip a Stray” clinics.

They will be very happy to hear from other “Cat People” who would like to get involved and thus get this project moving.

They are also keen to start a local cattery for abandoned cats and kittens where they can be kept while awaiting their new homes.

At present, in the Estepona-Manilva area, there are unfortunately very few people who take in these cat companions.

El Arsenal Costa del Sol manda a 3 de sus jóvenes promesas para realizar pruebas con un club de la Premier League inglesa Muchos son los jóvenes que sueñan con una carrera en el mundo del fútbol, de llegar a ser grandes estrellas con el balón y convertirse algún día en leyendas en el terreno de juego.

Tener una oportunidad y conseguir pruebas con prestigiosos equipos tanto españoles como del extranjero es con lo que todo niño o niña sueña y 3 jóvenes del campo de Gibraltar pueden presumir de haberlo logrado gracias a la escuela del Arsenal en España, a la que los mismos pertenecen y con la que llevan entrenando y perfeccionando su técnica desde los comienzos de la escuela.

Estos tres aspirantes a futbolistas han sido los elegidos para viajar a Inglaterra y realizar pruebas con un conocido equipo de la Premier League.

Los jóvenes, los cuales han pasado 3 días en el centro de excelencia del club teniendo la oportunidad de trabajar con el resto de jugadores de la academia, han seguido un plan de entrenamiento en el que se incorporaron sesiones tácticas, mucha preparación física así como partidos. Todo ello con el fin de impresionar a los entrenadores y demás personal técnico del club inglés, los cuales observaban atentos

la actuación de los jóvenes.

Ken, director de la escuela del Arsenal en España, se ha trasladado con ellos a tierras inglesas para darles su apoyo y ha comentado que “este viaje ha sido una primera toma de contacto para estos chicos, y han podido apreciar el nivel técnico y físico que deben de alcanzar si quieren llegar a ser futbolistas profesionales”.

Estas 3 jóvenes promesas, una de las cuales reside actualmente en Inglaterra como parte de sus estudios y el cual juega en un equipo local, han formado parte de la escuela de los gunners desde que la misma empezara sus entrenamientos hace 3 años, presumiendo de haber entrenado bajo las órdenes de entrenadores acreditados del Arsenal aquí en España.

Su progreso ha sido el resultado del efectivo sistema de entrenamiento que el club inglés utiliza, el cual incluye programas específicos y estructurados de táctica, fuerza y condicionamiento.

Todo ello, unido al esfuerzo tanto de los jóvenes como de la escuela del Arsenal en España les ha permitido que, por unos días, hayan podido convertirse en estrellas de la liga inglesa.

Arsenal Costa del Sol send three youngsters for Premiership trial in UK Many youngsters dream of a career in football, being big stars and one day becoming legends on the pitch. To get a trial for one of the top teams both in Spain and overseas is what every young player aspires to, and here three such players have achieved that dream thanks to Arsenal in Spain’s football school, of which they have been members since the school began.

These three hopefuls have been chosen to travel to the UK to a well known Premiership team where they have spent three days in the Club’s centre of excellence where they have worked with other players, following a training plan incorporating tactical and physical training along with matches, in order to make an impression on the club’s coaches and technical staff.

Ken Jones, director of Arsenal in Spain, who has travelled with them to lend his

support, said “this trip has been the first contact for these kids, who have seen the techncial and physical levels they must achieve if the wish to become professional footballers”.

These three young hopefuls, one of which is now living in the UK as part of his studies and plays for a local team have been part of the Arsenal school since it opened three years ago and can boast having received training from Arsenal’s accredited coaches here in Spain, and their progress has been the result of the effective training system employed by the English Club. All this coupled with both the efforts of the young players themselves has given them an opportunity to become Premiership stars.

En noviembre se inicia el traslado del Ayuntamiento al Diego Salinas El alcalde de San Roque, Fernando Palma, ha hecho público que en noviembre se iniciarán los trabajos para trasladar el Ayuntamiento al pabellón central del Diego Salinas.

Palma indicó que “pese a las dificultades económicas, hemos alcanzado un compromiso con la empresa constructora, que va a terminar los pocos trabajos que quedan en el edificio, que entregará a finales de este mes”.

A partir de esa fecha, el Ayuntamiento iniciará en el interior del edificio los trabajos previos al traslado del personal, sobre todo en materia de comunicaciones, redes, telefonía, etc.

Posteriormente se trasladará el mobiliario del mismo, que en su gran mayoría es el mismo que existe en el actual Ayuntamiento, aunque lógicamente se comprará aquello realmente necesario.

Yoga en Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro Yoga was introduced at the “Little Brains” centre, Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro where Elaine O’Connell, qualified Kundalini Yoga instructor, life coach and personal trainer, held her complimentary introductory class on Tuesday, 10th November. There was a wonderful turnout with the class enjoying yoga set to music and a meditation to end.

San Roque Town Hall move begins in November

The Mayor of San Roque, Fernando Palma, has announced that next month the Town Hall has begun the process of moving its operations to the central building in the

Diego Salinas complex, the town’s former barracks.

Palma stated that “despite current economic difficulties, a deal was reached with the construction company carrying out the renovation, which will see the completion of the final works and the delivery of the building to the local authorities later this month.

Work will then begin to fit out the building prior to the transfer of personnel.

To keep expenses to a minimum, where possible furniture and equipment will be moved from their existing premises to the new building.

Galerías Paniagua Las III Jornadas Micológicas en la Finca La Alcaidesa se trasladan al 12 de diciembre por falta de lluvias La ausencia de lluvias ha forzado a suspender la celebración, el próximo sábado día 21, de las III Jornadas Micológicas que iban a tener lugar en la Finca La Alcaidesa. Se ha decidido trasladar la fecha de esta actividad hasta el próximo sábado 12 de diciembre, a la espera de que en este lapso de tiempo lleguen las precipitaciones y el bosque se llene de setas.

Hay que recordar que la primera fecha prevista para celebrar estas Jornadas era la del 8 de noviembre, pero que se decidió trasladarlas al día 21 por falta de lluvias, circunstancia que se ha mantenido en estas dos semanas. La organización ha decidido que las Jornadas se suspenderán hasta el año próximo si finalmente el 12 de diciembre tampoco hay setas en el campo.

La Finca La Alcaidesa tenía previsto acoger las III Jornadas Micológicas, en las que unos 60 aficionados a las setas disfrutarían de una serie de actividades como una ponencia didáctica, una salida al campo para recoger ejemplares, un pequeño mercado y una degustación gastronómica.

El programa de actividades previsto es el siguiente: el inicio, a las 8.30 horas con una recepción. A las 9.00 se dará un desayuno, y a las 9.30 se procederá a la inauguración oficial; a las 10.00 el experto en Micología Domingo Mariscal presentará su libro ‘Setas y cocina para principiantes’; entre las 11.30 y las 14.00 se desarrollará el sendero didáctico para la identificación y recolección de hongos; entre las 14.00 y las 14.30 se procederá a la clasificación de los ejemplares; y entre las 14.30 y las 18.00 tendrá lugar el almuerzo, la exposición y el Mercado Micológico.

El precio de la inscripción es de 25 euros, y se incluye el desayuno, la ponencia, un CD ilustrativo sobre los hongos y características, la asistencia de monitoresguías, el almuerzo, una exposición de fotos y el mercado micológico.

The Mycological Day at Finca La Alcaidesa postponed due to lack of rain The lack of rain has once again forced the postponement of this celebration of all things funghi until Saturday, 12th December.

Originally due to take place on the 8th November, then the 21st, it is now hoped that the necessary rains will come in time to produce some ‘fruit’ for the aficionados to sample.

ASABAM colabora en una campaña benefica de cara a navidad para las familias mas necesitadas.

La situación de crisis económica por la que actualmente pasamos, ha provocado que muchos vecinos, amigos, familiares, y gente de nuestro alrededor vivan en una extrema necesidad, que no cubre siquiera una alimentación básica para su familia.

Por este motivo, la fundación tutelar para personas con discapacidad de San Pedro de Alcántara y la Asociación de difusión musical ASABAM de Manilva, han tomado la iniciativa de intentar responder en la medida de sus posibilidades a esta dura

realidad, llevando a cabo una Campaña de recogida de alimentos no perecederos, juguetes y ropa, con ayuda de todo el que pueda colaborar.

Los responsables de esta iniciativa piden la solidaridad de los vecinos de la comarca que puedan ayudar con cualquier cosa, por muy pequeña que sea, para poder beneficiar a estas personas.

La campaña se desarrollará hasta el 10 de Diciembre. A partir de esta última fecha, comenzará el reparto, para que las familias puedan disponer de todo antes del día de Navidad.

For this reason, the foundation for the protection of the disabled based in San Pedro de Alcantara, and the Manilva music association ASABAM, have taken steps to alleviate the situation through a campaign to collect non-

perishable foodstuffs, toys and clothing which can be distributed to those most in need.

The organisers are calling on the generosity of local residents to donate any items that they can, however small, so as to help these people.

The campaign will run until 10th December after which all those items donated will be distributed so that these needy families can have the items before Christmas Day.

El plazo de entrega de trabajos estará abierto hasta el próximo 24 de noviembre y estos se podrán depositar en la sede de la asociación en

LUISANA organises a drawing competition Manilva’s LUISANA association for the disabled has organised the sixth edition of its annual drawing competition timed to coincide with the Day of the Disabled on the 3rd December.

The competition is open to anyone with the theme being how we view disability in various situations in everyday life.

The deadline is Tuesday, 24th November, and entries can be

submitted at the Edificio Usos Multiples or the libraries in Sabinillas, Manilva or Castillo.

The works should be accompanied with the entrants details: age, address and telephone number.

El PSOE de Manilva no aprobó en el pleno del Ayuntamiento la adjudicación del servicio de agua potable y alcantarillado En un pleno extraordinario con tres puntos en el orden del día, dos de ellos referidos al tema de la concesión del servicio del agua y alcantarillado en el municipio.

En concreto los dos temas principales abordaban la propuesta de inadmisión del recurso especial interpuesto por Aqualia, S.L. contra el acuerdo del Ayuntamiento Pleno el día 27 de octubre de 2009. Este punto fue aprobado con los votos a favor de los cinco concejales de IU que integran el equipo de gobierno y las dos ediles del grupo No Adscrito Mari Carmen Ferriz y Paqui Tomé.

El asunto de mayor importancia para el futuro inmediato del municipio y de sus trabajadores municipales era el destinado a la propuesta de resolución de los recursos especiales interpuestos contra los acuerdos del Ayuntamiento Pleno el pasado 26 de diciembre de 2008, 19 de febrero de 2009 y 7 de mayo del mismo año y en su caso adjudicación del contrato de gestión del servicio de abastecimiento de agua y alcantarillado.

La alcaldesa de Manilva dio comienzo al pleno refiriéndose a la importancia de dar viabilidad a este asunto por varios motivos; el hecho de garantizar las nóminas de los trabajadores hasta diciembre y consolidar el servicio del agua ya que la empresa Aquagest

lo tiene en la actualidad en precario.

Seguidamente el portavoz del PSOE, Salvador Zotano, propuso al pleno someter a votación la retirada de este asunto del orden del día, hecho que fue aprobado con los votos a favor de los cuatro concejales del PSOE más los no adscritos Yolanda Holgado y Augusto Gil, quienes cumplen así con lo anunciado tras su incorporación a las filas socialistas. Los cinco ediles del gobierno de IU votaron en contra y el resto de la corporación, dos ediles del PP, dos de la ASM y las no adscritas Paqui Tomé y Mari Carmen Ferriz, se abstuvieron.

Por tal motivo, el asunto fue retirado con lo que el tema de la adjudicación del servicio de

suministro de agua vuelve a sufrir un nuevo retraso.

Muñoz se dirigió a los presentes y a la corporación manifestando su negativa a que utilicen el asunto del agua como moneda de cambio de gestión y apelaba a la responsabilidad política para afrontar este asunto con premura.

La primera edil manilveña insistió en que “gobernamos en minoría y necesitamos el apoyo de los demás miembros que conforman el pleno, pero no estoy dispuesta a que el tema del agua se convierta en un chantaje político ya que lo que hay que mirar y cuidar son los intereses del propio Ayuntamiento y desbloquear este tema definitivamente”, finalizó la edil.

Major rift in IU and PSOE accord The first cracks appeared recently in the fragile accord between the minority Izquierda Unida government of Manilva and their ‘partners’ the PSOE. In a special meeting of the full council earlier today one of the main points of order was award of the contract for provision of drinking water and sewerage services to the utility company Aquagest.

The PSOE refused to sanction this and called for the point to be removed from the agenda, citing the need for a feasibility study into a partnership arrangement which would see the municipality maintaining a 51% controlling stake.

A vote saw the 5 IU councillors voting to reject this motion, whilst the 4 PSOE plus the two former ASM councillors Augusto Gil and Yolanda Holgado, newly affiliated to the PSOE voted in favour, whilst the remaining councillors abstained, thus effectively blocking the Aquagest contract.

The Mayoress, Antonia Muñoz,

criticised this move claiming the PSOE were putting political manoeuvring above the public interest as the deal would have seen a 5 million euro injection into the council’s coffers, 1.8 million of which was destined to pay council employees’ wages till the end of the year with the remainder being used to pay off debts to suppliers.

She went on to claim that this was political revenge for her refusal to admit the two rebel ASM councillors, as part of any IU/PSOE coalition.

In reply Salvador Zotano, spokesman for the PSOE, denied this was a political move and that we shouldn’t be selling control of this essential utility for 5 million euros, and that the government should be capable of meeting its wage commitments without having to “enslave” the people into making such deals.

He went on to assure that his party will be quite prepared to approve the contract on production of a feasibility study, and assurances

that Manilva retains that majority stake.

El objetivo que me llevó a la política fue el intentar mejorar la calidad de vidad de mis conciudadanos, una vez dentro luché con todos mis medios para defender estos principios.

Y así me dí cuenta una vez tras otra que era imposible llevar estos ideales en el Partido Popular. Antes prefiero ser fiel a mis principios que dejarme llevar por los intereses de un partido político.

1. What prompted you to leave the Partido Popular?

My reasons for leaving the Partido Popular (PP) were detailed in my letter of resignation, but in brief I resigned because I felt the Party’s leadership at local level were putting political issues before the welfare of the local people.

once elected I did all I could to fulfill this aim. But again and again I found it impossible to honour this pledge whilst a member of the PP. I would rather stay true to my principles than be sidetracked by the political interests of the Party.

3. Under what circumstances, if any, would you consider rejoining the PP? In Spain we still have a weakness in our democracy in that we vote for a political entity and not the individual and we could learn from the British system in this. When Spain is put ahead of political considerations, then would I have no objection in returning to the PP. 4. Are you considering affiliating with another party?

Since being in politics I have come to realise that most parties have similar democratic beliefs, and so I wish to remain faithful to the ideal that led me into politics, that of fighting to improve the life of the people of Manilva.

As part of the group of independent councillors I do not have to follow a party line, and therefore can better defend the interests of the people.

5. What are your intentions for the next election?

I know personally many of the people who voted for me, and if they continue to express their confidence in me then I would be honoured to continue to represent them in future elections.

La alcaldesa de Manilva, Antonia Muñoz Vázquez y el concejal de Hacienda Diego Díaz han asistido a la Gerencia del Catastro con el fin de realizar una revisión catastral de las viviendas del municipio.

En estos momentos los órganos responsables están inmersos en una revisión catastral que tendrá como fin regularizar las viviendas del municipio. Por lo tanto, se trata de formalizar las titularidades de dichas viviendas, ya que en muchos casos a pesar de ser propietarios la construcción no está a su nombre.

También existen los casos de casas denominadas rústicas

que deberán cambiarse por urbanas ya que han cambiado su condición.

En definitiva, reglamentar y organizar el catastro de manera que todas y cada una de las viviendas situadas en el municipio estén inscritas según sus características reales y que sus propietarios cuenten con sus derechos y sus deberes de una forma correcta.

Esta revisión catastral se realizará a lo largo del año 2010 y se espera que para enero del 2011 entre en vigor y todo esté regulado como marca la ley.

Cadastral revision for property in Manilva The Gerencia del Catastro, the body that deals with the ownership, extent, and rateable value of property, is currently completing their cadastral revision for property in Manilva.

The aim is to regularise the situation of all properties in the municipality particularly a number of properties that have been built but not registered in the owners name. There are also a number of properties that have had their

status changed from rustic to urban.

In short the review aims to regularise the status of each and every property in the municipality of Manilva, and that their owners are eligible for all the rights and responsibilities as appropriate.

This review is expected to take the whole of 2010 with January 2011 the expected completion date.

Earlier this month Manilva’s Archaeological museum was officialy opened to the public.

The museum is located in the Castle at Castillo de la Duquesa, itself a site of great historical interest, and occupies two rooms, specially refurbished for this purpose.

The museum’s exhibits include items recovered from the municipality’s numerous historical sites, including the Roman villa, bathhouse and fish processing factory located in the Castle’s immediate surroundings. These items include everyday items such as lamps, ornaments, fishing gear, pottery, construction materials,

and personal items of the people who lived and worked in the area during the four centuries that it was an important industrial centre during the Roman era.

There is also a recreation of a burial tomb, along with other large items.

The Museum is in the Castle at Castillo de la Duquesa and is open from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday.

Eisteddfod prize on two occasions. The male choir is also internationally renowned, having appeared in many parts of Europe as well as Canada and the United States.

El Ayuntamiento adecuará el camino de la Loma del Esparragal como nuevo acceso al Cementerio Santo Cristo de la Veracruz El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, informa que el camino rural de la Loma del Esparragal pasará a ser, tras su adecuación, en acceso oficial al Cementerio Santo Cristo de la Verazuz.

Carmen Ocaña, concejala de Agricultura, entiende que “se trata de un camino social, puesto que servirá de alternativa al actual camino para evitar accidentes”, y su arreglo obedece a una antigua reivindicación de los vecinos.

Las obras consistirán en el asfaltado de 750 metros de camino y el cruce del arroyo Monterroso, además del arreglo de tuberías, compactación del camino con

zahorra, placa de hormigón y asfalto, y también se colocará, una vez terminado, un control de gálibo para que los camiones de gran tonelaje no puedan transitar por la vía.

Las obras están incluidas en el proyecto de la puesta en valor de los recursos hidrológicos, por lo que se procederá a su arreglo coincidiendo con la segunda fase del proyecto de renovación de tuberías del manantial de La Tejilla a su paso por la zona, obra actualmente en curso por valor de 974.994,41 € con cargo al Fondo Estatal de Inversión Local.

Estepona promotes local tourism at London’s World Travel Market Estepona’s credentials as a top tourist destination were recently on display at the annual World Travel Market held in London’s ExCeL exhibition centre earlier this month.

Estepona was exhibiting as part of the Costa del Sol tourist board and Turismo Andaluz, and representatives were keen to stress the efforts made by the municipality over the past twelve months to retain the British tourists who form the largest section of visitors, but who have been tempted away to other

destinations outside the euro zone, such as North Africa, Turkey, and the former Yugoslavia, due to the poor pound/euro exchange rate. These efforts have included infrastructure improvements as well as development of alternatives to the traditional beach holiday, such as health tourism, rural and eco tourism, sporting and cultural holidays.

The safety, health provisions and easy communications that Estepona has to offer visitors was also stressed.

The Mayor also met with the

Turespaña director and the director of the Tourist Office in London to ensure Estepona’s position within the Costa del Sol brand.

The World Travel Market is considered one of the world’s most important tourism fairs and, unlike the ITB or Fitur, is aimed exclusively at industry professionals.

The WTM attracted some 45,000 attendees, including international buyers, tourism professionals and around 3,000 journalists from around the world.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona ha aprobado por unanimidad la bajada del tipo impositivo del I.B.I para 2010 El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, a través de la delegación municipal de Hacienda, informa que la concejala delegada del área, Francis Bernal, ha llevado al pleno del día de martes 10 noviembre la aprobación de una propuesta para bajar el tipo impositivo del IBI para 2010, del 0.85 al 0,70 con el fin de compensar la subida correspondiente de la actualización de los valores catastrales aprobada en 2007 y que llegó a incrementar considerablemente el valor de los inmuebles del municipio.

Esta aprobación por unanimidad del punto,

permitirá que pese a que la rebaja del tipo no supone un descenso real en el recibo del IBI, sí evite que se aumente la presión fiscal sobre los vecinos, según apuntan desde el área municipal de Hacienda.

El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, recaudó 25 millones de euros por IBI en 2008, dejaría de ingresar 88.000 euros en 2010 con esta medida según la concejala de Hacienda, Francisca Bernal, quien ha anunciado que se mantendrá la subvención para los empadronados en el municipio.

Estepona Town Council approves reduction in IBI for next year Estepona’s Town Council at a full council meeting held on Tuesday, 10th November, unanimously approved the proposal to reduce the council tax (IBI) for next year, 2010 from 0.85% down to 0.7% of the property’s rateable value (Valor Catastral).

This move is designed to counter the increased cost to taxpayers as a result of the 2007 revision of the valores catastrales which saw a large increase in the rateable value of properties in the Estepona municipality.

Inaugurado el Centro de Interpretación de la Villa Romana de Las Torres, en Estepona El alcalde de Estepona, David Valadez acompañado del diputado en el congreso, Luis Tomas, han inaugurado el Centro de Interpretación de la Villa Romana de Las Torres, en Guadalmansa, acompañado, entre otros, por el arqueólogo municipal, Ildefonso Navarro.

Los restos de la villa romana de Las Torres se conocen desde principios del siglo XX, cuando se descubrieron, junto a la torre almenara de Guadalmansa, los restos de una gran villa romana del siglo I d. C. con zonas dedicadas a la producción de garum (salazones de pescado), a la vivienda del propietario, termas, etc. Entre

los hallazgos más importantes realizados en las excavaciones de 1915-16 y 1929 destacan varios suelos de mosaicos, columnas de mármol, restos de estatuas, etc.

Dada la riqueza arqueológica de la zona, el planeamiento urbanístico contempló no sólo la protección de los restos, sino también la creación de una zona arqueológica “visitable”, orientada a la difusión del patrimonio histórico. Así, en el interior de una gran zona verde, de más de 25.000 m2, ajardinada con especies autóctonas, pueden visitarse los restos de la villa romana, la torre almenara de Guadalmansa y el centro de interpretación.

Los restos romanos que se pueden visitar pertenecen a una villa que estuvo activa entre los siglos I al V d. C. (hace entre 1500 y 2000 años), sobre cuyas ruinas se ubicó un cementerio musulmán del siglo X d. C. Además de los restos de construcciones y los enterramientos, se han recuperado numerosos objetos de la vida cotidiana tales como cerámica, ánforas, agujas de cobre, monedas, etc.

Por medio de esta campaña se va a poner en marcha todo un equipo de trabajo con el que se pretende realzar los valores de la solidaridad, donde tomarán parte los diferentes colectivos Juveniles y otros voluntarios creando un tejido participativo que fomente la sensibilidad sobre este tema.

Desde el 16 de Noviembre, comienza el plazo de inscripción para aquellas familias que quieran solicitar acogerse a este proyecto, en el que podrían ser beneficiarios y obtener una partida de juguetes.

XV “ No Child Without a Toy” Campaign 2009 Estepona’s Youth Department has opened registration for this year’s annual “No Child Without a Toy” Campaign, organised by the ‘Frente Bolillon’ association. The campaign aims to ensure that none of Estepona’s needy children goes without a gift this Christmas.

The campaign also fosters a spirit of solidarity amongst the various youth groups and other volunteers involved in the campaign.

Copa de Andalucía BTT - VI Descenso Villa de Estepona Las pruebas ciclistas llevan gran tiempo en nuestra localidad celebrándose, y desde varios años la modalidad de BTT o Bicicleta de Montaña está cobrando gran auge, puesto que se han celebrado desde Campeonatos de España, de Andalucía, Circuitos provinciales, etc. Este mes de noviembre tendrá lugar en Estepona los días 21 y 22 en el marco incomparable del Parque Municipal de Los Pedregales la Copa de Andalucía de Bicicleta de Montaña (BTT) “VI Descenso Villa de Estepona” El Sábado 21 tendrán lugar los entrenamientos oficiales desde las 14 hasta las 18:00 horas y el Domingo 22 se celebrará a las 10:30 horas la primera manga y a las 12:30 horas la segunda manga, para a continuación proceder a la entrega de trofeos. Este campeonato se desarrollará en las modalidades de elite, su-23, master 30, veteranos, junior, cadete, feminas e infantil, esta última a modo de promoción deportiva y está organizado por el club local Radikal Bike Racing y la Delegación de Deportes del Ayuntamiento de Estepona contando con la colaboración de la Federación Andaluza de Ciclismo

Mountain Biking - Andalucian Cup, VI Estepona Downhill Trial Cycling is very popular in Estepona, and in recent years mountain biking has seen an ever increaing number of participants, with national and region competitions regularly taking place.

This 21st and 22nd November sees the Los Pedregales park playing host to the VI Estepona Downhill, part of the Andalucian Cup circuit.

On Saturday, 21st November qualifying will take place from 2 pm to 6 pm followed on Sunday, 22nd November, by the first run which will commence at 10.30 am with

the second run at 12.30 pm after which there will be an awards ceremony.

Participants will compete in a number of categories including elite, senior, junior, women and youth.

The event, which is organised by local club Radikal Bike Racing, Estepona Sports Department in collaboration with the Andalucian Cycling Federation, is part of the Andalucian Cup which is considered the most prestigious competition of its type in the region, and attracts some of Andalucia’s top cyclists.

Juventud abre el plazo de inscripción en el III Concurso de creación musical “Artistas jóvenes” “Young Artists” Music competition El Ayuntamiento de Estepona, a través de la delegación de Juventud, informa que está abierto el plazo de inscripción para participar en el III Concurso de creación musical “Artistas jóvenes”.

Todos aquellos grupos musicales que quieran presentarse al concurso deberán inscribirse en la delegación de Juventud, sita en la Plaza de Las Flores. Los grupos deberán presentar una maqueta con los temas originales.

El comité comarcal del Partido Andalucista se reune para debatir sobre la grave crisis económica de Estepona El Comité Comarcal del Partido Andalucista de la Costa del Sol Occidental ha mantenido la primera reunión de trabajo con el objeto de analizar la difícil situación por la que atraviesa Estepona, tras el caso de corrupción urbanística objeto de la operación Astapa y las fuertes secuelas económicas agravadas por la crisis económica actual y el paro que ha aumentado de forma drástica en nuestro municipio.

Lina Rivas -secretaria local de la agrupación andalucista de Estepona y vicesecretaria comarcal del partido-explicó ante los representantes comarcales y el secretario provincial, Salvador López, las enormes dificultades económicas y de gestión que afronta el Equipo de Gobierno Municipal, asfixiado por la labor obstruccionista de la oposición que lidera el Partido Popular de Estepona, con los apoyos necesarios de los concejales no adscritos.

Rivas detalló la aplicación del último acuerdo plenario por la que los concejales del Equipo de Gobierno han recibido 900 € de salario, tras la aplicación del último acuerdo plenario

en la que los populares esteponeros acordaron esta bajada de los sueldos mientras ellos se congelaban el sueldo. Asimismo enumeró las dificultades económicas del Gobierno Municipal para garantizar el pago de los servicios esenciales, los gastos corrientes y, sobre todo, del pago de las nóminas de los empleados municipales que cada mes ronda los cuatro millones de euros.

El secretario comarcal del Partido Andalucista, Cristóbal González, concejal andalucista de Fuengirola se mostró muy preocupado por la crítica situación del municipio a la vez que mostró su disposición a colaborar con nuestro grupo municipal del Partido Andalucista de Estepona en iniciativas que permitan desbloquear la gestión de los gobernantes de nuestro municipio que se encuentran en minoría numérica.

Por su parte, el secretario provincial de la formación, Salvador López, aclaró que está informado al detalle de toda esta situación por parte de la secretaria local, así como por los numerosos encuentros que mantiene en Estepona con

miembros del Comité Local, así como con responsables del Gobierno Municipal. En este sentido, López reiteró que -tal como ha expresado en numerosas ocasiones- en Estepona sería fundamental hacer un gobierno de concentración de todas las fuerzas políticas con concejales que no estuvieran imputados en Astapa. “Se trata de un ejercicio de responsabilidad política y de generosidad que el Partido Popular de Estepona debería anteponer a otros fines partidistas”, dice el secretario provincial quien además añade que los populares prefieren rentabilizar políticamente esta situación de debilidad del Gobierno Municipal.

Sin embargo, la concejala andalucista manifestó su propósito de mantenerse al frente del Grupo Municipal representando las siglas del partido a pesar del estrangulamiento al que nos somete el Partido Popular aprovechando la desventaja numérica” dijo Rivas, quien añadió que defenderá siempre los intereses de los vecinos de Estepona.

She Aalso listed the local government’s difficulties in securing payment for essential services, running costs and, above all, for payment of the municipal employees’ wages each month which amount to around four million euros.

The district secretary of the Partido Andalucista, Christopher Gonzalez, a councillor in Fuengirola was very concerned about the critical situation facing the municipality, while at the same time expressed his willingness to work with the local PA on initiatives to enable the minority government to function.

Meanwhile Salvador Lopez, the provincial secretary for education, said he is kept informed in detail of this whole picture by the local secretary and through the

many meetings that it holds in Estepona with members of the Local Committee as well as the municipal government. In this sense, Lopez reiterated that “as stated on numerous occasions that it is essential that all councillors who are not implicated in the Astapa case should cooperate”, he went on “this is an exercise in political responsibility, and the PP should put the needs of the people above politics, instead of exploiting the weakness of the municipal government to its own ends”.

However the PA councillor expressed her intention to work to relieve the stranglehold that the PP has on the council, and that she would always defend the interests of the people of Estepona.

Mayoress of Manilva to meet with El Hacho presidents The Mayoress of Manilva, Antonia Muñoz, is to hold a meeting at the La Duquesa Golf Club with presidents of the communities which make up the El Hacho Urban Concervation Authority (EUC) in order to address a number of pressing issues.

The main point will be El Hacho’s social security debt of 580,137 euros and the 160,000 euro debt

to the tax authorities.

In addition the mayoress will endeavour to resolve the economic shortfall between the area’s budget and its available funds.

According to the mayoress it is vital that this meeting reaches some decisions and be a positive turning point to give viability and solvency to the El Hacho entity.

She went on to add that the Town Hall will do all it can to help solve the problems of this zone which includes Puerto de la Duquesa, not only because it is an important part of Manilva’s tourist infrastructure but because of its hundreds of residents, but it will require everyone’s cooperation and effort to solve this ongoing problem.

El Manilveño Juan Carlos Morejón representará a la provincia en la Gala de Mister España 09 El próximo 28 de noviembre de 2009, el Princesa Yaiza Suite Hotel Resort 5*L de Lanzarote, albergará el evento de belleza masculina más importante de nuestro país, la Gala de Mister España 2009 que contará con la representación por Málaga del manilveño Juan Carlos Morejón.

Los candidatos llegarán a la isla el próximo día 23 de noviembre. Una vez allí, además de ensayar para la preparación de la gala final, disfrutarán de todas las maravillas que ofrece la ‘Isla Mítica’, la más antigua de las Islas Canarias, declarada Reserva de la Biosfera por la UNESCO. Además de uno de los protagonistas de este acto, el madrileño José Manuel Montalvo, Mister España 2008, quien entregará el título a su sucesor el próximo

28 de noviembre; a la Gala de Mister España 2009 asistirán numerosos rostros conocidos del panorama social español.

Anglo Wines What is Wine?

Wine is an alcoholic beverage typically made of fermented grape juice. The natural chemical balance of grapes is such that they can ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients. Wine is produced by fermenting crushed grapes using various types of yeast.

Yeast consumes the sugars found in the grapes and converts them into alcohol. Different varieties of grapes and strains of yeasts are used depending on the type of wine being produced.

Anglo Wines ¿Que es el vino?

El vino es una bebida obtenida de la uva (variedad Vitis vinifera) mediante la fermentación alcohólica de su mosto o zumo. La fermentación se produce por la acción metabólica de levaduras que transforman los azúcares del fruto en alcohol etílico y gas en forma de dióxido de carbono. El azúcar y los ácidos que posee la fruta Vitis vinifera hace que sean suficientes para el desarrollo de la fermentación.

No obstante, el vino es una suma de un conjunto de factores ambientales: clima, latitud, altitud, horas de luz, etc. Aproximadamente un 66% de la recolección mundial de la uva se dedica a la producción vinícola; el resto es para su consumo como fruta. A pesar de ello el cultivo de la vid cubre tan sólo un 0,5% del suelo cultivable en el mundo. El cultivo de la vid se ha asociado a lugares con un clima mediterráneo.

Se da el nombre de «vino» únicamente al líquido resultante de la fermentación alcohólica, total o parcial, del zumo de uvas, sin adición de ninguna sustancia. En muchas legislaciones se considera sólo como vino a la bebida fermentada obtenida de Vitis vinifera, pese a que se obtienen bebidas semejantes de otras variedades como la Vitis labrusca, Vitis rupestris, etc. El conocimiento de la ciencia particular de la elaboración del vino se denomina enología (sin considerar los procesos de cultivo de la vid). La ciencia que trata tan sólo de la biología de la vid, así como de su cultivo, se denomina ampelología.

Wine has a rich history dating back to around 6000 BC and is thought to have originated in areas now within the borders of Georgia and Iran. Wine probably appeared in Europe at about 4500 BC in what is now Bulgaria and Greece, and was very common in ancient Greece, Thrace and Rome. Wine has also played an important role in religion throughout history. The Greek god Dionysos and the Roman equivalent Bacchus represented wine, and the drink is also used in Christian and Jewish ceremonies such as the Eucharist (also called the Holy Communion) and Kiddush.

EXPOSICIÓN - EDWARD BURBIDGE El artista Edward Burbidge empezó a pintar a la temprana edad de 10 años. La primera beca se la otorgaron a los 16 años de edad y se marchó a estudiar al Rotherham Art College en Yorkshire. Se especializó en la pintura en acuarela.

Finalmente su creación artística le surgió de manera accidental cuando descubrió una nueva dimensión en sus pensamientos y visión; esto le permitió empezar a pintar, lo que el llama abstracto “Iawhashy”.

Según él, cada pintura tiene un trocito de magia en su creación.

Edward Burbidge nos presenta su colección de obras en una exposición que estará abieractividades ta en el Centro Cultural Padre Manuel del 30 de noviembre al 23 de diciembre.

by Edward Burbridge The artist Edward Burbidge began painting at the age of ten. Gaining a scholarship

at 16 years of age he went to study at the Rotherham Art College in Yorkshire where he specialised in watercolours.

His particular artistic style came about when he discovered a new dimension in thought and vision, that allowed him to start painting, what he calls abstract “Iawhashy” in which, according to him, each painting has a bit of magic in its creation.

Edward Burbidge presents his collection of works in an exhibition that will open at Estepona’s Centro Cultural Padre Manuel from 30th November to 23rd December.

Éste es un adjetivo que ellos desconocen y de ahí precisamente les viene el éxito y los fans.

Este trío sevillano vuelve a subirse a las tablas para escenificar “No hay bar que por bien no venga”. En la obra, utilizando la misma técnica clown que en el resto de sus espectáculos, nos harán reír con la narración de historias sin sentido. En este caso los diálogos son surrealistas mientras tratan de

explicar la verdadera historia del Rey Arturo, la divertida vida de un viejo profesor de artes marciales o de escenificar sin tapujos la vida de un acróbata ruso.

Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva

Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice once again celebrates Light a Light in memory of our loved ones on Friday 11th December at 6.00 p.m. at the Hospice Centre.

Light a Light is a special tribute to a loved one when a light and candle is dedicated to them for a minimum donation of €10. The Hospice building is decorated with lights which are switched on by our President and Founder, Joan Hunt O.B.E., and every one of those lights is in memory of someone special.

On this special evening, we will enjoy listening to choirs singing Christmas Carols and the wonderful sound of Bell Ringers.

There will also be a raffle and we can enjoy eating home made cakes and other savoury delights. Further items on sale will

Volunteers Needed The great thing about living on the Costa del Sol is that one’s life expectancy is likely to increase. As one enjoys those extra years there is no doubt that problems can arise in things like mobility, or health, or sight etcetera. The charity Age Concern exists to give advice, information and help to older people so that they can get the most out of life and feel part of the society in which they live.

Those people who seek our services are looked after by volunteers who are prepared to work with older people in the community. Our current group of volunteers are becoming stretched as our work load increases. Being a volunteer in the community, or helping in our charity shop in Estepona, is very rewarding.

Besides giving something back to society the act of helping another human being is satisfying and to hear the thanks of others quite humbling.

All the cost-free care provided is for both the patient and the family.

CAP presents its forthcoming events Club Charity and Pleasure is a social, nonprofit organisation based in El Paraiso, Estepona. They meet at 11 am each Wednesday morning at El Paraiso Country Club for coffee; their weekly activities include bridge, whist, bowls, art classes and Spanish lessons for beginners.

Other events and excursions include visits to the theatre and exhibitions, lunches and dinners at different venues along the coast, mystery trips, etc. Their full programme of events is published in their free quarterly magazine and regularly updated online.

Apart from enjoying themselves CAP raises money for local charities: mainly Aprona, Aspandem, Cudeca and Los Claveles.

NADFAS presents: Antoni Gaudí Sinner or Saint?

Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) broke the bounds of architectural convention (as well as his clients’ budgets) to create decorative buildings which looked more like clay than bricks and mortar. They are now a great tourist attraction. More than 80 years after his death, work continues on his multispired ‘Sagrada Familia’ in Barcelona for which, typically, he left no plans.

Join us on the 15th December 2009 at 11.00 am for this presentation by Mr van Hensbergen, a new NADFAS speaker, who studied at the Courtauld Institute. He is acknowledged in Spain as an expert on Gaudí (author of Gaudí – the biography (2002) and on Guernica. Other publications include In the Kitchens of Castile Art Deco. leads tours to Spain and the USA. We have some very exciting special events and trips coming up. On the 25th November members can visit five different religious centres in Gibraltar. On the 8th December we are planning a Christmas Hog Roast lunch at Cortijo La Vizcaronda and directly after the lecture on 15th December there will be a Christmas Lunch & Bazaar.

Vets Corner The Cost of Keeping a Pet Keeping a pet means an increase in the family budget of anywhere between 60 to 120 € a month, according to a recent study in Barcelona. A measure of this cost increase in the pet care market may be attributed to the the growth of 174% in under the last 10 years. The increasing costs of professional grooming services and the sale of pet accessories are cited as leading factors in this surge. Vast changes have come about in the development of specialized new businesses related to pet care and maintenance, despite the economic crisis.

Experts in business predicted this based on the growth potential in Spain with a population of 23 million pets.

Taking advantage of this there was a recent trade fair in Barcelona which included a fashion show with presentations from known companies, including a new collection for

animals by Adolfo Dominguez.

According to some of the latest data available, from 2007, principle areas of interest in the pet animal care sector that take the lions’ share of the market are nutrition, health, accessories, services, and breeders. Data compiled by the organisers of the fair speak of the movement of some 1,909 million euros, Catalunya being responsible for 30% of this business followed by Valencia with 13.4% and Andalucia with a 12% market share.

The area with the greatest demand is fashion accessories for animals, such as: clothing of all types, complementary items like leads, carriers, hats, raincoats, footwear, sunglasses, or jewellery.

According to the market research company

this sector, which includes designer firms, accounts for the movement of over 269 million euros annually which represents a 13.6% market share!

Health is the other great commercial area. At the present time Spain has some 27,000 veterinarians, only one third of these, however, specialise in small animal care. According to data compiled

by Veterindustria, veterinary hospitals/ clinics turnover on average about 250,000 euros annually, while the sale of pharmacological products, vaccines, nutritional supplements, additives, and premixed medications reached a figure of about 368 million euros in 2007.

Watching your pet’s diet this Christmas The holiday season is fast approaching,

with it lots of savoury delights, just as we need to take care in what we indulge in so should we be aware of what treats our four legged family members are feasting on as well! Be careful with overdoing the table scraps, there is a tendency to be generous with turkey skins, cracklings or other fatty cast off bits, they may lead to serious pancreatic problems. Meat, poultry, and fish bones are definite items to avoid. A carnivore is a meat eater not a bone eater; sooner or later their consumption will cause problems that could be fatal. Lluvia local de Octubre Este día de otoño me ha sorprendido la lluvia, a la que doy la bienvenida (elixir, mineral de cielo en cada gota), pues la sequía es cada año mayor. El tiempo seco y caluroso, en estos momentos es húmedo y tibio. Voy caminando desde casa de mi madre, que vive a las afueras del pueblo, en una vivienda construida por mi hermana para mis padres, hasta la mía. Antes de llegar paso por unos cañaverales, que aún quedan sin limpiar en el camino que llamamos de los Baños Romanos, allí encontraron el cuerpo muerto de Jacinto, desnudo completamente, que una fatiga de alcohol y droga, después de una fiesta con los amigos, hizo que el infeliz muriera. Nadie supo por qué apareció en esas espesuras de caña y zarza. Quien lo mató y lo colocó allí, enmudeció, miserable aposento del verdugo que calla y tranquiliza su conciencia. Veo el gran edificio donde un centro comercial abrió sus puertas hace algunos años y, muy cerca, otras dos grandes construcciones, una dedicada a la venta de materiales de construcción y la otra, que tan de moda se ha puesto, un comercio dedicado a la ecología, por la que apuesto, que dicho sea de paso, a veces, sus productos son abusivos por muy ecológicos que sean. También hay un concesionario de coches usados, de primera, segunda o vete a saber las manos que han conducido esos vehículos, eso sí, casi siempre resultan más baratos. La lluvia me susurra en la cara, me aprueba y me dejo abrazar por ella felizmente, me comunica, me calma. Paso por una huerta y veo a uno de los pocos hombres que se dedican a cultivar verduras. En la puerta de una casucha, se ve un letrero que dice que se venden huevos, apio, acelgas y batatas. Me detengo y contemplo a ese campesino viejo, inclinado, labrando cebollas, en su huerto sagrado, quizás ahora demasiado cerca de la civilización, pronto se elevarán allí nuevos edificios,

centros comerciales, y ojalá construyan una universidad y un hospital amplio para las exigencias urbanas. Todo esto que veo, también lo contemplo de otro modo y, sobre todo, lo percibo como fragmentos que formarán una unidad, una gota de lluvia sobre millones y, después, en ese concierto, universos distintos que siguen su fuerza para lograr la unanimidad en el todo.

Quizás estos pensamientos son para un pueblo diseminado que la lluvia me hace sentir en la totalidad de su tronco, de la paternidad que enraíza culturas diversas mezcladas con la propia. Ya en el pueblo, un vecino se cruza y dice que es una bendición de Dios lo que está cayendo; otro se queja; otra mujer, ligera, con pañuelo gris en la cabeza, se precipita contra el tabique de la cafetería y cae, pero se levanta de inmediato, excepto yo, nadie parece haberse dado cuenta; un viejo pescador dice que la lluvia no es ya lo que era, ni el solano, ni el pueblo, ni nada, que todo ha cambiado, y su hijo le dice que se está volviendo un viejo fanfarrón, pero el anciano insiste diciendo que hay demasiado revuelo en el pueblo y que todo está desordenado, sin embargo, qué tranquilos parecen estar esos ejecutivos en desayuno que se alarga hasta el almuerzo desahogado e importante, quizás hablen de algún proyecto de futuro.

Resulta curioso cómo oigo a esa gente, porque cuando llueve la gente habla con la voz más alta, o eso me parece a mí. Yo pienso que el pueblo conoce la mística del agua, almas resbalando en aceras del viento. Este pueblo, es ejemplo claro de especulación turística, una emigración solicitada que, con cierta disciplina política y funcionaria, conviva con nuestra cultura, y nos enseñen, y aprendan ellos también.

Todos somos adoptados por el pueblo, hijos del tiempo de un municipio que lleva siglos buscando libertad y armonía. Dicen que mente y corazón han de separar sus correspondientes visillos, en la medida

BOGUS GAS MEN TARGET ELDERLY Three times in recent days young men who identified themselves as gas company technicians demanded that they be let into elderly residents’ homes in the Punta Almina condominium in Sabinillas, to ‘inspect’ the gas installations.

In the first incident involving a couple who had just arrived on holiday, the men ripped out the metal piping to the kitchen gas heater then demanded €250 for spare parts. When the couple refused to pay, the men left and the hapless couple had to find a plumber to repair the damage – this late in the evening.

The men then tried their tricks on a lady who sensibly refused to let them in. Never the less they banged on her door but

eventually left.

In the worst and most wicked incident, the men conned €250 out of a couple but a neighbour was nearby who managed to retrieve the money and send the men packing. They returned the next day however; not only did they get the elderly and infirm man to pay them again they wrecked a cupboard in the garden where the gas bottle was stored.

There seems to be no answer to the menace of bogus gas men, except to advise that when they call and become aggressive, threaten to call the police.

This of course is not easy, especially for frightened elderly folks who cannot speak Spanish.

La lluvia, cada vez más débil, me sigue seduciendo, ese chubasco alimentó cortésmente este día de otoño, tiene tanto que contar, sin embargo, al atardecer, me refiere historias que empapan de silencio toda la calle, como si una ciudadanía se quedara adormecida, una memoria que brotara más tarde en su coexistir con el universo, cuando el sol, en un registro, sugiere en sus rayos débiles la afinidad con un crepúsculo que desea seguir contando con la lluvia de la noche, almidonando nubes, mientras el pueblo sigue en su quehacer, y continúa narrando sus historias, y finalmente cada uno a su noche y a sus sueños.

Medioambiente pone en marcha el programa de senderos 2009-2010 Ayuntamiento de Manilva, ha comunicado que se pone en marcha un año más, el programa de senderos correspondiente a la temporada de invierno.

De esta manera el 22 de noviembre se llevará a cabo el sendero Manilva-San Enrique y el 17 de enero, SabinillasCanuto de los molinos.

Los participantes deberán ser mayores de 14 años o tendrán que ir acompañados por un familiar.

La condición física deberá ser la apropiada a las distancias y dificultades de los recorridos a realizar pudiendo denegarse el acceso a las mismas por consideraciones técnicas de la propia organización.

El precio por ruta es de tres euros. Los pagos se realizarán a través de la cuenta de Unicaja nº. 2103 0153 23 0230000044, de la

Delegación de Medioambiente y posteriormente serán comunicados a la concejalía.

El plazo de reservas o solicitudes permanecerá abierto hasta el miércoles previo a la realización de cada ruta. No se admitirán los pagos no comunicados a la Delegación de Medio Ambiente.Se admitirá un máximo de cincuenta plazas por grupo y ruta.

Las salidas se llevarán a cabo a las 9 de la mañana.

La delegación dispondrá autobuses para las rutas que lo requieran.

Manilva autumn programme of walks The autumn programme of hikes, organised by Manilva’s environment department, continues this coming Sunday, 22nd November with the ManilvaSan Enrique route; and on the 17th January by the SabinillasCanuto de los molinos route.

Participants must be over 14 years of age or accompanied by a family member, and be in sufficient physical condition for the distance and level of difficulty.

The price for each route is 3 euros

per person and should be paid into the Enviroment Department’s Unicaja account 2103 0153 23 0230000044.

You can book your place from the Wednesday prior to each walk, and there are a maximum of 50 places for each route.

Departures are from 9 in the morning and transport is available where required.

U Estepona CF chalks up vital win Union Estepona C.F. gained a much needed victory last Sunday, beating AD Ceuta at home at the Francisco Muñoz Pérez stadium in front of over 2,200 fans.

Estepona started the day second from bottom in Group IV of Spain’s Segunda B Division, and had only chalked up one win in the last 6 matches, making this a crucial match, both for their fight to stay in the league and for player morale.

Despite an early own goal

by Velázquez a determined Estepona went into the half time break with a 3-1 advantage, and even though the visitors managed to pull one back in the second

half, Estepona sealed the victory with a fourth, fifteen minutes from the final whistle.

Other games in the division also went Estepona’s way, lifting Estepona out of the drop zone and putting them sixth from bottom.

En este Programa pueden participar las siguientes personas: Edad: A partir de 14 años; los menores de edad deben adjuntar una autorización de sus tutores e ir acompañados por un adulto.

Condicion fisica: Ésta debe ser la adecuada a la dificultad y distancia del itinerario a realizar.

Netball The Manilva Netball Club, formed last month, has proven very popular, and has already put together a team which took on the ladies from the Marbella Netball Club, which was a good experience for the team.

The Manilva Netball Club will also be competing in a mini tournament on Saturday, 5th December.

The club meets every Tuesday from 5 pm and every Saturday from 12 noon at the Basketball Courts, Marina de Casares. The organisers are currently are trying to secure an indoor court.

Ross Fisher gana el Volvo Mundial Match Play en Finca Cortesín Ross Fisher se ha proclamado vencedor del Volvo Mundial Match Play en Finca Cortesín al ganar a Anthony Kim por 4 & 3. El inglés, de 28 años de edad ganó el premio más grande de su carrera, cobrando un cheque por valor de 750.000 € y exhibiendo una gran fortaleza en la final, -sólo ha firmado un bogey en 33 hoyos-, demostrando con hechos la gran verdad de sus palabras previas a la vuelta definitiva: “este formato me gusta y me va. Juego agresivo y a la vez con cabeza”.

Fisher es el noveno debutante que gana en la historia del torneo, y se apunta su tercer título en el Circuito Europeo tras el KLM Open en 2007 y el Abierto de Europa en 2008. Este año llevaba 4 Top Ten, incluyendo un quinto puesto en el US Open, un segundo en el BMW PGA Championship, y un cuarto

los próximos días 3, 4 y 5 de Diciembre el XV Campeonato Andaluz de Fútbol-7 de Discapacitados Intelectuales.

A partir de noviembre se ponen en marcha las clases de esgrima en Manilva La delegación de deportes del Ayuntamiento de Manilva, ha alcanzado un acuerdo con el profesor de esgrima, Alberto Cerrada, por el que los vecinos de nuestra localidad podrán recibir clases de este deporte.

Estas se desarrollarán en una de las salas del monumento del Castillo de la Duquesa.

El edil de deportes, ha informado que ya esta abierto el plazo de preinscripción

para todos aquellas personas interesadas, que podrán dirigirse a la delegación de deportes en plaza Martín Carpena en Manilva o al edificio de usos múltiples en Sabinillas, como explicaba el profesor, Alberto Cerrada.

Las clases se impartirán todos los miércoles a partir del mes de Noviembre de 6 a 7 de la tarde para los niños y de 7 a 8 de la tarde para los adultos.

El fútbol femenino de la escuela del Arsenal sigue creciendo tras la incorporación de las niñas del colegio Internacional de Sotogrande a los entrenamientos Desde que el fútbol femenino comenzara a desarrollarse en la escuela del Arsenal hace poco más de dos meses, el proyecto no ha parado de ir creciendo y de obtener sus frutos. Cuando pocos veían futuro en el propósito de desarrollar el fútbol entre jóvenes y niñas de la comarca, la escuela del Arsenal no sólo cuenta a día de hoy con más de una treintena de niñas entrenando en el colegio de Puertoblanco en Algeciras sino que ha comenzado un entrenamiento específico de tecnificación todos los Lunes, siendo las jóvenes del colegio Sotogrande Internacional las protagonistas del mismo.

Hasta el momento, la escuela del Arsenal llevaba a cabo entrenamientos todos los lunes en el campo “La Unión” de Guadiaro con una presencia puramente masculina. A partir de ahora niñas y jóvenes también podrán disfrutar de este privilegio y han comenzado a entrenar de

4:30 pm a 6pm de la tarde, justo antes de la sesión masculina. Chris Williams se ha encargado de llevar a cabo el entrenamiento en el que ha realizado tanto ejercicios de técnica como de táctica, haciendo ejercicios variados donde se ha podido ver el talento de las jóvenes. Sara, coordinadora del mismo, ya está trabajando en la celebración de un torneo de fútbol femenino a celebrarse a finales de Noviembre y que pretende ser todo un referente para animar a niñas y jóvenes a unirse al deporte rey.

Women’s football continues to grow at Arsenal Soccer School with girls from Sotogrande International School joining training Since women’s football was introduced at San Roque’s Arsenal Soccer School just over two months ago, the project has really begun to take off.

When it was obvious little was being done to foster women’s soccer in the area, Arsenal Soccer School decided to develop this side of the game, and not only have they some 30 girls in training from the Colegio de Puertoblanco school in Algeciras but have now introduced training sessions for girls from the Sotogrande International School

on Mondays.

Up to now, the school’s training sessions, every Monday evening at the “La Union” football ground in Guadiaro, have been a purely male affair, but from now on girls can also enjoy this privilege and have started training from 4:30 pm to 6 pm in the evening, just before the boys’ session, with experienced trainer Chris Williams responsible for conducting the training that provides both technical and tactical exercises, to assess the talent of the young women. A keen interest, and an

eagerness to work have been a feature of these training sessions which shows that the women’s game has little to envy of their male counterparts.

This new initiative is just one step closer to what is and will remain a major project for the future of the Arsenal school. Sara, the coordinator for women’s football is already working on a women’s football tournament to be held in late November which aims to encourage girls to take up the beautiful game.

Endesa discriminates against expatriate pensioners.

The main providers of energy to our homes have allowed a reduction in electricity charges to pensioners, widows and large families who meet a criterion. Many non Spanish who have approached their offices for this bono social have been told it is only for the Spanish resident. One pensioner was refused the application form and informed that “she would not understand it anyway” This is blatant discrimination and would not be accepted as legal if presented to the European parliament. Telefonica who are offering a similar reduction for pensioners, appear to be honouring their proposal, allowing European resident pensioners to submit a claim form.
