Welcome to the May issue of the increasingly popular Resident Plus. Last month’s April issue enjoyed over 30,000 views and we received some great feedback. From the outset we have aimed to bring out this supplement on the 1st of the month, but this issue we have had to delay until the 6th of May due to the Spanish electoral laws which forbid any political campaigning until midnight on the 5th May. As you will see as you read through this issue that would have left some serious holes in our content. So now the gloves are off and the campaigning gets underway in earnest. You will see from our cover photograph that the political supporters wasted no time in getting their posters up, and were ready with pot and pastebrush in hand as the church bells chimed midnight. Over the coming fortnight they will all be touting for your vote, and we would not presume to tell you who should receive your ballot. All that we would ask is that if you have the right to vote you should ensure that you cast it on Sunday 22 May. It is only by doing this that the foreign community will be taken seriously amongst the local community. Don’t forget Don’t Vote; Don’t Care; Don’t Complain.

San Roque’s IV Gastronomic Marathon gets under way
San Roque has launched its IV Gastronomic Marathon which is designed to encourage people to broaden their knowledge of the boroughs bars and restaurants whilst at the same time boosting the economy in the hostelry sector. There are some 59 establishments participating in the marathon, catering for all tastes and pockets. To take part diners must enjoy a minimum of 2 meals (breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner or tapas) at any of the associate restaurants or bars from 5th until 20th May 2011. When paying the bill, you can either: 1. Fill in a leaflet with your personal details, the 2 codes of establishments (ask at the bar or restaurant you visit) and leave the leaflet at one of the participating establishments, the Tourist Office, the Town Hall or the village council offices. 2. Send us an e-mail to: turismo@sanroque.es with your personal details and the two codes. 3. Send us a SMS (text message) with your personal details and the two codes to the following number: 661 868 384. 4. Join “Turismo San Roque” on Facebook and upload 1 or 2 pictures of you eating or of the dishes you eat. A prize-giving ceremony will be broadcasted live on the municipal TV channel Canal San Roque after the event ends. The prize-winners will be announced on our website and will be contacted personally. The Junta de Andalucia has introduced its ‘green tax’ on plastic bags, five months later than originally planned. The law, which came into force on Friday, 29 April, places a levy of 5 cents on all single use plastic bags issued by shops and supermarkets, with the tax rising to 10 cents next year. The introduction of the tax was delayed due to an outcry by the retail industry which demanded more time to make arrangements for this introduction. Ark Royal could become latest tourist attraction for Gibraltar
A report in the UK press has announced that an international consortium is planning a bid for the aircraft carrier Ark Royal which was recently decomissioned and facing an uncertain future. The ship is currently moored in Portsmouth where the MoD has invited tenders from interested parties. If a buyer cannot be found this former Royal Navy flagship will face the ignomy of being scrapped. If the Gibraltar bid is successful the Arl Royal will brought to Gibraltar where it will turned into a museum to the Navy and Fleet Air Arm. The Resident plus www.theresident.es

Manilva’s Environment Department has announced that work will begin shortly on transferring the high voltage power lines at the Pueblo Mexicano urbanisation from their pylons to underground conduits. Councillor Salvador Zotano stated that the action was being taken to reduce the dangers posed by the cables and to improve the image of the area. GIBRALTAR

Manilva’s Foreign Residents Department is organising a trip to the famous and spectacular Patios Festival in Cordoba on Wednesday, 11 May. Cordoba’s Patios Festival, is celebrated every year since 1964 and has become famous around the world. Locals

Two Spanish Nationals have appeared before the Magistrates Court charged with possession, unlawful transportation and knowingly concerned in the exportation of a commercial quantity of cigarettes. As a result of ongoing risk-profiling exercises by Customs Officers, R.A.P.B., a Spanish national resident in Chiclana and Y.G.M. also Spanish and resident in La Linea, were arrested on Good Friday as they were about to leave Gibraltar In a motor caravan. A search of the caravan revealed a total of 500,000 cigarettes (50 master cases) stored throughout lockers, cabinets and shower room. Both persons were remanded in custody until their appearance yesterday in court, where they pleaded guilty to the charges. The Stipendiary Magistrate imposed a fine of £25,000 each to be paid forthwith, or in default, sentenced each to 180 days in prison.

Manilva International Family Day On Saturday May 7 Manilva’s Foreign Residents Department welcomes everyone to the International Family Day celebrating the local community and its 70 different nationalities. in collaboration with the Association of Western Costa del Sol Municipalities (Mancomunidad) and Manilva town Hall the event begins at 11 am and carries on throughout the day until 10 pm. The event will be held in the Parque el Huerto next to the Castle in Castillo de la Duquesa, and starting at 11 am there will be a wide range of children’s activities, entertainment and competitions including face painting, sack race, balloon modelling and a magician.
The local authorities will be offering visitors the opportunity to sample traditional Andalucian pastries and at 2.30 pm there will be a giant paella for everyone to enjoy. During the day there will be a number of stands representing various nationalities who will be offering examples of their traditional cuisine and culture. From 4 pm onwards there will be an extensive programme of entertainment starting with the ASABAM music group, and including singers, performance by the Iplacea Spanish Dance Academy and culminating with a concert of World Music by the group Etnobabu.
Artists’ Market
At the same time as the International Family Day you can also enjoy the next edition of Manilva’s International Artists’ Market which is held on the first Saturday of each month and this month will feature the work of over 40 artists from across the region. How to vote by post if you are planning to be out of your area on the 22nd May The postman will hand over to you PERSONALLY the documentation and will ask you to confirm your identity (ID card, passport, residence) If you are absent, he will leave a note asking you to collect the documentation at the post office. Again this is something that you will have to do personally.
The Spanish voting process gives you the opportunity to vote in the forthcoming local elections even if you are out of the area on the 22nd of May. HOW TO PROCEED You will have to ask personally in any post office for the form. An identity card is compulsory to show when requesting to vote by mail. The period is from the 29th March to the 12th May. Complete the form with the address where you would like to receive the documentation. It has to be an address in Spain, it cannot be sent abroad. Sign it and give it back to the post officer that will confirm your identity (your passport, residence or any ID card with a photograph will do). The post officer will stamp the form and will sent it by registered mail (free of charge) to the Oficina del Censo (Census Office) The Oficina del Censo will send to the address indicated in the above mentioned form the documentation to vote. This process started from the 25th of April.

Another envelope (bigger) addressed to your voting district (Mesa Electoral) Process as follows: • Choose the form of the political party you would like to vote for and insert it into the small white envelope, and close it. (DO NOT MARK THE PAPER IN ANY WAY ( NO X ) • Put this small envelope into the big envelope together with the certificate of being registered in the electoral census (Certificado). If you fail to insert this certificate your vote will not be valid. • Close the big envelope marked with the address of your electoral district (mesa Electoral). • Take it to any post office before the 17th of May to be sent by registered mail. This process is free of charge.

Estepona celebrates its patron saint - San Isidro Labrador Sunday, 8 May - Romeria From 8 am to 9.30 pm in San Isidro Park, Los Pedregales. 12 noon - Prayers and bellringing in the chapel followed by a petanque competition. 1.30 pm - Children’s procession around the chapel accompanied by the Ntra. Sra. de Los Remedios music group. 2.30 pm - Music and dancing to the group ‘La Cala’. 4 pm - Dance performance by the Isabel Ortega Dance Academy. 5 pm - Performance by the Monica Peña Dance Group. During the morning there will be children’s activities and in the afternoon guided tours of the Necrópolis Dolménica de Corominas visitor centre and museum. Estepona will be celebrating its Patron Saint, San Isidro Labrador,this month with a Romeria (pilgrimage) on the 8th May and the feria from the 11th to the 15th May. San Isidro Labrador, who incidentally is also Madrid’s patron, lived in Madrid during the 12th century when it was but a village, where he worked as a lowly farm labourer. He was always engrossed in prayer but according to legend his workload was taken on by angels so as to leave hin time for his devotions, must remember that one! The Romeria or pilgrimage is held at the Ermita San Isidro at the Las Pedregales park on Sunday, 8h May, and draws thousands of Esteponeros who come to the park to party and celebrate their patron saint with picnics, barbecues, and maybe a few drinks! Los Pedregales is at the foot of Los Reales, that’s the big mountain behind Estepona and can be reached via the Estepona-Casares road. The saint’s day San Isidro Labrador is actually celebrated on the 15th May, which this year falls on a Sunday, and this is traditionally accompanied by a feria with celebrations, competitions, processions throughout the town and a funfair at the fairground. This year’s feria runs from Wednesday 11th to Sunday the 15th when the feria will reach its finale with a firework display. Worth noting also is that Monday, 16th is a local holiday in Estepona so expect many of the shops and businesses to be closed.

The Duquesa Society of St. George held its annual St. George’s dinner dance on Thursday 21st April. The Society, which was formed in 2005, organises at least two events each year, the actual St. George’s celebration dinner dance which has been held for the last few years at Macues Restaurant in Duquesa Port, and a summer ball and barbecue which is held at the H10 Hotel in Estepona. Over the years, the organisers have managed to raise money from these events for charites such as Help the Heroes, Los Claveles Cancer charity, and has raised money to go towards the building of a school in Nepal for the orphans of Ghurka soldiers. For its main organisers, William Downes, commonly known

by those that frequent Duquesa Port as “Billy the Fish”, it was his last St. George’s dinner as Billy is leaving Spain to return to the UK to run a country inn called the Rose & Crown in Wiltshire. Billy moved to Spain approximately 10 years ago and opened “Billy’s Fish & Chips” in Duquesa Port. The current Mayor of Manilva, Antonia Munoz, was also in attendance at Thursday’s dinner dance as everyone showed their appreciation for all the hard work that Billy has put into the organising of the annual events and to wish Billy and his wife, Sandra, a safe journey back to England. Billy has handed over the future organisation of the events to another well known supporter, Dean Shelton.

Rosa Díaz, candidate for mayor for the political party ESTEPONA 2007, invites the Foreign Residents’ community of Estepona to the presentation of their electoral program. The candidate for mayor for Estepona 2007, Rosa Diaz, wants to integrate the foreign residents of Estepona to participate actively in the municipal elections which will take place on 22nd May 2011. During this meeting, Díaz will present the electoral programme of Estepona2007 for the coming four years. One of the priorities is the creation of the Foreign Resident Councilorship. In the year 2000, Rosa Díaz, then Mayor of Estepona, created the department of foreign residents, being a pioneer on the Costa del Sol. Other leading projects are: the creation of the Youth Club (a meeting place for young people of all nationalities), a Nature Observation Centre as well as the implementation of the Single Point of Contact. “The participation in this event is extremely important as all of the citizens living in Estepona, both foreign or Spanish residents are part of the community and hence, they need to get involved to ensure the well-being as well as the future of our children, the elderly, etc. We will welcome you with open arms because we will all benefit if we cooperate closely”, states Díaz. Estepona2007 is an independent political party that works for Estepona and its citizens. Rosa Díaz has a wide experience in local politics. She has been mayor of Estepona and Estepona2007 currently manages eight municipal departments such as Youth, Women, Culture, Heritage, Festivities and the of Foreign Residents` Department. Foreigners more important than ever in upcoming local elections
Dutch National Joins Partido Popular Casares in Mission to Make the Foreign Vote Count The 22nd of May is when local elections are held for all the municipalities of Andalucia. According to official statistics, almost 34% of residents in the municipality of Casares are foreigners; in Manilva, the figure is closer to 44%. These figures only reflect registered expatriates; estimates suggest that the true figure is probably closer to 50%. “Now more than ever, it’s time to make ourselves heard”, says Anita Schmidt, who has joined the Partido Popular standing in the local elections in Casares; a first for a Dutch national. Anita’s decision to get involved in local politics was borne out of her frustration that many expatriates still consider themselves interlopers, even though they live here permanently, pay their taxes here, support the local economy and in many cases educate their children here as well. “We have to stop thinking of ourselves as guests in another country. We are a permanent part of the community; our opinion is important and our vote counts”. The Partido Popular explicitly takes this into account in its manifest: • Partido Popular will ensure that all information from the town hall will be available in English: the town hall website, blog, Facebook as well

as all leaflets, announcements of activities, programmes, etc. We will improve our means of communication. We understand that not everyone listens to Radio Casares! We will promote bilingual nurseries and schools on the coast A bilingual summer camp for young people on the coast. Partido Popular acknowledges that the foreign residents of Casares come from diverse backgrounds; most will have unique expertise, skills and possibly contacts at home that may help our community prosper. We want to create an environment that utilises this knowledge and expertise: to help tourism grow; to create new companies and opportunities for employment; to transform our coast into an attractive and appealing
place to be. • We will create a forum in which everyone can participate and share their ideas. • We will actively invite those interested to participate in brainstorming and development sessions to create and facilitate new tourism activities, new services and new business opportunities. • We will organise a ‘cultural week’ that truly reflects all the different cultures present in our community. The voting process in Spain is fairly straight forward: How to Vote Registered voters receive a notice in the post confirming their right to vote along with their allocated polling station. On the 22nd of May, voters need to identify themselves with their passport and NIE at their assigned polling station. It’s then simply a matter of placing the envelope with the list (party) of choice in the ballot box. The envelope can be either from home (the participating parties deliver them to your home) or collected and completed at the polling station. Motoring - How desperate can we get? their vehicles onto Spanish plates but who have not paid the relevant UK etc. taxes as well. Many have sworn out a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) to the DVLA thinking that it only applies in the UK and they can still use their vehicles here without
Motoring correspondent and author of Motoring in Spain, Brian Deller, looks at the lengths people will go to get around motoring laws. We are, as we all know, in a financial crisis that is said to be the worst since the 1929 Stock Market Crash and like then it has spread throughout much of the World causing many hardships to us common folk and also a rise in fraudulent crimes as people try anyway to make income to either live, or to be rich without a lifetime of hard work. As a result, some people take shortcuts that seem inexpensive at the time to get them out of the legal messes they get themselves into by not learning the laws and then sticking to them. We read earlier this year of the couple, who were living in a caravan in Essex who over 4 years of running the scam were reported to have operated a fraud where expats who needed a current MOT certificate to keep their vehicles that were being used on the Continent especially here in Spain, legal in the UK. They have been caught and the report estimates that they took in a million pounds in those four years and also now own a luxury villa in Portugal (which will probably be confiscated if they are found guilty in the forthcoming court case). But most of us who take an interest know that there are many hundreds of resident expats who have deliberately not bothered to re-register
breaking that law. As I have advised before, sorry folks, any vehicles used within the EU must be legal in all aspects in the country of registration as well. They can be impounded if not. Now the driving licence scam once again raises its ugly head, the one where the perpetrators offer any one a driving licence of their choice even if they have been legally banned or not passed any driving test for the classifications. One such website openly states that “due to a glitch in the EU regulations� anyone who is resident in an EU country may use a driving licence from another EU country, (even if they have not visited that country and are not resident in it?) The information does not say which country is supplying the genuine driving licences but my research the last time seemed to indicate Hungary was the one.
So it would seem that the government department concerned there has employees who are selling stolen, genuine but fraudulent licences, and they are not cheap. Also we see adverts in the English language press here offering UK vehicle tax discs as well as (still) current MOT certificates by return post. It is not for me to criticise those whose moral standards allow them to cheat and pay the crooks that make these offers, but imagine the scene where after a serious road accident, the expat is asked by the Court to present his Eastern European driving licence as well as proof of his tax residency there for at least 183 days a year. The Courts are not stupid, and unlike the policeman at the roadside who is used to dealing with Spanish drivers’ problems and he/ she may not know of the scam, the Courts do and being found to not only NOT have a genuine driving licence as well as consequently driving without insurance, being charged for the costs of the Court appearance as well as the damages that may have been inflicted to other Third Parties, is it worth it? For all us legally set-up drivers, we are paying in our insurance premiums an amount to cover those who drive uninsured. If we suffer a lot of this fraud we end up paying more to cover the costs. It is like a stealth tax. As an example, take a look at www.123drivinglicence.com The web-site offer openly advises that you can buy a driving licence even if you have not passed the test or have been banned. What to do about it? There are still those of us who have a duty to report such criminal activities. But sadly far too many also who will take advantage of such offers such is the big drop in our moral standards since I was younger. Do you want to be on the same roads as big truck driver who has never taken a driving test? It is no good complaining when you are dead. Let us be safe out there. Costa Advice Bureau Spanish Lawyer wins first case on an action for a group of duped expatriates There is often bad press relating to the competence or goodwill of some lawyers in Spain. This bad publicity is unfortunately more than often justified, although credit must be given where it is due. We should also be made aware of the cases where lawyers have achieved favourable outcomes for their clients. I would like to shed light on one of these success stories that I firmly believe should not go unnoticed. The news is in relation to a Marbella lawyer and a recent and ongoing case where numerous home owners who had bought their dream homes in various Spanish provinces were happily contemplating a relaxed and problem free existence. This was not to be. The affected parties who were in the majority retired expatriates who had used their life savings to either purchase a property or had paid off their mortgages leaving their properties free of encumbrances. These same people had previously been approached by a team of unbeknown to them, unauthorised financial advisors who used scaremongering tactics and incorrect information to recommend to these unsuspecting families, that they should take out hefty loans on their homes to avoid paying excessive inheritance taxes. These taxes they were told would on the death of either or both partners leave little if anything for their spouses or children to inherit. With shocking tax figures being bandied around, couples were motivated into taking out a type of equity release on their homes. The deal went sour when an Icelandic bank went into receivership. Worrying letters were then received asking for the loans of often half a million euro and more to be repaid and that failure to do so would mean the loss of their homes and a legacy of a massive debt. The now highly celebrated Spanish lawyer took on this daunting case. Many were skeptical, they could not imagine that there was the slightest possibility that a case could be won against a major bank and also considering the size of the loans. The case which had been taken and fought in the Spanish courts has been triumphant with an extremely positive outcome for one of the families affected. The lawyer won the arguments put forward and the courts declared that the loan was null and void. This particular family will now keep their home and do not have to repay the loan. The judge also ruled that the plaintiffs are to receive twenty three thousand euro in compensation for the suffering and stress caused and demanded that the defendants cover the lawyers’ fees. A precedent has been set so now it must be considered that the others implicated in this matter will also receive a favourable result for their individual cases. . Congratulations are in order for this extremely professional and competent Spanish lawyer. Sharing this story, demonstrates that there are success stories reassuring the expatriate communities that cases can be won and that there are some exceptional lawyers in Spain. Involved in an argument in Spain? Imperative steps to take First piece of advice is to avoid any altercations wherever possible. If you are involved in any type of arguments especially those which result in any physical contact those concerned should be made aware of the legal implications and of the legal process that should be adhered to. Follow the motions necessary to avoid being taken to court as the defendant and more than likely The Resident plus www.theresident.es
find that you are landed with a large fine and costs for damages. If,m and you can be assured that if the person you had the disagreement with is local he will whether on the side or right or not be aware of the actions he must take. The police will most certainly be called and you will have to file a report at the police station. Do not for one moment considers that because you feel you are the innocent party, that there will be a satisfactory conclusion, regardless of what you are told you must not only make a statement but present a formal police complaint against the other party. IF there has been any serious name calling or physical contact you will more likely than not find a formal complaint with a date for a court appearance will be presented to you at your home. It is quite common that you will only be given few days notice to prepare for your court appearance. If you have received injuries no matter how minor, you must go the nearest health centre or emergency department and be tended to. You should also insist on a report of your injuries. This can be taken to your local police station or better still the local court house and a formal report against the aggressor lodged. Make sure to obtain copies of the complaint. Presenting witnesses if any is an advantage. There are often numerous situations where a dispute has occurred and an expatriate may believe the matter has been settled between the parties. Do not for one second be deluded and expect the matter to be reported to the police even if they were not called to the scene. Please take note of the difference in the Spanish legal system. The denunciante (complainant) and the denunciado (denounced) If you have been denounced, you are not as you may believe be the defendant which by definition alone means that you have the opportunity to defend yourself. Unfortunately if you appear as the denounced with no complaint by you against the plaintiff and no medical report you will almost certainly be found as the guilty party. For some confirmation of what this article is trying to describe to you, go to an English Spanish legal dictionary to see that the translation for ‘defendant’ is accused. Setting out on the King’s Highway

There are many ancient routes which criss-cross Europe, and one of the oldest is the Via Regia, a 2 thousand year old trade route connecting Spain’s Santiago de Compostela in the West with Kiev at its eastern end. Although thousands of years old, the Via Regia was declared a major cultural route by the European Union in 2006, connecting some eight countries namely Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and the Ukraine and covers over 6,000 kms. One of the cities on this route is Görlitz, in the German state of Saxony, which is celebrating this year 800 years since the first reference to this route as a Royal Highway.
As part of these celebrations Peter Ritz, a resident of Görlitz is setting out on horseback to ride the Via Regia from Spain to his hometown, a journey of around 4,000 miles. Peter is no stranger to such epic rides having clocked up some 40,000 kms over the past ten years since he gave up his job as an accountant, including a trip to Rome where he was presented to the Pope. Whilst not trekking Europe Peter Ritz works with horses in the theatre and film industry, recently working on such projects as ‘Inglorious Basterds’ and ‘The Reader’. As with all such expeditions the Via Regia Ride has been a long time in the planning, and Peter is backed by an experienced team of assistants, in particular the Horse Project’s managing director, Jana Hanke, who is responsible for coordinating the press and sponsors, and in the role of on-the-road support is Diego who will make sure that both horse and rider are well fed and watered as well as drive the support vehicle. A horse named Corvacero Apart from the human elements, the key member of the team is Corvacero, a 6 year-old pure bred Andalucian stallion who will be bearing Peter on this epic journey. Corvacero is from Estepona and was chosen for his strength of body and spirit. “To test the horses i would throw down a rubber snake at their feet” said Peter, “they all panicked and fled at the sight of the imitation snake apart from Corvacero, who calmly lifted his hoof and stamped on the reptile. I then knew that this was the horse for the task.” The plan is to ride three days then rest for one, this way the journey should take just under 6 months, with Peter and the team hoping to set off in the coming week.

The prog rock ‘supergroup’ ASIA to perform in Malaga next month
The four original members of the supergroup ASIA will perform live in concert in Malaga’s Sala Paris15 on the 18 June as part of their Omega Tour. Thirty years after it was first formed from members of some of the legendary bands of the 70s progressive rock movement, ASIA will be visiting Spain to present their latest album Omega. One of the first bands to be given the label ‘supergroup’ ASIA comprised Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Geoff Downes (The Buggles and Yes), Steve Howe (Yes), and John Wetton (King Crimson y Uriah Heep). The band’s launch in the early 80s coincided with the launch of MTV, a platform to which they were ideally suited and over the next few years ASIA enjoyed phenomenal success, until tensions in the band led to a split in the mid 80s. The band came and went under numerous line-ups until in 2006 ASIA reformed with its original members. Omega is their second album since reforming, and was released in the Spring of 2010. Exhibition “Torero” in Estepona’s Stoa Gallery MARGRIT FULSCHER Only one work of art, “Half past Five” (“Las cinco y media”), in which the sculptor summarizes perfectly the spirit and the title of the exhibition, in a symbiotic language between surrealism and abstraction. She uses mixed techniques with predominance of various metals and terracotta. The iron from the ranches, Dali’s head turned into a clock with the hour, half past five, and the bullfighting costume jacket, elegantly articulated to show a bullfighter-warrior, a gladiator.
Bullfighter, universal word on which everyone has an opinion. This exhibition, compiled by Conchi Alvarez from STOA Art Gallery in Estepona until July, is the first of a series to try to show some of the visions and interpretations, sometimes conflicting, always complementary, which this National tradition causes. The start of the journey is the man, the bullfighter, the matador, the ordinary
fighter... the object of inspiration, in this case, for seven artists, four painters and three sculptors. The result is a multifaceted view, eclectic, juxtaposing artists’ works with very different forms of expression, techniques, training. This exhibition’s catalogue has a luxurious introduction: the extraordinary prose of Antonio García Barbeito, inseparable companion of his personal and enveloping voice.

The sculptor, friend of the fire, models iron as if it were clay. His works “Montoliu” and “José Tomás”, in small format, escapes from the hardness and heaviness inherent in this metal, appearing light, ductile, and capable of transmitting elegant delicacy, despite the assurance of its everlasting nature. In a different scale and with greater force in the plastic language, this artist performs “Manolete”, conceived as an imperial bust in which he synthesizes in just a few lines and features a legend.

Artist of the goyestic bullfighter, whose torso stands in the middle of the ring in a very close composition. They are works in large format, featuring drawings and lines, of highly original comic art forms close to the Pop Art and Naïf. “Goyesco Happy” (“Goyesco Feliz”) and “Goyesco Peace” (“Goyesco Paz”) could be the advertising slogans for the pro-bullfighting group against the anti-bullfighting group, they are full of abundant material, making them true bas-relieved of flat, literally palpable colours. Figurative painter of great command of techniques in magical realism. His “Minotaur in Las Ventas”, a great work of art in a reduced format, reinterprets the myth par excellence, while the “Allegory of bullfighting”, a bullfighters “vanitas”, reflects the dreamy melancholy of a bullfighter in front of a field, conceived as a technicoloured “flashback”. “The reaper is coming” (“La parka se acerca”), a surrealist work with the only bull in this exhibition, because of his dreamlike nature, unreal, is the view of an impressed spectator filled with terrible presentiment, of which the bullfighter is not aware of.

Takes a unique approach to the bullfighting from his philosophy of life, bodybuilding, and with an unmistakable label, like the obese, plump and happy view in Bottero´s world. His paintings put a hyper-muscular bullfighter in mid-agony and gloomy atmosphere enhancing his tremendous sense of loneliness. Made with oil technique, “Bullfighter Nude I” and “Bullfighter Nude II”, are surprising due to the provocative nudity of its abundant muscles and astonished look, of that who does not see anything or anyone except the bull. In “Bullfighter I” and “Bullfighter II”, of mixed techniques, he hardens even more the point of view, a threshold approach, revealing the sculptural passion of the author and his particular skills of sculpting details of the bullfighter’s costume.
C. ALVAREZ Painter who focuses on the ritual, almost liturgical, which precedes the bullfighting show. A purification process in which the man, stripped off his fashionable clothes, begins catharsis to achieve the interior sublimation. A delicate and quiet protocol in which each garment is a step in spiritual transformation. Her works of art, dominated by bright colours and strong Mediterranean light, were painted using two techniques: oil on canvas, with detailed finishing, and acrylic on panels, with swift implementation and easy-flowing brushstrokes. “Esences of bullfighting” is a mixed media with different materials (for instance, capote of Enrique Ponce, famous torero).
MANUEL FERNANDEZ Unravels the depths of the soul of the bullfighter culled from centre of the earth. His bullfighter is inspired by the most pure and elegant Jose Tomas. “Heart and Overcoat” (“Corazon y Capote”) is a pyramidal composition of a veronica, in which the cape seems to erupt from the depths, wrapping the man, becoming one being. In “Volapié”, he describes this crucial moment. The fighter, standing right next to the still bull, leans in a helical composition, with convulsive motion, revealing a sculptor rooted in the Mannerist and Baroque arts. His figures are possessed with deep feelings and an energy shock that invites to interaction, a stereometric vision, made possible by the use of swivel stand on them.

Kettal - Brewing traditional English ales in Southern Spain Connoisseurs of good English beer will be pleased to know that tucked away amongst the discount furniture stores, engineers and paint shops of the Palmones industrial estate in Los Barrios is a microbrewery/brewpub brewing and serving traditional English ales. The brainchild of local chartered accountant Tim Revill and his partner Mercedes Lynch, Tim had always wanted to own a brewery (well who wouldn’t) and after five years of planning and bureacratic wrangling, the Fabrica de Cerveza Kettal opened its doors in August last year. According to Mercedes the biggest problem for the authorities was the unique nature of the business, Kettal is the only microbrewery in the province, and other than one more in Almeria, probably Andalucia. In charge of brewing is FCK’s brewmaster Jonah Jones, an Englishman from Lancashire who learnt his craft whilst living and running a microbrewery in Australia before returning to Spain recently. The brewery produces batches of 1,225 litres (about 7.5 barrels) with the process taking some 5-6 weeks from start to the finished product ready for the glass. Recently Kettal have begun supplying limited amounts of their beer to other bars, something which they intend to expand as the business develops. One such bar is CJs in Duquesa Port which currently offers El Trillo.

El Trillo (the threshing board) summer ale; ABV 4.2%: made with 100% Maris Otter malt and flavoured with Golding hops. A light straw coloured ale -very thirst quenching. El Almiar (the haystack) IPA; ABV 5.1%: made with Maris Otter and Crystal malt and late hopped with Cascade. A bitter beer with a fresh hoppy taste and aroma. Rather “New World”. El Alambique (the still) Irish style red ale; ABV 4.0%: malts used include Maris Otter, Crystal Pale, Chocolate Pale, Cara Special and hopped with Northern Brewer and Hersbrucker. Toasty aroma with a caramel and toffee flavour. La Fanega (measure of grain) double malt; ABV 5.6%: brewed from Maris Otter, Crystal Pale and Cara Amber and Brewers Gold hops. This is definitely the favourite with our customers. Our brewer invented it when he forgot to divide by 2 on the first brew and we’ve continued from there. El Yunque ( an anvil) porter; ABV 4.8%: contains Maris Otter, Crystal, Chocolate Pale and Black Cara special malts with Fuggles hops. Dark and mysterious. La Espiga (the ear of corn) wheat beer; ABV 3.5%: made with Marris Otter and Malted Wheat with Hersbrucker hops. Clearer than most Weissbiers, but with the distinctive wheat beer flavour. Often served with a slice of fresh lemon in a tall glass.
The Beer Kettal brew English style ales, which are kegged and served chilled and under pressure. Although CAMRA would not approve, casked beer just will not survive at this latitude and temperature. The beers are made only from natural ingredients malted barley, hops, yeast and water. They are unpasteurized and chemical free. FCK offers six beers throughout the year and seasonal specialities, when appropriate. The names of the beers reflect the historical agricultural atmosphere of their tap room and restaurant:

Sylvie Fleury Exhibition at CAC Malaga The Contemporary Art Center of Málaga, in collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, is presenting the first exhibition in Spain of the Swiss artist, Sylvie Fleury. DFAS de la Frontera is a society who get together for lectures, special interest days, trips, and social events. Regular monthly lectures are held at the San Roque Golf & Country Club on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 11 am, and usually last between an hour and an hour and a half. Vistors are welcome to come along to lectures; entrance for visitors is €12 and €10 for members of other NADFAS societies. Entry is free for members of DFAS de la Frontera. The lecturers are experts in their fields and are selected from the NADFAS accredited directory and the programme is designed to be wide ranging and interesting. In addition to the lectures the programme may also include one or two ‘Special Interest Days’, where the lecturer gives an additional in depth lecture on a specially selected subject. AREME AGM (Estepona Foreign Residents’ Association) The AGM of AREME will take place on Monday May 9th at the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre, Estepona at 11.00 am. Estepona Floral Art Club This month’s demonstration will take place on Tuesday 17th May 2011, at The Upper Deck, Villacana. Exit opposite Agro Jardin Garden Centre, Estepona, (Beachside). This is a change from last month’s published venue. The club shall be welcoming Elizabeth Graham, NAFAS National Demonstrator, from Newport, Wales. This will be an opportunity to see the art of ‘Flower Arranging’ at its best! Don’t miss out on this afternoon!! The demonstration begins prompt at 3 pm – 5 pm. This includes a raffle of all the wonderful Flower Arrangements that Elizabeth will be creating that day. Elizabeth will also be holding an ‘Informal Workshop’ which will be the perfect chance for you to learn a new skill! Sotogrande Women Animal Charity Lunch The Sotogrande Women group is holding a special lunch in aid of its animal charities on Thursday 12 May from 12.30 pm at the Hotel Almenara, Sotogrande. Guest speakers will include animal communicator and energy healer, Inge Beaujean, along with a number of charity representatives. You do not have to be a member to attend as Sotogrande Women is open to everyone and is not just for “ladies who lunch”. On a blustery Sunday 17 April, ASPANDEM director Jose Juan and a number of his charges joined CAP members on the paseo at San Pedro de Alcantara for their annual sponsored walk to raise funds for the Association. Club Charity and Pleasure is a friendly, social organisation based in El Paraiso, Estepona, meeting at 11 a.m. each Wednesday morning at El Paraiso Country Club for coffee; many weeks there is a speaker. Weekly activities include bridge, whist and bowls, and members have recently started a choir. Other events and excursions include visits to the theatre and exhibitions; lunches and dinners at different venues along the coast; mystery trips, etc. A full programme of events is published in CAP’s free quarterly magazine, and regularly updated online. Age Concern, Estepona and Manilva Sponsored Walk Age Concern is holding a sponsored walk on Sunday May 8th. There will be 2 walks both meeting in Sabinallas on the seafront opposite Lidls. There is a long walk of approximately 14k which will leave at 9.30 am. This walk is designed for people who can cope with hills, rivers, and some quite tricky walking terrain and will take about 4 to 4.5 hours. The short walk will leave at 11.30 and is flat. It goes along the sea front from the Lidl end of Sabanillas to Castillo then crosses the A7 by Duquesa Golf and so back on the land side of the road. A short version of the walk is suitable for wheelchairs. The walk is about 4.5 km. long and should take about 1.5 hours – there are plenty of cafés on the way for refreshments, or simply bring your own for a beach picnic! People can do as much, or as little, of the walk as they wish. The 21st ADANA Dog Show on 8 May in The Palacio de Congresos, Estepona is an enjoyable fun show. All are welcome - from the top pedigree to the most adorable mutt - big and small, young and senior, and very importantly, ex ADANA dogs. There are classes to show off all behaviour, good or naughty, somewhat reluctant, and for those willing to have a go once they have watched the first round. There is no pre-requisite for dogs to be trained at all, let alone trained to ‘Olympic` standard to enter the ring. There are four prizes in each class plus rosettes and a trophy for the winner. It is not necessary to pre-register on arrival at the Registration Desk for every class the handler may wish to enter. Decide to enter any others as you watch and enjoy the show. Entry to the show is free to those 15 years and under and the Junior Handler class is free provided the dog has been entered in one other class. A wide range of stalls lines the Palacio for those pets and owners unable to resist shopping for jewellery, pet accessories, cook books and yummy pet food. Our Artist will be in the main concourse ready to commission your Pet Portrait. Following the success of the ADANA cookbook, the event sees the launch of ADANA greetings cards which are available individually or as pack of notelets. The cards feature “Adano”, a typical ADANA mutt. The finale to complete a truly memorable day will be Best in Show. All the winners from all the classes will compete for the magnificent Marion Sturton Trophy which the mayor of Estepona, David Valadez, will present to the overall winner at around 3 pm. Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith visit the Cudeca Hospice
Last month, Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice, had the pleasure of receiving a private visit from Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith at the Hospice Centre at Benalmadena. The visit has been aimed at understanding more fully the reality of Cudeca and the support given to patients who are cared for at the Hospice. The Banderas family expressed their appreciation and gratitude for the humanitarian work carried out by Joan Hunt and the Cudeca staff. Both Melanie and Antonio, and his brother Javier who accompanied them, took great interest in the patients in the Day Centre and In-Patient Unit. The patients enjoyed the surprise visit immensely and were again able to realise the significance of the Cudeca philosophy:

At the same time, Antonio and Melanie, together with the trustees of the Brotherhood Fundación Lágrimas y Favores, presented a donation of 25,000€ which will be destined to Cudeca’s Special Kind of Caring which is given without cost to people suffering from advanced cancer, as well as offering support to their families. These funds have been raised by the Brotherhood Fundación Lágrimas y Favores throughout 2010, thanks to events such as the charity gala “Starlite” held last summer at the Hotel Villa Padierna of Marbella, with the support of Antonio Banderas, the American actress Eva Longoria, (through her Foundation Eva’s Heroes), and also thanks to the organisation by Sandra García-San Juán and María Bravo. Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice, is deeply grateful to the constant support received from our friends the Brotherhood Fundación Lágrimas y Favores, and particularly to the Banderas family in helping us to raise both awareness and funds which enable us to continue offering our Special Kind of Caring with which we have offered without cost to more than 6.500 people suffering from advanced cancer, and giving support to their families throughout the Malaga province.

Gibraltar Festival of the Seas
Whether your little ones fancy hooking up with Captain Jack Sparrow for breakfast or you’re a serious yachtsman looking to win the Ocean Village Cup in the inaugural Yacht Rally, there is nowhere better to be than Gibraltar’s Ocean Village this May. Packed with land and water-based fun for all, the Festival of the Seas runs from Saturday 14 May to Sunday 22 May and is quite simply unmissable. The Festival kicks off on Saturday 14 May with a skippers’ breakfast and briefing ahead of the exciting Yacht Rally in aid of the GBC Open Day and Rainbow Ward at St Bernard’s Hospital. The competitive juices can flow with a fancy dress contest or perhaps avail yourselves of the Gibraltar Sports & Leisure Authority’s generosity as they make all their facilities available to include the climbing wall. Later on, the Minister for Culture will be presenting an award for the best outdoor painting whilst keen fishermen will be reeled into the Gibraltar Federation of Sea Anglers (GFSA) demonstration. For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, take a stroll around the market stalls along the promenade whilst listening to a full programme of live music and entertainment on stage in the sunshine. España Femenino for the first time in the event’s history, with the support of the Real Federación Española de Golf and the Real Federación Andaluza de Golf. A total field of 126 players including 120 professionals and six amateurs will compete for the title over four rounds, with a cut to the leading 60 professionals and those tied at halfway. The legendary Laura Davies added her name to the champions roster when she earned a two stroke victory at nearby Flamingos Golf in 2010. Founded in 1989, La Quinta Golf & Country Club is internationally famed for it’s extremely high quality golf course. UD Castellar win this year’s Iberian Trophy for Peace
As every Easter holiday for the last 4 years, the Arsenal soccer school in Spain hosted the Iberian Trophy for Peace, an international U14s football competition. The tournament, which aims to promote multicultural relations among players, was contested by 6 teams this year, including an English team and a Moroccan team which participated in this event for the first time. Due to the great success achieved last year, the tournament was again held at the sports facilities of Castellar de la Frontera thanks to the support received by both the mayor and locals. The 6 teams who took part this year were UD Castellar, Arsenal Soccer Schools España, Lincoln Nature, Misgav FC, Arsenal Soccer Schools Marruecos and Ashford Town. The participation of England and Morocco in this edition, brings to 8 the number of nationalities that have taken part in the tournament since its beginning four years ago: Spain, Portugal, France, Gibraltar, Israel, England, Morocco and Denmark. The tournament took place over the Easter Weekend and despite the weather saw some encouraging performances from these young footballers. Arsenal Soccer School who were defending their title were beaten in the final by UD Castellar who lifted this year’s trophy.

Black Clouds and Silver Linings With our expatriate retirees in mind For most of us our main concerns lie closer to home. Here in Spain, our families, homes, finances and of course, our health. These are the issues which have a direct impact on our everyday lives. For example, Sterling, which for many years has been a safe and stable currency has recently weakened against the euro and other currencies, raising the cost of living and has most expatriates wondering how they will cope. Let us find ways to adapt. Let us take a look at the black clouds and better still the silver linings. It is now time to take the bull by the horns and take control of our lives and finances. All resident pensioners sixty five and over are entitled to their tarjeta sesenta cinco. This card entitles you to cut price glasses, hearing aid equipment, free or reduced prices into museums theatres and places of interest, free travel, and reduced hotel prices in all areas of the Iberian Peninsula. Home care by professional nursing staff is also available at no expenditure. Respite homes are set up for short stays to allow partners who are acting as carers to recharge their batteries. You can be assured that some of these homes are like hotels. This could be a lovely way to enjoy a free holiday. The IBI (rates) have increased considerably due to the revaluation of the valor catastral. On paper this has increased
the value of your property which means that all payments based on your house value will also increase. Some examples include our yearly tax, rates, rubbish, and capital gains charges when you sell your property. Not to mention the increases in inheritance tax. Now we should know how to scrutinise all the reductions possible. An example of this is the possibility of non-payment of the plus valia and the exemptions from inheritance tax. IF this issue is not handled with expertise, residents and non residents alike are handed a substantial bill from the tax authorities.

In spite of all the advice given, should you be unfortunate enough to discover that after spending the last ten years as a resident, exhausted your savings and are considering returning to the UK because you do not have pension. Do not despair you may be entitled to a Spanish pension. When you have to realise any new transactions be it paying a bill, taking a neighbour to court, accepting a quote. The writing up of documents, making a new will. Be aware when implementing these or any future transactions. To coin a catchphrase, “Look before you leap”

“Curiouser & curiouser,” said Alice - 1 As pensionistas on the Manilva padron, my wife and I enjoy monthly pedicures at the Edificio Multiples Usos in Sabinillas. We are accustomed to the pedicurista not being in attendance for whatever reason... live here long enough and you learn to ride the punches, ‘Go with the flow’ as they say. Our April appointments were booked for midday; on arrival, sure enough, the door to the consulting room was closed and locked. Waiting outside the room however was an elderly lady. I asked, “Que hora tiene?” (“What time is your appointment?”) She looked at her wristwatch, but I could see her appointment slip in her hand: it read ‘10.40’ “You have been waiting for an hour and a half ?” She nodded. “Is **** (the pedicurista) here?” She shrugged. “We had best go home,” I said to my wife. “Let’s wait a while,” she replied. ‘A while later’, I went down to the office and asked a functionaria “Where is ****?” She glanced up at the clock and sniffed. “Domicilio - house visit.” Another ‘while later’ (as I said, you learn to ride the punches), I asked again downstairs and got the same answer. “Please call **** on her movil AND ask when she is coming back.” “I’m not allowed to make personal calls.” I smile sweetly, (as in Arabia, you learn to do that here too.) to no avail however. Now the young guy at Reception I have known since he was knee-high. I explain my problem, he goes to the functionaria’s phone, dials, speaks and says to me, “**** is in her room, been there all the time.” As for the lady who had been waiting before us, she had the wrong day....
“Curiouser & curiouser,” said Alice - 2 April 29 and we receive two of those letters with the pink card that you have to sign as receiving. The ones that make you think some faceless person has denounced you for some unknown reason. (“Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you...”) The letters, dated Mar 30, were from the ‘Most Excellent Ayuntamiento of Manilva’. Signed by the Mayoress herself they jnformed us that “according to law, la, la, la, and the Bureau of Statistics, our ‘Residencias’ had expired, so officially we no longer lived in Manilva”.! But another paragraph of said law conceded us 10 days to go to the Sabinillas Tenencia and appeal. Which I did on May 3, ie after another ‘long weekend’ and certainly long after the ‘concession’ had expired. I confront this very nice lady at Reception and no, she wasn’t on the ‘phone to Mama, marido or clandestine novio. I lay out my papers and valid residencias. “You have received a letter,” she says. Sign here.” “What’s finito?, What am I signing for? Are we back on the padron?” “You were never removed from the padron.” “But why these official letters?” A shrug. “No pasa nada.
